RW League: Hara leads Fish to title, foreign players make big impact this season
WEEKS TWELVE THROUGH SEVENTEEN
The five game stretch past week twelve was shaky for the Fish, but they managed to stay in first place through Sporting's inconsistencies and their own talent in attack. It started with a home match that should have been very easy, because it was against Bankers United, but somehow the Marisians ended up going down 2-0 inside of thirty minutes because of poor defending on set pieces. They conceded a direct free kick goal and a header from a corner, and would go into halftime down by two goals. They committed everything to attack and pounded away at the Bankers defense for the rest of the match, but they would only get two goals, and not the three they would need for a win. Sofia Cruze assisted Livia Hessenthaler for the first, and Klara Burnham took a shot off of a free kick deflection for the second, but Cruze would miss the extra time winner that could have given them three points instead of one.
They then had to visit Skybrough in the return leg of the always interesting Maris-Skybrough series, and they nearly went down early but were saved by Burnham deflecting Lisa Campoy's shot out of bounds. Then, eight minutes into the match, Cruze would get loose on the wing and Kylie Calderon would pass across the pitch to get her the ball in space, where she would feint a cut inside before firing from outside of the box to take the 1-0 lead. But Maris would take their foot off the gas late in the match, and they would pay for it when Justine Canales de Midvale got free of her marker and charged down the wing before playing the ball inside for Amanda Gallardo to trap and shoot for the tying goal in the seventy second minute. Despite the two draws in two matches, Shay Hara would make the needed adjustments for her team to take down Glenham by a score of 4-0, and Castle Ladies by a score of 3-1. While Callie Flores has been very strong in the back for FCML, they've had problems at the fullback position that showed in both draws and will need to be fixed for next season.
Sporting was the hottest team in the league, but they seem to have cooled off a bit. They'd play the Janford Roses at home and come out with a 2-1 loss after Tori Escelara's second half brace brought the Roses back from the dead late in the match. Like their rivals, they're more talented in the attack than in the back, and that could be seen when Escelara carved up their back line with inside runs on both goals. Escelara is one of the best athletes in the league, notably hitting a top speed of twenty one miles per hour while chasing down the ball on her second goal. A win over Elysia where Nya Murray notched her first hat trick to lead them to a 5-1 victory would put the Foresters back on track, but Wilson Tahiri's side just doesn't have the consistency to stay in the title race. After they drew with Glenham, 1-1, the Roses jumped past them for second place and took over their spot as the one team that can challenge Maris down the stretch at the end of the season.
Near the bottom of the table, several matchups have happened to decide what the bottom of the table looks like. Brigid Hale and Air Force are firmly in the mid table, unlike the men's team, and so even though some thought that they might be the ones going down, the real relegation battle is going to be between Glenham and Bankers United, the two lowest payrolls in the league and the two least qualified teams to stay up. But only one team can be relegated, and in week seventeen, the two bottom of the table teams faced off for the right to stay out of the relegation zone. The match was 0-0 for almost the entire time... Until the eighty eighth minute, which was when someone finally stepped up on the Glenham side. Nineteen year old attacking midfielder Juliana Demura got the ball after a deflected corner kick rolled out to the edge of the box, and she used her athleticism to cut towards the inside and place a shot towards the lower right corner that the keeper couldn't reach. The match ended 1-0 to Glenham, keeping them safe and putting their destiny in their own hands for the last three weeks of the season.
JADE CUP ROUND OF EIGHT
The round of eight in the Jade Cup kicked off with FC Maris taking on Skybrough, who shocked them with a draw not so long ago. Skybrough had home field advantage too again, and Lisa Campoy nearly got them off to an early lead again with a long shot from thirty yards out that went off of the crossbar and was recovered by Klara Burnham. This time, however, Maris got straight to the point on attack. Ten minutes in, Sofia Cruze chipped the ball over the top for Nat Casarine, who would shoot after her first touch of the ball to take the lead for her team. Skybrough, though, would equalize in minute number seventy six when Amanda Gallardo switched onto the smaller Callie Flores and waited for Tori Escelara's cross before knocking down the ball and sending it to the feet of Theodora Bojovic, who finished the chance. The match went into extra time, but it wouldn't go to penalties; Lorna Wilson passed to Marlene Corredor, who waited for Wilson to run forward before playing a through ball behind the Skybrough line for her, and she would take that chance and finish it in the hundredth minute to give the Fish a win after the scare.
