Welcome to the 29th World Cup of Hockey!

Dear 48 nations, hundreds of players and millions of fans. Welcome to the Multiverse's greatest hockey competition. The competition once again returns to Atlantian Oceania, but from Southwest to Northwest, as 48 nations look to prepare themselves ahead of their battle for glory, victory and achievement. Will Valanora, the ethereal nation winning its 4th WCoH title, come back and tie Plutoni for most WCoH titles? Or will it be your nation who races against insurmountable odds to clench the trophy before your eyes and nation cheering?

Of course, the best way to increase your team's chances of success is to post a roster and regular roleplays. If you are unsure what these should look like, look at others' in this thread and read the Guide to Sports Roleplaying. If you are unfamiliar with the sport, reading about How Hockey Works should help you write a realistic RP.

ROYAL KINGDOM OF QUEBEC

Transportation

To arrive in Quebec you'll likely just want to fly in to the city that you will be playing in. The 8 cities going to be hosting the tournament, with all of them possessing a major airport served by most major airlines, including the giant Quebecois duo of Spiritair and Aeroquebec groups. Landing to Quebec, however, is still going to be a huge challenge: International flights are permitted to land and take off, but expect many delays on both departure and arrival due to mother nature behaving madly.

If you insist on arriving via waterways, poor you. Due to the worst winter in 50 year's time this Winter, all the ports are frozen and won't be used for transportational purposes.

While travelling inside country, there are main methods you can use for this. The railways here isn't as quick as it'd be with other nations (the maximum speed being 225km for the fastest train service), but they are extremely punctual/on-timerelatively punctual compared to other methods (one or two-hour delays are better than what you'd get in other options, with this bad of a weather), popularcramped (best option out of any right now) and frequent (one train per 30 minutes, with more coming due to demand), making it a very cost-effective and attractive option. Even with such situations the services in Quebec National Railways (QNR) are high-quality and well-maintained, so don't worry about your comfort while riding trains.

Quebec does possess a strong auto industry and cars are somewhat prevalent, so you can travel via cars if interested. This, however, is a very risky option for travelers due to icy and snowy road conditions in almost all highways and driving is not recommended. Same thing with buses.

As for aeroplanes, Flying between those cities are not recommended at all, due to weather conditions at all airports but Kingston, making the flights very risky for even the most veteran of pilots.

Lodging

There will be some hotels of high-calibre (at least 4 star ones) available in those cities. However, those 4 cities being medium-sized cities, there will be some issues. The same will not be guaranteed with the visiting fans as there will be mass influx of Quebecois citizens as well, to watch the games. Therefore it is recommended to make reservations 3-4 months ahead of the tournament, in order to guarantee your reservation in the hotels around the city.

If you are still in trouble of finding hotel or motel suites, there will be hotels, motels and other modes of accomodation available at your expense, on towns slightly far away from the venues(50km-100km). For more information please contact Tourism Quebec or for more specific information any tourism agency of the city/cities you'll be off to(OOC: TG The Royal Kingdom of Quebec if you have any questions or so).

Weather

Royal Kingdom of Quebec is located in Temperate and Polar regions, with the cities located in varying degrees of climate zones so all 4 seasons can be experienced each year, but with different extremes. For those visiting anywhere but Kingston for this World Bowl, it's very likely that the snowfall will be extremely frequent. As this tournament is ICly held during January, in middle of worst snowstorm in 50 years, temperatures will be altered to following:

Chicoutimi, Attawapiskat: -15'C to -25'C, with lots of wind and snow
Kingston: -5'C to -10'C. Low snow precipitation but very windy
Montreal, Quebec City, Val d'Or: -15'C to -30'C. Not windy, but lots of ice and snow (70cm/day)
Sherbrooke, Ottawa: -10'C to -25'C. Snow, Snow, Snow.

[b]Languages

There are three official languages in this nation: English, French and Korean. All 3 languages are taught in school curriculum and with great depth, causing most of the population to be at least trilingual. Additionally, in this part of the nation there are some other First Nations languages being recognised as regional languages and are used+learned to great depth in schools, so please note this when you're RPing in Quebec. Most Quebecois you'll meet are extremely polyglot and that will show with way they speak.

When it comes to linguistic status on city that you're RPing on/about, you're more than welcome to TG The Royal Kingdom of Quebec about it.

Money

The national currency of Quebec is Quebecois Dollar, which is fairly expensive. The current exchange rate is $3 NS for 1 Quebecois pound. With the nation being rich with huge economy, almost everyone will have at least has a good deal of money here. So please don't feel surprised if the products are much more expensive here than back home, excluding alcohol.

Things you'll need in your stay, prices in NS Dollars (NS$) and Quebecois Dollars (Q$)

-Hotel: NS$ 35-400, Q$12-135
-Public transport in the cities: NS$2-$5, Q$0.7-1.7
-Bus transport to different cities: NS$5-50, Q$1.7-17
-Train transport to different cities: NS$6-80, Q$2-28
-Ferry between lakes: NS$5-$12, Q$1.7-4
-Flights between cities: NS$65-150, Q$22-50
-Average cost of food: NS$12-45, Q$4-15
-Sports tickets: NS$60-600, Q$20-200
-Bottle of water: NS$9, Q$3 (Sale of bottled water extremely limited, with public fountains providing very low interest for the people)
-Alcohol: NS$3-150, Q$1-50 per keg
-Public phone: NS$1.5 per call, Q$0.5 per call

Cuisine

Quebecois cuisine has evolved through centuries of social and political change. Originating from dominant Korean and elegant French cuisine that came with settlers, as well as materials and existing food of the First Nations living in the area, Quebecois cuisine has evolved through a complex interaction of the natural environment and different cultural trends and is the best mix of it all.

