WELCOME to Drums of the Drawks!

This Drum and Bugle Corps competition will take place over 2 nights, featuring 11 Corps in Preliminary and Finals competition! There will not be a cutoff placement for Finals, so all Corps will be presented twice, guaranteed! Also, the hosting and sponsoring Corps, the Drawk Corp Drum Corp, Drawk Corp Blackcoats, and Drawk Corp Synth, will each perform 1 exhibition: 1 before the Prelims, 1 as a break between presentations in Prelims, and 1 as a break between Finals presentations. In addition, the Drawk Corp Drum Corp Drumline will exhibit their skills as the Corps line up for the presentation of Finals Awards.

Venue and Schedule

The Corps will be performing at Roytopawealth Stadium, the gridiron stadium of 31,000 seats. The stadium is owned and operated by Old Mountain University outside of Drawk City, Drawkland.



Seen at this angle in this image is the pressbox and main seating area. The pressbox is located above the dark grey rows of seats.

Corps will enter the field in the top left corner of the field (bottom right at this angle) and exit in the middle of the right side (left side at this angle), under the scoreboard. They may enter in any manner they desire as long as they do not violate timing regulations.

Each Corps will have 15 minute blocks. If they are on the green of the field before or after the time cutoff, they will suffer a 1-point penalty.

Corp History

In earlier Drawkian history, the Spartans were a highly-trained group of soldiers who were the “elite force” of the Drawkian military. They were held in high esteem by the Supreme Drawkionel Iarocav. Their facility of training and lodging was located in a valley a few miles out from Sadeg, Iarocavet.

Once music and drumming because a predominant part of Drawkian culture, the Spartans, during peacetime, decided to take up the activity, and created the Sadeg Spartans, one of Drawkland’s first organized Corps.

A few centuries later, when organized Drum Corps competed, the Sadeg Spartans were the first champion of the National circuit. They have a tradition of excellence and fast-paced, technical music. The one thing they aren’t known for is their colorguard, but their Percussion and Brass are world-class.

Program

”Runnerman” is the program the Sadeg Spartans designed for this year. It’s a story based on the Drawkian messengers of old, Runnermen, who had to go long distances, often filled with obstacles, very quickly, to keep the different regiments in the military synced and informed, often saving many lives with their speed.

It features Colorguard soloist Harry Lonson as The Runnerman, and the rest of the guard is used as enemies trying to stop him from achieving his destination.

The preshow describes the Runnerman recieving his orders and messages to deliver. The “music” is Ambient Camp Noise from the Drawkland Sound Company.

The first movement shows the Runnerman setting off to his destination camp. The music is “Symphony of Speed, MVT I” by traditional Drawkian composer Gradellon.

The second movement is when the Runnerman is intercepted by enemies, and he has to fight and evade them. The music is “Jump Hard”, a popular song by the pop group Trouble in Taneran.

The third movement, the ballad, is where the Runnerman escapes the enemies, but is hopelessly lost in the wilderness. Its music is an original score written by the Sadeg Spartans Musical Staff.

The fourth and final movement is where the Runnerman finds his way through the wilderness and manages to find his way to his destination in triumph, in time to save a regiment’s camp from certain destruction. The music “Symphony of Speed, MVT V”, also by Gradellon.

The Emperor´s Ceremonial Guards
The Ceremonial Guards are part of the Emperor´s Own Corps (colloquially referred to as the Imperial Guards), the Reichs premier fighting unit. Founded in 1701 for the very first emperor. They didn´t only serve him upon the field of battle though: One of the other duties of the Guards included the parading on national holidays or during visits of foreign emissaries.

Times changed, and so did the Guards: In 1908, Rudolf II. relieved the majority of the Imperial Guards from ceremonial duties, so they could focus on the fighting. Only a small rest, a detachement of the best marchers and musicians from every Guard Regiment, were to focus on serving their Kaiser on the Victory Alley: The Ceremonial Guards.

The Modern Ceremonial Guards have some 250 Members. Their current head is Major Ansgar von Hauenstein, a traditionalist, but a good head nevertheless. The [i]Drum and Bugle Corps Competition[i] will be their very first contest of that sort.

