NationStates College Football Season 15

Image

It's that time of year... the tuba's rumbles reverberate through the monolithic campus stadia, each packed with generations of alumni returning to partake in the beloved traditions of their alma mater. The aromas of popcorn and beer sift out through the bleachers. The bright lights shine down on armored teams battling under the night sky, school bragging rights and a grueling summer of work on the line. Ah, yes. It's college football season. Glory, Drama, Pride.

That's right, the fifteenth edition of NationStates College Football is upon us. Here you will post your team's roster and all in-character roleplays. Any out-of-character questions should be directed towards the discussion thread or telegram.
Post-NSCF 14 Rankings here.

...

With numbers from NSCF 14 remaining static at thirty teams, the same format will be used. New and returning players alike are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the NSCF procedure here. Each of the five conferences conference has six teams. The regular season will be double round-robin, for a total of 10 games. Games will be scorinated three times a week: on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Scores will be posted in this thread at a time determined by each conference's designated scorer.

After all ten conference games, there will be a "Non-Conference Week", with each team playing up to three games against opposition from other conferences. These games will not count toward conference championships, but WILL affect playoff seedings. All Non-Conference games must be arranged by the teams playing them and confirmed by both in the discussion thread.

The playoff format this season includes eight teams for a three-round, single-elimination tournament. All 5 conference champions, the next best team by OSPI, and two selected at-large by the NSCF committee. Seeds for the playoffs will be determined purely by OSPI, and the higher seeds will have home advantage until the Final, which will take place at a neutral venue (host bids can be posted ICly in this thread) to be voted on by the NSCF Committee.

In addition to the playoffs, there also a few consolation bowl games for teams that do not reach the postseason. If your nation proposes a bowl game to host, you are responsible for inviting the teams yourself. The Pioneer Bowl is a traditional game for the two best performing newcomer teams not in the playoffs. After that, NSCF will not recognize any bowl game involving a team with an OSPI below 0.450.

The Cosumarite Courier PIONEER BOWL
to be played at Leviathan Arena in Kaldukosic, Kaldukosic Fief, Cosumar
Contested by: Top two newcomer teams not in the playoffs.

The LEI BOWL
to be played at Plumeria Garden, Kalalau
Contested by: Best offensive team and best defensive team not in the playoffs or Pioneer Bowl

The Crispy Butter Toilet Paper SNAKESKIN WARS MEMORIAL BOWL
to be played at Blue Horse Coliseum, Soccater, Frenline Delpha
Contested by: Bowl-eligible teams with the lowest two OSPIs

The Drawk Corps DRAWK BOWL
to be played at Corps Core Stadium, Drawk City, Drawkland
Contested by: Best teams from Mineral and Celestia not in the playoffs or an above bowl

All positions are listed in order as the official depth chart from the South Seas University football program web page.
Players most likely to make big plays are noted with an asterisk (*)

Honu Season bullet points:
  • With the calamitous Hurricane Kainoa devastating much of the islands--and after losing numerous key playmakers on both sides of the ball enterning NSCF 14, the South Seas football program needed the support of its fans to be successful in the most recent season. Though this team has far less positional turnover entering NSCF 15, the continued destruction of Costa Aluria will create ongoing problems for the football team.
  • This devastation is now the inspiration for the new look Honu, who enter NSCF with added fuel that football is not everything in life. As this nation looks to rebuild its infrastructure, the team will play a crucial role in rebuilding the culture of these islands. As such, the Honu have changed their name from South Seas University to Harbor College [of South Seas University], a move which symbolizes the incredible efforts of South Seas Islanders in joining together on the rebuilding of the culturally significant Mosaic Harbor. In a show of similar unity, Costa Aluria voted to rename the islands “Kalalau” late last season as the rebuilding efforts sought to refocus on traditional island identity. It is under these modified names that the Honu will continue to play and to connect to South Seas heritage.

    Honu Offensive bullet points:
    • With all of the turnover that happened after NSCF 13, this Honu team surprised many as they made it back to the NSCF championship game for NSCF 14. For the 15th installment of football at Nationstates highest level, this team will look to build even further cohesion and look to be a contender once again, even in the heavily contested Horizon Conference. Despite having one of the highest positional turnover rates entering NSCF 14, this Honu team entering NSCF 15 is one of the most stable throughout the standings in the NSCF, with only seven total players who are new to the roster.
    • Offensively, the Honu run a zone read spread offense which takes advantage of creating space for speedy players to make plays. Under NSCF, Goose Carneghy proved he run under a different system, though the added experience on both sides of the ball should see the Honu return to the mile-a-minute spread tempo that has plagued the NSCF as of late
    • Though Augustine Cobbler showed himself capable as a signal caller, it remains to be seen whether he can successfully hold the starting position. A true pocket passer, Cobbler should have a longer leash than might have been expected last season thanks to his successful appearance in the NSCF 14 championship game. Still, the more athletic Cyril Peregrine is more in the mold of a traditional Carneghy designed offense. Sophomore Rueben Pennyante may be the best of the bunch, but will likely need to bide his time before showing his run/pass skills.
    • With Jonas Talbot now graduated, Ezekiel Pentecost is in prime position to take over the lion’s share of this backfield, both in the read option run game and in short passing routes. Penecost may be spelled some by space back Jaelen Bush, but many expect bruiser Brigham Cooke to wrest away more change of pace duties. Cooke is a sleeper as the thunder portion of this team’s backfield, and may rip off some long runs late in the game against tired defenses. Up and comer Nigel Cay, a big-bodied, one cut and get downhill runner, has likely already surpassed Rogelio Encarnacion on the depth chart; Encarnacion simply has too awkward of combination of body type and running style to be easily slotted into offesnsive schemes.
    • Asa Tasman will take over as the de facto #1 WR for the Honu, and he’s got all of the physical traits to be special in this league and beyond. Big, fast, good hands--Tasman was more than a bit limited with the offensive changes that happened between NSCF 13 and 14. With greater cohesion now in the Honu ranks, Tasman may go off, and could easily lead the NSCF in receiving yards this season. The undersized track and field specialist Laird Prefontaine will take over as the receiver opposite Tasman, looking to burn the top off of the field as the clear deep ball specialist. Prefontaine will likely hit a number of homeruns in open space, either by running past the defense on the long ball or by weaving through the defense on short screens. Prefontaine’s presence should open up increased opportunities for Mojave Crenshaw or Felix Scribe in the middle of the field. Outside of Tasman, however, the Honu wide receivers project once again as a rather pedestrian group.
    • Also in the middle of the field, Phineas Clocktower will likely be uncoverable as the starting TE. Gifted with substantial measurables and athleticism, Clocktower is likely to fit the mold of Honu alum Levi Savage, who at times proved to be a menace to opposing defenses. Clocktower’s development is of key importance to the future of the Honu football program, and he will likely record a number of first downs, touchdowns, and other big plays..
    • QB Cobbler had his work cut out for him coming into NSCF 14, with every single starter moving on since NSCF 13. Cobbler will get more of the same heading into NSCF 15, with Goose Carneghy shifting the line even more. Unlike last year, we feel much more confident that the current group will be able to gel quickly, especially as the Honu field essentially 6 starters for the line, with one at each position and swiss army style lineman Adriel Kana’i.
    • The offense will undoubtedly seek to move the chains utilizing the zone read, with runs early and often. To keep the defense on their toes, the zone read will open up plays in the short screen game with wide receiver bubble screens, running back short passes, and tight end screens mixed in. Look out for the electric runningbacks though, because if you lose them in coverage they will swing out on a seam route and gash you for thirty yards. Just when the defense has settled in to the short game, quarterback Augustine Cobbler will go for the jugular with a long pass to any number of receivers.
    • Coach Carneghy has been known to be quite aggressive, routinely electing to go for fourth down plays over punting and even throwing in the occasional two point conversion after touchdowns.
    • Key losses: RB Jonas Talbot, WR Estancio Abasacal, TE Salvador Sandoval, OL Victor Reyes, OL Tua Halemaumau,
    • Key additions:RB: Nigel Cay, WR John Smith V, TE Haleakala Silversword, OL Esau Kilauea, OL Brames Foulweather

    Honu Defensive bullet points:
    • Defensive Coordinator Samson Fisafua has proven adept at putting together quality units, and had gone mostly under the radar until the offensive scheme of NSCF 14 placed more emphasis on the defensive unit. Fisafua would likely be on a short list of current coordinators who would deserve a long look should any NSCF team lose a coach in the offseason. It remains to be seen how Fisafua’s defensive unit will respond to what is likely a return to the up-tempo offensive scheme employed by Goose Carnaghy.
    • The Honu play a hybrid 3-5-3/3-3-5 defense, again focused on getting speedy players to the ball in a hurry. The hybrid nature of the defense means the Honu will substitute liberally on defense, adding to the confusion of the defensive schemes while keeping players fresh.
    • Defensive Coordinator Samson Fisafua will look to build on the defensive wrinkles introduced last year, and while the heart of this unit is the speedy, bend but don’t break philosophy, Fisafua has done his best to increase the size and physical strength of the unit as well. In addition to a bulked up line and backs, Fisafua will look to employ zone blitzes to cause confusion and get unblocked linebackers and defensive ends to the quarterback or ball carrier.
    • While entering NSCF 14 saw the Honu defense hemorrhage quality playmakers, entering NSCF 15 the Honu remain mostly intact. The biggest loss cannot be understated, as the Honu lose DE/NT Roosevelt Calderon, who was one of the leagues premier defensive playmakers. There is simply no way to fully replace the productivity that Calderon vacates, but Adawale Jesumbo and Koa Anuenue should fill in for the most part. Fisafua should get credit here as well, as the DE unit should fill in the gaps without missing too much of a beat.
    • No doubt the heart of any Fisafua led defense is the unit at the front and center. Behemoth NT Laurent Delormier put on 45 pounds prior to NSCF 14, and is an even stouter barrier in the middle of the field. The added girth should see Aruba Castille spell Delormier more frequently this season. In the middle of the field, the linebacking corps is a particular strength, with a number of up and coming players muddying the waters of what otherwise could have been a very clear picture on a number of other teams. Again, Fisafua has shown his prowess in recruiting as most of these linebackers could start on other NSCF teams.
    • With the hybrid defensive scheme that the Honu are set to employ, there has been no official designation from the official website on players in the defensive backfield. Instead, defensive backs will be asked to play in a myriad of roles.
    • Junior Lyman Orchards, who entered the South Seas program with a multitude of hype, will get plenty of chances to live up to his lofty recruitment at DB, and may get a chance to prove that he can be the next true shutdown corner for Honu. The lengthy Elzavon Sandbar has proven time and again why, even with his size, he was not recruited instead as WR. It would not be too surprising if Sandbar leads the team in broken up passes without a single interception. Otherwise, as has been the traditional weakness of Fisafua led defenses, the defensive secondary lists a number of pedestrian talents, headlined perhaps by diva Jenkins Leroy, who would be a star if he could live up to just ¼ of his personality. James Condor hopes to provide a spark to the defensive secondary, and he may have a number of interceptions this year as he is prone to jump routes; this expectation should be tempered, however, with expectations that Condor will also give up a number of big plays on incorrect reads.
    • The entire defense is built on speed, and quick substitutions to all positions project to keep the defensive unit fresh in all levels. Defensive stops will hinge on each player proving to play smartly as the amount of substitutions will force each defensive player to play to their fullest cerebral potential.
    • Key losses: DE/NT Roosevelt Calderon, DB Saul Everett
    • Key additions: DE Solomon Copperplate, DB James Condor

While the Konigsberg Fusiliers are the primary football powerhouse in Valorem, thanks to their relentless passing-based offense, this is their first year competing outside Valorem's borders. The team is excited to get going with the first week of the season, and stellar performances are expected from true freshman Heinrich Norbert, starting for the Fusiliers at wide receiver, and from two-year veteran quarterback Daniel Prescott. In addition, Fusilier fans are ecstatic that starting seniors Sinclair Leibniz (DL) and Justin Warren (SS) have decided to return for their final year rather than entering the draft.
After last year's Valorian National Championship, coach Otto Sheinfeld was given a substantial raise by the University of Konigsberg - time will tell if this was a wise investment. In addition, offensive coordinator Herbert Eberhardt has been drafting new plays for the Fusiliers during the offseason that the players have been wanting to try out.
Max Brandt is the Fusiliers' new Special Teams coach, replacing Jed Hudnall after the nearly disastrous blocked punt in the third quarter of the 2015 Valorian National Championship.
Gottlieb Laberenz is the Fusiliers' defensive coordinator, having moved from the Valorem City Institute of Technology's head coach position two years ago. While he is still adjusting to the defensive style of the Fusiliers, he made several genius calls in last year's championship game that helped the team recover from Hudnall's Farewell.

Ramusok Capital University (RCU) Dragons

Location: Ramusok, Ramusok Fief, Cosumar

School Size: 54,500 undergraduates

NSCF Championships: 1 (NSCF 10), Conference Titles: 3 (NSCF 2, 3, 11)

Team History and Outlook: RCU was one of the original NSCF 1 schools and has participated in all fifteen editions of the event, making it one of the most storied programs in NSCF history. Ramusok Capital won its first NSCF Championship four years ago against fellow bluebloods Utica, the culmination of a long rebuilding process that began during NSCF 6. After following up the title with a Horizon Conference championship in NSCF 11, they were dethroned by domestic rivals Stoneshore College in NSCF 12 and 13. A surprise semifinals run in the NSCF 13 Playoffs saved Snorri Andersen's job for a little longer, but he was fired after failing to make the playoffs last season. Long the dominant program in Cosumar and the Horizon Conference, RCU are now seemingly stuck in third-best behind both Stoneshore and Harbor College. The challenge laid out for new head coach Cliff Scuttlesmith is to get RCU's mojo back. He has a very experienced team to work with - a large returning class of senior starters in key positions. Until that famed NSCF 10 season, RCU's best finishes were runs to the semifinals in NSCF 1 and 2.

