Banija pulls off 13-7 upset of Army; Improves to 4-1 and back into first place in the Celestia Conference

Fullback Rayko Jankovic celebrates his 12 yard go-ahead touchdown run in the 4th quarter against Army

HERZEGOVINA CITY- Northern Moravica, reeling after their 5 turnover loss on the road against St.Augustinus, was able to turn everything around at home and pull off the 13-7 upset of Army. Led once again by their defense, who only allowed one turnover and once again won the turnover battle(1-0), Northern was able to use the energy of home field and their stifling defense to claim a 13-7 victory over the Army Academy, and improve to 4-1 on the season and move back into a statistical tie for 1st place, after St.Augustinus followed its two big wins against Army and Northern Moravica by dropping an overtime game against cellar-dwellar Lone Wolf University, which dropped them from #1 to #8 in the rankings, just one spot ahead of Northern Moravica, who is ranked #9. Interestingly enough, Army, who is 3-2 and has lost to both St.Augustinus and Northern Moravica on the road, who are both 4-1 respectively, is ranked ahead of both schools ranked 5th in all of NSCF.

This game was always going to be a defensive slugfest, and the first quarter seemed to prove that. In the 1st quarter alone, each team started the game with 3 3 & outs, so that the first first down of the game was not gained until the 1st play of the second quarter, when fullback Rayko Jankovic had a 3 yard gain on 3rd & 1. The first half continued the way of the 1st quarter in terms of it being a defensive slugfest, as the teams essentially traded punts for the rest of the half, and went into the locker rooms at 0-0. In the 1st half, Kovach was 3-9 for 21 yards, while Army's quarterback matched him, going 1 for 5 in the first half for 13 yards. Both teams, led by top 5 scoring defenses(Northern tied for first and Army tied for 3rd), were playing best at their strength, and it was clear that the team with an offense that could make the adjustments would prevail.

Northern's only touchdown was set up by the game's only turnover. On a 3rd down & 3, on the opening drive of the 3rd quarter on their own 28 yard line, Fabian Isaksson rolled right and threw directly to Dragutin Tomikj, the senior cornerback and the captain & leader of this Northern defense. He returned the interception 25 yards to Army's 16 yard line. After a 1 yard run on a reverse by Vena Resnick, and then an 8 yard screen pass to the same player, they were faced with a 3rd & 1 from Army's 7, and an opportunity to get the game's first points. They did a fullback dive up the middle, and Jayko Rankovic ran untouched past the yellow line all the way to the end zone for 6 points, and allowed Northern Moravica to take a 7-0 lead.

Army Academy's offense seemed to wake up after their turnover, and Northern Moravica held onto their lead for all of 53 seconds of game time. On a 2nd down from their own 22 yard line, Isaksson ran an option play to perfection, and junior halfback Jiri Kurka took a pitch 78 yards to the house, and the game was all square at 7-7 once again. Northern's response was one of resiliency, and one of strong belief that they could accomplish the impossible. Slawomir Kovach went 5-6 on the following drive for 63 yards, and Northern ended up making a chip shot 24 yard field goal, to take a 10-7 lead, one that they would take into the 4th quarter.

The Northern Moravica defense, even without forcing turnovers, was able to visibly frustrate the offense of the Army Academy. They love to run the football, and Northern was playing strong safety Jasenko Horny up in the box for the entire game, and besides the one big touchdown run, Army could not move the ball down the field. With 7 minutes left, Northern Moravica got the ball at their own 18 yard line, and Slawomir Kovach led probably the best non-touchdown ending drive he has ever had. He made the right adjustments, and his side when 4/5 on third down on that drive, and they kicked a 29 yarder with 2:06 left in the 4th quarter.

They hadn't been able to move the ball all game, and a team that plays the T-Formation is not built for the comeback. After completing their first two passes, both for 12 yards and first downs, they proceeded to throw 4 incomplete passes in a row, with the last being knocked down by Jasenko Horny. This allowed Northern's quarterback to take a knee, and the fans went crazy with their victory over Army, though many were harshly critical when Monday rolled around and they were still behind Army in the standings.

This was a big win for Northern Moravica, and probably the biggest win of the season so far for Horace Browning Jr. They had beaten the three bottom teams in the conference, but the question was whether if he could win the big game. He did it ugly, he did it in front of his fans, and he did it against what is still a top-5 team in the entire NSCF. Now, they have to follow it up with a tricky trip to Lone Wolf University, who may be in last place but just landed a massive upset against the former undefeated, NSCF #1 St.Augustinus, and now have to be filling with confidence. That'll be a tough one, but if the players stay focused, they should be able to pull a victory out of their next road game.

