WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC 38: WHERE THE PAST BECOMES THE PRESENT

OFFICIAL NEWMANISTAN HOST BID

Welcome to the official bid to host World Baseball Classic 38 in Newmanistan. We’re probably not the nation that you were expecting to host the next classic when Schiltzberg won the 37th Classic, for the record-tying fourth time. Well, we would like to be that host, though I realize that can come with some concerns for Council members. While I have been welcomed back with open arms by some, I want to make sure that every Council member is ok with the thought of me hosting the competition, regardless of whether or not you actually vote for my bid or any other potential bid that might come about. Here are some concerns I can foresee people having, and my responses to them.

You have been gone a long time, and haven’t even roleplayed a competition since you refounded your nation. Why should I vote for you?

Well, technically, I will begin roleplaying in the World Bowl 31 Thread which figures to start a little bit before this one. While it is correct that I have not taken part in a WBC since #19, I invite anyone with this concern to take a look at the frequency in which I did RP in the past. The history of my nation in past WBC’s will provide a unique chance for roleplaying opportunities that may not otherwise exist.

You’re not gonna give up in the middle and CTE on us and cause us a lot of aggravation, are you?

The World Baseball Classic was always my favorite competition when I actively participated within NS Sports. I played a large role in the drafting of the WBC Constitution (original version and early revised ones), and in the formation of the WBC Council. I would never do anything to put this competition in harm’s way.

Ok, so I guess I am ok with all that. But you don’t know my nation. You don’t know my RP’ing style, or my history, or anything like that. Why should I vote for you based on that?

Consider this a positive, and not a negative. Everyone has the opportunity to showcase their nations to me, tell me about its history, its team, its background or any other details to a fresh set of eyes that will be reading about them. It provides a great opportunity for RP on an OOC basis, and IC, the competition returning to a once great but long dormant nation should provide inspiration for those days of writer’s block.

On an IC basis, will the nation be safe for my fans and the teams?

Yes. World Bowl 31 will be beginning prior to this tournament and early RP’s in that thread will detail the Empire returning to its normal conditions and lifestyles that were in place when we last hosted in WBC 19.

The Group Stages are longer now. We do series now. You ok with that?

If you only knew.
Back when I was actively participating, I often campaigned for the WBC to go the way of the series, the longer group stage, and one series scorinated per matchday. It was seeing this actually that convinced me that I would give returning to the WBC a shot with the main nation instead of participating with a puppet. It was a long time coming for the tournament to finally go in that direction!

Where is the pretty host bid logo?

I’ve never been one to create logos! If someone wants to make one, I can upload it. Let’s move on to the important stuff now.

I) Scorination
The current version of xkoranate, 0.3.3, with the Saintland NSFS formula.

II) RP Bonus
Daily RP bonus potential will be generous, and cumulative until the end of the group stage. RP bonus will be cut in half prior to the beginning of the playoffs. A roster bonus will also be provided, and whatever is earned with it will not be amount subject to the cutting in half of RP bonus. I most definitely prefer quality over quantity. Quality, in my mind, represents using all information that is available to you. For example, if providing a game recap as a RP, don’t say “the Newbiestan closer came in for the 9th and blew the lead” if Newbiestan provided a roster and named who their closer is on that roster.

III) Format
The number of groups and teams per group will be sensible based on the number of signups, such as:
36: 6 groups of 6
40: 8 groups of 5
42: 6 groups of 7
48: 8 groups of 6

48 is a nice workable number to shoot for, but I’ll make 54, 56, 60, or 64 work as well.

I will be using the three game series format (and scorinating one series per day). Thanks again, WBC Council for finally going this route with this tournament!

Playoffs:
16-teams will make the playoffs. How we arrive at the 16 teams will depend on the number of groups. If there are 6 groups, then I will take the top 2 teams per group automatically; and then the best four teams otherwise after that. If there are five groups, the same idea applies, but there would be six "wild cards".

Group winners will be seeded 1-6 regardless of their actual record (Reason is to give incentive to win the group even if a team is safely in second). Seeds 7-16 will be based on their actual records. There will be NO re-seeding as the tournament progresses. Every series, except for the championship series, will be a best-of-three. The championship series will be a best-of-seven.

IV) Tiebreakers
1) H2H Record
2) Overall Run Differential
3) Overall Run Differential/9 (essentially this eliminates runs scored or given up in extra innings)
4) Tiebreaker game
I do not use H2H run differential as a tiebreaker on this logic:
Team A and B split the series 1-1. Team A won the first game at home, 5-4, and never hit in the bottom of the ninth. Team B won the second game, 5-3, at home, thanks to a three run HR in the bottom of the ninth. On this, Team B wins this tiebreaker. But is it fair, since B had a 9th inning in their win when A did not in their win? In my opinion, it is not, so I do not use this tiebreaker. While the same thing can happen with Overall Run Differential, I feel that is different as the teams were not against each other, head to head.

Note: If a tie between A, B, C, and D must be broken; and A wins the tiebreaker at stage 3 and B, C, D are still tied, then the new tie between B, C, D is broken by reverting back to stage 1, H2H record between the three of them.

V) Experience
View my signature for the tournaments that I have hosted. Sure, many of you weren’t around for a lot of them, but you should know what it takes to host those tournaments, even if lower edition numbers then you are used too!

Please feel free to ask questions!

There are spaces available if you wish to sign up. Please note that a host bid is unlikely to succeed due to your unknown NS Sports status, unless you can present a really compelling case. You would be best served to sign up and participate in a few events before attempting to host a major tournament like the WBC.

Also, please refrain from advertising your region (or anything) on this thread.

Well, while it's pretty interesting to see a bid from ya, Janskisa, may I ask a few questions. Firstly, what are your views on tiebreakers and RP bonuses in the tourney? You haven't stated anything about what would happen in the event two or more teams tie in their group. Secondly, what would be your format style should the event have less sign ups? Lastly (for now, I guess), is the group stage a single round robin or double or what? If it's single, then why did you opt to just play 4 group stage games instead of several games like last time in Fren and Ilyseum?

Last question goes to Newmanistan, too. Are your formats single RR or double or what? Single RR group stages just go by too quickly. This is baseball, bros, it's gotta be a bit long and challenging (my opinion at least). Cheers!

Double, and I agree with your assessment about the longer format. The WBC is the one competition where a longer group stage is definitely for the better.

For Janskisa: At least spell my name right if you're going to use it in your bid. Enthusiasm to host is a great thing, but hosting is so much more then listing stadiums and naming a scorinator. We don't run competitions here to "get them over with quickly". We run competitions for the enjoyment of RP'ing them. I suggest getting a little experience roleplaying first.

@Janskisa - Why should voters trust your ability to grade RPs (one of the main responsibilities of a host) when you've never done so before?

I'm in agreement with above statements - you definitely have the enthusiasm to succeed as a participant, but you need some experience RPing before you can host.

Not sure if you saw, Nova, but Janskisa Kasja's bid is invalid because it was Krisville trying to sneak back.