Quebecois cuisine is largely based upon rice, other diverse kinds of grains, vegetables, and meats(in this area moose and caribou, and to rare cases bears). The meals are noted for the number of side dishes (banchan) that accompany steam-cooked short-grain rice. It varies on the personal preferences but often in every meal they eat at least some form of maple syrup, Kimchi and/or bread. Commonly used ingredients include sesame oil, doenjang (fermented bean paste), soy sauce, salt, garlic, ginger, pepper flakes and gochujang (fermented red chili paste). In this part of the nation, fish are caught off the rivers and lakes to be eaten in whatever the way one prefers as well.

Ingredients and dishes vary by region to region, with many. Many regional dishes have become national, and dishes that were once regional have proliferated in different variations across the country.
Meals are regulated by cultural etiquette, which are very hard to follow for even the average Quebecois due to all the processes they take.

TG The Royal Kingdom of Quebec for any questions.

Religion

Quebec is a religiously diverse country, though divided when it comes to dominant regions. In the cities where the World Cup of Hockey will be hosted, First Nations' religions are widely practiced, with Quebecois Catholic Church and Buddhism right behind. Due to these differences, all three levels of Government keeps some separation from any religions, though they still hold some influences in those levels and receive lots of funding. It is also not recommended to argue about politics or religion in Quebec, as political and religious apathy is not known....for most part.

Laws

Culturally and socially, Quebec is in bit of a mix. Another handy chart will be in place to explain some of Quebec's laws in place:

Recreational drugs: Legal, though selling them without licence can lead to up to $10,000 in fines and 5 years in jail.
Hard drugs: Illegal, with punishments up to $50,000 in fines and 15 years in jail for possession and consumption of the drugs
Prostitution: Legal, though people's attitudes about it will be very conservative in this part of the nation
Pornography: Legal, aside from child pornography(applies to any pornographic videos or anything else starring people up to 18 years of age). Possession of child pornography will land you straight in jail for 5 years, while production and distribution of it can lead to potential death sentence. So, don't try it as it's a big no-no.
Legal age for tobacco: Varies (16 in Val d'Or and Rouyn-Noranda, 19 in Churchill and Winnipeg, 18 in rest)
Legal age for alcohol: 16
Maximum BAC to drive: 0.03.
Saying the word 'Coconut': Legal

All the foreign citizens caught under the Federal and/or Provincial law will not be extradited, unless of a special order given by the Emperor, His Imperial Majesty the Jacques IX.

  • Opened: 21st of January, 1936
  • City Summary: Kingston is a major city in the Southwestern corner of the nation, with the population of 3 million. an international centre for business and finance. The city's cosmopolitan and international population reflects its status as one of most important destinations for immigrants to this Oceanian nation. The city itself is a mix of different periods and styles in history, which draws attentions to many visitors and residents. However, the city itself is quite weak on cultural sector, a huge downer for the visitors who comes here after Montreal or Quebec City.
  • Arena Summary:At the corner of Carlton and Church Streets stands one of Quebecois hockey jewels, the Maple Leaf Gardens. For almost 68 years, the Gardens, as it was known, hosted a variety of events and was the home of one of the "Original Six" hockey teams, the Kingston Maple Leafs. Over time, it has served as the home of most memorable Quebecois sporting moments, from the annual OFSAA Provincial Hockey Tournaments to the Kingston Knights dynasty teams.

Boasting history, heritage and antiquity that are missing in other arenas, Maple Leaf Gardens is a Quebecois paradise for hockey fans. From its famed Gondola (to which broadcasts are still held on QBC and TSN broadcasts) to Kingston Sports Hall of Fame, it is rich in hockey and history. While the amenities may not be the world-class and state-of-art, it is compensated by the antiquated feelings that reek even in the most recent of seats which date as recently as 1974. Excellent restaurants around the arena and new features added by the renovation are also bonuses as well.

    • Attawapiskat Mariners (CHL)
    • Attawapiskat Blaze (V-League Men's & Women's divisions)
  • Transportation
    • Urban Rail: Blue, Purple and Orange Lines - "Hellerup"
    • Bus: Lines 8, 14, 20, 56, 88, 112, 431, 534 - "Hellerup"
  • Opened: 12th of September, 1999
  • City Summary: Attawapiskat (/ˌætəˈwɑːpɨskæt/ Cree: ᐋᐦᑕᐙᐱᐢᑲᑐᐎ ᐃᓂᓂᐧᐊᐠ Āhtawāpiskatowi ininiwak, "People of the parting of the rocks"; unpointed: ᐊᑕᐗᐱᐢᑲᑐᐎ ᐃᓂᓂᐧᐊᐠ) is an isolated city located in the northwestern corner of Northwest, Royal Kingdom of Quebec, at the mouth of the Attawapiskat River at Guerin Bay. Attawapiskat has been a mining city for its entire existence, owing its existence to two mineral deposits that were nearby. Royal Āhtawāpiskatowi Deposit, located northwest of the city of 750,000, was the World’s largest Diamond deposit, while Northland-Denver Deposit, which is 50km away to the northeast, was the World’s largest Emerald deposit. Recently however they have been diversifying their economy into telecommunications and trades, bringing the city additional economic boom. As a result, Politics-wise, it has been a progressive and traditional area, which was shown through the dominance of Green Party in last several provincial and federal elections.

