Hopes of Early Hockey Wins Dashed!
Ryan Hardwick

With the opening ceremony of the Winter Games going swimmingly with little to no problems, many Newreyans speculated eagerly that it was a sign of things to come, with the bookies placing Newrey's chances of coming first in the Group C in the Ice Hockey Qualifiers audaciously high. For fans and gamblers alike, these hopes were scuttled when the dust finally settled following the end of the First Day's activities. Ahead of only Midrasia in the Group C, the inability of the team to gain any meaningful victory has brought a crusade of angry chirps against the team's coach, Harvey Richmond, for his alleged incompetence.

Speaking to a gathering of press following the end of the fixtures, Mr. Richmond has this to say;

'While defeat most certainly leaves a bitter and distasteful feeling in our mouths, we can only work in the future to improve. It is clear the teams of Iscandria and Nausikaa were better trained and better prepared for the games than we were and I congratulate them on their victories. While it is hard for a person, much more so for a Newreyan, to admit defeat it is important to note that these games are about friendly competition and cooperation and exaggerating the defeats or victories as some sort of prestige bonus or national humiliation is contrary to the very spirit of the games. All I have left to remark is that the Newreyan team will be practicing much of the next few days and take lessons learned in these defeats to heart and incorporate them into our training. Thank you.'

Luck was also absent on the woman's half of the team, with Newrey being defeated by Nausikaa and Crylante back to back, before preforming a miracle in their game against Iscandria, coming back from 2-0 to equalise in the final 10 minutes of the game restoring some hope and pride in the team. Rather comically, Churches across Newrey have reported an increase in attendees during mid-week and weekend sermons in the build-up to the games, with churches bustling with people on the Sunday prior to the first Day of the Games. Faith apparently has not been lost in the teams however, with Priest being hammered with confessions following the end of the First Day, in some sort of attempt to right the defeat with the Creator. For savvy restaurant owners, mid-week sales would do well to those that choose to fast in hopes of bargaining with the Creator to win.

Despite the obvious pointing to the reality of the games by Mr. Richmond, many fans have let their frustrations fly wildly on Chirper with many trying to blame the Organisers of the games for apparently rigging it in favour of the visiting teams, however this has been dismissed as 'ludicrous'.

In a brighter moment of today's events, John Graham has won Newrey its first medal of the Winter Games in the form of silver for the biathlon. The hard fought event started out evenly between the majority of competitors, however Ahti Mäki of Nausikaa pulling ahead of Mr Graham during the cross-country portion of the event. Mr. Graham, who previously served within the Norlynn Rifles Regiment, started training in the Military Patrol variant of the sport during his days in the Regiment, becoming the third best sharpshooter within the military prior to his departure to engage in sports full time. It should also be noted that Graham was able to successfully change from military patrol to the biathlon with ease.

That is all we have for today's events, be sure to read tomorrows paper for the highlights!

2016AWG - Day 1 Round Up

The Evening Standard

Ohen Not So Super Seven On The Ice!
The first day of competition at the 2016 Aeian Winter Games in Newrey has concluded, and what a day it's been! The action all began at 09:30 Newreyan time (add two hours for Ohen) with the Men's and Women's Ice Hockey Group Preliminaries. The Ohenian Women's Hockey Team were in Group A of the draw and immediately played against Yvilonia. The girls quickly establised a strong defensive line during the first period. Then in the second period a total swap out of the team resulted in a very aggresive line-up. It was in the 34th minute that Ohen scored. The women kept up the offensive against Yvilonia for the rest of the game, with some missed opportunities for a second goal. Still a victory though!

The all out offensive tactics could be seen to have taken a toll on the teams energy levels, as the women's game pace slowed. The women's second match against Vrnallia was a complete mess with both teams appearing to want to play aggresively, but neither team really seizing the moment in crucial play situations. Their second match ended in a draw and as the girls left the ice a certain air of fatigue was visible.

When it came to the third match against the very strong CPSN Women's Team a true feat of strength and skill was needed to keep Ohenian hopes alive. Acting manager and head coach Michelle Junskog obviously knew her team very well and once again pulled out a totally defensive line-up. Boy was it needed! The women from the CPSN pounded the Ohenian goalkeeper throughout the first period and well into the second. It wasn't until the third period that the Ohenian girls managed to return a single shot, but it was not to be and this third match also ended in a draw. Despite the teams average performance the girls managed to come out on top in Group A, which guarantees them a place in the Quarter-Finals.

If only the same could be said for the Men's Hockey Team. They were drawn into Group B along with the world champions, Glanodel. Play didn't begin for them until 13:30 Newreyan time. They'd got to watch the Women's first match. The time seemed to suit the Ohenian fans very well as almost nearly 44 million people tuned in to watch the Men's Team play. The guys' first match was to be against a fellow Super Seven team from the CPSN. Play began fiercely with the CPSN on the offensive, however the Ohenians quickly managed to turn tide with a goal in the 19th minute of the first period.

The CPSN came back with a fire in their bellies. They once again played an offensive game which yeilded them many shots on the goal, but none could get past the safe hands of Kalle Edgren. The CPSN kept up their offensive well into the third period, this would come to be their undoing. Within the first few minutes of the third period the CPSN committed a double foul, which gave the Ohenian boys a two man power play. Of course the power play resulted in seconf goal. 2-0 was the result of the Ohen's mens first match.

