The Night Before Day 1 of the Raiders' Training Camp
Raiders Management Office
Norkodsav, Ontorisa
8:28 PM
General Manager Jakob Verilyier

Verilyier looked at the various files of the free agents and recently drafted players in the KMHL Entry Draft. He leaned back in his chair and puffed, looking at the ceiling now. His first training camp as the General Manager of the Raiders, and to be fair, he was only realizing he was not in Kansas, or in this case the OJL, anymore. Some of the resumes that were being brought to camp were either lack lustre, unproven or limited in information. For instance, Visia Jorksiamen was returning from a 4-year stint in the SHL, posting a career SV% of .892 over there with HV71 while Emmanuil Usmanov's time with the MJL's Qatajumi Comets was more along the lines of meh than the future star of the Raiders' defensive core. In 57 games played with the Comets, Usmanov had posted 16 points, only one of them being a goal.

According to Verilyier's three scouts he had employed (two of them were at least 75 years old), The Raiders, despite being absolutely terrible for the past few KMHL seasons, had a terrible prospect pool, with the majority of them and picks being traded away by the previous General Manager for aging veteran players, busts or mainly fringe KMHL players. Yeah, it was a busy off season for Verilyier, who had either bought out or traded the majority of these players acquired by the previous GM. Of course there was that pretty big trade right before free agency started, with the Syeir Wizards, where he was nearly steal foreigner Lennox School from the Wizards in return for only a 2017 3rd Round Pick.

There was a knock at the door. Verilyier called for the person to enter. Nearly falling out of his seat, Verilyier stood up to stand face-to-face with Ilrisk Frisejak, owner of the Norkodsav Raiders. Frisejak warmly smiled at his new General Manager before taking one of the two empty seats in front of Verilyier's desk.

"What can I do for you Mr. Frisejak?" Verilyier asked his boss, leaning back in his chair.

"I want to tell you my expectations for this season." Frisejak smiled, keeping his positive attitude. "Contend for the playoffs this year. I've invested a ton of money into your off season plans, so I'm expecting a very good run this year."

"With all due respect sir, this team is not ready. We're in a rebuilding stage, where we need to get talent through the draft. I can't fully expect us to contend for the Grajoser Cup this year, not yet." Verilyier answered, astonished at the ridiculous expectations. "Maybe in the next two years we might start to contend for the playoffs, never mind the cup itself."

"Doesn't matter, why did I hire you?" Frisejak asked Verilyier, who shuffled nervously. "Exactly, to win as many Grajoser Cups as possible."

"Mr. Frisejak-"

"Call me Ilrisk, there's not too much formality here." Frisejak leaned back, a smug look beginning to form on his face.

"Ilrisk, again, the team is not ready. If we push our young players too hard, they might crack underneath the pressure. At least consult with your hockey experts: your coaches, scouts and myself." Verilyier quickly replied. "Again, we're not ready for this year, it's not our year yet."

"Whatever." Frisejak got up, scoffing at what Verilyier said. "Contend for the cup."

He left, shutting the door behind him. Once Verilyier was sure Frisejak was out of earshot, he cursed his name. Who did he think he was? Obviously Verilyier had been hired to fix this shitty situation, but he was being treated like shit, and being given shit expectations. He huffed, before tapping the keys on his laptop, sending multiple emails out to the foreign players he had signed earlier. He knew that a few of them would make the roster right away: Bill Blanc, Johan Lindley, Lennox School, so he needed them to get settled.

Days after being traded to the Norkodsav Raiders for a 3rd Round Pick, Lennox School stared into a relatively busy Ontorisan airport. This was his fourth flight in two months. From his native Esparmuran to Norrehavn, to the Kingdom of the Polar Bear, to Syeir and now ending up in Nordkadsov or whatever it's called... the flights had taken their toll, and he still had to show up to practice tomorrow. With only a couple hockey sticks, an old laptop and the clothes on his back, he was all alone here in this foreign country. "Thirty-plus games in the World Cup of Hockey, traded in a minor league for a measly third rounder..." he thought to himself in his native Danish. Lennox knew absolutely no Estonian and his English was dodgy at best, so navigating this city, a city he knew nothing about and spoke predominately Estonian, would probably be a bit difficult. Luckily a translator was there to help him with the customs officers and his papers. Once he was out of the building, and into the pouring rain, he sat in a nearby bus stop, and opened his laptop. School checked his new e-mail account, specifically for Raiders management to use in case of an announcement. Sure enough, one message had been sent.

