WELCOME & INTRODUCTION
Welcome, coaches, players, fans, enthusiasts, analysts, journalists, wagerers, and innocuous bystanders, to Handball World Cup 18! Will RedBlackiland come back to win the Cup back-to-back, or will Costa de Ouro come back with a vengeance and win yet another title (#4)? Or maybe somebody else will break through the playoffs and come to win and surprise us all ... somebody like YOU!

Held in the massive and prosperous nation of Drawkland, we hope you'll enjoy this tournament, as the Drawkian International Sporting Council (DISC) and the rest of Drawkland have gone through every length possible to make this as comfortable and enjoyable as possible for all fans - even if we're all a little bit different from each other. Because above all, we're here to play some sport, specifically the intense and breakneck sport of Handball. So let's have some fun!

FORMAT & GROUPS
We have a number of 24 teams signed up for this Handball World Cup, so, as specified in the bid, there will be 6 groups of 4. Group draw will be held 2 days from now.
The top 2 nations in each group will be seeded after the group stage concludes. The Top 4 teams will be given a Bye to the Quarterfinals, while the worst 2 winning teams and all the second place teams will be seeded into the Round of 12.

If we get 4 or 8 more signups before I conduct the draw I will change to the 28 or 32 nation formats as needed.

SCHEDULING & CUTOFF

CUTOFF TIME WILL BE SOMETIME BETWEEN 9PM and 10PM EASTERN STANDARD TIME. Check here if you're not sure how much longer you have left and/or are bad at timezones.
There will be a 48 interval, roughly, between each matchday, to encourage roleplay, and also to make sure the tournament doesn't just last 1 week. Final match will be held 24 hours after the Third Place Game, since any later will greatly interfere with holidays and because they already get an extra 24 hours to roleplay, they don't need an extra 48.

Home team listed first for group stage, even though there's no home field advantage in scorination, and IC'ly the matches are held in Drawkland. First match held in the early afternoon, second match held after sundown. More IC info to come later.

ROLEPLAY PERMISSIONS
As you probably know, NS Sports is a roleplay forum. Since sometimes your opponent will roleplay your match before you do, you should post this RP Permissions box on your roster post so that they don't do anything you don't like. This is a standard for NS Sports, and I really don't know why I'm saying anything about it. I think y'all know the drill.

HANDBALL WORLD CUP 18 - DRAWKLAND

Handball World Cup 18 will be held in a very small area, namely, the "twin cities" of Drawk City and Metropolon: the largest city and the capital, respectively. This was done both to truly showcase the most of Drawkian culture and because the infrastructure of both cities is very impressive and quite well-maintained. Each group will play all their games in a specific venue, the first listed game happening in the early afternoon and the second listed game right around sundown. Some are dedicated handball arenas, while other are repurposed basketball stadiums or multi-purpose venues (even though all 3 are basically the same, right?). Each stadium will also have some playoff games held there, and these will be listed for your convenience.

DRAWK CITY
The largest city in the nation, sprawling through a massive swath of land in northern Drawkland. It has many millions of citizens living there, and there's so much to do that a writer once said "You could spend a lifetime trawling the streets of Drawk City and still never see all there is to see." The land is relatively flat, eventually sloping to mountains in the north, and being intersected by the massive, churning waters of the Drawkland River. All 4 arenas here are spread quite apart, so it's highly unlikely for even fans of teams from different groups to run into each other when they're out on the town. The public transit is really well put-together, an aerial view of the city features roads, tracks, and lines of airships crisscrossing every part of the city.
Image
Corps Central Court will play host to Group 1, and also host a Quarterfinal game and the Third Place game. It's the famed basketball court of the Drawk Corps, repurposed temporarily to play host to the Handball World Cup. It has a lot of history, and is heralded as perhaps the best small indoor arena in all of Drawkland. Situated in the Corps Complex in the center of town, it's very close to the main attractions of the downtown city. Being part of the Corps Complex, the Drawk Corps HQ, there's many Corps-themed and Drawkland-themed stores and businesses that fans can check out while they're there.

Image
Corps Outpost Arena will host Group 2, a Quarterfinal Game, and the Handball World Cup Final. It is the indoor arena owned by the Drawk Corps which is further in town, away from the hotspot Corps Complex. It's nested within several Corps buildings and businesses, it's one of the best multipurpose arenas in Drawkland. Its main appeal, however, is that it plays home to the Drawk Corps handball team and hosts the Carpal Bowl (Handball League final) quite often. It may not be in the center of town, but it's still a great spot in the city, with several concert halls nearby.

Image
Sentinel Indoor Stadium is slated to host Group 3, a Quarterfinal Game, and a Semifinal Game. It's undoubtedly the most high-tech arena in the nation, however, it's not the largest or the most famous. Its glass exterior allows the stadium to literally glow during games, giving it a beautiful aesthetic appeal. In the case of the Handball World Cup, it will glow with the national colors of the team which is currently leading the match, so even those who don't want to buy tickets to every game can keep up with the action, to a degree. It's the home of the Drawk City Sentinels basketball team.

Image
River Guard Arena will be the home of Group 4, a Quarterfinal Game, and a Semifinal Game. It's the largest and best dedicated Handball Arena in Drawkland, as it is the home of the Drawk City Guard, the handball team located in Drawk City. It "floats" out on the banks of the Drawkland River (it's actually built on a very small peninsula that jutted into the river), and is seen clearly from City Bridge 7, one of the busiest that crosses the river. There are many riverfront shops and bars that fans will be able to partake.