That being said, at the centre of its life stands hockey. Hockey, like many northern cities, was integral to most citizens’ lives and was well followed. Attawapiskat had its shares of championships in all of its three integral sports: Basketball, Gridiron Football and most importantly hockey. With the Avalanche having tremendous amount of success as a contender in Western Conference, the popularity of hockey is at all-time high. Because of this, it'd be safe to expect masses coming in and out of hockey games with some tailgating outside the arena as well.
  • Arena Summary: Quebecom Centre (capacity: 18,910), is the very host venue for Attawapiskat. Located 2 blocks away from the railway station, it is located right in the small downtown of this city. Despite some age(being built twenty years ago, in 1997), Quebecom Centre has all and best of amenities that is now a mainstay in modern arenas. It is home to QHL team Attawapiskat Avalanche and has been used for countless of national hockey tournaments in different levels. Sadly, the arena food is not as good as in other cities and people often complain over inconsistent quality of services and infrastructures in the arena.

Through a landscape that is both virgin and scarred from nearly a century of extracting wealth from the ground, this large city of 1.85 million people is memorable and standing out on its own. The local Crees and Inuits are everywhere both in town and at the rink, and the unique, passionate Aboriginal flavour in Val-d'Or, with the city itself being located at the native land and natives being 56% of the population, holds the torch of Abitibi-Temiscamingue province as ICly Minnesota of Quebec. The city's on its rise as a winter sports mecca, as well as native-led tourism industry, of Quebec.
  • Arena Summary: Lankabank Coliseum, built in 1956, is a 23,480-seater arena. It is tiny and devoid of anything recent but 30 press boxes at the very top floor(built in 1994), but filled with things that makes the arena beautiful- Aboriginal culture permeates the building around the edges while the intimacy of the building, the atmosphere and friendliness+unique-cultured natives provide the icing of this cake. Its location and arena food is also mention-worthy, as the Coliseum itself is right in the centre of Val-Blanc and Val-Bleu Rivers' junction and a nature reserve, while being just 5 minutes away from the low-rising downtown. Arena food and beer are done in local style, with them having some of best wines and traditional Korean/First Nation beverages available, cheap and tasty.

The city boasts the likes of world-class medical institutions, business quarters, aeronautics and pharmaceutical industries, and a cluster of additional industries based on intellectual property and creativity, making a truly dynamic Quebecois city.

Montrealers in general enjoy all types of sports, but hockey still is the tops in here. Canadiens and Armada, as well as three CHL franchises, are all well-followed with great media coverage in various levels. The area consistently produces a great share of QHL players, and it looks like that time is not going to be over in any time soon.
  • Arena Summary:
Montreal Forum is a true example of history and technology mixing well. Over the course of its 90-year history, it's been rebuilt twice, renovated 7 times and had hosted 32 Prenneau Cup Finals. Yet it somehow manages to have not only keep their historic features (which is pretty much half the arena, and all the memorabilia you'd see in concourse and Canadiens Hall of Fame), but also boast state of art features. There are several ski hills nearby and various tourist attractions in regional flavour, from wineries all over the province to the 145 kilometre-long Henri VIII Trail. The abundance of educational institutions in the city results in the city having a very large student population in the area, making the city even more unique.
  • Arena Summary: Situated on the picturetesque Almagnac and Charmant Mountain Ranges, ParkSang Pavilion joins the rank of few state-of-art arenas in Royal Kingdom of Quebec. Just opened 4 months prior to the World Cup of Hockey, it quickly replaced existing Sherbrooke Coliseum as the city's arena for professional sports and to lesser extent, concerts.

[*]City Summary: Chicoutimi is the city of 2.5 million people on Saguenay province. One of the nation's most ancient cities, Chicoutimi is proclaimed and well agreed on by many as the "Capital of Quebecois Spiritual Culture". Formed around 6 "ancient houses", it is very famous for being a centre of culture and folk traditions that have maintained aspects of the traditional culture of Korean Quebecois throughout the past 400 years.

A collection of nine encompassing villages and 280 cultural assets scattered around the city, the surrounding area maintains many ancient traditions, making it the biggest living scene of ancient Quebec. People are expected to be particularly careful with their customs, and reasonable grip in Korean and French will do them way more favour than in other parts of the nations. Also, it is important to pay respect and attention towards strong presence the Buddhism and shamanism, for they are extremely important for one to settle into the local area.

Go crazy, but don't kill Lord Almighty Gregory. However, expect reciprocation if you injure/kill my players. Also, if you mention my country in an RP but don't call it by its full name (i.e. "Gregoryisgodistan" without any special formatting in the middle) please TG me to give me a heads up.You don't need to wait for permission and I might not even reply. I often search for my country's name so I can respond to RP's more easily, but if you don't mention it by name, that doesn't work. You can also mention it by name in an OOC note somewhere in the RP instead of TG'ing me, since then it will show up in a search. If for whatever IC reason you decide to strike the "isgod" in the name of the nation, as in Gregoryisgodistan, that will not suffice as notification as it will not show up in the search. In that case, TG me or mention my name without the strike either IC-ly or OOC-ly somewhere in your RP. If the formatting effects the whole name (i.e. Gregoryisgodistan, it will still show up in search, so you don't need to do anything else.

Actor 81248D8J is well-known for playing Doybert on the hit TV show "Costa Lunians Say the Darndest Things"..... Enemy Crusher Porky "Fatso The Third" McFattel comes from a long family of Enemy Crusher goaltenders, most of whom have been executed or murdered for crushing.... Enemy Crusher Krushallah Krushsaintland is the fattest enemy crusher at 830 pounds.

[spoiler=uniforms]Dark:

Image
We will wear dark uniforms for home matches. For away matches, if our opponent wears a dark uniform, we will wear white. If our opponent wears white, we will wear our dark uniform.