Things looked good after the first match. The team seemed boosted by their victory and there didn't seem to be too much fatigue if at all any. However, the second match was against the World Champions, Glanodel. The match was a flurry of skill, strengh and emotions throughout. Both teams pushed each other to their limits with neither gasining the upper hand. A fantastic 4-4 result of Ohen and maybe a mild dissapointment for Glanodel.

Going into their third match the team looked a little tired, but morale was high. A draw against Glanodel was almost as good as a victory against anyone else. Tarasanovia were to be the final opponent of the group stage. The Tarasanovian team had already played against Glanodel and recieved a 5-2 thrashing. The Ohenian boys were the superior team on paper, but this was their third match of the day and they were tired. It was visible in the way they moved on the ice, but skill doesn't always require strength and they showed their superior skills in defending against the Tarasanovian offensive. The match ended in a 0-0 draw. This left the Men's team in a strong position, but Glanodel had won their third and final match against the CPSN, meaning Ohen were second in the group with only 5 points. They move on to play in the play offs, hopefully they can make a good showing of themselves and claim back some glory for Ohen!

Biathlon's Bronze Beast & Golden Glory for Ohen
Also taking place on the first day of the 2016 Aeian Winter Games in Newrey was the Individual Biathlon. The event began with the Men's 20km at 10:00 Newreyian time. Nobody was quite sure how Mattias Gulbeck would perform. Some hoped for an attempt on the world record, whilst others said that he would tire and drop to the back of the group. He proved neither side right, but both wrong. The 38 year old maintained a good pace throughout but incured a small time penalty when he missed a single target. The penalty forced him to come into the finish a minute behind the second place Newreyan. It also appears that his dreams of attacking the world record were stolen from him when the winner, Ahti Maki of Nausikaa broke the world record.

In the afternoon, at 14:00 Newreyian time, the Women's Individual 15km began. Tamilla Arbeja quickly cemented herself in the front three. She managed to break away from the front group towards the middle of the race when both Birkyx and Viljanen incurred time penalties. She kept up her pace and accuracy until the very end. Her husband and two children were waiting at the finish line for her. Arbeja burst into tears after her amazing victory, meaning an interview was not at all possible.

2016AWG - Day 2 Preamble

Young, Lesbian and Proud of It!
Tilda Ulfborg, 4 years ago this name wouldn't have meant anything to anyone, but after her spectacular Half-Pipe performance at the 2012 National Youth Championships the whole of Ohen embraced her as a hero. At only nineteen her rise to fame has been swift, it was only 2 years ago that she beat the three time National Champion, Sally Ossler. Ossler was in her prime at only 24 years of age, but the then seventeen year old Ulfborg came in with a performance that left the judges speechless. "When I look back on that moment now it feels totally surreal, like it almst didn't happen. As if it someone had just made it all up. Nothing much has changed for me, except that now I get to board almost everyday, instead of having to work." She giggles. Ulfborg sits across from me in a small cafe on the outskirts of Jarval. She twirls her shining blonde hair around her left index finger, whilst telling me about how she had to get two buses in order to meet me here. She lives in a small mountain town in Northern Norhaal with her father and younger brother. "In the winter the ski lift is just across the road from our house. We're not one of the popular ski resorts in Ohen, but I think that makes us better. Te best things are often kept secret the longest." She giggles once again, and it would appear to me that she's even flirting. It made national headlines when during celebrations of her victory in the 2014 National Championships she pushed away the then 19 year old Ragnar Grönberg and kissed Sally Ossler, her opponent! "The cheer from the crowd at that moment was amazing. I didn't really fancy Sally, she's not my type, but Ragnar had been pestering me all day and I didn't know how to tell him I wasn't into guys." Chirper and other social media sites exploded with outpourings of support. "The reaction at home and across the whole of Ohen was so positive. Nobody seemed to have a bad word to say. I did recieve some online abuse from other places in Aeia, but I'm never going to meet those people so it doesn't bother me. I was concerned with the Games being in Newrey. I think I'm just gonna go out their and be myself and if they don't like it they know where they can stick it."
(Interview from 03/10/16)

Tilda will be competing in the Women's Half-Pipe , which will take place later on today along with the Men's Half Pipe. Competing in that are Ragnar Grönberg and Anders Rye, again two very young men from Ohen. Grönberg is plenty experienced at this event and is arguably in his prime at 21 years of age. The young Rye, however, has come from relatively nowhere. At only 16 years of age he won the 2015-16 National Youth Championships. Hopefully this young talent will prove themselves on the international stage.

Kinstrife
Also taking place on the second day of the 2016 Aeian Winter Games is the two-man Bobsleigh. Followers of the sport will have heard of the Widforss brothers, the two pushers of Ohenian four-man bobsled. However, a rift has formed between the two brothers and the rest of the bobsleigh team in recent months. The pilot, Ivan Darholm, selected the older and slightly larger Max Widforss to be his brakeman in the two-man race. This clearly upset Hans who had been the brakeman in the two-man for the last two years. Sources close to the brothers say that they are not speaking to each other outside of training and that the older Max has asked the younger Hans to move out of their shared apartment in Tilhem. The whole of Ohen is praying that this falling out will not effect either's performance in the two-man or the four-man.

