2016AWG - Day 5 Round Up

The Evening Standard

Sledding into Silver
Day 5 of the Aeian Winter Games kicked off with the 4x Bobsleigh. First onto the the track were the women. Ohen's crack team was assembled, Christina Lundell, Brigit Norso, Agnes Sorbeck, and Matilda Lingren. Sorbeck and Lingren had already raced in the 2x Bobsleigh and finished in a respectable 4th place. Hopefully their experience with the track would pay off, and it did! The ladies had a fantastic line throughout their four runs. They came in with a total time of 3:30.36. Only 20 seconds behind the Nausikaan favourites and well ahead of the Oserlandians.

Shortly after, the men's 4x Bobsleigh began. Once again the action was breathtaking. The speeds at which each of the sleds were travelling and the precision of the lines each team traced were mesmerising. The Glanish team ran a near perfect four runs, only letting themselves down on their third run (51.75 seconds). So too did the boys from Ohen followed closely by the Oser and Newreyan team. This race was going to be close. The third run from our boys put them into a fantastic position for a medal, even an attack on the Gold was possible. There were only milliseconds in it! All the teams except the Glanish team finished their final runs. The Ohenian team were in the lead, their run had been good, but not the best. The Glanish teams last run was just better. Our boys swept up the silver 0.01 second ahead of the Oser team.

Rampage in the Rink
The afternoon of the fifth day saw the return of the Hockey, as the Quarter Finals of the Women's competition kicked off. Ohen's girls were to face the world champions from Glanodel. A daunting prospect, but the team looked ready for the challenge. Both team played premier hockey. However, the GLanish women managed to score a second goal in the opening minutes of the third period. The ladies of Ohen then strugggled to break through the GLanish defence, but to no avail as two shots were saved! So there ended the Ohenian Women's Hockey Team's hopes of a medal. Well done to Glanodel.

Later that day, in the evening, the Men's Hockey arrived at the rink. Team Ohen and Team Nausikaa were the first two to play off. The Nausikaans would be a tough opponent for the Ohenians to beat. The Nausikaan team had taken away the silver at the last Aeian Winter Games. The game started with both teams playing cautiously and trying to keep possesion of the puck. The first period ended with 0-0. Both teams came back in the second period more aggresively. Both made attempts at scoring, and in the 12th minute Ohen's right winger put one in the net! Then in the third period a penalty resulted a second Ohenian goal! Team Ohen go through to the semi-finals of the Men's Hockey!

Other News
Unfortunately Ohen's male and female figure skaters failed to impress the judges. Ostenson finished a solid fifth and Lerke finished a less dignified tenth. Bad luck, but keep your heads up guys you tried your hardest!

NAUSIKAA GOING STRONG
Aurora Männistö
Image
Ahti Mäki stormed to victory earlier this week to give Nausikaa its first gold of the games

Nausikaa has started strong in this year's edition of the Winter Games, securing itself two golds, five silvers and two bronzes. For one of the smallest nations within Aeia, Nausikaa is certainly not short of talent; with recent results earning us a position within the top flight of winter sport. President Saaristo was quick to congratulate the athletes on their recent successes, but to remember not to let it go too far. There are still many events to take place, with many chances for Nausikaa to take home the gold within the coming days.

Nausikaa's winter games campaign began in the ice hockey, with both the men and women's team receiving byes into the quarter finals. Despite their early successes the men's teams were later defeated by Ohen 0-2 within the quarter finals. Although the women's team successfully made it through to the semi-finals, defeating the mighty Newrey by 1 goal to nil. Within the biathlon, Ahti Mäki took the gold within the men's individual 20km, with a world record time of 49:18.8 to give Nausikaa its first medal and a gold at that! Within the women's competition Tuulikki Viljanen earned gold in the women's edition of the competition.
Within the snowboarding however Nausikaa failed to earn a medal, although within the women's half-pipe Vellamo Mansikkamaa earned a respectable fourth. The two-person bobsleigh saw Nausikaa earn a silver medal within the women's competition, only edged into second by the team from Glanodel who won both the men and women's competition. The combined Alpine skiing event saw another silver for Nausikaa within the men's tournament, with Aalto gaining joint second with Baade from Iscandria.
Day 3 saw Nausikaa once again on the medal table, with medals in the ski jump and biathlon, both silver. The competitors Puro and Luoto both earned their medals in the men's medium hill ski jump and women's biathlon sprint respectively. Within the men's curling, Nausikaa proceeded to the knockout stages, edging into third place above Tarasanovia. Unfortunately, the women's team failed to make it through to the knockout stages, missing out by 6 points, to finish in 5th place. Nausikaa gained a further medal within the women's speed skating, our second bronze of the tournament. Another silver was also won within the women's slalom skiing, taking the total to 8 medals to by the start of day 5. Day 5 saw our second gold of the tournament in the four-woman bobsleigh, however our athletes failed to gain a medal within the figure skating, at best gaining 5th place within the women's singles competition.

There are still many chances for Nausikaa to strike gold within the winter games, or even reach a top three finish!

We here at the Neitiznot Oracle are 100% behind our lads, Come on Nausikaa!