He recognized the name of the sender, the GM of the Raiders. He copied the message and fed it into Google Translate so he wouldn't have to bother trying to decode it himself.

"Beautiful city, hm?" he thought after hearing a fairly close crack of thunder. "But hold on, accommodations?" Nobody had come to pick him up, or at least he didn't see whoever was going to. Maybe he was supposed to wait inside?

"I wonder if these Johan and Bill guys are as unprepared as me... Xavier, huh?" He opened up the Norkodsav Raiders website and managed to find the roster. "Number sixty-five. Xavier LeBlanc. Age 29." he thought, jangling some spare Ontorisan Eckels he found in his pocket. "Well, Mr. LeBlanc. Looks like you've got a drive to make." He powered down his laptop and went back into the rain to find a payphone.

The Night Before Day 1 of the Raiders' Training Camp
105 Carritorik Avenue
Norkodsav, Ontorisa
8:31 PM
#65 Xavier LeBlanc

LeBlanc had been busy packing his gear for the training camp the next day. He had four Bauer Nexus 9000 Carbonate Sticks, stick tape, his gear such as pads, helmet and cup, gloves, skates with skate guards on them, sock tape and various other bits and pieces of his gear. He stood back, adjusting the grey brimless beanie he wore as he took at look at himself in the small living room mirror that his sister had given him. Looking like your run-of-the-mill hockey player: black hoodie, khaki shorts and flip-flops.

His home was one of the many Jellybean Houses that populated the streets of Norkodsav. It had a bathroom, two bedrooms (one guest and one master), a well-lit kitchen, a living room, small dining room and a storage room, where LeBlanc mainly kept his spare gear and pieces of stuff that he never used in well organized boxes. Playing for the Raiders for about 3 years had taught LeBlanc something: when in doubt, buy a Jellybean House. They were nice, snug and cozzy, and surprisingly roomy for their outdoor appearance.

Now, the whole deal about the Raiders hiring a new General Manager did not really appeal to LeBlanc. This guy had been an assistant coach in the OJL, the highest level of professional hockey in Ontorisa, and one of the best international hockey leagues (arguably). Thing was, because of this, this new GM probably brought that whole new way of thinking from the OJL: "enforcers are plugs, and we don't need plugs. Every guy needs to be able to shoot, score, skate and dangle sometimes". Obviously, unlike Ertie [Jakob Eritridger], LeBlanc had been attempting to work on the other aspects of hockey other than hitting, skating and beating a guy's face to a pulp. He had worked with an LSJL trainer privately to work on his wrist shot accuracy and hand-eye coordination. Before LeBlanc had known it, he was ripping fairly accurate snapshots at 93.7 mph and could keep his stick handling up for a decent amount of time before he lost control of the puck. Honestly? He was looking forward to the upcoming season, mainly because he wanted to get what the North Americans called: The Gordie Howe Hat Trick, a goal, an assist and a fight win.

His cellphone buzzed in his pocket as he answered it. No Caller ID the phone's touchscreen said as LeBlanc swiped right on the screen to answer.

"Xavier LeBlanc." LeBlanc spoke quickly in Estonian.

It had been a bit of a hectic week for William Robert Blanc, or Bill as his friends, family and fans called him for short. For a start, he found out that the Fort Checkers Elites, his team for the last few season, wouldn't be renewing his contract, despite him helping them to two consecutive Consolation Cups; in fact, they very nearly made it a third in a row this season, having won the first game of their series against Aloc IT 6-2 before losing their second game 3-1 and, thanks to a well-timed unassisted snapshot from Dane Snyman, losing 1-0 in second overtime in game three. And secondly, he had found out that he was being traded to some team he had never heard off, the Norkodsav Raiders. It wouldn't have been that bad, seeing as he wouldn't mind exploring the world and Ontorisa was on his list of places he'd like to go one day, it was just a question of whether or not he'd be able to take his cat Shrub with him. Two problems might not seem like much but, to Bill, it was how fast they came and how he wasn't sure if he had enough time to handle everything.

