Rugby is the third most popular sport in Elejamie, behind ice hockey and football (or soccer; American football is called "gridiron" and is considered a niche sport at best). Rugby union is the most popular form in Elejamie, followed by rugby league. Rugby sevens, however, is very rarely played at a competitive level; as a result, not only are all the players taken from the EJ-POWR Rugby Championship (the top rugby union league in Elejamie), but also a couple of players here have played for the national rugby union team.

However, this wasn't really a problem as, at the Londinium 7s in Nova Anglicana, the Elejamian Sevens side still managed to exceed expectations, winning all but one of their games; the only reason why they had to compete for the plate was point difference (Natanians and Nosts and Aels went through instead). Despite this, they managed to outperform their opponents. After an easy 31-7 victory over Patistan, Elejamie then bagged a very close 26-19 victory over Ko-oren before ending their amazing plate run with a 26-14 win over Welcomzia. As a result, they had high hopes going into the AVBF 7s...

And, with a high-scoring 43-7 opening win against Maramark, it looked like Christmas was coming early. However, their hopes were dashed when they had the rematch against their biggest rugby rivals Aels; luckily, the score wasn't as bad as last time - 24-10 - but a loss was still a loss. They then bounced back with a 38-0 shutout victory over Novella Ramogna before succumbing to a second loss, this time 19-17 to Marion Oaks. Fortunately, a 24-17 victory over Semarland was enough to put them in the cup. Unfortunately, they were up against Londinium 7s cup winners Natanaians and Nosts, who got revenge for the group stage loss in the last tournament by winning 33-7; N&N would later finish fourth, losing 26-24 to hosts Neu Engollon and 29-19 to the Scottopian Isles.

And now they're back, looking to prepare for the upcoming Rugby 7s tournament at the Olympics. With the union's team amazing performance at the last Rugby Union World Cup - topping their group, winning their Round of 16 game and crashing out in spectacular fashion, 43-28 against their other rugby rivals Ko-oren - fresh in everyone's memories, it's time to ask the big questions? Will Elejamie make it to the cup? Will they be able to lift it? And will they be drawn against Aels (who hosted the aforementioned RUWC) for the fourth time in a row? Only time will tell...

Roster - Londinium Sevens
Rugby in Racao
Rugby is currently one of the most popular sports in Racao, along with athletics and association football. It was originally introduced to Racao with British colonizers; army officers and soldiers would play the game during their off time. Although rugby has been consistently popular in Racao for the past seventy years, Racao has never fielded a rugby team of any sort due to the lack of funding and a lack of development of players. Most rugby played in Racao is informal and played in streets and alleyways, with however many players are available at any one time. As a result of this structure, most rugby players in Racao tend to lack what foreigners would call technique or finesse. However, they do have a considerable amount of raw talent and skill gained from years of experience. Only recently have academies opened to develop this talent into something on par with rugby teams in other nations. Because of this recent development, most of the players on Racao's roster are quite young, with none older than 24.

There is a rugby union league in Racao, with 8 teams, founded about a year ago. Voanorova Valiant was crowned champion, with Port Louis Liberty only one point behind in the standings. Several of Racao's sevens players currently play in this league. Plans are currently in progress to establish a small sevens league. Sevens rugby in Racao is a little smaller than union and league rugby, but because its smaller structure is more entertaining and exciting and less time-demanding, it is on track to grow to be the most popular form of rugby in Racao. The Racao Rugby Federation hopes to achieve success at this rugby tournament, and hopes that this success will further prompt development of rugby in Racao.

Racao performed well during the Londinium Sevens until a devastating loss in the semifinals to Natanians and Nosts as well as to Nova Anglicana in the third-place match, a match that many think should have been the real final rather than the third place match. Nonetheless, what happened happened, but Racao came to the Alpen View Beer Festival ready for revenge against Nova Anglicana and Natanians and Nosts in their quest for a sevens rugby title. They failed at the last hurdle, reaching the final. Now they hope to achieve more on home soil and finally bring home the title that they so desperately want.

About Rugby in Ethane

Rugby in Ethane has grown in popularity recently. 10 years ago, if you were walking down the streets in Ethane, and asked what the sport of rugby was, the majority of people wouldn't have been able to tell you, apart from the small niche market that rugby used to appeal to back then. However, now, with the rise of Ethane on the international sporting stage, their success in the IBX so far, their involvement in the IBC and the Olympics, their increased tennis involvement and their 19th place in the Rugby World cup, sports that were previously unheard of before are now getting the recognition they deserve.

