Vik, Savalen

"Good morning and welcome to Vik, more specifically the Royal Tennis Centre. Tennis has been played here for 25 years, but this is the first time that foreigners have been allowed to participate in our tournament.

On Friday 9th, we celebrate the ending of the Battle of Vik, the first and last plave where fighting took place during the Revolution in the late 90's. More information will be posted about the day tomorrow!

Now, back to the schedule:

Serbian Tennis Guide

Magr Masters Qualifiers

All of the Serbian players are in the group play qualifiers. Top two advance out of each group. The hazard of guessing which Serbian player will make it to the round of 32 is hard to predict. Marisa Celeste Frieri seems like a good bet to advance in out of her group. Gisela Stefanovic would be the next most likely. Behind those two is a massive falloff with Vladimir Ivanov Ivanovic returning off of injury and the young but inconsistent Jade Oreskovic rounding out the odds. Any of them would be capable of advancing, but more than two of them doing so would likely result in early exits outside of group play as only Frieri has a win against any of the seeded players in her career.

TO: Ethanian Tennis Alliance
CC: NationStates Tennis Tour

To whom it may concern,

I write to you today in hopes that you will take notice of the mistake in selecting venues for the Ethanian Open. To preface, the Newton-Smith Tennis Center is truly a first-rate facility. It has been well constructed and maintained. The staff is professional and courteous, which is more than I can say for the residents of Lowes who are the source of dissatisfaction.

The population of Lowes is, simply put, among the most inhospitable and virulently hateful that I have ever had the displeasure to encounter. While they seem to particularly delight in tormenting homosexuals, simply being not white or Christian seems enough to make a person worthy of their harassment. Several Judean attendants to the Ethanian Open were attacked and forced to defend themselves in a tavern in downtown Lowes (see the attached police report). I am sure that there are a number of residents of Lowes to whom I am not doing justice, but these people are the exception and not the rule.

The Ethanian Open, like all events of the NationStates Tennis Tour, is an international event, drawing players from many different countries with as many different cultures. It is incumbent upon the hosting association to ensure that the venue selected for their event does not only provide a facility capable of meeting the needs of the tournament but also is located in an area where the participating players can be safe from such unwarranted attacks. I eagerly look forward to the next Ethanian Open when I’m sure the Ethanian Tennis Alliance will select a venue more conducive to the international nature of the tournament. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Hadar ben Ofer

The Lowes Bigotry Problem

When the Ethanian Open occurred, religious fundamentalists have heckled and tormented Judean attendees. On top of that, Gisela Stefanovic has reported she also was harassed when in the company of her wife who is widely known as the Serbian star of the NSTT. Few have known that Marisa and Gisela are married, but it seems that the hecklers know that they are in a Sapphic relationship. I would have no doubt that Marisa was holding hands with Gisela, but if the sight of two women holding hands is enough to set off hecklers, bigots, and worse in the city of Lowes then I have to consider the possibility of Serbian athletes being unable to rove around the cities that hold NSTT events. Lowes sets a new low in what I've seen in the NSTT in my career of covering this sport.

“You sent that letter?” asked Simcha bat Dor of Hadar ben Ofer.

“You bet I did,” he replied. “The Ethanians fucked up hard with the selection of Lowes and I’m making sure they know it. And the Tour. Hell, I’m thinking of making it an open letter.”

“Don’t.” Hadar raised an eyebrow at her response. “The Ethanians are already getting black eyes in international press over the matter. The Serbians are already tearing into them. I’ve heard rumblings that the Tour has taken notice. You’ve done your part. We’re in Vik now. Focus on the tournament. The rest will sort itself out.”

“We were attacked. For being Jewish.”

“And now we’re far away from there in Scandinavia. Lowes is behind us. Meanwhile, we have this tournament to play. Here, in Vik. Get your head here and out Lowes.”

“Alright. You’re right. I’ve got one more match in the group stage, and Ivanov is doing just as well as I am. I need to beat him to proceed. The Magr Masters first. Any follow up on Ethane comes second.”

NSTT - News
Tour comes to a close; administration must continue

As this year's tour comes to a close, administrative work by the NSTT never ends as the staff at the NSTT headquarters in Cenial, Ceni are busy confirming the schedule for next year, coordinating bidding for the NSTT Finals, and dealing with some last-minute administrative issues in order to close out the tour.

