NORREHAVN
Signups - Host Bid - Ranks - OOC Discussion - World Cup of Hockey 29

Humans, sapient creatures and other beings ahoy! Welcome to the 30th World Cup of Hockey, hosted by the Norrish Hockey Federation (NHF)! The competition, for the first time since WCoH 25 in Vaugania and Quebec, returns to Rushmore as the 48 nations look to prepare themselves ahead of their battle for glory, victory and achievement. Will it be one of Quebec, Valanora or Gregoryisgodistan trying to clinch the title, or Elejamie looking to defend their WCoH crown? Will it be Norrehavn looking to win in front of home crowd? Or will it be your nation who races against insurmountable odds to clench the trophy before your eyes and nation cheering?

Of course, the best way to increase your team's chances of success is to post a roster and regular roleplays. If you are unsure what these should look like, look at others' in this thread and read the Guide to Sports Roleplaying. If you are unfamiliar with the sport, reading about How Hockey Works should help you write a realistic RP.

Groups

The top two teams from each group will advance to a 16-team playoff. Each group is hosted by a different city, and more information on each can be found in the next post.

NEPHARA NATIONAL ICE HOCKEY TEAM
Style Modifier:
-1
Home Stadium: Whitewater, Treason (12,000 capacity)
Home Kit: Emerald green jerseys, black pants, white trim
Away Kit: Terracotta jerseys and pants, green trim
Nickname: The Gulls
Captain: Sigrid Carrick

Ice hockey's honeymoon in Nephara is drifting to a close - a poor showing at the World Cup the last couple of times around, and league attendances are slowly deflating. While it has made its presence known and established itself as Nephara's second-choice sport, it is second-choice by a frankly staggering margin, and has to fight regularly to avoid being shoved into obscurity by association football. A strong World Cup will reclaim some of that momentum, and Kearney feels like he finally has the tools for the job. Given that the sport was only professionalised ten years ago, this might be a touch optimistic, and the bookmakers are not exactly behind this claim. Still - the Gulls have enough in them to beat the teams they should, set a few noses out of joint and go out respectably in the knockout rounds.

This is the exact same situation as they were in two years ago.

Tactics
The Nepharim don't have many technical players in their ranks, but they are an intimidating physical prospect to face, bonded by an indomitable team spirit that transcends club and state rivalries the moment they pull on the green jersey. They play to their advantage, backing themselves in defence and striking hard and decisively on the counterattack, relying on star centre Esther Devante for a creative spark.

STAFF
Manager - Aristide Kearney - Age 51
Assistant Manager - Jane Hawthorn - Age 46
Aristide Kearney, a rough Southerner who lead state league club Riverside to be the dominant team of the capital before being picked up by Sabrefell United and leading them to victory as well, was the obvious choice for the Gulls. He's been commended for showing none of the Southern favouritism that those in the hockey heartland of the Northwest feared, and with that concern out of the way Nephara is left with a fierce, determined man, a born leader, who will stop at nothing to see Nephara triumph. Hawthorn played under him before injury ended her career at 33 - she has a natural genius intellect, a talent for biting sarcasm, and a personal relationship with the game's more violent side.

GOALKEEPERS
G - 1 - Ronan Steiner (HC Treason) - Age 35
G - 7 - Evangelos Tsatsimas (Gaspe Oilers, QUE) - Age 26
G - 13 - Atalanta Gilchrist (Chatswood) - Age 24

Tsatsimas usually starts, Steiner is second-choice.

DEFENDERS
First Pair

D - 2 - Tanith Starbuck (St. John's Celtic, QUE) - Age 31
D - 3 - Sigrid Carrick (Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QUE, c) - Age 35

Second Pair
D - 8 - Promise Okocha (Chatswood) - Age 27
D - 9 - Sigrid Holden (HC Maximum) - Age 30

Third Pair
D - 14 - Felix Nemeth (HC Maximum) - Age 28
D - 15 - Lothar Chaucer (Sabrefell United) - Age 24

Defensive Enforcer
D - 22 - Tomas Desmond (Northern Vale) - Age 29

FORWARDS
First Line

C - 4 - Esther Devante (Nordstrand Vilde, USI) - Age 28
RW - 11 - Adrienne Carradine (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, QUE) - Age 24
LW - 6 - Cath Scannell (Kingston Knights, QUE) - Age 31

Second Line
C - 10 - Levin Conover (Northern Vale) - Age 25
RW - 5 - Markus Guildenstern (Sabrefell United) - Age 31
LW - 12 - Athena Tsicaderis (HC Treason) - Age 26

Third Line
C - 16 - Reinhard Matheson (Cranequin Rovers) - Age 33
RW - 17 - Rolf Chiswright (HC Treason) - Age 22
LW - 18 - Franziska Hamann (HC Maximum) - Age 29

Fourth Line
C - 19 - Shale Bryson (Chatswood) - Age 27
RW - 20 - Magda Thirlwell (Riverside) - Age 21

Esparmuran is a medium sized, sparsely-populated freezing wasteland. Snow and ice cover the country 24/7, so one of the only outdoor recreational activities one can do in such almost-inhospitable weather is ice-hockey.