The Ethane Rugby Union (ERU) has been set up in Ethane to monitor the game in Ethane, and if the game becomes popular enough, to set up rugby union and/ or rugby league across the country. The ERU chose many of the fine rugby players that successfully represented Ethane at the rugby world cup, and it is highly assumed that because of the nature of the success of Ethane in this tournament, increased involvement in further rugby tournaments internationally is expected. The creation of a league system in Ethane is also expected within the next few years, which will fit in with the schedule of the current football league system that runs once a year, and is extremely popular across Ethane. At the current rate of growth of the popularity and participation of rugby, it is highly doubted that rugby won't be the second most popular sport in Ethane within the next five years, thanks to the rugby world cup initiative which saw many attempts to increase the popularity and participation of rugby throughout the country during the world cup. This is generally thought to have helped in the uptake of rugby of 200,000 students across the school age range within 5 weeks, with this number expected to increase dramatically during the rest of the winter term, in the run up to the school rugby season. 500 schools are now offering rugby union as an extra- curricular activity, with many more schools being encouraged to take it up.

Many people will be hoping that this rugby sevens tournament will bring more success to Ethane in the rugby world, and further boost participation figures across the board of rugby formats. While being a different format to the rugby world cup, the ERU will be looking to be putting their best players into this game, and continuing the run of success on the international rugby stage that Ethane, as a new team to the international stage, is having.

Port Louis Rugby 7s Preview

The Nova Anglicana Lions find themselves once again entering a 7s tournament, this one in the island nation of Racao, in the city of Port Louis. In the first two tournaments in this newly created 7s series, the Lions took third place in the one they hosted (Londinium), beating the Racao side now hosting this tournament, and fell in the quarterfinals in the Alpen Valley 7s to the hosts, Neu Engollon. Both tournaments saw the Lions reach the Cup playoffs and play well in the group stage, but they will clearly be looking for victory in this tournament. The Lions consider themselves to be one of the better 7s sides in the world, and not winning the Londinium 7s tournament really hurt their pride.

Fortunately, they find themselves in a group that should allow them to ease into the cup playoffs. Two of the teams they will face, Oisinistan and Levivania, are making their debuts in this tournament and should be easy pickings for the Lions. Oisinistan, by all accounts, play with an aggressive style and will no doubt be looking to rack up as many points as they can, led by scrum half Keith Haddon. The Lions will hope to take advantage of that aggressiveness to score off of turnovers and exploit the spacing caused by transitioning from attack to defense. Little is known about Levivania, but they shouldn't be much of a problem. Frenline Delpha, on the other hand, present a little bit more of a challenge. They were quarterfinalists in Neu Engollon as well, and currently occupy the #10 spot in the world. However, their relative lack of experience should allow the Lions to take advantage of their mistakes and come away with the win.

The Lions are favored to win their group, so let's take a look at their potential opponents. In Group 1, hosts Racao have a tough row to hoe. Only Lisander in their group look to be an easy win, as the Scottopian Isles and Hutanjia should give the hosts a run for their money. They ought to come out on top, but perhaps more battered than some of the other teams. In Group 2, Natanians and Nosts are the #1 ranked team and should win the group, but Elejamie is a strong team as well and a dark horse to win it all. The other two teams, Ethane and Sioux Lookout, should be cannon fodder for the two top teams. In Group 3, Neu Engollon have the experience and power necessary to win, but they could face a stiff challenge from either United States of Devonta or Abanhfleft. First place advances to the cup, which should be Racao, Natanians and Nosts, Neu Engollon, and Nova Anglicana. However, you never know what will happen in the chaotic world of 7s rugby.

Port Louis Sevens - Lisander national sevens team

Lisander is making a big effort to boost rugby to the top of the world. The Lisander Rugby Union started a 10-season plan to make the country one of the top 5 nations in Multiversal Rugby. "We need our people watching it. We need our people loving it, like baseball made it", said Andreas Vins, Chairman of LRU. To start, the LRU made a team with the "best 12 players in their positions all over the great nation of Lisander". From the Biggest teams of the Pro10 (The Lisanderian League), 12 men came. These 12 men will represent Lisander in Racao Sevens. This is not a easy job. They're in fact unexperienced. But there's one nation. 5 billion people who believe on them.

the Lisander Sevens team returned to field. Losing to Hutanija 31-7, the team gave a little bit more of blood to clinch one more try, with Matthew Gear covering Livon's area in right, and finding a way between Wakala and Nepedku before fall between the posts. 31-12. Kevin Armada then had a easy job to shoot the conversion, 31-14.