Honu Double Down on Numbers Roulette in Rout of Galturin
Story by Abraham Shepherd

Kaboomlandia—The South Seas University Honu notched another important win in the NSCF Saturday as they defeated the University of Galturin Broncos. The 49-29 victory placed the Honu squarely in second place for the entire field in terms of points scored on the season. Fellow Horizon Conferencemates Ramusok Capital lead the pack, having continued to light up the scoreboard since the first game against the Honu.

With the win, one more number came into play for South Seas University. Sporting World has moved the Honu into the #10 ranking, almost certainly noting the number of points the team has put onto the board this season. Still, the question remains; are the pinball-arcade numbers enough to propel the Honu into the playoffs, despite their inability to get over the proverbial hump with the tougher teams such as Ramusok Capital?

As Honu fans and opponents have learned over the last few weeks, numbers have been an ongoing subject as the team tries to get back to the playoffs—specifically jersey numbers. The saga began last month against Palm View University as the Honu removed their individual names from the back of the jersey; it continued last week when the Honu switched their numbers prior to the game with Campbell State. And, once again, the numbers have taken center stage for the South Seas University football program.

Facing Galturin, the Honu once again marched onto the field without individual names, and once again the players switched their assigned numbers prior to the game. Coach Goose Carneghy took it one step further, however, for the game against the winless Broncos. The team huddled closely together as they initially took the field during the team introduction, concealing the fact for some time that several members of the team were sporting the exact same jersey number for this week's tilt.

NSCF jersey rules allow for two or more players from one team to wear the same number during the same game, so long as the two players are not on the field at the same time. Typically, this has been the result of such large rosters that, coupled with team rules on which positions may wear what numbers, has potential to utilize more than every elligible number. Most often, this has looked like an offensive player and a defensive player wearing the same number, as they would not be on the field at the same time. Further uses have been for a starting player and another player who may be quite a bit lower on the depth chart.

Still, the ambiguity in the rule allowed the Honu to take full advantage of Galturin's ill-preparation. With mutliple players on both sides of the ball sporting the same numbers, the Honu continued to substitute liberally as they had last week against Campbell State. The caveat this week was that the Honu made it impossible for anybody in the stadium to keep track of which player was whom based solely on their jersey number.

Carneghy defended the tactic after the game. "It was really about making Galturin play honest," Carneghy stated. "A lot of teams go into their preparations looking to shut down a few players. Well this isn't about individual personnel. This is about your team being prepared for my team. And we think we have an advantage when we get to truly mix and match our personnel to make your team prepare for anything."

The move prompted the promotion of assistant coach Ceslo Archangel to a spot being dubbed simply as "Special Coordinator." It appears Archangel will have the difficult task of managing the personnel logistics associated with such a cluster of similar numbers as it pertains to on-field personnel on any given play. With the number of moving pieces that Carneghy has employed over the past two games, it should be no easy task moving forward.

For this week, at least, it was a task that changed how South Seas University played. While last week's confusion against Campbell State led to the Honu getting typically lesser-utilzed players the ball, this week's added puzzlement allowed the team to get their major playmakers involved early and often. Quarterback Ezra Talbot and wide receiver Satchel King connected for three touchdowns, and Talbot tossed another two in the direction of tight end Levi Savage. Talbot further scored an additional rushing touchdown on a 60 yard sprint down the sidelines. The Honu defense benefitted from the new-look scheme as well, capitalizing on five Bronco turnovers including a second quarter interception house call by cornerback Jovante James.

The number roulette system has been met with a flurry of critics in the media. Some have even gone on to say this is nothing more than an attention grabbing gimmick. Still, Carneghy remained resolute in defending the tactic in the post-game presser. "This is about one thing, and one thing only. When we lost to Ramusok, it was about team unity. Simply put, we weren't disciplined enough to take on the Dragons. And that is exactly what this does to other teams. The disciplined teams will be able to prepare for any situation that might arise on the field; and if your team isn't disciplined, well it might be a long afternoon."

Carneghy will certainly get his chance to prove how the tactic might fare against a disciplined team, and sooner rather than later. Ramusok Capital comes into The Plumeria Garden for a primetime showdown on Saturday night, fresh off of their own 36-20 victory over Palm View University and subsequent return to Sporting World's #1 ranking. The clash of top ten teams begins at 7:35 PM Costa Alurian time and is certain to draw a packed parking lot tailgate scene. As one of the must see games for matchday six, the international eyes of the NSCF fans will undoubtedly be tuned to what new wrinkle Carneghy might introduce. With all eyes focused squarely on The Plumeria Garden, it remains to be seen whether Carneghy's Honu are finally able to vanquish the Dragons.