Fortunately for him, he did have enough time. His pet insurance would still cover Shrub, although he'd need to ask the GM about whether he'd be paying for it out of pocket or if it'll come out of his paycheck, not to mention that he would probably need to register him with a new vet. His only issue with him leaving the Fort Checkers Elites was how sudden it was, as he didn't really do anything to warrant a trade before eventually figuring that it was probably for the best. Besides, playing in a foreign country could be fun... at least, that's what he was hoping.

Fast forward a few months later, the day before his first training camp with his new club in fact. Dragging along one of those suitcases with wheels in one hand, holding a cat carrier with Shrub (who was a brave cat when he had to be put in quarantine for a couple of days) in with his other hand and a duffel bag on his back, with a strap going from his shoulder to his waist, Bill walked through the Ontorisan terminal, dressed in a jersey of his old team, a pair of of black cargo pants and a pair of black chukka boots, with a pair of Aviator sunglasses to top off the look. He wasn't sure on where he was going, since he had already eaten on the plane, he didn't need to use the bathroom and he had already done everything he needed to. So he just decided to have a little bit of a wander round, maybe see if there was anything he could do.

Eventually, when he found a place to sit down, he did just that. Putting everything on the floor, ideally around his legs so that no one would steal anything, he took out his phone and decided to check his email. Fortunately, the Norkodsav Raiders were nice enough to give him a special email address, which saves any important emails from the team being lost amongst his personal emails to family, any newsletters for things he signed up for or any junk mail that manages to escape the filter. And the first e-mail that popped up was one from the GM, reminding him (as well as a few other players) about training camp but also letting him know that he'll be staying with a team-mate from the area: Kaspar Ceritkaij (as opposed to Kaspar the Friendly Ghost). He looked at the phone number, wishing he had a pen and paper to write it down with, before closing the email and going back to his phone's main screen. Making sure he had remembered the number, he decided to call it, hoping that a) it was Kaspar on the other end, b) that he spoke English so that things would be easier of Bill (even though he actually bothered to learn Estonian before he left Elejamie) and c) that he has no problem with having pets, especially cats.

#91 Kaspar Ceritkaij

Ceritkaij was busy blasting heavy electronic dance music in his relatively small apartment complex as he got his gear together. He had done this every single time before a training camp, listened to the same playlist (with obvious moderate changes to it, subtracting and adding songs here and there). He had gotten an email from management earlier in the day, saying that he was to host an Elejamian.

Well fuck, Ceritkaij took a second to look up from his bag and took a quick surveillance of his apartment. At least I fixed the guest bedroom. Honestly, right now, Ceritkaij was sort of praying that the guy he got didn't really care that parts of the apartment still needed to be fixed up. It was a relatively cheap apartment, but Ceritkaij had used some of his SM-Liiga cash to fix it up to the best of his abilities, having the previously deteriorating wooden floors torn up and replaced with brand new hardwood, gyprock and plaster were used to fix up multiple holes in the walls, and then Ceritkaij had spent about three weeks repainting the entire damn place.

This was on top of the new furniture he had bought over the off season to make the place seem less empty. One, slightly used brown couch with matching chairs, a coffee table, a second-hand flat screen television for entertainment purposes. A double bed and a single bed, some lamps, night stands, dressers, refurbished closets. Everything had been bought, repaired or sold.

Then his phone rang. Ceritkaij fumbled his pockets for it, before turning and looking back at his dining room table. His iPhone was there, so as quickly as he could, he ran over to snatch it up, answering it quickly.

"Hello?" Ceritkaij asked the caller on the other side.

"Hello Kaspar?" Bill replied, although it was in English seeing as he wasn't sure if his Estonian was good enough. "I'm Bill Blanc, the Elejamian you're staying with. I think you got the same email as me but I'm not too sure. Anyhoo, just phoned you up to ask you a couple of questions. First up, are you coming to pick me up from the airport or am I going to get a taxi? And, secondly, are you alright with pets? 'Cause I brought my cat Shrub with me and I just wanted to make sure. Don't worry, he's a friendly cat, aren't you Shrub?"