Stoneshore College Bruins

Image

Location: Cape Dutch, Stoneshore, Cosumar

School Size: 29,300 undergraduates

Championships: 1 (NSCF 11), Conference Titles: 3 (NSCF 10, 12, 13)

Team History and Outlook: Stoneshore have shed the role of "RCU's little brother" in recent seasons, stepping out from the shadows and becoming a powerhouse in their own right. The year RCU won Cosumar's first NSCF title (NSCF 10), Stoneshore actually had the better regular season at 9-1. A year later in NSCF 11, the perpetual "little brother" finally had their revenge for years of misery at the Dragons' hands, knocking their rivals out of the Playoffs and winning a NSCF championship of their own. With their NSCF 13 conference title, Stoneshore matched RCU's total with three - and went all the way to the Championship Game, where they lost by 3 to Utica. Last season, however, they underwhelmed a little bit, barely scraping into the playoffs and going out in the semifinals. The Cosumarite balance of power is now firmly in favor of Stoneshore. On paper, they have better coaches, better starters, better new recruits. It will be fascinating to see if they can sustain this unprecedented strength or if last season was the beginning of revertion to the mean. The Bruins had a poor debut in NSCF 2, and had never even reached the postseason until NSCF 10. The turnaround in the last three years can be directly attributed to the arrival of legendary CFL coach Walter Hufnagel and his ambitious recruiting.

Like Captain Cook in Uncharted Waters: Scouting out the Honu for NSCF 15
Story by Abraham Shepherd

Mosaic--Football is in the air once again as the Harbor College Honu prepare for the NSCF’s 15th season, the team’s fifth in such a division. With the somewhat surprising berth in the championship tilt of NSCF 14, the Honu return with a more experienced group and incredible heart after Hurricane Kainoa was unable to derail last season. Now a year removed from the devastation, it remains to be seen how the Honu will respond under the name of Harbor College and the Kalalaun flag.

With so many questions yet to be answered, it is with clarity in mind that we submit to our readers our staffs’ take on this year’s roster with our annual scouting report.

The list below is sorted by alphabetic order so names can easily be located. It may be worthwhile to compare the list to the team’s official depth chart.

  • Abacus, Isodore-- LB: As one of the most tenured of the linebacking corps, Abacus should get plenty of room to shine for Fisafua's defense. He projects as one of the more heavily relied on of this deep defensive unit.
  • Abbott, Mordecai-- DB: Abbott will continue to defend the slot in both the base 3-5-3 and sub 3-3-5, but he is unlikely to make many big plays over the course of games. He should see regular snaps due to his familiarity with the system, but his talent has never truly developed in Fisafua's front-8 heavy scheme.
  • Anuenue, Koa-- DE: With behemoth Roosevelt Calderon a casualty of Honu graduates and senior Aruba Castille slotted for more NT work, the path is clear for Anuenue to wreak havoc on opposing offenses. Anuenue is going to be a flat out star in the Fisafua system, racking up sacks and tackles for loss like candy.
  • Ayers, Sabian-- LB: Ayers projects as a decent, middle of the road run stopper that can plug some of the gaps should opposing teams make it through the gauntlet of Delormier, Jesumbo, and Anuene. His pass protection is lacking, however, and will probably cede a few plays per game through the air. It will be tough for Ayers to see much time given those ahead of him on the depth chart.
  • Beachaven, Sylvester-- DE: Beachaven will have to continue biding his time, but his snaps will certainly increase with the departure of Roosevelt Calderon. Less refined than Anuenue ahead of him on the depth chart, Beachhaven should still turn out to be a monster based on speed and playmaking ability alone.
  • Bush, Jaelen-- RB: With Jonas Talbot's graduation, Bush appears in line to take a heavier amount of snaps, though we fully expect Ezekiel Pentecost to shoulder the lion's share. Bush can make an impact on somewhat limited snaps with good hands and speed, taking plays out in space as a receiver and kick returner.
  • Cabins, Balder-- LG: Cabins will retain his position at LG, despite possibly better play from Adriel Kana'i. Kana'i is the more versatile of the two and will act in a 6th man role for the entire offense, though we fully expect Cabins will take a back seat sooner or later. That said, Cabins shows incredible athleticism for a bigger guard in a system that often asks guards to pull, and that he is able (for now) to keep hold of an interior position on the left side of the line is testament to Cabins' ability.
  • Cassiel, Hurisko-- OL: Cassiel will take a backseat to Red Walrus as Walrus slides in from center for the outgoing Victor Reyes. We fully expect Cassiel to push for playing time, and has a likely chance to share for starter's quality snaps in what we project as a likely threeway split with Walrus and OL swiss army knife Kana'i.
  • Castille, Aruba-- DE/NT: Castille will still see plenty of snaps at DE, but with fresh talent chomping at the bit, we expect Castille to slide more into the NT spot as he spells Laurent Delormier. Castille is an excellent example of a player who would get many more reps for a less-deep school. Still, Castille should make a number of plays over the course of the season.
  • Cay, Nigel--RB/FB: One of these things is not like the other things, one of these things just doesn't belong: Cay will try to make the transition from a completely different offensive style to be a contributer for the Honu. He's a big, one-cut downhill runner who should see a handful of carries a la Brigham Cooke, and will likely line up as fullback frequently. Clement Acacia will look to develop Cay's passing skills; if Cay can make the transition from the ball control offense he ran in high school, we rather like his chances of turning into a big deal for the Honu over the latter part of his career.
  • Clocktower, Phineas-- TE: With Salvador Sandoval now out of the picture, Clocktower is locked in as a pure difference maker for the Honu. Clunkier linemen, shorter linebackers, and less physical defensive backs will have their hands full, and may assume that former Honu star Levi Savage has been reincarnated. First downs, touchdowns, it is clear that Clocktower will get down.
  • Cobbler, Augustine-- QB: Cobbler proved in NSCF 14 that a pure pocket passer can still be effective in a Goose Carneghy offense. He will probably get a longer leash than we would have assumed last year thanks to his role in leading the Honu to the NSCF 14 championship game. Still, we feel that the more athletic Peregrine is a better fit Carneghy's scheme.
  • Cobblestone, Lucian- DB: Cobblestone is set to inherit more playing time, and not just because of the departure of Saul Everett. Now in his second year in the Honu defense, we fully expect Cobblestone to begin standing out from other lackluster options in the Honu defensive secondary.
  • Condor, James--DB: Condor will need to work on his tendency to swoop in and jump the route on opposing WRs; this tendency should lead to a number of interceptions but also makes Condor susceptible to giving up big plays on the mis-read.
  • Cooke, Brigham-- RB: The thunder element in the Honu ground and pound storm. He should get a number of looks in short yardage situations, as well as later in games as the Honu look to exploit tired defenses. We had him as a sleeper pick last season, and double down on this assertation as he appears in line to inherit touches from the outgoing Jonas Talbot.
  • Copperplate, Solomon--DE: As has become the norm with Fisafua front eights, Copperplate is a great prospect who will likely have to watch from the sidelines more than had he signed with other schools. It will take some clock-ticking, but Copperplate could be solid gold...once he gets on the field.
  • Corona, Bartolome-- LB: First and foremost a run stopper, Bartolome will see plenty of opportunity early in the base 3-5-3. Corona is a fine example of the depth of Fisafua's front-8. Corona, however, is well on his way to being the heir to the throne for NSCF 16--for NSCF 15, expect Corona to be a heavy contributer.
  • Crenshaw, Mojave-- WR: He's a crisp route runner with good hands developed after carving tikis; these traits should see Crenshaw plenty of opportunity in the passing game. Still, his lack of improvisation when a play breaks down limits his upside. The 26 year old elder of the Honu offense, Crenshaw may also make a difference on special teams as a kick returner, though we expect Jaelen Bush to make bigger plays on that front.
  • Delormier, Laurent-- NT: The highly recruited Quebecois is, simply put, a behemoth of a man to gameplan around. A towering 8'3", he is going to gobble up the interior of the line and make it near impossible for opposing teams to run or pass up the middle. A bit undersized (!) when recruited, Delormier's added bulk last season made a world of difference--though his larger frame means that Aruba Castille will probably spell him a bit more at NT. If it were up to us, we'd change his name from Laurent to the more appropriate "Intimidation."
  • Eider, Camerynne-- K: Was Roxette singing of Eider in the hit song "She's got the look?" Not only does this Honu women's soccer star got the look, she's got that kicks. She doesn't have the leg to nail many long field goals, but she may be one of the few kickers in NSCF 15 who doesn't miss once inside of 40.
  • Encarnacion, Rogelio-- RB: Our projection from last year remains untouched: He can cut on a dime and has good hands, but his awkward size makes him hard to project. A small build on a 6' frame means he likely can't hold up to inner pounding but is also too tall to be completely elusive in the open space. Will be interesting to see how the Honu deploy Encarnacion, especially now with former Jonas Talbot touches up for grabs.
  • Foulweather, Brames--OL: Foulweather is listed as the second center according to the official depth chart, but if an injury were to force Gabriel Kalalau out, Red Walrus would almost certainly retake the center position, with Adriel Kana'i filling in at right guard. Foulweather may see limited snaps at the three interior line positions, and will more than likely be viewed as a developmental prospect on the line.
  • Half Dollar, Hiram-- P: His self proclaimed "rugby style knuckleball" punts should be entertaining at the very least, and if it works as he has advertised, may be a secret special teams weapon.
  • Hekili, Manu-- LB: His name literally means "Thunder Bird", and there should be plenty of thunder happening when he is on the field. Equal parts run and pass stopper, he gets his power more from speed than sheer size when compared to other Honu linebackers. He can make plenty of plays, and is likely to get in a number of sacks as well before the season is done.
  • Hobart, Obadiah-- DB: Hobart's quicks should allow him to see the field often enough, probably tasked with taking out the air on opposing deep threats. While he's got the speed to go toe to toe, we doubt he has the playmaking ability to fend off every big gainer. Younger DBs on the depth chart will likely push Hobart for time pretty quickly.
  • Hobbes, Azusa-- TE/FB: Hobbes is a better blocker than Clocktower and has decent hands, but is nowhere near the big play threat of Clocktower. Still, Hobbes will likely find a periodic role in the Honu offensive rhythm and make a few big plays as opposing linebackers lose him in coverage when expecting a run. Hobbes can also make an impact at fullback, where we expect he and freshman Nigel Cay to split the workload.
  • Holycross, Sisal-- LB: Depth is an incredible thing to have, and the Honu have it in bunches at the linebacking position. Holycross should see fresh opportunities with as one of the more experienced of the Honu linebacking crew; he'll be one of the starting five unit on most occasions, and will get plenty of reps as a substitute in the sub 3-3-5 package. A bigger 'backer, his run stopping prowess should give him plenty of opportunity to carve out a larger niche.
  • Hurley, Sal-- DB: Though he spent his younger years riding the professional surfing circuit, he has found a bit of rhythm on this Honu defense. Don't let this bro fool you: he's got a great work ethic which belies his laid back undertones--and parlayed it into more playing time in the defensive backfield.
  • Jesumbo, Adawale-- DE: Literal heir to the throne out of Congo and Zambezi, Jesumbo is an incredibly gifted athlete despite very minimal playing time in a nation that does not really follow gridiron football. With the exit of Roosevelt Calderon, Jesumbo should FEAST this year.
  • Kalalau, Gabriel-- C: Towering like the na pali, his superior footwork and long arms should do well to bottle up opposing interior defensive linemen now that he has taken over the starting center position. With his arm length as such an asset, Goose Carneghy should make ample use of spreading the field even more than in the past, a facet that should help in both the run game for Pentecost and the passing game for Cobbler. True story: Kalalau honed his skills wrestling wild pigs in the back of one of the nation's lushest valleys.
  • Kana'i, Adriel-- OL: He's listed as the second team LG, but for now, the Honu will be content to allow Kana'i the versatility he has shown as an offensive line free agent: While he is good enough to start, his athletic versatility to play any position on the OL makes him a sort of 6th man who will sub in early and often, keeping the OL fresh.
  • Kilauea, Esau--OL: Kilauea is probably a bit underweight to slide into the RT position, but his height and armlength should help. He'll need an injury to Oliver Sackcloth to see significant playing time this season, but this volcano could go off by entering the game with red-hot emotion.
  • Lazarus, Clive-- LB: That Lazarus is listed at #4 on the linebacking depth chart is testament to the strong recruiting class he enetered in; Make no mistakes, this linebacking corps is alive and well, and Lazarus will play a big part as one of the starters in the base 3-5-3 or one of the first alternates in the sub 3-3-5.
  • Leroy, Jenkins-- DB: It might go without noting, but when you sport a pink feather boa, blue snakeskin jacket, mirrored aviator sunglasses, and a green leopard print mohawk, you just might be a diva. He has the potential to be a superstar if he could just elevate his gameplay to half of his personality. It is rumored that he originally requested the number "X."
  • Muir, Simon--WR: Muir will get looks lining up on the outside opposite Tasman in some sort of time share with other receivers. Sooner or later we expect him to be a decent option in the Honu passing game, especially up the numbers.
  • Obsidian, Rudyard-- LB: There might be a thousand definitions of what makes a manly man, but we're pretty sure a lush, full beard fits with every single one of them. Obsidian looks more the part of lumberjack than he does linebacker, and let's be clear that he looks the part of all linebacker. Obsidian is the de facto top dog in a crowded field of linebackers, and has one final season of elligibility to perform his lumberjack games on opposing offenses.
  • Orchards, Lyman-- DB: Highly recruited to be the Honu next great shutdown corner, he's got all the measurables to be great at this level and beyond. NSCF 14 saw Orchards make great strides as the Honu #1 DB, and the additional experience should translate to Orchards becoming even more comfortable taking on top opposing WRs. This may be the year he puts it all together.
  • Pennyante, Reuben-- QB: He's athletic and may eventually be able fill the notably large shoes left vacant by Ezra Talbot. We imagine he's going to have to sit through some mediocre play from Augustine Cobbler and a potential change to Cyril Peregrine before he really gets his chance, but if Clement Acacia can develop him, he may turn into something special that the Honu can turn to in a couple of years.
  • Pentecost, Ezekiel-- RB: With the departure of Jonas Talbot and nobody else of his caliber on the depth cahrt, Pentcost is set to explode in the running game. Watch him if he slides into the slot, because he might burn you on the seams. With Augustine Cobbler at the helm, Pentecost becomes the lead runner in an offense that proved it could adapt out of typical Goose Carneghy style. With a less athletic Cobbler taking snaps, Pentecost projects as the most explosive player on the field with a chance to touch the ball some 25+ times per game.
  • Peregrine, Cyril-- QB: Peregrine will have to take a back seat to Cobbler again this year; Cobbler has much more of a leash than he did this time last year, due to his appearance in the NSCF championship game. Still, Peregrine is much more in the mold of dual threat akin to Ezra Talbot, and we expect Peregrine to eventually make snaps under center this year.
  • Pope, Cecil-- LS: How do you scout a long snapper? He certainly wouldn't perform too well if pressed into regular offensive line play, but as the guy designated to accurately snap 12 yards back? He checks the box in that regard.
  • Prefontaine, Laird-- WR: Borrowed from the Harbor Track and Field team, what Prefontaine lacks in size will be more than made up in pure speed and quick cuts. His speedometer means he is a homerun threat from both the short screen game and from sheer cheetah long balls, but if he gets caught in the middle, he may not have enough packaging to avoid breaking some dishes.
  • Sackcloth, Oliver-- RT: Sackcloth will get the nod as the starting RT, and with his particularly adept run blocking should have ample opportunity to set the edge for Pentecost and other runners
  • Sandbar, Elzavon-- DB: At 6'7" tall, one might wonder why he wasn't recruited as a WR. But that is the sort of thing that happens when you can't catch. May very well lead the Honu in passes defended without notching a single interception.
  • Scribe, Felix-- WR: Scribe projects as a chain-moving, inside receiver who is unafraid to take a hit from a linebacker. His tough as nails mentality could serve a weaker WR corps well. He will be good but not great roleplayer in this Honu offense.
  • Seasalter, Bartemeus-- LT: With a year under his belt in the Honu system, Seasalter has now officially supplanted Lex Talionis as the starting LT. Along with other OL upstarts, Seasalter should be well involved in shoring up the line for the next few years. While there may be some cohesion problems early with this OL, once they start to gel, look out.
  • Shackleton, Titus-- LB: With so many Honu linebackers in their senior year, we expect Fisafua to get Shackleton on the field quite a bit in attempt to soften the transition in NSCF 16. Shackleton has all of the tangibles to make a difference in NSCF 15 and beyond once those ahead of him graduate.
  • Silversword, Haleakala--TE: Even with the departure of Salvador Sandoval, Silversword likely will not see too many snaps at TE with Clocktower and Hobbes ahead on the depth chart. Silversword could be a playmaker some day, but its going to take some movement on the depth chart before that happens. Silversword may also see snaps at FB.
  • Slatechrome, Calvin-- LB: Big, strong, fast--he's definitely got the measurables to succeed in a Samson Fisafua defense. There's quite a bit of talent ahead of him on the depth chart, but with four senior linebackers on the Honu roster, Slatechrome will begin to make a difference really quick as Fisafua attempts to bridge NSCF 15 and NSCF 16. Slatechrome and Shackleton will be the cream that rise to the top as as soon as those ahead of them graduate, and will make a definite impact in NSCF 15 as well.
  • Smith V, John--WR: Sure his name is somewhat strange, but Smith the Fifth has the ability to be a major contributor as Clement Acacia develops him, and could conceivably develop into a natural in the Carneghy offense.
  • Talionis, Lex-- OL: A true student of the game, Talionis studies tape like a quarterback with his "get what you deserve" practice mentality; still, he finds himself behind Bartemeus Seasalter due to the athleticism of the latter.
  • Tasman, Asa-- WR: Big, strong, fast, smart. Ticks every box in that category and has all the physical traits to be a rare talent. After the hemhorraging of the Honu offense following devastating departures from NSCF 13, Tasman earned a significant "pass" during NSCF 14. With the Honu offense rebooted and Augustine Cobbler proving to be at least effective, Tasman could explode on to the NSCF 15 scene as the now defacto #1 receiver for the Honu.
  • Ullysses, Grant-- DB: Definitely faded down the stretch in NSCF 14; what he had on younger DBs on the depth chart in experience has all but evaporated as Ullysses enters NSCF 15. We expect the playing time gap to significantly narrow, with younger DBs almost certain to wrest away playing time and potentially pass him on the depth chart.
  • Walrus, Red-- RG: With Gabriel Kalalau sliding into the starting center position, Walrus will take over at RG, but Hurisko Cassiel should continue to push for time. We'd give it a pretty likely chance that Walrus, Cassiel, and Kana'i play pretty even time at the RG spot. Despite the unconventional naming (by this nation's standards), make no doubt about it: Walrus is a fish and poi local boy who is ready to get after it.
  • Whaler, Amos-- WR: Whaler came in to the Honu program as a pedestrian recruit, and played limited snaps during NSCF 14 as a result. He's always projected as more of a longer term development project, and now in his sophomore year may begin to see some of that development in the Carneghy offense. Should inherit a few extra looks from the departure of Estancio Abascal.