What's a Pervert Chaser? Sounds inappropriate.
A pervert chaser is someone whose job it is to chase down those accused of sexually-related crimes, like mooning, nudity, indecent exposure, rape, and molestation, and cut off their private organs, then bring them in for trial, sentencing, and either a fine, slave labor, or execution depending on the offense.

What's a Horse Beater?
One form of entertainment in Gregoryisgodistan is where a Horse Beat beats horses with all sorts of torture devices, like whips, maces, pepper spray, and machetes, until the horse dies a horrible painful death. It is like rodeos, only more gruesome. These horses are randomly caught in the countryside by Horse Snatchers, then sold to Horse Recruiters, who bring them to the Horse Beating Show.

I'm from a country with sapient ponies. Should we be afraid?
Our laws prevent sapient beings from being beaten, but also define sapient beings as humans or intelligent extraterrestrials. So alien ponies need not worry. Earth ponies, on the other hand, could theoretically be caught, but as long as they do not roam the countryside with wild, non-sapient ponies, they should be fine, since horse snatchers typically do not look for horses in hotels or hockey rinks.

What's an Enemy Crusher?
Enemy crushers are very heavy Gregoryisgodistani government agents whose job it is to crush and torture criminals to get them to reveal information. They almost always kill the criminal. Enemy Crushers at the World Bowl and World Cup of Hockey, among other tournaments, crushed to death numerous fans, referees, and opponents. They were then rewarded by the Gregoryisgodistani government.

Should I be afraid?
Just don't anger an Enemy Crusher and you'll be fine.

Which players like to fight?
The pervert chasers, prison guards, and slave beaters are very prone to fights due to their violent professions. Additionally, the Enemy Crushers have been known to crush opposing players, referees, or spectators. This often results in their deaths, much like what happened at the World Bowl. Nobody other than Enemy Crushers are capable of killing anyone, though pervert chasers carry their private-cutting knife with them at all times, and in the event a player, coach, fan, or spectator commits a sexual-related crime during a hockey match in Gregoryisgodistan, they will cut off their privates in the middle of the match. It might even happen in road matches. This will be very painful. So basically, don't indecently expose yourselves and you should be fine.

Willinglsey Arena opened for World Cup of Hockey XXV and was the creation of Lord Almighty Gregory, God of the Multiverse. It seats 9,500, with room for an additional 570 fans of the visiting team to be hung from the rafters. No other visiting fans will be allowed in the arena.

Image

Please refer to players by their full name at all times. For instance, our starting goalkeeper should be Enemy Crusher Porky "Fatso The Third" McFattel and our left wing should be Weatherman 92UDH9111. This follows the typical Gregoryisgodistan naming format, which is title and government ID number, except for government VIPs which are title and name. Use both at all times. Do not just say McFattel or 92UDH9111.

The demonym is Gregoryisgodistani. The ice hockey team is nicknamed the Ice Slaves, and you may use this nickname.
Gregoryisgodistan, population 75,000,000. All citizens are required to worship Lord Almighty Gregory, our head of state, as a deity.

RP Notes
There is one professional hockey league in Neu Engollon, the NEHL. There is also a strong collegiate tradition in the sport. The Ibex are pulled from a mix of both the Collegiate League and NEHL. Many of the stronger players for the Ibex come from Burgunden University or the Ciavno Jackals, the top NEHL team. In the last WC, the 28th edition, the Ibex managed to fight their way into the quarterfinals, before finally bowing out to the hosts, Valanora. For many across the Confederacy, this redeemed Head Coach Liu Qiang An and Assistant Coach Siegler, who were recruited from the Avatarrian and Aquitaynian programs, in the minds of many. The Ministry of Athletics, based on last World Cup, has given the two foreign coaches a renewed 2 year contract, with the hopes that they can possibly even squeeze the Ibex into the semifinals this time around, but at least help the national team repeat the performance of the last Cup.
TG me with questions if you got some, especially about GE&T or PMCs.

Elejamie has come a long way from their first tournament: a lacklustre effort with two wins (6-2 against Pyrranaya and their 1-0 opener against Super Llamaland), two draws (a legendary 4-4 against then-#1 Havl and a disappointing 0-0 against Devonta on the last day) and two losses (an embarrassing 1-5 to Feministvs Sanctvsterra and a heart-breaking 0-2 to Zenic), with Michael Madgwick - himself a legend from back in the day - only barely keeping his job if he can improve in the next tournament. And improve they did, beating nearly all of their opponents (including a 6-5 rematch against Havl which, to date, remains the most watched television moment in Elejamie) and winning the group with only one match to go. In fact, group runners-up San Jose Guayabal only just made it through because of a 2-1 win over Kaboomlandia and because Havl and Prusy Krolewskie (the only team in the group to not lose to the Icy Elephants) drew 6-6. Although they also dominated the Round of 16, they were dumped out of the tournament by Novaya Zemlya, who would later finish fourth. The third tournament didn't live up to expectations, with two low-scoring wins and three disappointing draws in their group meant a second place finish; although they showed some promise in the Round of 16 by sweeping The Sword Bloke (with main goalie Antonio "Toni" Cervantes not letting in a single goal in both games), they shocked the world by winning both of their quarter-final games against last time's runners up Esparmuran. Losing both of their semi-final matches to hosts and eventual winners Valanora may have ruined the party but it was saved with a 2-1 series win over Nova Anglicana to take third place.

And so, for the third time, they return to the ice. Although the line-up hasn't changed much since the last tournament - if it ain't broke, don't fix it - the team are hoping to capitalise on their third place from last time and see if they can turn it into a proper finals appearance. They're also hoping to take into mind all of the problems from the last tournament and see how to overcome them or turn them into a positive. Will they finally get that trophy that's eluded them for so long? Or will it end up being another close call? I guess we'll have to wait and see...