After it, the Spiders still had one try to finish the game, in a try (and following conversion) by Apegku, after a scrum inside 22's of Lisander. 38-14, game set.

National rugby sevens team

This will be the third time that Abanhfleft will be participating in an international rugby sevens tournament. Rugby sevens is, quite frankly, a fringe sport in the Democratic Republic, with most of its players being either rugby union or rugby league players in their professional careers. However, the country simply couldn't resist the temptation to go for some sporting silverware, and therefore the rugby sevens national team that was assembled and sent to Londinium in Nova Anglicana for yet another shot at glory is now back and in Racao for more glory, and this time they want more than just a bowl. They want a cup!

"Neu Engollon, we're back at it again! I'm your host, Magda Wertauer, on the NETV Sports 7 Update, and we're at the Port Louis Rugby Sevens in Racao. Predictions for the Goats going into this tournament were pretty good, considering their performance in the AVBF Sevens, and the fact that many of them also play on the Union National squad. We don't really need a reminder that these are the same boys that brought home the World Cup just recently, do we? They played hard and showed the necessary championship spirit. Many of those same players are taking the pitch in Port Louis for the Sevens squad, and so it begs the question whether they kept warmed up and recuperated enough from their time in Aels.

So, it was to everyone's and no one's shock that the Goats lost to the Devontans so horribly this most recent match. These things do happen and there's no reason to get hugely upset over it. We do take our rugby very seriously in the Confederacy, don't we?
Now, I guess the fact that it was the United States of Devonta team and not say, Ko-oren or Nova Anglicana or another solid rugby team, that we lost against them by such a margin, it might be more believable. However, watching how the Goats played out there takes some of the mystery out of why we were served these results from the Neu Engollon National team.

Numerous penalties against Caravalo, Dorff and Gondino were just the icing on the crap cake. The fumbling by regular starters Renvier, Fendini and Emmett that caused turnovers were almost more agonizing to Coach Cosento. Just for fun, let's put this up on the screen:
Coach Cosento's reaction during the final whistle in extra time during the championship RWC finals match with Ko-oren. Pure joy! Now...Here's Coach Cosento reacting to Renvier's sloppy hospital pass being picked off by a Devontan flanker and run in for a try against the Goats...Ha! That is an ugly face, is it not? I guess I'm the only one that can laugh yet. The studio crew in here...You folks can't see it, of course...They are all stony faced. Tough day, tough crowd.

So, obviously, the Goats need to bring up their game for this next upcoming match versus Abanhfleft. It's their last shot for the Cup and it's a slim one. They needed that victory today and now we all realize that it was more than just a bump in their journey for another Sevens Cup win. Not only do they need a win, by a wide margin; but they need Devonta to lose against unranked, winless Prenteron. That's a tall order, folks. Prenteron has valiantly tried to compete on the Sevens pitch but so far they haven't shown the caliber needed to go toe to toe with the other Sevens squads of NSRB. No coincidence that the match against Prenteron is Neu Engollon's only win of the tournament so far.
The Goats need a miracle and whatever voodoo it is that you do at home, now is the time to get that started. Lucky socks and sweaters, altars...Let's just not have any animal sacrifices, accorzu?

-Hey, the color doesn't matter at all. You know what we have to do here. Play against these experienced men. Who promised me to reach the top of World Rugby before my retirement?

Silence and small talk in locker. Assen looked to the 12 players.

HEY, you stupid pricks! This was not a rhetorical question! I asked each one of you. Who promised me to reach the top of World Rugby before my retirement? Armada? Livon? Gear? Blanche? Maximilian? Who promised me?

-Me. Me, coach! Me too! - The team shouted.

-And what are you waiting to go up to the field and start to fulfill the promise?

Lisander fought. Bravely. But it was not enough, unfortunately. 22-26 against Top 10 squad of Scottopian Isles.

Group 2 Roundup - Elejamie
Dave Carrey - Port Louis, Racao

Ah, the Port Louis Sevens. It ran a little bit behind, to the point where I think it was going to get cancelled. I don't know what happened, like if the managers had a bit of a brainfart trying to get everything organised in time, but it seemed like everyone came all this way for nothing. Fortunately, this was not the case as, a couple of days behind scheduled, the tournament finally kicked off. And let me just say that this has to be one of the most exciting rugby tournaments I've ever commented on, thanks to high score after high score. And with the Olympics just around the corner, I think that this is pretty much the final test, to see who'll go home with that all-important gold medal. Wait, it's a demonstration sport and not an actual event? Well, let's see who'll go home with... whatever they'll receive.