Chaos in the Combined Skiing
Earlier in the week during training Nadja Naslund reportedly had an accident. Of course any minor fall at the speeds at which these skiiers go is going to hurt, but it was said that Stensby had to be taken away on a stretcher. A spokesperson for Team Ohen said that she would still complete as planned and that her injuries were only mild bruises. We sincerely hope that Nadja has recovered for her race later today.

Also competing in the Men's Combined is Rikard Bjorksson who managed to secure a bronze at last year's Pan-Asuran Winter Games. Hopefully he can continue his good performance into this year's Winter Games. All eyes will be on him.

We are disturbed that Ohen is celebrating an openly lesbian athlete who is participating in the Olympic Games. Homosexuality is an evil concept designed to undermine humanity and we urge Ohen to restrain from perpetuating such sinful behaviour.

CPSN Early Defeats Expected

Postby Pan-Slavic Nations » Tue Dec 20, 2016 12:41 pm

Brought to you by The CPSNBC
The CPSN's loss in both the hockey games and the biathlons yesterday were more than expected, with less than 20% of the country tuning in. Not to say our athletes were bad, but their competitors' lead in talent left the CPSN teams in the dust. Viewership increased in the biathlons, with just over 40% tuning in to watch the beautiful Ursha Karina race the other athletes. Although Ms. Karina ws unable to win a podium spot, she most definitely put her name out there and is a promising athlete. Many have posted videos of Ms. Karina's "sexy" warmup for the event on social media sites like VidClick and Branch. By the time this update is posted, the other athletes will already be preparing for the next event, so get ready to tune into the Aeian Winter Games, live on your device!

Aeian Winter Games: Day Two Roundup: Symač hospitalised after ski mishap
Ejla Mavo, 2016/20/12

Day two of the Aeian Winter Games has unfortunately seen its first major injury for the Vrnallian team, as 24-year-old skier Dviga Symač was left with a fractured ankle following a fall during the women's combined alpine skiing event. She is recovering in hospital, where it is currently uncertain if she will be able to ski again, though she remains hopeful.

"Skiing is my life," she told one of our reporters from her bed in St. Quentin General Hospital, "I've skied on the slopes of many countries in Asura and beyond, and I don't intend to give up all that because of a broken ankle. In my heart I know I'll be fine, and I'll come back a better skier for it."

"This isn't my first fracture, and it won't be my last. These things happen."

Unfortunately Symač's fellow skier, 26-year-old Nàr Khuko, the only other Vrnallian athlete competing today, failed to impress in the men's event, struggling into thirteenth place. Three other athletes failed to complete the event. Mister Khuko was dejected at his performance: "I did my best, but my best was not enough. I managed a decent time, but other athletes were better than me. I'm disappointed, but I will keep training."

Tomorrow's skiers, Maksima Hadzi and Zejdàr Thiaro, competing in the men's and women's individual medium hill jump respectively, hope to make up for today's woes. Thiaro, who is openly bisexual, is particularly determined to wow given host nation Newrey's regressive LGBTQ laws, especially after lesbian Ohenian snowboarder Tilda Ulfborg's gold medal in the women's halfpipe snowboarding event today.

"I want to win, because I want to show that we're as capable as anyone in any field of life. And of course, I want to earn a medal for Vrnallia! I'm more determined now than I have been since I arrived," she told Ustienna.

Meanwhile, outside of the sporting side of the Games, the First Minister, who was in Newrey to watch the Vrnallian athletes, has had to return home after a close family member fell ill. We at Ustienna wish good health upon Mr. Brachvieca's family.
It's Guakok now. She/her or they/them, pick your favourite.

'Ulfborg is a National Hero' says Chancellor Bernovik
Day 2 of the 2016 Aeian Winter Games has concluded, and what a day it's been for Ohen! Obviously the biggest news is that Tilda Ulfborg won the Women's Snowboard Half-Pipe. The nineteen year old initially had some trouble even before starting her first run. As saw as Newreyan officials saw her snow-jacket she was asked to step into a 'no camera' area. The officials claimed she was wearing a rainbow jacket, which was a gay symbol and that she wouldn't be allowed to compete whilst wearing it. Ulfborg and other members of Team Ohen were quick to point out that rainbows don't have a white stripe. Others also interjected that yellow and indigo were also missing. After some more arguing, the officials took a few minutes to discuss. Eventually the Newreyan's agreed it was not a rainbow jacket and apologised.

This had clearly disrupted Ulfborg's pre-run confidence and calm; on the landing of her second trick she almost didn't land. Furthermore, several of the moves she performed were basic level trick and even then she looked shakey. Team Ohen were quick to file a complaint to the organisers and challenged the validity of Ulfborg's first run. This motion was denied; the organisers claimed that the matter was not to do with a sports issue but a legal issue and that also Ulborg had been allowed to wear the jacket. Nonetheless, when it came to her second run Tilda blew everyone out of the water with a near flawless performance. The scores were slow to come out and silence fell upon the waiting contestents. 82.5 was shown, Ulfborg was top of the leaderboard. She had won gold for Ohen. Shortly after Chirper exploded with congratulations, celebrations and all sorts of supportive messages.

In the Men's Half-Pipe both Ragnar Gronberg and Anders Rye laid down solid performances, but nobody seemed to have it in them to beat the Iscandrian Asel.

