The two coaches stared across the table at one another. In their faces was a look of disbelief. Neither could bring themselves to say anything.

Outside of their box the whistle had blown on the women's game against Detectatia. Heidi, the womens' coach, was there to instruct her team, of course, and had been joined by Johan in order that he might learn some techniques for the clearly inferior mens team. Their attendance bore added weight, though, for the opponents the women had faced up to. Arthuria and Detectatia had for years now developed a rivalry on the sporting field that belied the warmth with which their two cultures meshed. When all other avenues of competition are denied to two peoples, they often turn to the sporting field to prove their worthiness over one another. To attend a match between the two countries was not necessarily to watch perfection - to do so one ought to have seen the Radiatians play, and hoped with naïve wonder that they were not doped up like an escaped lion being hunted by zookeepers. No, to attend a Detectatia-Arthuria match was to experience to atmosphere of friendly competition which made the results of this game just slightly more important to Arthurians than some others. To attend was to be able to tell one's friends and family where one had been when the vital goal was scored.

And yet neither coach could tell anyone at this moment. They sat, slumped in their chairs, in shock.

Around them, the support staff had gone into action. Water was being handed out to the Arthurian women. The players passed by with heavy breath, grabbing the bottles with all the strength left in a team which had just played ninety minutes of fast-paced football. Medics were tapping some of the players on the shoulder, asking them to come for inspection or offering them thick outer jackets. Photographers and news crews were beginning to enter into the fray. All the players wanted to do was to get back to the changing rooms and cool down. They did so quickly; none of the staff was willing to deny them their rest after the match. Within four minutes, the team box had emptied, leaving only the two coaches sitting resignedly on the benches, the subjects of numerous photographs from those of the press corps who lingered.

Eventually, Johan managed to speak.

"What?"

"Ja." Heidi mumbled back.

"We were going to lose."

"Ja." She said again, this time with a chuckle of delight as well.

"And now we are through to the qualifiers."

"Ja." Heidi was staring out onto the pitch. "I feel like Ísland in the Euros."

The similarity extended to the crowd, which was applauding as the Arthurians knew best - in time and at gradually decreasing intervals. As a drum beat sounded, the visitors would raise their hands together over their heads in one unified clap, shouting out a deep 'huah' for good measure. The claps started off slowly and increased in pace until all that was heard was an indistinguishable cacophony of shouting and applauding.

"You know what happened to them, Heidi?"

"To Ísland? Ja. But we are expecting to lose, so to do so will be of no consequence. What we did not expect was to win a match. In that way, every single game which we win is special. When we lose and concede our place here to a superior team, we will return home knowing that we have done what is in the spirit of sports; we have played fairly and to the best of our abilities."

"They are not football players. How..." Johan was in shock. Perhaps he had harboured hopes for the women to play well. After all, they were a tightly-bound team and extremely fit. But he knew the mens' team; they were sometimes unruly and mostly relaxed about a tournament which did not concern their sport of choice. How they had won a single game he did not know. But they had, and he would now have to lead them into the qualifiers.

"Well if we are going to say that we played to the best of our abilities," he said, "we had best begin to work harder."

"Ja. No more drinking." Heidi said to no-one in particular, taking more of a mental note of her own plans for the Arthurian women.

"No!" Johan interjected, suddenly cured of his shock. "Drinking hard is a symptom of working hard, Heidi. It is the contract we make with these players; if they graft all day then we reward them with the freedom to drink without judgement. It is the only thing keeping half of the men here. That much I know."

"Fine." Said she. "But no drinking during the day. And you need to get your men to eat their vegetables. And we might consider training them not to receive red cards in every match."

"Alright. I can compromise on that." The two looked back out over the field. The stadium, still abuzz, was beginning to empty of spectators.

"Johan?"

"Ja, Heidi?"

"I feel worried."

He looked over at Heidi. She was staring out towards the ground unblinkingly. She certainly did look worried, and, understanding the nerves of a coach, Johan extended his arm out and rested it on her shoulder.

"Have no fear, Heidi. The pressure is immense, but it is tolerable. We'll get through..."

"No, you fool! I bet one hundred aurar with my friend that we couldn't get through to the semi-finals. If we do then I have to pay her."

Johan removed his hand from Heidi's shoulder.

HB24 Live Commentary - Conpatria v. Higgins & Brown

Postby Higgins and Brown » Sat Sep 17, 2016 5:40 am

15 minutes - "Oh, that's a woeful mistake by Philip Finn! The Conpatrian takes the chance... goal! Goal for Conpatria! What an awful start for us!"

