Hamilton International IV

The Electrum Lawn Tennis Association once again welcomes tennis players of the world to the fourth yearly edition of the Association of Tennis Professionals. The first successful tournament, in which Electrum was called on by the ATP to act as a fill in host for Nyucia, and two successful intervening tournaments later, it has moved from sandwiching the two halves of the Astyrian swing to being at the very end of the clay court swing, held after the AstyrianSlam. This tournament's was formerly named the Electrum International, but changed its name to highlight Hamilton, the hot and dusty city.

The event will be scheduled in the clay courts of the Hamilton Tennis Club, approximately two hours north of Centralis by plane. Hamilton's courts are known for their long rallies, owing to the clay court, and hot temperatures, making it very taxing on players. Temperatures are regularly in the high twenties-high thirties Celsius, and sometimes dipping to above 40. This tournament is a Tier 1 Event.

RP
The RP ranks will be graded from 1-5, then multiplied by an unknown factor and directly added on to your players points both in singles and doubles. The cutoff will be 8pm Melbourne time unless otherwise advised. If you need to know when Melbourne's time is, click here.

VIETUSSIA ENTERS NSTT TOUR

The Vietussian Inquisitor

Qualifying for the fourth Hamilton International tournament, part of the NSTT tour, begins in two days with one twist: Vietussia will be participating!

You heard it right! Vietussia's 8 finest men will enter the Hamilton International with the hopes of making a deep title run and putting Vietussia on the map for the NSTT tour! When asked about the oppourtunity, Matthew Arp said this,

"It's always fun to get to go out and get some experience out of Vietussia. It's exciting to get to play on the NSTT, the premier NationStates tennis tour, as my starting platform. Group H looks like a lot of fun, with plenty of newcomers and a chance to get in the top 2 and advance."

Other notable participants include Jordan Higgins in Group B and Aden Bea in Group P. Qualification for the tournament will run from April 9th to the 11th, with the top 2 in each group making it to the first round for the singles tournament.

Even while coaching another team for Vietussia, Xavier Nogueras has somehow consistently found a way to coach multiple teams and has done it again. He will coach one of Vietussia's college basketball teams AND coach the 8 players heading to Hamilton for the tournament. When asked about how he can juggle so much work in so little time, Coach Nogueras said this about his ability:

"You know, I would say I had a time machine, but then again, some loon would start ransacking my home for it. I try to use online video chats and more to talk with players in two different international competitions, such as NSCAA and NSTT. With all the advancement in Vietussian technology, talking with multiple teams has become easier than ever. I can coach a live practice via Swipe everyday of the week if I wanted to, which I don't so my players don't get fatigued."

Qualification will start soon for Vietussian, and eyes will wander to Hamilton while the NSCAA season gets set up.

As the Astyrian Slam wrapped up for everyone else it would soon be time for the Hamilton International, and continuing along with their tennis journey. Making up of the same small group of nobody Ferrets on their trip to go see if they could keep trying to get some exposure in the outside world. And so far it was going fairly decent for the players too, a long uphill adventure, but sometimes they had their incredible luck backing them up at times. With any of them at random it seemed being able to prove just how far they could go in any given part of an event, there was always a lot more to see and to learn. Since this event required smaller team sizes they could have easily split back into the two groups that they had testing out the Sports Interest in tennis before they decided to test out merging. But the team had taken to being together, and there was ways to split down who played in what, which also lowered the stress on each individual playing member. All they had to do for now was go to a new place and do what they have always done, explore.

Though for the qualification draws the team continued to do very well, with only three of the members having to go through them instead of all eight of the Single side players. However all four of the Doubles side members had to go through the qualifiers, which was more along the lines of too be expected for them. There was always the upside that it gave them the practice they needed to help build up desperately needed skill and experience. For the ones that were in on the first round of the official event, they got the bonus of at least saying they were in the official event. The team had also got the chance to finally look over what the officials had ranked them in comparison to everyone else, which like most things continued to come as a surprise to them, but just like every surprise, their was a reason to add party to the end of it to celebrate.
Currently traveling across the United States. Still up for any conversations though.

Electrum Lawn Tennis Association News

Hamilton International qualies to start!

The fourth yearly edition of Hamilton sees the event shifted from being in-between the Astyrian Series to a more legible and clear position, being the very last event of the clay court swing, after the Astyrian Slam. As part of these tournaments, qualification will take place with the traditional round-robin stage, however unlike most other tournaments in the NSTT, more players don't qualify for the main draw, instead a majority of their players will start in the qualification round. This inflated qualification process ensures that those that are lower ranked or not ranked at all will have the opportunity to face at least one person who has been on the tour before, and allow fairness in that two players or pairs may qualify out of each group, instead of just the winner, meaning that being drawn into a 'bad group' still means a greater chance of qualifying. As a result, the cutoff in the singles was 60, and cutoff for the doubles was 46: higher than most other tournaments.

Qualifications are an exciting time, as players from up-and-coming nations have a chance to proof themselves and fight their way to a main draw slot. Granted, it is a long slog to make it to the auto-qualification spots, but we are sure that some of them will stick around and rise to the top. United Vietussia seem to have a good coaching team, and they are expected to do well in qualification, as are the players from Pemecutan. Ferret Civillisation are a relatively new nation which are the stand-outs, already most of their team has qualified for the main draw directly. Time will tell if these nations and their players will rise further, but first: qualification. The qualification is a three-day shootout, going against the other three players in the same group. The temperature today is expected to rise to 25 degrees Celsius, which is balmy weather by Hamilton standards -- a reprieve for players as they battle through the slow courts and rallies. Today, the draw will be held for the doubles, and the day after, the singles. On the conclusion of the third day of qualifying, the main draws will be filled out completely for the title competition.

