Overwiev

The First Division, commonly known as Cooperative Bank First Division for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional association football division of the Fluviquean football league system. Organized by the Royal Football Association (RFA), The First Division is contested by 20 teams, with the two lowest-placed teams relegated to the First B Division and replaced by the top two teams in that division plus the two winners of a play-off.

In 1896 the league started with only six teams from Mevosa, Betham and Geneva. The league was expanded throught the years, reaching the actual 20 teams in 1920. The First Division turned professional in 1931 when a players strike threatened the start of the tournament and forced the clubs to accept minimum wages and more rights.

A total of 51 teams have competed in The First Division since its inception. Seventeen teams have been crowned champions, with Betham winning the title a record 30 times and Mevosa 25. The Big Five have dominated the championship since 1918, winning 84 titles in total, though the First Division also saw other champions, specially since 2000s, inluding Liberty, Aztus, Greencastle and Alkanter FC.

Sponsorship

In 1993-1994 season, following a petition of the clubs to increase revenues and promoting the brand, the league naming rights were sold to SportVision, wich also had the broadcasting rights. Until 2003 the league was named SportVision First Division, with a special name in 1995-96, when the name was Centenary First Division by SportVision.

SportVision's deal with the RFA ended in 2003, when Kendall Insurance signed a five years deal, renaming the league as Kendall First Division. In 2008 the contract was extended until 2012, when it was replaced by Cooperative Bank, which also bought the naming rights of the First B Division and the Third Division for a five years deal.

As well as sponsorship for the league itself, the First Division has a number of official partners and suppliers. The official ball supplier for the league is Adidas who have had the contract since the 1999–2000 season.

Fluviquean Cup

Overview

The Fluviquean Cup, know as Fluviquean Cup presented by Royal Post for sponsorship reasons, is an annual knockout association football competition. First played in 1907-1908, it is the second oldest association football competition in Fluvique. It is organised by The Royal Football Association. The tournament was born as a tournament to celebrate the April Revolution centennial in 1908. The Swedish embassy in Mevosa donated the trophy, thus the tournament was named Swedish Cup until 1921.

The competition is open to all the clubs affiliated to the RFA and participating in a official league organized directly or indirectly by the RFA (First Division, First B Division, Thir Division, National League, C League, D League and provincial leagues). The tournament consists of 12 randomly drawn rounds followed by the semi-finals and the final. Entrants are not seeded, although the higher ranked teams enter in later rounds, typically facing lower ranked teams. The minimum number of games needed to win the competition ranges from six to fourteen.

The first six rounds are the Preliminary Round, from which 32 teams progress to the first round of the Final Stage, meeting the first of the 92 professional teams. The last entrants are from the first three divisions. Since its creation, non-first division teams have never reached the final and only five have reached semifinals. However, the competition has a deep history of "giant-killing" victories. The final is played in a different stadium every edition, selected to be of easy access to the supporters.

Winners receive the Fluviquean Cup trophy, a replica of the original design, currently in the RFA museum. Winners also won a place in the RFA Super-Cup match. Terralands Football Club are the current holders, having beaten Aztus Football Club 4-3 on penalty kicks, after tying 0-0 in the full match. The most successful club is Mevosa Football club, with 21 thropies.

The Royal Football Association Super-Cup

The Royal Football Association Super-Cup is Fluvique football's annual match contested between the champions of the previous First Division season and the holders of the Fluviquean Cup. If the First Division champions also won the Fluviquean Cup, the cup automatically goes to that club. Organised by the Royal Football Association, proceeds from the game are distributed to community-based initiatives and charities around the country. Ticket revenues are also distributed to charities and projects and any other profit is distributed to sporting scholarships.

The cup was first played on December 26, 1914 as a charity match to help the victims of a fire. Thus, the cup is colloquially known as Saint Stephen's vase and the tradition to play in that date continues uninterrupted since 1919. The current holders are Terralands FC, who won the SuperCup by beating Saint Matthew 4-1 in the 2015 match.

The transfer window is now closed. Bellow is the list of the Cooperative Bank First Division clubs transfers in the 2016 winter transfer window. The transfer window began one week after the end of the 2015-16 season and remained open until 23:00 on 31 August 2016. All deals are pending to approval of the Royal Football Association.