The Espar National Ice Hockey Team will participate in it's seventh World Cup of Hockey. In the 29th, hosted by the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, the team swept the group stage for the first time in their history before being defeated in the Round of 16 by Novaya Zemlya, who Esparmuran defeated in the WCoH 27. After reaching the finals in the aforementioned WCoH 27, the Espars have toiled in the quarterfinals and Ro16. After a slight roster change, the squad looks to get back to their winning ways and win their first WCoH trophy!

Population: 1231
Demonym: Espar
Trigram: ESP
Owner: Espar Recreational Community
WCoH Record: 37-4-16
General Manager: Savannah Spurling
Head Coach: Jimi Stack
Esparmuran has no nickname for it's team. They're boring like that.
Also, because of Esparmuran's tiny population, expect only 10 or so Espar fans in the stands. That said, don't kill any of them (you know who you are).

(LW-C-RW)
FORWARDS:
#48 Ole Henriksen, #3 Bailey Royston A, #25 Darian Sidney
#4 Kay Falk, #24 Paul Lauritsen, #26 Kim Jardine
#27 Parris Nathanson, Gregers Østergaard, #40 Troels Carlsen
#21 Asger Kaspersen, #81 Dan Rasmussen, #13 Lennox School
Injury Reserves:
#23 Trev Fairchild, #14 Alf Hummel

(LD-RD)
DEFENCE:
#44 Blaine Blackwood, #50 Peder Oakley A
#45 Haven Clausen, #77 Devereux Bone
#36 Andreas Klausen, #41 Torben Jokumsen
Injury Reserve:
#2 Torsten Thorsen, #12 Åsmund Henningsen

GOALTENDERS:
#22 Rickey White - Starting
#96 Wolf Paige - Back-Up
#46 Aydan Herbert - Injured Reserve

INJURED:
#16 Orrell Beake C
Alf Hummel has returned from the WCoH 26 roster.

Parris Nathanson, Asger Kaspersen, Torsten Thorsen and Åsmund Henningsen will make their WCoH debuts. Henningsen was part of the Espar WJHC 11 roster.

Everyone else, apart from Rickey White, has returned from the previous WCoH. White, Esparmuran's starting goaltender in the WCoH 24, 25 and 26, was suspended from the World Cup of Hockey until the 30th at the end of the 26th edition for refusing to playing against Gregoryisgodistan. He will return as the starting goaltender, as Wolf Paige took over the position for the last three WCoHs.

Head Coach Jimi Stack will return for the fifth time.
Esparmuran will play a fast-paced, high-scoring game. The team trainers have given instructions for always putting offence first. Because of this, expect all five players on the ice to contribute offensively and shoot from every angle, filling up the SOG. Orrell Beake, Bailey Royston and Blaine Blackwood are the main players on the team to look out for. Orrell Beake is getting old, but he's still is one of the best players in the WCoH, with 115 points (77G) in 53 WCoH games. Bailey Royston is a great playmaker and will be able to fight off opponents with his world-class puck-handling. Blackwood is an agile and quick player who will be able to contribute both offensively and defensively.
@ Anglatia
@ Hollmannlandia
@ Devonta
@ Damukuni
vs. Abanhfleft

(these will be used against opponents who also use predominantly red jerseys)

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose My Scorers: Yes, but take note Orrell Beake, Bailey Royston and Blaine Blackwood are the only players considered NHL calibre and they will be scoring the majority of goals.
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to My Players: Yes, maximum of three injuries toward the Espar team. Beake, Royston and Blackwood can't be injured (I mean, they can, but not here. You know what I mean.)
Godmod Injuries to My Players: Keep the severity of an injury to a broken limb at most. No killing.
RP Penalties for My Players: Yes
RP Ejections for My Players: Yes
Godmod Other Events: Go nuts.

Go crazy, but don't kill Lord Almighty Gregory. However, expect reciprocation if you injure/kill my players. Also, if you mention my country in an RP but don't call it by its full name (i.e. "Gregoryisgodistan" without any special formatting in the middle) please TG me to give me a heads up.You don't need to wait for permission and I might not even reply. I often search for my country's name so I can respond to RP's more easily, but if you don't mention it by name, that doesn't work. You can also mention it by name in an OOC note somewhere in the RP instead of TG'ing me, since then it will show up in a search. If for whatever IC reason you decide to strike the "isgod" in the name of the nation, as in Gregoryisgodistan, that will not suffice as notification as it will not show up in the search. In that case, TG me or mention my name without the strike either IC-ly or OOC-ly somewhere in your RP. If the formatting effects the whole name (i.e. Gregoryisgodistan, it will still show up in search, so you don't need to do anything else.

Actor 81248D8J is well-known for playing Doybert on the hit TV show "Costa Lunians Say the Darndest Things"..... Enemy Crusher Porky "Fatso The Third" McFattel comes from a long family of Enemy Crusher goaltenders, most of whom have been executed or murdered for crushing.... Enemy Crusher Krushallah Krushsaintland is the fattest enemy crusher at 830 pounds.

We will wear dark uniforms for home matches. For away matches, if our opponent wears a dark uniform, we will wear white. If our opponent wears white, we will wear our dark uniform.

What's a Pervert Chaser? Sounds inappropriate.
A pervert chaser is someone whose job it is to chase down those accused of sexually-related crimes, like mooning, nudity, indecent exposure, rape, and molestation, and cut off their private organs, then bring them in for trial, sentencing, and either a fine, slave labor, or execution depending on the offense.

