Welcome to Ethane

Ethane, also known by the chemical formula attributed to its name, is a democratic, left-leaning, liberal state located in the region of Esportiva, home to 20 million people. Having recently gone through a period of change, with the long-standing Liberal-Democratic Party, a centrist party committed to increasing defence spending and the economy to the detriment of the environment and social security, being voted out in favour of the left-wing Greener Ethane party, who are more committed to improving the environment, the nation has begun a shift back towards more greener and more pacifist legislation, with reductions to the military going into education.

The capital city of Ethane is New Sarum, which is home to 1 million inhabitants, and is adjacent to the major tourist site of Old Sarum, also near to StoneHedge. There are many cities and towns scattered around the nation, spread out, with the largest city located about 250 miles from New Sarum, in Swanmouth, home to 1.2 million people.

Ethane is famous in many ways, notably for its sporting appearances, which has seen the nation start to become recognised in sporting fields around the world, as well as its performances at Worldvision and the World Hit Festival. The nation is also known for its high living standards, strong economy, specialising in Information Technology, in which it has one of the largest of the IT sectors in Esportiva, and Publishing, its educational standards, and its move towards green energy, which the government is aiming for a 100% renewables in the next 25 years. It is currently around 40% renewable energy.

Transportation
The transport in Ethane benefits from high levels of government funding which benefit the quality of service, with private companies also consolidating the transport network in Ethane. Most of the large cities in Ethane have strong public transport links within them, heavily subsidised buses being the most commonly used way to get around. Also in the two main cities, New Sarum and Swanmouth, eco-friendly modes of transport are also available to be used, including bikes which can be hired and dropped off at later stages along your cycling route.

Bus services also cover most moderately sized towns, with rural areas and small towns and villages being covered by less regular bus services which operate out of a main town or city nearby. There are many long-distance routes also available in Ethane, between many of the major cities and towns, which often stop at rural locations to increase the coverage of the bus service.

Trains also provide a viable option for transport in Ethane, connecting many of the main cities and towns, and providing a cheap, fast, and environmentally friendly way to travel around Ethane. ChemRail provides a fast and reliable train journey between stations, but if you are looking for better quality, or high-speed trains then the best place to look is towards the private companies. The rails have all been electrified, providing an environmentally friendly way of transporting people around the nation.

For longer haul journeys from other nations, we do have a few airports across the country, albeit they are fairly small due to the regulations placed on plane emissions. HITAir provides a strong service to many major countries around the multiverse, with regular flights allowing fans to stream in for the championships. Most transport is state owned in Ethane, so the if the quality is not as expected, feel free to complain to the government.

Hotels
With the tourist industry booming once again, hotels are once again back in action, with a range of places for those visiting to stay. From 2* hotels to 5* hotels, we strive to provide you with the best accommodation possible. There is the option of either going state funded hotels, or you can go with the private sector.

Food and Drink
There are many places to eat in Ethane, with many restaurants and fast food chains all over Ethane. There are multiple places you can eat at, including the locally born restaurant and fast food chain, Treaters, who have recently signed a contract with Superchaps of Oisinistan to open a load of their franchises in Ethane, providing an even larger range of food to eat. With multiple food venues across the country, you are sure to find something to your liking.

Entertainment
There are many things you can do while in Ethane for entertainment away from the World Junior Hockey Championships.

In New Sarum, we have multiple cinema and bowling complexes for the enjoyment of our visitors and residents alike, which are often relatively popular. There are many other entertainment complexes in New Sarum as well, which more can be found out about in the tourist information centre. Nearby to New Sarum, you have the historic castle fort of Old Sarum, which provides a good day out, as it is located in the centre of a large wildlife reserve, which is a place where you can often see rare animals lurking about. StoneHedge is also popular and nearby to New Sarum, providing a good family afternoon out, with activities for everyone, and special events running throughout the tournament.

Swanmouth also provides visitors with a great many visitor attractions to visit as well as entertainment complexes. The city itself is also only a 45 minute bus journey away from one of Ethane's finest national parks, the Glade Forest. This provides a good place for walks, as well as adventurous activities and bike hire, as well as being a good place for camping holidays. Further away from this event, you have the fairly mountainous regions of the nation, especially on the island, which provide spectacular views for those visiting, and can have snow on in the winter for skiing.

Ice Hockey in Ethane

Ice Hockey is a sport that so far, has not particularly caught on with the people of Ethane. There are a few teams - hence why we have some ice hockey stadiums to use for this tournament, who have a loyal fan base in Ethane, but as can be seen by the fact that one of the stadiums is in a football stadium, the following in Ethane is not that great. The hope with this tournament taking place in Ethane is for the people interested in this sport to be boosted, in the hope of eventually setting up a small ice hockey league in Ethane.

