Guessing Game Resumes as Honu Escape Palm View's Grasp
Story by Abraham Shepherd

Japrola—For the South Seas University Honu football program, it may be difficult to determine what is the bigger storyline coming out of matchday seven against Palm View University. The Honu notched another win against the Dolphins, sweeping this season's tilts against Palm View University; still, the team escaped with a mere one point victory at Dolphin Stadium after a 33 point shutout earlier this year at The Plumeria Garden.

Even so, the bigger storyline might have been the Honu's return to guessing game tactics that had been employed earlier in the season but had been temporarily suspended last week for the top ten matchup with Ramusok Capital. After the one point victory over the Dragons allowed South Seas University to get back to football, it appeared that the Honu had been content to move on from the early season jersey strategy. Instead, the Honu introduced yet another wrinkle to the complicated set of maneuvers as they battled Palm View University on the road.

This next iteration in the strategy saw the Honu players once again switch from the numbers that they had been assigned at the beginning of the season. Once again, the players had removed their names from the backs of their jerseys so that Palm View University would gain no additional footing. Once again, the Honu doubled up on several of the jersy numbers, choreographing an on-field dance so that two of the same numbered jersey did not appear at the same time. And on Saturday, the next evolution appeared at Dolphin Stadium.

With a small tent erected on the South Seas University sidelines, Coach Goose Carneghy ushered players inside whenver they came off of the field, out of sight from the opposing sideline and those in the stadium. Inside, several players had gathered to be given a quick jersey switcheroo, taking on a new number before gradually being released back to the sidelines in random order so as to maintain their new secret identity. With a new number in place, the players then continued to take the field in various formations. With multiple doubled numbers coupled with in-game jersey number switches, confusion abounded to all who were in the stadium not privy to flow chart on the Honu sideline.

Current NSCF rules regarding jerseys indicate that a player may change jersey number during the game as needed to allow for a positional change. Each player who has switched a number mid game must report to the referee, who then announces that the number change has occurred.

Under the Honu system employed Saturday, however, players reported to the referee on each and every substitution; given the multiplicity of numbers already doubled or tripled on the roster, it soon became an exercise one might have found within the University calculus department just to keep up with the changes. At its most basic parts, it had become nearly impossible for those in the media to tell players apart from one another, and it is assumed this confusion carried over to the Palm View sideline as well.

After the Honu last week gave away all of the typical identifying information to Ramusok Capital, it appears that behind the scenes what was truly happening was the team buying a bit of time for newly appointed Special Coordinator Ceslo Archarngel to choreograph each moving part as if it were a complex Broadway dance show. With the pressure removed from Archangel for the Ramusok game, an additional week of preparation allowed a schematic change on a grand scale.

The Honu needed every advantage they could get to escape Palm View with a one point victory. While South Seas University had been able to dominate this particular team in the second week of the season, Dolphin Stadium saw a much more closely contested game on Saturday. The added on-field confusion has led some in the media to speculate that the Honu had performed the proverbial shooting of their own foot, essentially confusing themselves in the process of trying to disillusion the Dolphins. Others have speculated that, coming off of an energetic win against previously #1 ranked Ramusok Capital, the Honu had simply overlooked the Dolphins as they prepared for next weeks tilt against Stoneshore College.

Whether the difficult win came as result to either of these postulations, or whether the Dolphins were simply better prepared this go around, South Seas University escaped the Dolphin's grasp, securing a regular season sweep of Palm View University, meanwhile moving squarely into the discussion for a possible Horizon Conference title in just South Seas University's second season playing in the NSCF. Currently, that honor would be awarded to Stoneshore College, who had relatively little difficulty in their own defeat of Ramusok Capital on Saturday.

The fate of the NSCF 12 season may come down to Saturday's tilt at The Plumeria Garden against Stoneshore, which has been flexed into the primetime slot since both teams figure to be ranked in Sporting World's top ten rankings. It is possible that when the rankings come out later in the week that this showdown features two top five teams vying for the inside track for not only the Horizon Conference but also a premier spot in the NSCF playoff race.