First of all, NSTT administrators have confirmed the receipt of two bids to host the NSTT Finals: the Elevation Tennis Stadium in Bergsstad, Kannap, a clay court, and the cubeMRC stadium in Zoloroni, Mercedini, an indoor hard court. NSTT President Sol Morin did not comment on which venue he preferred to host the tournament but merely commented that "both nations have hosted NSTT events successfully in the past, and I have every confidence that either nation will host an amazing Tour Finals for the NSTT, and that both will fulfill their duties admirably if selected." Currently, national federations are deliberating their votes, and the voting period is now underway; any national federation that sent athletes to a NSTT event is allowed to cast their ballot.

NSTT officials have also confirmed that the Astyrian Series and the Astyrian Slam will still be hosted next year, although with a slight change as the Neu Engollian Open will not be held this year due to some political friction between Neu Engollian officials and their Astyrian counterparts on the issue of visas and fair entry into the country (OOC: Neu Engollon left Astyria). That means everything should be moved up a week earlier, allowing for the completion of a Tier 2 event, the Kannap March Invitational, in the last week of March. NSTT officials also announced that the Hamilton International would keep its time slot in the calendar to round out the clay season.

NSTT officials also announced an important category change for next year, the introduction of the Tier 3 tournament tier type. President Morin said the goal of the Tier 3 was to allow more nations to enter the scene without the heavy pressure of hosting a more prestigious event, to distinguish some Tier 2 events as having more prestige than others, and to give opportunities for valuable ranking points to lower-ranked players, as it is very common to see multiple Top 10 players enter into a Tier 2 nowadays, but hopefully there would not be as many with a lower prize money pool. Winners would receive 300 points; runners-up, 225; semifinalists, 110; quarterfinalists, 55; octo-finalists, 25; and first-round losers, 5. Qualifying play would earn 3 per win. Currently, for the clay season, the Paradise City Open, Cadenzan Clay Trophy, and Nova Lisboa Open would be downgraded to a Tier 3, while the BCA Albergaria Trophy would retain its status.

Additionally, the NSTT was informed recently that, because of some maintenance being done on last year's venue for the Symphonian Masters, the tournament would be unable to go on as scheduled for next week, in the run-up to the NSTT Finals; the NSTT is rumored to be in talks with the Ethanian national federation to seek a replacement venue, although president Morin would neither confirm nor deny this. Regarding the Ethanian federation, the NSTT has confirmed the receipt of a letter from Hadar ben Ofer of Judea alleging discrimination by locals on the island of Lowes at the Ethanian Open. Morin stated that the NSTT was investigating the allegations and would be taking "appropriate action" with the Ethanian federation to prevent any such incidents from happening in the future.

Cut-Offs!

Important Info

  • (OOC) I'm extremely sorry for the cut-offs. I originally had something planned for the 9th, but that got cancelled. But life decided to replace that with an A&E (Accident and Emergency - hospital) visit for my dad. He's recovering from a broken leg now, but I hope you will understand why I waasn't able to scorinate yesterday.
  • (OOC) As such, everything has been moved by day in the competition - not too difficult.
  • (OOC) You can, of course, be as annoying, harsh and spiteful of the one day move. Or of course you can be understand and chivalrous of the official position and calmly and cooly carry on to win. You can blame your losses on the event or whatever.
  • (OOC) Due to the shifting of the schedule, Ceni (who doesn't have anybody playing in the qualifiers) will have his bonus rolled over to tomorrow.
  • The Savalen Tennis Union would like to remind participants and the media that events in Ethane should not, and will not, overshadow a great tournament here, thousands of miles away. It is hoped that all participants understand that Tennis moves on and that is extrememly bad manners to talk about the event outside of the official channels. The STU does understand that fans do wish to know the news, but asks to leave the controversy outside Savalen.
  • The STU is extremely sorry for the lack of matches on the 9th - this is due to terror threats found from sources near to the goddamn Isarius Government. The STU will not report on the validility of these reports, but wishes to say that upon further research, no evidence of anyhting other than the threat was found. Therefore, the Magr Masters will continue to play.

And we are live!

Did the dreadful delays cause a dreadful draw or a disasterous deuce in game 6?

NSTT - News
Update on the World Tour Finals

We have just two more tournaments left and the race for the World Tour Finals is getting down to the fine margins to determine the last few qualifiers. So, let's find out where we are and who could qualify for the tour-ending event.