29 minutes - "Altist picks up the ball in his own half, but he's caught on the turn! Oh, that looks like a bad one, the referee has stopped play. It's a booking for the Conpatrian, and Altist looks like he'll need to go off for a few moments, oh! He tried to stand, but something just went in his foot. That's the end of his tournament, surely. Nuzabi is already warming up on the bench. That's no.16, from Michaelstown, used to play for Kings but he's been on loan to Shelborn for 2 seasons now. Altist being carried off. Awful stuff. He gets a standing ovation from the crowd - the Nui-tan fans have been magnificent this tournament and continue to be."

36 minutes - "Nuzabi now... over to the right where Wilson is uncharacteristically forward... he doesn't quite know what to do with it and passes it back to Arold Finn, and back to the goalkeeper. A few groans from travelling Higgins-Brownites as Shinze decides what to do with it. He hits it long. It's picked up by Ráns after a scrap - but he's lost it, and now Conpatria are on the attack... look at that pace! He chips it over the defence.... boom! Arold Finn volleys the ball out of play! Haven't seen him move that fast in a long time. Higgins & Brown being kept on the defensive in this 2nd round play-off...

"Corner to Conpatria, the referee signals, after a bit of discussion as whether it might be a throw-in instead... There's plenty of jostling for position - this is only the second corner of the game so far, and both have been for Conpatria. Higgins & Brown have everyone back for this, which isn't a great sign at this early stage...

"It's swung in with some pace- Goal! In off the head of <a Conpatrian>! He got clear of his marker and make a stunning connection! Shinze Masuko is blaming his defenders, and you have to say they aren't blameless, though they aren't entirely at fault either!"

42 minutes - "Jorj Jóns is screaming at his players from the sidelines. I doubt they're looking forward to the halftime team talk. Mar gets the ball, straight up to Yorn. Yorn turns free of his marker, he's charging forwards, passed another... a pass to Celsi who flicks it turns it forward for Yorn to pick up again... passed another defender and he's one-on-one! He opts for the pass... Celsi is there and he slots it home into the open net! What a goal! What a goal! Finally these two come alive for the national team! A moment of genius!"

Half-time: 2-1 to Conpatria. We go to the studio...
"Well Jim, we've got the mental advantage with that goal to pull it back just before halftime. Now we need to seal the deal. Score immediately after the break, and then a few more as well."

"So you're saying that the best thing for the team to do is score goals?"

"That's exactly what I'm saying."

"Revolutionary stuff Eamo."

The Second Half
49 minutes - "That shot was destined for the top corner, but Shinze keeps it out. This hasn't been the bullish start to the second half we'd have hoped for, and the Conpatrians are only getting more confident!"

52 minutes - "Another dangerous chance for Conpatria! Will Higgins & Brown get back into this game?"

69 minutes - "A freekick... Brucel wants to take it. Its from his sort of range. He and Ráns are having a bit of a dialogue about it. They both line up... Ráns runs up and runs over it... Brucel follows up with the shot... oh it's beautiful! Bottom corner, around the outstretched arms of the keeper! The equaliser for Higgins & Brown! Brucel is under a pile of celebrating team-mates!"

77 minutes - "Higgins & Brown will make a second substitution here... Harak comes on for Spencer, who looks like he's feeling the fatigue. Throw-in is to Mar, who picks out Celsi... he's on the edge of the box, puts it back to Mar the team captain, who sends it left to Ráns this time... he runs straight into the middle and shoots! Blocked by a Conpatrian... Nuzabi picks it up and puts it straight into the box, onto the head of Yorn! Hits the bar and over! A great chance goes missing, but he really stretched as high as he could! The goalkeeper tipped it over and its a corner, the referee says. Fair play to him for getting fingers to it..."

82 minutes - "The ball hasn't left the Higgins-Brownite half since that corner... as the Conpatrian winger collects it- Harak crunches into him with that tackle, and send the ball up to Ráns... Ráns happy to take the ball up the centre of the field... takes it passed one, passed another, a third falls in confusion... Ráns has Yorn to his right, but he shoots! The Top Corner! Goal! Goal! A fantastic solo effort by this man! He sprints over to the Higgins-Brownite fans! Where was this until now?? Where was this talent? He leaps into the crowd! Higgins & Brown were holding on for extra-time... now they're holding on for a place in the quarter-finals!"