With the recent strategic moves compiled by Carneghy and the Honu, one thing appears certain for Saturday night's game: there will be no certainties when the on-field actions commence. Still, if Goose Carneghy has taught us anything this season, it is that it is certain to entertain and make for must see TV.

For fans of the South Seas University football program, one can also hope that it is must see football as well.

Azorian Sports Network Report

SMU head coach Luiz Melo addresses the media during his postgame press conference following the Lion's game against Port Salem.

LM- "That was a real good win for our football team. I’m really proud of the way the guys played. We played 60 minutes, which you have to do against Port Salem. They’re tough. They make you work for everything. But I thought our guys stepped up, made some big plays, especially in the second half, in the fourth quarter, when we needed to. All the credit has to go to the players. They worked hard for this one, had a good week of practice, and played hard today. It’s good to win. We have a long way to go. Looking forward to taking a little time off this week, but we’ll be back at it before we know it, but it’s good to win here."

Question- "Can you talk about the defensive approach that you took, playing a lot of five defensive backs?"

LM- "I thought that overall we played competitively on defense. We had some bad plays out there: a couple of long pass interferences, gave up a 70-yard touchdown on check down, a couple of third down conversions that they made. I think we can do a better job of coaching, getting some of those things straightened out, but the players played hard and I thought the match ups we had we thought were the best ones for this game and, for the most part, I think the players played competitively with them. We had a couple of good pass rushes at the end, and that was obviously a key thing for us."

Question- "Did you see something in the fourth quarter that opened it up for you on the last two drives?"

LM- "We went to the no huddle. We tried to pick up the pace a little bit and we felt like we could get into a little quicker tempo. It seemed like slowing the game down earlier in the game was not working to our advantage. We thought we’d try to pick up the tempo and see if we could gain an advantage on that. So that’s what we tried to do."

Question- "Can you talk about Joel Carreira’s interceptions?"

LM- "They made a good play on the one before the half. Port Salem have a lot of good football players that make some good plays too. I’m sure Joel would like to have those back, but they are a good defensive football team. They can rush the passer. They can cover. They play the run pretty good. Overall I think Joel's performance was good enough to get us the win."

Question- "How do you feel about being one of a very few undefeated teams and all the hype?"

LM- "I don’t care about all that. Really. It was a football game against Port Salem. That’s all it was. The other games don’t mean anything to this point. The ones ahead of them don’t mean anything. It’s one game. It was a good, competitive football game. Our guys made a few more plays and that’s why we won. That’s what the significance of this game is to me. I’m happy for the players. I think they deserved it and they played hard."

Northern gets 22-3 victory over Kanza University; sets up showdown with St.Augustinus to win the Celestia Conference outright

Image
Marching band at a pep rally before the game against St.Augustinus

HERZEGOVINA CITY- Northern Moravica, pulling off their 6th game of the season without allowing a touchdown, pulled off a 22-3 road win against Kanza University. They are still breaking records in the scoring defense category, and they, at 7-1, have moved alone into 1st place in the Celestia Conference with two games remaining. After some quarterback controversy following their last game, Slawomir Kovach seemed to solidify his spot as the starting quarterback, playing turnover-free football the entire game, even though he did not throw a touchdown and he had just 14 pass attempts throughout the entire game.

Dvorak had two running touchdowns, while Free Safety Branislav Burian had a pick-6, and Northern Moravica converted a two-point conversion early against Kanza University to pull off this victory. The University of St.Augustinus, however, lost their game 10-0 on the road to Army, whom many call the other strong team in this conference. This put them at 6-2, while Northern Moravica is 7-1 and Army is 5-3, all teams with two games left to play. Northern is left remaining with a home game against St.Augustinus, and then has to travel to Army to finish the regular season. If Northern Moravica defeats St.Augustinus however, they will win the conference championship outright in their first season in the NSCF, and also clinch an automatic playoff berth.