Team History

Games Played: 6
Team Record 1-5
The Ethane Fire Youth Ice Hockey Team have not had the best run through tournaments so far in their history. Having only competed in 1 tournament (as they were established not long previous to the last World Junior Hockey Championships, which were held in The Sword Bloke), they do not have the wealth of experience of the other teams, and they have not had the successes as of yet either, finishing last in the group in the WJHC X, winning only 1 of their 6 games. This tournament being in their home country, in Ethane, is bound to help them to some extent, but if the same team which performed so poorly last time emerges at this tournament, then they will be in the trouble.

Team Summary

The Ethane Fire team are very much a defensive team in the style of the game they play, focusing on slogging out the game and getting a few points here and there, while preventing their opposition from scoring. However, when they do attack, they are extremely explosive in speed, heavily relying on the counter attack against very skilled teams, with strong skaters in the middle of the rink to take the puck to the offensive players.

In=character, Kaboomlandia is a World Assembly member and abides by its resolutions. If this nation isn't in the WA, it's for practical reasons.

Hockey is the number one sport in Novaya Zemlya and the nation is ranked in the top 10 at the senior level. The junior team, however, has two straight group stage exits at the WJHC, so noone knows quite what to expect.

After a disastrous showing at WJHC 9 in Vermark, the Hockey Federation fired head coach Bratislav Yurakin. Kaboomlandian Paul Saxton was brought in to replace him. In Saxton's first tournament, WJHC 10, the team won 3 games and lost 2 (including a notable OT loss to Ficiscia, coached by Bratislav Yurakin), and failed to advance from Group C.

This year's team features 14 returning players. There is a lot of talent on the top two lines, most notably Dynamo winger Zigurds Zimulis, who is making his third WJHC appearance, and center Valeri Kalagin, arguably the most hyped Novozemlyan forward prospect since Dominik Shelagin. Meanwhile, the third and fourth lines are decidedly less exciting, consisting mostly of hard working two-way players without elite game-breaking skill. On the blueline, Miloš Jankovic is expected to play big minutes and quarterback the main PP unit.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose My Scorers: Sure
Godmod Scoring Events: Creative, please.
RP Injuries to My Players: Sure, TG me in advance though [No career ending injuries or anything too severe]
Godmod Injuries to My Players: Sure
RP Penalties for My Players: Sure, TG me first please [No fighting or anything that could result in really bad bans, unless if we work something out via TG]
RP Ejections for My Players: No
Godmod Other Events: No
Style: +2.00

Playing Style: The ideas of the Junior Team is to play to the best of their abilities, which usually consists of spreading out their opponent's defence before rushing with the puck. The strategies consist of discipline and excellent stick-handling. Overall: play fast, play hard, play skilled and take the body when you have to.

Notable Prospects: Basically anyone in this list is someone to watch out for during the tournament

MJL - Mountain Hockey League
SJL - Island Hockey League
OUJL - Ontorisan University Hockey League
ENHL - Eglasouran National Hockey League
HZE - Heratoian Ice Hockey Association
KFAC106 - Kejian National Hockey League

Forwards

SNP - Sniper - An accurate and offensive player who sacrifices team play in order to push for that goal that the team needs. As well, snipers tend to not be very physical.

PWF - Power Forward - A good mix between a scorer and a hitter. Power Forwards are not afraid to lay out the body but can also put the puck in the back of the net as well.

PLY - Playmaker - Players who want to move the puck effectively and don’t care too much about giving up the body and not being able to make a hit

TWF - Two-Way Forward - A well balanced build for players who want to be responsible defensively. A great hitter and great at taking faceoffs

GRD - Grinder - A tough player who plays with an edge. Incredibly fast and can make life hard on defense with an aggressive forecheck.

ENF - Enforcer - A player who can’t wait to drop the gloves. Takes the body any chance he gets. His job is get in the other team’s face and just be aggressive in general

Defence

OFD - Offensive Defenceman - Tends to be an active element in both the offensive and defensive aspects of hockey, but can be counted on to be out of position due to the love of carrying the puck and being on offence.

DFD - Defensive Defenceman - A shut down guy who can lower the boom on players with his size and strength.

TWD - Two-Way Defenceman - Can play both sides of the puck. Much like the two-way forward, the two-way d-man is pretty solid in all categories with no stand outs and not many serious flaws.

END - Enforcer Defenceman - Loves to lay the body and make players pay for their decisions. Can count on these guys intimidating the other team but not doing much of anything else.

