"Hey, why are we sending all these women to Mattijana?" a bespectacled man asked the Olympiad head of the Serbian Empire.

The head looked at the man in glasses and sighed. "The women in question are Olympics hopefuls who need to prove themselves in international competition before the Winter Olympics. That's why all of them are going there," The head stated with a smile.

Then an entry sheet of the short list of viable contenders was revealed. The names mentioned a few remaining competitors from the Olympic effort several years ago. Some of the others were new and young. One of them, Karine Hoxha only recently had turned eighteen. "She displays a lot of promise and will serve this nation proudly for many years," the head explained.

"But she's only eighteen. Couldn't we get someone a bit older?" another individual asked the head. This one was a journalist from the Serbian Sporting News.

"Remember what I said earlier. She's good enough now and she'll only continue to improve in the future. That's my hopes for Karine," the head explained.

Friday 30th October, The Hollesbirjke, Central Mattijana

The valja stadium in Skopjana, part of which was cut into the side of the mountainnear to the Slonske-Lidenburg sliding centre, had just about filled up with Mattijanans and foreign supporters. The Stadium was normally used for ice skating and hockey and the some of the ice rink had been kept intact. The remainder had been carpeted over and a oval track formed around the outside. As the last spectators filtered in, the lights were dimmed and spotlights directed at the central area. An orchestra began to play a Mattijanan folk song with a pair of figure skaters taking to the ice and performing the accompanying dance. After the first verse and chorus, the music took a slightly more modern and dramatic mood with a heavy beat and sharper and increasingly more acrobatic moves from the skaters, who had been joined by another couple of pairs.

The tune ended with a flourish and the skaters bowed and exited the stage amidst warm applause. Whilst on the plinth in the centre of the stadium floor, Mattijanan radio presenter, Tony Japnaž stepped up.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the opening ceremony of the NS Iced runnings sliding competition here at the Hollesbirjke in Mattijana. Over the next few days, we will see some of the best sliders around the world compete on the two tracks here, the traditional Slonske-Lidenburg centre and the sleek and modern Mattijana Sliding Centre. Before we welcome the athletes, there will be a short piece about the history of Mattijanan and regional sliding."

The film showed the first pioneers of Mattijanan winter sport sliding down the hill where the Slonske-Lidenburg track now stands and moved forwards to the design of sleds and tracks in the modern era. It ended with a bobsleigh sliding into white mist.

The camera switched to the entrance of the stadium floor which had now filled with white smoke.
"And now for the main event. Please welcome the athletes!
First up, Aqullian!

The four man bobsleigh team sent by Aquillian to the games walked into the arena, prompting a cheer from those who had made the journey as well as respectful applause from the other supporters in the stadium.

Avercari!

Elejamie! The athletes followed going onto their own lap of honour before settling in the centre of the floor.

Frenline Delpha!

Gim!

Kaboomlandia!

Natanians and Nosts!

Neu Engollon!

Sjovenia!

Thaldor!

The Transalpine Republic!

The Serbian Empire!
As the final group of visiting athletes made their way around the stadium, all cheered on by their respective supporters. The biggest cheer of all rose around the ground.

And finally, please welcome the host nation. Mattijana!

The Mattijanan athletes jogged round the stadium with the minister of sport, responsible for organising the games, following at a more sedate pace behind. The athletes eventually found their way to the middle and prepared for a few short speeches.

The minister of sport was first to move to the plinth in the middle.

"I want to keep this fairly short, but thank you all for coming and welcome especially to the athletes and supporters of all the visiting nations who I hope feel welcome in here in Mattijana. I would like to thank the union of winter sport in Mattijana for helping to organise the games here in the central Alps and the volunteers who will help staff the events themselves.
Secondly to the sports departments of Sjovenia and Frenline Delpha who helped especially to get this event off the ground in the first place and to provide the crucial admin tasks such as signups and the host vote.
Finally, I wish good luck to all of the teams competing and enjoy our wonderful food and hospitality, especially the sausages. Thank you and goodnight!

The other person to make a speech was the captain of the Mattijanan four man bobsleigh team. He promised fair and clean racing as well as that he and his fellow athletes would try their hardest to create a memorable spectacle for the home fans as well as for visitors.

With that, a smooth opening ceremony ended with some fireworks popping out of the roof and all the fans and athletes headed back to their accomodation to prepare for the action.

"Dem nuh like we bredda." Jerani Murray said with a scowl. "Yuh nuh see 'ow dem a look pon we? Dem feel seh we nuh bizniz, an' dis a joke ting. Mi nuh come 'ere fi deal wid dis fuckery." He had a point. The luke-warm reception the Aquilliano team had received at the opening ceremony was, as Jordan Broderick put it, "even colder than Christmas day in Genesia."