METROPOLON
The second largest city in Drawkland, only a relative stone's throw away from Drawk City (if, say, the stone was actually a boulder thrown from an aircraft-carrier sized trebuchet). It was a predesigned city for the modern age, and it's a perfectly symmetrical circle shape, with an odd but easy-to-understand circular-nested grid making up its street network. In the epicenter of the city is the massive Pinnapex, a skyscraper that dwarfs any other building on Sonnel. The buildings around it slowly diminish in height in perfect harmony, making the skyline look almost like a parabola or a tight bell curve from afar. A few blocks from the center of the city, the skyscraper line breaks, for a collection of stadiums are placed in a ring around the same loop street.
Image
The Ring will host Group 5 as well as two Round of 12 games. Located in the heart of Metropolon, it's the home of all the basketball teams in Metropolon, but has been repurposed specifically for this prestigious event. It's very near to the best-looking buildings and is extremely hi-tech. It's surefire that any team and fan there will enjoy their time during the games and during the off-time before and after games.

Image
National Handball Arena is set to host Group 6 and two Round of 12 games. It's away from the Loop in the center of town, on the more "outskirts" part of the city. As such, it's easier to get to, but the higher-class amenities and attractions aren't as easy to access. The Metropolon Rings, the Handball team located in Metropolon, play their home games here. It's slightly bulky too, as the offices and Hall of Fame for the team are also included as well as a few restaurants and bars.

Juven National Handball Team

Juvencus is one of the lucky nations that gets to participate in the 18th version of the Handball World Cup of nationstates. Nations from all over the multiverse are gathered there to enjoy this exciting event, which is not only gonna elevate antagonism in newer heights but it's also going to include some newer additions. The 38 million people island nation of Juvencus is officially bringing its national handball team, the "Gli attaccanti", one of the most offensive teams in this tournament, with an explosive offence. (OOC: Which I will explain below) The Gli attaccanti is definetely a team everyone should look out for, since its the first time they're participating, which means the players are going to get to the court more excited than most opposing teams. Here's the official squad:

Basic lineup
GK: Nicodemo Somma
Centre: Alfredo di Caprio
LB: Aurelio Azzarà
RB: Francesco Negrini
CR: Gabriele Sapienti
LW: Nico Alamani

Assistant Coach 1: Gianluigi Belleronte
Assistant Coach 2: Crescenzo Bellomo
Doctor 1: Colombano Mondugno
Doctor 2: Ippolito Trucco
Dietologist: Elia Romero

General facts
Kit colours(Home): Red with gold stripes
Kit colours(away): Navy blue with a diagonal teal line
Handballing history/National team history: Only amateur handball has been played in Juvencus, the people weren't much into it until recently, handball's increasing in popularity after being the second most popular sport, after association football, which dominates the country's sports landscape. The process in picking the first national team was settled in a competition with many experienced raters for handball which picked the best of each's position according to their personal and team performance. The national team is a relatively new phenomenon in Juvencus, but in the amateur history of the players, the team plays ultra offensive and it's one of the most aggressive teams in the competition, despite the defensive culture of Juvencus. This explains the nickname of the team "Gli attaccanti".
(This means my style modifier is +4)

If my opponent RPs first, I give him/her permission to:
Choose my goalscorers: Yes, but some of them, let the opponent focus on my RP so he/she sees who I'm routing for the most to score
Godmod scoring events: No
RP injuries to my players: No, unless I give them permission
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Hand out yellow cards to my players: Yes
Hand out red cards to my players: With permission only
Godmod other events: Yes/No

After their debut in Quebec, Qasden had made their mark in the sport of handball. At their inaugural HWC, the 17th edition, they squeezed past St Trinians and Thatius to reach the round of 16, where they were ultimately and brutally slaughtered by eventual champions, Red Blackiland. Returning to the court for the first time since, Coach Mayward and the Vans look to take something not many Qads have been successful at getting....the championship trophy. Starting right here, right now in Drawkland, TQ Handball will consist of 21 players, 7 more than their original. Can we surpass RB and earn the golden W in a way like Saint Kanye in IBC20? Or will we fall in the group stages to the hands of a freshly new team? The only ref to call is Maggie, so here come the BRs, live at the 18th Handball World Cup in Drawkland!

The Royal Gadiryan Handball Federation (RGHF) presents
The Gadiryan National Handball Team

Handball is Gadirya's traditional national sport, mainly because you can play Handball in a small, indoor arena where the Gadiryan heat is shutout by modern miracle of AC. Handball, like football was introduced to Gadirya by Felixian immigrants coming from the French speaking regions of Felix in the 4th Era. As part of a sweeping effort to reform Gadirya from an isolationist, conservative nation he has decided to form a national Handball Federation to promote the sport locally and to send Gadirya's finest into the Handball World Cup. The first duty for the Royal Gadiryan Handball Federation was to submit a team and if this team does well in the Handball World Cup form a Handball league to strengthen the sport domestically. The following players are all semi-professionals and have careers in other professions and are coached by former World Cup winning goalkeeper from Felix, Ezio Dinapoli.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL HANDBALL TEAM

This is the fifth time that Abanhfleft will be participating in an international handball tournament. Handball is quite an obscure sport in the Democratic Republic, with no professional league established, and the handball department in the Commission on Sports and Games is occupied only by two men working out of a plastic table. But no matter about its obscurity within the country itself. Handball has got a few lifelong and die-hard practitioners scattered throughout the country, and the Commission has managed to get hold of all fourteen of them, along with a handball coach to lead them, and they are now about to embark on a journey to claim some honor for both their sport and their country once again.

HWC Draw made!

Last night, the draw for the Handball World Cup 18 took place in Drawkland. The "Gli attaccanti" were put on group B, alongside the hosts, Drawkland as well as Ethane and West-East Timor. A group with a lot of ambition but only 2 favourites to advance. This article is going to bring some brief analyzation about the teams on the group.

First the hosts, the most likely favourite to win the group, Abanhfleft, the fifth ranked team multiversally. After being cut in the quarter finals on the 15th and 16th editions of the competition by the Equestrian states and Ethane, Abanhfleft reached the 3rd place playoff last edition finishing 4th. They're a respected force, a force to be taken into serious consideration as they're favourites to win the tournament, it's almost impossible for them to go off in the group stages. 1/2 to qualify and 1/90 not to qualify are the common betting averages.