Alright gamers: what's your projection? We love to hear from our readers in the comments. Let us know which Honu players you will be most closely watching as the season progresses!

Castle Daily
The best blog for Castle University Students

Introduction for freshman students

Congratulations. If you're reading this, there's a good chance that you now attend the greatest and most fun university in all of Redvale. Maybe you've gotten a government offered scholarship because you're gifted, or maybe you paid with your own money to get in, or you transferred from a smaller school. Whatever the case, you're part of the black and gold family now. You probably know this already, but CU is located far from the other major cities, close to the southeastern coast of the island. Avgaria is to our northwest, but they're a three or four hour drive away from the city proper. Elysia is the closest well known city, but that's about an hour away to the north. Our distance from everyone else has led to our community becoming quite tight knit.

If you're coming from Avgaria or Maris, you can get here by taking the maglev train. That's the fastest way if you're coming all the way from Maris, especially, since it's a day’s drive away by car. If you're in Elysia or Glenham, driving is the quickest way to reach the school. Ravenfeld has a train line connected to our city, but it's going to be slower than the Maris line. But before you get here, you should know a bit about our history. Castle was founded in the first age of the gods as a coastal bastion against foreign invaders.

It was built around a fortified settlement near the coast that slowly expanded inland until it was a real city. The university was founded in the second age of the gods, specifically the year 289, and was built to the north of the main city. Our campus is located in a suburb called Fjordham, named that for its proximity to the coastal fjords. As a university of roughly 24,000 students, the campus is pretty large and spread out. If you’re moving in, you’re either headed to the central area where the main campus and the dorms are, or you’re going to the northeast section of town where some of the students live in cheap apartments. If you’re moving into the dorms, the most notable thing you’ll pass on your way there is the giant Vali temple that the school is built around. It’s one that’s dedicated to all of the gods, but especially our patron goddess, Osytia. For those who aren’t from around here, she’s the goddess of the sea, rain, and the protector of coastal cities.

The other giant structure that you’ll see is Worker’s Stadium, the one that everyone on campus calls The Hive. It’s a newer stadium that was built in 493, and was the site of the game against Avgaria Tech that gave Castle its only Super Twelve conference title. Next door to it is the Hornet Dome, the home of our dominant college basketball team. Both buildings are on the western side of campus, and you’ll see them packed out on gamedays. Hornet Square is what the space between the two stadiums is called, and if there’s an especially huge game, you’ll see students hanging out there and watching on giant TV screens that get set up in the largest plaza.

One street that you should check out soon after moving in is Park Street, which is a few blocks away from The Hive and the H-Dome. That’s where the campus nightlife is, and where the best places to eat during the day are. If you’re lucky, you can run into Castle basketball players pretty often down there, and the shops and businesses there are the heartbeat of the inner campus. You can also find good food on the northwest side of town if you’re willing to drive, and sometimes there’s street food vendors outside of class buildings.

The big thing that new freshman need to know isn’t related to classes here, which we can’t give advice on because they vary depending on what specific part of school you’re attending, but is related to socializing. Like a few other big Redvali colleges, there aren’t many fraternities and sororities here, at least in the traditional sense. Instead, there’s religious orders dedicated to certain gods and goddesses, or groups of them. These orders typically house all of their members in certain dorms, and have a zone of influence known as their turf. Before you move in, you should make sure that any existing religious loyalties you have don’t conflict with those of the nearest order. When looking for new friends, joining one of these orders is a popular way to find them.

The most popular order is Blue Fjordham, dedicated to Osytia, but you can find many other orders around the school. The most popular place to find their recruiters is Hornet Square, where they often hold exclusive tailgates for football games. Most orders have a symbol and/or colors, and ask their members to represent the order. Some do this by wearing clothes with the symbol, others do it through necklaces and bracelets with that symbol or by wearing the colors. Blue Fjordham is the easiest to join because they’ll accept anyone who wears their trident symbol, but others will have other requirements. For example, the Northern Nomads are only open to students from outside of Castle, and most of their members are from Maris or Avgaria. If you do manage to join an order as soon as you get into the school, be sure to ask about their magic classes. Being a part of one of the larger orders is the quickest way to learn magic if it isn’t your major.

One more thing that you should know about is the general spacing. Since the school is giant, everything is spread out a lot. The northeast is mostly housing and shops, the central area is the main campus, the northwest is the law school, and to the south and southwest is the medical campus and magic school. The southeast is something of a suburb that a lot of alumni live in, and it connects everything with the actual city of Castle. This isn’t a campus that you can easily get around by walking, so it’s best to either have a car or pay up front to get unlimited access to the public transit.

Lastly, we should warn everyone that there’s been some strange occurrences happening recently. A student disappeared last week, the main hall used for magic instruction burnt down under strange circumstances, and the basketball teams reported seeing strange things outside the H-Dome. The writers of this blog have been investigating these things as we speak. If you come across something that could explain these things, feel free to go to our contact page and send us an email. We would tell you that we hope you enjoy your time in Castle, but we already know you will. It’s the greatest city on the island by far, which you'll soon learn once you spend some time here.

Castle football preview, for the 508-509 season

Sport and CU have been intertwined for a long time, and now, football season is starting soon. Well, international football season is at least. For the first time, Castle is competing in the Mineral Conference against international teams(and one other Redvali team). We don’t know what the level of competition will be like, but coach Francis Allan has already expressed his confidence in the team, saying: “This is a new competition but not necessarily a tougher one than the Super Twelve. We’re going to keep doing what we do and we’re going to stay true to our strategy of grinding out wins and winning ugly. Our team is built to win when it’s overmatched, I don’t see why we can’t continue to do that against international schools.”

This team has a decent offense, but it’s a bit of a step down from past years. For one, we don’t have a quarterback that we can reliably count on. Amalie Russey is the first female quarterback in school history to become a starter, but she’s no traditional QB. She stands at six feet tall and weighs in at one hundred and forty eight pounds, but despite not being as big and heavy as a typical running quarterback, she’s a true scrambler who uses her feet just as much as her arm. In a way, she’s suited to running plays out of the veer formation that’s been used for the past years under coach Allan, but she doesn’t have a cannon for an arm and her passing velocity could use work too. If we win with her, it’s going to be because of her toughness and because she can pass short with accuracy. There’s also concerns that she’s going to get injured, because of her physicality and her willingness to take huge hits to get more yards. There’s also worries that as a woman, she could have trouble dealing with sexism from both CU fans and rival fans.

The main weapon coming out of the backfield is Johan Abate, a balanced 6’5 runner with an all around skillset. He’s a senior, so unlike Russey, we’ve seen a lot of him and we know that he’s a reliable performer. Abate isn’t blazingly fast, or insanely strong, but he knows how to find gaps and get through them. His vision as a runner is his main strength and it’s also what’s given him the starting job once again after he led the team in rushing as a junior and was in the running for the All-Redvali team. Notably, he was a member of the high school version of that team, and is one of the top five all time high school rushers in Redvale. Compared to his high school numbers, he’s actually underperformed, but he’s projected to dominate carries and yards this season.