The Silver Sleigh
Earlier in the day the two-person bobsleigh had taken place. Max Widforss and Ivan Darholm rode a fantastic line down the track. They started out a little rough with a time of 52.44. Straight away commentators began to question whether Max had been the right choice over his younger brother Hans. It was not until their second run, which only took 51.66 seconds, that they jumped into the lead. Although this time was faster than any run fro both the first and second rounds they couldn't keep it up, and their third run gave them a time of 52.30. Commentators from all nations were still talking about the Ohenians' second run still being the fastest run on the board. The boys then went and attacked for the pole position again, laying down a time of 51.62 on their fourth and final run. A phenominal time, but they had been too inconsistent to claim the top spot. Ohen is still proud of its 'Silver Sleighers'.

The Women's Two-person Bobsleigh also took place prior to the men's. Agnes Sorbeck & Matilda Lingren both made a good run of it, but their times were nothing close to the Glanodelans' and Nausikaans' times. They came in a respectable fourth.

A Third Golden Girl for Ohen
Another great victory for Ohen occured in the Combined Alpine Skiing. Nadja Naslund, whom everyone, including herself, had written off as finished narrowly beat the hometown girl and the Iscandrian favourite. It what seems to be a modern miracle, Naslund skiied her way to victory after an injury sustained during a training run. Very early in the day nadja had been doing a practice run, when she suddenly fell and rolled a few times until she finally stopped. She was carried off in a stretcher immediately. However, Team Ohen quickly assured everyone that this was just standard procedure and that Nadja only had a few bruises.

Nobody expected to see her ski a time of 1:25.34. She completely tore through the course and all Sampson (the hometown girl) and Seelman (the Iscandrian favourite) could do was stare in shock. A shout of pure surprise came from Naslund when her time was displayed. It seems that only the women of Ohen have what it takes to bring home the gold, so far...

The Winter Games started off with a bang just two days ago and most of Glanodel has been glued to their television sets as they watch in anticipation. At the last Winter Games, Glanodel distinguished itself as one of the teams to beat, along with the other nations that live in the cold and who can practice games in the snow year round. With Glanodel already taking home two gold medals and three silver and currently in second place over all, it appears that this might be the case again. With the men's ice hockey team getting a bye for the quarter finals, both of the bobsleigh teams winning first place, and Otto Jessen winning second place in the men's halfpipe, Glanodel is well on its way to keeping it's title as the Winter Champions.

Oddly enough, this hasn't been the primary topic of discussion to emerge from the Games, thus far. Just a few minutes before 7 o'clock this morning, a chirp that has since gone viral, getting 1900 rechirped over just a few minutes, and by this afternoon, reaching over 10,000 rechirps. The chirp, posted by a Stephan Bretson, was a message of support to White Wolves players Bjorn Smith and Iver Boysen, as them to get well soon, along with a photo of himself (Bretson) and his boyfriend, White Wolves player Kai Aagaard. Upon further investigation into the chirp and the events that led up to it, this newsoom is saddened that we must confirm its authenticity and are here to explain the events that led up to it.

Around 9 o'clock last night on the streets of Newrey's St.Quentin, a few members of the Glanish men's hockey team and their friends were enjoying a few drinks in celebration of their recent victory on the ice on Monday. Upon leaving the establishment, the group attempted to make their way back to their hotel. However, before reaching the hotel, the group of 3 players and 3 friends were assaulted by a group of 7, as of now, unidentified, Newreyan citizens. By all accounts, the group of Newreyans loudly yelled homophobic slurs as they proceeded to injure all 3 hockey team members in the group. Several minutes after the assault began, Newreyan police intervened and ended the fight. Unfortunately, they were not in time to prevent serious injuries to two of the hockey members, and minor injuries to the third. One member especially hurt during the attack, Smith, was rushed to the emergency room with several broken ribs, a broken arm, and a concussion. The other member who sustained serious injuries, Iver Boysen, was taken to emergency care, but has only been treated for bruised ribs and a mild concussion. The third member involved, and by all accounts, the true target of the assault, Kai Aagaard, sustained only a black eye and a few bruised ribs.

Most key witnesses to the incident that we were able to speak with, admittedly most of which were not Newreyan, claim that the assault was motivated by prejudice towards Aargaard who has always been open about his sexuality and has often used his popularity as a hockey player to push for gay rights throughout the world. While doctors say that Smith will be fine and just needs time and rest to recover, he will not be able to play in the quarter finals, and perhaps the rest of the Games. While you might assume losing the opportunity to play in the Games has left Smith distraught, we found out in an interview that nothing could be further from the truth.

"Are you kidding? I got to kick some Newreyan, homophobe's teeth in. Hell, that makes a little concussion worth it. I'm just glad Kai is cool. He's my boy and we stick up for one another." (Interview with Bjorn Smith; 01:36 PM)

When we finally tracked down Aargaard and his boyfriend Bretsen, of 2 years, we found out that the only reason this became news was because Bretsen, in his words, "refused to let this go unnoticed." Aargaard had actually preferred it all remain off the news and that this not distract people from the Games themselves. Bretson, however, went on to say that, "people need to see what goes on in a country like Newrey. A country that holds his little brother, Glanodel so close, while undermining nearly every value and moral we hold dear as Glanish. Tolerance, cooperation, diversity. My boyfriend was attacked in the middle of the streets in a city with hundreds of cops on constant alert for stuff like this. Yet they only decided to intervene when they recognized the *** getting his *** kicked was one of the athletes. I'm starting to wonder why we would even want their protection." Throughout most of the interview, Aargaard stayed quiet and only mentioned at the very end when we asked him about continuing to play, that the attack had nothing to dissuade him from competing and come Friday, he'd be ready to show the world what Glanodel can do on the ice.