What's a Horse Beater?
One form of entertainment in Gregoryisgodistan is where a Horse Beat beats horses with all sorts of torture devices, like whips, maces, pepper spray, and machetes, until the horse dies a horrible painful death. It is like rodeos, only more gruesome. These horses are randomly caught in the countryside by Horse Snatchers, then sold to Horse Recruiters, who bring them to the Horse Beating Show.

I'm from a country with sapient ponies. Should we be afraid?
Our laws prevent sapient beings from being beaten, but also define sapient beings as humans or intelligent extraterrestrials. So alien ponies need not worry. Earth ponies, on the other hand, could theoretically be caught, but as long as they do not roam the countryside with wild, non-sapient ponies, they should be fine, since horse snatchers typically do not look for horses in hotels or hockey rinks.

What's an Enemy Crusher?
Enemy crushers are very heavy Gregoryisgodistani government agents whose job it is to crush and torture criminals to get them to reveal information. They almost always kill the criminal. Enemy Crushers at the World Bowl and World Cup of Hockey, among other tournaments, crushed to death numerous fans, referees, and opponents. They were then rewarded by the Gregoryisgodistani government.

Should I be afraid?
Just don't anger an Enemy Crusher and you'll be fine.

Which players like to fight?
The pervert chasers, prison guards, and slave beaters are very prone to fights due to their violent professions. Additionally, the Enemy Crushers have been known to crush opposing players, referees, or spectators. This often results in their deaths, much like what happened at the World Bowl. Nobody other than Enemy Crushers are capable of killing anyone, though pervert chasers carry their private-cutting knife with them at all times, and in the event a player, coach, fan, or spectator commits a sexual-related crime during a hockey match in Gregoryisgodistan, they will cut off their privates in the middle of the match. It might even happen in road matches. This will be very painful. So basically, don't indecently expose yourselves and you should be fine.

Willinglsey Arena opened for World Cup of Hockey XXV and was the creation of Lord Almighty Gregory, God of the Multiverse. It seats 9,500, with room for an additional 570 fans of the visiting team to be hung from the rafters. No other visiting fans will be allowed in the arena.

Please refer to players by their full name at all times. For instance, our starting goalkeeper should be Enemy Crusher Porky "Fatso The Third" McFattel and our left wing should be Weatherman 92UDH9111. This follows the typical Gregoryisgodistan naming format, which is title and government ID number, except for government VIPs which are title and name. Use both at all times. Do not just say McFattel or 92UDH9111.

The demonym is Gregoryisgodistani. The ice hockey team is nicknamed the Ice Slaves, and you may use this nickname.

RP Injuries to My Players: Yes, any serious injuries (i.e. concussions, career ending injuries, etc.) require TGing me in advance

Ontorisa's hockey ideas are to achieve speed and skill over physicality. Regardless, the Ontorisan players are extremely quick and bright as well, and are not afraid to get physical for each other.

Injuries
None

Forwards

SNP - Sniper - An accurate and offensive player who sacrifices team play in order to push for that goal that the team needs. As well, snipers tend to not be very physical.

PWF - Power Forward - A good mix between a scorer and a hitter. Power Forwards are not afraid to lay out the body but can also put the puck in the back of the net as well.

PLY - Playmaker - Players who want to move the puck effectively and don’t care too much about giving up the body and not being able to make a hit

TWF - Two-Way Forward - A well balanced build for players who want to be responsible defensively. A great hitter and great at taking faceoffs

GRD - Grinder - A tough player who plays with an edge. Incredibly fast and can make life hard on defense with an aggressive forecheck.

ENF - Enforcer - A player who can’t wait to drop the gloves. Takes the body any chance he gets. His job is get in the other team’s face and just be aggressive in general

Defence

OFD - Offensive Defenceman - Tends to be an active element in both the offensive and defensive aspects of hockey, but can be counted on to be out of position due to the love of carrying the puck and being on offence.

DFD - Defensive Defenceman - A shut down guy who can lower the boom on players with his size and strength.

TWD - Two-Way Defenceman - Can play both sides of the puck. Much like the two-way forward, the two-way d-man is pretty solid in all categories with no stand outs and not many serious flaws.

END - Enforcer Defenceman - Loves to lay the body and make players pay for their decisions. Can count on these guys intimidating the other team but not doing much of anything else.

Goalie

HYB - Hybrid - A mix between the traditional butterfly and stand-up, where the goalie focuses more on athleticism, reaction, save selection and positioning to make saves rather than just using their body. Most common style of hockey goal tending today.

BUT - Butterfly - The style where goalies go down on both pads with their toes pointing outwards and the tops of their pads meeting in the middle, thus closing up the five hole. This results in a "wall" of padding without any holes, lowering the chances of low angle shots getting in. These goalies rely on timing and position.

STU - Stand-Up - The style, goaltenders are to stop the puck from a standing position, not going down. The goalies may bend over to stop the puck with their upper body or may kick the puck. Such saves made by kicking are known as kick saves or skate saves. They may also simply use their stick to stop it, known as a stick save.

