Saintland National Information

History of Saintland

Saintland was founded in 966. Prior to that year, the island that is now Saintland was an uninhabited island in the World Changers region near the north pole. In the year 966, the Christian Church, which was still united at that time, held a now-forgotten Council. At this Council, they discussed some arcane matters related to Christology. There were 2 factions at this council that had irreconcilable differences. The majority faction are known today as the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church.

However, a small minority of Christian bishops rejected the decision of the Council of 966. Knowing that they would be persecuted for their beliefs if they remained, they left their homes and got on a number of ships. Their brothers and sisters, members of the nobility, went along with them. A Prince by the name of Paulus chose to go with them, because he believed they were right. They set out across the sea, praying that God would guide them to safety.

Somehow, they ended up traveling several thousand miles by sea, arriving at a remote island far to the north of their original homes. They were widely believed to have perished at sea. Soon, the very existence of the Council of 966 would be forgotten. The Prince would be crowned King Paulus I, the first King of the Kingdom of Saintland. Centuries went by and the Sanctii were able to keep their existence secret from the rest of the world.

Despite their isolation from the rest of the world, starting in 1038, the King's Government sent periodic expeditions to explore the outside world. They would inevitably return to Saintland, with information regarding what had happened since the last expedition. The explorers brought knowledge of new inventions back to Saintland. The King consulted with the Patriarch of the Church and they jointly decided which of the new inventions and innovations were worth adopting and which should not be adopted. This would prove to be very useful to the authorities in Saintland, as they successfully kept the Renaissance, Reformation and Enlightenment out of the Kingdom.

The policy of isolation would be ended in 1788. In 1825, King Josephus X decided to abolish the practice of serfdom. After breaking the power of the nobility, King Josephus X industrialized Saintland. However, Saintland never adopted laissez-faire policies and has only developed a barely modern economy. Usury laws remain on the books, intellectual property legislation remains non-existent and protective labor legislation was adopted very early on in the industrialization process. As Saintland industrialized, a special legal status called "foreign resident" was created, which permits foreign nationals to reside in Saintland and remain exempt from some of Saintland's laws.

Today, Saintland is a semi-modern nation. Despite that, the nation retains its divine right absolute monarchy and the Church of Saintland remains a powerful force in the island nation. Saintland's population remains relatively small, as it is estimated at around 600,000. Despite the small population, Saintland has somehow developed a large number of world-class athletes that have been able to go toe-for-toe with the best athletes from the rest of the multiverse.

A little over a year ago, King Paulus XV was assassinated at the World Bowl XXII Championship Game. Following those events, the former Prince Petrus ascended to the Throne as King Petrus XX. In the year since, King Petrus XX has attempted, without much success, to modernize Saintland.

Another unusual event involving Saintland last year was the nation's mysterious appearance in northern Rushmore. The cause of this mysterious event has been a subject of much debate, but is not currently understood..

Transportation

Due to the lack of an automobile manufacturing industry in Saintland and the prohibitive cost of importing foreign-made cars, the automobile has never been popular in Saintland. 2 years ago, King Paulus XV decided to ban private ownership of automobiles for public safety reasons. Therefore, visitors to Saintland will not have the use of automobiles of any sort.

Under the laws of Saintland, automobiles may only be used by police, the military, fire departments and licensed bus or taxi services. In the cities, you should be able to find a bus or a taxi. If you see a police or military vehicle on the road, it is likely headed toward a crime scene of some sort or is being used to transport a criminal who has been apprehended by the authorities. It is highly recommended to move to the sidewalk when you see an automobile coming down the street.

Saintland has a highly developed high-speed rail network that connects every community in Saintland, from the tiniest villages to the cities of St. Petrus and St. Paulus. This is the only fairly quick way to travel between the communities of Saintland.

Bicycles are a popular form of transportation in Saintland. There are bicycle rental stores in most communities throughout the Kingdom. The most popular bicycle rental stores, among international visitors to Saintland, are located at the St. Paulus and St. Petrus airports. Bicycle parking is provided throughout Saintland and locks are included with every bike. The use of helmets is optional, but recommended.