Secondy, another favourite to top the group, Ethane, runners up in the 16th version of the competition, they lost on their home turf to Costa de Ouro, favourites to win the competition in general, current runnerups. Ethane failed to qualify from the group stages on the 15th and 17th installments of the competition, but now they're lucky enough to be in a not so competitive group, giving them a lot more chances to qualify. On betting they stand at 1/4 to qualify first placed and 1/35 to not qualify.

Then, West-East Timor. They might've finished on the quarter finals on the 16th installment, but getting disqualified earlier at the round of 16 on the 17th installment means there's room for improvement for the West-East Timorian team. On betting they stand at 1/20 to qualify first and 1/12 not to qualify

Last but not least, the Gli attaccanti, one of the most offensive teams of the tournament, not expected to reach very far in this version, but with a little bit of luck they might qualify to the next round of the tournament. Betting stands on 1/29 to qualify first and 1/35 not to qualify.

First matchday, group B:
Abanhfleft vs Juvencus (Projected outcomes either 24-18 or 29-24)
Ethane vs West-East Timor (Projected outcomes 29-24 or 31-25)

Port of Serone, Serone

The big city of Serone, flourishing as usual, filled with 800 thousand people, a busy port, one of the busiest ports in all of Sonnel. Many trading ships bringing their goods from all around Sonnel. It was early in the morning, shift hour, there was a massive monument built near the Pietro Maestri plaza, dedicated to Pietro Maestri, the first democratically elected president, a national hero, turning the absolute monarchy into a constitutional one, reducing the powers of the monarch but increasing the power of the people. The monument's base was done and had 4 artistic impressions of each season, the autumn side had leaves falling off a tree, the winter one had snowstorms, the spring one flouringshing trees, which is why it's on the front side and the summer one had some sort of a farmland, with no clouds and a bigger sun than the autumn and spring ones. The statue of Maestri was going to be silver, with his buttons being gold.

Six workers were carrying the already prepared statue, one of them, called Mario, sighed and said "Oof, this statue's heavy, lads, are you sure we'll get it safe to the plaza, I don't want any sh** to happen to our national hero's statue, we'll get nationally hated by everybody." Another worker, being tired from carrying the statue already after a few steps said "We should carry this statue slow and steady, Mario. Also, watch your mouth, this is a work space, we don't have time for all your cusses and assumptions. THe statue will be safe and nothing will happen to it if we do what I said." Mario nodded and all the workers carried the statue to the truck, safe and sound.

The driver turned the truck on and started driving to the plaza, slowly, he was on the 28th of January avenue, about to turn to Pietro Maestri plaza street, both roads being quite busy this time of the day, but they had to place the statue quickly. Then, all of a sudden, a speeder caught the driver of the truck off guard, almost crashing with the speeder. The truck driver got off his truck and started using foul language to the speeder, the speeder had no idea he almost lost his life, he started cussing back. But then they stopped as the truck driver had to deliver the statue as soon as possible and there was no room for such pity fights to take place at that place and time. 5 minutes later he reached the plaza. Being greeted by the other workers, which carried the statue all the way to the hooker, then placing it on the base of the monument, as planned, all of that in a space of an hour and a half.

Silvio Ringhi court, Pomena

The capital, due to it being inland, by the Sulima river, wasn't as busy as Serone, although the shift hour was more intense due to the city being bigger and having more people, 1.2 million people to be exact. The Silvio Ringhi court, the only acknowledgable stadium for handball and basketball in the country, was busy with its 2 major teams' academies Pomena Rhinos and Pomena HC, each using seperate halves of the stadium to fulfill their tactics and purposes, each team, producing a number of 5 national team members each, are considered the biggest and greatest academies in the Empire.

Holidays had started early in Juvencus, since the country was going to take place in a major competition since the country was split into 8 nations, the current districts and and these played against each other in minor football tournaments, major for the "isolated" area, sportswise. Despite holidays had started early, it was only for work and school, sports academies could stay open for each to embrace its sport. Terzo Selmone, coach of the Pomena HC U16's, isn't quite impressed from the academy's progress, despite the team finishing second in their 14 team tournament, bringing home impressive results, as well as winning the U16's Handball cup, which is national. The academy's used to playing quite defensively with great counterattacks which bring most of the points, however, his players were only playing defensively on the training, despite his remarks on how they should improve on counterattacks, their counterattacks failed miserably bringing a boring and dull exhibition match in the academy.

"Improve on your counterattacks!?!?!" The coach shouted loudly, jumping in anger, he was quite young for a coach, around his 40's, he was excited to coach a team like this, but his dissapointment had overwhelmed him. His players weren't going very strong and fast on the counterattack, as expected and they failed again and again. The coach suddenly jumped in the court and said "Time out, we need to talk." all the players went on the benches and Terzo started talking, he was quite red, he had gotten red, as he had eaten a ghost pepper. "Come on lads!?!?!? You need to go fast and strong on your counterattacks, or else you'll fail, your defensive work is fine, but it's not enough. We're the greatest handball team in the country and you guys are the best U16's of your kind nationwide, do as I said, improve on your counterattacks."

Then they restarted the exhibition, suddnely, the team had improved, they had better counterattacks and ball position, chances were made instantly one after another, Terzo was satisfied, he calmed down. The game moved on smoothly, the two teams finished 18-17, quite the result for the many counterattacks, the players were tired, but they were also quite satisfied with their effort on the second part of the exhibition. They hoped they did that well in all of their matches and not just this one. They hoped for a brighter future in handball and sports in general.