*Fyodor Ryzhkov is suspended for the opening game, due to defamatory statements about game officials in WCoH 29 quarterfinals. Boyan Sholomitsky will take his place in the line-up for game 1.
Novaya Zemlya is looking to improve on their last WCoH campaign, which saw the team lose to Valanora in the Quarterfinals. Before that, they had won a close fought Ro16 series against Esparmuran, which was not decided until overtime of game 3.

Although their last WCoH was viewed as fairly successful, there is some concern over the poor display at the recent Winter Olympics where Novaya Zemlya lost 3 out of 4 games and missed the playoffs, with largely the same roster as in the WCoH. However, most experts seem to blame unfortunate circumstances rather than the quality of the team. Let's hope they are right.

The Novozemlyan national team currently plays a balanced game, trying to generate offensive pressure without giving up too many chances against. It works sometimes. Coach Bobr is gradually moving away from his earlier, defensive-minded approach towards a game based more on speed and skill. He generally likes to spread his talent around and balance his lines, so look for anyone on the top 3 lines to contribute offensively.

When the Icy Elephants entered their first tournament - the worldwide 26th World Cup of Hockey - they didn't do too well, with two wins, two draws and two losses resulting in a very disappointing third place with six points, despite an impressive 4-4 draw against then-World #1s Havl. Fortunately, they managed to overcome this mishap in their second tournament, co-hosted by Gregoryisgodistan and Ko-oren (with Elejamie being in the Ko-oren half), where they not only won all but one of their games (their sole non-win was a 4-4 draw with Prusy Krolewskie) but also qualified for the Round of 16 with one game to go; San José Guayabal, the other team from Group H to qualify, only managed to do so after a 2-1 win over Kaboomlandia and Havl and Prusy Krolewskie scraping a 6-6 draw in a match where the winner would've gone through. The Icy Elephants swept Arkiasis in their Ro16 series before falling 2-1 to Novaya Zemlya, who would eventually finish fourth. Over in Valanora, it was a different story, two wins and three disappointing draws resulted in a second place finish in Group F. Fortunately, a sweeping shut-out of The Sword Bloke in the Round of 16, followed by a 2-0 series win over Esparmuran, managed to raise spirits; although the Icy Elephants later fell to the hosts and eventual winners, they managed to bounce back with a 2-1 series win over Nova Anglicana to take home the bronze medal. And, finally, there was the last tournament, where Elejamie managed to shock the tournament by winning 12 straight games - all of their Group B games, their Round of 16 games against Nephara, their quarter-final games against Cosumar, their semi-final games against friendly rivals Quebec and game one of their final series against Gregoryisgodistan - before losing 2-1 in game two overtime; indeed, it looked like the Ice Slaves were going to take the trophy home until the last ten minute of the third period, where Lucas Madgwick and Cerin Meloten managed to score, resulting in a 2-1 game three win and Elejamie becoming world champions.

And so, they enter the 30th World Cup of Hockey. With Ed Peak retiring as head of the EIHB (Elejamian Ice Hockey Board) to start his new role as Vice President of the World Cup of Hockey Federation, outgoing Ángeles de la Playa de Rocas coach Raúl Aguilar was announced as a temporary replacement whilst a permanent one is selected. That's not the only change, as the new Elejamie international kit was revealed last month to positive reviews. However, Coventry Puffins center Paul Morton very nearly missed the tournament thanks to a shoulder injury he picked up in a 6-3 win over the Edgebaston Shamrocks and, just to be on the safe side, will miss the opener. Either way, will Elejamie be able to make it two tournies in a row? Or will they end up passing the torch to a different team? And will they be able to break the "even numbered tournament" curse or will it continue to linger? Only time will tell...

Apologies that the shorts don't look as good as the socks and jerseys but that was because the site I was using didn't have a 3D shorts (or, rather, pant shells) designer when I made this. Also, imagine that there's an Elejamian flag on each side of the helmets, since I forgot where I made them.

Declan Madgwick Memorial Stadium, Davenport, WYKN
Image

Home to the Davenport Dockers - the most successful team in the ENIHL (Elejamian National Ice Hockey League) - and the national team. Built in 1992 to replace Dockside Stadium, which was eventually demolished in 1995, Davenport Stadium is the largest ice hockey stadium in Elejamie, with a capacity of 18,500. The stadium was originally known as the Davenport Stadium but it also spent a brief spell in the early 2000s as the Rapid Beer Co. Stadium. Eventually, it was renamed the Declan Madgwick Memorial Stadium just in time for the start of the 2015/16 season, in honour of famed politician and diplomat Declan Madgwick (1927-2015).

HomeFiller Arena, Coventry, AVEN
Image

Built in 1989, the HomeFiller Arena is also known as the Coventry Arena, especially in situations where HomeFiller isn't sponsoring the event in question. With a total capacity of 17,000, it is also home to the Coventry Puffins; the backup stadium for the national ice hockey and basketball teams; home to the junior and U-18 ice hockey teams; and home to the Coventry Nets basketball team. It entered a sponsorship deal with furniture store HomeFiller in 2013. The deal is expected to last until 2017.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose My Scorers: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to My Players: Yes (but nothing too serious; the longest they can be out is one match. Killing is definitely out)
Godmod Injuries to My Players: Yes (same as above)
RP Penalties for My Players: Yes
RP Ejections for My Players: Yes (the longest they can be suspended for is one match)
Godmod Other Events: Depends on what it is. Fighting I'm OK with but it might be a good idea to TG anything else.