Strong Showing in First Qualifiers

Image

Ethanian Tennis Players have managed to achieve strong results in the first day of qualifiers, many winning in straight sets, and will be looking to build on this throughout the rest of the qualifiers.

With Day 1 of the Hamilton Internationals completed, the Ethane Tennis Union will be looking to success in this tournament after some very strong showings by many of their players. After a fairly successful Astyrian Slam for the players - all of whom are fairly new to the NSTT - they will be looking to pick up some decent results in Hamilton, Electrum, to help boost their world ranking, and get themselves recognised as decent tennis players.

Most of the players from Ethane have got off to a good start, in their quest to penetrate deep into the competition, with a multitude of them winning their matches in straight sets, to the surprise of many at home in the Ethane Tennis Union. They will be hoping that these starter results are not anomalies, and that they are able to continue the form that they have shown on the first day of the qualifiers deep into this tournament, in the hope that they can pull off some surprising results when it comes to facing the higher ranked players in this tournament.

However, not all the matches were as good as some, with a few key players for Ethane, such as Samuel Hartnell, losing their matches, damaging their qualification aims in this tournament. They will be extremely disappointed with the results they managed on the first day of qualification, but not all hope for them is lost, as they can still qualify to the main part of the tournament, as the top 2 from the qualification groups proceeds to the main draw - a major difference between this tournament and other tournaments that the Ethanian tennis players have participated in.

With all said and done though, looking at the overview of the tournament itself, which is the last of the year's clay court swing tournaments, the players will be looking to the future, not only in this tournament, which does bring great hope for many of the players from Ethane, but also to future tournaments in the year's tightly packed schedule, with the hope that they can bring more form into the NSTT throughout the year, and hope to eventually rise up the ranks, and be one of the best, in a field of tennis players that seems to be dominated by Ceni near the top.

A Closer Look:

Thomas Hutchon:

Thomas Hutchon will be looking to continue the recent form of success that he managed at the Astyrian Slam coming into this tournament. As the highest ranked national player in the Ethanian Tennis Union, as well as the highest ranked Ethanian player internationally, at 76, a lot of pressure will be on him this tournament to succeed in the difficult games, and prove his worth as the highest ranked Ethanian player.

With a strong showing on the first day, dominating the match to win in straight sets against a stumbling Marc Lindstrom from San José Guayabal, Thomas will be looking for further strong matches in the qualification stages to proceed with a strong mindset, and a good set of form behind him. Having won both sets easily, only losing 3 games over the 9 sets, he will be hoping that this isn't just luck, but is a sign of things to come for him in this tournament. With the match placing him at the top of the qualification table after the first day of qualifiers, and only to win 1 more game to secure qualification, against either Albert Yong from United Vietussia or Fi Richardson from the Confederate Kingdom of West Phoenicia, Thomas Hutchon has a good chance of gaining qualifiation.

Thomas Hutchon (ETN) 6 6
Marc Lindstrom (SJG) 0 3

Alice Curson:
Alice Curson, who was knocked out in day 1 of the round of 64 in the Astyrian Slam, will be looking to improve on her previous track record, having won 3 and lost 5 of the 8 matches she has played so far in her career. Being 8th in the current national rankings in Ethane, and 179th in the international rankings, she was expected to not be the best player coming into this tournament, and potentially struggle against some of the other players, while also not winning by the greatest margins when she did win.

However, with our determination, and her fitness, that has recovered after previous tournaments, Alice Curson has pulled off a decent result to start the qualification period of this tournament, winning her first match in straight sets. After playing Uswald Uneena, from Jestoria, in what is admittedly a much closer game than that of Thomas Hutchon, but still a win by a comfortable margin, she will be full of confidence, after the lack in morale she has had recently due to a string off poor results, she will be hoping to build up her confidence, in order to at least provide a challenge for some of the other competitors in the main draw, even if she struggles to win the games.

Alice Curson (ETN) 6 6
Uswald Uneena (JES) 4 3

Adam Samson:
Adam Samson is once again looking to gain some valuable ranking points on the international stage and the national stage in the hope of catching up and retaking what was previously his place as the best Ethanian tennis player, nationally and internationally. Having had a fairly decent Astyrian slam tournament, but not the best, Adam will be hoping that this tournament can provide him with the results he needs to once again rise in the rankings, and hopefully race back past Hollie Gratton and Thomas Hutchon.

With his strong performance in his first match against Aleksander Nye of Slashska, winning in straight sets by a considerable margin, only really getting a challenge towards the end of the 2nd set, Adam will be looking not only to the rest of his qualification group, where he will have to play Bilaal Bilclough of Eastfield Lodge and Walter Woo of Jestoria, but also to the other groups, where he will be hoping - not that he would admit this, however - that the other players above him in the rankings falter, so that he may have a greater chance of regaining that lead in the rankings in Ethane.
Adam Samson (ETN) 6 7
Aleksander Nye (SSA) 2 5

Samuel Hartnell:
A slightly disappointing day for Samuel, following on from what he considered to be a disappointing Astyrian Slam tournament, leaves him with nothing in the groups so far, and a difficult challenge to get back into contention for qualification for the main draw. Being 5th in the national rankings, and 146th in the international rankings, Samuel was hoping to prove himself as one of Ethane's best in this tournament, by achieving what many doubted he could.