Payday, Part Eighteen

General's View Hills
5 miles outside Releinthi, Abanhfleft

An awkward silence had settled inside the Maserati as Allison drove herself, Alexandra, Destiny, one billion dollars' worth of gold, and Fructuoso Arellano to a place outside the Releinthi city limits known as the General's View Hills due to a legend that this was where General Juan Mariano had observed the Battle of Releinthi during the War of Fleftic Unification, the war that eventually brought about the modern nation-state of Abanhfleft.

An hour earlier, Allison had managed to capture an injured Fruity--who had actually landed on the roof of the Maserati and banged himself up sliding down the roof and into a fire extinguisher--and toss him into the car's trunk despite the many onlookers watching them, and then she had driven back to the Sharpton Hotel, where Alexandra and Destiny were waiting for her with the bags of gold, which they loaded into the back seats before they got into the front seats. Before they set off, however, Alexandra had called Guillermo Huesca once again to tell him that they had both Fruity and the gold.

"Good, good," Huesca had said. "I should be there in Releinthi in about an hour. There's a secluded place in the hills near the city called General's View. Fruity and the gold better be there when I arrive."

Finding the hills had been easy, as Releinthi was a very flat island except for its skyscrapers, and the hills were quite obvious in the northwest of the island. Finding a way to the hills was hard, because only a small number of roads led there, despite the hills being labeled a tourist attraction. Nevertheless, they had managed to find a road that was relatively free of traffic, and they drove their way to the General's View in silence.

Midway through the trip though, the silence had been broken by none other than Fruity himself, who knew exactly what was going to happen to him and was trying to talk his way out of it. "Okay, girls, it looks like we got off on the wrong foot here," he said, his voice muffled from being in the Maserati's trunk. "I didn't really mean to hurt y'all, you know. It's just that I really don't want this fat bastard Huesca to kill me, so if y'all let me out right now then I promise I won't do anything to the three of you."

"Aw, shit, Fruity," Destiny said. "Much as we want to, we can't, because if we let you go, Huesca will kill us and our families."

"Don't worry about the old bastard!" Fruity replied. "Just let me free and give me the gold, and I'll make sure you three girls and your families are protected."

This caused the three girls to look at each other. "I can't do it anymore," Allison said. "We were just supposed rob the First National Bank. Now we're about to deliver the second-most wanted man in Abanhfleft to the most wanted guy... I just can't take it anymore."

"We're not meant to be criminals," Destiny added. "I guess we know that know. Better now than later though, right?"

"Yeah," Alexandra said. "I don't want to be around these people any more than we've already done." Then, raising her voice so Fruity could hear, Alexandra said, "We're really sorry, Fruity, but we just can't do it. We just want this over with."

"You dare refuse the beneficence of Fructuoso Arellano?" Fruity asked. "You dare refuse me!? No one refuses Fructuoso Arellano! Anyone who refuses my benevolent offers will suffer my wrath! Once I get out of here, I will find you and your families, and I will kill you all!" Then, after a moment's silence, Fruity spoke once again, but this time his voice was calmer. "I'm sorry for my outburst, girls, but sometimes i just get emotional. Will you really not let me go?"

"Ignore him," Alexandra whispered, and the others nodded, and they continued their drive to General's View in silence. Finally, they arrived at the place, a simple flat place on top of a hill that gave a commanding view of what was now the city of Releinthi. Two hundred years before, it was claimed that the Battle of Releinthi was fought on the plain below the hills, but that plain had now been consumed by the city, and the most prominent feature that could be seen from General's View now was the Monsanto Stadium, home ground of F.C. Arsenal de Releinthi, one of the most successful football clubs in the country.

A familiar black Hummer was waiting for them at the top of the hill. Guillermo Huesca and his bodyguard Murad were standing outside the Hummer. Allison brought the Maserati to a halt, and the three girls went out. "The gold?" Huesca asked.

"It's in there," Alexandra said, jerking her thumb at the Maserati.

"And Fruity?"

"He's in there too. Now how about our friend?" Alexandra asked.

"I've got him right here with me," Huesca said. He nodded at Murad, who turned around and opened the Hummer's passenger door, revealing Cornelius inside. "Now hand over the gold," the cartel leader told the girls, "and I'll give you your friend back."