Goalie

HYB - Hybrid - A mix between the traditional butterfly and stand-up, where the goalie focuses more on athleticism, reaction, save selection and positioning to make saves rather than just using their body. Most common style of hockey goal tending today.

BUT - Butterfly - The style where goalies go down on both pads with their toes pointing outwards and the tops of their pads meeting in the middle, thus closing up the five hole. This results in a "wall" of padding without any holes, lowering the chances of low angle shots getting in. These goalies rely on timing and position.

STU - Stand-Up - The style, goaltenders are to stop the puck from a standing position, not going down. The goalies may bend over to stop the puck with their upper body or may kick the puck. Such saves made by kicking are known as kick saves or skate saves. They may also simply use their stick to stop it, known as a stick save.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT

This is Abanhfleft's fifth time participating in World Junior Hockey Championships. My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose My Scorers: Sure
Godmod Scoring Events: Creative, please.
RP Injuries to My Players: Sure, TG me in advance though (Ontorisa) [Obviously no deaths or career ending injuries]
Godmod Injuries to My Players: No
RP Penalties for My Players: Maybe, TG me first please (Ontorisa) [Obviously nothing too severe. Cauja does not tend to drop the gloves]
RP Ejections for My Players: No
Godmod Other Events: No
Style: -1.00

Playing Style: The ideas of the Junior Team is to be incredibly defensive. As a result, the team tends to move to puck a lot more and make more crisp passes, as well as cycle the puck more when in the offensive zone. Cauja's best players tend to be their towering defence men. As well, Cauja's game is a very physical and can grind down any team if given the chance.

Notable Prospects:

Unfamiliar League Names (just in case)
PJJL - Peninsular Junior Ice Hockey League
CUKJO - Caujan University Athletic Association: Ice Hockey Division
RJJL - National Junior Hockey League (Ontorisa)

"THERE ARE NO EXCUSES"
We met with Novozemlyan blueliner Spas Bukhalov to discuss the upcoming WJHC

SWANMOUTH If you had asked hockey people a year ago, chances are noone would have heard of Spas Bukhalov. Now, the 19 year old Zvezda Rozhnovgorsk defenseman has a NZEL season under his belt and is ready to represent his country at the World Juniors in Ethane. Where did he come from?

When Zvezda surprisingly won promotion to the Elite League in season 25, it was with a core of homegrown talent. Bukhalov was one of them, last year's WJHC goalie Maksimilian Skryabin was another.

#25 SPAS BUKHALOV
Position: Defenseman
Age: 19
Club: Zvezda
Birthplace: Skalistaya, NZE
Shoots: Right
Height: 191 cm / 6' 3"
Weight: 92 kg / 203 lb
"We have great coaches over there," Bukhalov says. "All through the youth teams, junior teams, the men's team, there's people there who help you develop as a player."

Perhaps surprising for some, Bukhalov has a lot of positive things to say about Novaya Zemlya's Division II, a league otherwise known as hockey's backyard with low attendance numbers, financial problems and gruesome bus rides.

"I learned a ton from playing in the second division before we got to the NZEL," he said. "It's a step up from the junior league for sure, but it's not as fast as the Elite League and not every single mistake you make ends up with a goal against."

As to why he didn't make last years WJHC team? "I have no idea," Bukhalov said, laughing. "Maybe they forgot to scout out east or something. I hear the federation has a tight budget."

As a player, Bukhalov is calm and composed well beyond his age, and rarely makes a poor decision with the puck. He has good mobility for a guy his size, and excels at moving opposing forwards out of the crease. Scouts have described him as a two-way defenseman, although Bukhalov himself feels that he needs to work on his offensive game.

"I'm not a flashy player," he says. "And my shot could be better, it's something that I have worked on in the off-season."

When asked if he has any rolemodels, he mentions Shakhter's veteran Enver Anoshkin. "He is a monster. Best hitter in the league, without question. He's a cool guy as well, I remember he came to our summer hockey school once when I was a kid. He signed an autograph for me, I still have it somewhere."

What about expectations for the World Juniors? "We have a good team, we really should advance from the group this time," Bukhalov responds. "There are no excuses."

"Saxton [Paul] held individual meetings with every player," he adds. "He said he expects me to be one of the leaders on the ice. I'll play with Miloš [Jankovic] and we are going up against the opposition's top lines. I look forward to it, I'm the kind of player that gets better the more responsibility I get."

