IMAA General Discussion Thread
This is the 5th NS Drum Corps competition, and the Final competition of the First IMAA Circuit. After this competition, there'll be a few month break, and then the Second Circuit of the IMAA will begin, assuming there's enough interest.
What is Drum and Bugle Corps?
For those not in the know, Drum and Bugle Corps (often abbreviated Drum Corps) are similar to marching bands, but instead of including woodwinds like common marching bands, they comprise entirely of brass, marching and standing percussion, and flag corps.
These Corps present programs, generally 8-12 minutes long and performed on a football field, playing music always coupled with field movement, formations, and dance, usually with a general theme to the formations created and music played.
How the Scoring Works
- This competition will present each of the Corps and judge them in 8 Captions:
- Music General Effect
- Visual General Effect
- Visual Proficiency
- Visual Analysis
- Color guard
- Brass
- Music Analysis
- Percussion
The captions will be scored via the Marching Arts scorinator (made by Drawkland editing the Synchronized Swimming scorinator) for xkoranate. Each caption will be scored once, for a total of up to 10 points each. General Effect captions are scored to 10, and are doubled to make a score up to 20. All these scores in order combine to a score of up to 100. This is the conclusion of the season when corps are best, so scores will likely be slightly higher than previous competitions (using the World Finals Scorinator rather than the Local Competition one. Comparable to "Finals" Sync. Swimming rather than "Prelims").
Check the I.M.A.A. Official thread for more in-depth scoring info.
Prelims and Finals
Unlike previous competitions, there will be 3 rounds, rather than 2. The ideal number of corps will be 20 or more. In the first round, prelims, any corps under the Top 20 will be eliminated. In semifinals, any corps under the Top 10 will be eliminated. In finals, the corps will simply be ordered, and the corps in first will win, and the others awarded accordingly.
If there's anything I've learned from the past competitions, is that Margaret is a cold-hearted scoundrel when it comes to the score gap between Prelims and Finals. I've seen a corps drop from 1st to 6th, so don't be surprised if something similar happens to you, or if you experience a similar leap up in the rankings.
Signups
Each nation can submit one Corps each (puppets are okay but must be declared), UNLESS you've competed in an earlier competition! Then, you can submit 2 corps for the competition. If this is your first competition, you still can only send one.
You must submit a skill level for your Corps for each caption that will be judged. The average of these must not exceed .50, and in the name of realism, probably shouldn't exceed .95 or go below .05 either.
For RP's sake, a skill of .00 would be akin to a low-level high school or mediocre middle school's skill in both visual and musical skill. 1.00 would be a drum corps which nearly always sweeps the caption award in whatever caption that skill is assigned to. Again, these extremes shouldn't be used. .9 and .1 would be the highest and lowest I'd suggest going.
You must also submit a program title, length, and the number members of each section of your Corps, the total of which cannot exceed 150 (Drum Majors do not count towards this total, as long as they do not play an instrument during the duration of the show).
If you've competed in a competition before, specify which one(s), or "None" if you haven't.