"Okay," Destiny said. "You want the gold; you're getting it." She turned around and headed for the Maserati, and just as she did that, Murad said, "No funny business or else I shoot."

"No funny business, man," Destiny repeated as she went into the back seats and began hauling out the gym bags filled with gold bars and diamonds and other precious stuff. She carried the bags two at a time and laid them in ground between the girls and Huesca. "It's all in there," she said once she had delivered the final bag. "I counted."

Huesca walked over to one of the bags, unzipped it, and looked around briefly. "Let their buddy loose," he told Murad, which confirmed that he had found all that he needed to see inside the bag. Murad walked over to Cornelius, hauled him out of the Hummer, cut the duct tape wound around his wrists, and shoved him towards the girls. "Are you okay, Nellie?" Alexandra asked once he was with them.

"Never been better," Cornelius replied.

"All right, now where's Fruity?" Huesca asked.

"He's in the trunk," Alexandra replied.

"Murad, come!" Huesca said, and the bodyguard trailed his master like a faithful dog. "The trunk, you say?" he repeated. Alexandra nodded, and Huesca nodded, both at Alexandra and at Murad, and then the two of them took out their weapons, raised them, and fired indiscriminately at the trunk.

"Oh, my God!" the three girls and Cornelius shouted out loud. "What the hell was that for!?"Alexandra demanded. "I thought you said you just wanted to talk to him!"

"You can't to people like Fruity Arellano, little girl," Huesca replied. "Guys like him are mad dogs. You can't talk to them, you can't reason with them, you can't negotiate with them. The only way to deal with them is to kill them and their lot."

Huesca waved Murad over to the back of the Maserati. He took out a key in his pocket, stuck it into the trunk, and opened it. He was expecting to see the bloody, battered and bruised body of Fructuoso Arellano. What he did not expect to find in there was nothing.

"There's no one in here," he said.

"What?" Alexandra asked.

"There's nothing in here!" Huesca turned around and aimed his gun at the four. "Where the hell is Fruity!?" he demanded. "Did you little fuckwads let the bastard go!?"

"What are you talking about? Fruity's there!" Alexandra said. "He should be there!"

"But he ain't!" Huesca shouted. "Bunch of lying, cheating, stealing, double-crossing bastards!" He raised his pistol up at them and put his finger on the trigger and prepared to fire.

Suddenly, the sunroof on the Maserati opened up, and out popped Fruity. "Eat lead, bitches!" he shouted, and he brought up his own pistol and fired at Huesca and Murad. The two twitched around as bullets went into their bodies, and then they crumpled to the ground dead.

"Holy shit!" Destiny shouted.

Karl Marx University will host their closest rivals in the Zephyr conference, Yuma University, but the game will not be celebrated, in respect for those who lost their lives to cyclone Alexina earlier in the week. KMU has indicated that the pre-game show will be cancelled and replaced with a tribute. Players will wear black armbands, and the national flag will be hung at half mast for the duration of the game.

KMU has requested the co-operation of Yuma University in this, and asks that they do not bring a band to perform at the game. Players from both universities will be asked to participate in a minute's silence before the first kick-off, and are invited to kneel on the pitch in solidarity and respect for those in the southwest of Barunia, both the deceased and those suffering through the destruction. Spectators will also be asked to respect the minute's silence.

Cyclone Alexina caused widespread devastation across both West Barunia and Marion states. The city of Sheppardton was worst hit, with much of the city flooded after the Sheppard river burst its banks. Rescue workers are still attempting to pull people from the waters. A confirmed 32 people have died in Sheppardton alone, but hundreds are still missing, and there are fears that the death toll could increase dramatically after the waters recede. There were a further 6 confirmed fatalities elsewhere, but once again authorities are expecting that to rise within the coming days.

Honu Release Safety Valve in Win Against Ramusok Capital
Story by Abraham Shepherd

Mosaic—The South Seas University Honu made a statement to the NSCF world on Saturday night, and the biggest news is that it might not have been the statement many in the media were expecting. In a week of media frenzy concerning the team's recent attention to uniforms, it was the return to football that spoke the loudest on the primetime stage as the Honu defeated #1 Ramusok Capital 23-22.

In a Plumeria Garden venue that had been dubbed by some media as the "Jersey Shore Fashion Show," the Honu surprised everybody when they marched out onto the field wearing their normal jerseys, complete with the numbers that have been listed on the official team page since the beginning of the season. What is more, each jersey squarely noted each individual player's name. As the media circus focused on the possible "gimmick" play of the Honu in previous weeks concerning changing of jersey protocol, it appeared Coach Goose Carneghy was ready to send a clear proclamation to the NSCF: this team needs no trickery to compete with college football's finest.

