NationStates College and Youth Hockey Season I

Its finally that time of year, as we settle into December, the snow falls over the lands, the college football season wraps up and the hockey arenas light up. The Zamboni machines blast their engines, laying down new ice onto the arnea floor. The cracked Plexiglass, there since day one once again is tasked with absorbing the fans. The smell of beer and drinks fill the air, a championship banner rises into the rafters. The announcer clears his throat, the lights shone down on you... You grab your gloves, your stick, you skate out to center ice, its that time of year.

Woop, woop! Welcome to the first ever edition of NationStates College and Youth Hockey, here, you will be able to post your team's rosters and do all of their in-character role-plays. OOC comments, questions and concerns should be kept to the OOC thread.

---

THe first season of NSCYH features 20 teams from fourteen nations. We highly encourage all players to actively roleplay their teams, no matter how [in]experienced they happen to be. Each of the conferences have ten teams apiece, teams will play each other in a quadruple round-robin for a total fo 20 in-conference games. After all twenty conference games, a Conference champion shall be crowned. Games will be scorinated give times a week: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Score cutoffs will be decided by each conference host.

Following all twenty conference games, there will be ten non-conference or inter-conference games. These games will have no affect on the conference championships, however, they shall affect the postseason qualifiers, [ i.e., Team A wins Star Conference, however, loses all non-conference games, drops to fifth place and out of playoffs, still retains Conference Championship ].

The postseason format is as followed: Each conference shall have their separate postseason playoff to see who will qualify for the NSCYH Championship Series. The individual conference postseason games shall be best-of-3 series. The winners of each conference's playoffs shall sqaure off in a best-of-7 held on neutral territory.

Longford University Lightning
Rayo de Universidad Longford
Longford Uni Litenin

Team colours: ocean blue, navy blue, gold

Longford University is a university just located on the outskirts of Aldenport, Autumnia. Named after a nearby town (which would later be merged into Aldenport in the early 1940s), it was originally founded in 1935 as a small private Catholic university. However, it would later become secular in 1953. As a result, the grounds were expanded twice - in 1955 and again in 1968 - just to accommodate the large amount of new students arriving. This would later turn out to be a blessing as this led to a cornucopia of sporting talent; their rugby [union] team came top of the 1968/69 Premier University Rugby League of Elejamie (or PURLE, pronounced "pearly", for short); their soccer team won the University Soccer League three times in a row (1969/70-1971/72); and, in 1970/71, the basketball team managed a record 67-11-2 (67 wins, 11 losses, 2 overtime losses) in the University Basketball League, a record which still stands to this day.

Their ice hockey program, however, didn't get underway until 1967. Originally, it was a bit of a slow start, as their first few games saw them lose by at least six goals (the lowlight being a 19-0 thrashing by the University of Avon Ice Cats, which still stands as the team's biggest loss). However, they managed to pick up the pace by the 1969/70 season, thanks to an overhaul in coaching, tactics and equipment, and made it to their first playoff appearance that very same season (where they lost their opening series against the University of Davenport 4-1). However, they managed to bounce back from that and, in 1975, they made it to their first Forrest Cup (which is sort of like the Stanley Cup for Elejamian university ice hockey) final, where they pulled off a shock 4-3 win in their series against Coventry University. They would later win the tournament again in 1983 and get back to back trophies in 1989 and 1990. One last Forrest Cup win came in 1995 but, since then, they've either missed the playoffs or got knocked out in the first round.

Famous Lightning players include Tim Furst, former Rosetta Royals, Elejamie City Ice Elephants and national team left-winger; Raheem Halabi, Davenport Dockers and national team right-winger who was frequently paired with Elejamian ice hockey legend Michael Madgwick from 1997-2006 (when the latter retired); Viktor Markelov, a Novozemlyan defector who later went on to play in goal for the Mainsborough Icemen, Barr Bears and Auckhampton Fathers; and Mike Keller, a right winger currently with the Mainsborough Icemen and a scratch for the national team. Non-ice hockey playing alumni include Jasmine Blacklock, mayor of Mainsborough; Ray Hanson, executive director of Hanson's Brews and eldest son of company founder and chairman Robert Hanson; Rick Grant, loose forward with the Aldenport Vikings rugby league team; and Raquel Gallardo, former flanker for the Lirios de la Playa de Rocas and Blackport Tridents women's rugby teams, currently an assistant coach as Lirios.

They also have blue helmets and gloves in the team colours. I would've made them myself (in the same way I did my gloves and helmets for the national team) but the sites I tried to use weren't working.