So far, Samuel Hartnell is looking set to prove those who doubt him right, with a tight loss against a stronger Vera di Santos from the Confederate Kingdom of West Phoenicia, taking the game to all 3 sets with a close fight throughout, apart from in the final set. Only winning the second set, 6-2, he lost the final set by the same margin, suggesting he may not have the stamina to compete at such a high level. To remain in contention, he has to hope he can win the rest of his matches, which are both tough matches against Sara Zhuo of Electrum and Yassin Yeerlis of Jestoria, but he believes he has the right mindset to do so. Samuel Hartnell said after his match: ''I know this may seem like a disappointing result from my first match, and to some extent, you could call it so, but to see where I have come from, and looking at my age, I still have a long way to go yet in my career, and there will be plenty of time before I have to call it a day, and finish my career. It may seem like I am in a tough situation now, but I still have plenty of chance to qualify for this tournament, and it is not like this would be the end of my career - there are plenty of other tournaments to come after this, which I can do better in.''
Samuel Hartnell (ETN) 4 6 2
Vera di Santos (KWP) 6 2 6

Hollie Gratton:
As 4th in the national rankings, and 98. in the international rankings (the second highest ranked Ethanian), Hollie Gratton will be looking to achieve some decent results in this tournament to continue to build on her top 100 ranking. With many games behind her - 8 games so far, excluding this tournament, in which she has an even split between wins and losses, she will be looking to continue with her career, in high hopes for what she can do.

With a strong result in her first qualification game, winning in straight sets, it is looking likely that she will qualify for the main draw, having annihilated Jerry Strand from Slashska 6 games to 0 in the first set. However, not all questions about her ability have yet gone away, because of her form in the second set, as even though she did win it, she allowed Jerry Strand, who she didn't let win a single game in the first set, pressure her for the set, only managing to pip the win right at the end, to a 7-6 set in her favour. The question people will be asking her is if she performs well to start, can she still perform well under pressure when someone is right up behind her, and does she have the stamina to pull off a 3 or 5 set match victory. Only time can tell.
Hollie Graton (ETN) 6 7
Jerry Strand (SSA) 0 6

Charlotte Little
Charlotte will be looking to this tournament to build up her national and international ranks, as she is 7th in the national rankings and 299th in the international rankings. She will be looking to qualify for this tournament to hopefully achieve a few wins, and build up her rank, in a quest to improve herself for the future in tennis.

However, with her performance today, she is definitely on the right track towards securing this goal. While it is not all other yet for her qualification, she has started on the road to get her there, with a remarkable win against Mats Gustafsson of San José Guayabal. After winning the first set 6 games to 4, Mats fought back to pull off a worrying 6 games to 1 win against Charlotte in the second set. However, rallying for the win in the third set, Charlotte carried the game, giving Mats a taste of his own medicine to dominate the set by winning also 6 games to 1, to secure the match 2 sets to 1.
Charlotte Little (ETN) 6 1 6
Mats Gustafsson (SJG) 4 6 1

Jasmine Abraw:
Jasmine Abraw has been hit with another disappointing result when it comes to tennis. Being in a poor position in the national rankings but in a much better position based on the international rankings, she was placed into this tournament on international rankings alone, and so far, she has not proven that she deserves to be at this tournament. After being thrashed by Thomas Hutchon in the Astyrian slam Round of 64, losing all 3 sets, 3-6 4-6 0-6, in a tournament that she had been doing fairly well in, she came into this tournament hoping to redeem herself from her shockingly bad results in that match.

However, with the poor result on the first day of qualifications, she has not succeeded in this so far. Winning the first set 6 games to 2 against Freepan Jer from United Vietussia, she looked to go on to win the game, but was unable to maintain the same skill of playing throughout the game. Losing the 2nd set 4 games to 6, it all came down to the final set. Unable to cope with the pressure of the match, Jasmine Abraw was unable to secure a win in the set, losing the set by 2 games to 6, and leaving her in a difficult place in terms of contention for qualification.
Jasmine Abraw (ETN) 6 4 2
Freepan Jer (UNV) 2 6 6

Nico Angelo:
Once again, Nico has struggled to obtain the success he needs at the international level to become internationally esteemed. Struggling recently in all his tennis tournaments, with poor form, he was hoping to get a good victory in this first match to show that he was still a good player, and deserved a place playing internationally.

However, the performance he showed today suggests maybe he is not quite up to it, losing in straight sets, albeit by close margins. Losing the first set 4 games to 6, not a large margin in itself, Nico was looking to claw back a set in the second set to keep him in contention, but it was not to be. Pushing for a victory towards the end of the set, he did put pressure on Linda Santamaría from San José Guayabal, but was unable to pull off a victory, losing to Linda 6 games to 7.
Nico Angelo (ETN) 4 6
Linda Santamaría (SJG) 6 7

Ethan Manners/Susan Ingram
Being one of the three doubles pairs fighting for qualification, a lot of pressure was on these players to perform well in their first match, even with their low national and international ranking. Fighting for a victory throughout, they did manage to pull off a good result, and will be looking to the rest of the tournament to prove themselves, and Ethane, as a strong Tennis Union, with strong players.

