Overwiev
The First Division, commonly known as Cooperative Bank First Division for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional association football division of the Fluviquean football league system. Organized by the Royal Football Association (RFA), The First Division is contested by 20 teams, with the two lowest-placed teams relegated to the First B Division and replaced by the top two teams in that division plus the two winners of a play-off.
In 1896 the league started with only six teams from Mevosa, Betham and Geneva. The league was expanded throught the years, reaching the actual 20 teams in 1920. The First Division turned professional in 1931 when a players strike threatened the start of the tournament and forced the clubs to accept minimum wages and more rights.
A total of 51 teams have competed in The First Division since its inception. Seventeen teams have been crowned champions, with Betham winning the title a record 30 times and Mevosa 25. The Big Five have dominated the championship since 1918, winning 84 titles in total, though the First Division also saw other champions, specially since 2000s, inluding Liberty, Aztus, Greencastle and Alkanter FC.
Sponsorship
In 1993-1994 season, following a petition of the clubs to increase revenues and promoting the brand, the league naming rights were sold to SportVision, wich also had the broadcasting rights. Until 2003 the league was named SportVision First Division, with a special name in 1995-96, when the name was Centenary First Division by SportVision.
SportVision's deal with the RFA ended in 2003, when Kendall Insurance signed a five years deal, renaming the league as Kendall First Division. In 2008 the contract was extended until 2012, when it was replaced by Cooperative Bank, which also bought the naming rights of the First B Division and the Third Division for a five years deal.
As well as sponsorship for the league itself, the First Division has a number of official partners and suppliers. The official ball supplier for the league is Adidas who have had the contract since the 1999–2000 season.