Clubs may be permitted to sign a player on an emergency deal under the Injury Rule, which states that a player with at least three matches in the current season, a valid contract and with an injury of a healing time longer than three months, could be replaced by another local player (this is, a player playing in a league directly or indirectly organized by the RFA) at any time throughout the season.

The summer transfer window will begin on December 26.

Le Grand Classique
Image

Fluvique become a ghost country when Betham and Mevosa face eachother. The nation shuts down and every city is shaken by the feverish excitement of the Grand Classique, focal point of football in the multiverse. Two hundred thirty-five kilometers separate the cities of Mevosa and Betham and the supporters of both teams, who have a historical struggle for supremacy of Fluviquean football, being this rivalry, one of the most fervent in the multiverse's football.

The match is a transcendental spectacle and an intense ceremony with a congregation of millions. Is the main national event gathering an unrivalled level of attention. It is a national rivalry, born out of the most intense love for the game and is increased for a bitter hatred between both clubs, eternally fighting to be the biggest club in Fluvique. Mevosa has a gap of seven victories over Betham in the derby, while the last results are more favourable to the violet and white team.

Their rivalry usually prompts outrageous scenes and episodes of violence. The most dramatic was in 1967, after a 2-2 tie at Betham's South Lane stadium. Sixty five Mevosa's fans died in an incident never clarified. Betham fans usually throw paper coffins filled with manure, while Mevosa's supporters usually welcome their rivals throwing stones, flares and balloons with pee. Both groups of fans reveal the dark side of the rivalry, sometimes defined by the hardcore faction of hooligans and sadly accepted and celebrated by the average supporter. However, despite the violent side, the derby is an amazing meeting between the two biggest clubs in the country.

Despite their differences, the clubs have a common origin in the ports of both cities, being the main centers of the country and their struggles date back to colonial times and it intensified in the civil wars of the XIX century. Football was introduced in Fluvique by British sailors and the spark of the passion started in the docklands.

Founded in 1900, Betham Football Club was supported by British immigrants and quickly moved out from the port to a more wealthy zone in the north of the city. The new location gave them a bigger area to develop more sports besides football and the nick name of 'The Silk-stockings' and won popularity among the upper classes.

On the other side of the North river, natural border between provinces, in the Unionmouth neighborhood, Mevosa Football Club was born in 1902, by a group of young Italians who decided to create a club for the working class. The club have been playing in the same place since 1912, when they bought a terrain to build its first wooden stadium and the nowadays Little Box in 1939. Due to the smell of the industrial zone and the polluted river, their rivals gave them the nickname of "Dungers", which now is part of the club's identity rather than an insult.

The first game was contested in 1905 and it was victory for Mevosa by 1-0. The first game in the First Division was held in 1912, with a victory for Betham by 2-1. In that early history, an infamous match lit the rivalry. In a game for the twenty-ninth matchday of the 1917-18 season, Betham visited Mevosa as leader of the tournament one point ahead over the yellow and black team. In a hotly contested match, Betham striker William McAlyson scored the first goal at 29', while local defender Eliseo Fernandez tied the match at 72'. The game was close to the end, when referee Charles Malcolm awarded a penalty kick to Mevosa.

The local supporters invaded the turf to celebrate the decision and Betham's goalkeeper Aaron Smith was hit with a brick, while other players were stoned. After 30 minutes, the police expelled the people and cleared the pitch, but the away side was claiming to suspend the match, due to the attack suffered. The referee insisted to continue playing, under risk of cause more troubles ,but Betham players left the pitch in protest.

The RFA decided to finish the match and award the game to Mevosa by a score of 1-0, causing the fury of Betham's board. Finally, Mevosa won the league in that season, increasing the rivalry even more. For the yellow and black, the match is referred as "The Derby of the desertion", while Betham's fans call it "The robbery of the century". Since then, every match was a clash of styles and ideas and a seeking of revenge. Mevosa dominated in the 10s and 20s, while Betham was owner of the derby in the 40s and 50s. The yellow and black team lost its prevalence in First Division with a ten years drought until 1954 when they won the league again. However, their rivals suffered the worst curse in their history: nineteen years without a league.