The Cauja-Ontorisa Connection
The connection between Cauja and Ontorisa continues by having the very first Caujan-Ontorisan player play on the international stage for Cauja

Written By: Artrida Falascor

Caujasburg - Every young hockey player dreams of playing in the major leagues, representing their country or both. This is the exact case of Caujan-born, Ontorisan native Frik Halijerit. Despite having Ontorisan blood run through his veins, Halijerit has always identified as a Caujan, being born in the small town of Auziak, about 13 kilometres north of Caujasburg.

Drafted in the 2nd Round (41st Overall) of the 2014 KFAC106 Import Draft, Halijerit has been mostly playing with the Pana 82's, raking up 71 points in 66 games played. Projected to be drafted in the 3rd Round of the 96th OJL Entry Draft, this has been an opportunity Halijerit has been eyeing for a long, long time.

"Ever since I was a kid growing up in Auziak, just watching professional hockey in Cauja was breathtaking enough. I thought these guys were the best in the world, and well, they're the best in the country. Of course when I went to Ontorisa for a vacation, I discovered the OJL and how much potential I could bring home to Cauja." Halijerit spoke to the Caujasburg Tribune in an interview.

With both teams gearing up for the WJHC, all eyes are on the fledgling Caujan team, and how well it can perform against the more estbalished teams like the Ethan, Novaya Zemlya and Ontorisa. With the majority of their players coming from their University and Junior leagues, expectations are relatively low for the team, but a win or two would send everyone into a frenzy.

TEAM INFORMATION

The Ficiscian team has a strong offense, focussing on skating and passing. Their players are traditionally fast and skilled skaters, while they tend to be on the smaller side physically. In consequence, the Ficiscian game is not a very hard-hitting one, instead they try to defend with clever positioning and fast movement. The offense often passes around for quite some time until they find a gap, especially on the powerplay. Fighting is uncommon in Ficiscia and only done in case of an attack to the goaltender or an action players see as unfair. Usually it is rather pushing and shoving than a one on one brawl. Likely to get into fights of this kind are all defenders, likely one on one fighters are Navi and Ianicevis.

Elejamian national junior men's ice hockey team
Selección sub-20 de hockey sobre hielo de Elejamia

Following the senior team's WCoH29 win in Quebec, the EIHB (Elejamian Ice Hockey Board) has announced that Elejamie will return for the 11th World Junior Hockey Championships, having missed the 10th won hosted and won by The Sword Bloke. Indeed, most of the team are returnees from the controversial 9th WJHC hosted by Vermark, including half-Quebecois captain Stacy Saunders and George Berg, whose brother Peter is a goalie for the senior side. However, a few newcomers from Elejamie's U-18 team, who took part in the IHT tournament over in Ontorisa last year, have also been selected as part of Pablo Acuña's 26-man squad, including potential tough guy Deni Naemilan, goaltender Adrian Lambert and Mike Martins, who was chosen as part of the WJHC9 squad but didn't see any action on the ice. Also worthy of mentioning is that a couple of fresh faces will also make their first appearance here, including Mark de Vente, whose grand-uncle Perry was a star goaltender for the Edgebaston Shamrocks, Ángeles de la Playa de Rocas and Elejamie during the mid-late 70s and early 80s. Will Elejamie be able to shake off that poor performance and take home the trophy? Or will the junior squad call it a day? Only time will tell...

If you're wondering why this looks better than my WCoH30 kit: It's because the 3D designer I was using now has shorts (or pant shells as I should be calling them) and because I found out that you can save them as pictures, which is a whole lot easier than taking screenshots and editing them in Pixlr.

Please note that, apart from Stacy Saunders (who's already been snatched up), all of my players are draft eligible. So just let me know, whether it be by RP or TG, which one you want and all the details.

HomeFiller Arena, Coventry, AVEN

Built in 1989, the HomeFiller Arena is also known as the Coventry Arena, especially in situations where HomeFiller isn't sponsoring the event in question. With a total capacity of 17,000, it is also home to the Coventry Puffins; the backup stadium for the national team; home to the junior and U-18 teams; and the Coventry Nets basketball team. It entered a sponsorship deal with furniture store HomeFiller in 2013. The deal is expected to last until 2017.

Rosetta Royal House (Rosate Royalhus), Rosetta (Rosate), ROIY

Home to the Rosetta Royals (Rosate Royal) ice hockey team and backup stadium to the Junior and U-18 ice hockey teams. It was also the home to the Rosetta Devils (Rosate Dafil) basketball team until they moved to Devils Stadium (Dafil Sataed) in 2014. About 14,000 people can sit down and watch a hockey game; fortunately, Rosetta is a bilingual tract (both English and Iyilim are spoken here), meaning fans don't have to worry about learning a second language to find their way around.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose My Scorers: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to My Players: Yes (the longest they can be out for is two matches)
Godmod Injuries to My Players: Yes
RP Penalties for My Players: Yes
RP Ejections for My Players: Yes (the longest they can be suspended for is one match)
Godmod Other Events: It depends on what it is. Fights I'm OK with, since Ethane's OK with it. Killing is definitely out. If you want to be safe, feel free to send me a TG with what you want to do.