Lodging

Until recently, Saintland lacked the necessary lodging to host large numbers of foreign visitors at a given time. However, in the hopes of luring major international sports events to Saintland, the King's Government has constructed a number of hotels in the major cities, over the past few years. All players, coaches and officials from the nations that advance to Saintland will receive complimentary lodging at the Royal Hotel in St. Petrus. If requested, hotel staff will perform a wake up call to ensure that your players make it to the arena in time for the start of their game.

Weather

Saintland is located in a polar region, which means that the weather is relatively cold, even during the summer. The average summer temperature in Saintland is 14 degrees (Celsius), which is the equivalent of 57.2 Fahrenheit. On an exceptionally warm day in Saintland, the weather may reach the mid-70s Fahrenheit (24 Celsius), but temperatures in the neighborhood of 7 Celsius (44.6 Fahrenheit) are not unheard of during the summer.

The King Paulus XV Memorial Games will take place in the spring, so temperatures will generally be above freezing, but not by much.

Language

Saintland speaks a dialect of Latin. Sanctii Latin is a living language, so it does have some differences from classical Latin. The degree of difference between the Latin of the Vulgate and the Latin spoken in Saintland is similar to the difference between the English of the King James Bible and the English that is widely spoken today.

Although Latin is the native language of the Sanctii, foreign language education is heavily emphasized in the nation's education system. The average person you run into on the street should be able to speak English relatively fluently, so there is not much of a language barrier.

Currency

Saintland uses a currency based on bullion. The main coins in Saintland are the Denarius, which is a one-ounce gold coin and the Argentii, a one-ounce silver coin. Gold and silver coins are also available in smaller weights, all the way down to 1/100th of an ounce of silver.

If you do not possess bullion, Universal Standard Dollars are widely accepted, as are the Republican Thaler and the Acedonian Ace.

Entertainment

Saintland is a theocracy that operates under a very strict version of Biblical law, so many forms of entertainment are illegal in Saintland. However, King Petrus XX has been, gradually, relaxing those laws somewhat.

There are 5 television networks in Saintland, which are numbered from Royal One to Royal Five. These networks will be airing 24-7 coverage of the King Paulus XV Memorial Games, for the duration of the Games. Additional programming

All athletes participating in IBC 17 will receive complimentary Saints upon their arrival in Saintland. The Saint is an "interactive entertainment" handheld device which also has numerous features that are commonly found in smartphones. Every Saint will include a copy of the Bible and the Real Basketball Simulator. This will be a special IBC 17 version of the Real Basketball Simulator, including all of the teams from the current edition of the IBC.

Additional programming is available on Sanctustube. The Royal Networks maintain a popular Sanctustube channel, which will include live streams and on-demand access to every game from the past 5 editions of the IBC. It also includes on-demand access to any game from recent editions of other major tournaments, completely free of charge. If you'd rather watch programming from your home nation, you can probably find it on Sanctustube. Outside of Saintland, if you watch an unauthorized video of a non-Sanctii show on Sanctustube, you will see the show unedited. However, when accessed within Saintland, Sanctustube displays a highly edited version. Anything that is deemed incompatible with the values of Saintland will be removed and background music is usually replaced with music of Sanctii origin. It is not unheard of for the King's Government censors to ideologically translate a foreign television program or movie to reflect the values of Saintland.

There are movie theaters in the cities of Saintland which mostly show (low-budget) movies produced by Sanctii directors. Movies must be approved by the censors before they can be shown in movie theaters. Sometimes, popular foreign films will be broadcast in the theater, typically after an ideological translation and massive editing.

Cantus Virginum is the most popular musical group in Saintland. The group consists of around a hundred members at any given time. Their members are young women who are either still legally minors under the laws of Saintland or have only recently become adults. Their music is primarily popular with their peers and with girls slightly younger than them. It is widely considered, even among citizens of Saintland, to be of poor quality. It used to be considered impolite in Saintland to publicly criticize their (lack of) singing ability. However, while they are still fairly popular, the group's image and popularity took a hit following a scandal last year.