Bill then lowered his phone down to Shrub's cage, who meowed into the phone. Bill then raised the phone to his ear before continuing. "See?"

Ceritkaij heard the English and immediately made the click in his brain. Right now he was thinking in English, everything he was doing was more English. Then he heard the mention of a cat, then a cat's meow. Fuck. Ceritkaij thought as he huffed into the phone. Who knew? A tough 31-year old grinder was like a mother when it came to his cat.

"I can come pick you up right now." Ceritkaij answered the first question as he shut off his music, grabbed his car keys and left his apartment, locking the door behind him. "I'm okay with pets, but you said it was a cat? Shit, I don't like them but I'll put up with him."

Ceritkaij held the phone to his ear as he went down a few flight of stairs before arriving outside in the refreshing August evening air. He flicked his car keys out and unlocked his 2010 Holoskam Sneaker, hoping in and connecting his phone to the car's Bluetooth so he could keep talking to Leblanc.

"What terminal are you at right now?" Ceritkaij inserted his keys and turned the car on before pulling out into the evening traffic.

It was kind of nice for Johan Lindley to go somewhere where he wasn't recognized. In Underfell, he was a celebrity of sorts. The draft pick that was supposed to be a steal for his hometown team, but ended up being a failure because of something he didn't do. Not that the media in Underfell cared about facts. They were willing to believe everything that his psychotic ex girlfriend claimed, all because it would make a big story that would get them readers. It didn't matter to them that it would cost him his rookie season. But this was a fresh start. Nobody here knew his name, and that was a good thing. He saw from the email that he would be staying with someone else, which annoyed him. He was more of a solitary person, one who might be described as antisocial. That antisocial personality was part of the reason why everyone believed the media when they decided to ruin his reputation. As he finally arrived at his new apartment, he put down the bag that had his gear and a couple Estonian books and reached into his pocket for his keys, unlocking the door and stepping inside. This was it, this was his new home. "A fresh start... Finally," he muttered, placing his bag on the table. Only time would show if this fresh start would help or hurt him.

As soon as Kramaas heard the door open, he stood up immediately in his bed room. Before Lindley had even arrived at his place, Kramaas had been listening to a radio podcast discussing the OJL, specifically trade bait, the up coming opening season and who to look out for. Lying on his bed with headphones on, Kramaas listened to the banter between four grown men in some up-scale studio in Tetorosburg probably. Then the front door opened and slammed shut.

Pausing the podcast, Kramaas took off his head phones and opened up his bedroom door. There he was, Johan Lindley, apparently Kramaas' new defensive partner. Typically, defensive partners who roomed together developed a close knit on and off ice chemistry and eventually became each others' best friends. Hopefully this would turn out here as well.

"Hey man," Kramaas extended his hand to Lindley. "I'm Tealmos, welcome to Apartment Suite 305."

Just as Bill was about to thank him for picking him up from the airport, Kaspar mentioned that he doesn't like cats. Fortunately, Bill doesn't have any problems with people who don't like cats, since his younger brother Ted - who's a hooker for the Mainsborough Delphi rugby union club in Division One of the Rugby Conference - is allergic to them. However, it was just a question over whether or not his housemate would grow to like Shrub or if Bill would have to find another place to stay, preferably with someone who didn't have any problem with cats. "And don't worry about Shrub, alright?" He reassured the person that he would be staying with for the time being. "I've written down a list of what to do with him. And he's also an indoors cat, so you don't have to let him out."

And then, once he was in the car and on his way to the airport, he asked where Bill was. "I'm at terminal two." He replied, looking up at a sign on a wall that said just that. Fortunately, he didn't really pack that heavy - mostly clothes and cat stuff in his suitcase, his hockey equipment (like sticks, pucks and tape) in the duffel bag and, of course, Shrub the cat in his carrier - so Kaspar probably wouldn't have to make a lot of room in his car. Getting all of his stuff together, he then said "I'm gonna go outside now and wait for you there, alright? I'll see you when you get here. OK, bye." He then hung up and put his phone back into his pocket. He then sighed as he got up, picking up his stuff and walking over to the exit, wondering how long Kaspar would be.