One of the biggest headlines coming into the matchday six game was what new wrinkle Carneghy would unveil against Ramusok Capital, and just how exactly the Horizon conference rival would prepare for it. And if the Dragons took any additional preparation, Carneghy did not give them a chance to showcase it as his team went toe-to-toe with the perennial favorites.

With the score tied at 20, the game came down to the final minutes after the teams had traded two touchdowns and two field goals earlier in the evening. With just 2:20 left in the game, Ramusok Capital's special teams unit made a spectacular play, pinning the Honu offense at the one yard line as the Dragons played some late game field position. After Sterling Sparrow was twice stifled for no gain, a bad snap on third down left the Honu feeling lucky that Ezra Talbot fell on the ball to maintain possession, albeit for a critical fourth down. And it was at this venture that Carneghy called perhaps the biggest play of the game.

Instead of allowing Sawyer Greene to attempt a kick out of the shadow of the goal post, Carneghy instead instructed the punter to run out of the back of the endzone in attempt to avoid a Ramusok Capital block. The calculated move put two points on the board for the Dragons, but it also allowed the Honu a free kick from the twenty yard line, essentially buying a small amount of field position. In a season where the Honu had started to hit their offensive stride, Carneghy would put his trust in the hands of the defense.

With all three timeouts remaining for South Seas University, Ramusok Capital could not afford to sit back on their haunches, and had to at least try to gain yards rather than setting up in victory formation. In front of a deafening Plumeria Garden crowd, freshman Adawale Jesumbo beat RCU offensive lineman Hansi Olbrich to get a much needed tackle for loss on first down. Second and third down were met with similar results as the Honu defense fed off of the crowd's energy. Ramusok Capital had been forced to punt.

And with that, Ezra Talbot went to work. With just 36 seconds on the clock and no timeouts, Talbot found receiver Daniel Pascual and runningback Moses Gervaise for two quick sideline first downs. With their attention focused on the sidelines, Talbot then gashed Ramusok Capital between the seams for a thirty yard connection to Levi Savage, who despite his tight end status has become one of the biggest play receivers for the Honu over the past two seasons. A spike with five seconds remaining left just enough time for South Seas University's Ranger Cisterns to put the ball through the uprights on a 48 yard fieldgoal as time expired.

Speaking after the game, Carneghy explained his preparations for the big game. "We said you have to be prepared for anything," he noted. "In this case, the media wanted Ramusok Capital to prepare for the unexpected; in this case perhaps the unexpected was that we came to play football, not hide and seek."

"That safety we conceded was a tough call," Carneghy stated when asked about his end game strategy. "The statistics say when you are tied, you don't do that. You try to kick it and play defense. But Ramusok was chomping at the bit. [Cygnus] Cason almost got to our punter just a bit earlier in the quarter. We had to buy ourselves a bit of room. Luckily Coach Fisafua called a hell of game and bailed me out on that one; and Talbot made the perfect adjustment at the line on that toss to Levi. Really, we got out of that one with just enough plays on our side."

With the win, the Honu figure to shake up the top ten rankings posted by Sporting World magazine. Even so, Carneghy refused to take the media bait when asked where he thought the Honu should be ranked moving forward. Instead, his response came as, "I don't think you guys get it. Maybe you weren't watching your own news reports this week—I don't know, but I don't get it. It should be pretty clear from the past month that you guys are the ones who care about numbers; I don't care about numbers, especially after week six. We'll let our football talk for itself, and then we'll worry about numbers after week 16."

South Seas University heads on the road to Palm View University next week. Despite the impressive performance against Ramusok Capital, the Honu need to be cautious of a letdown game sandwiched between this important win and an week 8 tilt against Stoneshore College. Still, for this week at least, it appears that Coach Carneghy has put his team back on track, and has finally helped them to the point of competition with at least one of the NSCF's elite teams.

The question remains: will the Honu be able to parlay their momentum and continue to improve towards the goal of an NSCF championship?

"Jesus, Mary and Joseph, what the fuck just happened!"

Fruity Arellano had gotten out of the Maserati and was now standing in front of Destiny, Alexandra, Allison and Cornelius with his pistol aimed at their little group. Rage burned unbridled in his eyes, and he looked ready to pull the trigger at the slightest movement.