Playing next to him is the younger but faster Jace Coiro, who according to reports out of training camp, would have been the starter if it wasn’t for having a poor attitude and being more prone to getting into trouble off the field. Coiro often receives the ball when Abate is tired, but also when the team is in the red zone and they want a speed option instead of the more balanced Abate. He’s best when he’s running off tackle or running behind a pulling guard, allowing him to build up speed and then break into the open field. In addition to having speed, Coiro has an exceptional vertical jump and has a filthy juke move that often leaves defenders dazed and confused as he continues past them. The third string running back, walk on Dante White, may see some snaps on third downs also because of his power. He walked on and didn’t expect to play in his freshman season, but in training camp he showed prowess for getting short gains because of his size and strength. White can also come in as a fullback, as there isn’t a dedicated fullback on the roster and instead backup running backs and tight ends are used if this role is needed.

The offensive line is anchored by left tackle Shayne Mora, the senior who smashed expectations as a two star recruit. He’s 6’4 and weighs 300 pounds, and it’s not going to be easy for opposing pass rushers to get around him. At center is former highly touted recruit Jax Pace, who has good chemistry with Amalie Russey and in addition to being big, has great vision and is one of the reasons why the veer offense works so well. You can expect to see him calling out adjustments every play, and helping the rest of the line to identify the most dangerous threats from the other team’s defense.

Our wide receiver corps is alright this year even though it’s not great. There’s only one really good consistent performer, but there’s some other players who can come through in a pinch at times. Bane Scott, the familiar senior, is the undisputed leader of the receivers this time. The player who got his nickname because of his toughness should be the one to lead Castle in receiving yards, catches, and touchdowns. At 6’6, it was surprising to see Bane run a 4.3 forty yard dash time, but speed or height isn’t his main strength. His main strength is the ability to catch anything thrown his way, whether the pass is good or not. With Russey’s lack of a good deep arm, it’s going to be crucial for him to continue catching jump balls for touchdowns.

Starting in most games opposite of him will be Ibrahim Marks-Kagawa, who is starting over several better deep options because he’s good at getting yards from short catches, making him a good target for Russey. The attention on Scott will also give Ibrahim more room to operate down low while Scott goes deep, which should lead to him getting many more catches than he did last season, where he didn’t play much. The third option is Jimi Rossi, who will see a lot of snaps despite not starting. Rossi can go deep but he’s also a pretty good mid range receiver and he should be a viable option in the red zone.

While the offense is workable, the real strength of this Castle team is the defense. It’s built around the linebackers for another year, as this team has insane talent in the middle of the field. Kyle Stratton returns as the team captain after taking that mantle during last season when he was a redshirt junior, and the versatile leader does everything from stuffing the run to blitzing, in addition to calling out any adjustments and sometimes changing the plays. Stratton is trusted by defensive coordinator Cameron Rose because he’s not just a great hitter, but he’s smart enough to find ways to win matchups despite being undersized at only six feet tall. He makes up for that short height with speed, and is the fastest player in the front seven.

Joker Steele will line up next to him once again, and Joker is the strength to Kyle’s speed. He’s the run stuffer of the three linebackers, and the one who’s always the first to make a big hit on the running back. Steele has great stamina and has an even better motor, and his power rushing techniques are second to none. He can switch between inside and outside linebacker at will, making him a good defender down the middle and off of the edge. The last member of the group of starting linebackers is redshirt junior Marquis Arana, who can be considered a mix of both players and a quick defender who can shut down passing lanes over the middle with his big hits, despite being prone to getting penalties for leading with his helmet or pass interference. Arana, a former safety in high school, is 6’3 and 240 pounds, and can lay someone out with a big hit just as well as any of the other defensive stars on the team.

Playing below the linebackers is a defensive line that has the goal of limiting damage rather than making big plays. Local kid Javier Hathaway is the one member of that line that’s a threat to take yards away from the offense, because of his speed rushing prowess. Javier is lightweight and agile, and his hands are second to none. Many schools double team him on every rush, which also opens room for Kyle Stratton or Marquis Arana to rush the passer. Kane Rojas is shaping up to be a decent player too, but he’s more of a run stopper than a pass rusher who can get into the backfield.

Up top, the theme of big hitters continues with safety Jean Michel Pierre, who is 5’10 but can hit like the biggest of players. Pierre has been starting because he has great hands and is a threat to come down and make interceptions. While his specialty is supporting the linebackers, the other safety, Gunnar Knight, focuses on deep coverage and often finds himself playing in cover one schemes where Pierre plays above the flat or in a zone in the middle of the field. Knight’s hands aren’t as good, but he can knock down some passes and push receivers off of their routes with his size.

The cornerbacks are going to make or break this team, as corner play was a problem last season in the Super Twelve. Amalie Russey’s sister, Arielle, was the first female defensive player to start last season, and now she finds herself as arguably the top corner. She’s fast and long, and she’s expected to improve her man to man coverage this season. She’ll have to, because the other options aren’t that great. Zach Lafayette is a senior, but he’s streaky and you never know who’s going to show up: the Zach that can make amazing interceptions and shut down the other team’s number one receiver, or the one who gets burned for touchdowns and misses easy chances to knock the ball down. Cameron Rose has been working with Lafayette to cover one on one better, but we haven’t seen much improvement from training camp and he could be the weak link of the defense.

Special teams should be pretty good too. Luis Arana, the brother of Marquis, has a big time leg, which was shown when he kicked a sixty one yard field goal last season against Avgaria. Surprisingly, he could be the one to keep the team in games when the offense slows down as expected. Punt returning should be handled by freshman receiver Heath Silvas, who walked on because of his skill as a return man and should see more snaps at returner than at receiver.

It’s time to make some predictions for the team. The backfield should be solid enough to minimize mistakes from Amalie Russey, and Bane Scott could be an all-conference player when everything's said and done. The defense has holes, most notably in the secondary and line, but depth at linebacker is great and Kyle Stratton is the best college linebacker in Redvale. A lot of teams should sleep on Castle, but we expect to see some upset wins at home because this team plays excellent when the crowd is motivating them and the Hive is going to be completely raucous for our first games against international competition. Because of these factors, we give the team a B+ grade going into the new NSCF season, and we predict them to finish second in the Mineral Conference and win the Pioneer Bowl.

It’s a bold prediction, of course, but have some faith in the team. After all, coach Allan and the rest of the staff do.

IMPORTANT OOC NOTE: Because of bad timing on my part, I didn't get all the Super Twelve stuff written before this started. My RP line with MMU is about the domestic season, and even though it hasn't been added to my sports thread yet, it's important to know that MMU went 14-1 and is coming off of a Super Twelve title and a national championship loss to Janford College. I'll get the updates on that season out over time, but canonically the events of the season happened before NSCF.

MOUNT MARIS UNIVERSITY FRIARS

THE ROSTER

Mount Maris University, hailing from the North Coast suburb of Maris, is one of the elite programs in Redvali college football, with six conference titles in the current era of the Super Twelve conference and three national titles, which were won back to back to back from 500 to 502. Now, the most loved and hated school in the country is heading abroad to compete in the Mineral Conference against the multiverse's best, and head coach and last season's offensive coordinator Arend Starke has said that the Friars are coming in with the same expectations that they have every season: winning the conference and more. They're definitely one of the more notable newcomer programs this time around, with the largest outdoor stadium in the country and a storied domestic history boosting their expectations for international play. Previous head coach Rori Callahan was fired after the national championship after losing the locker room midway through the season, but head coaching changes haven't stopped Maris in the past. Only time will tell if the Friars can live up to what the press and their fans expect, as they look to continue their momentum from winning the Super Twelve.

Preview: MMU's storied program went through a tumultuous offseason where Rori Callahan was fired despite winning the conference, because the players didn't like his strict coaching style and disagreed with his treatment of quarterback Drago Morena, who was benched and outed for having mental issues midway through the season. Callahan's players didn't want to play for him, and thus athletic director Markus Fuller fired him and replaced him with offensive coordinator Arend Starke, who was credited with the spread attack working well this season.

The roster Starke inherited is a good one, starting at the QB position where Drago Morena brings his great short and mid range passing as well as good movement to the table. Lewis Ite is manageable at running back and Aleix Fuller and Cooper Biro are legitimate studs at receiver, and both of them will be playing on Sundays in the future. Biro is tall and Fuller can catch, and when the two of them are together, it's terrifying for a defense. The offensive line is stronger on the weak side of the field, but there may be good options on the bench if the starters don't perform.

The defense has great momentum from last domestic season, and their 3-4 system returns another season. Ky Augustus is the star at linebacker and despite an average linebacker corps outside of him, Eke Kuhn is a freshman stud at defensive end and should greatly help the pass rush. Jorgen Devold holds down the middle and is expected to use his size to stuff the run as the only tackle in the formation. The real stars of the defense are in the back, namely Jay Melo and Julien Preus. The corner combination is going to be very hard to score on, as both have a great combination between size and speed. Jan Dokken is a hard hitter at safety and is expected to lead the secondary as a senior. Overall, the team has a very good balanced roster and is expected to compete for the Mineral Conference title, and their title hopes are helped by the fact that every other team in the conference this season is a newcomer.

OOC: Here's a new series from the first person POV of the Mount Maris QB. Please note this takes place during the domestic season which is before the NSCF season. My roster post explains this.
Our Team

Part One

Picture, if you will, a posh room overlooking a massive college campus. It’s decorated like it belongs in the loft of someone who lives in the trendy, gentrified part of town, but there’s nothing overtly flashy about the room. The opposite is closer to the truth. While the room is expensive looking, most of the colors are sand tones. The lighting is a dimmed yellow, making it just bright enough to see everything clearly but just dark enough to trigger a relaxing response in the brain. At least, that’s what the person sitting in the center of the room told me when I asked her why the lights were dimmed like this.

In the middle, there’s two couches in the shape of half circles, and between them, there’s a round tan ottoman. Sitting on the couch facing me is the psychologist that I came here to see. Her name is Carlie Endosa, and she’s supposed to be the best one on campus. Her prices are usually the highest, too, but since coach Callahan recommended that I see her, the school is paying for it. Apparently, that’s not a violation by Super Twelve rules. “Welcome, Drago, come sit down,” she says to me, and I nod and walk to the couch.

I sit down across from her. She pushes a button on the remote, and the blinds shut over the window behind her. Pity. I think it’s relaxing to look at the cityscape, but she doesn’t think so. I’m not comfortable here, but I do my best not to show it. I place my backpack on the ground next to me and pull the hood of my black and cyan jacket over my head. I suppose you could call that a defense mechanism, even if I don’t quite know why I do it. “Sorry I’m late… It’s easy to get lost around this campus.”

“No problem. I take it that you’re just getting back from summer break?” asks Carlie, making small talk to break the ice between us. While she’s reading me, I’m also reading her and seeing if she’s the kind of person I trust. Most of the time, I don’t like psychologists. They just try to put you on meds that fix symptoms, not problems.

“Yeah. I went out west and stayed in Janford for a bit with my brother and sister…” I say, before pausing awkwardly. “It was nice, I guess.”

“Ah, I see. You’re from Janford originally, correct?”

I shrug. “I’m from the island, not the city. But yeah. You could say that. It’s not as much of a home as Maris is.”

“What makes you say that?” Carlie asks, predictably. She’s sitting up and leaning forward just slightly. She makes eye contact, and her pupils dilate slightly enough that almost anyone else would miss that tiny detail. In simpler terms, she’s genuinely interested.

“I don’t talk with my parents, and I have a… Shaky relationship with my siblings. I prefer to keep away from them if I can,” I answer honestly, crossing my arms and leaning back in the seat.

“If you prefer to keep away from them, why did you stay with them during summer break?”

I pause and shift my gaze away from her eyes. “There wasn’t anywhere else to go. I didn’t want to stay here all summer, not after the way last season ended because of me. Even when everyone tells me that I’m a great player, I know they’re just saying it to be nice. They all blame the loss on me.”

Carlie writes something down in her little notebook, and I shift my eyes back to her. She’s kind of cute. Her short black hair is a mess, a contrast from some of the other doctors I’ve seen, ones that want to look professional and orderly. “What happened at the end of the season?”

She knows good and well what happened at the end of the season, but wants to hear it in my words. “We had two losses. One in the conference. We were playing Janford College, and they had one out of conference loss but they were undefeated in conference play. If we beat them, we could have forced a three way tie for the lead between them, us, and A-Tech. There was a minute left and we were down by six points, at home. It was fourth down with four yards to go. Coach Callahan went for the touchdown instead of the first down, and Aleix Fuller was open on the left side. I got hit as I was throwing, and the play was incomplete. We lost, Janford went on to win the conference, and it’s all because I made a bad throw to a wide open receiver.”

“Ah, yes. I remember. Rori did tell me that you were having some trouble getting over bad results. He said that everyone’s moved forward except for you, and said that you have a hard time letting go.”

I roll my eyes at that comment. “The others can move forward because they aren’t expected to be the poster child of the school. They aren’t the ones who see their faces on billboards around campus and see their own jerseys in the stands every game. Mount Maris has always been a quarterback school… Players like Aleix and Ky may be stars also, but they don’t have anything close to the expectations that I do,” I reply, before realizing that I’m giving away a bit more than I want to. “Coach doesn’t know what it’s like to have pressure from the entire school to succeed. He also doesn’t know what it’s like to fail their expectations so badly.”