Winning the first set, which at points was on a knife edge, 6 games, to Moshe Schnoor/Tate Zimmermann's 6 (from Slashska), the pair were hopeful of what they could achieve in this match and tournament. With renewed pressure in the second set upon them, the ended up falling, but by a much closer game of 5 games to 7. With the pressure heaped on to win in the final set, the onus was on Ethan and Susan to pull off a strong win to put them in good contention for qualification. Ending up going down to the wire, it was not until a bad mistake by Moshe in the 18th game of the final set gave them a victory, giving the Ethanian doubles pair a 10 game to 8 game victory. With Atrap Dert/Aden Bea from United Vietussia and Rayford Wise/Dhaakir Prieto from Eastfield Lodge still to come however, their path to qualification is in no way going to get any easy for them.
Ethan Manners/Susan Ingram (ETN) 6 5 10
Moshe Schnoor/Tate Zimmermann (SSA) 3 7 8

Jordan Bennet/Lucy Hockers
As the highest ranked Ethanian pair in national and international rankings, the pressure was on this pair to perform well, in the bid to keep themselves as high up the rankings charts as possible. With a fairly good performance in the Astyrian slam, they were looking for a good start in the Hamilton International, and that is exactly what they did.

Obliterating the pair from the Confederate Kingdom of West Phoenicia, they managed to win the match in 2 straight sets, both by a margin of 6 games to 2. With this strong victory in the bag, they will be looking to the rest of the qualification group - which includes Mark Aðalsteinn/Pryce Cormac from Ferret Civilization, and Onur Junior/Thommy Tiger from Jestoria, to see what they can pull off against them, as the both achieved a much closer game than the one played by Ethane.
Jordan Bennet/Lucy Hockers (ETN) 6 6
Con Towers/Vera di Santos (KWP) 2 2

Oscar Bowermars/Julie Syncole
As the third of the doubles pairs, and level on ranking with the first doubles pair, they were not expected to be the best going into this tournament, but the tennis union in Ethane was hoping they might be able to achieve 1 or 2 wins in the whole tournament, and possible qualify. From their first match, you could say they have already fulfilled the demands of the tennis union, but with many more matches to come for them hopefully, more is now expected from them.

Winning the game against Marcos Gavidia/Fernando Abadía from San José Guayabal was never going to be easy, but the pair rallied together to pull off a remarkable, but tight performance, to succeed, and obtain a victory, putting them in a good position to qualify, if they continue with their current form. Winning the first set 6 games to 4, they pushed to secure the game in the second set, but were unable to do so, losing the set to the same margin that they had won the first set. Going into the final set, they had pressure put on them from behind, but able to cope with the increased pressure, they accelerated, and cruised to a 10 games to 6 win, to secure a point on the table. However, with games against Phinehas Bauer/Maynerd Aitken of Slashska - who have proved Ethanian players many a problem, and Phoebe Harvey/Berat Latif of Eastfield Lodge, who are a great threat to Ethanian success, the qualification in this group is far from over.
Oscar Bowermars/Julie Syncole (ETN) 6 4 10
Marcos Gavidia/Fernando Abadía (SJG) 4 6 6

Esportivan and Proud.

New event, first day, and everything was going rather well, not a single loss for any of the playing members on either the Singles or Doubles side of the qualifiers. Which meant that mostly the entire team was able to say the walked away with one, qualifier, win. A win was a win however, and as long as their luck held up in the qualifiers, they would continue to be able to brag that they could at least make it to the first round of an official event. Many of them really would like to consider that they were at least getting some skill out of it, or at least some experience, learning on the go always lead to interesting results. But it could have always been different, and for now, it was not so they just kept going along. There was nothing there that would stop them from trying, whether or not they would make it was a story always being told in the making.

Now they looked forward to the next part of the qualifiers, and the one after that. Since their entire Doubles side of the team depended on the outcome of seeing if they would even get into the official event there. It was the one place where they seemed to have the most trouble, something they could hope they could fix, since it was just as important to show improvement there as with anything else. Individual success would only get one so far. And while they were not as good, fancy, or as well known as the other teams they were going up against, they could continue to work together to try and change that.
Currently traveling across the United States. Still up for any conversations though.

The Vietussian Inquisitor

First 2 days of qualifying bring mixed results for Vietussians; 1 undefeated doubles team

Image
Bradley Tang received a win on day 1, but a loss on day 2. Will day 3 prove to propel him into the tournament?

After two days of qualification, Vietussians find themselves either at 0-2 or 1-1 (with one exception) in grueling days of qualification. With this morning being the last of qualification and the tournament beginning the morning after, many Vietussians will have to get a win to advance into the main tournament. When asked about his performance so far, Jordan Higgins said the following:

Image
"Each tournament brings its ups and downs. Day 1 brought the lows. I was still trying to get the jitters out from my first international tournament. Day 2 brought the highs. I had settled in, and was able to bring a good victory. It's also good to be able to well in doubles, and I am proud to say I have clinched qualification for the doubles tournament with Freepan Jer after [Anthony] Junior and [Janissimo] Floreanda lost their match the previous morning."

Group H proved to be easy for doubles qualifying, with 2 of the 3 pairings advancing. Winning 1 match just about guaranteed you qualification as we saw with Jordan Higgins and Freepan Jer.

Here is the remaining results for the others groups.

Singles:
Jordan Higgins: 1-1, T-2 in Group B
Albert Yong: 1-1, T-2 in Group C
Bradley Tang: 1-1, 3rd in Group D (set differential)
Atrap Dert: 1-1, 3rd in Group E (set differential)
Frey Wulf: 1-1, 3rd in Group F (set differential)
Matthew Arp: 0-2, 4th in Group G, needs win AND Paredes loss to qualify
Freepan Jer: 1-1, 4th in Group N, winners of Day Group N matches achieve qualification (all are 1-1)
Aden Bea: 1-1, T-1 in Group P with all 3 participants, needs win to qualify
Doubles:
Bradley Tang/Matthew Arp: 0-2, 4th in Group B, ELIMINATED
Albert Yong/Vladimir Yong: 1-1, 2nd in Group C (set differential)
Atrap Dert/Aden Bea: 0-2, 4th in Group E, ELIMINATED
Jordan Higgins/Freepan Jer: 1-0, T-1 in Group H, QUALIFIED

That does it for this edition of the Vietussian Inquisitor. We hope to be back tomorrow to provide you the results of Day 3 and the Vietussians that qualified for the main tournament. Until then, this is Jeb Ports, signing off.