Declan Madgwick Memorial Stadium, Davenport, WYKN
Image

Home to the Davenport Dockers - the most successful team in the ENIHL (Elejamian National Ice Hockey League) - and the national team. Built in 1992 to replace Dockside Stadium, which was eventually demolished in 1995, Davenport Stadium is the largest ice hockey stadium in Elejamie, with a capacity of 18,500. The stadium was originally known as the Davenport Stadium but it also spent a brief spell in the early 2000s as the Rapid Beer Co. Stadium. Eventually, it was renamed the Declan Madgwick Memorial Stadium just in time for the start of the 2015/16 season, in honour of famed politician and diplomat Declan Madgwick (1927-2015).

HomeFiller Arena, Coventry, AVEN
Image

Built in 1989, the HomeFiller Arena is also known as the Coventry Arena, especially in situations where HomeFiller isn't sponsoring the event in question. With a total capacity of 17,000, it is also home to the Coventry Puffins; the backup stadium for the national ice hockey and basketball teams; home to the junior and U-18 ice hockey teams; and home to the Coventry Nets basketball team. It entered a sponsorship deal with furniture store HomeFiller in 2013. The deal is expected to last until 2017.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose My Scorers: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to My Players: Yes (but nothing too serious; the longest they can be out is one match. Killing is definitely out)
Godmod Injuries to My Players: Yes (same as above)
RP Penalties for My Players: Yes
RP Ejections for My Players: Yes (the longest they can be suspended for is one match)
Godmod Other Events: Depends on what it is. Fighting I'm OK with but it might be a good idea to TG anything else.

  • "Keh-reen Mah-loh-tahn"; "Payl Eh-tah-nahr"; "Ah-lah-YEHM Mahn ees-hoh-kee teem".
  • In the event that any of my players interest you and you want to sign them, please tell me which one you want, which club wants them and all the details. However, Anatoly Kasputin signed a two-year extension with the Coventry Puffins, Aaron Andrews has recently moved from Ðuß Patrós Heiðeer Yßhokkï Unðaß in Praciba to the Edgebaston Shamrocks, Pedro Cervantes has joined the Ángeles de la Playa de Rocas' senior team and Bill Judge has also moved to the Edgebaston Shamrocks' senior team. So those four players cannot be bought. Also, Neil Cuevas is preparing a move to the Elejamie City Ice Elephants (which will be completed at the end of the season) so, if you want him, try and get him relatively fast.
  • Please get back to me with RP info by 10pm BST. Otherwise, I'll go ahead and put my own stuff in.
  • Francisco Solano is the team's main enforcer. So if my team is up against yours and you want to put in a fight, see if you can fit him in somewhere. If he's unavailable because of a line change or him not playing a match, then Lupe, George Lincoln, Carlos Sierra, Paul Morton, Ethan Swinburne, Pael Atener, Mike Keller and Bill Judge (who was Elejamie's main enforcer during WJHC8) can be used instead.
  • All of the ages given in the roster were taken from the start of the tournament. However, Anatoly Kasputin will be 32 on MD1, Aaron Andrews will be 32 on MD3, assistant coach Ron Berg will be 56 on the off day and, should Elejamie make it that far, Ethan Swinburne will be 27 on QFD3.
  • It's "Rubio Orosco". Not just "Rubio" and not just "Orosco". See below for why.
  • Again, Pedro Cervantes is Antonio's nephew. Not his brother or his son. Using the traditional Spanish naming custom (father's surname followed by mother's) it's Antonio Cervantes Nakamura and Pedro Moreno Cervantes.
  • Danilo and Felipe Barajas are twin brothers, with Danilo being the oldest by about five minutes. Peter Berg's younger brother George plays in the junior team; however, the two of them aren't related to assistant coach and ice hockey veteran Ron Berg. And second forward line left-winger Lucas Madgwick is the son of head coach and Elejamian hockey legend Michael Madgwick.

Antipha United National ice hockey team

Brief History: Antipha United is selected annually through rigorous intramural competitions across the provinces of Alphatheta, culminating in final matches in Wytropolis before Antipha United begins its season on the international circuits. Notably, almost all of the national team is ultimately recruited out of the Alphathetan military. They come particularly from the army, which includes ice hockey as a required activity during boot camp.

This year, Antipha United made its international debut in the highly competitive Artic NZEL. Although the thrill of competition & pressure from fans forced the government's hand into allowing Antipha United to seek participation in the World Cup of Hockey XXIX, several of the NZEL Season 25 starters will not be participating due to injuries. The team has therefore been supplemented with various players from the Inland League (IL) and Coastal League (CL) not currently engaged in the domestic National Inter-League Conference (NICL).

Novaya Zemlya generally plays a disciplined game, with a focus on controlling the neutral zone and bore the opposing team into submission. Lately, another Novozemlyan characteristic would be the god awful power play.

Head coach Bogdan Bobr has kept most of his core from the successful WCoH 27 campaign in which the team made the semifinals. Unfortunately, that same core had a very mediocre showing in the most recent WCoH in Valanora. They did qualify for the Round of 16, but they did it almost solely on the back of netminder Iosif Bezukladnikov. The Novozemlyan offense struggled badly during the tournament - team did not score more than one goal against any of the ranked opponents and were shut out three times in 8 games.

Shakhter right wing Foma Khabalov is one of few new additions to the team. The 19 year old power forward impressed during the World Juniors and fans hope he is ready to make an impact at the highest level of international hockey. 4th liner and PK specialist Oleksandr Gavrilyuk is the only other player to make his national team debut, unless injuries or bad performances open up a spot for healthy scratch Valentin Zakharov.