Contpatria 2 - 3 Higgins & Brown

SPTV SPORTS TRANSCRIPTS
Women's Coverage

0' | DET 0-0 SEG | Quite a bit of cheering from the crowds as the game kicks off. The viewership for the women's games has been going up and up here in Segland as they perform better than expected, in some cases outdoing the men. With such solid teams this year, we really have a nice chance of taking at least one of the championships.

6' | DET 0-0 SEG | The Dets are making a determined push for the goal, and it's Kara Stone to Felicity Lyon... Lyon makes a shot, but it bounces off goalkeeper Swanhild Huff's head and back into the box! Both teams now wresting for control. The action is to the side of the goal now, and ahhh, Yevgeniya Juliana accidentally kicks it over the goal line. That'll be a corner for Detectatia.

7' | DET 0-0 SEG | Reed kicks it to Lyon, who redeems herself and heads it into the goal! That's real athletic felicity!

12' | DET 1-0 SEG | Looks like Segland wants to get striker Klara Waltz over to the Detectatian goal so she can do her thing like she did versus Conpatria earlier in this tournament. Right now, let's see if they can penetrate that crowded Det midfield.

14' | DET 1-0 SEG | They got through to the Detectatian defense! Waltz is homing in, and she shoots and scores easily! Clear and clean, much in Waltz's style. I think Segland's defense is steady enough to prevent another Detectatia goal -- for a while, at least.

27' | DET 1-1 SEG | Elisabeth Kross makes a deep cross which finds Joy Rivvers, and Rivvers kicks to Lyon, who can only shoot straight into Huff's welcoming hands. I think I see a smirk there on Huff's face! Huff and Lyon have a bit of a rivalry, dating back to the 2012 Oriens Cup when Detectatia beat Segland 2-1 in the women's quarterfinals. Segland was a favorite to win that match, and no doubt Huff, and the entire team, wants revenge.

33' | DET 1-1 SEG | With almost constant laterals, this is looking like ping-pong as the two teams battle it out at center field. It's always a real feat getting the ball past the Detectatian fronts and mids, aaand IT DEFINITELY WON'T HAPPEN THIS TIME AS THEODOSIA IRISS, ONE OF THE YOUNGEST PLAYERS IN THE CUP, TACKLES ELSA WERNER AND TAKES THE FIGHT BACK TO SEGLANDIC TERRITORY! She's under intense pressure now from the Segland defense, and now it's out of bounds on Iriss. Segland throw-in!

40' | DET 1-1 SEG | We're back to center field, where so much of this match seems to be taking place. Wait, Eva Poole just tricked her way past Bergstultcher and Toov and is -- this looks pretty familiar -- running downfield to the Seglandic goal! She kicks to Sera Reed, who's just arrived in the area but is poised like she's been there forever, and Reed shoots into the corner and scores! There's a zoom-in on both Lyon and Huff, one of whom is clearly a lot happier!

45' | DET 2-1 SEG | If this was full-time, we'd have on our hands a repeat of Oriens 2012! Thankfully it's not, and Segland has a chance to come back and seize its rightful place in the women's play-offs.

HALF-TIME: DETECTATIA 2 - 1 SEGLAND

Team Segland emerging from half-time with their heads up and smiles on their faces. I hope they can translate that confidence into their playing, as everything for them rests on their performance against Detectatia in this half.

48' | DET 2-1 SEG | Beyer and Mohlen, both forwards, are zigzagging up the pitch at breakneck pace! Where was this kind of drive in the first half?! They're near the goal, and Waltz comes up in between them; Mohlen crosses to Waltz, WHO GIVES DETECTATIAN GOALKEEPER BROOK ROEY A NICE HAIRCUT AS THE BALL GRAZES HER HEAD AND GOES STRAIGHT IN! Three minutes into the second half and Segland has already closed the gap!

54' | DET 2-2 SEG | Detectatia missed a chance to score a wide-open goal just now; Lyon will definitely beat herself up over that one. Segland is pushing them back with vigor. No way Detectatia is gonna get another opportunity like that!

59' | DET 2-2 SEG | Beyer, Mohlen, and Waltz are running circles around the Detectatian defense as they set themselves up for a goal. Werner and Bergstultcher are joining the fray to try to supplement the attack. And wow, Carolin Gryff just stole it from Mohlen, who was getting a little too careless with her moves. Bergstultcher is already on Gryff, and Werner and Beyer are there with support.