In the singles competition, we have Botack Andiam, Lonus Varalin, Andy Amada, and Ciache Nagya, all Cenians, qualified already for their spot in the Tour Finals, having accomplished solid performances throughout the rest of the year to qualify already; this group includes all 4 of the season's Grand Slam champions. In the doubles, the top 5 contenders, Coosal Darlcheri/Gyrachor Rentos, Elia Xal/Fia Xal, Perger Rianor/Ricpeer Rianor, Ellela Thotan/Ciache Nagya, and Val Korekal/Jac Iegis, again all Cenians, have secured their spots in the finals, with two of the four Grand Slam champions represented in that mix.

And now we go to the contenders. In the singles, everyone below 1950 points has been eliminated from contention - due to only 1500 more points remaining in the calendar, and current number eight Dioro Hansil at 3450 points. Paul Quiront is also out of contention, given his NSTT suspension, and Marisa Maradona is eliminated due to her not showing up at the Magr Masters tournament. Jill Walker also was eliminated from contention yesterday after her first-round loss here in Savalen, meaning that she only has 1000 points available - not enough to make up the gap. Dagmar Liùsaidh is not mathematically eliminated yet - but as her federation has not entered in any events at all in the latter half of the year, it is likely she won't be entering the Merseyshore Masters.

That leaves the remaining contenders: 8 players for 4 places. Luke Pool of Schottia is in the most precarious position of them all: if Hansil wins today, he will be eliminated from contention - considering he is not entered here in Savalen, and would be more than 1000 points behind Neia Dovan, the new number eight in that situation. Ardil Navsal, the defending champion, is also in a precarious position: he will have to win the Merseyshore Masters to have even a shot at qualifying - and hope that Dovan doesn't win as well.

But after that, it gets less clear-cut: Simcha bat Dor, Kika Dovan, Neia Dovan, and Dioro Hansil are fairly close to each other in terms of points, while Johmer Vales and Cathy Krumins, depending on results, will most likely seal up official qualification by the end of this tournament - it's pretty unlikely, but possible, that they'll be unseated. All of these contenders - except for Neia Dovan - are still in contention here in Savalen. Given a Vales win here, he would officially seal his spot at the Tour Finals; a win for Krumins would seal her spot in the finals as well. Depending on how well Kika Dovan does, she may be able to overtake her sister for eighth place. In the end, though, it seems that the last two spots will only be settled at the Merseyshore Masters.

In the doubles, the #10 and #11 ranked teams, Hadar ben Ofer/Anat ben Yonah and Rob Westfelt/Ken Gates respectively, are trailing the pack by about 1200 points - and their main rivals for qualification are still in (except for Bowermars/Syncole of Ethane). Both teams would have to at least reach the semifinals and do better than Nolovor/Korden by at least 220 points in order to have even a shot - if not, then they will automatically fall out of contention, and we will have our eight qualifiers at the end of this tournament. If so, though, the contest will be drawn out until the Merseyshore Masters - and it would only take a Nolovor/Korden win to send them through. So it will likely take a lot of luck to send either of these teams through to the last 8, but that's still within the realm of possibility.