We have been able to confirm that Glanish officials will make an appeal to Game Arbiters that they be allowed to replace Bjorn Smith for the time being, with Bastian Fabricius. The White Wolves' coaches are hopeful the association will be sympathetic to their dilemma, given the circumstances. We cannot, however, confirm what exactly has been done with the Newreyan assailants and rumors among many of the local foreign officials and players suggest that no repercussions will ensue for their actions.

Disaster On The Slopes

Postby Pan-Slavic Nations » Wed Dec 21, 2016 4:16 am

Brought to you by The CPSNBC
Over 80% of the nation tuned in to watch CPSN's Josef Dragunov as he bravely fought against his sickness, but to the disappointment of many, failed to catch CPSN a spot in the top 5 yesterday, falling behind at a disastrous 7 in the standings. Dragunov was down with food poisoning the day before the alpine skiing event and had to be hospitalised. However, the morning of the event, a sick Dragunov told the hospital he was determined to compete in the event anyways. Due to his weakened state, Dragunov was unable to perform his best during the event. "I tried my best and that's what counts, if I'm unwell, it's just another obstacle in the course" the rehospitalised Dragunov told CPSNBC reporters yesterday in response to questions over his wellbeing. President Lev visited Dragunov yesterday to send his compliments and later spoke to our reporters: "Dragunov is an extremely brave athlete... he did what he could, and he did us proud, I hope he gets well soon", President Lev continues jokingly, "but knowing him he will probably participate even if he doesn't".
On the bright side, CPSN athlete Jontahan Illeviscevik has won the CPSN's first medal in the Games! For those who didn't tune in to watch Mr. Illeviscevik's brilliant performance in the snowboarding halfpipe yesterday, you missed out! However, you can tune in to the rerun of his spectacular display after today's events. Mr. Illeviscevik's skill in yesterday's event earned him, and CPSN, a bronze medal.
Ukarina Kaliyev was just out of reach of the top 5 in the Women's Halfpipe event, with just a one-second difference between her and Iscandria's M. Bahsen.
CPSN's bobsleighing was also a known loss from the start, with less than 30% of people tuning in to see them come in last, while Iscandria's team was disqualified in the final two rounds.
Tune in soon to watch the third day of the Aeian Winter Games, live on your device and show your continued support to the competing athletes!

The Newrey Globe || Monday 19.12.2016

Gold for Newrey!
Ryan Hardwick

The dark shadow of yesterday's large failure to gain any worthwhile foothold on the medal table has seemingly passed away, with three more medals making their way into Newreyan hands, placing the country in fourth place in medals overall, tied with the current third place Nausikaa. Crowds cheered and rejoiced as the Newreyan Two-Man Bobsled team edged a victory ahead of Yvilonia by mere miliseconds, however it was slightly damped when the women's bobsled came in a close fifth place, just behind the Ohenian team.

The main even of the day came as the brother duo of Cain and Able Hartman claimed the first Neweryan gold medal of the competition! A close and nail biting event the entire way through, it is seen as some sort of miracle of the Newreyans victory. Originally seen as the black sheep of the event, with bookies favouring his brother to do better, Able managed to overcome all expectations and edged out the bookies favourite, Iscandrian Konrad Baade, and claim the gold for Newrey. His brother, while not able to stand on the podium alongside his brother, held a strong fourth place, beaten out of third by less than ten milliseconds by the Nausikaan competitor, Tapio Aalto.

Hailing from the small village of Upton in the Vallehian mountains along the Nerwrey-Midrasian border, the brothers have always took to snow sports since they could walk and talk. Their early careers were nothing short of miracles, with the brothers being dubbed 'Titan Topplers' as they were able to defeat even the most experienced alpine skiers, seen when the then national champion of Oscar Chapman was defeated by them, at the Winter Games tryouts in last year, with the brothers gaining times nearly ten seconds faster than Chapman. Ever the gracious fellow, Chapman conceded defeat and has been supportive of the brothers ever since. However, even Chapman is recorded as stating his surprise at Able's victory. In an interview following the interview, Able stated that he was 'In complete over my gold-medal win, honestly I expect Konrad to beat me by miles. This victory is honestly light years away of what I ever pictured me doing at this time of my life, not only that but I never expected to be able to claim gold for my country with my country! St Quentin is much different than Upton, I'll give you that. Now, I am off to buy Konrad a beer and sit through an hour of my mother pestering me for playing risky, so have a good day!'

Burmondsy Wins a Medal!