The Grand March of the Empire
The Grand March is the traditional program used to greet guest of government or celebrate national holidays. It was first written by Emperor Johann II. in the 1750s, with elements put together from other traditional marches:
- The March of the Imperial Foot Guards (Real Life: Königsgrätzer Marsch)
- The March of the Emperor´s Own Dragoon Guards (Real Life: Hohenfriedberger Marsch)
- The March of the Emperor´s Foreign Legion (Real Life: Yorck´scher Marsch)
- Hail to the Emperor I (Real Life: Regimentsgruß)
- Hail to the Emperor II (Real Life: Zapfenstreichmarsch)
- March of the Artillery of the Guard (Real Life: Badenweiler Marsch)
- The March of the Emperor´s Dragoons (Repetition)

The Ceremonials show will depict the faithful Battle of Wahlstadt (28th of August, 1701). This battle was the decisive action of the Ziehtenian Unification War. The focus will be on the charge of the enemies IX Corps, depicted by 32 Ceremonials drawn from the Emperor´s Foreign Legion, and the consecutive counter-charge by the Emperor´s Dragoons, depicted by 8 Ceremonials drawn from the Emperor´s Dragoons themselves (Mounted, obviously). Detachements from the Imperial Foot Guards an the Artillery Guards will also be present. The Band will be divided between the two factions.

CORPS HISTORY:

The Moskau Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps was a founding member of the Xhayparia League of Marching Performance (XLMP), and is now one of the top 10 corps for the Outer-Sonnel Drum Corps Association (OSDCA), winning 5 times from the past 15 annual competitions. Founded in Moskau, Xhayparia, Sonnel, it's considered the most elegant and crowd-favourite corps from Xhayparia, just in front of the Old Heparia Cavalry.

The Corps is named for the frontiermen that led the First Rebellion in early Xhay history, The Vanguard.

Moskau Vanguard is famous for their Front Ensemble and their Colour Guard, but their marching performers (Hornline and Drumline), are mediocre in comparison. This hasn't stopped them from winning before, however.


Program

"Syndicate" is the name of this year's program from the Moskau Vanguard. The show is themed off the organized criminal organization that used to plague Xhayparia in their early years. Most importantly, the Dhay Crime Syndicate.

The preshow includes a division between the Guard, as the constables, and the marching brass performers, as the syndicate, and the drum-line as the victims.
Guard Captains are dressed in a chief's uniform, and lead the charges against the crime syndicate.

The Conductor will then walk the line of the inbetween the "cops & robbers" wearing the signature look of a Godfather- Long, wide trench coat, and a fedora. The fedora was specially made for this conductor, and it features the Vanguard's signature Star logo on it's side. This also will be his headwear for the performance, while the trench coat will be taken off for the show.

The first part will be the investigation and chase, eventually the syndicate members get away. The music selection is titled "Case Closed" by composer Tegron Schmmidt.

The second part is the celebration of the Godfather and his family. The music selection is "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson, and is transcribed for the corps by Tegron Schmmidt.

The third part is the police sneaking in on the syndicate, and infiltrating their base of operations. The music is entitled "Anoie Noir Symphony" and is composed by The Dredditra Brothers.

The final part is a combination of the previous selections musically, in reverse order. The story will have the cops finally making their break on the syndicate members, then the fight between the two sides, and ending with the police getting the Godfather in handcuffs and winning. The Conductor is taken in shackles, while finally is a great pitch blend while police siren sounds are played by electronics.

Drill is designed by renowned designer Ghredger and Guard work was created by the Fienn Administration.

Showband puts on a show

The Kolra Royal Showband put on a well-rehearsed show in Drawkland, as they absolutely nailed a performance of "Song of the Imperial March" to finish second in the preliminary round. The brass section in particular was amazing, having the highest score in that group by just 0.005 points. The Showband is now second overall behind the Emperor's Ceremonial Guards. Make sure to tune in for the finals on December 6th at 8 PM KST!