Carlie writes something else down, and I wait for her to finish before speaking again. “You could say that’s why I went to Janford, despite not wanting to hang out with my siblings. I wanted to get away from here for a bit and see if I would feel better. It only helped a little bit.”

“Okay. Let’s talk about something else. Rori also told me that you’ve had problems with psychosis? Can you describe your symptoms to me?”

I sigh and cross my arms again. “When we were playing at Avgaria and against Janford, and through part of the offseason, I heard some voices in my head that weren’t mine. I think it was just stress induced, I haven’t heard the voices in a month or two. I really never thought coach would make a big deal of it… I told him about it when he said that it was like I had a sixth sense for avoiding danger, because those voices kept me from getting sacked a bunch of times during those games.”

“Can you describe the voices?” asks Carlie, and I nod.

“The one that talked the most sounds like me, but not quite. Like a brother or a cousin or something. It kind of made observations and told me about them. About other people, about the games, and some other stuff. The other one, which sounded younger, was more chatty. It went back and forth with the other voice sometimes, and it was the one that gave me quick advice in games,” I explain, doing my best to not sound crazy. “They only showed up late into the season and they left afterward. As strange as this sounds, they were much more helpful than annoying.”

I expect her to say something about how I shouldn’t be hearing voices and how they aren’t helpful, but she just nods in acknowledgement. “I’ve heard of people like you, who hear voices under stress. I’ve also had clients who have received help from those voices. I think I’m going to check some stuff about that before we talk about this any further. I want to talk about one of the things that has been at the root of your stress. You say that your relationship with your family isn’t good?”

“It is what it is,” I say, and then my phone buzzes. My manager wants me to get to get to the training field for a shortened training session with the rest of the team, our last practice before we fly out to prepare for our opening game against NSU. She says that there’s a change of plans and that I’m going to lose the QB job unless I impress coach with a great performance. It means I’ll have to leave early, which is a shame. Carlie is the only psychologist I’ve seen that I haven’t hated.

I text back saying I’ll be there. In a few minutes. Somehow, I actually care enough not to leave abruptly. I want to say goodbye properly before I go, and see when Carlie wants me to come back. I thought I would be trying to duck out of the next appointment, but now I’m interested in seeing where these talks head.

It would do me good to talk about some of the stressful shit going on right now.

=====

As soon as I pull up outside the training complex, I see my manager, Harper Velasquez. She’s hanging by the door, with one hand in the pocket of her cyan jacket and the other hand holding a lit cigarette. She always has a strange fashion sense, and that’s the case today too. Somehow she has on a fall jacket but a pair of shorts that are more suitable for the summer heat than a cool fall day like this. When I get out and approach her, she holds the door for me as I step inside the building. “You said my job was in trouble?”

“I overheard Rori talking about it last night,” Harper says, taking a drag from her cigarette and blowing smoke in my face. “Ryan Kada is gonna get the job unless you prove you should keep it. Coach doesn’t like your mental state and says Kada is more stable and has a better deep arm.”

I sigh and then nod and change the subject, observing Harper’s body language. She looks and sounds confident enough in my abilities, and as usual, she’s the only one here who has that kind of confidence in me. “You’re giving yourself cancer, you know.”

“Am I?” she asks, puffing more smoke as the two of us walk through the winding corridors of the complex until we go through a glass pair of doors leading to the main field. “Go out there and do your thing… I know you have it in you to be better than Kada, he’s dogshit at everything except deep passing.”

The rest of the team turns and watches me enter, and Ryan looks visibly worried. He didn’t think I’d be here today, after all. He has the look that quarterbacks usually reserve for when they’ve just thrown an interception. I move to the sideline and find a training vest and a helmet, which I pull on before approaching coach Callahan.

Rori Callahan is an experienced coach, who was brought in two years ago to replace our last head coach that was more successful but got involved in a slush fund scandal and left the school on bad terms. He’s won titles at the University of Avgaria, but I don’t quite trust this old man. Not only did he make the switch from our biggest rivals, but he’s a big personality. The kind of coach who pushes his players around just because he can, to assert his dominance. I hate coaches like him. He’s not the man who recruited me here and redshirted me four seasons back. “Drago, I didn’t expect to see you here today. What happened to your appointment with Carlie?”

“I left early because a friend told me that you were planning on giving the start to Ryan behind my back,” I say with an edge to my voice. “I decided to come toss the ball around and prove that I still deserve to start… Though it looks like we’re almost done here.”

“You came a bit late,” Rori states, taken aback by the force in my tone. “And I haven’t done anything behind your back. You scheduled the appointment yourself. I-”

“I scheduled an appointment on practice day because I didn’t know you’d use it as an excuse to give the start this week to my rival,” I snap, getting in his face and leaning over him. Rori stares back at me, his look telling me not to make a scene. “This is why we don’t trust you, coach. Because you pull bullshit like this. You fucking told me I would be our day one starter, now you send me to see a shrink so you can make some bullshit story about my mental health as an excuse to-”

“Drago, I’m sorry. You’ll be starting in the international opener,” Rori says, backtracking on his previous plans. “I don’t know where you heard that you won’t be starting. How about you come to me first instead of making a scene, eh?”

“I heard from a very good source,” I say, and then I back up and rip my helmet off, shaking my brown hair back and looking at the crowd of my teammates that’s assembled. “Don’t try any more bullshit, Rori. Don’t think I won’t transfer and leave you without a decent QB.”

With that, I turn and walk off. There’s camera flashes, and Harper is waiting for me outside. I just broke Rori’s big rule, which is to never make a scene. I don’t care. What I do care about is the future of my career, and I’m not going to let voices or a rival teammate or a jackass coach hurt that. “I said to throw the ball, not to chew out coach in front of everyone,” Harper says, slapping me on the back as we walk out together.

“If it has the same effect, what difference does it make?”

She pauses, and then grins. “I guess the answer to that is none.”

89 WR Jake Firela returns Punts and Kicks

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my Scorers: Yes.
Choose Scoring Events: Yes.
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes.
RP Injuries to my Players: Yes.
Godmod Injuries to my Players: Anything not career-ending is fine, even without TG.
Godmod Other Events: Yes.

Honestly, just don't destroy my organization. Have fun making a funny or quirky game occur. I will certainly enjoy anything you throw my way.

Style Modifier: +4

In the leagues of Drawkian College Football, the Drawk Corps is the most renowned and perhaps feared organization in the country. Perhaps their most interesting feature is their frequency of blitzing, attempting at least 2 per drive on average, more if they're successful. They typically play 4-4-3, and on brief occasion, 4-2-5.

Due to the doctrine of the Drawk Corps organization, the Quarterback calls plays unless they're doing absolutely terribly, for which the Offensive Coordinator or Head Coach will step in to stop the suckage. For the most part, the Drawk Corps opts for 1 WR, 3 RB, and a TE. The Passing game is decent, but considering Drawkland's avid running culture, the Running game is top-notch. They usually use both at whatever discretion, but favor running, sometimes jumping over the pile on the line of scrimmage to gain yards.

The Special Teams is the highest quality in Drawkland's college football. Their accuracy is nearly pinpoint in good weather, but has a steep curve when the weather worsens. The length has a little to be desired, however. The Drawk Corps is notorious for using fake kicks, and usually fake punts.

Kicks returned usually by #89 WR Jake Firela.

Rather self-explanatory, Drawk Corps University is the University owned and operated by the Drawk Corp organization of Drawkland. It's a self-sustaining organization, with many branches. It's almost an independent country living on Drawkland's grounds. It owns many companies, and employs many workers, but most importantly and visibly, they operate sports teams, on the professional, minor professional, collegiate, and even high school level. They have teams in every major league Drawkian sport, and in even some less-than-major sports.
Football and Marching Band are their strong points for sure, and the Drawk Corps University Football is definitely the pride of both the Corps and Drawk City.
The Drawk Corps University's teams are all called "Drawk Corps University Drawk Corps," so it's usually abbreviated as simply "Drawk Corps" since everyone knows who you're talking about in context, or as the locals or avid fans/members call it, simply "The Corps" or "Corps."

OOC: There is a stadium for the Drawk Corps, but I have a very specific design for it so I can't exactly attach an image here. I might be able to model it or draw it well a few seasons from now.

As it can be determined from the roster, most Drawkian players are about a foot taller and a couple dozen pounds heavier than the average players of other teams. This is due to the evolution of the species, in the haunted times, required to grow taller to seek potential threats and to have longer legs to run faster. So, the team isn't made of 7 foot freaks, that's just how the average Drawkian looks. It will obviously still be a disadvantage to teams the Drawkians face, but most Drawkains are also less stocky-built, so the effects even out.

Also, see this dispatch.

The Condors run a 3-4 defense with emphasis on pass protection. They are very vulnerable to the short run game, however, and the goal line stand is abysmal. The bright spot on the defense is the two cornerbacks. They are excellent in man-to-man, and their impressive verticals and amazing agility allow them to excel in long passes. They suffer somewhat in the short passing game, but they are always there to stop the receiver right after the catch. The offense is the focal point of the Condors. The preferred form is shotgun, with the QB excelling in the pocket against zone coverage. Against teams that blitz frequently, he completes 34% of his passes. He also completes 75% of his passes in zone coverage. The running back is known for his yards after contact, averaging 8.2. He is also agile in the open field, so the opposing offensive line needs to be stout to stop him. The kicker is the highlight of special teams. He has proven himself able to kick 52 yard field goals at practice. If the strong winds are to his back in this tournament, there is no telling what he can do.

Assistant Coaches/Coordinators:
OC: Thomas Morton

Special Teams Coach: Chris Boone
Assistant Coach: Manny Macaroni

The Roadrunners run a no huddle, fast paced offense. They like to pass the ball and are very capable of running as well. Expect them to run the ball on third and short situations, but also will occasionally run on first and second down as well. They like to trip opponents up with a play action to keep the defense guessing. Their favorite formation is a trips formation called "Sugar". The new Offensive Coordinator, Thomas Morton liked the formation but changed some of the plays left by the previous OC. He was also the one that changed this offense to fast paced because he believed that this team did better when there was a sense of urgency after looking at last year's film. Many fans hope that this revamped offense will be more productive after having six shutouts posted against them last year including the Pioneer Bowl.

The Roadrunners use a 3-4 defense. They like to protect against the pass but also want to be gap sound so they will switch to a 4-3 or 5-2 front if necessary to help against the run. While Last year the defense did not do well, there was no change at the DC position as it was thought they did well enough to give the DC another shot.

Probably the best unit out on the field last season. The Special Teams had a lot of time on the field because the offense couldn't get going. However the punter was able to punt the ball very far averaging professional league numbers of 50+ yards a punt. They never allowed a punt returned for a touchdown and only allowed a long return once. The Kickoff Team also does very well.

The team is a perennial contender in Abanhfleft's NCAA system, and has won at least eight titles in the last thirteen years, most recently the NSCF's Zephyr Conference. THEREISNOGODISTAN COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE
OFFICIAL TEAM SHEET

Thereisnogodistan County is a county in the Abanhfleft colony of the Fhulghamous Peninsula. It was established on November 30, 2014 from the splitting of Haritzaga County, by Colonial Executive Order No. 190047. The southern part of the county retained the name and history of Haritzaga County, while the northern part was named Thereisnogodistan County. The county seat is Thereisnogodabad.

Thereisnogodistan County Community College is an American football team based in Thereisnogodabad, Fhulghamous Peninsula. Its home ground is Richard Dawkins Park, a 23,171-seater park named after the prominent atheist Richard Dawkins, which is also currently the home ground of Fleftic Premier League team Thereisnogodistan F.C. Even though it is a college team, Thereisnogodistan Community College has participated in the World Bowl many times and even came out runners-up in the last-ever edition of the Baptism of Iron, and World Bowl XXVIII.

BASIC INFORMATION
Name of team:
Thereisnogodistan FC
Team colors: Yellow shirt, pants, socks, and helmet (home); white shirt, pants, socks, and helmet (away)
Style modifier: +3.5. Thereisnogodistan is inspired by Fleftic sporting philosophy in that the best defense is offense.
Manager: Francois-Michel Nkong'o (Abanhfleft, 44 years old)

HOME STADIUM
Image
Richard Dawkins Park will serve as Thereisnogodistan's home stadium for the entirety of NSCF 14. It currently seats 23,171 people.

NOTES: Since Thereisnogodistan County Community College is a small college, the team will not have as many reserves as they would like, and therefore injuries are very much not good for the team. An injury might force a safety to become a temporary quarterback, and such cross-position training is not very popular within Abanhfleft's sporting systems. Also, Kelly Profit will be the first female to ever play in Thereisnogodistan's American football program, and she will play as quarterback for the Atheists, replacing the graduating Harrison Aumann.

Roadrunners win opening game of season

Aprilian times -- With the college football season finally starting many saints wondered what the UAA Roadrunners would do to win. During the offseason after last year's embarassing season on offense, Atheletic Director Dylon Saladino "suggested" to coach Eli to fire the IC and get a new one to revamp the offense. Thomas Morton was hired as the new offensive coordinator. In an interview Morton told ESPN sports analysts that he believed the offense had a lot of talent after watching last year's film and were very capable of turning the offense around. He did not give details of how he would do it until two days before the season opener where he said, "The offense looked a lot better whenever they were quick, paced, and had a sense of urgency. I plan to take advantage of that this year by using a no huddle offense."