Important Laws

As Saintland is a theocratic nation, pornography, prostitution and public nudity are all highly illegal. The ban on pornography includes "written" pornography, a category that includes most romance novels of foreign origin. Tobacco, Cannabis and other recreational drugs are also illegal. Drinking alcohol is legal, although it is highly regulated. There are limits on how much alcohol an individual may purchase. Drinking alcohol outside of communion is unlawful for minors, university students and soldiers that are not officers. Excessive drunkenness in public is illegal. Contrary to popular misconception, protesting is actually legal in Saintland, but sedition and blasphemy are illegal. In effect, this means that any protest against the King's Government or the Church of Saintland is considered a criminal act. However, a protest against horse racing at the Saintland Triple Crown 2 years ago by citizens of the Equestrian States was permitted. There are laws on the books that prohibit aiding unlawful organizations, such as Feministvs Sanctvsterra and the Christian State, in any way whatsoever. However, since the Christian State has the covert support of many hard-liners within the Church, the laws against supporting them are not enforced very well. Possession of firearms by anybody who is not a police officer or a soldier is strictly prohibited.

While there are sumptuary laws on the books, most of them will not be enforced upon visitors to the IBC. However, women will be required to wear a head covering while in public. Exceptions will be made for athletes, during games, should the head covering interfere with their ability to compete to the best of their ability. Visitors who are not following the sumptuary laws should keep their IDs with them at all times and be ready to show them to any soldier or police officer upon request. This exemption will apply to nationals from nations that are participating in the IBC and will remain in effect until up to 72 hours after the final game of the IBC Finals. Any foreign nationals that remain in Saintland 3 days after the IBC Finals will automatically obtain visitor status, with their 90 day clock to either apply for foreign resident status, apply for immigrant status or leave starting at the moment they arrived in Saintland.

Customs

Everybody visiting Saintland for the IBC should expect to go through Customs prior to entering the nation. Customs is a branch of the Royal Army, which is tasked with keeping contraband out of Saintland. Customs will thoroughly search all items that are taken into Saintland. They will primarily be searching for guns, tobacco, cannabis, other recreational drugs, blasphemous material, seditious material and pornography. If a book appears to be "written pornography," that can cause a long delay in Customs while the Customs officials check the list of known works of "written pornography" to see if the book in question is on the list.

Venues

Royal Square Garden

Royal Square Garden, located in St. Petrus, is the most prestigious arena in Saintland. It is the home arena of both Saintland's National Basketball Team. The arena seats 17,467. The first 5 games listed on the Saintland portion of the schedule for any Casaran matchday will be played at Royal Square Garden. St. Petrus is the capitol of Saintland, with a population that isn't much larger than the seating capacity of RSG.

Apostolic Arena

The Apostolic Arena, located in St. Paulus, is the largest arena in Saintland, seating 19,302. The Arena was somewhat run-down at the time of WCoH 23 earlier this year, but has since been renovated. It will host the 6th through 10th games listed on the Saintland portion of the schedule for Casaran matchdays. St. Paulus is the largest city in Saintland, with a population of a little over 50 thousand.

Civitate Dei Arena

Civitate Dei Arena, located in St. Augustinus, is a relatively new arena on the campus of the University of St. Augustinus with a capacity of 13,209. Although it was originally intended as a sports arena, it has primarily been used thus far to host concerts and other events, since St. Augustinus does not have many indoor sports teams. It will host the final 4 games listed on the Saintland portion of the schedule for Casaran matchdays. St. Augustinus is a relatively small town dominated by the local university, which is the home of the NSCF 9 champions.

Information

Nation - The Fiefdom of Cosumar. A constitutional monarchy renowned for its civil rights, stunning landscape, space program, and sporting culture.