  • "Keh-reen Mah-loh-tahn"; "Payl Eh-tah-nahr"; "Ah-lah-YEHM Mahn ees-hoh-kee teem".
  • In the event that any of my players interest you and you want to sign them, please tell me which one you want, which club wants them and all the details. However, Anatoly Kasputin signed a two-year extension with the Coventry Puffins, Aaron Andrews has recently moved from Ðuß Patrós Heiðeer Yßhokkï Unðaß in Praciba to the Edgebaston Shamrocks, Pedro Cervantes has joined the Ángeles de la Playa de Rocas' senior team and Bill Judge has also moved to the Edgebaston Shamrocks' senior team. So those four players cannot be bought. Also, Neil Cuevas is preparing a move to the Elejamie City Ice Elephants (which will be completed at the end of the season) so, if you want him, try and get him relatively fast.
  • Please get back to me with RP info by 10pm BST. Otherwise, I'll go ahead and put my own stuff in.
  • Francisco Solano is the team's main enforcer. So if my team is up against yours and you want to put in a fight, see if you can fit him in somewhere. If he's unavailable because of a line change or him not playing a match, then Lupe, George Lincoln, Carlos Sierra, Paul Morton, Ethan Swinburne, Pael Atener, Mike Keller and Bill Judge (who was Elejamie's main enforcer during WJHC8) can be used instead.
  • Elejamie will play in their alt kit on MD1, MD5 and, should they make it that far, game one of the semi-finals
  • All of the ages given in the roster were taken from the start of the tournament, although Patrick Schmitz will be 40 on MD2 and Pedro Cervantes will be 22 on MD5.
  • It's "Rubio Orosco". Not just "Rubio" and not just "Orosco". See below for why.
  • Again, Pedro Cervantes is Antonio's nephew. Not his brother or his son. Using the traditional Spanish naming custom (father's surname followed by mother's) it's Antonio Cervantes Nakamura and Pedro Moreno Cervantes.
  • Danilo and Felipe Barajas are twin brothers, with Danilo being the oldest by about five minutes. Peter Berg's younger brother George plays in the junior team; however, the two of them aren't related to assistant coach and ice hockey veteran Ron Berg. And second forward line left-winger Lucas Madgwick is the son of head coach and Elejamian hockey legend Michael Madgwick.

30th World Cup of Hockey Rosters Announced
With the upcoming 30th WCoH, Ontorisa has made some key additions and replacements to the roster

Calvisburg - It's that time of year again, the World Cup of Hockey is just around the corner, and Ontorisa is gearing up for another exciting run, hopefully to go deeper into the playoffs than ever before.

The team has made some key changes to its roster however, with General Manager Autrisk Dalamorri opting to take OJL right wingers, Frik Makasburg and Yoros Zapricisk over Umar Tryskai and Jeriak Osmilia. As well, Dalamorri announced that Paukris Ceb-an-Mukai would sit out the tournament to prepare for the World Junior Hockey Championships, with Tetorosburg Titans' defenceman Qas Vemisfort drawing in for Ceb-an-Mukai, as well as seeing Pokam Isare come in for Lamas Twaug (who was unable to participate due to an MCL strain he suffered during the OJL playoffs).

"I'm really excited to be representing my country on the international stage." Frik Makasburg had described his excitement during an interview. "This has been something I've been looking forward to ever since I started playing hockey when I was 4. Huge opportunity for me."

Makasburg, who was drafted in the 4th Round (109th Overall) of the 2008 OJL Entry Draft by the Port Oklisy Wolverines, recorded 77 points (33 goals, 44 assists) in 82 games on the Wolverine's 1st Line. He stands at 6'0", 192 pounds and shoots right.

Yoros Zapricisk was also very excited for his debut, saying "it was certainly and absolutely something to look forward to". Zapricisk was undrafted and played with the Prism Academy Sabres for 3 seasons before signing as a college free agent with the Arugo Olympians. Just in the previous season on the Tetorosburg Titans' 4th Line, Zapricisk was instrumental in the Titans' depth scoring, raking up 49 points (26 goals, 23 assists) in 73 games played. Zapricisk did miss 9 games due to a mild concussion he suffered in a game against the Fresait Wildfire.

The Tetorosburg Titans' Qas Vemisfort was instrumental in the Titans' playoff run. Being one of the Titans' top defence men, Vemisfort's game has revolved around using his speed and skill to spread out defenders before making crisp passes. His hockey IQ is off the charts, and when he's in tough situations, his skill is also up there. Although Vemisfort does not put up that many goals, his passes are responsible for his incredible assist record, recording 68 assists during the regular season and breaking the record of most assists by a defence man (the previous record was by Olli Yukeriall, with 67 assists).

Pokam Isare is a solid defence man who played for the OJL's Fort Yeals Trailblazers. Despite a strong season in a Top 4 position in the Trailblazer's defensive core, the Trailblazers failed to qualify for the OJL playoffs (narrowly missing the Wolverines by 3 points). Regardless, Isare's positioning, checking and pokechecking are what separate him from other defencemen (never mind his 6'5", 221 pound frame). Possessing an extremely hard and surprisingly accurate slap shot, Isare is projected to be a driving defenceman for the Ontorisans this year.