Well it certainly seemed to work this week. The Roadrunners won their season opener 23-10 against Cumhact National College. The offense seemed more efficient than last year but did not execute many of their plays very well. Head Coach Eli Lewellyn took note of this as well stating "There were too many penalties against us. Uh, we had like what 7 for 55 yards? Three of them for false starts, two for illegal motion in the backfield, two for holding. The score would have been more than 23-10 if we weren't as sloppy. I plan to make sure we fix this problem this week while I'll let Morton continue to go over the plays with them."

When Coach Eli was asked about the defense and how they did he praised them saying, "they were physical, aggressive, thinking about every detail on the fly, we were gap sound. Honestly they just did what they were coached to do and i'm proud of them for that. I told the defense during practice last week that if they just do what they were coached to do such as reading their keys, contain the edge, use moves to get off blocks, they would do very well and they did." For a team that also was bad on defense last year this was a big step forward, but can they continue to take those steps on both sides of the ball? Their next opponent, Army academy, also won their first game 20-17. We are expecting it to be a tough ball game.

Throughout the rest of the conference, Army academy won 20-17 against Leopard Central University while Vietussia Academy demolished Republica's Naval Academy 3-46.

Here are the standings for the Celestia conference:

# Celestia Conference Pld W L PF PA PD

Fusiliers defeat Stoltz University
The University of Konigsberg Fusiliers defeated Stoltz University, 16-0, in front of a crowd of 50,465 at Buckley Stadium. Quarterback Daniel Prescott threw for 247 yards in this game and connected with WR Heinrich Norbert for a touchdown in the first quarter, while RB Cal Gerig muscled through Stoltz's goal-line stand in the third quarter for the team's second touchdown. On a blitz play in the fourth quarter, SS Justin Warren managed to force a safety, bringing up the final score of 16-0.
Coach Otto Sheinfeld was very pleased with the team's performance in the game, saying that "It was obvious that the whole team had been preparing for this moment for the entire offseason. We didn't let up after winning the Valorian national championship, and it paid off today. The defense performed particularly well, managing to stop Stoltz from ever scoring, while our offense managed to keep constant pressure on the field." Eberhardt, the Fusiliers' offensive coordinator, was also pleased with the team's performance and said that the time spent watching film of Stoltz's defense clearly paid off.
Next week, the Fusiliers are facing the University of Westshire in their first away game of the season. While Westshire lost their first game, they are not to be underestimated. We're sure the Fusiliers will be practicing hard getting ready for that game. - VCD

Our Team

Part Two

It’s game one of the domestic season. Yes, the domestic season. For some reason that I don’t know, the school has decided that they want to play against foreign teams this season, meaning that we’ll play double the normal number of games and the national championship will actually be at a midway point in the season instead of at the end. Some of us are happy about a chance to prove ourselves to foreigners. Others think the season is long enough as it is and don’t want to play more games. Personally, I think it is what it is. If we have to play double the games, I’ll do it and keep playing my best.

But for now, we’re playing our out of conference domestic rival. North Shore University. We fucking hate these guys, because all of them are arrogant pricks. They’re the liberal arts school that talks shit about us because we’re a giant research university, and they love to act like they’re better because their school is smaller. And they also named their school North Shore, despite our team coming from North Coast. Everyone sees it as a slight on us, as if they’re saying that they’re the university of North Coast instead of us. They may talk more shit than any of our out of conference rivals, but we still own them on the football field.

North Shore versus Mount Maris is a game that everyone will be watching, and it’s one that we don’t need to get ourselves pumped up to play in. The occasion does a good enough job of getting our adrenaline flowing, we don’t have to do a thing. I can sense that as we lace up our pads and pull on the black jerseys we use for big night games. I put on my helmet, and the room around me darkens ever so slightly because of the smoke colored visor that I’m wearing.

I’m about to walk to the front of the room where some of the team is getting ready to head out, but Cooper Biro stops me first. The lengthy receiver puts a hand on my shoulder, standing next to me and pausing before he talks. “You okay to play, Drago? I know you say you are, but are you really?” he asks. “I know you haven’t been taking the end of last season well. Don’t tell him I told you, but coach says that you didn’t turn the page like the rest of us.”

“I haven’t,” I shrug. “But the one thing you need to know about me, Coop, is that it doesn’t matter if I’m okay. I can always get myself up to play, no matter how I’m feeling. I’ll be fine out there.”

“Fine enough to get me the ball?” asked Cooper, taking a step forward and looking over his shoulder. “Kidding… I just hope the pressure doesn’t get to you out there. You know how big of a game this is.”

I chuckle and strap on my gloves, following him towards the others that are leaving. “It’s not gonna get to me. Believe me, I want to beat these pricks more than anybody here. You should go focus on coach and make sure he’s ready, because I’m more ready than he is.”

“I hope you mean it,” Cooper says, and I push my way through the crowd of players to lead the team out. Everyone is gathering near the front of the tunnel by now, and I stand in front of them and decide to get them pumped up a bit.

“Before you go out there, remember that these sons of bitches actually call themselves the college team of Greater Maris. That’s crazy! They bought a billboard downtown and they run commercials all the time saying that. Those fuckers can’t draw more than twenty thousand, we bring a hundred thousand plus for every game when we’re at home! Are you all going to let them get away with claiming to represent our city?” I ask, pacing back and forth. I get in the face of Aleix Fuller, placing my hands on his helmet and knocking heads with him.

“Hell no!” he shouts, slapping me on the pads.

“HELL NO!” the team repeats, and I turn and start running out to the field. We may be on the road, but our band traveled with us and they’re still by the front row of the sideline, jumping and playing our entrance song: Enter Sandman. Five or six thousand of our fans are here too, jumping up and down as we come out and take a lap around the field before filling into our sideline area and waiting for North Shore.

“Taking the field now, your North Shore Waves!” says the stadium announcer, and the lights dim and focus on the middle of the field as our rivals in a darker shade of blue come running out to fireworks and smoke. They’re pumped up for this game, and I can’t wait for it to finally get started.

“They’re pretty excited for a team that’s going to lose,” I mutter to Carlo Foster, who slaps me on the back.

“Don’t count your eggs before they hatch,” he shrugs, and once the band plays the anthem, we run out onto the field. The captains all shake hands, but there’s still some trash talk flying between us.

“Try not to have a repeat of the end of last season, eh?” says their running back, and I slap him on the side of the helmet and lean into him.

“You’re not in a position to talk about last season,” I tell him, and I’m right considering that they couldn’t finish with a winning record last year. “Let’s settle this on the field.”

We all head to our own sidelines, and it’s game time. Finally, it’s my chance for redemption. The fans will forget about earlier if I dominate this season, and this is my first chance. I’m going to play this game like it’s my last.

=====

Going into the fourth quarter, we found ourselves down 21-7. North Shore has had us on the ropes all night despite our much higher preseason ranking, and the pass protection hasn’t been that great. Our pass rush has been lights out, but the secondary has been burned a few times for easy scores. I’ve been hit a lot of times this game, but their QB has been getting slammed too. To make things more complicated, it started raining at halftime and the field is getting pretty muddy.

I’m confident that I can still win the game for my team. On the current drive, we’re set up at the fifty yard line and North Shore is showing blitz again. They’re trying to exploit the weak pass protection on my blind side, but if I can get the ball to the flank quick enough, it will easily be a big gain. I step out of the pocket and point out the adjustment I’m making to everyone. “River, river!” I shout, slapping the side of my helmet also to give the rest of the code.

I step back into the pocket and back up into shotgun position. “Thunder! Thunder! Set! Go!” I shout, and Carlo snaps the ball and dives forward to cut block the defensive tackle that’s trying to set up a stunt play with the blitzing linebacker. Despite the stunt play getting broken up by Carlo and Chaz, the cornerback is still flying towards me. I take a hop to the side and Rui picks up the blitzing corner, pushing him off of his path and allowing me to step up to hurl the ball far downfield to Aleix Fuller. The safety had come down to QB spy, but didn’t realize that I would escape the blitz and chuck the ball into the spot that he was supposed to be covering.

He started to run back towards Fuller, but two things stopped him. One, Aleix is fast. Faster than any other Super Twelve receiver in my opinion. There’s no catching him when he gets going. And second, nobody can cover that much ground faster than the ball. Aleix caught the ball in his stride and the lone safety turned around and fell on his back as he tried to make a knock down play. There was nobody left in range to catch Aleix, and he ran the ball all the way into the end zone. We’ve got ourselves a game again, and our traveling crowd is making all the noise now.

I run downfield to Aleix and show my strength by lifting him up. “That’s what I’m fucking talking about!” I shout, and the rest of the offense runs over to us as Aleix jumps down and rips his helmet of. We move to the sideline and watch the next kickoff, and we can all tell that the momentum is on our side.

The next time we got the ball back, however, we went three and out. Lewis Ite got stopped behind the line for a loss when they ran a run blitz. I threw a mid ranged outside pass to Cooper for a six yard pick up, setting up a third and four. Lewis ran off tackle and saw no opening, and so he reversed field and ran behind the line before being stopped one yard short of the first down marker. I’m frustrated as I start walking to the sideline, and I take off my helmet and angrily toss it aside as I approach the bench. “Why aren’t you giving me a chance to tie the game for us?” I ask Irwin Browne, our offensive coordinator. “Lewis is clearly exhausted and Shef is injured. You need to put the ball in my hands.”

“That doesn’t fit the game plan right now. We need to hit them in their weak spots. Their pass rush means that it’s more effective to target them from the ground,” Irwin says, and I throw my arms in the air in frustration. “You’ll get your chances.”

“Not if we go three and out again after you give me a single play to work with,” I snap, watching as Eke Kuhn bursts around the edge and lowers his helmet into the shoulder of the opposing quarterback, driving him into the ground brutally and nearly knocking the poor lad out. It’s third and long. I put my helmet back on and look back to Irwin. “Just give me the offense for this drive. Gimme one of the spread plays that I can change and shift around each play. I proved last season that I can manage it.”

There’s a look of contemplation on his face, and then he flips through his binder of plays and points to the series that he wants me to use. “Got it,” I say, and turn to the field as North Shore’s offense is setting up for third and sixteen. They go four verticals, and their QB quickly makes a throw downfield that’s knocked down by Julian Preus. Fourth down. North Shore punts, and it’s time for me to come out and tie the game. We huddle up, and I call the full play. “Flex wide, h motion left, six hundred, x post, y flanker, z jet, h flat, hard on three. Break!”

We line up and I look around and scan the defense with my eyes. “Sixty’s the mic!” announced Carlo, pointing out the safety coming down to blitz next to the linebackers. I notice that and point to Cooper, thinking I can get a big gain similar to the one from the touchdown.

“Jet, jet, jet!” I shout, waving towards downfield to get my point across. He nods in acknowledgement, and the defense starts to adjust. I clap three times to snap the ball first. The blitz is on again, but the offensive line holds just long enough for me to throw a quick pass down the seam to Cooper, who spins around to catch it. He’s in the open field, so he spins out of a tackle and runs thirty five yards downfield before being caught by the second safety.

I rush everyone to the line for the next play, and switch to a running play. I snap the ball to Lewis, who catches the defense off guard for a ten yard gain. We have them on the ropes now, and I look to the sideline and see that Irwin wants us to go four verticals for the next play. I take another shot downfield at Cooper, and he picks up twenty yards. We’re coming closer and closer to the end zone and we take a break from the no huddle offensive scheme to plan our next plays.

It only takes us seven more plays to reach the goal line. I take a snap from the I formation and pretend to throw to Cooper before spinning around and finding Gerard on the other side, open in the flat. He runs it in for a score, and we’re tied. Everyone in the stadium is getting increasingly nervous, and I see some of the rival students angrily shouting at their defense to do better. When their next drive starts, they pick up a first down on the first pass but then stall.

They can't contain Kuhn, who bursts around the edge and then spins back inside to wrap up the QB for a sack. Our crowd roars, and the down is now second and fourteen. Maneul is running up and down the sideline and waving to the defense to get into position again after North Shore tried to catch us off guard by rushing to the line quickly. He’s dialing up another blitz, and as the QB takes two steps back after receiving the snap, Jan Dokken came rushing through the gap and slammed into him, forcing a fumble with six minutes left.

“It’s your turn now,” Jan says, running back to the sideline and slapping my helmet. I walk out and look to the sideline to see which play Irwin is calling, using picture boards. He wants a series of runs, and we set up in ace formation and pick up twenty yards on four straight runs with Lewis Ite and Inko Sheffield.

I look again to the sideline, and see that after all these runs, I’m going to get my chance to win the game. The play is out of the shotgun spread formation, and I take my place behind the center and call for the snap before pretending to hand off the ball to Ite and stepping back and looking for Osvaldo. He’s covered, and the blitz is on, so I step to the side and try to buy time.

“Throw,” says a voice, one I haven’t heard since last season. It doesn’t look like a situation where I should throw, but the voice isn’t often wrong.

I throw the ball high, and he turns around and catches it as he falls out of the back of the end zone for a score. We now lead 28-21. I don’t celebrate, cheer, or anything. I just stand there and watch the touchdown on the video board, like I’ve been here and done this before. When the kicking team comes out, I walk back to the sideline and fist bump all of my receivers and linemen, one by one. Rori offers me a high five, but I keep moving and walk past him as if he’s not there. I take my seat at the middle of the bench and watch as we score the extra point and kick off.