NSTT - News
Tour transitions into Hamilton

There are several transition periods marking the arrival of the Hamilton International on the NationStates Tennis Tour. Hamilton marks the first tournament of the season in the Rushmori swing, which will run to the Electrum Open in July, and the last clay court tournament of the year in the further transition to hard courts in the season. The tournament itself is one of the most gruelling tournaments on the calendar, with its hot environment and clay courts meaning for long rallies and the inevitable cramps faced by players, causing a large upset rate in the first two rounds. Several of the world's top players have lost early in this tournament, including Botack Andiam and the Xal sisters, both of whom lost early in the first round last year. However, there is a big purse for this event and it offers up to 1,200 points as a Tier 1 Mandatory tournament, so continuing to attract the world's top players.

Botack Andiam, the tour's top star this season with two titles and one final, all on clay, has risen to a career-high of number one, displacing the former number one, Ardil Navsal, who has not been having a great clay court season so far. Navsal was tipped as a future successor to Elaine Foyner, who retired last year, on the clay court circuit, courtesy of his style, which emphasizes court coverage; many have said Navsal can turn any losing point around into a winner. Many thought Andiam, meanwhile, was biding his time until the fast hard-court and grass court seasons, for many have viewed the Whitehaven-born player as a more serve-and-volley type player, although with a versatile one-handed backhand and excellent return of serve (as well as his excellent serve, of course). It turned out to be the exact opposite of expectations, though, as Andiam succeeded, winning a coveted Grand Slam, while Navsal lost in the first round of the clay-court slam. Both players are in this draw, with Andiam set to face Hollie Gratton of Ethane and Navsal set to face Tariq Salmat of West Phoencia. Gratton did well at the AstySlam, and Andiam should be wary, as Gratton's compatriot, Jasmine Abraw, defeated Ardil Navsal, making way for Andiam's ascent, while Phoencia is most known for its complaints of 'bias' on the tour so far.

Section 1 of the draw is studded with Cenians; besides Andiam, Andy Amada (world no. 10), Ciache Nagya (world no. 9 and Astyrian Slam semifinalist), and Kika Dovan (world number 6, who was had some success at the Electrum Slam, reaching the quarterfinals as a qualifier and then the final) are all in this section, while most of the rest of this section has had to qualify, subjecting them to the hot conditions for three days of play already, which can be a blessing and a curse at the same time. Section two has third seed, 21-year-old Johmer Vales (sometimes known as "mini Andiam" for his similar style of play) at its head and home hope Malcolm Press, as well as TOCAO and Antillia Masters champion Marisa Maradona. In Section 4, Lonus Varalin, who makes excellent plays using his forehand and who has had some excellent successes on clay last year, reaching the final here and in Britonisea (losing to Elaine Foyner in both) as well as making the finals in Beograd and Carigrad this year (losing to Andiam in both) hopes to continue his success on clay, but he will face home hope and former top-20 player Carmichael Brown in the first round. However, Brown has had a slow start to the season, only winning one match so far. Also in this section are the hopes of the Neu Engollian contingent, Paul Quiront, Marla Gerard, and Felice Mareaux. Finally, in the fourth section, Navsal is the only Cenian but could face a date with either Dagmar Lusaidh, the star standout of the clay court season, winning her first two tournaments, or Dewa Putu Adrian Putra in the third round. Overall, this draw depends on who loses early, like most other tournaments of course, but right now, the favorite is likely Botack Andiam of Ceni.

In doubles, the Xal sisters hope to avoid a loss in the first round like they faced last year, but they face a date with the highest-ranked unseeded pair in the draw, Ripaldi and Doerwald of Neu Engollon. The Xals have done alright in this start to the clay season, winning the titles in Beograd and Albergaria, but they dropped crucial matches in Antillia and Carigrad to the Rianors and Darlcheri/Rentos, respectively, both pairings going on to win the titles in the absence of them or the major Electrumite pairing, Gredello/Levinsky. The doubles scene is beginning to look less like a duopoly of the two top pairs and more of dominance by the top four pairs on the circuit. If any of the top four lose early this Hamilton International, the draw will likely be wide open for anyone to come through and take the prize. but equally is likely are a top-4 seeded semifinals; in either case, though, Gredello/Levinsky have a strong shot to take the title.

After another period of going through the qualifiers, and with it all wrapped up, the Ferret team had done rather well. With all the members playing in them getting through to make it to the first round of the event. Which in turn meant that the entire team could say they at least were able to say they played in the first round of the official event. Of course now it came down to see who would last the longest, or if reality would smack them down again. A lot of them on the Singles side would have to go up against ranked players, and more experienced players, that was always a tough thing to have to try and go through. Something that even a lot of practice could or would not help in the end, but as usual, new games to play and sights to see never could keep the threat of reality from keeping them down.

On the Doubles side, the team was also able to get everyone through all the qualifiers, and now it was time to see how well they would fare, or improve. Luckily there the Doubles teams would be going up against other nations teams that also had to go through the qualifiers, hopefully that would even the playing field and increase their chances of making it a little further into the event. But of course there was no point in getting all into what could be, since what could be would soon happen anyways, and all they could do was prepare for it to the best of their ability.