Notable omissions include Partizan defensman Andrei Yegorov who had his season ravaged by injuries. In addition, Torpedo winger Aleksandr Gavrilov apparently did not impress Bobr enough to make the opening game roster, but he is included among the reserves. It is speculated that Bobr considers the Gavrilov brothers defensively unreliable and doesn't want both of them on the same line.

Ortol'a Roster for World Cup of Hockey XXIX

Brief Background
Ortol'a is an island city-state located in Atlantia Oceania. It is divided into two sections, the above-are and below-area. Above, the Or'o people live and prosper. The entirety of the roster is Or'o people. Below, the Ort'a people, colloquially referred to as "Orts", live in poverty. Or'o are very large, and the average height of players on this team is around 6 feet, 8 inches tall. Players should be referred to by their second and third names, and fourth if necessary (i.e. H Ren'a). The naming pattern, for those wondering, is race (Or'o), followed by given letter, followed by Oracle-chosen name, followed by family name.

HOCKEY ASSOCIATION OF NORDEANA > MEN'S NATIONAL TEAM

Hockey in Nordeana is a little bit more than simply the country's most popular sport; for many Nordeanians, hockey is a way of life. With an assist from geography, Nordeana's cold winters provide ample opportunity for Nordeanian hockey players to fine tune their skills. The very best find their onto one of twenty four teams in the Nordeanian Hockey Championship (NHC). NHC followers can be likened to an army in terms of their fervor and loyalty to their sport. From rising children to super-star professionals, hockey's viewership and participation numbers are unrivaled by all other team sports in Nordeana, and the hockey culture of the country strongly reflects this.

The Nordeanian style of play consists of a heavy emphasis on speed and skill. The most important part of every Nordeanian team is how well the team is able to break-out of its defensive zone, transition through the neutral zone, and attack the opposition's net. On the attack, Nordeanian hockey blends together the dump-and-chase strategy along with carrying the puck. Most coaches in Nordeana often preach the necessity of maintaining possession; therefore, you can expect the Nordeanian national team to spend a large portion of the game by passing the puck around with precision and finesse. This focus of skill does not correlate to a weakness in regards to the team's physicality. Rather, force is equal to both mass and acceleration, the latter of which is in abundance among Nordeanian hockey players.

Ficiscia plays offensive with fast passing and a heavy accent on skating skills. The Ficiscian play is fast and offensive, like a mix of the Swiss NLA and the old USSR national team. Weaknesses of the Ficiscian hockey are traditionally fighting for the puck in front of the goal. You won't see many of those "NHL rebound goals" from us. In Ficiscia, international standard 30m wide rinks are used. Most of our players are fast and defensemen typically have a strong shot and decent puck handling skills, while not being as physical as players from elsewhere and often a bit shorter and lighter. If you want to pick a fight, we don't have goons or enforcers but Fulvius, Arrius and Larins, plus to some extent Furus, are good candidates if you touch our goaltenders or stars (or them, obvi). Generally we have a culture of collective defense and the 1on1 brawls like in North America rarely happen in Ficiscia, usually you'll have three or four players pushing and shoving but not much boxing if you attack one of us.

The powerplay is played in the Umbrella formation. In PK, our formation depends on the opponent but we generally attack pretty aggressively and try to get the puck and, if possible, launch counter attacks. Teams are:
PP1: Fulvius (blue line) - Marcantor, Thorvaldssenn (snipers) - Praesumptus, Vero (forwards)
PP2: Berjaman (BL) - Aleixos, Neri (SN) - Larins, Vaccarius (FW)

PK1: Neri, Fulvius, Praesumptus, Brica
PK2: Arrius, Minor, Vero, Marcantor (Vero plays center here)

Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to My Players: Yes EDIT: Any serious injuries (i.e. concussions, career ending injuries, etc.) require TGing me in advance
Godmod Injuries to My Players: Yes EDIT: Any serious injuries (i.e. concussions, career ending injuries, etc.) require TGing me in advance

Style: +2.45

Ontorisa's hockey ideas are to achieve speed and skill over physicality. Regardless, the Ontorisan players are extremely quick and bright as well, and are not afraid to get physical for each other.

Forwards

SNP - Sniper - An accurate and offensive player who sacrifices team play in order to push for that goal that the team needs. As well, snipers tend to not be very physical.

PWF - Power Forward - A good mix between a scorer and a hitter. Power Forwards are not afraid to lay out the body but can also put the puck in the back of the net as well.

PLY - Playmaker - Players who want to move the puck effectively and don’t care too much about giving up the body and not being able to make a hit

TWF - Two-Way Forward - A well balanced build for players who want to be responsible defensively. A great hitter and great at taking faceoffs

GRD - Grinder - A tough player who plays with an edge. Incredibly fast and can make life hard on defense with an aggressive forecheck.

ENF - Enforcer - A player who can’t wait to drop the gloves. Takes the body any chance he gets. His job is get in the other team’s face and just be aggressive in general

Defence

OFD - Offensive Defenceman - Tends to be an active element in both the offensive and defensive aspects of hockey, but can be counted on to be out of position due to the love of carrying the puck and being on offence.

DFD - Defensive Defenceman - A shut down guy who can lower the boom on players with his size and strength.

TWD - Two-Way Defenceman - Can play both sides of the puck. Much like the two-way forward, the two-way d-man is pretty solid in all categories with no stand outs and not many serious flaws.

END - Enforcer Defenceman - Loves to lay the body and make players pay for their decisions. Can count on these guys intimidating the other team but not doing much of anything else.