60' | DET 2-2 SEG | Werner tackles the ball from Gryff and runs with it, protected by Beyer and Bergstultcher... Mohlen is at the box, where the Dets tried and failed to catch her offside, so she takes advantage of their relative distance and shoots for a goal, and she scores! This won't be a second 2012, oh no it won't!

66' | DET 2-3 SEG | Detectatia is, of course, pressing forward with all they've got, but Seglanders don't let go of a lead easily! They're fighting back with equal if not greater force. The Seglandic defense is rock-solid!

73' | DET 2-3 SEG | Klara Waltz has the ball and she's gotten into the Detectatians' vulnerable zone, she shoots for a goal but MISSES, IT BOUNCES OFF THE GOALPOST -- AND WOW, WERNER SOMEHOW MANAGES TO GET POSSESSION OF IT, CROSSES IT BACK TO WALTZ, WHO SHOOTS AGAIN AND SHE DOESN'T MISS THIS TIME! SEGLAND SOLIDIFIES ITS LEAD, 2-4!

79' | DET 2-4 SEG | We're seeing Segland use the Detectatians' own practiced tactic against them, tying up the game for as long as possible at midfield. They don't want Detectatia to even come close, that's for sure.

85' | DET 2-4 SEG | Again, not a whole lot happening at this point aside from a hopeful Detectatian incursion that got warded off by Margareth Teuthel back to center field. Viewers will likely remember that back in Oriens 2012, the Dets scored their game-winning goal against Segland at 85 minutes. A similar victory won't be possible this time, though! It seems that Segland has it.

90' | DET 2-4 SEG :: FINAL| There the game wraps up after an amazing second half on the part of the Seglanders, truly rocketing back from a one-point deficit and scoring three consecutive goals against a Detectatian team that seemed a bit insipid after an impressive first-half performance. The Seglandic women's team will get to move on to the play-offs after all!

Alin, Nui-ta

"Not a bad match," tersely said the unidentified man who accompanied the soccer team wherever it went.

L. Samuel Jackson chuckled in response. "High praise, coming from you," he said, accepting a glass of Nui-tan feni that the bartender slid across the counter.

The Seglandic men's team had come to an upscale bar to relax after their upset victory against Poldania. It was in a new part of Alin, one that had probably been destroyed during the Partition and was now seeing an influx of new investment and rebuilding. The unidentified man, an expert in Nui-tan culture and history, was well aware just how devastating to the island country that war had been. Though he didn't show it, he was duly impressed by how Nui-ta seemed to have come back stronger than ever before. Hadin could learn a few things -- and under Nikastro, it hopefully would.

"You know, this place isn't so poorly developed. Imagine if we could get Seglandic Zanzes up to this level -- we'd have another first-world Demarchist country," mused the man.

"Ya gettin' all political on me, man," Jackson said. "I'm just here to have a drink."

"Sorry. It's just an interest of mine," said the man.

"An interest? Well, I'll tell ya what I think is gonna happen with Seglandic Zanzes. We're getting pretty chill with Radiatia, and therefore also with Nui-ta. Which means we don't have much need for a big piece of land on Terra Occidens to threaten them with. I bet it gets sold to the Hadinians in the next few years," speculated Jackson.

"Not if the Nui-tans realign themselves," the man muttered.

"If they realign themselves? To who? Now you're getting me a little interested..."

"To Poldania. It's the natural choice -- Nui-ta can't rely on Radiatia, since not only were they disappointed by their performance in the Karasian War, but the Radiatians are also becoming more isolationist. So who's the other big opponent of UNCA? Poldania. And the enemy of my enemy is my friend, ergo..."

"Well damn," said Jackson, finishing off his feni and motioning for another. "Bottom line, then, is that Nui-ta remains an enemy?"

"Perhaps not in the traditional sense of the word. The real bottom line is that Seglandic Zanzes is a strategic boon for more reasons than one, and it sure as hell won't get sold to a country that needs money way more than us."

"Huh. You sure know a lot for a soccer manager," Jackson said with a laugh.

The unidentified man laughed as well, but as his gaze fell upon a number of empty glasses in front of him, he realized that he had imbibed several drinks already without thinking. No wonder I've nearly blown my damn cover, he thought, annoyed with himself. He was supposed to be a prissy caretaker of the team, not a hardened geopolitical analyst. Best bet was to change the topic...

"Speaking of soccer, what's the big plan going forward?" the man asked. "We have some high expectations on us now, both internationally and at home in Segland. We can't afford to disappoint."

"Have I been a disappointment yet? I'll keep coaching how I've been coaching for the past few matches, make sure the team is playing at their absolute best, and win. No need to overthink, ya dig?"