This upcoming home game against St.Augustinus is their biggest game of the season. Yes, they still have an undefeated Navy yet to play at home, and Horace Browning will make his return in 3 weeks to Stoneshore College against that top-5 team, but a victory here will put them automatically into the postseason, and allow them to celebrate a conference championship on their home field, right here in Herzegovina City. What will have to happen however, to avoid a repeat of their disastrous trip to St.Augustinus, is that the offense will have to play a much, much cleaner game than they did the first time.

Northern's only loss of the season was a road loss at St.Augustinus, where they lost 17-3. The reason they lost, primarily, was because they lost the turnover battle, and lost the turnover battle big time. Kovach threw 3 interceptions, and that was in addition to two lost fumbles by teammates. Northern Moravica was giving the ball away to a team that was, at the time, the best team in the entire conference and one of the best, if not the best, team in the entire NSCF. Northern needs to focus on the running game, and allow their defense to do its thing. They have the best defense in college football, and if they play a possession game and keep their defense fresh, and stop cutting drives short with turnovers and interceptions, they have as good of a chance as any to go out and win tomorrow night, at home, and clinch their first Celestia Conference championship in front of their home fans.

33-10 blowout victory for Northern Moravica earns them outright Celestia Conference Championship; Automatic playoff berth

Image
Players celebrate with the Celestia Conference Championship Trophy

HERZEGOVINA CITY- The short-lived quarterback controversy is, indeed, over. Quarterback Slawomir Kovach threw for 3 touchdown passes and no interceptions, and Dvorak added another touchdown on the ground as Northern Moravica achieved its biggest victory of the season, winning 33-10, and emphatically clinched the Celestia Conference championship on its home field against St.Augustinus. Celebrations went deep into the night, as reverberations were felt all around the college football world due to the magnitude of their achievement. Northern Moravica, a newcomer to the NSCF, has come and taken the Celestia conference and the college football world by storm, as they have won 8 out of 9 games and have won the conference with one game to go. Not only that, but Northern Moravica is being increasingly seen as a threat to win the NSCF championship. But first, the game at hand.

The game was all Northern Moravica, from beginning to end. The sellout crowd was the largest of the season, and the largest since Athletic Director Patras' senior season, as they fit 57,122 into the stadium. They have announced that they will use the expanded seating for their blackout game against the Naval Academy, as that will likely be between two top 10 games in Northern and the Naval Academy, and for their playoff games, for obvious reasons. The sea of purple last night was going crazy for the entire day, with tailgates going on since sunrise and a raucous energy from the crowd. Northern's football fans were excited, and they were treated to their team's best offensive performance of the season.

The first quarter started with Northern deferring, and both teams exchanging 3 & outs to open the game. After Northern's defense forced a second consecutive punt, Northern's offense went to work. Slawomir Kovach engineered a quick scoring drive, helped by starting field position at his own 43 yard line. On this drive, he went 3/3 for 57 yards, ending the 3 play drive with a 15 yard strike to Vena Resnick to give Northern a 7-0 lead to start the game. Kovach was extremely motivated, as it was his first touchdown pass since week 3. His excitement after throwing the touchdown pass, which included a shoulder bump with the backup quarterback, showed exactly how much energy Northern Moravica was bringing to this game. They were here to win, and their offense was ready to shed its label as the weak link of this team.

In the 2nd quarter, there was a more traditional Northern Moravica drive. Starting the drive at their own 13 yard line, Kovach went 5/7 for 46 yards, as they had a 16 play, 87 yard drive where they went 4/4 on third down and took 6:33 off of the clock, and ended the drive with a 6 yard touchdown run for Dvorak on 1st & goal to give Northern a 14-0 lead in the second quarter. Unlike the last game against St.Augustinus, where frustrating turnovers seemed to stall every single drive and where Northern's offense couldn't get anything going, it seemed as if this offense was clicking on all cylinders. They were moving forward with precision, moving with purpose, and being efficient against the Priests. St.Augustinus had an effective 2 minute drill to cap off the end of the 1st half, as they drilled a 44 yarder as time expired to go into the break with Northern up 14-3.