"I'm at terminal two. I'm gonna go outside now and wait for you there, alright? I'll see you when you get here. OK, bye."

"Alright, I'll meet you there then." Ceritkaij said before Blanc hung up. Terminal 2. Norkodsav Domestic Airport. Gotcha. He switched lanes into the left hand lane, speeding past a few cars before shifting back into the right lane. He would be a few minutes, but that was no problem.

Traffic was light, surprisingly, usually there would be sort of a rush hour near the airport around this time of the day. Ceritkaij carefully navigated his way through the endless streams of cars heading towards the airport, shifting into an underground tunnel that led to Terminal 2, Arrivals. As the car passed through the brightly lit tunnel before moving upwards to a relatively small portion of the airport where various taxis and cars were waiting along with people with suitcases and empty baggage carts, Caritkaij found an empty spot and parked his car.

Getting out, he looked around, unsure on how to signal Blanc. Thinking quickly, he locked his car before walking down the sidewalk where everyone was waiting, looking for Blanc, calling out his name once or twice in case if the man heard him.

After hearing his name, Bill walked up to Kaspar, let go of the suitcase with wheels and held out his hand. "Bill Blanc. I'm guessing you're Kaspar Ceritkaij?" Bill asked, saying Kaspar's last name slowly just in case he was pronouncing it correctly. After a few seconds, by which point his hand was back at his , Bill then moved his hand over to Shrub's carrier, resting his hand on top of it. "And this is Shrub, my cat. Say hello to the nice man, Shrub." Bill said in an affectionate voice as the cat meowed again. Bill then stuck one of his fingers through the grate and stroked Shrub under the chin, who purred in response. "Shall we go to your car, then?" He asked, going back to his normal voice.

Eventually, Bill stopped stroking Shrub and the two walked over to the car. He put everything down on the ground, since he was about to load things into the car. Hopefully there'll be enough room in the trunk for both the suitcase and the duffel bag; if not, then one will have to sit in the back seat. And, of course, the cat carrier will be placed on his lap for him to carry on the way back to Kaspar's apartment. However, just as he got it all figured out, he quickly asked "Have you got any cat food, cat litter, litter trays? Anything like that? Because, if you don't, we might need to stop off somewhere so we can get all that. Don't worry about beds, since he could sleep on mine or we could just use a cardboard box and a blanket for him."

#91 Kaspar Ceritkaij

"Yeah man, comment ca-va right?" Ceritkaij shook Blanc's hand before grabbing a few of Blanc's bags and helping him move them back to Ceritkaij's car.

The minute Blanc mentioned the cat, Ceritkaij felt the pang of slight frustration. He wasn't a big fan of cats, in fact, he's only had bad run in with them. Couple of bites and scratches here and there plus a few presents on his stuff whenever he visited his sister or parents. Shaking his head, Ceritkaij helped load Blanc's stuff into his car, pushing down the three backseats in order to allow for more room. Eventually, once they had sorted everything out, Blanc finally dropped the question Ceritkaij had been dreading:

"Have you got any cat food, cat litter, litter trays? Anything like that? Because, if you don't, we might need to stop off somewhere so we can get all that. Don't worry about beds, since he could sleep on mine or we could just use a cardboard box and a blanket for him."

"I, um, don't. Sorry man, not a big fan of cats either. I didn't realize you would've had one coming with you." Ceritkaij looked down at the cat, Shrub, in slight distaste before looking back at Blanc. "I mean, I don't mind your cat, and I guess we could see if any pet stores are open right now, but it's almost 9 so I doubt we'll be able to grab anything."

Ceritkaij nodded to himself before motioning for Blanc to hop in with his cat, as he shut the trunk's door. Moving to the driver's side of the car, Ceritkaij opened up the door and stepped in, plugging in his phone to the car's auxiliary cord and swiping through his phone, past a couple of texts before opening up to his music app.