Cross-Court: Your NSTT Roundup

Controversy Over End of Season tournaments

After the Symphonian Masters were dropped from the NSTT calendar in somewhat mysterious circumstances, possibly due to financial and organisational difficulties, Ethane was chosen to host the seasons final Tier 1 tournament in Merseyshore, a decision which has angered some nations considerably.
After the Ethanian Open, held in Lowes, some Judean athletes claimed that the island city was the most hostile and backwards venue they had ever played in, mainly due to the anti-gay sentiments found across the city. The pinch-point was a reported bar-brawl between Judean athletes and locals in downtime Lowes, which ended in messy scenes between players, police and local thugs.
The incident was largely hushed up by officials, not wanting to overshadow the quality tennis on show, but a leaked letter sent to the Ethanian Tennis Alliance by Hadar ben Ofer, one of the Judean players involved in the brawl, claimed that not only the LGBT community, but also non-whites and non-Christians, were subject to harassment.
An Ethanian statement claimed that a wave of anti-establishment de-liberalisation was responsible for the feelings, following the legalisation of same-sex marriage and paedophilia by the GreenerEthane party. This was labelled as 'ridiculous' and 'a step too far' by many, particularly the traditionally more conservative population of the island of Lowes.
Whilst upsetting, the sentiments can be explained. Yet with a massive spectrum of competitors converging in one place for the NSTT tournaments, many feel that the unstable political and demographical climate in Ethane means the tournament, as well as Ethane's own tier 2 event, should be held elsewhere until stability is achieved.
Many countries have discussed a boycott of Ethanian tournaments, but with a healthy allocation of ranking points available for the Tier 1 event, participation is tempting for those on the fringes of qualification for the tour finals, which is currently also without a host venue, as well as lesser players looking for a boost in the rankings.
Mattijanan sports minister Julian Petrov said that a Mattijanan boycott was "highly unlikely", given the normal policy of keeping sports away from politics. Yet even this view has come into criticism from civil-rights activists for 'disrespecting gay people' and 'prioritising ranking points above tolerance'.
As the tournament creeps closer, the debate will undoubtedly become more heated. But with no obvious replacement for the final Tier 1 event, it looks like the tournament will progress.

"Did you leak it?" asked Anat ben Yonah.

"No," replied Hadar ben Ofer.

"You had some pointed things to say in the letter, and now that you're out of contention-"

"I didn't leak it. I sent the letter and then focused on the tournament. That's it."

"Okay. So what do we do about this? We're going to get questions about it."

"I'll confirm that I wrote a letter to the Ethanians expressing concerns about the selection of Lowes for the tournament and that I copied the letter to the Tour. I'm not going to speak out about it."

"There has been talk about boycotts," Simcha bat Dor said.

"We can't afford it," Hadar told her. "You're in the running World Tour Finals. So are Anat and I. We need the points to get in the finals and besides. I said in that letter I had confidence that they would do better next time. How does it look if the next time I say that I don't have confidence in them? We're going to Merseyshore. End of discussion."

"Alright then," Simcha replied. "Let's go boys. We've got tournaments to win."

Tennis special - Magr Masters

With the tennis season beginning to wind down, we are now entering the calm before the storm of the NSTT-Finals. For a great many players out there on the tour, their inclusion in that prestigious final eight is indication that they have finally made it, and can now pull up a chair at tennis' top table. Competition has been fierce this season, with the Cenians raising the bar to a whole other level. At points, especially to the middle part of the year, the stars from that small South Rushmori island seemed almost unplayable, as they cleaned up time and time again. With their players taking all of the grand slams, and all bar one of the Tier One Mandatory category tournaments, it is easy to see why they will make up the lion's share of the finalist. The emergence of players such as Simcha bat Dor, and Alice Curson, have served to break up the white orange and red wash a little, however, it may be next season before we see what those guys can really do.

Schottia's debut season on the tour has been a resounding success (given the scant hopes we had back at the start of the year). For a country that has literally no tradition of the sport, outside of a few North Island pockets, all we could do was cross our fingers and hope for the best. Long-time national number one Luke Pool stood up fairly well, in taking to the world stage. The 31-year-old, in the twilight of his career, now has a quarterfinal appearance at the Cenian Open to show for his troubles. Defensive baseliner Jill Walker has also given a good account of herself, her run to the final of the Championship New Oxford will be a massive highlight. When you add to that, Eliza Reusmann and John Muir, who have both crept into the top fifty, then it's been a fairly successful showing.

Schottia's shinning light this season, however, has been 18-year-old Catherine Krumins. The girl from Sant-Dos been the one player who has really pushed hardest this season. The highly aggressive baseliner already has the Whitehaven Open under her belt, as well a final appearance at the Handon Open on home soil. For a player who by her own admission struggles on grass, these performances are all the more impressive. Runs to the quarters at both the AOpen and Cenian Open, as well as the semis of the Cenial Masters and in San Salvador, have meant that she has an excellent chance of making it to the end of season showpiece. Despite all this, her crowing glory was perhaps one that she shared with the rest of the Schottian team, in lifting the International Tennis Trophy. Alongside Luke Pool, and veteran pair Ken Gates and Rob Westfelt, as they saw off stiff competition from Ceni in the final, to secure the World Cup of Tennis. The tournament was a real coming together of the old and new, with the then 17-year-old outshining her vastly more experienced teammates.