Northern was able to get three first downs on the opening drive of the 2nd half, but a 3rd down holding penalty forced them to punt. They were able to pin St.Augustinus down at their own 3 yard line, and a first down running play only barely avoided a safety, as a two yard loss gave them a 2nd and 12 at their own 1 yard line. The student section was causing noise problems behind them, and there was no way that Northern was going to be denied on this drive. On 2nd and 12, they dropped back to pass, and star defensive end Momir Litvinov sacked the quarterback in the end zone to achieve a safety for Northern Moravica. The crowd went wild, and they achieved a 16-3 lead. They used that momentum right away, with the ensuing punt putting Northern at the 50 yard line. Slawomir Kovach then lined up and threw a 50 yard bomb to Zawisza Jablonski, as Northern was able to extend their lead to 23-3 lead with just over 10 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. Northern was dominating this game, and St.Augustinus seemed to have no answers to Northern.

St.Augustinus was able to show on the ensuing drive however, why they were preseason favorites to win this conference. They were able to engineer a quick scoring drive, and just 4 plays later, the game was 23-10. St.Augustinus showed that they were not out of it, and they knew they needed a stop to keep going. They got that stop, and momentum seemed to shift heavily towards their opponents. However, an interception by Jasenko Horny that led to a Northern field goal killed all St.Augustinus hopes at a comeback. They were not going to be able to comeback against this Northern team, on this day, and it showed. Northern got one more touchdown in the 4th quarter, and when the clock ran to triples zeroes at the end of the 4th quarter, they knew they were champions. They gave the gatorade shower to Head Coach Horace Browning, and they were more than ready to celebrate.

While Herzegovina City will be partying into the night, Head Coach Browning had great words for the crowd. He said that they would celebrate their conference championship, as it was something that took a lot of energy to earn. He said that he had a special team and was at a special school, and that they should cherish this championship. He also said that the team would go back to work on Monday, as the season was still going on, and their #1 goal had not been accomplished, which was to win an NSCF title.

The team has 4 games left, which will be very important in determining things like playoff seeding. They have one conference game left, as they travel to the Army Academy in week 10. Then, in week 11, they travel to defending NSCF champions Stoneshore College, which is where Horace Browning was defensive coordinator for the last 3 seasons. In week 12, they will host Karl Marx University, who has slipped after a solid beginning to the season, and then in week 13, on senior night, they will host the Naval Academy, who is highly regarded as one of the best teams in the NSCF, and they have only just had their first loss of the season here in week 9.

Civilized Warfare: A Chess Game Q&A with Football Coach Silas Carneghy
Story by Alexander Santos

[The following story appeared as a feature article in Island Life Magazine; an abridged version is reprinted here with permission, as a courtesy to our readers-Ed.]

"You know, you take control of your game in the beginning, or your game takes control of you in the end," the voice on the other side of table stated calmly.

The voice was that of Silas Carneghy, head coach of the South Seas University football program. I had reached out to Carneghy one week prior, asking for an exclusive interview with the coach who had placed the NSCF in a scramble with his unconventional style, both on and off the field. Much like his tactics with the Honu football team, he had obliged—on his own terms. He invited me to a 'friendly' game of chess as a medium to discussing the recent media buzz regarding his team which had taken the NSCF by storm.

"So," I started, unsure of how to proceed with the interview. "Your team has made quite a few headlines of recent. What do you attribute that to?"

Carneghy slid his dark bishop two squares. "Civilized warfare," he replied. "We engage in civilized warfare at the highest level of the college football ranks, and our warfare looks a little different than everybody else's. I suppose people want to see the new thing, to see how it turns out. But we already know how it turns out, don't we?"

"Well, right now, it appears that it has turned out to people questioning your tactics. Honestly, are they just a show?"