Goalie

HYB - Hybrid - A mix between the traditional butterfly and stand-up, where the goalie focuses more on athleticism, reaction, save selection and positioning to make saves rather than just using their body. Most common style of hockey goal tending today.

BUT - Butterfly - The style where goalies go down on both pads with their toes pointing outwards and the tops of their pads meeting in the middle, thus closing up the five hole. This results in a "wall" of padding without any holes, lowering the chances of low angle shots getting in. These goalies rely on timing and position.

STU - Stand-Up - The style, goaltenders are to stop the puck from a standing position, not going down. The goalies may bend over to stop the puck with their upper body or may kick the puck. Such saves made by kicking are known as kick saves or skate saves. They may also simply use their stick to stop it, known as a stick save.

The TDS Quick 'n' Easy Guide to the 28 29th World Cup of Hockey

Let's cast our minds back to the last tournament. Yes, I know that it wasn't a good tournament and it was a bit of a letdown compared to the one before. But just hear me out. After that dull and dreadful group run, we made it to the Round of 16. And that's where we managed to turn things round, where we managed to beat The Sword Bloke 2-0 in our first game and 1-0 in our second. But that was the tip of the iceberg as, in the quarter finals, we managed to defeat Esparmuran 3-1. The second game in the series was a thing of beauty, with Elejamie winning their second game 5-3, with four of our goals coming in the second period. However, the dream couldn't last forever as we lost both of our semi-final matches to hosts and eventual winners Valanora, although we did turn things round and came third, winning the series 2-1. Meanwhile Quebec, our main rivals that we drew 0-0 to on day one, won our group, beat Abanhfleft in two straight games before losing their series to Nova Anglicana 2-1.

But that was then. And this is now. As the Icy Elephants touch down - a pun that might be intended because of the World Bowl going on at the same time in the same nation - in Quebec for the 29th installment, I figured we might as well take a quick look at the tournament. Or, to be more exact, our group mates. After all, it doesn't hurt to take a look at what we've got. And, to be fair, I think we might be in for a bit of a tough time, maybe slide by with a draw or two, but it won't be anything too difficult. So, without further adieu, let's take a quick look at our opponents in Group B:

First up, let's talk about Ortola, our opening team. They're new to the competition, so obviously there's a good chance we'll win. But I wouldn't be too sure, seeing as newbies have managed to pull off shock results. We drew 4-4 to Havl in WCoH 26. Prusy Krolewskie drew 6-6, also to Havl, in their last group game of WCoH27; both teams were sent out of the tournament and San Jose Guayabal, who beat Kaboomlandia 2-1 on that same day, joined us in the Round of 16. The fact that the Orts are pretty tall, some of them are probably taller than Elejamie's gentle giant Cerin Meloten (who's 6' 7", by the way), might give them a bit of an edge. But we shall see.

Will he lead Elejamie to a victory over the Ontorisans? Will they make it
two in a row? Or will it just be a draw?
Afterwards, we have Ontorisa. We've never really faced them in the competition proper, although we did play them in a pre-WCoH27 friendly that saw them win 2-0; Tealmos Wedernas scoring the first in the second period and Umar Tryskai bagging the second in the third. Although we followed this up with a slightly less disappointing 3-4 loss to Quebec, we managed to buck up and deliver one of the biggest shocks of the tournament, demolishing our group and making it all the way to the quarter-finals. Ontorisa, on the other hand, failed to make it out of Group E, coming in fourth with three wins, a draw and two losses. They fared better in the last tournament, winning Group C with three wins and two draws, followed by a 4-2 victory over Group D runners-up Zenic; however, the Arctic Survivors would eventually have the last laugh as they won the next two games in the series 2-1 and 4-1, before going on to finish the tournament in second place.

Day three should see us up against the Equestrian States. Don't ask us how horses are able to play ice hockey; it's one of those things, much like how Joel and Mike eat and breathe and other science facts. Old TV show references aside, the Equestrians are back after missing the last tournament. Over in the Gregoryisgodistani half of the 27th edition, they came top of their group, narrowly edging out The Sword Bloke - who were surprising everyone - on goal difference. Whereas the Swordeans would later fall in two games, the Equestrians managed to make it to the semi-finals, losing both of their games to the Ice Slaves (who beat the aforementioned Swordeans) but bouncing back with a 3-1 win over Novaya Zemlya in the third place playoff. So will they still be on form when they return to the ice? Probably. But we've put in plenty of practice and I'm sure we can take this one.

Then we play Polaskaan. They weren't with us in Valanora or Gregoryisgodistan/Ko-oren, but they're were in the 26th edition, which was where they made their debut. And they came fifth in Group B; beating the Polar Islandstates 2-1 and the United States of Minton 2-0, drawing 3-3 to Novaya Zemlya and losing 2-6 to HopNation, 0-2 to eventual group winners Ko-oren and 0-6 to Aquitayne. So how do I think they'll get on after a two-contest hiatus? Pretty badly, I'd say. I mean, they might snatch a couple of easy wins against the two newbies, but anything other than that would be a bit of an uphill climb. Or, better yet, walking up a staircase that goes at a 90° angle. Not the best analogy but, basically, what I'm trying to say is that I wouldn't bet on them making it through.

And, to round off the group stage, we come full circle as we face Ethane, another newbie to the tournament. However, they're not new to ice hockey, as they took part in the tenth World Junior Hockey Championships, hosted and won by The Sword Bloke. And, they did a pretty bad job, losing all of their games and scoring only one goal (against Nova Anglicana, who would later win 2-1) and letting in nine. So I don't see how their senior team will fare any better here. Prove me wrong.