"Sure, sure. Complacency was our biggest problem, but you seem to have gotten that under control."

"Yeah, it's pretty simple," said Jackson. "Reward them for winning, punish them for laziness. Carrot-and-stick approach. We do that often enough in international relations, am I right?"

"Guess so. Anyway, I have a bit of an idea for PR," the man stated.

"Oh? Let's hear it."

"Well, I was thinking we could boost our image by making one of our players into a superstar, Rayner Okan style. Maybe, say, Finn Stump?"

Both men looked over their shoulders and caught sight of Stump, who was stumbling around the bar as he tried to reenact his best moves from the game earlier. They looked back at each other and burst out laughing.

"Yeah, he's Rayner Okan material, no doubt about it!"

I goofed on Varisea's previous ranking on MD4 and didn't catch the error until typing up these results. The Varisean female team should have been ranked 6th instead of 3rd after Match Day 4.

The match was re-calculated to reflect correct rankings, so results posted here are correct. Rankings will also be corrected for the MD4 chart. Apologies.

Wow, I was really off, I forgot that MD5 was an elimination day. The bottom four of each bracket have been sent home in preparation for the Quarterfinals!

"And welcome back to our continued coverage of the Noctur Cup, I'm Amar Zohran and this is the Post-Game Wrap".

"Our special coverage for the end of tonight's game, I can't believe Match Day 5 has finally come and gone. With the inclement weather and all, several of the post-Qualifier matches has faced significant delays. Of course, we wouldn't want our players and guest players to have to play football in the middle of a severe storm. Speaking of which, whose idea was it to schedule the Noctur Cup in Nui-ta during the rainy season anyway?"

"In addition to re-capping all your favorite matches from tonight's match day, we'll also be going over the advancing teams as they reach the last few hurdles of this magnificent competition. Let's get it started!"

"This is Nui-ta, after all, so even though we played last in the men's matches tonight, I'd still be remiss if I didn't talk about this match first. With as many skilled competitors as we have in the Noctur Cup, no one was expecting a 0-0 tie. Absolutely nobody: you just don't see that at this level of competition. It's been a bit worrying to see our teams suffer through some fatigue --- this has definitely impacted their performance, and Detectatia did all that it could to capitalize. I personally really enjoy seeing the Detectatian men play --- and totally not just because most Nui-tans think they might be the last decent first-world nation left --- and totally not because of any weird attraction I might have to their goalkeeper. Edward Hoyte. Who is totally Hoyte if you know what I mean".

"Call me".

"Anyway".

"Unfortunately for Detectatia's male team, as stellar as their performance was, it simply wasn't enough when considering that both Segland and Higgins and Brown outperformed their competition and displaced both Detectatia and Nui-ta in rank. With Nui-ta having a slightly higher goal differencial, the ranking rules placed Nui-ta at the bottom of the qualifying list for advancement, while Detectatia, at the top of the non-qualifiers, was forced to say goodbye. Here's hoping for Noctur Cup II!"

"Speaking of Segland and Higgins and Brown's men's teams, let's talk about Higgins and Brown first, shall we? Before that match against Poldania, both Poldania and Higgins and Brown were ranked 4th and 5th respectively, and they were separated by a thin margin. Higgins and Brown did everything it could to widen the gap between it, and its opponent. After the fourth goal it was really clear that HB wasn't playing with the kid gloves on anymore --- there were no pity shots, and there was no relaxation. The HB offense just kept drilling into Poldania until there was simply nothing left. The HB defensive wall definitely had its cracks, and with three goals, there's no denying Poldania attempted to bring the wall down, but the six goals and the win did nothing to hurt Higgins and Brown's ranking in the cup. Unfortunately, Poldania couldn't say the same".

"Going over to the Seglandic match --- Segland is a team that I really have my eyes on for the rest of the Cup. For starters, alongside Higgins and Brown, they are the only team remaining in the Noctur Cup to have both teams continue into the Quarterfinals. Secondly, and this applies to both the men's and women's Seglandic teams, they started this Cup out as the underdogs. They had some truly horrific plays in the early Match Days. They barely made it into the Qualifiers, and they were one of the likeliest candidates for elimination".

"Well since then, the men and the women have both stepped it up. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Segland barbarically executes losing athletes instead of encouraging them to perform better, or maybe it has something to do with the fact that Segland is a crazy dictatorship and has that one really creepy guy in black whom we had to admit into the country to avoid a diplomatic fiasco between ourselves and Segland despite the fact that no one really knows who he is --- seriously who the fuck is ---"

The broadcast cuts out, displaying a technical difficulties sign for a moment before re-appearing with a different anchor.