"You know what I find interesting?" Carneghy replied, knight in hand and seemingly ignoring the question at hand. "For years in the middle ages, the Italian opening was considered a novelty, a new way of attacking an old system of beliefs. And it worked for a while—it worked great for a while. Opponents didn't know how to defend it or where to attack. And yet, lines that were thought to lose are now known to draw; lines that once led to a draw can now be won. People learned to play against the Italian opening; this too shall pass."

"Some of the more traditional coaches in the NSCF have called you out for making a mockery of the game with your jersey strategy. How would you respond to their criticism?"

Advancing a pawn, Carneghy continued. "In a world where everything is in flux, creativity and adaptability are king. And as we know, the side who has the king left standing at the end of the game wins."

"You've got a number of very talented players on your team. How has the media attention surrounding the jerseys played into maximizing their potential?"

Again, the coach went back to the chess board. "We started with 16 pieces apiece. Eight pawns, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, one queen, and one king. But they are all bunched up at one end of the board when the game begins. If you want to win the game, you've got to put your moving pieces in play."

I could take a hint. This interview was going to be framed along Carneghy's lines. Aggressively moving my queen up five squares, I continued. "Well, wouldn't you want to put your strongest pieces in position to make the biggest impact? Guys like Ezra Talbot, Satchel King, Roosevelt Calderon....By the way, that makes check."

Carneghy didn't even bother to respond to the question at hand, instead retorting with an interesting statement of his own. "You know, if you treat her like a two dollar whore, then don't be surprised when she gets screwed." Advancing a pawn, he kept my queen off of his king's file.

"Perhaps, then, you could give me a little bit of insight toward your football strategy."

With a shrug, the Honu coach calmly responded. "My strategy is simple. I always try to kill the opponents king."

"Big games coming up against Utica, Ceneisis Naval, and Army. You've certainly not shied away from scheduling tough games; you've also lost a number of games to tough opponents. Your non-conference schedule last year almost kept you out of the playoffs..."

Once again, Carneghy's affect remained calm, too calm. It was a side of him I had not seen before. "Kasperov did not become a grand master by playing ol' Joe Swanson his mechanic."

"Some might call that wise; some might say it exposes you as weak." I moved my queen, capturing one of his knights. "Check."

His response was simple. "Another way...always another way. Sometimes you make sacrifices to get where you want to be." With his other knight, he moved out of check, capturing one of my rooks at the same time.

Our interview continued, I continuing to ask pointed questions regarding the team and its performance, and he continuing to move the answers back towards the battle on the chessboard. With each response, he made a move on the board. After a handful of moves, I found it difficult to keep up with not only where he was headed in his replies but also where he was headed with our own civilized warfare. He seemed to move pieces with no intent, splaying out pieces and moving them wherever his whim might fancy. For somebody such as myself, having played numerous games of chess and considering my skills to be above par, it seemed like Carneghy had no idea what he was doing. At one point, I even questioned one of his "strategic" moves. "Are you sure you want to move there?"

He appeared resolute, unwavering from his move. "I came to play a game. I might lose, but I came to play a game."

"Let's get to the heart of the matter," I continued, noting an opportune moment in the interview and in our game. "The Honu backtracked into the playoffs last year, and despite some improvements this season, the team has still been unable to make the push in beating teams like Stoneshore. Is this team outmatched in the Horizon conference and in the NSCF?" And sliding my own rook on its horizontal file, I added "Check."

"The master doesn't beat you," Carneghy replied, sliding his bishop and removing himself from check. "He merely watches and lets you beat yourself...and you cooperate fully with him."

"Well, in that case," I pressed in, "It seems the Honu have been rather cooperative so far with some of the more established teams. Check."

"Never in one night was a grandmaster made. One move at a time, one game at a time."

At this point Carneghy was on the run; I had played the man at his own game, and he had nowhere to retreat. I could see checkmate in two moves. And so with one more question, I moved in for the kill. "So where does this go from here? Is there an NSCF championship in this team's future?" Emphatically, I added one last "check" to let Carneghy know his time was up.