  • Arik's name is pronounced "Eh-REEK Ah-ruh-neh" and Deni's is "Dah-nee Nay-mee-lehn". Just in case anyone asks.
  • The Iyilim translation for "Elejamian national junior men's ice hockey team" - "Ah-lah-YEHM uh-neh-dah dyoo-nehl mahn ees-hoh-kee teem" - literally means "Elejamie under two-zero mans ice hockey team". Again, just in case.
  • Stacy Saunders is still a guy. So please don't call him a "her" during your RP.
  • If you want to include a fight, try and see if you can fit in Ben Waring, Tom Stonehaven, Rafael Espinosa, Deni Naemilan, George Berg and Dave O'Neill somewhere.
  • To those who are RPing and have posted a roster: I will probably be sending you a TG asking for RP info (just in case you have something planned and it's different to what I have in mind). You don't have to reply to it, especially if you choose not to RP the match in question. But, if you do want to reply to it, please get back to me by at least an hour and a half before cut-off.
  • Any problems, concerns, questions, et cetera? Shoot me a TG and I'll either fix what's bothering you or try to explain myself.

"... Over in sport, it was the first day of the World Junior Hockey Championships, so it's over to John Daverson. John?"

That's right, Steve! Good morning, Elejamie! Our junior hockey team got their tournament off to a great start when they beat Esparmuran 3-0. The Ice-a-phants, who were hoping to bounce back from the controversial 9th tournament, managed to do so with style as captain Stacy Saunders netted two goals and assisted the third. As a result, Elejamie have now taken the top spot and are looking forward to their next game. Here are the highlights:

The first period got off to an exciting start as Elejamie very nearly went 1-0 up thanks to a snapshot by Miguel Trujillo. However, it was saved and, even when it lead to a faceoff, Elejamie were unable to put one in the net. Fortunately, their big break came when, seven minutes after the first face-off, an ill-timed line-change meant that Esparmuran was given a bench penalty. On the resulting power play, Stacy Saunders opened up the scoring with a snap shot, assisted by . Esparmuran came very close to levelling the scores three minutes later when this slap shot was just deflected by Elejamian goaltender Michael Bosch. And, speaking of close calls, check out this Arik Eruna snapshot five minutes from time, where the Espar goalie just managed to get a glove to it before it crossed the line. Eventually, the score ended 1-0 in Elejamie's favour.

The second period was a very close affair as both sides saw plenty of good scoring opportunities. Less than thirty seconds after the start of the period, Stacy Saunders was denied a second goal when, as he tried to deke the puck into the net, the opposing goalie managed to get his legs down in time, causing it to bounce off his pads. Seven minutes later, an Espar slapshot bounced off the crossbar, with Bosch just getting a glove on the rebound. Not long later, Elejamie were down a player when Tom Stonehaven was given a two minute minor for clipping, although fortunately Elejamie's PK unit managed to prevent Esparmuran from equalising. Shortly before the end, Elejamie were denied a chance to extend their lead when the klaxon went just as Joel Evenson's slapshot crossed the line, disallowing it. Either way, the Ice-a-phants were still ahead 1-0 and, although they were starting to feel a bit of heat, they were still hoping to keep their cool.

The third period got things going right off the bat when, less than a minute after the opening face-off, Stacy Saunders managed to intercept the puck and managed to get it past the goalie off of a backhand. As a result, the Ice-a-phants were now 2-0 up and things were looking comfortable for them. Indeed, even when Deni Naemilan was given a two minute minor for cross-checking just as his shift started, Esparmuran weren't able to put one on the board, with their best shot being halfway through the period, when the puck just bounced off of the bar and Bosch got a glove to it before they did. However, despite their best efforts, Elejamie were struggling to make it a third; in fact, this shot from Bill Townsend had to be disallowed as linemate Rafael Espinosa was offside. However, with 12.9 seconds remaining on the clock, they managed to put the final nail in the coffin when Harrison Blackburn slammed the puck into the Espar's empty net off of Saunders' one-timer, with Mike Martins also being credited as an assist. Team Espar had a very good chance to pull one back in the closing seconds, although they were unable to do something with the puck as goaltender Michael Bosch managed to deflect it with his stick. Bill Sutton managed to carry it to safety when the klaxon sounded, finishing Elejamie's opener with a 3-0 shutout victory and high hopes going into their second.

