ATP World Tour - News
World Tour Finals Preview - Part 1
The last event of the season is upon us, the World Tour Finals, which feature the top eight singles players and doubles teams in the world for year-end competition. In fact, this will be the last tournament held under the ATP banner, as tennis will transition to the NationStates Tennis Tour (NSTT) next year for the Astyrian Series. Without further ado, here is part one of the review of the top eight players' seasons across the World Tour:

World #1: Ardil Navsal Ardil Navsal recemented his place as the world number one after overtaking Elaine Foyner, who had been number one for a good portion of the year. In the first tournaments of the year, Foyner and Navsal reignited their rivalry as the two meeting in two Masters finals, in Antillia and in Carigrad, with Foyner winning easily in straight sets both times. Navsal struck back by winning the Santa Maria Open for the second time in the row, not dropping a set in the process. The tour then headed to Hamilton, where Navsal met new nemesis Britt Mack of Andromeda, losing a closely fought match to her in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. In Britonisea, Navsal didn't do much better, reaching the quarterfinals, where childhood friend Botack Andiam crushed the then-number two, 6-0, 6-1. His fortunes improved on the hard court season, however, and he won the Volatus Open and Cenial Masters on home courts. He became the number one when Elaine Foyner, the defending champion in Cenial, lost her quarterfinal match to Britt Mack. En route to the title, he also gained revenge on Andiam in the final. Riley Escobar snapped his winning streak of 17 matches by winning an upset victory in the final of the Cenian Open, winning 6-3 in the third, becoming the first wildcard to win the title and denying Navsal his second.

His fortunes wavered in Electrum, where he lost to one Didd Xix of Jacaelter; Xix would later fall to Hansil in the second round, and he never showed up for another tournament on the tour. It was a monumental setback for Navsal, but he continued to move on. Again on home soil, he won the New Oxford Masters on grass before reaching the quarterfinals of TOCAO in Krytenia, where he suffered a shock upset to Charles Sayer of Devonta, squandering 15 match points in the process. It was another quite surprising defeat, and in his last match before playing here in the Finals, Thierry Garzala of Neu Engollon shocked him with a 6-0, 6-4 defeat in the Fourth Kinterten. His win-loss record in 2015 was a somewhat disappointing, though tour-leading, 50-8. In the Tour Finals, Navsal hopes to cement his position as world number one and his reputation as one of the best returners, along with Elaine Foyner, in the world. Navsal's game, while focused on the return side of the equation, should fit well with these fast courts, and his speed and fast court coverage should help to set him apart from the rest of the field.

ATP World Tour - News
Season in Review - Johmer Vales

The last event of the season is upon us, the World Tour Finals, which feature the top eight singles players and doubles teams in the world for year-end competition. In fact, this will be the last tournament held under the ATP banner, as tennis will transition to the NationStates Tennis Tour (NSTT) next year for the Astyrian Series. We now turn to the world number two, Johmer Vales.

Johmer Vales started his year with mediocrity, reaching the semifinals in Cadenza but falling earlier and earlier progressively, in the quarterfinals at Albergaria, and in the second round of Burgunden and Santa Maria. He fell in the second round of Antillia as well. His fortunes improved a little in Carigrad, where he reached the quarterfinals. He did significantly better in Hamilton, reaching the semifinals, before falling in the second round in Britonisea. Transitioning to hard court, he reached the semifinals of the Volatus Open and the quarterfinals of the Cenial Masters on home soil before losing to Danjiella Zovic of Neu Engollon in the second round of the Cenian Open. He rebounded at the Electrum Slam, however, going undefeated and winning the title. Before the TOCAO tournament, Vales reached the semifinals in New Oxford before losing in the fourth round in Emberton to countrywoman Neia Dovan. Again, after this bad performance, he rebounded, winning the Kannapian Open final on grass for his second title of the year. Danjiella Zovic, who had beaten him at the Cenian Open, beat him again at the Symphonian Open, but despite the second-round loss, Vales snagged the number two place in the ATP Rankings. This definitely has been a breakthrough season for Vales, and he hopes to continue with his momentum into the next year. He has continued his form through the Tour Finals, but it remains yet to be seen whether Vales can hold up against some of the other top players in the world, namely Elaine Foyner and Ardil Navsal. He has, however, established his spot on the World Tour. Stylistically, Vales can be called a "Baby Navsal" as he exhibits a good return and good all-around play but only a mediocre serve.

ATP World Tour - News
Season in Review - Elaine Foyner

The last event of the season is upon us, the World Tour Finals, which feature the top eight singles players and doubles teams in the world for year-end competition. In fact, this will be the last tournament held under the ATP banner, as tennis will transition to the NationStates Tennis Tour (NSTT) next year for the Astyrian Series. We now turn to the world number three, Elaine Foyner.