In a way, it was to be expected. Aquillian had a tropical climate, and their bobsleigh team was made up of four elite sprinters. They'd not had to undergo any qualifying races or anything of the sort. It gave the impression, to some at least, that they couldn't be entirely serious.

"Relax nuh man?! Yuh always come wid yuh negative vibes." Jordan Broderick was the team's unofficial leader -- probably a result of his status as the nation's premier sprinter of the past decade -- and nothing ever seemed to faze him. "All we gotta do is relax, an' race. Every ting else follow, yuh nuh 'ear wha' coach tell us?" Jerani only sucked his teeth in reply, and an awkward silence followed.

"A weh di coach deh anyway Jordan?" said Kyron Grant. Kyron was the youngest of the four, and the most excited about traveling abroad -- he'd only ever left the island twice in his entire life; both time for the Rushmori Games -- until he'd been informed of the likely weather conditions. "Hol' up. Yuh mean fi tell mi seh we a go travel inna snow, to some high-up-mountain-top village fi slide down ice?" He'd exclaimed. When it was pointed out that bobsleigh was a winter sport, and sort of required snow and ice, he'd shrugged and said "cha! Me gaan tek two string ves' an' every ting irie nuh rass. Yuh feel seh a likkle snow come drop from de sky an' stop me win tings? Cha!"

The only member of the team who remained silent the whole time was DeMarion Morrison, the driver. He was sitting quietly on his bed, studying photos of the track's turns. Unlike the others, he'd not been fortunate enough to medal in athletics at any other time. He'd failed to qualify for the national finals six months ago, and at thirty-three, it was probably his last chance. He likely wouldn't be representing his nation again. "Yo, D!" Jordan called to him as he made toward the door with the other two. "We gaan fi ketch a couple drinks, yuh waan fi come wid?"

"Nah man, mi gaan finish preparations."

"Yuh nuh look too hard pon de photo dem, bredda. Yuh gaan tun blin' an' we nuh bring no substitute, seen?"

DeMarion chuckled a little. "Gwaan guh ketch drink, man. But nuh badda chase nuh panty, mi know how unu stay."

Jordan stumbled out of the door still laughing.

The first action from the mountain this morning comes from the Mattijana Sliding Centre where the two man bobsled competition gets underway. Jozefa Gorski and Tatyana Rudaski of Sjovenia lead the way after run 1 with Emily Dayton and Chelsea Smith just a tenth of a second down. The highest home runners sit in third, Janz Alzaska and Andrez Igolov 11 hundresths of a second off the pace.
Runners below the line are not yet eliminated, but must try and get themselves above by the end of the next run. However, there is definitely room for improvement with all of the field within one second of the fastest time.

Day 1 - NS Iced Runnings

Two-man bobsled

The two Kaboomlandian two-man bobsled teams are off to a great start. Emily Dayton and Chelsea Smith are placed second in the two-man event with a time of 52.27 seconds, only one-tenth of a second behind the first-place team of Jozefa Gorski and Tatyana Rudaski of Sjovenia. Meanwhile, Brad Berg and Nicklas Watson are placed fifth, only a tenth of a second behind Dayton and Smith and only two-tenths of a second behind the leaders in a very tight race.

Skeleton

Alexander Skårsgren is placed first after the first day with a wicked 53.07 second run on the Slonske-Lidenburg track. He is currently nursing a lead of 0.18 seconds over the second-place racer, Genevieve Renaud of the Transalpine Republic, while Mogo Ngurlu of Avercari rounds out the top three.

Day 2:
Skeleton run 2, results:
The first session on day 2 took place at the Slonske-Lidenburg centre where the skeleton competition has reached the halfway stage. Genevieve Renaud is the new leader after a poor second run from run 1 leader Alexander Skarsgren saw him drop to second. A 3-way battle for the final podium place is also building up nicely, but there is still a lot of sliding to come in the finals tomorrow. However it's the end of the competition for Romana Brankovic, Reinhard Feinlau, Caius Caeso dos Santos and Ljlljana Nemanjic as they could not find a way into the top ten and are eliminated.

1 Genevieve Renaud (Transalpine Republic) 53.25 53.11 1:46.36

David Marsten's team fell to fifth place after a mediocre second run. They weren't sharp on their turns, and their push off was out of synch. The team had previously won the first race, but that was but a distant memory as they fell down the leaderboards. We asked Marsten what he thought of the fall and how he and his team were preparing for the next run.