With the recent inability of the womens teams to win medals, expectations weren't set considerably high for the Burmondsy native of Charlee Sampson in the Women's Combined Alpine Skiining. Facing off against competitors born and bred in countries filled with snow, the chances of Charlee placing anywhere above 10 were slim. Jaws, however, quickly hit the floor as she stunned watchers and competitors alike by seizing the silver medal, again barely edging the Iscandrian competition by mere milliseconds. The silver medal winner quickly became a sensation in her home island of Burmondsy, located on the opposite side of the globe near Ternca and the Midrasian territory of St. Luix. Born in the capital of Port Lothan, no one could've guessed what the future had in store for the future silver medal winner. When asked about what got her into winter sports, she had this to say;

"Well, I was around 8 or 9, but my family went on holiday to the Newreyan mainland, largely because my brother had moved here, but he took us up to the Valllehians for a skiing trip. It's funny to think, but I had never seen snow up until this point but as soon as I put those skis on, it felt like a part of me that I had been missing. I begged my parents to let me stay for a little while longer, and they let me, something I'm still in shock about. But I spent the next year trying to balance school and sports, at least until Burmondsy built an indoors snow centre then it was back home. I spent the next few years there, even getting a job there so I could ski in my time off. And, through years of dedication, I was able to make myself good enough to join the Newreyan team. I think the most annoying thing to come out of this will be that I can't go to the snow centre in piece in Lothan."

And she is likely correct in that assumption, as the streets of Port Lothan are filled with crowds celebrating one of their own placing in such a high place. The event is seen as remarkably unifying during a tough political time as tensions rise over Newrey's continued control of the northern half of the island. With Charlee proudly calling herself Newreyan, it is likely this may draw more support for current situation.

Verdict Delivered over Assaulted Athletes

During the celebrations ovr Newrey's performance of the day, the pubs, bars and restaurants were filled with excited Newreyan fans, along with a wide arrange of visiting nationals. Given the typically friendly nature of Newreyans to those they drink with, the night was largely calm and joyous. That was until reports started circulating about an alleged assault on the Glanish ice hockey team during a night out to celebrate their performance. Police quickly confirmed the event, however were unable to turn up any suspects involved in the attacks due to the quick scattering of the group when the Police intervened. Doctors quickly announced that the Glanish victims were in a stable condition in hospital.

The attacks quickly went viral over the supposed rampant homophobic behaviour of the average Newreyan, largely due to the fact one of those involved in the attack happened to be gay. The St.Quentin Mayoral Office denied this, stating that 'The whole incident was based on a few drunk Newreyans who were out looking for trouble. The supposed homophobic nature of the attacks is completely fabricated by the Glanish athletes that want to make it a larger issue than it already is.'. The St. Quentin Regional Court also announced that they would not be taking the case should a legal challenge be issued by the Glanish athletes.

2016AWG - Day 3 Preamble

Jumping to Glory?
Today, the third day of the 2016 Aeian Winter Games, is to be another fantastic and excited day of competition, and no less so for Ohen. Martin Ahlgren will be competing in the Men's Medium Hill Ski Jump. The 26 year old father of one is known as a solid jumper. Although he's never brought home a medal from any competition larger than Nationals, he remains hopeful. "Whatever happens today I'm just gonna go out there and jump like I always do. Once I leave the ramp it's out of my hands." Ohen wishes him all the luck in Aeia.

Hockeyists Hopeful
After Ohen's Men's Hockey Team failed to qualify for the Quarter Finals, they will have to play in the Play Off stage of the competition. We spoke to Team Manager Tomas Lindblad. "The boys have it in them, this I know for sure. They played three excellent games on the first day of the competiton. They drew 4-4 against Glanodel. What more could you want?"

"As their manager I'm very blessed, they are, all 20 of them, a strong unit. Friends all of them, if not even the best of friends. The coaches and I have done all we can, now it's up to the boys to make it happen on the ice."

Ohen is set for a record number of television viewers when the Hockey starts this afternoon. On Monday 44 million people reportedly tuned in across Ohen to watch the Ohen - Glanodel game. I'm sure all of us will keep our fingers crossed.

CPSN's First Gold!

Postby Pan-Slavic Nations » Fri Dec 23, 2016 8:15 am

Brought to you by The CPSNBC
Days Three and Four were so action-packed we hardly had time to write a report for those unable to watch.
First off, Ilina Riikita of the CPSN has won a silver medal for her nation with a fantastic performance at the Women's Medium Hill Ski Jump event on Day Three. A majestic run-up and jump earned her a total score of 252.5, 3 points ahead of Newrey's Ms Cole. "I've practised so hard and it's finally paid off! I never imagined that I would be up there, on the podium, amongst the world's greatest skiers, but here I am" Ms Riikita rejoiced.
Sadly, fellow male athlete Inri Lisenki and Yuri Lev failed to clinch a good spot in their respective events. However, Ursha Karina managed to get in 5th for the Women's Sprint and although not in the top three, the female runner was nonetheless proud of her result. "I did my best, and being 5th isn't that bad, anyways," Ms. Karina told the press.
The second round of hockey playoffs went spectacularly well for the CPSN, considering how bad the team did earlier. Although they got off to a bad start with a 2-3 loss to Ohen, a last-second goal by the promising attacker, Konisev Scarimandi, secured the CPSN a place in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory against Tarasanovia.
The Women's Ice Hockey went in the same direction, with CPSN maintaining an early 1-0 lead scored by Maria Mykyta against the Tarasanovian team, earning their place in the quarter-finals.
Day Four went marvelously with CPSN securing their first gold medal of the Games in the Men's Slalom event. Mr Gagarin beat Ohen's excellent Lofgren by a slim 1.40 seconds in what was has been one of the most anticipated events for the CPSN. Ms Riikita failed to deliver in the Women's Slalom with an unexpected DNF, but according to her, "It's the participation that counts". Many internet memes have popped up over her sudden silver–dnf performance and it has at least provided most with a hearty laugh.
The CPSN continues to fight for the 5th spot, with Iscandria and Midrasia sharing the same number of medals.