Ethanian Tennis Union
Official Statement

The nation is once again proud of it's players, proud of what Ethane has managed to pull off in the Hamilton International. With all 4 of our Doubles pairs qualifying, and all but 1 of our singles players qualifying, they are in their right mind to be, with the chances of success at this tournament increased because of the amount of our players in the main draw of the tournament. However, while we can be all jubilant about this matter, which I can assure you we are, our attention must turn away just for a moment away from the success Ethane has had at this tournament, and back to the controversies that surrounded one of the players at the previous tennis tournament, the Astyrian Slam.

Gary Forcen was arrested during that tournament on the accusation that he planted a bomb in the tennis stadia of the host nation, in an effort to blow up the stadia while a match was in progress, in order to kill as many people as possible. It is of our responsibility to tell you all that we, as a tennis union to which Gary Forcen belonged to, initially believed Forcen, who protested his innocence during the whole matter, and therefore supported him during all the legal processes involved.

However, with new evidence that came to light during the trial of Gary Forcen, who could not be deported back to Ethane due to restrictions in place, we as a union did decide to change our stance and withdraw our support through funding for Gary Forcen, as evidence had begun to suggest that he did plant the bomb in the stadia. We did realise our mistake of believing Forcen himself, and have since begun a review of how we follow this cases in the future.

Gary Forcen has been expelled from the Ethanian Tennis Union, and will never be accepted to compete in any sporting events in Ethane ever again.

We understand that Gary Forcen is most likely going to be arrested for life in the nation which he committed the crime in, but it has been our decision to completely wipe him from any of our books and remove him from all standings and history, as to not disgrace the prestigious history of Ethanian tennis.

What we do understand so far from the investigations and the trial is that Gary belonged to some religious sect in Ethane, who believe that some creature - in a location somewhere in Ethane that is unknown to anyone out of the sect - is their master, and that it is their role to fulfil his every demand out in the real world once a year. It is understood that for some reason, this supposed 'master' of theirs wanted to blow up the crowd in the tennis arena in the nation Forcen was competing in, but the motives of this are unknown. The religion has long been known for its belief that anyone who does not join them should die, and they are attributed to a few terrorist incidents in Ethane every year, although they are a small movement.

As for Forcen, he was a part of this cult, and has fully confessed so.

If anyone has any more information about this religious cult, or the bomb incident during the Astyrian Slam, then please contact the Ethanian police. If we have any more information throughout the course of this investigation, then we will likely release another statement, and we maintain innocence in amongst all this.
Esportivan and Proud.

The Vietussian Inquisitor

A strong day of qualifying saw many Vietussians moving on

A strong 3rd day saw many Vietussians qualifying for the main tournament with a chance to make a name for themselves.

After a strong day of qualifying, many Vietussians were able to win their win and in matches on Day 3 and propel themselves into the main tournament.

Perhaps the most noteworthy performance came from the Yong brothers in a must win doubles match that went down to the wire. They went into the third set, tied 7-7 in a grueling set. It kept going, tied up at 11 all, until the Yong brothers were able to win the break and win the serve game then move into the main tournament. The match in its entirety was 4 hours, 11 minutes. We will see if the fatigue settles in, or if the Yong brothers can utilize their day of rest tomorrow.

Let's see how the rest of the field fared.

Singles:
Jordan Higgins: 2-1, 2nd in Group B, QUALIFIED
Albert Yong: 2-1, 2nd in Group C, QUALIFIED
Bradley Tang: 2-1, 2nd in Group D (set differential), QUALIFIED
Atrap Dert: 2-1, 3rd in Group E, ELIMINATED(head to head)
Frey Wulf: 2-1, 2nd in Group F, QUALIFIED
Matthew Arp: 1-2, 2nd in Group G, QUALIFIED
Freepan Jer: 1-2, 4th in Group N, ELIMINATED
Aden Bea: 1-2, T-3rd in Group P, ELIMINATED

5 QUALIFIED, 3 ELIMINATED

Doubles:
Bradley Tang/Matthew Arp: 1-2, 3rd in Group B, ELIMINATED
Albert Yong/Vladimir Yong: 2-1, 2nd in Group C, QUALIFIED
Atrap Dert/Aden Bea: 0-3, 4th in Group E, ELIMINATED
Freepan Jer/Jordan Higgins: 2-0, 1st in Group H, QUALIFIED

2 QUALIFIED, 2 ELIMINATED

All singles qualifiers from Vietussia, except Matthew Arp, will play others that fought through qualification. Matthew Arp will face 8 seeded Dewa Putu Adrian Putra. Next, let's see how the doubles will have to compete.

Freepan Jer and Jordan Higgins will have to face 7 seeded Joan Levitt and Deanne Smith, while the Yong brothers will have to face 3 seeded Coosal Darlcheri and Gyrachor Rentos. The doubles will obviously have the much tougher time getting onto the next round while playing seeded pairs, but only time will tell the results.

That'll wrap up this issue of the Vietussian Inquisitor. This is Jeb Ports, signing off.

The Vietussian Inqusitior

Vietussia goes 3-2 in singles day 1, doubles begins tomorrow

A stunning first round of the Hamilton International kicked off with the upset of top seeded Botack Andiam falling to Hollie Graton, 2-6, 6-4, 5-7. Andiam was very stunned after the match, and refused to answer any questions.

Now, onto Vietussian tennis.

In day 1 of the tournament, there was only singles action that found Vietussians in a particularly good spot after round 1, faring 3-2 on the round.

To begin, Vietussia came out guns blazing in an exciting match between Charlotte Little and Bradley Tang. Service was the key in the first set, with Little having 3 double faults and only 73% of first serves in. The first set went to Tang, 6-4. In the second set, serving improved for Little, but it wasn't enough. Bradley Tang hit 5 aces in the second set en route to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Charlotte Little. He will face 9-seeded Ciache Nagya tomorrow.