"Hello there, I'm Yakulim Solba --- Amar Zohran is out on administrative leave. Welcome back to our continued coverage of the Noctur Cup. To our viewers, we would like to sincerely apologies for the use of a certain curse word on non-watershed television. We have also gained an update involving the mystery man from Segland from the Ministry of Defense that said man in question is a sports commentator from Segland whose identity is not to be questioned further for the sake of continued loyalty to the Emperor".

"Anyway".

"I do agree that Segland's rise from the bottom to the top of the league is extraordinary and worth discussing. Seglandic history has always been one of failure and redemption, and the fact that Segland's football teams play the game like their history books write themselves makes for some spectacular turns of events. They will no doubt be a team to continue watching, as we look to see whether their luck continues to hold in the last two matches of the game. Personally, I hope not --- no offense to Segland, but obviously in a Segland v. Nui-ta match, I'm rooting for their opponent".

"On the men's league, the final --- and in my opinion most interesting team --- is the Algrabadi one. When Hadin, also known as Noctur's most patriarchal nation, announced that they would not be sending a female delegation to the Cup, the world was not surprised. There is talk that next year, Fiete Nikastro might change his mind, but for this year the Hadinian delegation consisted solely of men --- who played poorly and were eliminated before the Qualifiers even started".

"The Algrabadi women's team was about the same --- from Noctur's most matriarchal nation, the dominant team that all of Algrabad is watching had a shoddy performance from Day 1. It was a shame to see them field so many goals during MD3 with Radiatia, despite their loss, only to have the entire match thrown out on account of Radiatia's inability to follow the rules of the game. Noctur Cup authorities have revealed earlier this morning that they will be fining the Radiatian delegation in accordance with the terms of entry contract, and will further be barring Radiatia from all future Noctur Cups until such time that the fines are paid. Some teams, like Algrabad, Hadin, and predictably Segland, have argued that this punishment isn't enough and that Radiatia should be barred indefinitely from at least the next Noctur Cup".

"The Noctur Cup Association has made its final verdict, however. Provided that Radiatia pays the fine and does not engage in cheating behaviors again, they'll be allowed to return in NC2. If President Jaagen Autenberg is somehow watching this, by the way, I'd just like to take a moment to remind him that the NCA is a private organization, not affiliated with the Nui-tan government, and that any missiles should not be aimed at us".

"But anyway, the women's team has humiliatingly been eliminated from the cup at 8th place out of 8 qualifying teams. Now there's a team I wonder if we'll be seeing again, given that it is Algrabad. Maybe if Hadin follows Algrabad's example and sends a female team, we might see the same thing next year".

"For the upcoming match predictions, on the men's side, I think that Nui-ta should safely win against Higgins and Brown, but after that, a victory against Segland would be a tough one, and a victory against Algrabad would be a miracle given their virtually impenetrable defense, though I am holding out for one. As for the Algrabad v. Segland match, I'm safely putting my Had on Algrabad, although if Segland somehow wins, it would fare easily against HB, while a Segland v. Nui-ta match would be uncertain".

"As for the women, Arthuria v. Segland should be a close win for Arthuria, while Detectatia v. Higgins and Brown is actually a difficult match to place a bet on, although I'm going to raise some eyebrows by putting my bet on a close win for HB. Assuming this all happens, Arthuria should easily win against Higgins-Brown or Detectatia, if it comes to it, while Segland would easily overwhelm the former and have a more difficult time with the latter".

"We're breaking for commercial now, but stay tuned for our discussion on what's next for Rayner Okan!"

Postby Higgins and Brown » Thu Oct 20, 2016 4:04 pm

We Join the Game in the second half. Higgins & Brown are playing in white...
65 minutes - It's 1-1. And my, what a turgid game... but that ball is cut out by Latief, and she immediately cleaves the Dectectatians open with that pass to Dún, who squares it for Largo. Higgins & Brown making something out of nothing here. its a fast paced reply into the box and Dún is back on the end- she misses it! Sulivan takes it and strikes! Saved! But its back out! Dún again!! GOAL! 2-1! The Maragest go ahead!

82 Minutes - Just under ten minutes left, and coach Mukon is screaming at her players from the sidelines. She is not please with their relaxed attitude at 2-1 up... and can you blame her with that mistake by Sidl?! Detectatia are through here suddenly... great pass through... she's in one-on-one! Oh, dreadful foul! Penalty to Detectatia, and I should think so!