SavojarSports.sj - inside reports from all Savojarna
The Journalist's Guide to Savojar Handball

HANDBALL IN SAVOJARNA

Handball is a very popular sport among young Savojars, and a lot of people, both men and women, play it in school. However, a lot of them are hockey players looking for an alternative to their sport in the summer, therefore many talented handballers get lost around 15 years of age because they focus on hockey. Savojarna has a professional handball league with 16 teams, most of them concentrated in Vestrholmen and Ejana. In Ejana, handball is seen as the regional sport and the island takes great pride in its team of EHK Storevik. However, due to the island's smallness and relative remoteness, most NT players come from Vestrholmen. In Sumanen and Russica Savojar, handball is less traditionally popular and has to fight for resources against rugby, floorball and volleyball. Nevertheless, the regions produce a few very noteworthy players, such as reigning MVP of the Savojar league, Savojagrad's left winger Pyotr Khabarov. Savojar teams are known for their unspectacular, pragmatic approach to handball, leading to a very tactically sound game dominated by the physical strength of most players sharpened through multiple seasons of ice hockey, handball, and formerly mining (even though that is not the case anymore since we professionalised the sport).

STYLE: -0.75

STARTING 7

GK #1 Johan Bromstö (27, Thorsborg)
LW #2 Pyotr Khabarov (21, Savojagrad)
LB #6 Asgeir Jonsson (30, Kjefla) - Captain
CF #10 Fridtjof Lindback (26, Jarnstad)
CB #4 Alexander Pedersen (22, Sjoedrhavn)
RB #11 Mikkel Nielsen (25, Sjoedrhavn)
RW #7 Ville Jokarinen (26, Virkaja)

SUBSTITUTES

GK #30 Petter Jacobsson (19, Thorsborg)
GK #12 Ari Östberg (23, Linder)
LW #8 Nils Jensen (18, Sandviken)
LB #5 Krister Bengtsson (26, Jarnstad)
LB #13 Eirik Baldersson (21, Storevik)
CF #9 Robin Ljungberg (24, Thorsborg)
CB #14 Mika Peltonen (27, Markka)
RB #16 Denis Bjarnsson (25, Jauska)
RW #3 Sasha Joravchuk (30, Pawlograd)

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Goalkeepers: The goalkeepers are relatively strong and should stop a fair share of shots. Bromstö is known for his great mental strength, while others may have more problems with this. Petter Jacobsson should definitely get some playtime, given that he has brilliant reflexes and is seen as the promise of future Savojar handball. Ari Östberg has led his team of Dynamo Sjoedrhavn in the playoff final in absence of usual goalkeeper Harald Nyborg, who is still injured and misses the World Cup, but is not likely to get to play unless there are injuries.

Wings: As mentioned, Khabarov is the MVP of the last season and has scored a lot of goals. He is known for a very strong shot and speed. Watch out for this young guy on the side. His replacement is the youngest player of the team, Nils Jensen. Jensen has scored the second-most goals for Sjoedrhavn in their journey to the final, beaten only by the team's star Mikkel Nielsen. He has shown a great ability to make good shots even when pressured heavily. On the right side, Ville Jokarinen will start. The Virkaja guy is very explosive and has a capability of breaking through any defense by brute force. His replacement, Sasha Joravchuk, is known for good scoring abilities. However, the 30 year old Joravchuk lacks the speed of his younger counterparts.

Centers: Center forwards Fridtjof Lindback and Robin Ljungberg can be used almost interchangeably. Both are very strong men and hard to get out of balance, and both of them have a tendency to shoot from situations in which a good shot is unexpected, scoring many sneaky goals like that. However, sometimes their attempts to score hinder the team's efficiency if they miss a better placed teammate. The backs Alexander Pedersen and Mika Peltonen are more different, with the younger starter Pedersen being more qualified in offense thanks to great overview. Peltonen, on the other side, is seen as the stronger defender, which will likely lead to some strategic substitutions shall the game require it.

Backs: Left back Asgeir Jonsson is easily the backbone of the team off the pitch. The captain is a natural leader, and a strong defender. This allows his counterpart in the starting 7, Mikkel Nielsen, to be more active and more offensive, which leads to many goals for Savojarna. His backups are Bengtsson and Baldersson, a pair of fast backs known for their overview and passing skills, which can be very valuable if additional offense is required. Mikkel Nielsen, as mentioned before, is especially dangerous in offense, even though he also knows how to stop an opponent. His strong shot has scared many goaltenders, and gave him a unexpected crown of best scorer in his team. Denis Bjarnsson, his replacement, will probably not play too much given Nielsen's importance, but could play an important support role in carrying a lead to the final whistle.

Defensive Specialists:
GK: Aleixo Plácido Magalhães
GK: Casimiro Abreu
FL: Joaquim Cristóvão Garcia

FC: Sonia Serafim

Offensive Specialists:
RW: Rafael Enéas de Santigo
LW: Marco Fernandes
RB: André Salomão Rodrigues
CB: Cristóvão Plácido Costa

Note that there is some flexibility between positions - Fonseca, Serafim, Garcia, and Silva, while nominally on the defensive end, have been known to score many goals for the Costenho teams. And Barros is perfectly capable of defending. Also, since the lineup can change so rapidly and there may not be opposing players of the same type (i.e. no right backcourt with a left backcourt), so many of the players are familiar with other positions as well.

Anticipated Lineups:
Starting Lineup: Magalhães - Garcia - Fonseca - Serafim - Costa - de Santigo - Barros
Defensive Lineup: Magalhães - Garcia - Silva - Fonseca - Serafim - Ferreira - Barros

The Felixian Handball Association (FHA) presents
The Felixian National Handball Team

Felix's arrival to the Handball World Cup scene was not as amazing as the Felixian Nationalists wanted but to be fair they just came back after hiatus. This edition the Felixian NT for Handball should be better prepared. It should be noted that Toño Crespo is going to retire as coach of the NT so this is going to be the last tournament with him. Expect Crespo to coach his team to get as far as they can in this tournament so he can end his career in Handball with a bang.