One last addition was to the goaltending core. With the addition of 24 year old Heja Burskha from the Dejekus Oracles, replacing Tolkos Semkaris (who is currently playing with the KHL's SKA St. Petersburg), the tandem is looking stronger by the minute. Burskha, who was a 6th Round (176th Overall) pick by the Oracles in the 2009 OJL Entry Draft, has just come off of his fourth season with the Oracles, his first as their starter, posting a 2.41 GAA and a .920 SV%. Although he will draw in as Team Ontorisa's back-up, it's nice to know that Ontorisa can call on two starter-quality goalies in case of emergency.

RP Notes
There is one professional hockey league in Neu Engollon, the NEHL. There is also a strong collegiate tradition in the sport, and the NEHL pull their players from the top schools. The Ibex are all pulled from the NEHL, or Neu Engollians playing in equivalent foreign leagues. In the last WC, the 29th edition, the Ibex managed to fight their way into the Round of 16. In the WC previous to that, the 28th, they made it all the way to the quarterfinals, before finally bowing out to the hosts, Valanora. For many across the Confederacy, Head Coach Liu Qiang An and Assistant Coach Siegler, who were recruited from the Avatarrian and Aquitaynian programs, were redeemed from earlier failures. The Ministry of Athletics, based on the 28th World Cup, has given the two foreign coaches a renewed 2 year contract, with the hopes that they can possibly even squeeze the Ibex into the semifinals this time around, but at least help the national team repeat the performance of the last two Cups.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL MEN'S ICE HOCKEY TEAM

This will be Abanhfleft's sixth time participating in the World Cup of Hockey. The team matched the performance that they put up in WCoH 28, qualifying for the round of 16 and getting knocked out in the same stage once again. They were able to go a little further in WCoH 29, forcing a game 3 against Cosumar in the round of 16 and ultimately failing to come out on top. Will this be Abanhfleft's year, the year that they finally get past the round of 16? Or will they be just like Arsenal in the UEFA Champions' League, always getting eliminated in the round of 16?

Team Prview: Kaboomlandia Hockey

It's a big tournament for the Kaboomlandia Phoenix. After qualifying for the playoffs in their third World Cup of Hockey last time (and being swept out of the playoffs by Valanora), they will look to build off that to try to qualify again. Here's the inside scoop on the team.

Offense

The offense exploded in WCoH 29 for twelve goals in five games, after scoring a pitiful three in five during the 28th tournament. All the main cogs from last year are back: the Martin-Philips-Rutherford line stays together, while Zack Murray, Bryson Martin, and Kennedy Linden are back for another go, with Murray centring the second line. When this team needs a clutch goal, they'll likely lean on the Martin siblings; if you recall, Bryson Martin scored two quick goals late against Armeia last year to help send the Phoenix to the playoffs.

Defense

This will be a pivotal tournament for the Phoenix. Though Scott Herndon returns as the number-one defenseman, he's on the decline and can't play 30 minutes a game anymore. The key players here will be the youngsters Patrick Clooney and Derek Strachan, who both have first-pair potential and are only 20; Kaboomlandia's strength is their top four defensemen of Herndon, Clooney, Strachan and Bore. The X-factor is whether the bottom pairing can step it up every night. While Casey Lindsay is a strong player, Tyson Nash and Raymond Leroux are iffy. Expect Mitchell to lean heavily on his top-four.

Goaltending

Luckily for Kaboomlandia, this is a position of strength for them. Dylan Brady is one of the world's better goalies and has great positioning, as well as size, to his advantage. He has played in all three of the Kaboomlandian World Cup of Hockey tournaments. If he gets the goal support he needs, Kaboomlandia can really make some noise.

Backing Brady up again is Lyle Mace, who is a very strong goaltender who is more athletic and mobile than Brady. Daniel Dawson is the third goalie, but he is not expected to play at all unless someone gets hurt.

Special Teams

The Phoenix have a lethal power play, but they lean on it too much. The surprise tactic of putting Scott Herndon in front of the net rather than on the point raised some eyebrows, but it also got the Phoenix some timely goals on the man advantage. Derek Strachan has a cannon of a shot, and he can really let it rip. The penalty kill, meanwhile, was anchored by faceoff wizard Alexander Jackson, but he retired after last season due to repeated injuries. His role will have to be filled by Matthias Günther, while penalty-killing beast Maxime Coderre returns.

Coaching

Blair Mitchell helped lead the Phoenix to the playoffs last season, and he will return for a second try with the team. He has been praised for not being shy to try new things, such as putting Herndon in front of the net or putting out his third line with the game on the line.

Stick around tomorrow for the group draw, in which the Phoenix will find out who they play!

HOCKEY NORDEANA > MEN'S NATIONAL TEAM ROSTER

Hockey in Nordeana is a little bit more than simply the country's most popular sport; for many Nordeanians, hockey is a way of life. With an assist from geography, Nordeana's cold winters provide ample opportunity for Nordeanian hockey players to fine tune their skills. The very best find their onto one of twenty four teams in the Nordeanian Hockey Championship (NHC). NHC followers can be likened to an army in terms of their fervor and loyalty to their sport. From rising children to super-star professionals, hockey's viewership and participation numbers are unrivaled by all other team sports in Nordeana, and the hockey culture of the country strongly reflects this.