Reed was through there, clearly going to score. The referee gives Louise Gorma a yellow card, and she's lucky it wasn't red. And she knows it.

Reed is a star player in her home country. Goalkeeper Burn has proved herself in this tournament so far but she'd be doing very well to save this... she doesn't, that's a goal. The equaliser! Reed did well to exploit a small error in the back, and she's done well to convert that penalty! Such poise! Are we going to extra time?

The answer was yes. Yes we were.
101 Minutes - Sulivan gives way to her rival Rósh. She can't complain really. She hasn't produced a winner, and she's looking tired at the front. A sensible substitution.

Dweali will take this corner. She absolutely bungs it to the other end of the box! Rósh comes out to meet it! Gets her head to it and its in! My gravelly soil, there was pace on that ball, and it boomeranged back toward goal! Her first touch! She ran straight from the touchline and connected with that ball like it was threatening her family! Great vision by Dweali to pick her out! Completely unmarked, bit of a shame really that Detectatians let that happen, but it was pretty stunning when it did! Roey was beaten from the moment it struck Rósh's head!

Half-time at extra, and in the studio...

"Well funnily enough, we have an interesting interview here. Altgroupier [General] Locke, how nice of you to join our team in the tunnel!

Locke is a little tipsy. "Well, I never miss a chance to see our girls decisively defeat another country - whatever the sport!"

"What have you thought about their tactics?"

"Well, I may be an army man and occasionally a politician... but I thought they would've outflanked the other team a bit more... get behind them, catch them with their pants down, and plug them in the back!"

at which point the interview is aburptly cut short.

"Altgroupier Locke there, in Noctur, mixing up his military and football tactics I think."

"And showing the bloodlust that earned him his place at the top of our military, I think."

"Eh, yes, Noreen, yes, that too..."

Extra Time, Second Half
110 Minutes - "Detectatia getting increasingly desperate... Higgins & Brown hanging back... Mukon is once more egging her players on to shut the game down with another goal. Bit of an odd thing to say with 10 minutes left... but she's bloody passionate!"

113 Minutes - "Kross caught with the ball here... Latief takes it off her, and that's a beautiful ball through for Anrussel to run onto down the left - and the roar of the crowd as the Higgins-Brownites come rushing out of their half! Rósh is screaming for it, but Anrussel cuts inside, she's rushing into the box! Rósh still to her left, but Anrussel will take the shot! Beautiful! Under the keeper and into the corner! 4-2 Higgins & Brown! Full Speed Ahead Rahku City!!!! Higgins & Brown are going to the Final!!! What an achievement for these Women!!!"

"And what scenes as Ruth Mukon embraces her controversial genius, Rúth Anrussel! The referees break up the celebrations, there's still more time to be played... but there's no comeback from this, surely?"

The answer was no, no there wasn't. Higgins & Brown qualify!

Detectatia 2 - Higgins & Brown

Meanwhile, in the men's game...

They Kick-off
"And the challenge tonight for Higgins & Brown will be to settle down, and avoid any over confidence from their recent slew of performances. Nui-ta are not going to come easy. That being said this is a Higgins-Brownite team that likes to score a lot, and sometimes concedes quite a bit as well. Nui-ta much more conservative."

15 Minutes - "Ráns has really come into his own over the last few games. Easily the best standalone player on the team in this tournament, though Yorn and Celsei have been excellent partners up front. Steven Barmby filling in on the right today and he pulls the ball up that flank. He's not a spectacularly fast player, but he whips the ball in at some speed... Yorn connects with a half volley! But its punched wide by the keeper! Corner. Barmby to take it. It's short to Mar who pegs it in... Yorn is there again and its in!! Beautiful play! 1-0 to Higgins & Brown after 15 minutes!"

39 Minutes - Saved by the Nui-tan, Brass! Can you believe, that's the first Higgins-Brownite shot on goal since they went 1-0 up? A lot of midfield play but both teams are letting themselves down in the final third. Have Higgins & Brown lost their goalscoring mojo? Or are Nui-ta just being too threatening for them? The chance of a counter-attack seems ever present, but they've pulled nothing concrete off yet.

44 Minutes - And it falls to Shaam here, who belts it - and I mean belts it - down the right wing, where Samal has left Spencer far behind and collects it! He moves past a Finn, and now Mar who has tracked back. A nice slot opens up for the pass into Maynaka who takes a controlling touch... a shot...! Smashes against the cross bar! Masuko was beaten! Oh, that could've been a seminal moment for Nui-ta if they'd equalised before half-time!