Elaine Foyner started the season as the world #1 in the world and on top of a 10-match streak from the previous season, and she continued her streak in the first few months of the series, winning the title in Antillia, Carigrad, Hamilton, and Britonisea to add 25 more matches to that streak, defeating Ardil Navsal in two of those title matches. She then added another match to that streak, an ATP record 36, before she lost to Britt Mack in the Round of 16 in the Cenial Masters, where she was the defending champion, losing 1-6, 6-7, stumbling in the first set before roaring back in the second, ultimately to lose the tiebreak. She then traveled to the National Racquet Centre for the Cenian Open, where she reached the quarterfinals before falling to Riley Escobar, the Andromedan wildcard and ultimate champion. While she remained number one, the number two, Ardil Navsal, was gaining on her. At the Electrum Slam, where she was the defending champion, unseeded Madesun defeated her 8-6 in the fifth set, ending her reign as number one and giving the spot back to Navsal. After her defeat in Electrum, she went to the New Oxford Masters as second seed but lost in the semifinals to Dewa Putu Adrian Putra. A final straw came in the opening round of the TOCAO, where she lost in a shock four sets to Albaie's Ruben Munoz, at that time barely ranked in the top 100. She has not played a match since then, and lost the number two ranking to Johmer Vales when he reached the second round of the Symphonian Masters. The World Tour Finals will be her final tournament before finally retiring off the tennis tour at the ripe age of 34. She will likely act as a tennis coach at a Cenian national academy or coach a rising Cenian youngster.

"Bien-welk, Neu Engollon. You’re watching NETV Sports 19 with Courtside Central. I'm your host, Dom Toglani. Today is a big day for someone in the studio. Many of you know her, to my left...your right...is Lizbet Rittenhaus. Fresh from the Silver Racket, Liz is starting her first day on the job with NETV here as my co-host. Welcome, Liz!”

“Thanks, Dom. It’s a big honor and I’m glad to be here. I’m excited.”

“Oh, me too. Also, as you may have noticed from my intro and the pretty graphics at the start of the show, or your cable guide menu, whatever...We now have our own dedicated show. Karl Demais will be taking over the Sports 19 Update show. This is just ours. No roller derby, rugby, curling, or hockey scores…”

“Not that there’s anything wrong with those sports, Dom…”

“Ha! No, of course not. But this is just us. Just...Tennis. Courtside Central. It feels pretty nice, doesn’t it, Liz?”

“It sure does. It’s been quite a few years since there was a dedicated tennis only show on NETV. I’m glad to be a part of it.”

“Liz, we’ve talked before, but it’s definitely great to have you here, although we all wish it was a little later and you were still finishing up your season.”

“Dom, it is what it is. I think that we all knew I wasn’t going to be heading into the World Tour Finals. I just wasn’t at that caliber. I’m glad to have done what I did, I got to participate in the Silver Racket. I got to be in most of the major tournaments for this cycle of the ATP, soon to be the NSTT...More on that later...And I’m happy. I got my respect and I got my bit of glory.”

“You only got to play for one full cycle of the International tour, with most of your career spent on the domestic circuit. That doesn’t bother you?”

“No, Dom. Well, a little, but it’s circumstance. The decision of the NETC to fully commit to the ATP, or NSTT, just came a lot later in my career than it did for a lot of my other peers on the national team. I’ve come to terms with that, and I’m happy for the time I got. I will enjoy my retirement and my new career and I have lots of other plans. I’m going to be here, and on my off time, my partner and I will be doing a lot of traveling.”

“That’s nice. Speaking of peers. There’s another top player on the circuit that is also at the end of her pro career this year...”

“Yes, Elaine Foyner, the Cenian player. We’ve talked a bit and got to know each other well over the year. She’s an amazing individual and player. I hope we can continue a good friendship and we’re talking about possible future projects. I hope we can get her on the show.”

“That would be great. I would love to see that, too. So, you all are probably chomping at the bit out there. We probably need to get to the real deal of why we’re here today, Liz…”

“Yeah, Dom. World Finals Tour.”

“Speaking of friends and speaking of Elaine Foyner…”

“Yes, my good friend Marla Gerard, the only Neu Engollian to make it to the big show, the World Tour Finals. She’s had a rough go of it with some steep odds. Biggest of them being my other friend, Elaine.”

“Indeed. She took a clobbering at the hands of Elaine Foyner in the first match out the gates. Getting a couple games in on that slaughter. The second match of yesterday, she again took a loss, this time to Putra of Pemecutan, although not nearly as bad.”

“No, but still not bouncing back like we’d hoped.”

“Do you think Marla was severely demoralized by the first match with Foyner?”

“Uh, well, yes, I think that was obvious, Dom. It really shook her and I think Marla does need to somehow find her footing going into this third match, or she’s going to be looking at certain elimination early on. It’s already looking bleak, but I do have hope, as should all of Neu Engollon. She’s just off...and I’ve been there. This is the final big show and this type of play is intense like nothing we’ve experienced yet.”

“It decides the final rankings and really sets the tone for the next year. Do you think she has enough people in her corner? I know you wanted to be there."

"It just wasn't possible, with the Silver Racket and this show. Marla knew that and she's okay, we have plenty of our other friends there. Danjiella Zovic, Dom Ripaldi, Matti Doerwald and Alma Semmes, plus one of our newer players coming up from the Youth bracket, Felice Mareaux."