"Fruity, no," Alexandra said in a low and she hoped soothing voice. "Put the gun down. Put the gun down."

"So you wanna talk now, you washed-up Latina?" Fruity ranted. "No more silent treatment from you, you silly bitch?"

Destiny suddenly moved in between Fruity's gun and Alexandra. "No, Fruity," she said. "The killing stops tonight. If you wanna shoot my friends, you gotta shoot me first."

"Stay out of this, Blondie," Fruity said.

"Destiny, what the heck are you doing?" Alexandra asked.

"Ssh," Destiny said. "Don't question me right now."

Fruity and Destiny stared at each other for a few moments, and then Fruity finally let go of the trigger and lowered the gun to his side. "Tonight, you all live," he said. "Because one of you was a friend."

"What did you do?" Alexandra asked Destiny.

"I took out the back seat of the Maserati to give Fruity a way out," Destiny replied.

"And you gave him a gun?"

"Yeah, I didn't think this all the way through."

"Oh, Jesus Christ, this is messed up," Cornelius muttered, holding his head in his hands.

"She gave Fruity fighting chance," Fruity said. "That's all I need. Hey, you four!" he shouted. "Help me get the bodies into the trunk."

Fruity and Destiny grunted with the effort of hauling Guillermo Huesca's body up from the ground where he had fallen to the trunk of the Maserati. As Huesca's body tumbled into the trunk, Fruity spat at the corpse and said, "Fat fucker. And yet he calls me the fat bastard. Judge not, lest ye be judged, Guillermo."

Behind them, Alexandra, Allison and Cornelius struggled to heave Murad's body into the trunk after Huesca. Fruity and Destiny eventually lent a hand and soon both bodies were within the trunk of the Maserati.

"Like your friend said, this is really messed up," Fruity said as he closed the trunk. "Wait a minute, though. I got something for you lot." He reached into one of the gym bags and took out a bar of gold, which he tossed to Destiny. "That's for giving me a fighting chance," he said. "And don't you dare refuse me this time."

"Okay then," Destiny said, and she tossed the bar to Cornelius, who tried to stick it into the waistband of his pants and failed. He picked it up and decided against putting it into his pants again.

"All right, get on out of here," Fruity said in the manner of an order. "Y'all are in too deep in this shit to come out smelling like roses now. You're better off leaving this place while the cops aren't here." When the others stared at him dumbfounded, he continued, "Go on! Get out of here! You don't wanna get caught up with the most wanted man in the country, don't you? Now scram!"

The four looked at Fruity, and then slowly they headed for what had been Guillermo Huesca's Hummer and got in. Before Destiny got in, Fruity turned to her and said, "I'll be seeing y'all later."

The last thing Destiny saw of Fructuoso Arellano was of the soldier-turned-gangster getting into the Maserati and setting off in the opposite direction from them.

The Hummer arrived in front of the World Famous Great Success Pawnshop an hour after they had left the General's View. Alexandra parked the Hummer across the street from her brother's minivan, which she had left parked in front of the pawnshop itself. "Everyone all right?" she asked.

"Shocked, but fine, actually," Allison replied.

"Huesca and his goons actually treated me well for a kidnapped guy," Cornelius said. "I'll be fine. I still don't know what to do with this gold that Fruity gave us though."

"Destiny?" Alexandra called out. "You all right?"

"Huh?" Destiny turned around. "Yeah, I'm all right. Just thinking about what's next for us."

"What's next for us?" Alexandra repeated. "I think it's time that we went home."

HERZEGOVINA CITY- Northern Moravica, in week 6, moved to 5-1 in the Celestia Conference, and moved up the Sporting World rankings to #6 in the entire NSCF with a 10-0 shutout victory over Lone Wolf University. Northern Moravica, once again, was led by its defense, as they won the turnover battle 4-2 against Lone Wolf University, and they recorded their 4th shutout victory of the season. While the season is barely halfway over, they have only allowed a whopping 4 points a game, giving them the #1 scoring defense in all of college football. The record for an entire season is 4.5 points per game, and if they keep this up, then they will get close to the NSCF record for best scoring defense of all time.

The question is, why is it so good this season? While many expected the defense to lead, nobody expected 4 shutouts through 6 games, and having a record-pacing defense through week 6 of the season. The three major reasons are there. #1 is coaching, #2 is Experience, and #3 is its increased aggressiveness.