Bill didn't really react much when Kaspar said that he didn't like cats. Again, he understood that not everyone liked them and, in a few cases, he could understand why. Fortunately, if this job with the Norkdosav Raiders paid reasonably well, Bill could save a bit of money here and there to buy his own place so that Kaspar wouldn't have to put up with Shrub for too much longer. Of course, the downside is that he'd have to find someone who'd have to look after his cat whilst he was at practice or at a game but he could worry about that later. For now, it was just a matter of getting to practice and games alright and hoping that Kaspar will at least make an effort to get along with Shrub.

And then Kaspar said that he doesn't have any cat stuff, mostly because he wasn't told about it. and they might have to find a pet store that's still open. After thinking about this, because he was sure he told the club to tell whoever he was living with that he was bringing a pet, he then replied "Not a problem." He then put Shrub's carrier down on the ground and then he got in the car. He picked the carrier back up and rested it on his lap as he closed the door. "Sorry about this." He then said as he put the carrier down on Kaspar's lap so he could put his seatbelt on. Once Bill was buckled up, he picked the carrier back up and put it down on his lap. "As I was going to say: If we can't find a pet store, there should be a supermarket selling it. After all, it worked back home so I don't see why it won't work over here. And we could just find something around the house for a litter tray." He then moved his seat around so he got it as he liked it and then he waited to Kaspar to start the car and take the two to their next destination, whether it be a pet store, a supermarket or back home.

"I mean," Ceritkaij muttered as he pulled the car out of park and began driving back towards Norkodsav. "I could call up one of the boys and see if they have a cage or something for your cat at least. I'd prefer not to wake up and see a giant pile of shit in the middle of my living room, y'know? Hahaha."

Ceritkaij turned his head back and looked at the cat. It was the least he could do for the new guy he guessed. As he made his way onto the highway, Ceritkaij slowly cranked the volume on his car, blasting some heavy rap music as he swerved into the left hand lane. Not the way he had planned his night to turn out, but still it was better than just sitting at home and watching television all night.

Rather than be amused by Kaspar's joke, Bill simply glared at him without saying a word. In fact, he would've given his new flatmate a slap around the back of the head if it weren't for the fact that he was the one driving. So Bill eventually decided to humourlessly correct Kaspar. "Which is why we need a litter tray and cat litter." He said. "Shrub's a house-trained cat, so he can do his business in there and one of us could just scrape it off into the bin and put in some fresh litter once he's done. I could even teach you if you want, especially if he does a shit and I'm not there to clean up."

Eventually, they made it onto the highway, where Kaspar turned up the rap music he was listening to. Bill wasn't a big fan of rap music; he tolerated it being in the background but wasn't that big on the genre when he had to listen to it. He could turn it off and remind his new flatmate to concentrate on the road; however, that would probably mean getting on Kaspar's nerves, which probably isn't a good idea especially since the two would have to live together for a while. So, instead, he decided to reach over to the stereo and turn it down. So that it won't seem out of the blue or anything like that, Bill then decided to ask something. "Do you have satellite or cable or Wi-Fi? Because I might want to check on the rugby back home."

Ceritkaij snorted at LeBlanc's statement about his cat. The guy had some jokes, some personality at least, which was fun to have around the team. Ceritkaij nodded to LeBlanc, agreeing with the statement before he got into the right lane of the highway, exiting on a ramp, heading towards Norkodsav. As he exited the ramp, he drove onto a dimly lit road and continued down the stretch before the lights of downtown Norkodsav. As the car rolled along the late night traffic, Ceritkaij then listened in onto LeBlanc's question.

"Do you have satellite or cable or Wi-Fi? Because I might want to check on the rugby back home."

"Yeah I have WiFi, mainly use it for Netflix but it doesn't really matter." Ceritkaij looked over and smiled at LeBlanc. "Welcome to Norkodsav bro."

The glimmer of the city was a welcome sight after Ceritkaij spent a day preparing himself in his apartment. He had the car cruise down various streets, looking for an open pet store. After a long period of searching, it was clear that no store would be opened at this hour. Turning the car around, Ceritkaij started driving back to his Jellybean Apartment.

"Sorry man, looks like none of the stores are open." Ceritkaij murmured to LeBlanc as he continued to drive.