After a clear prevalence of both sides in the 90s and 2000s, the last league won by Betham was in 2009, one year after the last one of their rivals. The most succesfull team is Mevosa FC, with 69 titles (25 First Division, 21 Fluviquean Cups and 23 Super Cups), while Betham FC is second with 64 titles (30 First Division, 10 Fluviquean Cups and 24 Super Cups)

On this occasion, the 226th official derby in the history comes with a different reality between the two colossus. The home team, in one side, lost their last match 3-2 against Sallcia, their second defeat in the last fourt matches. The last victory was in the week 9, winning 4-1 over Wanderers. The team is fourth with nineteen points, two behind the leaders.

In the other side of the pitch, Mevosa's last victory was against Aztus, on week 5. After, the team tied five matches-in-a-row and is currently fifteen with eleven points, near the relegation play-offs. So far, the yellow and black team only won two matches and the pressure over them is huge, with criticism over Paul Franco, star of the team between 1995-2007 and coach since February 2016.

This Sunday, 18:00 at South Lane Stadium, we will lve an exciting game, with a lot of tension, as usually in the Grand Classiques. Betham will try to continue fighting for the tittle, while Mevosa need a victory to avoid falling even more and stop the crisis. Add to that the fact of being the Fluviquean derby par excellence, resulting in one of the best rivalries in the multiverse's scene.

PRE MATCH: It is a sunny and hot afternoon here at Betham, 31ºC. The humidity is at 60% and there is not wind.

Betham's team to play Mevosa: Van Aalst, Winston, Castanginnet, Grey, Rogers, Attaway, Escarrà, Seward, Bovér, D'cruze and Pittaluga
SUBS: Sutton, Snyders, Bardsley, Stern, Vespa, Battle and Nolan-Grant.

SUBS: Sutton, Snyders,Bardsley, Stern, Leavitt, Caruso and Nolan-Grant.

17:52 Chants are turned into boos and whistles when the Mevosa's players enter to the pitch. From the upper stand, dozens of yellow and black balloons are thrown. The eleven Dungers raise their arms to greet their supporters. We'll still waiting for Betham.

17:54 As the first violet player enters to the pitch, the crowd lit flares and smoke bombs and confetti are thrown to the turf while fireworks covers the stadium with a dense fog. Both teams are ready to play!

17:57 We have a delay until the fog disappears.

FIRST HALF

BET 0-0 MEV| 1': Kick-off!

BET 0-0 MEV| 3': The Derby starts with fouls in the midfield and inaccurate passes. The nervousness of both teams is clear. There is a lot of fear of a defeat.

BET 0-0 MEV| 7': Free kick to Betham from the left. Bovér shots and finds Winston alone in the box, but his touch hits the second post and misses the opener. It's still 0-0.

BET 0-0 MEV| 12': Attaway ross from the right finds D'cruze alone in the area. He quickly passes to Pittaluga with a header, but his touch is easily controlled by Varamoninov.

BET 0-0 MEV| 14': Bovér advances with the ball and passes to Pittaluga, who avoid Sawyer and shoots, but the ball goes above the crossbar.

BET 0-0 MEV| 16':Image Violent foul of Albring, who is cautioned. Betham players round referee Patrick Yenn to protest. They are claiming a red card. Mhago and De la Mesea pushes Escarrà an now both teams gather in the midfield to argue and shout. There are threats and insults. The derby is heating up.

BET 0-0 MEV| 16':Image Yellow cards to Mhago and Escarrà for the incident.

BET 0-0 MEV| 18': GOOOOOOAAAAALLLL! Mevosa strikes first!. Pullian crosses to the penalty spot and there De la Mesea wins the contest over Castanginnet and Grey to head the ball and send it to the angle, impossible to Van Aalst, despite his effort.

BET 0-1 MEV| 21': Free kick from the right to Betham. Seward ball goes into the area, is headed in the first post but Winston is unable to control it and his shot goes wide.

BET 0-1 MEV| 29': Good move of Mevosa. Mhago run with the ball and opens to Dirksen, who passes to Auze. He avoids Grey and shoot, but the ball flies over the crossbar.

BET 0-1 MEV| 38': Bovér with a personal move avoid two players, enters to the area and shoots before the attempt of Albring, but the ball goes wide. It was very close.

BET 0-1 MEV| 40': Long shot from Seward, magnificently saved by Varamoninov, who flies over his right to send the ball to corner kick.

