Procedural Notes

• Despite the association from Valladares not submitting their IUBC entries for this edition, Carloburgo Knights will participate in this edition as the defending IUBC Trophy Champions.

IUBC Trophy

• 27 teams directly enter the group stage - The champions and runners-up or two highest placed teams of each association (24 total), the titleholder of the IUBC Trophy (1 total), and the third placed teams of associations ranked 1 to 2 (2 total).
• The remainder of the spots will be determined by the qualifying rounds. All these teams will start in the playoff round.

Host Voting
One bid was received by the IUBC committee. As such, the Mashu Zensatsu Arena at Mashu, Kita-Hinode will host this edition's IUBC Trophy playoffs, bringing the tournament to the Hinodejin Empire for the first time.

Last edition, three of the four semifinal spots were occupied by teams from the Equestrian States, but neither won the title. This season, the association ensured that the title will be going the Ponies' way by locking out the finals. Only one team can win it all though.

Seaddle Subsonics becomes the first team from the Equestrian States to win the IUBC trophy, compounding the misery of losing two consecutive IUBC Trophy finals to Everfree Indigo.

Guidelines for Entry in IUBC XVI

• Each nation is entitled to three entries, with their champion listed first. Please follow the format for submission in the OP.
• Seaddle Subsonics (EQS) automatically qualify for the group stages of the IUBC Trophy. If they qualify as the league champions / highest placed team of Equestrian States, the group stage spot for the league champions will be vacated.
• As Equestrian States is currently a part of a multiassociational league (REBL), should the team fail to qualify via league standing, the following scenarios may apply:
  
  • If there are three (or more) teams ahead of Seaddle Subsonics in league placing, they will automatically be allotted the fourth spot from Equestrian States, with maximum two spots to be filled by other associations.
  • If Crystal Empire (or other association which is part of the REBL) submits four entries with sporting merit, Equestrian States will get an additional spot.
• Multiassociational leagues are entitled to six entries, with at most four from one nation.

Hosting the Playoffs

• Participating nations are entitled to bid for hosting the playoffs of the IUBC Trophy. Please follow the details in the OP. Further detail is strongly encouraged.
• As the host of the previous edition's playoffs, Kita-Hinode is prohibited from bidding for the playoffs of this edition of the IUBC Trophy.
• Bidding nations are reminded that their submitted bid will not only host the final four but the entire playoffs including the classification games.
• If there are no bids received, the host venue will be defaulted to Ismart Anetta Coliseum, San Marco, Filindostan.

Sponsorship and Administrative Matters

• The IUBC has accepted the bid from Virtumon of Kita-Hinode to be the sponsor of the IUBC Trophy from the sixteenth up to the twentieth edition of the tournament.

Deadline for entries for the sixteenth edition of the IUBC is on Friday, October 26, 2018, 9:55 PM (UTC+8).

We would like to bid Ivan Arena for the group stage and the classification rounds. Ivan Arena has some experience hosting national and local tournaments. For one, the first ever FOB World Cup was hosted here. (Look for it in the region Oatland's events.) Second, the Kjol Orcas play here and is said to be one of the greatest atmospheres among all arenas. Located at 55 Sigurd Highway, Ivan Arena is located in the middle of the economic district of the capital and the beautiful Kieven Park. Kjol Orcas guard Kevin Olssen once said "I want to play here because the fans here inspire me to keep going and never give up.". That's why we want Ivan Arena to host this, to inspire future players to keep going and never give up.


Broadcasting is no problem, as TNC and KBC stations are located near the arena and can broadcast any sports tournaments for it is near. Ivan Arena is famous among the Tjorlish people, from the famous "Game of '07" to the "The Shot at Sigurd Highway", some moments are remembered forever because of the great atmosphere and the Tjorlish people' incredible passion towards sports. So let's go Ivan Arena!

Holy shit, they actually did it. They actually fucking did it. The Seaddle Subsonics won the IUBC Trophy.

So, how did a semi-professional basketball team from a nation with no history of sustained success at the international level manage to win the title of "best team in the multiverse" over some of the multiverse's actual best teams? It's quite simple, actually: they cheated.

After successfully hosting the last International Basketball Championships and sending three of its teams to the semifinals of the IUBC, the leadership of REBL made a push to attract some of the multiverse's top players to the shores of Equestria. To everypony's surprise, they actually succeeded. Players like Rakim Roberts, Allison Dubois, Moe Carter, and more than a couple others were somehow enticed into signing with REBL clubs. Now, while REBL would remain strictly semi-professional, it boasted the talent of a league that pays far more than a just livable part-time wage.

The new signings helped five of the league's six IUBC entrants reach the group stage of the competition, only the Cloudsdale Warriors failing to make the final cut. From there, Seaddle and Everfree were predictably great, powering through to the playoffs without too much difficulty, joined by Crystopolis and Crystal Springs in the knockouts, though the latter came at the expense of the Canterlot Victory, who were one of three Equestrian sides in the previous edition's semifinals. The Crystalline teams bowed out in the second round, putting up a good fight but falling short, while the Subsonics and Indigo were just getting started, smashing their way through every team in sight until only they remained in the IUBC Final. It was an incredible game as the two Equestrian rivals duked it out on the court for the honor of lifting the IUBC Trophy. When the final buzzer sounded, the Subsonics emerged with a 76-74 victory and a title that would've seemed impossible just a few short years ago.

With the IUBC Trophy in tow, the Seaddle Subsonics returned home to the Equestrian States and quickly went to work dominating the league. Seaddle finished with an unbelievable 62-4 record, the best ever in REBL's short history. Two-time IUBC runners-up Everfree Indigo also set a franchise-best record, cruising to an easy second place finish in the regular season. Of course, this might not have been the best thing as they're developing a reputation for finishing second in literally every competition. The Crystopolis Lancers remained the top Crystalline club with a third place finish, new foreign signings Noah Pantin and Jiao Xiaopeng playing a not insignificant role in returning to the playoffs and actually drawing some local attention to the league. Finally, the Cloudsdale Warriors edged out the Canterlot Victory for the fourth and final spot in the postseason, the latter hugely disappointed by their lack of success this season while the former's investment in local talent supplemented by foreign stars Jared Filsen and George Walongo paid off big time.

In the playoffs, the Subsonics were widely expected to sweep past the Warriors to the REBL Championship Series for the fifth-straight season, so when Seaddle took a 2-0 series lead, everyone assumed that it was all over. But it wasn't. Cloudsdale stormed back at home to tie the series 2-2, taking the semifinal to a decisive Game 5 in Seaddle. The Subsonics were confident in their talent, after all, they'd just won the IUBC title and dominated the regular season like no team ever had before. Would a team that lost just four games in the regular season really lose three straight here? Yup! Jared Filsen dunked all over the Subsonics and sent the defending champions crashing out. Meanwhile, in the other semifinal, the Everfree Indigo cruised to a comfortable 3-1 series win over the Crystopolis Lancers. The Indigo had to feel confident going into the Championship Series. They were finally up against a team that wasn't a global heavyweight with a title on the line. Surely this was their time to shine and finally claim a title?

Nope! They got hilariously swept by the Cloudsdale Warriors in three games like a bunch of scrubs, thus perpetuating the "lol Indigo" memes for at least another season.