Since our defensive front has been so good in this game, I expect us to get another three and out to give us the ball back and let us run the clock out, but this time, with their backs to the wall, North Shore is competing fiercely. They’re running out of the I formation a lot and they’re also catching us with play action passes. Soon enough, they’re on the goal line and they’re trying to run it in. The ball is snapped but Ky rushes forward and hits the running back in the backfield. Second down.

Their quarterback switches the formation to pistol and tries to run a post play with his number two receiver, but Melo knocks down the ball to break up the play and force third down. There’s only a few minutes left in the game, and everyone in the stadium is on their feet. They come back out in shotgun, and there’s five wide receivers. The QB takes the snap and looks for a receiver to run the ball in from the flat, but before he can throw, Ky wraps him up and drives him into the ground, forcing another fumble in the process.

He dives on it, and we all know that the game is over. We’ve narrowly escaped North Shore, 28-21. I’ve also proved my worth as the starting quarterback, and I know that there’s no way coach can bench me for Ryan Kada now. “I told you I was ready,” I say to Cooper, following the rest of the team over to our band. “You didn’t believe me, coach didn’t believe me, these fans didn’t believe me… But I’m back to my old form. You better believe I’m going to keep playing this way.”

=====

I’m not allowed to go to the after party in town with the others. Mike Colquitt, the member of the staff who works with coach to keep us out of trouble, doesn’t think it’s a good look for me as a starting quarterback who has a lot of press attention on him and just returned. He says I should wait before partying, and that’s got me pissed off as I step out of the bus and approach the hotel that we’re staying at in North Shore. “It’s not fair that you get to go out and party, as the team’s leading receiver, but I’m the quarterback and I have to stay at the hotel,” I snap at Aleix, taking my frustration out by venting to him. “I think this is just because coach doesn’t like me. I mean, he didn’t make any of our other stars stay here. This is fucking bullshit.”

“Don’t you hate North Shore, anyway? Why would you want to party here?” asks Aleix, shaking his braids out of his face to look me in the eye.

“Because I’m the only Mount Maris quarterback ever to not have a girlfriend,” I mutter, and I realize that that’s been something that has been bothering me for months. “You know why? Because you guys get to spend way more time socializing than I do. And I don’t even get credit for making sacrifices like this.”

“That’s what this is about? Dude, you haven’t even tried to get one. You don’t need to party all the time to put yourself out there. Why don’t you go chat up that drum major that you’re always looking at?” he asks, and he’s right. I haven’t exactly put myself out there, but part of the reason why is because the staff are determined to make me keep a low profile.

“I don’t even know her name,” I reply. “And quiet down, she’s right there,” I add. She’s in the coffee shop next to the main lobby, still in full uniform as she’s ordering something with a few of her bandmates.

“For a guy who’s fine playing in front of a hundred thousand people, you sure are timid,” Aleix says, and then he grabs me by the arm and starts pulling me towards the coffee shop. “Come on. If I help you get a date, will you stop acting like we lost?”

“Maybe…”

I don’t really have a say in the matter, because Aleix is quite strong. He pulls me to the group of band members that are waiting for their order, and gets their attention while holding onto my arm. “Hello everyone, I have someone to introduce you to. Well, ya’ll know Drago already. He might be a brave quarterback on the field but he’s pretty shy and I’m trying to get him to talk to you.”

My face is burning bright red right now. I’m not shy, I’m introverted. But most people don’t know the difference. “Um, hi? I’m Drago,” I say awkwardly. If there’s one thing I hate, it’s being put on the spot. “I kind of wanted to know what your name was…?”

“Which one of us are you talking to?” asks one of the band guys, and my face turns more red. I point to the drum major, a tall blonde who looks like she’d be playing sports if she wasn’t in the band.

She just chuckles at me, and smiles. “I’m Caris. It’s nice to actually meet you, after seeing you play so many times. Just don’t grab my baton again, ‘kay?”

She’s talking about the time last season when I threw the game winning touchdown against Avgaria Tech in overtime, and then ran to the band and took her baton and started conducting our fight song. I blush more when I remember. “Er, yeah. I won’t do that again-”

“Hey, Drago has something he wants to ask you,” Aleix says, cutting me off. I can’t tell if he actually wants to help me, or if he just wants to see me get more and more embarrassed.

“Shoot,” says Caris, looking me right in the eye. I hate it when people do that, and I instinctively take a step backwards.

“Well, you know, Rori won’t let me go out partying with the rest of the team, so I was thinking-”

“He wants to go on a date with you instead,” Aleix says, finishing my sentence. I glare at him, and the band members laugh and start whispering with each other.

“Bruh, I’m not throwing you the ball next week,” I hiss at Aleix, who just punches me in the arm and pushes me forward again before I can run. I’m getting ready to walk away if Caris says no, and I turn and see Harper standing in the lobby doorway. I can’t read her expression. She’s looking between me and Caris and Aleix and then she looks to me again and walks past us to the elevator.

“Sure,” Caris says, to my surprise. “Lemme get changed out of this uniform, alright?”

Their order is ready at that moment too, and I nod and use that as an excuse to run to the elevator and slide inside before the doors can close. “Are you mad at me?” I ask Harper, who lights a cigarette and blows the smoke directly into my face.

“Nah. I’m just kind of disappointed.”

I sigh. The life of a star quarterback is harder than it looks on TV, for sure.

Vikings drop first game of season to Ramusok

Ramusok receiver Seth Greenman eludes linebacker Norris Dyak in the Dragons' 20-14 win over upstart GSU.

Since Galturin State University finally starting caring about their football program on the world stage, this was the first game for the Vikings internationally, against a formidable foe in Cosumar's Ramusok Capital University. The Vikings played well, but came up just short, losing 20-14. Josh Ellison started the first game of the season, and didn't look out of place in his first time in international competition, completing 24 of 35 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns, with just one interception in the third quarter and another on a Hail Mary pass with eleven seconds left. "We thought Ellison played well for his first game out, and he had some excellent awareness during our final drive down the field, and we just came up short," praised Vikings head coach Dave Sanders. Also interesting was the Vikings' committee approach to their backfield; Jonathan Milby had 89 yards rushing, Jan Bardsley 74 and Jerome Southland 21. None of the trio scored, and the backfield in the Vikings' next game at home against Stoneshore College will be one to watch.

In the first quarter, the teams just felt each other out, without many huge plays, which was expected to happen in the season opener for both teams. The two quarterbacks looked sharp, but the Vikings had a slight edge, as their spread offense against the Dragons' 4-3 defense allowed the wide receivers, particularly rookie wideout Oskar Bello, to get open. Bello, who plays the designated deep option on most plays in practice, had 121 yards and a touchdown for a great start to his college career. "We're liking what we see from Oskar, and he has that explosive speed to be able to get himself some separation on the quarterback," remarked Sanders. Late in the first quarter, though, the Dragons struck first. On a second-and-seven at the Vikings 18-yard line, Taron Thalman found Seth Greenman on an outside play for a Dragons' touchdown. On the very next play, though, Vikings return specialist Darryl Eveland showed off his skills:

"The kickoff from Alan Highsmith is up in the air, 7-0 Dragons. The ball comes down to Eveland at the Vikings 13, and he's going to try to return this one. Eveland goes down the left side of the field, looking for a window, fakes and he's still going! Up to the Dragons 35 now, Eveland still with the ball, and a great juke move on Thorin Cheruffin. Eveland still going, to midfield, being chased by Curinho down the sideline! Finally Curinho will catch up and push Darryl Eveland out of bounds, but a great 48-yard return effort puts the Vikings with a short field!"

Five plays later, the Vikings managed to score their first-ever touchdown since the program's revamp, as Josh Ellison found tight end Joan Caraveo for an 8-yard strike inside the end zone. During the second quarter, the game turned into a defensive battle, as the two teams combined for five sacks during this time. Also, Josh Ellison threw his only interception of the game, a pick by Alex Na'Tomis at the Vikings 38. Fortunately, the Vikings defense stood tall and limited the Dragons to a field goal. At the half, the score was 10-7 Dragons.

After getting the ball back to start the third quarter, the Vikings marched back down the field, but the drive stalled from about thirty yards out, and this was where disaster struck. Aubrey Webb was set to attempt a 42-yard field goal attempt that would have tied the game, but the field goal was blocked. The Dragons did not waste this opportunity, launching a time-killing, 11-play, 64-yard drive that took over six minutes off the clock and ended in a rushing touchdown for Nic Perrantes from the Vikings 12-yard line. Galturin State was not broken, though. Going into the fourth quarter with a renewed drive, they quickly got from their own 13-yard line to the middle of the field in a relatively quick 2:31 and five plays. After a series of bad penalties, though, the Vikings were left at fourth-and-nine on their own 40-yard line. However, the Vikings called a fake punt, and punter Irvin Jenkins converted a 24-yard desperation toss to keep the drive alive. From there, Oskar Bello went to work:

"Vikings at the Ramusok 38, second and five. Ellison takes the snap from the shotgun, looking for a target. He evades a tackler and he's going to go deep, now...TOUCHDOWN BELLO! Oskar Bello went deep and made a beautiful catch on Josh Ellison's long bomb to pull the Vikings to within three!"

With three minutes left in the game, Alan Highsmith kicked another field goal for the Dragons. Down by six points and needing a touchdown to get to overtime, the Vikings had troubles getting out of their own end, being forced to third down twice inside their own 30 alone. But both times they bounced back and recovered. However, with just eleven seconds left in the game and the Vikings still 47 yards away, the only option was a Hail Mary pass:

"Vikings lined up here at the line of scrimmage. They've given Cosumar quite a scare here and might be able to pull it off here. 47 yards is certainly within Ellison's reach - we saw him hit 38 earlier on the Bello catch. Now the snap is taken back to Ellison, four wideouts and Milby going straight down the field. Ellison's going to get set, here comes the pass, up in the air...picked off by Curinho for the Dragons!"

However, the game wasn't quite over yet, as a safety would still give the Vikings a second chance. But a straight dive play by Perrantes went without incident, and the game ended with Ramusok taking a tight 20-14 victory that certainly could have gone to the Vikings. "We came really close there, but now we can go home and prepare for Stoneshore," commented Sanders.

The Vikings next play Stoneshore College in Galturin. The Bruins took a close 10-7 victory over Kalalau's Harbor College.

Castle Daily
The best blog for Castle University Students

The strange case of Hazel Minett

Castle has always been kind of a strange place. By strange, we mean unusual things happen here more than they do in, say, Maris or Avgaria or Janford. Sometimes they’re interesting, sometimes they’re annoying, but this time, the strange event is something that has a lot of students scared. Right around the time the semester is starting up, we have a disappearance. Castle Daily is looking into and investigating it, and we’ll be updating you along the way as we try to find more information and the true details.

The student in question is Hazel Minett. She’s a junior, and she was studying at the magic school. She was very well known around the magic campus and was well liked too, having more friends than anyone else there and getting good grades. Or at least, she was very popular until the last couple of weeks before she disappeared completely from the campus without a trace. Our investigative team talked to her best friend, Mica Caselli, and Mica had this to say:

“Yeah, she was definitely more secretive before she went missing. She used to go out and party all the time, or she would always be hanging out with two or three friends. She was that kind of person that was really fun and entertaining to hang out with, and she always had a group of friends around her. But recently she didn’t want to hang out, with me or with her other close friends, and she also went on less dates with her boyfriend and focused more on her studying. We all thought that she just wanted to get her grades up and so we didn’t bother her about it much, but in hindsight, I think something is wrong.”

We asked Mica if she thought that Hazel and her had a falling out, but she was unsure about this:

“I don’t know. She’s not the passive aggressive type, I don’t think she would ditch me as a friend this way. I think if she had a problem with me, she would have approached me and said something about it. And it wasn’t just me that she talked with less, she also did the same thing to our other friends and to her boyfriend, Johan Abate. Then again, she seemed like she was feeling more anxious every day, and maybe she felt a lot of pressure on her because of having so many friends. I wouldn’t blame her if she was withdrawing because she felt overwhelmed.”

Lastly, we asked her about the last time she saw Hazel:

“Me, Hazel, Johan, Jace Coiro, three of our other friends, and Jace’s girlfriend were at this bar on Park Street, called Hornet Bait. She was feeling tense and she was kinda sad, so me and Johan got together to invite her out and cheer her up. She wasn’t going to come but I managed to convince her to head over after the football team finished an evening practice, and she was having a good time and for a bit, it felt like old times. We all had a few beers and we were eating and laughing when she looked down at her phone and then said she had to go.

Johan offered to walk with her because it was dark and she was drunk, but she said that she could handle herself and she left. She took her backpack from my car and walked away, and we all thought she was going back to her dorms or to one of the classrooms at the magic school to work on a project or something… It wasn’t until the next day that we realized she was gone. Me and her always walk to class together if we have classes at the same time, but when I showed up to find her, she wasn’t in her room. Her roommate, this girl named Kaiya, was looking for her too and found that her room was exactly the same as it was before she left, except a few things were different, like her laptop was missing. She didn’t answer any calls or texts, and that was the first time we realized that something was really wrong here.”