Aeian Winter Games: Day Three Roundup: Gold for soaring skier Thiaro
Ejla Mavo, 2016/21/12

Vrnallian ski jumper Zejdàr Thiaro is the proud winner of Vrnallia's first medal in the Winter Games - and astoundingly, it's a gold.

In the women's medium hill jump the Zalejker's first jump was strong, but fell short of the distances achieved by the likes of Pan-Slavic Ilina Riikita. But Thiaro's second jump blew her competitors away with an incredible 136m, giving a total of six metres ahead of silver medallist Riikita.

Thiaro was almost speechless: "I came in with so much confidence, so much determination that I'd do well today, but even getting a medal was not something I expected at all. To get a gold - I have no words!"

The men's hill jump saw many spectacular results, with Vrnallian jumper Maksima Hadzi narrowly missing out on a medal but managing a respectable fifth place. He was pleased with his performance.

"No, I did not get a medal, but I am happy with my performance. I came ahead of many very talented skiers and am proud. With a bit more training I could maybe have got bronze or better, so I will do that, and hope to come back in the future and do even better."

The men's and women's hockey teams did rather less well in their playoffs. Their string of losses continued with a narrow loss against the Crylante men's team and again by the Midrasian team, while the women's team lost to Iscandria. We spoke with the leader of the men's team, Kazdno Lama, who told us: "unfortunately, there's little we could do playing against people who have benefited from better training facilities and who are more skilled."

We understand that at least one St. Quentin bar will be housing some jovial Vrnallians later today.
It's Guakok now. She/her or they/them, pick your favourite.

2016AWG - Days 3+4 Round Up

Postby Ohen » Fri Dec 23, 2016 11:06 am

The Evening Standard

As the fourth day of competition closes at the 2016 Aeian Winter Games, so too does a great blanket of snow fall upon St.Quinten. Here's a quick round-up of the last two days of competition:

Soaring into Golden First!
Day three of the Winter Games kicked of with the Medium-Hill Ski Jumping. The women went first at around 09:30am, Newreyan time. Unfortunately Ohen had no entries into the Women's competition. The competitors all jumped excellently, with the Vrnallian, Zejdàr Thiaro, jumping a whopping 136m. THis was enough to win her the gold. Congratulations to Vrnallia and to Zejdàr Thiaro!

Later on at around 11am, Newreyan time, the Men's Medium Hill kicked off. Ohen's Martin Ahlgren was 8th to jump. He sped down the ramp and lifted off with fantastic speed. 136.5m is what he jumped, which immediately put him in the top spot, meaning he would jump last in the second round. Everyone jumped excellently, but no one came close to 136 at all. It wasn't until the Nausikaan favourite, Puro, jumped 133m that all of Ohen began to be on edge. Ahlgren came to the start line and launched off, he seemed to stay in the air for an age. He came down and landed perfectly. 134m! It was more than he needed to retain the top spot. Finally a man from Ohen had claimed a Gold medal. Cheers erupted across Ohen as people watched in awe and amazement.

Sprinting Success!
Simultaneously as the SKi Jump was ongoing, so too were the Biathlon Sprints. The Men's 10km kicked off first. Tomas Hansson was Ohen's great hope in this race, and it began very well for him. He kept a good pace throughout and only missed one target incurring a minor penalty time. All in all, a Silver for Hansson! "If it wasn't for thos 30 seconds I'd have had a chance at the Gold, but we all miss sometimes. It just so happened that I missed today, oh well. There's always next time." You may not have got the Gold, butOhen is immensely proud of you Martin, great job!

Now followed the Women's 7.5km Sprint. Things were very tense in the start zone as the Nausikaan and Glanish athletes set exceptional times. Then stepped up Ulrika Johansson from Ohen. The women who had only a year ago had knee surgery, in order to keep her dreams of competing again alive. She shot of off like a bat out of hell, and showed no signs of letting up. She shot every target with pin point accuracy. The place she lost time was getting up from the prone position, her operated knee giving her some trouble. But, once she was up she was immediately away again. It came to the fianl 500m and the Newreyan commentators struggled to keep their heads. She was ahead of the World Record, and wasn't slowing down! Ulrika Johanssoncrossed the finish line in a record time of 20:23.4, a new World Record!

All the news networks in Ohen immediately ceased all and began reporting on nothing else but Miss Johansson's amazing feat.

Pucking into th Quarter Finals
From afternoon until evening of Day 3 Ohen's Men's Hockey Team played for a spot in the Quarter Finals. They beat the boys from the CPSN 3-2, with the final goal being scored in the 18th minute of the third period. After this they went on to play the men oof Tarasanovia. The Tarasanovians played an especially aggrasive game with two fights almost breaking out on the ice. However, the boys from Ohen kept their cool and out played the Tarasanovians 3-2. Manager Tomas Lindblad had this to say: "Why they did it, didn't they! I couldn't be happier, we're through to the Quarter Finals and that's all that matters. Of course I shall be speaking to the players today and giving them feedback, but I feel they've earned a little rest. Especially after playing two of the most aggresive teams in the competition."