Half-time
"Just to be clear Eamo, you still reckon they should score more goals than the other team in order to win."

"Yeah. But, now they've scored a goal. They could actually get away with just not conceding one, and then it wouldn't matter how many they score Jim."

"You're an inspiration Eamo".

Second Half
48 Minutes - Ráns brings it inside and chips that, almost comically, to the far-post. Celsi gets there and hits the ball back towards the box instead of the goal... Nuzabi turns up with a shot, oh a nice feint actually, and a pass out to Barnby. There's no end product here but Higgins & Brown have come out flying... Barnby's got back up from Wilson, who gets in trouble with Alvaro Zorzi. Zorzi dispossessed him but gave away the throw-in on the wing. Higgins & Brown regroup. Wilson takes the throw. Out to the ever-present Mar, who gives it back to him. Wilson struggles... passes it back to Mar, who turns. Nuzabi offers himself but he's being market. Mar bungs it out to Spencer on the far-side. Spencer inside to Ráns. Ráns takes the shot from far-out! Oh, My! What a goal!! That's how you take charge of a match! 2-0 to Higgins & Brown!! What a start to the second half!

51 minutes - And what Nui-ta really need is a quick reply. Can ji-Mahana provide? He's looking for someone to take it, but he goes running at the defence himself! Around one, a leg out by a Finn puts him in difficulty... Talevicious picks it up and scoops it towards goal! Saved by Masuka but it rebounds out to ji-Mahana and Finn who jostle for it! GOAL FOR Ji-MAHANA! He beat Arold Finn to that ball and skilfully nipped it over the spread-out Masuka! 2-1! Nui-ta are back in this game!

67 Minutes - That corner's in-swinging... Shaam the unlikely header! Off the bar, thuds against the ground and I think that was James Wilson who booted in about as far as it could possibly be booted. A Nui-ta throw-in at the half-way line. Maynaka protests that it was over the line. The referee is having none of it. Some in the crowd thought it had gone in, they were quickly disappointed.

74 Minutes - A yellow card for Karan there, but he'll be more upset about giving away this free kick... Ráns looks like he wants to repeat his long distance goal of earlier. He takes the shot... but its over. Not by a huge margin, but this isn't practice, so that won't mean anything to him. The goalkeeper wasn't seriously troubled.

77 Minutes - Nui-ta come back on the attack. They have been a bit relentless, but it hasn't come to fruition since that first goal... Nuzabi takes that ball of Talevicious and its on to Celsei. Celsei back to Mar. Talevicious intervenes to win back the ball he lost moments ago, and its back up the field to ji-Mahana the goalscorer- out to the left to Veisi. That's a beautiful ball in! It beats Maynaka in the air, and Arold Finn sweeps it up! Akif Samal looked like he was going to seriously have a go if it came to him! Maynaka will be upset to have come so close! Nui-ta are really going for that equaliser!

81 Minutes - Celsi then picks it up, out to Ráns who runs with it (there's a surprise, not), swings the cross well over to the right for Barnby to pick up. Barnby attacks the defence, brings the ball back to Yorn, over to Celsi with the first touch and he's free on goal! GOAL! Celsi! A better placed strike we haven't seen from this man yet! 3-1 to Higgins & Brown! They're on the road to the championship, and the traffic just sped up! Yorn and Ráns to be subbed off. The manager signalled it almost immediately. Ice baths and rest before the final? Or just more defensively minded players to seal the deal maybe? Pétr Shepli comes on to replace Yorn, he'll go straight into midfield and leave Celsi on his own up-front. Harak comes on for Ráns. He'll swap with left-back Spencer, who will push up the wing.

88 Minutes - There's a bit of bad temper out there now. Nui-ta don't deserve to be losing 3-1 and their players know it. Shepli brings that inside. Out to Barnby. Back to Shepli, who turns on his fresh legs... and is brought down by Dev Karan. That's the sort of mistake you just don't make earlier on in the game. Just inside the area as well, so that will be a penalty, to add insult to injury. Karan gets a booking. It was a silly challenge, but nothing malicious.

89 Minutes - Celsi steps up to take the penalty... and converts it! 4-1! The scoreline really doesn't tell the whole story though! Nui-ta will be so very disappointed with this game. Higgins & Brown will be over the moon!

Higgins & Brown 4-1 Nui-ta