Region - Atlantian Oceania

Team Nickname - Stallions

Team Style - +3. Coach Dupree likes to rotate Simmons, Sharikovich and XXX at point guard and in spot duty behind veteran superstar Jakk Klyde at shooting guard. The idea is to always have a fresh pair of legs and experienced hands guiding the offense, allowing Cosumar to maintain their up-tempo style of play even late in the game. That style of play suits the current personnel, particularly with the versatile Klyde and athletic young forward Benjamin Seymour manning the wings. Klyde and Seymour both ranked among the CBA's top 15 in fast-break points last season. The Stallions have two inside presences in Antoine Arthur (the length) and Ronald Savon (the brawn) who can run the floor and finish. Young power forward Severin Søholt, 21, has improved dramatically since IBC 16 but is still a bit raw. He will never have blazing speed, but he’s a lethal 3-point threat with a sweet touch from anywhere on the floor, especially for someone of his size (a true stretch-4).

History - This will be Cosumar's seventh International Basketball Championships. Our first was IBC 9 in Mytannion, but thereafter we did not return until IBC 13. Cosumar has always been moderately successful in the tournament, but our first real success came here in Electrum in IBC 15, where we made a run all the way to the quarterfinals before being knocked out by #1 Saintland by the slimmest of margins. After further success in IBC 16, Cosumar is now one of the highest ranked nations in international basketball and has become a consistent Pot 1 squad. Expectations are higher than ever. Could this be Cosumar's first chance to win the whole thing?

Domestic League - Cosumar Basketball Association (CBA). Following the RL NBA model, the CBA consists of 32 teams with 16 in each conference (Eastern and Western). After a season of 62 games, the top eight teams in each conference advance to a playoff for the CBA Title. Best of 7 series are used in the playoffs. Three editions have been completed under the modern structure, with the Parougan Plague winning the most recent one. The Cosumarite teams did not fair too well at the IUBC international competitions. Fort Archer Gorillas had the most success, advancing to the Round of 16 of the Falcon Plate.

We will send slaves from Slave Island Number 15 to participate in the IBC. They will be coached by Colony Slavemaster Freddy Rogers. The team itself is slaves, but he is their master, at least for now. At the Slave Island, slaves farm and produce other goods for Gregoryisgodistan. Many of them are originally from foreign countries such as Quebec and Taxachusetts and were sent to Gregoryisgodistan permanently either as part of negotiations to end a war or as part of an economic deal in combination with punishment for their crimes committed in their native land. Regardless, they have been given new identities as slaves and made "citizens" of their Slave Island so they can compete. Other residents of the Slave Islands include Gregoryisgodistanis sentenced to a lifetime of slave labor for certain crimes, mostly repeat offenders. The only crime that is punishable by a lifetime of slave labor for a first offense is attempting to communicate in text using a calculator (such as the classic "hello" trick.) However, numerous other offenses are punishable by lifetime of slave labor for repeat offenders. For instance, wearing blue on Tuesday is punishable by five years of slave labor for a first offense and lifetime of slave labor for a second offense. Flushing gruel down the toilet is punishable by 20 years of slave labor for a first offense and a life of slave labor for a second offense. Those sentenced to non-life terms of slave labor are not sent to Slave Islands. Once you go to a Slave Island, you never leave. Unless you're a slavemaster or a pilot responsible for transporting slaves. Then maybe you do. This is the case for all Slave Islands, but all these slaves are from Slave Island Number 16, as all Slave Islands are considered separate territories and compete separately.

Also, the slaves will be under heavy armed guard at all times to stop them from defecting, and just in case they do try to defect, GPS collars have been installed on them that will detonate a bomb and blow them to bits if they leave a designated area. Designated areas include the team hotel, the team bus, and the arenas where they are playing. The GPS knows where the hotel and arenas are, which is easy since they don't move and their coordinates are public information, and the bus has its own tracking device. If anyone is helping them defect, they stand a good chance of being killed as well by the blast, as do any innocent civilians within a 50 foot radius or so. But it is almost certain the slaves would be shot and killed if they tried to defect. They are kept in chains at all times when not practicing or playing, even on the bus to and from the stadium and hotel. Even the players on the bench are chained to it. So they're just not getting away.