Ohen Speeds to Silver (and Bronze)
On the fourth day of the Winter Games, whilst the Curling competition was ongoing, the speed skating began. Today would be the 500m Short Track, and first up would be the men. In the first race was Julian Urdahl. He skated a respectable time of 41.731, which immediately put him in second place behind the Glanish athlete, Winther. It wasn't until the thrd and final race that Ohen's Mats Lindblad (of no relation to Tomas Lindblad, manager of Ohen's men's hockey team) had his turn. He would race alongsidethe Crylantian Thorirsson, the Midrasian Leste, and the Nausikaan Vaara. The pace was high from the very off, with both Lindblad and Vaara struggling to keep up. Lindblad, however, picked up the pace during the penultimate lap and finished with a good time of 41.613 seconds. It would be bronze for him.

The came the Women's 500m. Only two races of 5 would be run for the women. In the first race skated racers from:Newrey, Glanodel, Tarasanovia, Chen, and the CPSN. They all put in respectable times, except for the racer from the CPSN who overstepped the inner marking line and thus she was disqualified. The second race is what grasped the interest of the Ohenian people as many millions turned on their televisions to watch. Hellen Hagen would race against participants from Midrasia, Oserland, Nausikaa, and Yvilonia. The gun sounded and they were off at great speed. Hagen was neck and neck with the Midrasian Julles for much of the race, with the Nausikaan Otsola not far behind them. It wasn't until the very last moments of the race that Julles, from Midrasia, pulled ahead. Hagen had won the silver! Ohen is immensely happy with the results of both the Men's and Women's 500m races.

Passing the Gate
The fourth afternoon of the 2016 Aeian Winter Games was bright in St. Quinten, but cold. Clouds were visible to the Northwest. The slalom track was declared safe for racing to begin as planned. The eyes of the nation were upon Lucas Hagelin, whom was until today, quite possibly one of Ohen's most well know Apline Skiiers. Hagelin made a great run down the track, but was penalised by the judges for clipping the inside of one of the gates. This bumped his time down to 51.59 seconds. Second to last came the young Frederik Lofgren from Ohen. The youngster was quite inexperienced and his technique needed work, but gosh was he fast! he raced a time of 50.50 seconds, which for a short will put him in first. Only for the young Gagarin of the CPSN to come and beat them all. Lofgren would have to be content with silver and Hagelin with fifth.

The Women's Slalom quickly followed the men's. Annette Tjessem put on a great show and finished with an admirable time of 55.59 seconds. It wasn't, however, enough to knock the favourites from Glanodel, Nausikaa, and Newrey off the podium.

All the athletes from all the nations, especially those from our sunny Ohen, have performed great feats and shown that Aeia is truly a wonderful place. We in Ohen are most overjoyed to find ourselves at the top of the medal table with 5 Golds, 4 Silvers and 2 Bronzes!

2016AWG - Day 5 Preamble

Postby Ohen » Fri Dec 23, 2016 11:19 am

Great Expectations
After the two-man bobsleigh team on day 2 of the Winter Games, all expectations are high for the four-man team. The guys are set to race today, and with Ivan Darholm having shown himself to be a most formidable pilot, all of Ohen has it's fingers crossed. "I've chosen Max (Wildforss) as my brakeman, since he's the heaviest on the team. I don't want him on the back incase the tail comes out. We'll have Andre behind him and Hans right at the back. I know I've got myself a great crew here and all that remains is to put the bob on the ice and race." commented Mr. Darholm yesterday.

Figure Me This
On the evening of this the fifth day of the Winter Games, we shall see the top Male and Female figure skaters from all across Aeia come under one roof and all to skate their hearts out. Their are high hopes for both of Ohen's Singles National Champions, Harald Ostenson and Miranda Lerke. The young Ostensen is relatively new to the world of international Skating having not been old enough to attend the Pan-Asuran Winter Games three years ago. The seventeen year old may be a bit green, but he has plenty of talent. Whereas, Lerke, who took silver at the last Pan-Asuran Winter Games, has plenty of experience competing in front of foreign audiences. We are all hoping for the best results today.

The Ice is Nice for CPSN

Postby Pan-Slavic Nations » Sat Dec 24, 2016 8:02 am

Brought to you by the CPSNBC:
Day Five sure started off badly with no chance of victory for both the CPSN's four-man bobsleigh and ice skating teams. Things really heated up for the CPSN in the ice hockey quarter-finals, as they trounced Oserland 4-2 in the men's ice hockey, with the Oser team getting the first goal, followed by a fantastic goal by the CPSN team. After the first third, the CPSN team traded goals with the Oser team, scoring another goal each. In the final third, the CPSN team secured the victory with 2 goals by Lyvenski Borako and Konisev Scarimandi. "Mr Scarimandi is truly proving his worth to the CPSN's team right now, he will definitely be here again next year" praises the team's coach, Harfell Konorich. The CPSN's women's ice hockey team also didn't disappoint, luring the Oser team into a false sense of victory with two goal concessions in the first third, but came back with a turnaround three-goal-power play that took the unwary Osers by storm in the second third. A brilliant defense by CPSN's talented goaltender, Vivoni Carla, saved them from a potential draw. This means that both the CPSN's male and female teams will be going on to the semi-finals.
Show your continued support of our athletes and tune in to cheer them on, live on your device, with CPSNBC!