"An excellent question indeed," he nodded. "Where does this go?" And then he slid his bishop one last time, calmly announcing his own "Checkmate."

In disbelief I looked at the chessboard. In fact, there my king stood, no legal moves remaining. As I had moved in for the kill, Carneghy had somehow pinned me in without my realization.

Carneghy continued. "Sometimes, people focus on the moves and forget to focus on the game."
---------------------------------------------------------

I learned quite a bit about that man and his football strategy that day, even though we talked very little X's and O's. I learned this is a man who knows how to look ahead, and is brave enough to try an unconventional strategy even if it means a possibility of defeat. I came to interview a man and press in on tough issues, and instead I met a man unconcerned with what everybody else is doing. I met a man who is unashamed at putting his pieces in play and letting the chips fall where they may. And, above all, I learned that when you come to play the master, if you aren't prepared for the answers then don't ask the questions.

Message Sender: Solomon Abercrombie, Events Booking Director, The Plumeria Garden
Delivery to: Esteemed Leadership of the NationStates College Football Committee
Subject: Bid Proposal for Bowl Game to be Hosted at the Plumeria Garden

Bid to Host Continued NSCF Bowl Game: The Lei Bowl

Dear sirs and madams:

The Plumeria Garden, the largest stadium of any notoriety within the South Seas Islands, respectfully submits a bid for an NSCF bowl game to be named The Lei Bowl and sponsored by Liquid Sunshine. NSCF fans may already be familiar with the venue itself, as it is the home stadium for the South Seas University Honu, as well as having successfully hosted a bowl series of the same name in NSCF 11. What the casual observer may not realize is that The Plumeria Garden is a multi-sport semi-outdoor facility. The important piece for this bowl bid, however, is its ability to host gridiron football games.

With a total capacity of 60,280 fans, The Plumeria Garden may not have the sheer size of other stadia in the NSCF world. But what it lacks in grandstand size it makes up for in delightful setting. Inside the stadium, a number of luxurious sky suites, media boxes, and hotel rooms are available for VIPs, while the casual fan will hope to be close to the action as the cerebral crowds raise the decibel level close to 140. This atmosphere of true fan hysteria is one not to be missed, and one which will make for a fun and memorable backdrop to commemorating a fine football season. Teams themselves will be placed on the sidelines "between the hedges" where the namesake plumeria flowers grow abundantly, and the natural grass field will be a welcome sight to teams competing. With its location on Mosaic Bay, The Plumeria Garden itself offers an amazing setting, with a wealth of world food items available from the kitchen bays. Wonderfully designed craft brews are accessible, as are the exotic flavored sodas from South Seas Soda Company.

Image
Located in Mosaic, Costa Aluria, The Plumeria Garden offers a wealth of access to additional acitivities for those fans looking to make a true holiday out of the occassion. While this capital city of our islands located in the Mare Ferum of Astyria boasts only a population of just over 160,000 year round residents, the city is ever abuzz with the glow of tourists. Costa Aluria as a whole is rated well within the top 1% of all NationStates locales when it comes to overall tourism, and as the site of the largest international airport in these islands (Mosaic International), Mosaic certainly has its share of the activity. Here guests will find all the modern conveniences of a capital city, and a wealth of lodging alternatives await, from boutique hotels, typical skyrise hotels, and, in the near vicinity, resort complexes including the famous Costa Alurian overwater bungalows.

Once outside the city, a pristine environment begs to be explored; guests can immerse themselves in land based and water based activities. With the tropical year-round climate, travelers to Costa Aluria will have options of hiking and ziplining through the forest, or exploring the volcanic mountains and trails by ATV, helicopter, small plane, or even hot air balloon. Beach activities will no doubt lure sunbathers, while snorkeling, scuba diving, catamaran tours, surfing, and all other types of water activities abound.