24. May 2016 - Sjoedrhavns Stadsstadion, Sjoedrhavn, Savojarna

"As tradition demands, I have the pleasure of welcoming you to Sjoedrhavns Stadsstadion, incidentally being also the home stadium of today's challenger Dynamo! They are facing off against title defendant ESK Storevik, the pride of Ejana, who has gone through this whole season almost unbeaten and not lost a postseason match yet. Three straight wins against PT Hovikkära Handball and their local rivals BHK Kjefla brought them here, and Dynamo's handball team is ready to take them on. Their way to the final was less impressive but still strong, beating Savojagrad in four and Jauska in five games. ESK is looking to defend their title, Dynamo wants to add this trophy to their impressive collection! They have many cups from football, hockey, curling and floorball, but no handball trophy in the Dynamo House yet. Can they change it tonight? And here are the teams! Entering in navy and white, the challenger, the nominal away team in its own stadium, Dynamo Sjoedrhavn! And to the right, in red, white and yellow, defending champion, number one of the regular season, Ejanska Sportsklub Storevik! Please also welcome the referee, from Pawlograd, Kirill Skuryanov! Now, players, referees and audience, please stand for the national anthem of Savojarna."

A giant Savojar flag raises on one side of the stadium as the International, serving as the Savojar anthem, booms from speakers. The army officers raising the flag as well as the Dynamo players - nominally all members of the police force - salute, while the rest of people put their hands on their hearts. Following the ceremony, the stadium breaks into wild cheers as the teams shake hands. They take up their places and the referee blows his whistle, starting the playoff final.

The game is fast and quickly, Sjoedrhavn pulls ahead. Mikkel Nielsen and Nils Jensen score three goals each in the first ten minutes, Söderberg adds two more. Then, the score being 11-6 at the time, LB Eirik Baldersson shows up at the front trying to break through. Nielsen attempts to stop him, but only manages to push him aside, out of balance. Baldersson's shot flies high over the crossbar as the tall and strong back falls to the ground and the referee blows his whistle.

"It's a penalty shot for ESK and Baldersson - and a penalty. Penalty shot for ESK Storevik, two minutes against Dynamo's Number 11, Mikkel Nielsen."

Savojarna holds its breath as Östberg moves as much as he is allowed to. Baldersson, a specialist for penalty shots, draws out his shot, seemingly standing in the air, before launching himself forward and shooting a hard shot to the goal. The ball hits Östberg's leg, but enters the goal just under the bar. ESK's players celebrate huddling together, having broken the scoring streak of Dynamo.

"GOAL for ESK Storevik, scored by penalty shot by Number 13, Eirik Baldersson! The time is 18:31, ESK Storevik 7, Dynamo Sjoedrhavn 11."

Fans work themselves up, flags being waved at both sides. Dynamo's navy blue and white prevails in the stadium as the team holds on to its lead towards the half time. But ESK's proud fans live up, the sport being the big regional pride of Ejana. The blue and red cross of Ejana flies over the south stand, where Storevik's large fan base installed themselves, along to the sound of drums, horns and chants. Down on the field, as time draws out, Haakon Jauslason breaks through and gets jumped by Jacobsson, but in the fall, manages to shoot the ball between Östberg's legs. He gets buried by his teammates as the scoreboard jumps to 14-15 for Sjoedrhavn. 15 seconds remain, and the home team wants to score again - but then they drop a ball. Jauslason passes it on quickly to Varyshnin, who can run towards the Dynamo goal on its own. He jumps off at the circle, faints a shot and delivers it low to the bottom-left corner as the referee blows his whistle.

"ANOTHER GOAL for ESK Storevik, scored by number 5, Oleg Varyshnin! The time is 29:57, ESK Storevik 15, Dynamo Sjoedrhavn 15. And this is the result we head into the break with. Dynamo Sjoedrhavn taking the lead early, but then losing ground to Storevik for a 15 all at the break. In first half, four goals have been scored by Nils Jensen, three each by Dynamo's Mikkel Nielsen and ESK's Haakon Jauslason. We invite you to enjoy the break and remember to be back on time for the second half in this final!"

The scoreboard shows ten minutes left, the score is 24-26 in favour of Dynamo again. Can ESK turn it around like in the first half? The team and the audience certainly believes so. Jensen has been absolutely dominating. The Dynamo winger runs up against the defense of Storevik, tbe big, tall defenders from Ejana. He is up against a giant, Jonsi Eythorsson. The defender is over 2 metres tall, over 100 kilos heavy, an impressive figure with his beard and manbun. Eythorsson reaches out, Jensen ducks - and smacks his head right into the defender's body. Falling onto his back, the attacker obviously seems hurt and gets substituted.

Seemingly shocked, Dynamo loses the ball. Jauslason counters quickly, passing it over to Varyshnin, who drops it back to Baldersson. Eirik Baldersson throws the ball high, to the left side. Getting away from his opponent, Rolfr Midborg jumps high, receives the ball in the air and smacks it into the near corner. Östberg is hopelessly late as the ESK team seems to come back into the game, Dynamo looking paralysed over the loss of its star.

"GOAL for ESK Storevik, scored by number 9, Rolfr Midborg! The time is 52:02, ESK Storevik 25, Dynamo Sjoedrhavn 26. There will be a short break to take care of Nils Jensen, who seems to be hurt."

Music comes on, Nils Jensen gets helped off the pitch by Storevik's goalkeeperJarkko Nauskanen, under the applause of the audience. The game resumes soon, with a shocked Dynamo side despite the efforts of its coach. From this moment, very little opposition comes from the side of Dynamo. ESK can score four goals in a row, setting the score to 28-26. By the time Nielsen returns, it is too late. As the whistle sounds, the score is at 32-29. ESK Storevik players collapse in a huddle of joy while their fans go crazy in the stands.

"WE HAVE A WINNER! The winner of the playoff final, the champion of Savojarna, from Storevik, Ejana... EJANSKA SPORT KLUB STOREVIK! With a final score of 32 to 29 against Dynamo Sjoedrhavn, they win the title for the second time in a row and for the twelfth time overall! Please welcome now, with the trophy of the Best Player in the Playoff Final, the Mayor of Sjoedrhavn, Mister Carl Pettersson! And crowned best player of the game is... from ESK Storevik, with the number 10, Haakon Jauslason!"