"All players that we'll see in the Astyrian Series coming up soon here. Felice especially, we are looking forward to her, as well as Marco Vrient and Teddi Rahl. Fresh faces, new challenges. It's going to be quite a year for tennis fans."

"Yes, I'm excited to be there, even though I'll be on this side of the desk. It's going to be a great series of tournaments, just as it was this past season. It's a great way to start off the NSTT cycle, and yeah...The new players coming up...again, it was great to attend the Youth tournaments and some of our joint ones, and see these kids coming in to the sport on the professional side. I don't know that they'd consider me a mentor although there was a lot of advice traded around, by myself and all the other NETC players."

"Except Paul, I'm assuming..."

"Dom! Come on, really we have to...?"

"Liz, you're on this side of the desk now, remember. Part of your job will be covering Paul Quiront, ups and downs."

"Yeah, yeah...So yeah, no, Paul has not been real helpful to the fresh players coming on to the NETC team for this year. For our International viewers out there, Quiront is...difficult. Let's put it that way. He has that reputation, and if you've seen the footage of him over the course of the year - He's had some real bad rants that have nearly got him kicked from some of the tournaments."

"Nearly being the key word, Liz. Why do you think that is, or that he's never seen sanction by the NETC, if not the NSTT?"

"Because he sells seats. Simple as that. I don't really want to get any deeper into it."

"Fair enough. Well, when we come back after the break, we’ll look at some more highlights from yesterday and make some predictions, as well as begin a preview of what we hope to see next year for NETC and the newly re-christened NSTT.”

“Thanks for tuning into Courtside Central. Stay tuned after this commercial sponsor, folks.”

OOC: Many apologies. I had intended to roleplay this tournament, but it slipped my mind.

Electrum Lawn Tennis Association - News

Only one Electrumite representative in the ATP World Tour Finals

The ATP tournament will finish where it started -- in a fitting end to the ATP tour -- the ATP World Tour Finals will be at Kannap. There is however only one Electrumite representative, and it's obvious who it is: the dream pair from Electrum, Sonya Gredello and Rosa Levinsky. The two-time women's doubles Olympic gold medallists will have another challenge - similar to defending their gold medal in the Olympics, they will seek to defend their title as the tour champion. The two of them will face a gruelling schedule. Assuming that they make the finals, they will have to play two doubles matches a day for four days (if they make it to the finals), on one day have one match, and the potential of a rest day, which is far better than what the singles players have to face.

As always, they will have to face the other top seven pairs for this season, and they are, in decreasing rank order, the Xal sisters, Ray Thomas and Hayley Von Pelt, the Rianors, Darlcheri and Rentos, the Pemucutan pair, Garry and Quehall, the runners up from last year and finally Thotan and Nagya. So far, the Electrumite pair have played four matches. In Round One, it was the rematch of the World Tour doubles final from last year, it could not have been perfectly scheduled like this: Garry and Quehall against Levinsky and Gredello. Instead of the clinical domination which was the theme of last year's match, where the Electrumites won 6-0 6-3 to win the title, it was a tougher match with grit as the Electrumites battled off exhaustion. After losing the first set 6-2, they rallied and won the next two 6-4 6-4, breaking the Quehall serve, it being the weaker of the two Britoniseans. This was quickly followed up with another three set dispatching of Cenians Darlcheri and Rentos, again losing the first set. A highlight of note was Rosa Levinsky's double fault which handed Darlcheri/Rentos the minibreak they needed to win the first set in a tiebreak, even the smallest of errors at the wrong point of time add up. Luckily, after holding six consecutive servers, the Electrumites fought back in the second and then finished the Cenians 6-1 in the final set.

Two great surprise, on the second day of competition, the Electrumites lost to Ray Thomas and Hayley Von Pelt, 6-1 6-2. Of course, after not seeing the two of them on tour for quite a while, they were completely thrown off as they had largely forgotten how they played. Usually Gredello and Levinsky would think of a strategy to defeat the pairs they knew (especially those in the top eight), but it seems like after defeating countless pairs in the Olympics and in the ATP, they just simply forgot. Thomas' hard hitting serve was just far too accurate to do damage, and Von Pelt just always seemed to position the ball just on the line, with Gredello and Levinsky losing valuable challenges for when they needed it the most. In Round Four, they defeated Thotan and Nagya (no surprises there), 6-2 6-3.

This puts the Electrumites at the top of the table with three wins and one loss at the end of Round Four (second day of competition). Darlcheri and Rentos are close behind, also with three wins, but as the Electrumites already beat them, the tiebreak was in the Electrumites favour. Everyone else is on two wins and two losses, which mean that the competition is still extremely tight at the top, those four guaranteed places into the finals are still up for anyone's taking -- except for the Britoniseans, who are sitting at the bottom of the table with four straight losses. It's a big descent from second place to last, but that can be explained with the home advantage they had, playing at their home ground gave them that boost to push on.