Bronze Medal Menagerie

Postby Pan-Slavic Nations » Sat Dec 24, 2016 11:00 pm

Brought to you by the CPSNBC
Day 6 brought mixed feelings to CPSN viewers as two bronze medals came in. Skiier Svadibo scored a bronze medal in the ski jump event. A second bronze medal came from Ms. Parishev in the biathlon. Both of the athletes definitely did extremely well, but ith the CPSN lagging behind in 8th place due to its lack of more gold and silver medals. The CPSN remains hopeful that it can pull itself back to the top of the standings with wins in ice hockey and other events. "These athletes tried their best; we all know that even if we don't win a medal, the Games have been an excellent show of their talent and skill nonetheless" President Lev reassured viewers in a live interview yesterday after the events ended. The CPSN currently has 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze medals. Ice hockey semi-finals are predicted to end in favour of the CPSN and Ohen for both the men's and women's teams.
Tune in tomorrow to see the epic events and their conclusions, live on your device, with the CPSNBC!

Hope For CPSN Lost?

Postby Pan-Slavic Nations » Tue Dec 27, 2016 12:42 pm

Brought to you by The CPSNBC
All hope seems to be lost for CPSN's Winter Games team. With only 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals, the last nail in the coffin for CPSN's dreams of a place in the top 5 in the Games seems to have come down, as both Men's and Women's ice hockey teams lost to their opponents yesterday. It seems that the CPSN has experienced many bad turns during the games, especially the unexpected losses in skiing events. Skiing is supposed to be the CPSN's national sport and it is sure now that national pride has been greatly wounded by the lack of medals. Ice hockey proved to be a false hope in the end, as the CPSN team tried its best and almost got there, but ultimately failed to reach a good spot. There seems to be no chance of a top spot for the CPSN in the Games and many have already ceased to watch after yesterday's ice hockey losses. National viewership dropped from ~80% to ~30% overnight. "We will still welcome our athletes back with fanfare and open arms, for they have achieved what they could; and for the ice hockey teams, what was not thought possible, they have tried their best, as many have already said. They braved the slopes, the ice and the snow, and we are all better for it to have participated and lost than to have not participated at all", said President Lev in a speech to viewers after yesterday's programme. The Games have been a rollercoaster of emotions and an elevator ride of unexpected victories and crushing defeats. Is there hope yet? Possibly. But only time can tell.

Tune in soon to watch the Games, live on the CPSNBC!

While it was hard to deny the worry among most Glanish citizens after the assaults on ice hockey players Iver Boysen, Kai Aagaard, and Bjorn Smith, Bastian Fabricius has proven to be a more than capable replacement. Support for the players has also been very visible since the assault as even international fans expressed encouragement for the players and condemnation of Newreyan policies and the attackers. The President has yet to provide a statement and most Glanish seem to believe that the Games are preventing such comments. That being said, many civil rights organizations have voiced their concerns over the fact that the President isn't willing to condemn the actions of the Newreyan police or the Newreyan justice ministry after their ruling that the assault was not rooted in prejudice. However, most simply appear to be waiting in anticipation at what comments the first openly gay president of Glanodel will have to say when he can speak perhaps a little more freely.

These unfortunate events aside, Glanodel has maintained a consistent competitor throughout the games. Despite coming in fourth place in the pairs figure skating competition, Glanodel proved itself a master of the ice last night. Along with Helene and Ingerlise taking home blue ribbons in the ice dancing competition, both the men's and women's ice hockey teams won their matches against Ohen and Crylante, respectively. Glanodel also took second place in the men's and women's thousand meter skate. These wins come as welcomed news after Newrey won the men's curling finals and the women's curling team taking home bronze on day six before the Yuletide break. Still, Glanodel is guaranteed four gold, two silver, and four bronze, the third most out of all teams competing and the White Wolves show no signs of slowing down. I think I speak for everyone when I say that as long as we can beat Newrey, every Glenish citizen will still wear second place proudly.

As usual, the Yuletide season is over, shops are slowly going back to normal, and the mass exodus of Glanodel's yearly, holiday visitors has begun. Friends and family, shoppers and food lovers, all of the estimated 1.1 million tourists in Glanodel for the holiday season have flooded the airports. However, this year, all reports indicate that the airports are even more crowded as thousands of ice hockey fans, figure skating enthusiasts, and anyone else generally attracted to ice sports are on their way to the games now that Glanodel is returning to normal. While nearly one-fifth of all television stations regularly broadcast Winter Game matches and every Glanish news network provides consistent results and scores, this has proven far less involved than the true lovers of winter sports would like. As a result, an estimated twenty-five thousand Glanish citizens and residents will have left since the twenty-sixth of this month, most of which will attend only to view the ice hockey finals. As expected, this year will surely prove to be the games to remember.

As the White Wolves ski team enjoys their victory on the slopes and Frandsen takes home first place in the biathlon, most of Glanodel is gearing up for the ice hockey finals tonight. Perhaps the single most anticipated sporting event of the year, both the Glanish men's and women's teams will be playing in the finals. As the men prepare for their match against the Yvilonian team and the women prepare for their match against Nausikaa, perhaps the most stressful job in the ice hockey verse right now is the coach. Needless to say, tonight's match will no doubt be a nail-biter.