Under the applause of the audience and his teammates, Jauslason advances to the middle, high-fiving his teammates. Mr. Pettersson hands him a small trophy and a bag, shaking his hand. Next, the Dynamo team lines up for their honouring.

"Presenting the medals for the second placed team and the champion, President of the Savojarna Handball Federation, Mrs. Helle Kristensen. Please applaud the vice champion of Savojarna... from Sjoedrhavn, Vestrholm... DYNAMO SJOEDRHAVN!"

In a row, the players of Dynamo defilate before Mrs. Kristensen accepting their medals. Some of them smile lightly, realising their achievement. Some look disappointed. A few wipe away a tear. Behind them lines up a nervous, happy line of Storevik players, chatting to each other and playing with the fans. As each of the players get announced, audience applauds both sides about equally in a display of fairness and sportsmanship. Finally, a man in a suit arrives on stage, carrying a giant silver cup with a glistening red star on top of it.

"AND NOW. Please welcome, handing over the Cup... The People's Commissioner for Sports of Savojarna, Mister Dmitry Voroshnev! And please applaud for the Savojar Men's Handball Champion of 2016 - from Storevik, Ejana... ESK STOREVIK!"

Voroshnev hands the cup to the captain, Baldersson. Together with the team, he lifts it up under the cheer of their fans, who are now being let onto the pitch. Fans, players, coaches and staff all celebrate together, having defended the title in a hard game. Champagne flows, selfies are taken, people congratulated - and in the back of their heads, some players already have an even bigger adventure: The World Cup...

Functional Defensive References - Recovering the ball possession

In a few sports, defending can be as attractive as in handball. Several authors and books present the idea that every collective sport has three basic defensive actions: protect the target; Prevent further progression; And regain possession of the ball.
These three references or principles regulate the functioning of any defensive structure and any individual or collective action of the act of defending. Typically, in the teaching of handball, the look on the high-income hides aspects that transform the handball taught to beginners in a very stereotyped game, making these three defensive functions to be minimized to only one: protect the target.
This type of conduct transforms a game that has potentially pleasing ways of defending beginners in true martyrdom. It's boring to defend.
After all, protecting target, means waiting, staying there, disrupting the opponent's throw and nothing else. Is this the handball game you really see in an official game? The handball show is very much in its defense and it is far from being so passive.
In this way, some clues will be taught, so that regardless of the defensive system adopted (individual, zonal, mixed and so on), our students will be able to understand that defending can be much more than protecting the target. The idea here is to teach the pleasure implicit in trying to regain possession of the ball.
This is undoubtedly the purest form of defensive action of a child when he starts playing. After all, the ball is with her opponent and what she wants most is to have the ball with her.
To withdraw this impulse from the child is to transgress what is purest and right in handball: to score, you must have the ball, so this characteristic must be maintained and added to other forms of defending.
Regarding the possibilities of regaining possession of the ball, we must teach some rules of action, tactical means, functional references or any names that can be given to individual, group and collective actions, aimed at withdrawing the ball from the opponent's possession.
To actively regain possession of the ball, we must teach players and future technicians: press the opponent when he dribbles the ball and act on the dribble, trying to recover the ball when it returns from the contact made with the ground. It's the famous, steal the ball. Act on pass lines, closing them only at the moment a pass is made. This is called interception of passes, by means of an anticipatory action. We can also teach how to act on the pass line of opponents being marked by other teammates. For, when the passer sees that a colleague of his disassociates from his direct marker, he may choose to pass the ball. But if a player who is not defending this unmarked striker realizes this, he can abandon his marker and close the pass line, surprising the opponent with a ball. This is called an attack on the odd.
In order to recover passively (that is, to provide an opponent's error), we must also teach: whenever the opponent with the ball is looking for a free teammate to pass, it may be disturbing who has the ball, approaching the line Pass and return the defensive action outside the pass line doing this continuously, therefore, whoever is with the ball will be insecure to pass at the right time, being able to walk, miss the pass, double dribble and so on. To this we call dissuasion, or deterrence. When approaching an opponent to intercept his dribble, the chance of him holding the ball is too great. That keeps him from dribbling her again. So if he holds the ball, moving away from it and closing pass lines is a good option. We call this approach and retreat, or just float.
There are five simple ways to defend, leaving aside the idea of exclusive protection of the target, which will give your students a lot of desire to defend, making this action exciting and nothing conservative. When this is learned in initiation, it takes for the whole sporting life.

Râu, Turlă Administrative Region, December 2nd, 2016

The state of Turlă, massive plains and a river are dominating the landscape of the administrative region inside Juvencus. Despite the massive plains, 10 million people, 26% of the population of the Empire live in this area, making it the most densely populated part of the nation. Also including the 3rd, 4th and 5th largest cities of the empire. Râu, Domnii and Purcea. Râu is the biggest out of all these 3, the 3rd biggest city of the empire, with 750,000 people. A bustling city, a very busy one, being the capital of the administrative region of Turlă, it holds the region's democratic parliament and most major structures to keep the area running, but it's also holding some very important Juven offices. Juvencus' TeleNat Headquarters are located there, the most important television and telephone services in the entire nation with 4 million subscribers, far ahead out of every competition.

The bustling city was experiencing a very calm afternoon, after a very busy and working day. The river flowing through the city centre had a lot of tourists, they were busy photographing, either the river, or the buildings around it that were rocketing up into the sky. The locals were enjoying some free time outside. Despite all the calm atmosphere, Cezar Preunescu, a footballer of a local team was mad at his teammates, their team was losing 2-0 in the first half, he was the striker, he expected his teammates to perform better on the pitch. "Guys, we should play better, we're losing 2-0" said Preunescu. Most players didn't pay attention to what he said, but the CAM and LM named Matei Vãduva and Nelu Ionescu respectively did. Preunescu said "We need to play with more passes. In the first half, despite of them having more possession, they found a hard time getting it from us, we were giving the ball to them too easily. Now our passes have to be short, not long, unless we're far on the offense."