4th of December - 15:30

Everyone is nervous. Final preperations are made. Major Von Hauenstein reviews his men for the last time. Than it begins. After a minute or so of waiting, the signal is given. The first to enter are 24 men wearing the traditional uniform of the Ziehtenian Military, a red coat over a black tunic, aswell as bearskin caps, denoting them as members of the Emperor´s Own. They are followed by 15 Brass musicians and 28 Drummers, aswell as Major Von Hauenstein himself. The March of the Imperial Foot Guards is played, and the 60 Artists form up with the press box behind them. Then, the music changes (OOC: 1:20 Minutes in the video above), and 8 Cavalrymen enter the arena: They are Imperial Dragoons, and the new march is their march. The do a circle through the stadium, presenting their swords to the cheering crowd, and finally stop directly behind the Foot Guards Band.

Another sudden change of music: The March of the Emperor´s Foreign Legion. The second half of the band marches in, lead by 32 Soldiers in the distinctive yellow-blue uniform of the Foreign Legion. They don´t put on a huge show like the Imperial´s Band in getting in their position on the opposite side of the

And then the battle begins. The Foreigners fix their bayonets and advance towards the Imperials in two ranks, the Imperials repell the simulated attack by forming a bayonet wall. Now begins a wild manoeuvering of the colour guard elements (8 Men each). They start moving up to each other, simulating fire and subsequent charges. The Bands play the March of the Imperial Artillery. and then Hail to the Emperor I

It takes about three minutes for this to dance to end. The Show is about to reach is climax. The Foreigners and their band had to retreat to a position under the score board. The officer of the Imperial Dragoons has his horse rear, and then looks at the Imperials who stand behind him. He draws his sword, whilst Hail to the Emperor II starts playing.

"Dragoner, vorwärts - MARSCH" says Von Hauenstein, the March of the Imperial Dragoons can be heard again. The show ends with the Foreigners and their band routing through the exit, followed by the triumphant Imperials.

The Ceremonials are in high spirit after their show. They were given the highest scores yet in the categories Visual General Effect, Visual Profiency and Visual Analysis. Despite the comperativly poor performance of their musicians, the Ceremonials now lead the ranking. And they should hold it for the rest of the day.

DRAWKLAND NATIONAL SPORTS NETWORK

HOLLY GARRISON: Greetings! This is Holly Garrison bringing you to Outer Drawk City, where the first-ever International Drums of the Drawks Drum Corps competition is being held. Bands from far and wide have come to compete here, with several of the popular Drawk Corp Drum Corps Unit hosting and exhibiting. Of course, they are only there for pleasure and to fill gaps. The real corps we came to see were judged and ranked, as for the par. And to explain to us how it all breaks down, we have ex-brief-judge and drum corp enthusiast Davie Daniels here with us, who viewed all the Corps from a few rows below the pressbox and on the 50 for the best effect. Tell us about that, Davie!

DAVIE DANIELS: Well, those seats weren't cheap. After all, it is an international debut. Hello, by the way.

GARRISON: No doubt. So, the meat of this competition is the wide variety of competing corps. Who was out here today?

DANIELS: Well, I'll list them in order. First we had the Tomurian National Band, from Tomure. Next we had the Lindsborough Military Academy from Vaugania, then the Kolra Royal Showband from Kaboomlandia. Then there was the Ekhart Harps and Casselian Regiment from Sonnel's own Zlevecky and Luminitia, then there was a break. Next we had the Wealdheim Bards from Cosumar, and the Trans-Kanyean Orchestra from none other than Saint Kanye. Next there was the fantastic Emperor's Ceremonial Guards from The Empire of Ziehten, and Drawkland's favorite Sadeg Spartans. To finish it, there was the Moskau Vanguard from nearby Xhayparia, and the Mount Ester Universty Corp from the Royal Kingdom of Quebec.

GARRISON: A rather illustrious lineup it seems. So, describe each of the shows for us. How were the leadoffs, the Tomurians?

DANIELS: Their show was called "The 8th Wonder of the World." From what I know, they're mainly high school and college kids with good musical backgrounds. It was the smallest Corp on the field, which may have contributed to their lackluster score. Their show was upbeat and I could tell their native crowd was really into it. As far as our judges go, I'd say they weren't impressed. They had a big sound for such a small group, but I think their lack of marchers really didn't lead the visual sets to be as impactful as they could be. The actual sets and drill moves were pretty impressive, some of the best, but they just lacked power. Musically they were rather run-of-the mill, although their Visual Analysis was 3rd. There was some nice drill ideas going on out there.