Our investigative team is looking at the situation and is approaching others who knew Hazel, to figure out more about her disappearance. We’ve also talked with the police, but they’re just as in the dark about this as we are. Her boyfriend, Johan Abate, has denied an interview, but we were able to talk briefly with her roommate, Kaiya Baley. This is what Kaiya had to say about Hazel’s last few weeks on campus:

“She was acting weird as fuck. She used to be joined at the hip with her best friend, Mica, but recently I would come back and find her sitting by herself in our room, sometimes studying and sometimes just meditating. She was a member of Blue Fjordham, but she didn’t do much with them in the last few weeks. I think she had a falling out with the Student Executive of the order, Connor Verde. They had a few arguments that I overheard, and I didn’t know what they were about, but she started acting different soon after those arguments. I really miss her, and I hope she comes back soon from wherever she is. I don’t know where that might be, but somehow, I get the feeling that it’s connected to Blue Fjordham and maybe with one of her friends.”

The investigators are currently trying to get interviews with Jace Coiro and the rest of the students who were with Hazel on the night that she disappeared. Our next article will have more interviews, and we’ll try to trace her steps backwards to see more clues into her disappearance. If you have any information, feel free to contact us by email or meet up with any of our investigators.

Until then, stay safe everyone.

CU opens Mineral Conference play with a win, and defense pitches shutout

“There’s a lot of identities on this team. We’ve got boys from the Maris coast, from the Big A, from the island of Janford, from right here in Castle, from Glenham, and from every other city in Redvale. We usually celebrate our diversity and say that it gives us an edge because we can take from everybody’s style and form our own, and we always say that once you play for Castle, you’re part of a family that doesn’t care where you’re from. But tonight, where we’re from matters. We’re from Redvale, and the other team isn’t. Go out there and do our country proud tonight. Show the rest of the world how we play football in the Valley.”

That was the end of the speech that coach Francis Allan gave his team before they went out and achieved a 24-0 shutout in their first Mineral Conference game. What he said resonated with the team, and they sure played like they wanted to show everyone else what Redvali football looks like. We came out strong and finished strong, making a statement to the rest of the conference when our defense recorded a shutout and our offense played good ol fashioned smash mouth football. Here’s our recap of the game versus Westshire.

For the first time, the captains that came onto the field for CU for the coin toss were Johan Abate, Joker Steele, Kyle Stratton, and Arielle Russey. Stratton was a captain last season, but Abate, Steele, and Russey are new to the role. Most notably, this is a rare year where the quarterback isn’t a captain. Amalie Russey hasn’t earned the trust yet that her sister already has, and the odds are especially stacked against her as a female, whether that’s fair or not. Castle won the coin toss and chose to take the second half kickoff and give their defense a chance to shine.

That defense didn’t disappoint. The opening play of the game was a sack by Kyle Stratton, who blitzed the A gap and rolled inside around the left guard to get to the quarterback, wrapping him up and taking him to the ground. Stratton, who came out wearing his eye black as war paint, lived up to his intimidating reputation in this game, starting at the beginning. On the next play, Joker Steele stepped up and stopped the running back at the line, stuffing an outside run that could have went for a first down if he didn’t step in.

Third down was when the defense really showed up. Westshire’s quarterback had a decent amount of time in the pocket and looked downfield to pick up a long first down, but stared down his receiver too much and allowed everyone to see where he was about to throw the ball. While Arielle Russey cut off the angle of the deep receiver and jammed him to the outside, Jean Michel Pierre came down and picked off the pass, running with it for twelve yards before being dragged down by a receiver. The first drive of the season ended with Castle getting the ball via interception, meaning that maybe this secondary isn’t as bad as we thought.

The offense got to work right away, with four straight rushes out of the veer formation. The first rush of the game was an option, where Russey kept the ball and went for seventeen yards to the right side. On the second and third, Johan Abate picked up six yards total. On the fourth rush, Jace Coiro broke through the middle and picked up a gain of ten to set up a goal line situation for the Hornets. Coiro nearly trucked over a linebacker to break through for a touchdown, but lost that matchup and was stopped at the line.

On the play afterwards, Russey faked an option run to Abate and then tossed the ball on a short pass outside to Bane Scott, who easily walked into the end zone for a touchdown to put the Hornets up 7-0 on their first drive. Scott caught the ball one yard away and trucked his way in for the touchdown, and then celebrated by spiking the ball into the stands. If this team is going to have any success, Bane is going to have to keep his form, as he’s easily the number one receiving option and he’s someone who Amalie Russey will have to lean on as a new quarterback.

The next drive saw Westshire come further, but they stalled out as soon as they passed the fifty yardline. Their running back tried to bounce a negative gain to the outside to turn it into a positive, but was absolutely rocked by Marquis Arana, who knocked him to his back and dramatically stepped over him in celebration. That forced a third down, and Westshire came out in shotgun spread and nearly picked up a first down on the slant, but Javier Hathaway reached the quarterback before he could throw and took him down to force fourth down and a punt.
Castle’s offense wasn’t much better on the next drive. On the first play, Jace Coiro ripped off a twenty eight yard off tackle run, but then the offense stalled. Amalie Russey tried to throw to Scott over his shoulder, but he didn’t turn quick enough and had a rare drop. Second down as an Abate run that was stuffed. On third down, Russey misread the option and kept the ball before retreating into the backfield and being sacked for a ten yard loss to end the drive.

Nothing else happened that was of note until after halftime, when Castle received the opening kickoff and Heath Silvas returned it for fifty yards from the one yard line. Russey then went on a hot streak and completed seven straight passes, four of them going to Bane Scott for a total of thirty five yards, two of them going to Ibrahim Marks-Kagawa for a total of fifteen, and one going to Jimmi Rossi for five. Coordinator Xavier Pierce then caught Westshire off guard by coming out in shotgun formation and rushing the ball with Jace Coiro, who burst outside and ran the ball to the goal line before being hit and knocked out of bounds.

Coiro should have gotten a touchdown earlier and was robbed of one, but finally got his score after the team came out in I formation and let him punch the ball in after juking from the A to the B gap. The star back was very pumped up afterwards, and showed off his chemistry with Amalie Russey with a new and elaborate secret handshake that the two invented. The scoreline may be 14-0, but coach Allan never took his foot off of the gas.

Five minutes later, Westshire tried to go for a deep pass but the defense came up big again when Jean Michel Pierre got his second interception of the game and ran it back thirty yards to set up a red zone chance. Johan Abate ran for five yards and Pierce called a pass on the second play of the series, but Amalie Russey finally made a rookie mistake. She played a backwards pass to avoid being sacked by a blitzing safety, and when Jace Coiro dropped it, Westshire scooped it up and started running with it. It would have been a score if Coiro didn’t use his electric speed to chase down the linebacker and take him down at the forty yard line.

There was no more scoring until the fourth quarter. There was a Castle field goal at the beginning of the quarter, and they added on a touchdown with five minutes left to seal the win. Castle killed Westshire with the veer formation for most of the game, and they used it again when Amalie Russey rushed for thirty five yards after being left open on an option run. When the team was at the goal line, she looked for Bane Scott before faking the pass to him and running up the middle and diving over Jax Pace to score a touchdown by herself. There was no doubt that the Fighting Hornets would walk away from this game with a win.

Looking forward, our defense is even better than we expected, and we’re tied for first so far with Mount Maris, our fellow Redvali conference opponent. Mount Maris is also the next team that we’re playing, and the atmosphere should be absolutely incredible for the all-Redvali matchup next week. Here’s what Francis Allan said about our performance and about the next game:

“We did everything right this week, but the opposition wasn’t the best and Westshire is not Mount Maris. I have a hell of a lot of respect for Maris and what they’ve been able to do in the Super Twelve, and in Redvale in general, and we’re going to have to make sure we don’t let them run away with the game early if we start slowly again like we did this week. I think Amalie Russey and Kyle Stratton have it in them to lead us on both sides of the ball and I think our other players like Bane, Joker, Marquis, Jace, and Arielle are all ready to handle the pressure of playing against Maris. For the rest of the conference, it might be just another game, but to us, playing the Friars is quite special. We’re going to enjoy doing it on the international stage, regardless of the result.”

Xavier Pierce had some comments about the offense:

“We’ve lost a lot of talent recently on offense, but I like the way we bounced back. More specifically, I like our running game. Amalie had much to be desired despite her hot streaks, but Jace Coiro was exceptional and Johan Abate was solid even if he didn’t reach his usual standard. We’re going to work on getting her into the passing game more against Maris and we're leaning towards giving Jace most of the snaps because of his form.”

Next week, our Fighting Hornets will play at the Arena of Light in front of one hundred and thirty thousand people, against the famous Mount Maris Friars. It's a matchup you can't afford to miss, and we’ll have full pre and post game articles on it and interviews from the players and staff. They've had our number at the Arena of Light historically, but here's to hoping that the gods smile on us and let us steal a road victory in our first matchup against them in a new conference.

RECRUITING WATCH, WEEK ONE
Article by Maurice Endo, football stats expert

The top high school recruits in Redvale were out in force in the first week of high school football, as several of them put on early great performances. Maris Coastal came in as the highest ranked team in the preseason and they defended that crown with a 73-0 demolition of their out of town rivals, Avgaria South Side. Coastal beat South Side four of the last five years, but South Side is coming off a major upset from last season and Coastal didn't let that happen again.

The top player from Coastal is their quarterback, the number one recruit in the country. Quinn Iseya has been dominant through his four years as a starter there, and threw for four hundred yards in three quarters during the blowout, including three passing touchdowns and two rushing ones. Iseya is a dual threat in the mold of most of the other top Super Twelve quarterbacks, but comes from a pro style offense and has the flexibility to switch between running and passing styles. His accuracy leaves a lot to be desired, but he also has a cannon for an arm and has good physicality at 6’5. He hasn't made his commitment yet, but has scheduled visits so far with Mount Maris, Janford College, and Castle University.

The number two prospect is from just east of Maris, from North Bay High. The Seahawks were national champions last season, and nearly took an upset loss in their opener against Janford Central. They ended up winning 54-51 because of heroics from their main college prospect, halfback slash wide receiver Demarcus Toro. Toro rushed for two touchdowns early on, but his real skill showed when he lined up at wide receiver and caught a long touchdown on a fade route to give North Bay a last minute victory. He finished with two rushing touchdowns, two touchdown catches, and three hundred and fifty total yards.

The other big performance of the game came from Central’s main prospect, ranked number six in the country. Quarterback Amari Vargas is the top scrambler prospect, and ran for two hundred yards while passing for one hundred and thirty. He ran for touchdowns from the veer formation to take the lead, three times during that game before coming up short with an interception in the end. The performance was still very good, and Vargas has planned visits with Avgaria Tech, Castle, and Janford College. As he grew up a Tech fan, he's stated that he has a higher chance of going there, but also said he has an open mind to playing abroad.

The defensive prospect in the top five is Jasper Steele, the younger brother of Castle’s Joker Steele. Unlike his brother, he plays cornerback instead of linebacker, and is quite dominant at the position. He plays for Avgaria West Side, and they won their opening game 65-35 after he had two interceptions and a receiving touchdown. The 6’6 Steele can play on both sides of the ball, and he hasn't scheduled any visits yet but is expected to consider Mount Maris, who could use a receiver for the future and could also use future cornerbacks.

We’ll be the ones to update you as the best prospects continue to play, and as they continue their recruiting processes. It should be an interesting season with two teams from our country playing internationally now.

They're back, baby! Vulcans open with domination of Republica's Naval

Image
Shane Wolf gears up for a touchdown pass in the 2nd quarter.

Oh, they're back.

Vietussia Academy is back for their 3rd season in the NSCF, winning their opening game by a score of 46-3 over Republica's Naval Academy. It was a thrashing from the beginning as Vietussia nabbed a touchdown in just under a minute from the start of the game. It all went downhill for Republica from there. Vietussia's 4-3 defense dominated the Republica pass game, shutting down receivers and pressuring the quarterback. Mark Dyer ran circles around the Republica team, accounting for over 200 rushing yards in the game.

When asked about the game, coach Xavier Nogueras had the following to say: "Our team played lights out tonight. We shut them down on both sides of the ball and took the crowd out of the game. Hopefully, this will be a sign of our play style this year."

This season will be a bit different for Vietussia Academy. They now find themselves as the veterans of the conference after the sudden leaving of their Banijan rivals: Northern Moravica University and Loyola University. It is considered that Vietussia will likely run away with the conference, but as we've learned from the past, nothing is handed to you in the NSCF.

Vietussia will look to continue its dominance with a road game against Cumhact National College, a new team in the NSCF, which brings us to a new topic: the rise of newcomers in the NSCF's 15th season.

In this season, we see very few veteran teams coming back to play. This has allowed the chance for teams who are looking to make an impression on the NSCF a good chance to do so. This will also make the competition for the Pioneer Bowl very fierce as the playoff picture begins to come to focus over the next few weeks.

The Vietussian Inquisitor has released it's week one poll. It is as follows:

1. Utica University (1-0)
2. Stoneshore College (1-0)
3. Ramusok Capital University (1-0)
4. Universite St Croix (1-0)
5. Vietussia Academy (1-0)
6. Imperial Military Academy (1-0)
7. Thereisnogodistan Community College (1-0)
8. Harbor College (0-1)
9. Innusburg University (1-0)
10. Drawk Corps Academy (1-0)

That's it for this short sneak peek edition of the Vietussian Inquisitor. We hope you enjoyed it and will continue to read this column in the weeks to come.