Either way, it's the Port Louis Rugby Sevens. And there are a couple of questions that kept springing to mind. For example, is it me or does it seem a bit... lacking? No Aels (hooray! The streak has been broken!), no Ko-oren, no Quebec... Saying that, we do have our old friends - and I really do mean "old friends" as I think they're one of the best Sevens teams I've come across - Natanaians and Nosts who, quelle surprise, were put in our group; this isn't going to be the last time as I've checked the Olympics schedule and we're up against them there as well. Fortunately, we've also got a couple of newcomers joining us, Ethane and Sioux Lookout. If you think Ethane rings a bell, then they're the team that came 19th in the tournament, coming third in the plate section of the tournament; they came third in Pool H, winning only one game against eventual last placers Oisinstan but, in the rest of their games, they lost to Ekoz, Abanhfleft and Devonta, then going on to beat Aquitayne 24-14 in the plate quarter-finals before losing by the same score-line to Barunia, where they eventually finished with a 20-19 win over Kaboomlandia (who were in the same pool as Elejamie). Sioux Lookout, on the other hand, are complete newcomers, this being their first rugby tournament.

And so we begin with our match against first newcomers Ethane. A win was expected, as Toda seems to have somehow improved his kicking abilities (maybe to be chosen for the next RWC) and Ethane are pretty low on the rugby ladder. But, let's face it, no one was expecting this: 34-0. You would think that they would've scored at least a drop goal or beefed up their defence. But, sadly, we were able to walk all over them in a quite exciting match that ended 34-0. That isn't a shutout, that is opening the door to see who it is and then slamming it in their faces.

player I haven't introduced yet.

And that was literal, by the way, as they very nearly scored an early try when Darien Oakley managed to run the length of the pitch; if he didn't try passing it to Bret Prescott, then Mical Caerofim probably wouldn't have intercepted it and began the Elejamian offensive, where he passed it to David Kramer, who passed it to Marcus Ruiz, who then passed it one last time to Mike Decker, who threw himself past the Ethanian try-line for the try; not a single Elejamian player got tackled during that play. Gary Toda rounded everything off with a spectacular conversion to make it 7-0. Speaking of Toda, he was called to do a penalty after Ethanian flyhalf Emery Appleby accidentally cut Mike Decker's head in a maul; Decker came off for a little while and was replaced by Tom Correy, Appleby was sinbinned for two minutes (although, from what I gathered at the bar, the two of them made up during or after the match) and Toda slotted it in between the posts to extend the lead. Not long after coming on, Tom Correy made it 15-0, just managing to put the ball down before he was tackled by Wolfe Ianson. Gary Toda converted it and, eventually, the half ended 17-0.

The second half was a bit less painful for both sides, as Decker was stitched up and returned to the pitch for the second half, whereas Ethane were trying their hardest to get back into the game. However, it wasn't until roughly the third minute when a try was scored; Gary Toda slamming the ball down on the ground before successfully converting it to make it 24-0. Despite this, Ethane still pushed on, even being able to score a try not long after, when scrum-half Gallagher Ainsworth, who briefly replaced Dillian Raines, put the ball down past the Elejamian try-line. However, it was disallowed by the referee when it turned out to have been knocked on by Vinal Garnett. Five and a half minutes into the half, Elejamie scored its fourth and final try of the match, with captain Diego Molina leaping over Ethanian winger/full back Perry Neal before sliding across the in-goal area, ball in hand. Toda converted it and, in the last play, scored a drop goal to end the game 34-0 in Elejamie's favour in a match that, if it weren't for Natanians and Nosts' 38-0 destruction of Sioux Lookout, could easily be described as "total humiliation".

Speaking of the Natanians and Nosts, they were our opponents on the second match day. Since they were - and, to my knowledge still are - ranked #1 at the time, it was definitely going to be a close match. After all, in both our sevens encounters, it's been one victory and one loss each - 21-17 to Elejamie at the Londinium 7s group stage (Group C) and 33-7 to Natanians and Nosts at the AVBF Sevens Cup quarter finals - so obviously both sides wanted to get one over their opponents. And, again, Captain Kaeso appeared to have been in fine form in the previous game against Sioux Lookout so it wouldn't have been a surprise if it carried on in this game.