GARRISON: So that Corp got 9th overall ... making them the 9TH WONDER at Drums of the Drawks. How about that Military Academy?

DANIELS: The General Effect scores for "Victory March" were certainly low. Not the lowest, but together it really didn't give them much of a score boost as it usually should. This is the main reason they got 5th rather than 4th or even 3rd. However, their Music and Drill was very decent as I could tell, but not exactly first-class. But more importantly, their Brass and Percussion were WONDERFUL. Overall, their Brass were second by .05 points, and they won Percussion in prelims. They were incredible players, and handled very technical passages very well. I was super impressed.

GARRISON: They secured a caption award and they were only the 2nd Corp to perform... that is a VICTORY in my book. What are your thoughts on the Kaboomlandians?

DANIELS: "Kaboom" certainly describes the Brass players of this Corp. The "Song of the Imperial March" was played incredibly well by their winds, scoring them 1st in Brass caption. Not only that, their Visual GE was somewhere in the top 5, their drill sets were very cool and tied in well with their theme. They also executed them very well, they were 2nd in Visual Proficiency. They were a pleasure to watch march, I loved their marching technique. Perhaps that lent itself to their well-seasoned playing as well? Who can say.

GARRISON: They might MARCH into first if they boost their impacts, I guess. Anyway, what about our overseas friends from Zlevecky?

DANIELS: From the moment the Ekhart Harps marched onto the field, they kept us all "In The Flash" ... haha. Anyway, The most enticing thing about their show perhaps, was the choice of music. It was astounding. Most shows have at least a few parts where the mind starts to wander and you lose a bit of interest, but the corp keeps you engaged the whole time. It's crazy how cool their show was. And holy crap, their percussion. They had 60 percussionists on the field. 60! Their drumline was massive, like 30-odd drummers in a block. During their drum break, I was freaking out at the sound. Their drum tech did a fine job on their tuning, because the sound cut right to me. It was incredible, and during impacts I was blown away by their skill. In fact, they were 3rd in Music GE.

GARRISON: Sounds like a FLASHY show for sure. And The Casselian Regiment, right near Zlevecky in Luminitia, went on right before the break. How did they do closing off the first half of Prelims?

DANIELS: They got 6th overall with "Fury." In Visual GE and show theme they were my personal favorite. Their Visual GE was 4th out of everyone, because their show was so awesome looking and tied into the music very well. When they first entered the field, it was empty save for one soloist on the middle, alone, and the pit discreet in the front. Then, with a bit of ambiance, all 130-ish of them come flooding onto the field, like bats. It was sight to see. Besides that, their musical aspect was decent, it just slightly lacked impact. Emphasis on slightly. Their visual was also a bit shaky, but their Brass, Music choice, and Percussion captions were all in the running for a caption award, unfortunately, they came out empty-handed. But when Finals rolls around, they're gonna give some other corps a run for their money.

GARRISON: That'll make those corps FURIOUS. So after the Blackcoats gave their show, who was up next?

DANIELS: Cosumar's Wealdheim Bards! Their show was "Valhalla: The Music of Blind Guardian," a Norse-themed show, obviously. Their musical impact was reflected in their Music GE score: Really good, but just *barely* not enough. It lacked that extra little "umph" that makes you really want to stand and cheer at the finale. Their visual scores were pretty average, and the GE was the lowest out of all of them. It seemed like most people, judges included, couldn't really see what they were doing on the field clearly. It's likely due to show design error, my best guess. Their Music choice and Brass players were really good, though. It was beautiful music, played beautifully, and conveyed beautifully. If they could get their visual act together, they might jump a spot or two in finals, but it's hard to fix drill in one night.

GARRISON: Some of them must be marching BLIND! So how were those quirky Kanyeans then?

DANIELS: Ah, those poor guys and girls in the purple and lime. Their show is "This is Your Brain on Drums," which even I admit is a cool show idea. It has a lot of potential, unfortunately, it's mostly untapped. They had a record low Music GE and a near-low Visual GE, as well as only decent visual and musical scores. However, the drill on that field kicked some serious butt. They were a mere .001 points from the Visual Analysis Caption award. That's right. 1 thousandth of a point behind the Moskau Vanguard. Now, this wouldn't have saved them from last place, but it would've been nice to come away from prelims with a bit more than wind. Speaking of which, their Brass left some to be desired. There was some decent music laid down for them, but it seems they don't have the ability to take it a run with it. Overall, cool show ideas, but a lack of real execution out there.