The Nordeanian style of play consists of a heavy emphasis on speed and skill. The most important part of every Nordeanian team is how well the team is able to break-out of its defensive zone, transition through the neutral zone, and attack the opposition's net. On the attack, Nordeanian hockey blends together the dump-and-chase strategy along with carrying the puck. Most coaches in Nordeana often preach the necessity of maintaining possession; therefore, you can expect the Nordeanian national team to spend a large portion of the game by passing the puck around with precision and finesse. This focus of skill does not correlate to a weakness in regards to the team's physicality. Rather, force is equal to both mass and acceleration, the latter of which is in abundance among Nordeanian hockey players.

ROSTER

Forwards
LW #22 David Walsh - Age 28 [Hanstad Nordics, Power Forward] - Alt. Captain
C #24 David Bradley - Age 25 - [Vangary Oilers, Finesse] - Captain
RW #09 Mark Rooney - Age 22 [Engholm Steelers, Sniper]

LW #39 Keith Wheating - Age 25 [Saskholm Bears, Power Forward]
C #05 Erik Jurgenson - Age 30 [Navenhagen Metropolitans, Two-Way Forward]
RW #25 James Elmstrom - Age 23 [Stanfurt Warriors, Finesse]

LW #12 Brandon Knight - Age 24 [Reginald Pats, Two-Way Forward]
C #36 Alex Holmquist - Age 25 [Alpenton Whitecaps, Power Forward]
RW #07 Robert Emersson - Age 27 [Engholm Steelers, Power Forward]

LW #15 Evan Johansson - Age 24 [Saskholm Bears, Power Forward]
C #14 Ivan Davenholm - Age 27 [Hanstad Nordics, Sniper]
RW #17 Matthias Nystrom - Age 26 [Navenhagen Metropolitans, Two-way Forward]

Team Nordeana possesses a very talented pool of forwards, all of which are first-line quality hockey players. These players all have very refined stick skills as well as a sense of physicality that is rare coming from a more finesse-oriented team. One out of many standout players is David Bradley of the Vangary Oilers, who led the previous season in scoring and is an all-around talented player who has more-or-less become the face of Nordeana. Also emerging onto the forefront of Nordeanian hockey is right wing Mark Rooney whose stellar rookie has earned him the opportunity to play on the senior men's national team. Another player to watch will be the 25 year-old Alex Holmquist; his immense size paired with his unparalleled speed on the ice makes him an effective asset on special teams as well as playing on multiple lines during certain circumstances.

Defensemen
LD #87 Samuel Chandler - Age 29 [Navenhagen Metrpolitans, Two-way Defenseman] - Alt. Captain
RD #29 Nicklas Holmberg - Age 27 - [Hanstad Nordics, Offensive Defenseman]

LD #41 Jacob Millis - Age 28 [Landport Wolverines, Defensive Defenseman]
RD #55 John Oppenstrom - Age 26 [Baymont Seahawks, Two-way Defenseman]

LD #23 Gustaf Lofven - Age 31 [Vangary Oilers, Defensive Defenseman]
RD #61 Scott Jones - Age 27 [Stanfurt Warriors, Defensive Defenseman]

As a whole, the Nordeanian defensemen are a speedy, athletic bunch. Each individual pairing has remained the same since the previous World Cup, so the chemistry between defensemen is superb. Nordeana's best D-man, Sam Chandler, sets himself apart from others on the basis of his immeasurable amount of hockey sense and on-ice awareness. His partner, Nicklas Holmberg, also possesses a large degree of intelligence but has also proven himself to be a dynamic component to his team's scoring machine. Expect Nordeana's defensemen to contribute on a large scale to both offense and defense throughout the tournament.

Goaltenders
G #35 Gustaf Holmstrom - Age 25 [Hanstad Nordics, Butterfly]
G #30 Martin Frankford - Age 32 [Vangary Oilers, Hybrid]

While both of Nordeana's goaltenders are extremely talented, Gustaf Holmstrom's performance in the latest Nordeanian Hockey Championship finals has earned him the role of starting goalie. Holmstrom's athleticism and flexibility makes scoring drastically difficult for the opposition. He also has a keen ability to make outlet passes and put the forwards in position to capitalize off a fast break. Martin Frankford will be Nordeana's secondary netminder; he is the team's oldest player and will offer Nordeana his wisdom and leadership throughout the World Cup.

About Nordeanian Hockey

Coaching Staff
Head Coach: Lawrence Hanstrom - Age 48 [Navenhagen Metropolitans]

Coach Hanstrom is regarded as the sage of hockey in Nordeana and will coach the Men's National Team in the 30th World Cup of Hockey. His reputation for being highly intelligent and analytical has made him a revered figure throughout Nordeana; his deep understanding of psychology and physiology has enabled him to run one of Nordeana's top professional hockey franchises. With the Nordeanian National Team, he utilizes an attack strategy centered around puck possession and creating as many opportunities as possible. Defensively, he promotes an aggressive style of play and instructs his players to play hard along the boards.