Perhaps the biggest draw of the South Seas Islands, however, is the cultural experience that guests will have while here. The Polynesian heritage of these islands will offer guests a wide variety of experiences that introduce them to the island style life as well as the relaxing cadence of island time. Guests might wish to learn to dance the hula, take in a luau on the beach, paddle an outrigger canoe, or marvel at the wonders of our skilled fire-knife dancers. And of course there is the tradition of the lei, the namesake for our proposed bowl game. With just two games remaining in Utica's regular season, it doesn't look likely that freshman runningback LeDallas de Jeruselem will even come close to the lofty all-purpose yardage totals of his predecessors -- Rashad Jackson's 1,843 yard record, and Isaac Sawyer's admirable 1,798 from two years ago -- but he has certainly impressed. The Quebecois has accumulated an impressive 1,256 yards from scrimmage in his debut NSCF season with the Tigers, and will be the workhorse upon which head coach Anthony Channa and offensive co-ordinator Alex Hardison place much of the team's scoring burden in the playoffs.

"I'm kind of flattered," reveals de Jeruselem. "It's been tough, but I have a lot of support here and it's been great stepping out onto the field knowing thousands of fans are there to back you." LeDallas is cagey when questioned about Utica's yardage records, pointing out that it's "too early to be thinking about that." Even the revelation that Jackson set the record in his own freshman year can't persuade the big man to make the seemingly obvious comparison. "We're different players, really. He had a better first step, I'm better at forcing gaps. It's odd to compare us in some ways, and I don't see it. But I understand that every Utica runningback will be compared to [Jackson], he's a legend, after all."

After securing the Woodlands conference championship with an emphatic 44-10 victory in The Pit, you'd be forgiven for thinking the Tigers might have eased up a little in their final road game of in-conference play, against Queen's, but Channa laughed at the idea. "They won't admit it, but these guys want to set records. They want the stats to back up what people are saying about them." The first year head coach told us. "You know, it's been rough, losing the championship game a couple years ago with the best team we'd had in six years. This team is just as good, so they know there's a lot of pressure on them to deliver."

Though they currently sit in the number two slot on the playoff seeding list, with just two non-conference games scheduled -- both in The Pit; unusual for Utica -- against strong sides in South Seas and St Augustinus, the Tigers will be hoping for positive results to help cement a high seed. "Home advantage is a big deal." Conceded Channa. "We're a lot stronger at home, a lot harder to beat, a lot harder to break down. So we want to get home advantage for as long as possible, better chances. It all matters."

Starting quarterback Brendon Hogan echoed the coach's words, pointing out that "the margins are tiny between elite teams, so home advantage could be the factor that swings any game. We're confident we can win away from home too, but if we can earn the right to stay in The Pit for both games, why wouldn't we want to try and do that?"

First, the Tigers will welcome the South Seas Honu, who have caused a stir with their confusing jersey switching tactic this season. "We're not too worried about their tricks." Utica defensive co-ordinator Lu'bo Rinaso'lu said confidently. "If our guys are paying attention, and doing their jobs like we worked on in training, it's not an issue." This prompted further questioning, though, centred on the fact that the Honu arguably play in the strongest conference of NSCF at the moment, facing both of the last two champion programs in the league. If they struggled with this gambit, why should Utica be so confident? "Because we're better." Rinaso'lu replied, matter-of-factly. There were no arguments.

A monster 168 yard game for Utica's monster runningback LeDallas de Jeruselem keeps the Tigers' progressing on their quest for a third NSCF Championship, and answers the few remaining critics he has left. "I don't really listen to them," LeDallas admitted, "I just focus on what my coaches tell me. When people doubt you, they'll find ways to downplay anything you achieve. I wasn't far off the single game rushing record tonight, but the people who doubt me will probably say 'but he didn't get any touchdowns' or something like that. It's pointless." Utica's Quebecois freshman is a strong contender for Utica's player of the season, and possibly the Most Outstanding Player award for NSCF this season. Head coach Anthony Channa is delighted with his progress, pointing out that "he gets up to speed pretty quickly for a guy as tall as he is", an improvement credited to Ishmael Johnson primarily.