Sherbourne Arena, just outside of Aldenport, ATMN
Image

Named after the first president of the university, Father Joseph Sherbourne (1861-1943), Sherbourne Arena opened in 1987 as an on-site ice hockey and basketball arena; before then, all basketball and ice hockey games were played in town at the original Aldenport Memorial Building (which closed down in 1999 and demolished the following year). It was also the training facility for the men's inline hockey team, who would later go on to win gold at the inaugural Multiverse games back in August 2015. Around 3,000 people can fit in the stadium, pretty much making it the smallest arena in the NSCYH.

Re-using my RP permissions from the 30th World Cup of Hockey, with a few adjustments.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose My Scorers: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to My Players: Yes (but nothing fatal or season/career-ending)
Godmod Injuries to My Players: Yes (same as above)
RP Penalties for My Players: Yes
RP Ejections for My Players: Yes (one per game)
Godmod Other Events: Depends on what it is, so it might be a good idea to TG anything you have in mind.

  • If you do wish to RP one of our games, please get back to me with your team's info (i.e. who scored, who assisted them, who got penalised, etc.) by 8pm GMT.
  • In the event that any of my players interest you and you want to sign them, please tell me which one you want, which club wants them and all the details.
  • If you wish to include any of my players in your draft, go ahead (especially since we don't have one here in Elejamie). Just let me know which team's drafted them, which round (and number) they were drafted and what they're offering contract-wise.
  • Mat Suárez and Tommy García are cousins; the former's mother is the latter's aunt. Going by the the standard Spanish naming custom (father's surname followed by mother's), their names are Matías Suárez García and Tomás García Espinosa.
  • Remember that it's AE at the beginning of Sataeveni AEcoret's surname, as AE/ae is a letter in the Iyilim alphabet. Think of it as a bit like "ij" in Dutch. Æ is also acceptable. NEVER write "Ae", as that's incorrect.
  • The Lightning will wear their alt uniform on their first home game of the new year and their first cross-conference home game.

SavojarSports.sj - inside reports from all Savojarna
The Thorsborg PA Academy is sending its youth to the international scene

Thorsborg, VH
- As bad as CASK may be in the current league, their disappointing run is far from what the People's Army expects from its prestige project. The PA seems to have turned to other goals now, with the new international NSCYH league being their new way of bringing glory to Savojarna and its Red Army. CASK's academy remains the best address for young Savojar talents, given its program of 24/7 care and focus on ice hockey. Students at the age of 16 can access the PAA in Thorsborg by submitting to the so-called early voluntary draft (EVD) procedure, that is used not only for ice hockey but for all kinds of special talents the Army can use, as long as these do not involve fight action, for which one has to be 18. It was originally established for prospective officers receiving tactical and technical education before their actual army involvement, for technicians and engineers and for other specialised army functions, but was also used for sports since the 1990's Sport Professionalisation Program. The EVD procedure is open to all Savojar nationals from the beginning of the year in which they turn 16. Most PAA hockey players are scouted by CASK officials, but many also compete through submitting themselves to the EVD procedure. This way is, however, somewhat harder since officials obviously rely on their scouts' reports. Please note that the PAA is not a "real" university, but a military academy where people only receive army-specific education. The sole exception from this is sports - the hockey players are professionals (even though officially they are soldiers) and do not have any non-hockey classes except if they specifically ask for them. This is somewhat common among the young players, since it is not sure that they will actually make it to the SHS.

DRAFTS AND TRANSFERS

The SSA (Savojar Sports Authority) does not allow players to be drafted in foreign leagues. However, players can - with SSA's permission - leave the country if they have a contract offer by professional teams. It is also possible to transfer players inside the league, even though the SSA does not like to see this especially with players over 18 - those are officially military conscripts and Savojar paperwork is a bitch. Also, the SSA prefers to keep talents in their team because it thinks of the NSCYH as an opportunity to give young talents high-level hockey training, not as a competitive league on its own that teams should aim to win at all costs.

MT socialist (mostly) island state - Cultural mixture of Scandinavia, Finland and Russia -Exports iron, steel, silver and wood - Low fantasy in terms of animal species - Sports-loving - 22.8 million inhabitants.

The adjective is Savojar; Savojarnan is not a word!
I am a student of (European) politics, ice hockey fan, left-wing communist bordering on anarchy, and European federalist. Enjoy!