The second half started. Matei and Nelu were dribbling past the defenders with ease, passing the ball to each other, they were predictable, but way too fast for the defenders to reach them. "Give it to me, Nelu" said Cezar, Nelu did a rabona pass to Cezar, the latter picked up the ball and swiftly turned around, the defender stood still, like a mannequin, confused by how Cezar managed to pull a dribble like this. Cezar was 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper, all he did was a swift chip of the ball and the ball went in, making it 2-1. Instantly, Matei stole the ball from the opposition and passed it to Nelu, Nelu shot a lightning bolt to the top corner, making it 2-2 in the space of 3 minutes. The opposition went on to strike instantly, exchanging long balls from side to side, the defence was quite confused and the opposition's striker shot the ball just a bit wide. The LB passed it to Nelu, he passed it to Matei and Matei quickly crossed it in for Cezar, Cezar sent it on the post and everything froze just for a second, the ball didn't seem to get in but in the last sec Cezar did a heroic run and sent the ball in. The score was now 2-3.

With the score now on their side, the rest of the team relaxed, but Nelu, Cezar and Matei kept passing to one another veyr fast, confusing the opposition's defence once more, Cezar sent the ball wide twice while Nelu shot another lightning bolt but this time it hit the left post and the defenders cleared it out. The RB went to do the throw in, he gaver it to the RM, the RM gave it to Matei, Matei rouletted through the defence and passed it to Cezar and he shot the ball in, in a very relaxed fashion, making the score 2-4. These 4 goals were scored in a space of 15 minutes. Everybody was quite impressed by their effort, as if they had magically turned professional. They were indeed very good players. 20 minutes later, Matei sealed the winning effort of his team with a finesse shot from 25 meters away from the box.

Izlazurile, Turlă Administrative Region, December 9th 2016

A week after their impressive 2-5 winning effort. These 3 players were going to play against another local team in the suburbs of their city. This time it was early at night, Cezar, Matei and Nelu were still on fire, they were trained very well. This time they'd follow their orders exactly. "Keep it short and fast, they're fast counterattackers, we must keep an aye on them" Indeed, after the first 5 minutes, Nelu misses a shot after the goalkeeper dives impressively to save his shot, instantly the opposition's counterattacking and they score a quick goal. The score was 1-0. Quite impressivelt as well, Matei doesn't give up, after he's given the ball by Cezar he's making a quick run through the defence and shoots it on the lower right corner of the goal, making it 1-1. The game was quite suspenseful from the very beginning, the score stayhed that way for the remainder of the 1st half, despite the chances made by Cezar and Nelu, the opposition's keeper kept strong.

The second half started, Nelu and Matei were again, exchanging the ball. Nelu crossed it to Cezar and he headed the ball in with an extre force, while the keeper couldn't do much to save the ball. Cezar's goal made the score 1-2. Again, they stole the ball from the opposition and Nelu, being the skillfull LM he is steals the ball and dribbled through the side of the defence, then got inside of the box and on a 1 on 1 effort with the keeper he sent it in from a very tight spot with his strong left leg, making the score 1-3. The opposition went on to attack after the 3rd goal, they failed. Nelu shot a rocket from 30 meters sending it in, again. Making the score 1-4. Which was the final result of the game. In the rest of the game, him, Matei and Cezar would keep "sieging" the opposing corner, without any chances going on target, since they were all either wide, or taken out by the opposing defenders. After the match, the trio was praised by the coach and the crowd, given a massive applaud. They were the future of the region's footballers and their careers were expected to take off quite soon, if they kept their very fast paced play.

SavojarSports.sj - inside reports from all Savojarna
Handball: Savojarna in "Final" for KO Round

Metropolon, DRK - After the crippling loss Savojarna faced in its first ever appearance on the international sporting stage, when the team was no match for handball world champion Red Blackiland, the team bounced back with a narrow win over San Jose Guayabal. The final match against Schutzenphalia and West Ruhnkuhntuhnland will be a tough match, but has every chance to reach the partial octofinals by beating the Schutzenphalia team. A draw, however, will certainly not be enough and will see the favourite scraping through on goal difference. Schutzenphalia's squad has been somewhat difficult to assess. The team opened the tournament with a rather clear victory over San Jose Guayabal by eight points, but then dropped nine points to Red Blackiland, scoring even less points than Savojarna in their devastating 32-21 loss. The mood in the team, according to captain Asgeir Jonsson, is good and looking forward opimistically, willing to beat Schutzenphalia and West Ruhnkuhntuhnland tomorrow. But can the team do so

The big question after the game versus Red Blackiland was whether the defense of the Savojars, expected to be their strength, collapsed under the pressure of the world champions or if it was not as strong as expected in the first place. Savojarna gave the answer on the field yesterday, scoring barely more points than against Red Blackiland, but cutting down the number of goals conceded. The Guayabalense team failed to push through the tough, strong Savojar defense, which makes us optimistic for the final game. As in the first game, Savojarna managed to dominate the game in the 1 versus 1 defensively, but with a team that does not manage to counter this defense by strong, swift passing like Red Blackiland did, they could apply their fast counter-attacks and strong physical defense. San Jose Guayabal's forwards ended up stuck in the big, heavy defenders of Savojarna. Especially standing out was Alexander Pedersen, taking San Jose Guayabal's center completely out of the game and launching several counters, including the eventual game-winner by Pyotr Khabarov.

In the offense, the aforementioned Khabarov scored "only" three goals, but very important ones. The man from Savojagrad opened the score for his team, scored the 8-7 that was the first time in the match that Savojarna took the lead, and then finished by scoring the 22-21 that turned out to be the game winner. Fridtjof Lindback scored four goals, as did his replacement Robin Ljungberg. The two centre-forwards took advantage of their physical advantage over the Guayabalense defense and got to multiple very good chances. Equally shining was the star of the team, right back Nielsen. Nielsen kept being a problem for San Jose Guayabal by running into their defense and jumping over his opponent, using his explosive play to get chances and goals. The Guayabalense team was forced to push forwards harder after the break, with Savojarna ahead by 14-11 right after half time. That left openings for the fast attacks of Jokarinen and substitute left winger Nils Jensen. However, the Guayabalense could take advantage by the slightly overly aggressive defense and scored goals with multiple penalty shots, tying up the game again at 17-17.