Coaching

The #1 reason why the Northern Moravica defense has been so good through 6 weeks of the NSCF, has to be its coaching. The buck stops with Head Coach Horace Browning Jr. He was the Defensive Coordinator at Stoneshore College for the last 3 seasons of the NSCF, and that culminated with having a top defense bring the team a NSCF title last season. Their defense led them, and when AD Pelias Patras was looking for a Coach to lead this team, Browning was his top target.

He figured that Browning would come to Northern Moravica, and after giving him a lucrative offer, Horace Browning left Stoneshore College to become Head Coach at Northern Moravica, and he has had crazy amounts of success. Browning has instilled a sense of discipline in the Northern Moravica defense, which is different for a school that has historically been offensive focused, especially when the Athletic Director was the leader of some of the best offenses in Banijan history. Patras knew, at the level of competition in the NSCF, defense would win championships, and he was right.

Browning has settled in comfortably at Northern Moravica. Even though there was a lot of controversy when Northern decided to leave domestic college football for the NSCF, the move has been an unbridled success, with Horace Browning as the main reason. He has turned this defense into one of the most disciplined defenses in the entire NSCF, and they are not afraid to face anybody, which means that they will keep their aggressive style of play against anybody.

Experience

The experience of this team has to make it much easier for Horace Browning to coach the team. The defense's senior leaders fully embraced the move by Pelias Patras to hire outside, and said that they were 'extremely excited' to be coached by the world's best coaching candidate, who has proven success at the highest levels of college football. There is not a single true freshman starter in their starting lineup, which helps Horace Browning. In fact, 7 starters are upperclassmen, including 4 seniors. The only first year player in the starting lineup is redshirt freshman Jasenko Horny, who has 3 interceptions on the season and was the #1 recruit in all of Banija his senior season of high school. He was a prodigy, and he has crazy amounts of talent.

The 7 upperclassmen are leaders on the defense. They have senior starters at both cornerback positions, and their leading tacklers are both seniors, both senior linebackers. They have experience, and they have the drive that comes with being a senior, and their experience surely helps lead this defense. It will be a big loss when they lose both of their starting cornerbacks and their top two linebackers to graduation, and that will not be an easy hole for Horace Browning to fill.

Aggressiveness

Northern Moravica has been fantastic in the turnover department. They have a +6 turnover margin, and not shockingly, have gone 5-0 in the games where they won the turnover battle, as opposed to being 0-1 when they lost the turnover battle(they lost the turnover battle 5-1 in their loss against St.Augustinus). Their defense has had a great amount of success forcing turnovers, forcing 14 turnovers on the season so far, with 9 interceptions and 5 fumble recoveries. Winning the turnover battle makes it a heck of a lot easier to win a football game, and their defense has done exactly that.

They have gotten to 9 interceptions with their aggressive style of play. Head Coach Horace Browning places a large amount of emphasis on getting pressure on the quarterback, and he has talented enough defensive linemen to be able to generate pressure with 4 down linemen. When Banija blitzes, which they do often, they almost always get to the quarterback, which forces hurried throws and allows their defensive backs to go out and get the ball. Their secondary has not been burned being aggressive yet, and so far, it has worked in forcing turnovers and winning the battle of field position, which is a great advantage for Northern when they have a short field.

VSC Seeks Shutdown of NSCF Project

After what seemed to be great initial success last season with Mar Sara Tech, contesting their conference championship for most of the season and a great showing in their nonconference games, the VSC has seen the results of this years NSCF season and has deemed the project a failure. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one high profile VSC member said "The results of the teams this season, both whom are under .500 and will not be seeing playoff action have caused great concern. Couple the fact that there was little organization among member schools to schedule ours and the absence of leadership of the event, the VSC can not under good faith allow the schools to continue to compete in this contest in the future. It would be a waste of the school's budget as well as the thousands of silver coins used to equip and provide travel for the teams." It is said that the severing of the project requires approval by the member schools, however that seems a formality at this point, considering the tarnishing of their reputation as well as the costs that have been incurred by the schools for little reward.

Heavenly Snakes Fires Coach after Sixth Loss

After another dismal loss, the University of Heavenly Snakes Caracals has announced that they have decided to fire coach Stanely Smallbrow. In a press conference after the Caracals' dismal 37-24 loss to Thereisnogodistan Community College, the Heavenly Snakes' athletic director, Mark Rubble, was on hand to announce the decision to the reporters that were gathered there.
"It has come to the point where we are looking for wins to become a better college athletically, but we don't believe our current coach has the capabilities to make this dream a reality. We are looking to move in a different direction, and that direction doesn't involve Stanely Smallbrow. Effective immediately, assistant coach Peter Freaking will assume the role of Caracals' head coach. He will remain in that position until we find a suitable replacement. All practices will proceed like normal."
Smallbrow had this to say about the decision,

Will Kovach continue to start? Quarterback controversy heating up at Northern Moravica

Image
Kovach reacts to his 2nd interception of the game against the San Llera University of Archaelogy. He was pulled after the throw.