The extremely tactically smart coach of the FC Mildrid Kings, Aleix Bonaventura was the man chosen to take the helm of the first ever Erathi national basketball team. Stemming from his own young age, Aleix is known for preferring a very free flowing offensive game where the players instincts and innate abilities are trusted. Set plays are kept to a minimum as Bonaventura has his players shoot and move as they feel best. However, should the opposing team play with a particular style or have a certain weakness, Aleix Bonaventura will not hesitate to draw up a few plays for the team to put into action.

A superb athlete, Blake D'Aquino is the single most exciting Erathi basketball prospect ever. His 51.5 vertical saw D'Aquino collect several highlight dunks over his first professional season. Blessed with terrific ball handling and passing abilities, D'Aquino is the undisputed go to guy for the Erathi offense. D'Aquino is deadly from mid-range and from the 3-pt arc and will not hesitate to drive the lane for a close range finish. Defensively, despite his exceptional athleticism, his lack of size does present some challenges when going up against taller point guards or when he switches to guard another position. Quick hands on defense help to nab nearly 3 steals per game. However, Blake D'Aquino is too eager to try and block shots and bites very easily on shot fakes. He loves to pull highlight reel moves and always looks to hit the greatest dunks and best no-look passes. His first season in the league saw him get off to a slow start before he exploded into action the second half of the season, hitting a season high 28 points against the Baranto Broncos. The 2014 Rookie of the Year will be looking to work on his assists, only averaging five and a half on the season, as well as trying to become a top outside shooting presence.

The driving force behind the Celio Dragons second place finish, Max Desuazi had an absolutely wonderful season, coming second in the mvp voting despite this only being his second year in the league. Offensively, he is a pure shooter who knows how to move the ball around and take quick shots. Most lethal from mid-range, Desuazi also has excellent three-point shooting, with a quick release that is nearly unblockable. When it comes to close range shooting, Desuazi has a deadly eurostep that he uses to deftly navigate past defenders. Of course, he always has his athleticism to rely on for a change of pace. He is very skilled at crossovers and hesitations, and use these to ice his defender before blowing by them for an emphatic slam. Defensively, Desuazi has quick hands and length to help contain his man on the perimeter, as well as using his speed to defend against the drive. Athletically, he is very quick, with a deadly first step and he can really race by the other team if he gets a chance to get to his full speed.

One of the top prospects of the 2015 EBA draft, Jonathon West's unique blend of size, athleticism, and shooting mechanics means that he's only going to get better. His incredible passing ability and court vision will combine to elevate West into one of the premier passers in the EBA from day one, and watching him run the pick through the upcoming years will be an amazing sight. If West can work to develop a consistent mid-range and 3-point shot, he could very well skyrocket into the top echelon of point guards in the league. With his size and hypothetical shooting ability, he could also shunt off to the 2, where his passing ability could open up all sorts of interesting options. In a nutshell, he will drafted for the passing ability with the potential to develop into an elite scorer. During the IBC, he'll pick up some minutes during blowouts and at the end of games. Getting to run in a high tempo yet diverse offense will offer invaluable experience for Jonathon West, and he will also benefit from the unique opportunity to play with several future potential teammates.

A superb finisher, Greg Harrison is capable of converting difficult lay-ups even after hard collisions with large defenders. If the close range option isn't available, he has a very strong mid-range shot. One of the more intriguing aspects of Harrison's game is that he's starting to develop a lost post game which, if developed properly, could lead to making Harrison one of the most versatile scoring players in the Erathi league. Despite his overall scoring ability, he has a very poor 3 point shot, shooting 31.3% in his first professional season. Defensively, he makes use of his elite athleticism to lockdown his man and to nab several steals and blocks every game. A solid, solid player, Harrison looks set to become an elite shooting guard coupled with Blake D'Aquino with the FC Mildrid Kings.