Utica controlled the game against the Honu for the most part, backing up the claims of their defensive co-ordinator Lu'bo Rinaso'lu -- that they are "better" than the opposition the Honu have beaten this season. The Honu started with the ball, but in the hostile environment of The Pit, they seemed to struggle to get anything going, with Keenan Gibson -- performing single man coverage on Moses Gervaise -- swatting away two pass attempts contemptuously in the opening drive. Once the Tigers had the ball, they seemed unstoppable. Two first quarter touchdowns on their first two possessions appeared to set the tone for the remainder of the game.

The offensive line repeatedly created gaps big enough for even the behemoth de Jeruselem to get through, and once he did, he made sure the Honu paid for their errors. His first three carries alone tallied a total of 25 yards, assuring the visitors that the threat he posed was very real. As if to underline that threat, on the next play Brendon Hogan faked a hand off and ripped a pass off short right to Carter Hodge, who was finally stopped for a gain of 20 yards. Just like that, the Tigers had moved within field goal range. When De'roy Hardison got hands on the ball in the end zone, it was hard to be surprised.

The Honu tried a different approach on their next possession, seemingly avoiding Keenan Gibson, but Andre Hawkins came out of nowhere to swat away an attempt through the middle twice in a row. As if to hammer home the point, Hilario Marquez delivered a monstrous hit on Ezra Talbot on third and ten. Perhaps wisely, a punt came next. Utica however, continued their relentless assault on their second possession, again mixing the run and the pass effectively. Nine plays later, the home side led 14-0.

That disastrous start for South Seas University was not indicative of the limit of their ability, however, and in the second quarter, they managed to get points on the board when Talbot finally managed to connect with Gervaise on a deep ball through the middle. Gibson apparently bamboozled when faced with two runners after a defensive misread, it seemed. That touchdown seemed to buoy the visitors somewhat, but Utica's dominant running game was able to eat up the remaining time in the half to go in thirteen points ahead at the break.

The second half of the game saw the Honu turn it up, sacking Brendon Hogan and grinding out small gains running the ball, before nailing a 39 yard field goal to reduce the lead to ten. Meanwhile, Hogan started to see difficulties finding his receivers, forcing a sort of reliance on de Jeruselem. Utica were content to slug it out in the trenches, however, and the game degenerated into a back and forth ground struggle, with the occasional field goal. As the game wore on, however, the Honu struggled more, and when the rush began yielding less and less success -- thanks to a fired up, and very quick, Utica defense stuffing the run seemingly as soon as the carrier passed the line of scrimmage -- a return to the pass was inevitable. Channa and Ribaso'lu had apparently prepared for this, though, and Gervaise found it hard to breakaway and find separation.

Next up for Utica will be against St Augustinus on non-conference day three, meaning the Tigers have a day of rest next week. Channa has mixed feelings about that free week, though. "It's great to be in a position where we get an extra day of rest and it won't affect our chances of making the playoffs, but at the same time, I almost feel like we want to keep our momentum going. A break, especially at such a crucial time in the season could be a disadvantage, because it's an interruption." The Utica head coach explained. Like Utica, St Augustinus have a former NSCF champion program, and it was recent enough that it is creating a bit of a buzz on campus in Tubriss. "You want to play against top tier opposition, it's the best way to really test yourself, so I'm looking forward to it. Some of those guys were in that championship winning side a few years ago, I think. It's not every week, or even every season, you get to play against guys who have won championships." Starting quarterback Brendon Hogan said.

The man of the hour, though, had little to say on the matter. "It's another game. They'll be on guard after tonight, so I'll have a tough one. Nice test maybe. We'll see." LeDallas de Jeruselem half-shrugged when asked. Perhaps he's saving his real excitement for the playoffs themselves.