GARRISON: Some of them must've really be on DRUMS out there. So, next up are the current leaders, the Emperor's Ceremonial Guards.

DANIELS: Oh yes. Talk about a quality show. Not only did they sweep 3 captions, but they were better than average in most of the other captions as well. Their Visual GE score was pretty huge, and I can credit most of that to show design. The music choice wasn't especially the best, as it was mainly marches, but boy was their show cool. They had actual horses on the field! They actually rode horses! In my history of watching drum corp, I've never seen anything like it. Additionally, their show reenacted a battle from start to finish, and it was astonishing how they kept the music going through the charges and calls. It was mega impressive, their visual show was designed and executed incredibly. I don't think anyone in the crowd was in doubt of their 1st place spot.

GARRISON: A certainly GRAND performance indeed. Next up was the hometown favorites, the Sadeg Spartans, how'd they do?

DANIELS: As far as Musical General Effect goes, "Runnerman" blew everyone out of the water. Their impacts were huge, their ballad was emotional, and their dynamic contrast was world-class. I've seen symphony orchestras that can't match up to them. Their visual aspect was also high-class, they were only .05 points from taking that caption from the Ceremonial Guards as well. Their other captions were only average at worst, except their percussion, which was under .03 points from a caption award. In common words, their show and performance were good, but they lack the edge. I think with a good bit of focus and even some practice before finals, they have a good opportunity to jump one or even two spots, and certainly stay where they are at the least.

GARRISON: They're in the RUNNING for a first-place spot, I agree. What of the Xhayparian Corp?

DANIELS: Ah, the Moskau Vanguard. Not bad for a bunch of lizards ... heh. Their visual analysis took the caption, upsetting the Kanyeans by the tiniest of margins. I'll admit, their visual package was impressive, it just needed a bit of cleanliness. It wasn't the most impactful or show-related, however. And their General Effect as far as music go was mediocre at best. It wasn't BAD, per se, it just couldn't stack up to the Spartans or the Harps, or even the Guards. I expected more and was a little disappointed. But I think "Syndicate" has a chance of being greater in finals.

GARRISON: You could say they have a SHOT at it. And then there's Mount Ester University, who ended off the competition tonight. What do you think of them?

DANIELS: Those students from Quebec played "Impulse." The whole time ... I dunno. It just was too normal. Nothing about it really popped, especially as far as General Effect scores. I was a bit bored of it after the first few minutes ... it just wasn't engaging. The music was alright, and their marching technique and drill was clean, and their brass players were really good. They just ... didn't have enough, all around. I suppose that's why they got 10/11.

GARRISON: The judges most have had a bad IMPULSE when writing their scores. Well, that seems to wrap it up, doesn't it?

DANIELS: It's been a pleasure, Holly. You, and all the viewers out there, DEFINITELY should not miss Finals. It's gonna be a wild ride.

GARRISON: Thank you. The DNSN now returns you to the Olympics ...

ALERT: In the interest of results being posted promptly and tonight as promised, the RP cutoff will be at 9PM EST, rather than 10PM as last time.

Mokau Vanguard's director gave the score sheets to the corps members.

"It's something I've told you all from day one, guys. Our impacts just aren't enough. Your fortes must be fortes, give those crescendos an extra boost! The guard, you guys did fantastic, you blew many of those other corps out of the water, keep up what you're doing guys."

The director just stood there for a good 45 seconds.

"If it weren't for these General Effect scores, you could've easily ranked third or second in the entire preliminary round. Now come on guys, We gotta get back out there and blow away all these other corps. I think it's time we add the show closer that we've practiced"

The director points at the conductor.

"You think you can handle it, Grey?"

"Yes, sir" answered the head conductor, Grey Chastifol.

The corps proceeded to retreat to their block and march back to the stadium.

Fans are lining up and filing through the gates. Anticipation for Finals is building, and the first Corps' warmups can be heard faintly in the distance. Right here, is the RP Cutoff!