HERZEGOVINA CITY- Northern Moravica, for the 5th time in 7 games, did not allow a touchdown, as their defense dominated once again in what ended up being a 20-3 victory for Northern Moravica. The turnover battle was tied at 2, but Northern had a pick-6 as well as a 55 yard touchdown run for Zivorad Dvorak, while the San Llera University of Archaeology was not able to convert on their turnover opportunities. Northern followed their own interception by intercepting an Archaeology pass on their next play from scrimmage, and free safety Branislav Burian took it to the house. Archaeology's 2nd interception led to a field goal for them, their only points of the night.

What was the worrying sight, and somewhat surprising sight, was the decision by Head Coach Horace Browning to pull staring quarterback Slawomir Kovach late in the 3rd quarter. When you consider how good the rest of the team, especially Northern's defense, has been doing, it has been kind of surprising to see the struggles that they have been having at the quarterback position. Kovach has been getting worse as the season has gone along, while the rest of his team has been getting better. The numbers tell the story perfectly.

Slawomir Kovach has an absolutely awful touchdown:interception ratio, as he has 3 touchdown passes in comparison to 8 interceptions. However bad the numbers are however, they have been in a downward trend. Kovach, in weeks 1-3, had 3 touchdown passes compared to one interception. Then, the wheels went off against St.Augustinus. That school was the preseason favorite to win the entire thing, but 3 interceptions and no touchdowns is simply unacceptable at this level. However, he has struggled since then too. Since week 3, he has thrown 7 interceptions without a single touchdown pass, with a 4 week draught since his last touchdown pass, which was against Kanza University. He only has 2 200 yard passing games this season, and he has not shown consistency or effectiveness moving the ball in the air.

The wheels came off today for Slawomir Kovach. For whatever reason, his confidence was destroyed after the nightmare loss on the road to St.Augustinus, and that has made everything worse for Kovach. After staying error free in their big week 5 upset victory against Kanza University, he threw two interceptions last week in a 10-0 road victory at Lone Wolf University, and threw two interceptions today against the San Llera University of Archaeology.

After his 2nd interception, they used the short field to get a quick first down, and settled for a field goal. To the surprise of many in the same, it had seemed like Head Coach Horace Browning had enough. He decided to send on backup quarterback Dorbin Veselovsky, a senior quarterback. He had an OK game, but the fact of the matter is that 7 weeks into the season, the quarterback situation for Northern Moravica is not settled, and that is very problematic for this team's championship hopes.

Nobody thought Kovach would struggle like this this far into the season. They figured there would be a learning curve as he adjusted to the defenses and the new system, but nobody expected this to happen. 3 of his last 4 games he had multiple interceptions, and he hasn't thrown a touchdown pass in a month. There was reason to bench him, and Head Coach Horace Browning has stated that he does not know who he will start against Kanza University, but that the quarterback competition this week would be 'wide open' for all three quarterbacks, including 3rd stringer Davorko Siroky. Current redshirt quarterback Bratislav Vlaeva will keep his redshirt.

"We need to get strong play from our quarterbacks to win at this level", said Head Coach Horace Browning Jr. "Slawomir Kovach is a good quarterback, but I do not know what has gotten into him. Not a single touchdown pass in 4 games? 7 interceptions over that time span? It's uncharacteristic, and I needed to show Veselovsky the field and allow Kovach to see the bench. We'll have an open competition this week, and on Friday, before we board the plane, we will announce to the quarterbacks, and to the team, who is Saturday's starter. Our gameplan for Saturday will be the same regardless of who else is playing quarterback."

Needless to say, campus and Northern fans all over the country will be talking about who will be playing quarterback on Saturday for Northern Moravica. Kovach has been the starter since day 1, and he did start well, showing that he has talent. Veselovsky is a senior, and with the spot open, he will definitely give his all for the starting spot. While Kovach is more accurate and more mobile than Veselovsky, Veselovsky has a massive arm, which allows him to stretch the field in ways that Kovach can't. Few expect 3rd stringer Siroky to be a serious competitor, though Browning and offensive coordinator Peter Ras have both said that they will 'keep their options open'.