Although head coach Pablo Acuña was unavailable for a post-match interview, we did manage to get hold of captain Stacy Saunders. When asked for his thoughts on the match, he replied "I ain't going to lie, that was actually a pretty darn tough game! Their offence might've been a bit off-target but their defence was really solid. They managed to counter my deking, blocked plenty of shots that would've definitely gone in, all that sort of stuff. But I must admit that I'm happy with the result, the guys are as well and we're hoping to keep this up for game two. Stay tuned!"

Meanwhile, in the other group matches of the day, Ficiscia managed to get their campaign off to a great start with a 5-2 win over the Republic of Arkan, whereas Cauja managed to scrape by with a 2-1 victory over the United States of Devonta. Due to Elejamie's shutout victory, they rest easily on top of the group, shortly followed by Ficiscia. Cauja rounds off the top three, shortly followed by Devonta. And, in joint last place, we've got Esparmuran and the Republic of Arkan. Tomorrow will see Esparmuran attempting to bounce back from their poor opening performance as they take on the United States of Devonta, if Ficiscia seeing if they can take the top spot as they play Cauja and, most importantly of all, if Elejamie will be hoping to retain it when they face the Republic of Arkan. Will they be able to do it? Find out tomorrow on Puck Drop!

Elsewhere in the tournament, Novaya Zemlya kicked things into high gear with a 6-1 thrashing of Joplax. Back in The Sword Bloke, the Novozemlyans finished group C in third place, just being edged out by Gregoryisgodistan on point difference...

WORLD JUNIOR HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS XI
JOPLAX 1–6 NOVAYA ZEMLYA
GROUP B

The Pioneers are off to a good start at the World Junior Hockey Championships in Ethane, winning the opening game in Group B against Joplax 6 goals to 1. Follow the Journal online for full WJHC coverage.

PLAYER NOTES - GAME 1
The top line, with Valeri Kalagin, Zigurds Zimulis and Mikhail Dostovalov had a great game. There seems to be some early chemistry developing with these three. When Kalagin gets time and space he is able to tear the defending team apart with his passes. He set up Zimulis for two nice goals, and potted one on his own. Dostovalov could have netted a couple as well if it weren't for some excellent Joplax goaltending.

The second line had some good moments, but there is room for improvement. Oleg Kazarezov oozes skill, but needs to be stronger on the puck. He was outmuscled a couple times and lost a few too many puck battles. Timur Untilov has great wheels and looked dangerous on the rush, whereas Akim Kurtanidze looked slightly hungover, but still managed to get himself on the score sheet with a power play marker.

The third and fourth lines had good, albeit unspectacular games. It is evident that head coach Paul Saxton wants these guys to play a simple, grinding game, which they did. Dusan Bakalski impressed the most, strong on the boards and kept his feet moving, drawing penalties left and right. Demian Shurshalin was dominant in the faceoff circle. Ilya Krysov looked a little slow.

On the backend, Miloš Jankovic came as advertised, eating minutes and dictating the pace of the game. He also opened the scoring with a one-timer on the PP. The defense as a whole had a good night, as they were quick to fend off the Joplacian forecheck and move the puck up ice. Although, the third pairing had a few shifts when they were hemmed in the defensive zone. Artem Galerkin was caught flat-footed a couple of times and took a bad interference penalty. Denis Yeshugov looked nervous and shaky at times, but improved as the game went on.

Goaltender Boris Permyakov did not have a busy night, but looked solid when called upon.

The coaching staff gets full marks for this one. Paul Saxton is a former PP coach for the Kaboomlandian national team, and you can tell he knows what he is doing on the man advantage. Both Novozemlyan PP units were having a field day in the Joplacian zone. Let's hope this trend continues.

SCORING SUMMARY - NOVAYA ZEMLYA

NEXT GAME
Next game is tonight against Nassau-Hessen, which will likely be a tougher challenge. The Nassauites/Hessians narrowly lost their opener against Abanhfleft 1-0. Novaya Zemlya and Nassau-Hessen have faced each other once before at the World Juniors, in what was the Pioneers first ever WJHC game. It was back in WJHC 8 in Quebec, and Novaya Zemlya won 5-0.

FNSN.fc Hockey: WJHC win followed by draw, Ducantus shines

After the 5-2 opening win against The Republic of Arkan, Ficiscia followed up with a draw against Cauja where the star was once again 20 year old captain and Antiqua Lumières winger Janus Ducantus. He had shined in the first game with a goal and two assists to linemates Licius and Jonnssenn, and was part of both goals in the crucial third period against Cauja. The Ficiscians proved to have some difficulties with the tough Caujan defense that didn't let them play their usual passing style, and by the end of the first period their opponents had several counter attack chances. Shortly before the siren Halus Kasparitis skated down the rink past the unexperienced Jonassenn, leaving him and Ari Jasvik in a two-on-one with Simoni. Alexandros Neri, who was put into the net for this match, could only stop the shot, unable to hinder Jasvik from scoring the rebound.