Assistant Coaches: Alexander Felman and Robert Donaldson
General Manager: Dwight Stewart

"WE WERE NOT PREPARED"
Bogdan Bobr speaks out about Olympic fiasco

NORREHAVN Novozemlyan head coach Bogdan Bobr is ready to return for his sixth World Cup of Hockey. His team had a decent run last time around in Quebec, ending with a 2-1 loss in the quarterfinals. However, the team followed up with an extremely disappointing performance at the XI Winter Olympics in Prescott, Electrum. After the initial 1-6 collapse against the Astyrian Unified Team, the Novozemlyans lost two of the three remaining games and failed to advance from the group. Are Bobr and his players ready to bounce back, or will they bring shame upon their nation once again?

We met with Bobr at the airport in Norrehavn to discuss the past, the present and the future of our national hockey team.

Bogdan, Novaya Zemlya is widely considered a top 10 hockey nation in the world, how could you fail so miserably at the Olympics?

Who knows? We were not fully prepared, I'd say. The Elite League season was in full swing so we had less time to prepare compared to a World Cup of Hockey, which is played in the off-season. Other than that, I've got nothing.

Image
Many experts point to the fact that you personally participated in the Olympic ski jumping event, and the massive media circus surrounding it. They seem to think it became a distraction for the hockey team and contributed to the debacle. Thoughts?

A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

But why did you do it? Shouldn't the hockey coach focus on coaching hockey? Some people imply that you made a mockery of the fine sport of ski jumping and defecated all over the Olympic spirit. Do you agree?

Not at all. First and foremost, I most definitely did not defecate anywhere. Secondly, I didn't even finish last! It was a fine ski jumping performance, all things considered. Third, and most importantly, the whole thing was not my idea. And that's all I'm going to comment on the matter.

Whose idea was it, then? Rumours had it that the whole thing was orchestrated by the government, as part of some kind of political campaign which was later abandoned when some bureaucrat realized it was a bad idea. Can you confirm this?

Facing a fair amount of international ridicule, the Foreign Ministry later tried to distance themselves from the whole turn of events, stating that Novaya Zemlya takes sports seriously and does not condone using Olympic events as a stage for PR stunts. How does that make you feel?

It makes me feel sad and vulnerable. Do you want me to tell you about my childhood too? Really, what are you, a psychologist? Next question. Preferably a hockey related one.

Ok. Looking at the last two tournaments, WCoH 29 and the Olympics, your team has been on the losing end of some high-scoring games. You gave up 7 against Cosumar, the Vanorians scored 6 on you, and the Astyrian Unified Team, which nobody has ever heard of, beat you 6-1. Is it time to find a new goaltender or do you still have faith in Iosif Bezukladnikov?

Bezu is elite. He has several years left in him, no doubt. Those scores you mention have little to do with goaltending. It's a team effort, we have had some bad games as a team. I will add that after WCoH 28 we tried to change our game a bit. We try to play more of an up-tempo, high pressure style these days. Novozemlyan hockey is all about skating and skill, and the national team should reflect that. We have the personnel to play such a style. However, sometimes that leads to us giving up more chances than we did before.

Fyodor Ryzhkov will be suspended for the first game, because of his comments about the referees in your QF series vs Valanora at the last WCoH. What's your thoughts on that?

It's unfortunate. Fyodor needs to learn to keep his mouth shut.

This is not the first time Ryzhkov has been in trouble. We all remember those stories from WCoH 27 involving a segway and Ko-orenite law enforcement. And yet he keeps getting new chances?

He is a good player. And it's not like we have an endless supply of WCoH caliber defensemen to choose from.

But many people feel that you, by selecting him for the national team every year, approve of his behaviour and that it reflects poorly on Novozemlyan hockey?

By "many people", do you mean yourself? My job is to put the best possible team on the ice. That's all there is to it.

You recently called out the World Cup of Hockey Federation, regarding their decision to hold the WCoH and the World Juniors at basically the same time. Reportedly, you called them "a bunch of wine drinking, incoherent dimwits". Novozemlyan Hockey Federation president Miron Telitsyn was forced to issue a formal apology. Were you misquoted?

Of course I was misquoted. I would never say something like that. I am, however, critical of the decision. It doesn't help growing the sport. I'm sure they had their reasons for it, but I'm not a fan.

Finally, what's your expectations for this WCoH? How far can you go?

As always we are here to win. We may not be favorites, but if everything falls into place we have a shot. I'd say there's around 10 teams that can realistically challenge for the title, and we are one of them.

General Information

Overview:

The 29th World Cup of Hockey was the Allamunnic national hockey team's first competition back after their funding was entirely cut following a series of rather unfortunate incidents following a previous cycle. Allamunnic Sporting Commissioner Hadley Thornburger decided to try rebuilding the hockey program on a similar blueprint as what was used to build a championship-caliber program in gridiron: find a hungry coach, and hungry players with a lot to prove, with a few veterans to season the group.

The results were... not ideal, but reason to optimism. In their first competition back, the Ironheads came away with fewer losses than wins and ties (1-2-2). Not anyone's idea of a successful run, but definitely reason for hope that this squad might be able to build something for the future and restore some respect to a beleaguered program.

A few patterns emerged. This was a team that was perfectly capable of scoring at the drop of the hat, and was able to capitalize on penalties, playing with a good level of discipline, welded together by a coach who could instill unity and confidence in a team that did not have much reason to have much of either. With a little bit of luck, perhaps this time around the 33rd-ranked team in the world will be able to make a little more noise.