BET 0-1 MEV| 41': PENALTY TO BETHAM. After the cross of Bovér, the ball was headed in the first post by Attaway and when it went to D'cruze, Dirksen touched the ball with his hand. Yenn shows him a yellow card. All Mevosa's players surround the referee and shout at him, complaining about the decision. The most angry is Dirksen and some teammates tries to stop him. There are shoves. And it is red card to Dirksen, supposedly for verbal abuse. Bad news to the visitors.

BET 0-1 MEV| 41':Image Red card to Dirksen.

BET 0-1 MEV| 45+2:' D'cruze shoots and the ball goes over the crossbar. Poorly executed by the number eleven, who fails his second penalty in this league. The derby still has yellow and black colors.

BET 0-1 MEV| 45+3': Five minutes of injury time.

BET 0-1 MEV| 45+5': Looking at the replay, Fitz Dirksen never touched the ball with his hand. Instead, it hit his chest. The protests were right, but the way he insulted the referee was childish and irresponsible.

BET 0-1 MEV| 45+6': Halftime. It's Mevosa who is winning the derby, thanks a header of De La Mesea, although the home team had more clear chances and deserved a more. The hot weather is not helping to Betham's high pressure intentions and the team seemed tired at the halftime. Mevosa, on the other side, sat back in defence and waited for a counter-attack or a savior corner kick. Now, with 10 men, they will wait on their field and defend fiercely.

BET 0-1 MEV| 45': And we are back at South Lane!

BET 0-1 MEV| 45': Halftime substitution in Mevosa. Caruso enters for Koumans.

BET 0-1 MEV| 49': Rogers advances and, before the line, shoots a low cross and it finds Pittaluga alone in the penalty spot. The striker moves and shoots, but the ball goes very high.

BET 0-1 MEV| 54': A pass between lines of Escarrà finds the Mevosa's defence in bad position. Bovér runs with the ball and faces Varamoninov, who is faster and covers the shot with his right hand.

BET 0-1 MEV| 57':Image Yellow Card to Varela.

BET 0-1 MEV| 60':Image Yellow Card to Attaway.

BET 0-1 MEV| 61':Image Yellow Card to Pullian.

BET 0-1 MEV| 63': Substitution in Mevosa. Battle enters for Leavitt

BET 0-1 MEV| 63': Substitution in Betham. Van Kan enters for Pittaluga

BET 1-1 MEV| 68': GOOOOOOAAAAALLLL! Betham ties the derby! A free kick from the left, shot by Seward, goes directly to the first post, where is deflected by Rogers. Varamoninov flies and saves, but in the rebound is Castanginnet who appears to score. Now it is 1-1.

BET 1-1 MEV| 72':Image Yellow Card to D'cruze.

BET 1-1 MEV| 75': Cross of Winston is deflected by De La Mesea and is collected by Attaway. He passes to Bovér, who assists Van Kan, who shoots and the ball hits the post and goes over.

BET 1-1 MEV| 74': Substitution in Mevosa. Stern enters for Pullian.

BET 1-1 MEV| 78': Substitution in Betham. Duke replaces D'cruze.

BET 1-1 MEV| 81': Stern runs with the ball, avoids two players and advances towards the area, but Grey cuts him with a violent kick in the knee. Yenn shows him a red card, but Mevosa's players try to avenge their teammate. There are shoves, insults, nudges and punches. Even the referee falls to the grass. The substitutes of both teams enter to the pitch. It is a scandal.

BET 1-1 MEV| 84': Now both teams are in their own half separated by a dozen of policemen. The managers are trying to calm down the atmosphere, while team's doctors are helping those players with injuries. There are at least four players with blood in their faces.

BET 1-1 MEV| 88': Image Red card to Grey. Now both teams have 10 players.

BET 1-1 MEV| 89': Math resumed.

BET 1-1 MEV| 90': Last substitution in Betham. Morrison enters for Bovér.

BET 1-1 MEV| 90': Twelve minutes of injury time.

BET 1-1 MEV| 90'+2: Match delayed again. Mevosa's fans are throwing flares to the lower stand. The firemen enter to the pitch trying to turn off some flags on fire. The home fans are evacuated of the area. Now seats and stones are falling. It is clear that there are a couple of wounded. This can't continue.

BET 1-1 MEV| 90'+8: And there it is. The referee raises his arms and whistles. The match is officially abandoned. Once more, a sad finish for the derby. 1.500 policemen weren't enough to stop the violence and now the problem is to evacuate the visitors and especially the residential and commercial blocks and pedestrians.