Air Force Women also took on the Maris Black Knights in somewhat of an interesting matchup, because while Air Force hasn't done so great in their division and the Black Knights are very good in theirs, Brigid Hale is coming into the match with great form. Hale has carried the Robins by herself this season, and of course, she's the one who scored the clinching goal in the sixty fifth minute of the cup tie. While they defeated a good Rovers team, Knights didn't have enough in the tank to beat a second straight first division team.
Janford was drawn against the Elysia Blues, and they predictably rolled over the struggling side and won 5-0 behind Adelaide Swain's brace, Escelara's three assists, and Theodora Bojovic's late goal. Elysia did well to make it this far, but they couldn't compete against the attacking prowess of the Roses front line and their more profound tactical skill. In the only other match, Sporting Women's Nya Murray and Justice Pierce both had braces to give them a 4-2 victory over Castle United Ladies, who had a good run but aren't as skilled as their men's team is.

WEEK EIGHTEEN
The big occasion of the week was the second Derby of Redvale of the RW League season, with this one being held at a packed out Harbor Gate. It was definitely a heated affair, with a red card in the opening twenty minutes as Cora Blazen was sent off for a studs up sliding tackle on Annamarie Janzen-Hara, who found herself matched up against the attacking midfielder because of roaming positions as a libero. The matchup was more favorable than having a center back on her, and Blazen's response to the bad matchup was to try to send a message through the tackle. All that led to was Sporting playing most of the match down a player, and they responded poorly to the pressure. In the fortieth minute, Sofia Cruze made a run through the midfield section that would usually be filled by Blazen, and she chipped a shot over Dana Hutchins. The Fish doubled their lead immediately after halftime when Livia Hessenthaler pushed her way through the weak Sporting back four to grab yet another goal in her rookie season and go up 2-0. They wouldn't need to stay on the attack for the entire time; Sporting wouldn't be able to manage without Blazen, and the match would finish 2-0.
Glenham also faced FC Castle and likely secured a spot in the top division next season through the late 1-0 win. It unfolded almost identically to the win over Bankers United, with Juliana Demura heading in the eighty ninth minute winner for the Gs. Demura has only come onto the scene in the second half of the season, but has been the Gs best player since she made her senior debut. The lengthy attacking midfielder is a former gridiron player who had scholarship offers to play wide receiver for teams including Mount Maris, and that length of hers has made her a matchup nightmare for most defensive midfielders and shorter center backs. If Glenham stays up, it'll definitely be because of Demura's emergence, though it's unknown what her future with the club will be.
WEEKS NINETEEN AND TWENTY
In week nineteen, the big headline was Bankers United securing their relegation with a 3-0 loss to rivals Skybrough, who were happy to go on the road and send their rivals down a division. Glenham will stay safe, Air Force will stay up too, and the Bankers from Janford will be regrouping next season and spending the offseason wondering where everything went wrong. The club could be in free fall soon, with the ironic financial troubles that they've faced, and life in the second division should be tough for them. For the two or three clubs that were closely watching the relegation battle, however, it's a relief; Glenham will continue their long streak of staying up against the odds, and Elysia won't go down despite having a financial advantage over the other relegation clubs.
In week twenty, the final match of the season was a fitting one. FC Maris Ladies clinched the title with Sporting and Janford drawing in the past week, and all they had left was a local derby on the road against Maris Rovers. Bay Stadium was filled to the brim with 'traveling' FC Maris fans, and they'd celebrate their title win in their rival's house. It showed just how dominant they've been in this city in recent years, and historically. Their eventual win was 3-1, with Hessenthaler, Cruze, and Corredor scoring for the West Marisians and Katenka Sokolov scoring for the eastern side. This season was an unpredictable one where there were a lot of upsets and excitement, but in the end, Shay Hara's team came out on top, meeting their expectations and sending them back to the Globe Cup.