In the final minutes, the Savojar team managed to shut out most of the efforts of San Jose Guayabal, costing them a lot of power and stamina. This was used by the Savojarna attackers to counter their attacks brutally, leading to multiple opportunities of two-on-one or three-or-two. Most of these ended up being goals for Savojarna, leading to the eventual victory of the team. The attempt to score of San Jose Guayabal was somewhat effective in keeping the game close, but they could not manage to interrupt the trade of goals that had ensued. At the point of 22-21, finally, an attack was intercepted and countered, ending in the 23-21 final goal by Sasha Joravchuk. This gave Savojarna the possibility of this final match awaiting them tomorrow.

In this game, Savojarna will face a very strong team that will be harder to shut out than San Jose Guayabal, but not a team impossible to beat. Comparing them to Red Blackiland, their playstyle will likely fit the Savojar style better than the offensive, fast movements of Red Blackiland. Therefore this team should be more possible to be beaten than the world champion, but the team is sure that the match will not be easy to win. We agree with this assessment of Schutzenphalia and West Ruhnkuhntuhnland, but we also think it is important not to go into the game being completely scared and stunned by the opponent's rank. Support Savojarna tomorrow at 21:30 Sjoedrhavn's time on STV2!

Lowes Lighthouse - Part 3 | Part 2 | Part 1

The ship picked up the reply to the sos call. They knew that help was coming. Yet the captain knew that it would be too late, as they were so close to the rocks now, within a wave or twos distance. Too late for most of the ship. He could imagine the headlines of the newspapers. 'Ship crashes into rocks by Lowes Lighthouse - reasons unknown'.

'HOLD ON!' the officer shouted at him, barely audible at the sound of the waves. The officer grabbed him by the hand, placing it on the handrails, bracing for impact.

Crash! The sound of the ship smashing into rocks could be heard, likely for a fair distance, as the metal broke apart, water filling the gap. It was then pulled away from the rocks, the tide pulling it out again before the next gigantic wave smashed it into the rocks.

'Captain!' the officer shouted over the waves. 'How are we going to get off the sinking ship with the waves doing this?!' He grabbed onto the handrail as they were yet again smashed into the rocks.

'We're not.' The captain replied, calmer than his officer. He needed to be, for the sake of the crew and everyone else on board. 'This wave will ground us on the rocks.' The officer looked out the window towards the back of the ship where the captain was looking. He then grabbed onto the handrail tightly, like the captain did, as a large wave crashed over the back of the ship, sending it flying on to the rocks. A loud scrape could be heard as the ships bottom hit the bottom of the rocks and was pushed up. The captain and the officer flew to the deck and opened a hatch to the lower floors, pulling people up through the opening. The sloshing of water could be heard in the lower parts of the ship - flooded out with sea water.

'Quick!' the captain barked. 'Over the side. Down the ladder. We have little time!' he shouted, urgently hurrying them over the side one-by-one, cautiously watching the sea behind him for any larger waves. His passengers were screaming and trembling as they descended the ladder down the side of the ship. They rushed up to a higher point on the rocks as soon as they reached the ground to avoid any rogue waves that may come crashing over the rocks.

'Sarah! Jacob! Quick!' the captain shouted with urgency, looking over his shoulder behind him. He could see the way the sea was moving - what it was doing - and knew, just knew, that a larger rogue wave would hit the ship. However, over the wind and the waves, the captain could not be heard. Nothing except for the howling wind and the roaring waves could be heard.

The wave hit the ship. The captain and the 2 passengers left on the deck with him grabbed onto the handrail tightly and pushed themselves to the floor as the wave crashed over the ship, soaking them all. Jacob managed to jump ashore and scramble to the higher rocks, pulled up by the fellow members of the ship to safety. Yet Sarah could not cling on. As the ship was pulled back into the churning waters, she lost grip of the rope ladder and fell in, surrounded by foaming white horses. As the next wave came, she was smashed into the rocks, followed by the ship smashing into the rocks in the same position. Blood soaked the waters. Sarah could not be seen, except for a hat she was wearing. Jacob screamed, falling to his knees on the rocks. Sarah, dead.

Mattijana Win Biggest Match To Date

Mattijana took a brilliant win against The United States of Devonta in a gruelling encounter at the Handball World Cup in Drawkland.
The Devontans, ranked 12th in the world, 15 places above Mattijana, were favourites to win following a relatively straightforward win against Nagore in their first match, accompanied by a dissapointing performance in Mattijana's first match defeat to Qasden (Kazdan), yet it soon became apparent that they were in for a tough fight as Mattijana pinged the ball around nicely early on, before opening the scoring when Daniella Tadič wriggled through, collected a ball over the top and found the gap at the near post before she could land inside the box.

That moment opened up the game, with a flurry of goals from both sides keeping things fairly even at the first quarter break, yet a brilliant low save from Jelena Handanovič allowed Mattijana to go two goals clear for the first time at 10-12.
The end-to-end scoring continued after that as the tension heightened, with goals becoming a neccessity. Surprisingly, it was once again Devonta that cracked first with one of their forwards missing a fairly straightforward chance wide of the post under some heavy defensive pressure.

3 goals up, Mattijana began to run down the clock, playing short passes amongst themselves as the clock ticked down, but they were almost caught out as an interception was made, yet Handanovič saved her team with a brilliant low save 1-on-1.

Mattijana scored once more, a hard finish into the top corner from Tadič, before the final whistle went.

The win makes Mattijanan favourites to progress as group runners-up. They face bottom side Nagore on the final day of group stage action, whilst Devonta must take on Qasden, knowing they must better the result of the Mattijanans if they are to progress, a feat that seems unlikely given the Van's good form so far.
All will be revealed later today.