With only two tournaments to go now, all eyes are on the Magr Masters, where after a disappointing drop in form, Krumins has made it through to the quarterfinal, giving herself a real chance of victory. The ominous figure of Johmer Vales is of course lurking in the top half of the draw, and should she make it that far, then it would be a very interesting match up between these two on this surface. For someone so young, there are always going to been peeks and troughs, as she looks to challenge the players at the top. In some ways too much success too quickly could have a pejorative effect on some players, but based on what we have seen, the North Islander is a girls with her head screwed on. Krumins has a real thirst for success, that much is clear to see - Key to seeing out this season, however, may well be stamina, and that is something which will come with time.

The 18-year-old hasn't dropped a set so far, disposing firstly of Mattias Burges, then Hunter Roberts in a more or less straightforward manner, even if she needed a first set tiebreaker against the Electrumite. Krumins will now play friend and countrywoman Reusmann for a place in the semi-final. The two have met recently, in the final of the Whitehaven Open so both will know exactly what to expect. There, Krumins emerged as 7-6 7-5 winner in what was a close battle, and it would be foolish to bet against her doing the same again. Reusmann made the most of the grass court season, where her overall game is far more resilient, but you have to feel that indoors she is going to struggle against the hard-hitting teenager. Reusmann needs to keep things moving, vary the shots, and unsettle her opponent. If she allows the match to descend into a baseline battle, then the highly mobile clay court specialist, Krumins, will wrap this one up very quickly.

Whatever happens this week, it is highly likely that the battle for the remaining places will go down to the wire, when we switch our focus to the Mersyshore Masters in Ethane, which replaces the Symphonian Masters as the curtain closer. Given the standard of tennis we have seen so far this year, whether there is a Schottian there or not, it is likely to have us on the edge of our seats.

Cross-Court: Your NSTT Roundup

Slazic/ Basic Spectacularly Beat Number 1 Seeds

Many were considering Mattijanan involvement at the Magr Masters in Savalan to be as good as over following a tough draw which saw both Mattias Burges and Aljaz Corluka deposed in straight sets to Catherine Krumins, the number 1 seed, as well as the number 2 seed. Doubles hope, Julian Slazic and Lara Basic were also handed the toughest possible draw against Britonisean pair Leo Garry and Elizabeth Quehall, the number 1 seeds.

The Mattijanans, who are on paper the weakest side remaining in the tournament, made a valiant, but fruitless start, taking their opponents to 5-5 with some hard fought service games, before finally succumbing to the pressure with a hard, but badly-placed forehand from slazic being tucked away at the net by Garry at the net. Quehall then held her nerve to serve out the set.
Most of the Britonisea supporters thought that the result of the 1st set would end the match as a contest. By the end of the 4th game, they were silent.
A solid service game from Slazic steadied the ship before an unusually cagey service game from Garry was exploited by the consistently awkward Basic, who eventually tempted both Britonisean players into snatched errors. In trouble at 15-40 down, another looping return from Basic evaded the racket of Garry at the net and was skewed long by Quehall, looking for the winner down the line.
Basic held her own serve, before changing tack on return to fire some brutal returns both cross court and into the feet of Quehall at the net, who buried two volleys in the net before being exquisitely beaten with a low ball down the line.
Slazic blasted down more serves to make the score 5-0 and although Quehall managed to hold her own serve, Basic went back to being awkward to win the set 6-1.

The deciding set was put back into the balance early on, as the Britonisean pair managed to assert themselves during their first service game and mount more of a challenge on the serve of Slazic, who managed to ride out a deuce. Yet it was once again the Mattijanan pair who took the initiative in the 3rd game, Slazic playing a spectacular stretching volley off a tempting cross-court ball to hand the break to the Mattijanans.
An onslaught of pressure came the other way, with the number 1 seeds finally finding their impressive radar to stretch the Mattijanans. They were mere millimetres away from breaking straight back as a short ball by Basic was thwacked back cross court by Garry, with Basic's stretching return left by Quehall and called long by the linesman, yet on a fairly desperate challenge, the ball was found to have clipped the baseline, leaving the Mattijanans able to recover.
Similar games followed, with the Mattijanan duo just about able to survive before launching a more confident service game to finally hold out for the win.

The Mattijanans are the only unseeded team remaining in the doubles draw, and will take on New-Gelderland's Harry Blackwood and Liam Penderyn for a place in the semi-finals.