So how do I think we'll do? I think we'll be taking the top spot, to be brutally honest. Or at least somewhere near the top. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Ontorisa and the Equestrian States are bad teams; in fact, Ontorisa is five places behind us and, as a result have a good chance of going through. But this is basically a bit like a group of death, where we've got three excellent teams and, in this case, a trio of unlikelies to balance things out. And, unlike the last tournament - where the winners and runners-up of each of the seven groups, followed by the two best third-placed teams - there are only two spots for the next round. I predict that Elejamie will take one of the spots but, out of Ontorisa and the Equestrian States... I'm sorry, coach Cataross, but I'm afraid the other qualification spot will go to the ponies.

So what about the other hockey greats? Current number ones Gregoryisgodistan, who were famously knocked out at the Round of 16 by Neu Engollon in the last tournament, along with Kazirstan (who finished fourth in Group D in the last tourney), Abanhfleft and Semarland, along with rank outsiders Anthor and Red Blackiland. Quebec, our gracious hosts, are in Group A with their co-hosts of the 25th WCoH Vaugania, returning after a lengthy hiatus, as well as the aforementioned giant-killers of Neu Engollon to name a few. Kaboomlandia - a team I wouldn't really consider "great" at the moment but still worth mentioning - are drawn in Group E, where they'll try to get past the group stage for the first time on their third attempt, with their biggest challenge being the reigning champs Valanora, with Alphapheta - whose national team, which play in the NZEL, finished fourth in the actual league itself before going on to win the playoffs - being a possible additional challenge. Best of luck to the Phoenix. And runners-up from last time Zenic are over in Group G, along with the Head Gnashers known as The Sword Bloke, Damakuni - who are trying to bounce back from their miserable performance over in Gregoryisgodistan a couple of editions ago, where they lost all of their Group D games - and Ficiscia, whose junior team came third over in the previously-mentioned WJHC; losing 4-3 to eventual runners-up Ilyseum in the semis but bounced back with a 3-1 win over Gregoryisgodistan in the third place playoff.

So that's your lot, really. An interesting tournament, looking like it will be full of surprises, shocks and plenty of good games. So, obviously, it's probably going to end up being a complete 180 from the last tournament in Valanora. But will it be just as good as the 27th edition held in Gregoryisgodistan and Ko-oren? Or will it be even better? Guess we'll have to wait and find out.

Bobr: "We are here to win everything"
Head coach Bobr does nothing to temper fans' expectations

QUEBEC As usual in a nation that lives, breathes, sleeps and craps hockey, fan expectations are getting out of control well before the first WCoH puck has been dropped. Suddenly everybody is a hockey expert, it seems. Several Novozemlyan newspapers have published "guides" on how to beat the top teams of the world, including "put the puck to the net", "move your feet" and other pieces of tactical brilliance. Yesterday TV ran a two hour segment on different forechecking strategies.

Following team Novaya Zemlya's practice this morning we met with an unusually outspoken Bogdan Bobr to discuss expectations.

Judging by the reports from back home, Novaya Zemlya has entered the annual WCoH mass hysteria. People, and reportedly the government, expect medals. How do you and your team deal with the pressure?

It's not an issue. These guys have played hockey all their lives, it's what they do. If you are a plumber, you don't feel "pressure" if people expect you to plumb, right? It's the same thing.

You seemed to focus a lot on special teams in today's practice. Can we expect an improved power play this time around?

I would freakin' hope so. We need to move the puck faster and not become too stationary. It's not rocket science, the guys will figure it out.

Overall, your team was quite terrible offensively in Valanora. Many felt that you played overly defensive and passive. Thoughts?

So now you're the expert?

Uh, well, historically, Novozemlyan hockey has emphasized skill, speed and creativity over defensive systems play. Why doesn't the national team play more like that?

You need balance. You can't go all-out attacking against teams at this level. I rather win 2-1 than lose 8-6.

Your top line with Yerokhin, Shelagin and Golumbovsky had a pretty underwhelming tournament last time, don't you think? But yet you seem to keep them together?

To be fair it was the first time for them playing together, and they were out there against the opposing team's best lines most of the time. Krasimir and Dominik have played together for years and it can be difficult for the third guy to adapt to their style. Still, I agree they should have produced more, and I think they will surprise people once they get going. They all have skill out the wazoo, after all.

You were drawn in Group F, what's your thoughts on the opponents?

Cosumar is a strong team, obviously. The game against them will be key. Skill wise it's pretty even between us and them, it's going to come down to who wants it more. Unified Sunrise Islands could surprise as well. As for the rest of the group, they are teams we should beat but we can't take anything for granted. We see that happen in every WCoH, so we need to work our butts off every game.

Anton Lopatin won NZEL Goaltender of the year this season, but you're sticking with Iosif Bezukladnikov as your starter?

Anton's time will come for sure, but Bezu has the experience and has been our best player the last two tournaments. In my book he is a top 5 goalie in the world.

On another note, Novaya Zemlya has two consecutive group stage exits at the World Junior level, should we be worried about the future of the national team?

No. I mean, we still need to improve our development system, but I can't say I'm worried. We are not a big nation in pure population numbers, so naturally there will be some fluctuation in results from year to year. And we have seen some talented youngsters come up in the last few seasons. We'll be fine.

Finally, how far can Novaya Zemlya realistically go in this tournament?

We are here to win everything we possibly can, otherwise I wouldn't be here.

Ok. If we put it like this, how deep do you need to go to not risk losing your job?

I'm not going to discuss my job security. I will tell you this, however, if we don't make it out of the group I'm going to hand over my resignation.

Let's hope it does not come to that. Thank you for your time and good luck, Bogdan!