"We were just not clicking. We had been squabbling before the race, and it transfered to poor race results. We didn't do the push-off right, and the start doomed us. The run down the track didn't help matters either, as our turns weren't on point. I blame myself for that aspect. Overall, the nerves were running high before the race started. As expected, that didn't translate well into a solid run. We hope to improve in our mext run, and maybe win this thing."

In other news, Dourgins finds himself down in the ninth hole after the first finals run. Will he be able to secure at least a bronze medal? Only time will tell. The skeletoner from Ice Peak started Skeleton at the age of 16. He first started at the Kilpert D. Training Academy for Winter Disciplines. After about a week, his coach and his dad both saw potential in this child that they had never seen before. His dad had onvested thousands of dollars into his son, and he trained woth him every day. It wasn't long before Dourgins was noticed by Frenlinian scouts. After being recruited to join the winter olympics team, Dourgins was personally invited at the age of 23 to participate in this tournament. We wish him the best of luck for his final run later tonight.

In two-man, Stacey and Pelsby are on the verge of eleimination as they stand at the fifthteenth spot. We are rooting for them all the way, and wish them good luck. Trotans also did not finish both of his luge runs, eliminating him from the competition. We wish all our remaining athletes good luck with the remainder of the Iced Runnings event.
I don't know how long I'll be back, but I just thought I'd stop in and say hi, at least.

After a disappointing first run -- "who's bright idea was it to drink copious amounts of rum the day before you race?" Coach had... well not so much asked as demanded -- the Aquilliano bobsled team had taken to the slope for a training run late in the evening. It hadn't gone well. Nervous, tense, anxious? Something like that. Between DeMarion Morrison's tenseness [is that even a word? - Ed.] and Kyron Grant's tightly-wound-ready-to-explode nature -- there had been a "minor incident" at the bar the previous night, apparently -- the team just couldn't get focused.

After an earful from their coach, the four men had sat silently in the hotel room, stewing in their own failure. Until Jordan Broderick spoke up, anyway. "Yuh know wha' rang?" He asked. "We need fi nyam propah food, seen? Come mek wi guh fry up two fish an' curry a bloodclaat goat an' nyam like king."

His natural ability to cut tension was amazing. It was probably the main reason he'd largely dominated the 100m and 200m events at Champs1. Among all the sprinters who had impressed in events organised by the Asociación Atlética de Administración Aquilliano (Quad-A) Broderick was easily the most successful, most popular and most marketable. Something he'd made the most of until suffering back to back ligament injuries two years ago. The road to recovery had been long and painful, and the former superstar sprinter had failed to qualify for Champs this time around, stunning quite literally everyone. When he'd got the call from the coach, he'd snatched at it. It was a chance to show that he wasn't finished. He wasn't letting that slip away.

The others... harder to tell. It mattered most to DeMarion, probably. He'd stumbled in the final qualifying heat for the 200m, and failed to reach Champs, too. Jordan remembered him from the high school championship races, though. He'd always been chasing the pack. Not close enough to threaten, but not far enough away to be entirely forgotten. No man's land. He'd only be in that limbo space for a few seconds at a time, but a few seconds can be an eternity to some.

"Yo, D..." Jordan nudged the driver. "Wha yuh seh? We gaan guh 'ave a team cookout like we back 'ome?"

He knew the answer before DeMarion spoke. It was written all over his face, a huge grin. "Yah, mon."

* * * * *

Aquillian's second run had been much improved. After relaxing with some traditional Aquilliano food -- and it's natural "performance enhancing" effects -- the night before, the team had slept well; a known side effect of these particular PEDs, perhaps. Instead of nervousness, there was swagger. Instead of intense focus, there was a calmness in DeMarion that washed over the whole team. Even Kyron smiled a couple times on the approach to the hill.

Clocking a sub-52 time on their second run, Aquillian barely scraped into the finals, but in doing so, they changed a few opinions. It's difficult to argue that many would expect to see four sprinters from a tropical island nation competing in a winter sports event. It's easy to believe that many would have seen the entire thing as some kind of joke... not any more.

1 "Champs" is the name given by Aquilliano to the national athletics championships, organised by Quad-A every year. It generally takes place a month after the Track and Field League of Osarius completes, in late summer. The event normally lasts about a week, and showcases the best Aquilliano athletic talent from high school age groups up to full senior level.
President: Horace Daley | Population: ~24 million | Capital: Genesia, Centrale

A moderately conservative, somewhat-religious nation with a lingering resentment for Osarius, their former colonial oppressors.
If you want a RL reference point, this nation is supposed to be a cultural, social and political mélange of Mexico and Jamaica.

I will sometimes RP in an approximation of Jamaican Patois. Apologies in advance ;)