Ficiscia did not come back well and never found a way through their opponent's tough defense. Their physical inferiority seemed to hinder the players and make them unable to play their cards right, so that their superior speed and technique went by almost unnoticed. Only flashes of it could be seen, like Devirius's deke past Roskard and a snap at Terry Slavik that the goaltender snatched out of the air. The Ficiscian side showed a strong game nevertheless, however they were grinded down by the Caujan defense too easily, leading to the second goal by Laikija, a goal that Alexandros Neri definitely has to take part of the blame for. He let an easy shot from the boards rebound into open space, where Laikija could shoot it into the open net in front of him. It was a goal that could have been defended by Neri playing the game safer and it clearly showed a problem of young Ficiscians not being used against a physical defensive game like Cauja's. Similar things could be derived from their answer to the hard checks they were facing, which was resorting to a sometimes dirty playing to live up to the toughness of their opponents, resulting in 14 penalty minutes.

Nevertheless, they somewhat caught themselves in the final period and, led by Ducantus, could avoid the dangering loss in the last seconds of the game. The first goal was scored by Andreios Rusus on the powerplay after a shift that was more than a minute without a chance or a clear. The Caujan box stood very tight and blocked both Jonssenn's shooting line and the passing lines for Rusus and Ducantus except for the pass back to the blue line, but Ducantus could find an opening for a saucer pass to Rusus towards the end of the powerplay, used for a beautiful onetimer by the Avangard Oktyabrgrad forward. "It was pretty much a one time thing. Such passes are not fully controllable, and it's rare to get such a nice shot off it, so I am happy it worked out. There was a lot of luck involved.", Rusus analyzed after the match. In the final seconds, when Neri was pulled, pressure intensified and it was a bit of luck that secured Ficiscia the final goal to draw the game as well. A shot of Ianicevis bounced off the goalkeeper into a scrum where Marcus Licius for once won the puck, playing it back blindly onto the stick of Ducantus, who was able to hang it high under the crossbar.

The late draw of course euphorized the players and fans, but everybody knows that this kind of play may not be enough against the world's best and it will be hard to win another medal like this. The next chance to improve comes tomorrow against pointless Devonta.

Ficiscia 2-2 Cauja (0-1, 0-1, 2-0)

SCORERS: 18' Jasvik 0-1 (Kasparitis). 26' Laikija 0-2 (Sacivik, Szaikyre). 47' Rusus 1-2 (Ducantus, Jonssenn/Penalty Sailikax). 60' (59:47) Ducantus 2-2 (Licius).

Who's Doing What?
The dominating Honekisel-Zublovnet-Porosjamik line is tearing up the WJHC while Emmiskard is being an impenetrable wall

New Sarum - Check out some of the latest stories coming out of the WJHC:

The Honekisel-Zublovnet-Porosjamik Danger - Combining for a total of 5 goals and a multitude of assists, both Porosjamik and Honekisel are showing they can score with feeds from any type of centre while Zublovnet is showing his dominance in the face-off circle (having a face-off win % of 68.2) and can also chip in offensively (scoring a goal and knotting up 6 assists). The key to this is Zublovnet's defensive game, something that has become apparent he has been working on for a long time. Acting as a 3rd forward in the neutral zone and when defending in the offensive zone, Zublovnet has been responsible for key takeaways against his opponents by using either his pokecheck or his huge body. All three members of this line are versatile, fast, skilled and always play at a high tempo to try and break past their opponents.

The Zealot - Azwaj Sayatamir is one of the few Arabic Ontorisans who are considered being drafted this year. Sayatamir however, is someone that all teams should look out for. While he has been putting up little to no goals (2 assists in 2 games played), his face-off technique is one of the best on the team (FOW% of 73.4). As well, he's speedy and can stickhandle through the narrowest gaps. Sayatamir recorded 89 points in 66 games played with the RJJL's Calvisburg Zealots last season.

Kea's Supreme Goalie - Tomas Emmiskard is someone to be reckoned with. Stopping all 62 shots against him and leading the tournament in both shutouts, Save Percentage and Goals Against Average (obviously), Emmiskard is showing why he deserves to be going in the Top 10 for the OJL Entry Draft. Standing at 6'6", 226 pounds, Emmiskard is surprisingly mobile and agile for his size, and uses both his large frame and skills to block difficult shots. He's already been joked to be "Ontorisa's great wall" by teammates and rivals alike.