Next, Frey Wulf stepped up to the plate, and delivered a commanding victory over Kadek Adi Wiranatha. Wiranatha had over 20 unenforced errors that hurt his game badly over time, and Wulf took advantage, winning 6-2, 6-3. He will face 3-seeded Johmer Vales tomorrow.

Up next, Jordan Higgins stepped out onto the court in Hamilton, but came up short. Adam Samson proved to be too much for him, as Samson got 7 aces in the game, all of which proved to hurt Higgins as Samson won 6-4, 6-4.

Up next, Albert Yong delivered a nail-biting performance against Violet Prieto. After 2 sets, Yong won the first 6-4, while Prieto won the second 6-3. The final set got going, and it was 7-7. We would have to play extra games. Prieto lost the game on the break, giving up a double fault and 2 missed inbound serves, which Yong quickly capitalized to win the match 6-4, 3-6, 9-7. He will face 16-seeded Thierry Garzala, the lowest seeded player left in the tournament.

Finally, we move to Matthew Arp, who played 8-seeded Dewa Putu Adrian Putra and lost in a blowout, 6-3, 2-6, 2-6. Arp was never really in the game, and just didn't give what he needed to to win the game.

That covers it for today. Doubles will begin tomorrow, and singles will continue. This is it for today's edition of the Vietussian Inquisitor. I'm Jeb Ports, signing off.

OOC EDIT: I have created a bracket that can be viewed here.

NSTT - News
Upset bug bites again

The hot conditions at the Hamilton Open have struck again - and again with a top seed as their victim. Top seed and new #1 Botack Andiam fell victim to cramps and the hot weather in his three set loss to Hollie Graton of Ethane, losing in the first round of this event for the second time in a row. Meanwhile, tenth seed Andy Amada and fifteenth seed Alma Semmes lost to Nico Angelo, also of Ethane, and Ceallachan Amhlaoibh respectively. Meanwhile, West Phoencian qualifier Tariq Salmat took a set off former world #1 Ardil Navsal before finally falling in three sets.

The weather was predicted to be pretty balmy for Hamilton but it was still hot for Andiam, who appeared nervous and sweaty from the gate, not getting a lot of balls like he usually does and having his previously impenetrable serve broken two times by the Ethanian qualifier. He then rebounded in the second set, with his serve working almost to perfection to deny Graton any break points, but it faltered in the third set as Andiam called in the medical trainer for treatment for back cramps in the break between the second and third games of the set. After that, he looked a bit haggard in his play and hit a number of double faults. Graton capitalized on his errors and took the set and the match, disappointing Andiam in this event yet again.

Andy Amada, a flashy server with a good game, started out on the right foot against Nico Angelo of Ethane, who appeared to struggle with the hot conditions as his opponent rocketed away with the first set 6-1. But then it was Amada's turn to wilt in the hot weather, and Angelo's turn to capitalize, with the Ethanian exploiting every possible opportunity to take the match from Amada. Then Amada totally broke down in his service games in the third set, double faulting ten times in the third set, including on match point, practically gifting the match to his opponent on a silver platter.

Tariq Salmat of West Phoencia apparently had a bone to pick with Ardil Navsal, for he went out of the starting blocks strong, hitting several winners to break Navsal in the opening game, while Navsal seemed to be another casualty of the hot weather. But he trained in the hot courts of Southpoint, and before long, he was showing his prowess; when Salmat thought he had a winner, Navsal would just bat it back. Navsal ended up clawing his way up to win the first set, but Salmat continued his good play in the second set to force Navsal to make errors. Navsal, though, was the one forcing Salmat to make errors in the third set, and he ran away with it 6-1 as the Phoencian totally wilted in the heat.

In other matches, Sukaina Yunan of Eastfield Lodge capitalized off a Vales error in the first set tiebreak to take that set but Vales rebounded, using copious instances of serve and volley to keep his opponent off balance. Marisa Maradona used her powerful groundstrokes to keep veteran Danjiella Zovic of Neu Engollon off balance; Lonus Varalin enjoyed an easy win against Carmichael Brown of Electrum, the home hope, sliding his way to an easy victory, 6-1, 6-1, hitting quite a few winners against the overmatched Brown.

The first day of the event was always the most anticipated, since it really set the mood for every later game that any of them would hopefully be able to play in. Or if they would just be tourists in an exotic place, getting to see the sights on other individual's budget, either way they got out there. One just results in more recognition, the other, not so much. But in the end for the first part of the event the team was largely lucky, with only Llinos losing quickly to sixth best player Kika of Ceni, which was really no surprise, especially considering that the seven other members on their team had made it through. Doubles would still be the exciting variable to see what would happen, but things looked a little up after the first round for them. It would get tougher, always did, but chances were on their side that at least one of them would be able to make it a little further into the event.

The first round had three of their players going up against ranked opponents, the same would happen for the next part. Birger and Ceallachán were able to go through and win. Alwyn, Säde, and Ástríður would have to go up against ranked players in their next game, and what was more worrying was that those people that they were going up against were of really high rank, which usually meant a lot of experience to back that up. They also were going to get into the Doubles side of the event, which they still hoped they would have a good time easing into those games, given that some of them would have to play twice for that part of the event. Other than that, it was relax, maybe try to explore if the games did not end up killing one of them, so far it was all good.

Shock Result Knocks Out Number 1

Hollie Gratton has pulled off a stunning victory in the first round of the Hamilton International IV by beating the number 1, Botack Andiam in a tense match which saw the game go down to the wire in the final set.