SavojarSports.sj - inside reports from all Savojarna
PT Hovikkära's youth joins Thorsborg in NSCYH

Hovikkära, SU
- As could be expected with the competitive nature of Savojarna's state institutions, the announcement of CASK to send its People's Army Academy team to the NSCYH was swiftly followed by an announcement of the Communist Party to do the same with their PT team. The Hovikkära based squad gets fielded by the party-sponsored Central Hockey Academy (CHA). The CHA is, unlike CASK's academy system, open for younger talents from 12 years onwards. Players remain at CHA until they are 20, in this time being suspended from army conscription, or rather being filed as "special interest soldiers", a category of troops that do not do traditional military work but work for the party. However, they only get drafted with 18 or 19 like all young Savojars. CHA students start out with a one-to-two units per day training regime during which they still receive school education, which gradually fades out until students are 16. At this point, they get sorted into one of the three main teams or the U18 team, seen as a "last chance" to make the real, U20 squad. From this point on, students only receive school education if they receive a special permission, in which case they enroll in a different school in Hovikkära. The Hockey Academy only offers classes until 16 years of age. The players in Young PT U20, who participate in the NSCYH, are full-time hockey players with two to three training units a day.

SavojarSports.sj - inside reports from all Savojarna
Background: The History of Savojar Hockey

Savojarna lies buried under ice for most of the year, and sports have been popular in the region forever. Skiing and especially cross-country have a long tradition in Savojarna that predates written history, and so do team sports. However, they were usually more something along the lines of rugby on ice, snow, frozen lawns or everything else that was available, often resulting in bloody fights. Records from the year 953 [OOC: this equals 953 AD on earth, I follow human timelines] show a decree of King Sven II. of Jarnstad, ordering that carrying weapons during ball games is forbidden and punishable by prison and confiscation of the offender's property. According to chronicles from Sjoedrhavn, in 978 "thirty-seven men, all able-bodied warriors, died in a game of ball and club. The King (Harald I. of Sjoedrhavn, ed.) ordered the game not to be played anymore. Whoever shall be found doing so, will be punished by forced labour of three years". We do not know what this early game looked like, but historians assume it was a mixture of bandy, football, rugby and boxing.

For years, the only organised games to be played with sticks were bandy (which is almost not played anymore) and field hockey in the summer, which was also transferred to ice in the winter without changing the rules. In the 1960s, after the Revolution, travellers to the more hockey-friendly nations of Rushmore brought the game to Savojarna. It quickly spread throughout the nation, and in 1966 the first league was founded in Russica, a part of the nation that had never been too fond of bandy given its less cold environment. This meant that most of the time, they could not playas much as the northern islanders, placing them at disadvantage. The league quickly spread and in 1971, the first Savojar championship was played out among amateur clubs. The sport, despite its national appeal, never really became professionalised though. Hockey games were mostly a people's celebration. Only in the 1990s, the government decided on the Sports Professionalisation Act which asked public institutions - governments, military and unions - to set up semiprofessional sports clubs. First, this was intended to draw crowds to sports, and to improve the level of competition in the nation. 2002, the first nation-wide ice hockey league was founded, but it was still a amateur league.

In 2008, Savojarna decided to take up international competition. As a goal, it set the 2015 World Cup of Hockey 30, but then had to skip this goal due to a scandal in the hockey federation. It was decided to delay the start of international competition by a year to make it correlate with the foundation of the SHS, a league that was part of the International Competition Program of the authorities. Some of the most successful union hockey teams were invited to compete in a professional league, while the government and military were given the rest of the spots to fill up the league. Announcing the SHS caused a big boost to Savojar hockey, especially in youth development. Up to then, only the military and the Communist Party's Hockey Academy did proper youth development. Now, youth hockey is widely spread and the number of licensed junior players (from 5 to 20) is almost 40'000 throughout the nation. Of course, not all of these even come close to playing in the SHS or one of the top youth leagues, but the young players are looking forward to set the world on fire.

A special aspect of Savojar ice hockey has always been that many players do play handball in summer, or the also very popular floorball. This combination of ice hockey with two other very fast and, in the case of handball, very physical indoor sport means that many players have a strong physique and good speed. Those two qualities also dominate Savojar hockey. The Savojar style is very tactical, building on a solid defense and control of the middle zone leading to very fast counter-attacks. Savojarna attempts to score on 3-on-2 or 2-on-1 situations rather than a long time in the zone, and their goals are often coming from a quick cross-crease pass rather than a deflection or a rebound. One-on-one fighting is rare and frowned upon in Savojarna, and gets punished by a game misconduct, but some players certainly can hold their ground.

Young players and old players now feel the rush of the opened borders for hockey players and the international competition, making Savojar hockey one of the new vibrating cores of the sport. NSCYH is seen by many as only the first step to new glory in the nation.