The Brotherly Connection - Brejal Delsja, younger brother to Rieaa Delsja, was a surprising addition to the roster. Despite his small point production in the junior leagues, Delsja has been doing well on Ontorisa's 3rd Line, recording a goal and an assist to help bolster the team's offence. Much like Rieaa, Brejal is a very skilled player, resorting more on his stickwork and hockey IQ to get past defenders rather than just his size. However, Brejal also takes the body, going into the dirty corners to try and recover/maintain possession of the puck. He's someone to definitely keep an eye on during this tournament.

THE KALAGIN FACTOR
Meet the brightest shining Novozemlyan star at the WJHC

SWANMOUTH Barring a complete collapse in the two remaining group B games, we are witnessing the best Novozemlyan WJHC performance since, well, ever. 3 games, 3 wins and an impressive 14-1 goal differential. First line center Valeri Kalagin has been a big part of the success so far - the 18 year old has had a hand in half the goals scored by the Pioneers.

"I'm pleased with my performance," Kalagin said after last night's 4-0 win over Gregoryisgodistan. And with 7 points in three games, who wouldn't be?

For people who don't follow the Novaya Zemlya Junior Hockey League, and surprisingly many are not, the WJHC has given a wider audience a chance to become acquainted with the prospective superstar, described by some as "the next Krasimir Yerokhin". Despite his young age, Kalagin has featured in two World Junior tournaments already. He is the only Novozemlyan player to have been selected for the WJHC team at the age of 16.

"That was the infamous 'Disaster in Videnhagen' team," he said about his first World Junior tournament in Vermark. "I did not play well. It was a great learning experience, but I didn't do much to help the team."

"The second was a bit better, although you always feel you could have done more," he added, refering to last year's tournament in The Sword Bloke. "It was a tough group. We had one bad game against Levivania that we really should've won, and then there was an OT loss against Ficiscia and that was enough to miss the playoffs."

Kalagin has spent all of his hockey career so far in the Belushye Hockey Academy, known for churning out some of the finest hockey players Novaya Zemlya has seen over the years, such as Krasimir Yerokhin and Dmitriy Chupalov. Most high-profile players leave the academy for a professional club at an early age to get a chance to prove themselves in the Elite League, which is why many were surprised to see Kalagin stay for another season after posting a dominant 109 points in the NZJHL in season 25.

"I felt there were still some things I needed to work on," he comments on his decision. "You don't want to go pro too early and end up playing 5 minutes per game on a fourth line somewhere."

That might not be the whole story. In a hockey-crazed city with three Elite League teams collectively known as "the trifecta of hate", club allegiance is a sensitive issue. Born and raised in Belushya Guba, Kalagin knows this all too well.

"My mother comes from a Torpedo family," Kalagin says. "My grandfather was in the navy and was one of the founders of the Torpedo hockey club. My dad's family are die hard Stolitsa fans, my uncle played defense for them back in the day. There were fistfights at my parents wedding. Both sides of my family would hate me if I signed with the other side. And they would both kill me right away if I went to Partizan. I'm only half joking, hockey is serious business around here."

Nevertheless, Kalagin's contract with the Hockey Academy has expired, and spending yet another season in juniors is out of the question. Valeri Kalagin is undoubtedly ready for the pros, but where will he end up?

"I don't know honestly," he responds, declining to comment on reports that he rejected offers from all three Belushya Guba teams. "We'll have to wait and see. Right now, my only focus is the World Juniors. I have a job to do here."

Kaboomlandia in trouble after shutout loss

Alarm bells aren't quite ringing in Kaboomlandia yet, but maybe they should be. The Phoenix are sitting third in their group, out of a playoff spot, with two games to go. The team, while they have scored five goals, have also been shut out twice, most recently to West-East Timor 2-0. The game was close for most of it, but four minutes into the second period:

"Bill Nern head-mans it for Finn Hakansson at the centre line. He backhands it off the boards to himself and he's away with Tim Johansson steaming down the middle. Up against Sheldon Burke, fakes, shoots, scores! A shot that Drayden Thomas never saw coming, and the score is opened for West-East Timor!"

The goal through a screen killed the Phoenix' inconsistent offense, as they had just six shots after that and allowed an empty-net goal. Next up is Frenline Delpha, and they absolutely need to win if they want to stay alive for a playoff spot.
In=character, Kaboomlandia is a World Assembly member and abides by its resolutions. If this nation isn't in the WA, it's for practical reasons.