Botack Andiam, who was the highest seeded player in this tournament, and the new number 1 ranked player, fell in a thrilling 3 set match against Hollie Gratton in a match which was characterised by its hot weather and fast play. Faced with balmy weather predicted for the day, both competitors knew that the match was going to be a tough one to win, with both having to rely on their stamina more on their ability to hit good balls.

Noticeable at the start of the first set was Andiam's nervousness. Unable to keep his cool in the hot air, he began in quite a panicky mode, struggling with the game unlike he had done before. Hollie Gratton capitalised on the poor outset from the world number 1 to push for a win in the first game, breaking two of Andiam's serves, whose serves have been known before for being the 'unbreakable'. Pushed on by her desire to win, Hollie Gratton managed to pull off a win in the first set of the highly hyped match, to pull ahead overall and gain a set lead in the match.

However, unable to keep up the same level of play in the second set, Hollie struggled, allowing Andiam to rebound. However, rallying throughout, she did succeed in winning 4 sets to Andiam's six, which was a higher number than Andiam's 2 to Gratton's 6 in the first set. Unable to break Andiam's serve, his serve once again the 'unbreakable', Gratton could not pick up the points needed to win the second set, pulling the match through into a tense third set.

Ploughing into the second set, both players desiring a win and able to sense a win out of this match, both players went full out in the hope of a win to continue in this tournament. However, Andiam faltered in the third set, plagued by a bout of what we understand to be back cramps, for which he called upon his medic in between the second and third games of the set. Unable to play to the same level after that, making numerous mistakes in his play, Gratton was able to pull away, and won the set and the match, taking Andiam out in the first round of this event for the second time.

Gratton said after that match: ''I am extremely proud of what I have pulled off today. It is not every day you get to play the number one, so when you do, you just have to seize in the moment and take it, pushing for your best game. It was always going to be a challenge when it came down to it, and it was, especially in that last set. I think what it came down to was the cramps, and me being able to adapt to the balmy weather better. It just seems that us Ethanians have a knack for knocking out number ones though, first the Astyrian Slam and now here for us. Anyone ranked number 1 better watch out when we're around.''

Nico Angelo, who struggled to qualify for this tournament, securing qualification only at the last minute, also managed to pull off a surprise victory on this day as well, beating Andy Amada, also from Ceni. Losing out in the first set to Amada, who capitalised on Nico Angelo's inability to cope with the hot conditions, Nico Angelo went into the second set with a disastrous 6-1 loss in the previous set behind him, and his chances of winning the match even slimmer still. Having seemed to adapted to the hot weather coming into the second set, Angelo played a much more vigorous and testing game for Amada in the second set, challenging her at every turn. Winning that set to the same margin as he had lost the first set, Angelo went into the third set with his head held high, confident that he could pull off a victory. As Angelo entered the third set, it was apparent to him that his opponent had effectively collapsed in terms of form as he cruised through the set, winning every set and breaking all of Amada's serves in the easiest set for him in the tournament so far.

In other matches, Charlotte Little lost out to Bradley Tang of United Vietussia 6 games to 4 in both sets, Thomas Hutchon destroyed Toan Wu Nguyen of the Confederate Kingdom of West Phoenicia, winning the match 6 games to 2 in the first set and 6 games to 4 in the second set, Adam Samson beat Jordan Higgins of United Vietussia 6 games to 4 in both sets, Alice Curson missed out against Thierry Garzala of Neu Engollon, 6 to 1 in the first set, 5 to 7 in the second set and 7 to 5 in the third set and Jasmine Abraw also just missing out to Maya Cassington of Electrum in a tight match, losing the first set 6 games to 2, to come back in the second set for a 7 to 5 victory, before just losing out in the final set in a 7 games to 5 loss.

Tomorrow, Hollie Gratton will be facing Mia Cassington of Electrum, who won 6 games to 4 in both her sets against Mattias Doerwald of Neu Engollon, Nico Angelo will be facing Hermanni Conall of Ferret Civilisation, who won their match against Ayu Ratih Kemalasari of Pemecutan 6-0 3-6 6-4, Thomas Hutchon will be facing number 7 Marisa Maradona of Ceni, who won their game against Danjiella Zovic of Neu Engollon 6-4 6-1 and Adam Samson will be facing number 4 Lonus Varalin of Ceni in the second tough match for Ethanian players tomorrow, both for the top ranked Ethanian players. Lonus Varalin won their match against Carmichael Brown of Electrum in 2 sets, both marking 6 games to 1 scorelines.
Esportivan and Proud.

Electrum Lawn Tennis Association News

Today and tomorrow's matches

Today's matches (2nd Round Singles, 1st Round Doubles) and tomorrow's matches (3rd Round Singles, 2nd Round Roubles) will be affected by the extreme heat policy, due to the sudden change in forecast with a high pressure system coming from the desert region in the outskirts of Hamilton. As a result, temperatures on the wet-bulb globe index will set to rise above the trigger of 35°C (95°F). This means that matches will be altered: some matches will start early at 10am, to make use of the early cool conditions of both days, and some matches will start as late as 4pm and continue into the night, when the sun is starting to set, and where floodlights will be turned on for all courts. This means that the afternoon sun can be avoided. Additionally, there will be five/ten minute breaks (at chair umpire's discretion) at the end of each set, and at six-games all in the final set with ice towels available on request.

The Electrum Lawn Tennis Association is committed to the welfare of its players, and it is hoped that some of the heat's effect will be mitigated by these additional measures being implemented.