And guess what? It wasn't a surprise. Captain Kaeso did what he does best and opened up the scoring with a drop goal, making it 3-0 to N&N. Unfortunately, their celebrations were short-lived when Phil MacKenzie managed to avoid a tackle by Cáius Cláudius Numídio, before passing it to Mical Caerofim, who scored the first try of the game, with Gary Toda putting the cherry on top of the cake. Not to be defeated, the Natanians and Nosts managed to hold off any Elejamian attacks. In the final play, Captain Kaeso managed to score another drop goal, ending the first half 7-6 in Elejamie's favour. At this point, it looked like it was going to be a close match.

However, the second half showed Elejamie was a bit more willing to go on the attack. Indeed, less than half a minute after the start, David Kramer managed to bring Gabriel Mihai Ognek to the ground, with Gary Toda swooping the ball before Captain Kaeso got his hands to it. From there on in, he, Decker and Molina made their way to the N&N in-goal area, before captain Diego Molina extended the Elejamian lead to 12-6; Toda nailing the conversion to add a couple more on the board. Although Captain Kaeso made it 14-9 thanks to a third drop goal, they were pretty much out of the match when, in the fifth minute, Big Phil MacKenzie managed to make it to the in-goal area, gently placing the ball down for a try. After a third successful conversion, Toda made it try number four, with yet another conversion to boot. A drop goal in the last minute by - who else? - added a few much needed points, but it wasn't enough as, in the end, Elejamie took their place at the top spot thanks to a 28-12 victory.

And, finally, we had Sioux Lookout. They were having a bit of a rough time in the tournament, being absolutely hammered 38-0 by N&N on day one and 38-7 by Ethane on day two. So, obviously, it looks like that Cream of Sioux was going to be the Soup of the Day for the third time in a row (and that will be the last time I'll ever use that analogy - DC). Especially since Elejamie were top of the table, having won both their games so far and a third win and a place in the Cup was inevitable.

The first half saw Elejamie get off to an amazing start when Marcus Ruiz scored an amazing try, catching the ball and running the entire length of the pitch, jumping over a couple of players, before gently putting the ball on the ground. Gary Toda then nailed the conversion and, shortly afterwards, made it 14-0, thanks to a spectacular try. In the fifth minute, Mical Caerofim booted the ball all the way across the pitch, Mike Decker caught it and made a mad dash for the Sioux try line. He got tackled, but Diego Molina managed to get to it in time and, with a third conversion from Toda, managed to add another set of seven to the board. A 21-0 scoreline going into the end of the first half looked like a possibility until their flyhalf - I can't remember his name, might have to look it up later - scored a try. Then nailed the conversion. Oh well, a 21-7 scoreline's not that bad.

The second half saw Sioux Lookout repeat the same feat - a try, followed by a conversion, all from the same person - to make it 21-14. Fortunately, we were able to get back in it halfway through the second half, thanks to Phil MacKenzie making his way past the opposition and burying the ball in the Sioux in-goal area; Gary Toda made it four out of four for a score of 28-14. And, for good measure, MacKenzie did it again about a minute later. However, Toda's kick just went wide, making it the first time in the tournament that he's missed a kick. However, in the last play, he more than made up for that by scoring a drop goal to finish the match 36-14 in Elejamie's favour. A brilliant result from a brilliant game that from a tournament where there isn't a single stop that hasn't been pulled.

So, to recap, Group 2 saw Elejamie top the group with three wins and a point difference of +72. Natanians and Nosts managed to finish second, thanks to that 38-5 victory over Ethane. Ethane themselves came third and Sioux Lookout came last, having lost all of their games and finish with a point difference of -91. I am not making that up. As a result, this means that Elejamie will compete for the cup, where they'll play hosts Racao; N&N will take on Hutanjia, who are legends in rugby league but their union and sevens sides leave much to be desired, in the plate; Ethane will see if they can get one step closer to the bowl as they face The Scottopian Isles; and Sioux Lookout will see if they can get a single measly win in their match against newcomers Lisander in the shield portion of the tournament.

So, who do you think will win? I don't like to blow my own trumpet but I think that Elejamie will easily win the cup, seeing as they've managed to thrash their opponents with little to no difficulty. Failing that, Nova Anglicana's a pretty solid choice for the cup, seeing as they burned the brightest in their group, finishing off with a 43-5 obliteration of Oisinistan. Natanians and Nosts will probably win the plate, seeing as it's fair that they win something. Neu Engollon, who haven't been on form all tournament, will probably get themselves together and take home the bowl. And Lisander, who have easily been the best out of the worst, will receive the shield. Oh, and Sioux Lookout for the wooden spoon. Then again, I could be wrong and... I don't know... Devonta takes home the cup. Who knows? I guess we'll have to see.