A unique combination of athleticism, three point shooting, and hustle defense, Steven Barber is the energy man for the Dragons. His amazing athleticism allows him to play above the rim and a quick first step means Aíro can change gears quickly to try and get by his man. What a fantastic year it was for Leo Gortan. With a 21.8/3.6/6.9 statline, Gortan posted career highs in points, assists, and rebounds. And he shot a career high 37.8% from behind the arc. Not too shabby. He completely took over the team in the second half of the season, routinely creating buckets from hopeless looking situations. He has all the athletic tools to be a star, and the addition of excellent shooting and finishing ability may very well prove to see Lewis become an All-Star his first year in the league. With his tremendous leaping ability, DeMar Lewis finishes excellently above and around the rim, and is able to contort his body to avoid defenders while driving to the hoop and in the air. His ability to stretch the floor due to his shooting will prove to be an invaluable asset to his team, creating space for his teammates to attack the basket. We'd like to see him paired with a drive and dish point guard, or a big man who commands a double team. His biggest weakness is his inability to create for himself off the dribble. He has a tendency to throw unreasonable passes at times; He sees the pass but is having trouble executing. One of the most important aspects of his game is his ability to light the torch for his team. He can sense when morale is down and takes it upon himself to hit a deep three, an emphatic dunk, or starting trying to move the ball around to get his teammates into a rhythm. If he can keep up the development on his ball handling skills and post-game, there really will be no stopping him. Future superstar.

A rarity on the Erathi team, Andrew Abreu is not particularly skilled nor an exceptional athlete or even an above average one. Instead, Abrue brings pure, raw strength to this team. A force to be reckoned with, the incredibly strong Abreu makes his living on the offensive and defensive boards and by contesting shots. Lethal from close range, Abreu can finish through contact and multiple defenders at the rim. Defensively, he is an absolute monster of a shot blocker. He is poor against a dribbling opponent and against speedier opponents, however his strength makes it hard to post up or get by. He is on this team for one purpose and one alone. To provide elite strength and rebounding to an otherwise physically average team. This past season saw him spend considerable time on his jump shot, leading to a jump in points per game, as well as field goal percentage. He still has plenty of work to do on shooting, but any improvement is great improvement, and this bodes ill for the rest of the league.

Playing Style

The Horneros play a fast-paced and aggressive style, seeking to push the tempo whenever possible. They're the kind of team that almost snatches the ball out of the basket, inbounds it, and is off to the races while the defense is trotting back. They do have a half-court offense, though. The "Horns" or double high post offense they employ revolves around the pick-and-roll. On defense, they usually apply three-quarter court press and stick to their men like glue on defense. This can lead to them getting beaten on the dribble drive, though.

The center, Marcelino Navarro, has risen from rural beginnings to become a force on both offense and defense for capital city club Córdoba C.B. Marco Pereira is a unstoppable force on offense, averaging over 20 points per game in the domestic league, and his defense has gradually become league-average. Javier Medina has emerged as the best point guard in the league, and his smooth handles and passes make this team go. Francisco Aguirre narrowly lost the MVP vote to Navarro last year and is averaging an even 22 points to match his age. Federico Rojas, even though he's a little small for the 3 position, fills his role well as a 3-and-D guy and will be tasked with facing the opponent's best wing player. The subs are mostly veterans on the smaller side, though Paolo Fernández has height and potential in abundance, and the lightning-quick Martin Herrera will be a key player as Medina's backup.

Basketball is a growing sport in Southwest Eastnorth, once a mid level sport, it has risen to levels seen of major Swennic sport such as Football and Association Footy. This squad is being lead by SBL Rookie of the Year and former Collegete Player of the year Frankie "Zombie" Kavinsky. Known as Zombie for lumbering up and down the court, Kavinsky is a dynamite center who can play suffocating defence and shoot anywhere from in the perimeter. Meanwhile Norvelle Hawes is one of the SBL's best when it comes to defense as a guard. Team him up with Eddy Merlone and have Boston Berlin come of the bench and ou got a dream team of guards. As for the Forward position it's "Dam" Sekker's time to shine. The one time no 1 overall pick in the SBL Draft is just now hitting his peak in the SBL, a brilliant defensive player, he lead the league with 11 defensive rebounds per game. Overall this is the right time to shine Internationally as the players are excited as puppies to be the first men to ever represent their nation in sports!
