The Hobbes Trophy II (CLOSED, Everything Thread)

Postby Super-Llamaland » Mon Jan 19, 2015 12:42 pm

The World Calvinball Federation, in solidarity with Bill Watterson, the Society for an Anarchist Government, the north-by-northwest foundation, the guy who writes xkcd, a questionably-alive quantum physicist, and viewers like YOU, hereby present...

THE SECOND SEMI-BIANNUAL HOBBES TROPHY

Llama, is everything okay?

Yup, 100%. Actually, I've always been like this but you just aren't perceptive enough.

What even is this I can't even

The Hobbes Trophy is an invitational Califan Rules Calvinball event (NOT Shadowbourne Rules Calvinball, which is contested in the soon-to-come Watterson Bowl) that traditionally takes place before each Watterson Bowl. This one will take place before the fourth Watterson Bowl, and the first Hobbes Trophy took place a few months before the first Watterson Bowl, at that time a one-time playoff between Shadowbourne and Paradystopia. Now, the idea has been revived by the World Calvinball Federation, who plans to revive Calvinball with another series of tournaments.

Past Champions

HT1: Paradystopia 33Soogy - 33Boogy Shadowbourne

Participants

Due to their high-quality RPing in the aborted Third Watterson Bowl, the following nations have been invited to the Hobbes Trophy.

Format

A randomly drawn semifinal, a third-place match, and a final. There won't be a group draw because there are not any groups to draw.

Schedule

January 24, 2014 to January 26, 2014 - Jeckland v. Barunia
January 26, 2014 to January 28, 2014 - Some Village v. Super-Llamaland
January 28, 2014 to January 30, 2014 - Third-place round
January 30, 2014 to February 1, 2014 - Grand Finalé

Welcome to Barunia, for the 2nd Hobbes Trophy!

On an island nestled amongst countless others in Barunia's vast Northern Islands archipelago, Barunia's Calvinball Oversight Committee have marked out a couple of playing areas with coloured flags. The committee is claiming the island is called Calvinball Island, but this may not actually be the case.

The two fields are as follows:
Field In Small Hollow - will host Barunia vs Jeckland and the 3rd Place game
Field Above Inverted Lobster - will host Some Village vs Super Llamaland and Grand Final

Schedule
All games will be run at the same time.
IMPORTANT: To keep the games down to three days, both players will provide a ruleset on each day

SEMI-FINALS: 27th Jan - 29th Jan, 13:00-14:00 UTC
FINALS: 30th Jan - 1st Feb, 13:00-14:00 UTC

Procedural notes
While RP is greatly encouraged, at the bare minimum each participant is expected to provide a rule set.
For clarity, please provide the rule set in the following format at the beginning or end of your post.

Code: Select all
OOC Sport (must be in xkoronate):
Percentage:
NB: Points for all 3 moves must equal 100%
----OPTIONAL FIELDS----

Official - well, kind of, it's only ironically enforced by the authorities cause, oh, it's a title, sorry -
Roster - well, kind of, can you really call it a roster when only... what? ... oh, damn, didn't meant to, I'll stop it, promised -
for the Nation - well, kind of, according to some students of international law we lack, I'll, no don't, don't, no, not the head, aaaaaah -
of Some Village

Obed
Should be good in jumping long distances
Doesn't know the rules - could be a plus
Moderate technician
Awful musician
Loving husband

“You see the inverted lobster?”

While Obed still tried to figure out what he meant, another question was fired.

“You’ve got everything with you that you need?”

Obed slowly nodded towards the official and unpacked his rug sack. Well, everything… It had been quite a scramble to get his stuff together when the invitation was announced that he’ld go to Barunia. And above all, no one on board of the Some Village could know he was here. Officially, he was at a congress upon fishing in non-territorial waters. Somehow, it had made sense to bring an angle and a ton of plastic bags, a pack of bait and army boots, a funny hat and wet gloves along.

But that didn’t seem very useful at all when he got an eye on the rules. While the Jeckish delegation prepared at the opposite side of the pitch, Obed started to whistle.

”You’re growing when the sun is up
even if you started like little stub
Continuing and maybe you might
tickle my armpits if I dance tonight.

Cause, grass, grass, grass, you’re getting taaaaaaaaaall
Green, yellow, brown, you’ve got it aaaaaaaaaaaaall

*whistle solo*

But, baby when the sun is down
the grooving goes all over the lawn
It’s smelling just like kerosene
I’m a mower, your grass is has-been!

Cause, grass, grass, grass, you’re getting taaaaaaaaaall
Green, yellow, brown, you’ve got it aaaaaaaaaaaaall”

Barunia's Roster for the 2nd Hobbes Trophy

The Calvinball Oversight Committee - Universal Play program had lived up to its acronym, accidentally deleting the roster for the 2nd Hobbes Trophy. So once again, they are presented here.

Chief doer of anything: Rufus, a time travelling, guitar-weilding totally awesome dude.

That other guy: John Calvin, a dreary preacher dude with a rather fatalistic outlook on life.

Traditional but dangerous position: Hobb and Hobbes, two tiger cubs.

Even more dangerous than the tigers: Susie, a mad Irish woman. Likes Catholicism, Republicanism, and blowing stuff up.

In recognition of Barunia's de jure title of Inspirer of names, Barunian players will wear newspaper hats as well as the requisite masks. The Inspirer of names was responsible for folding the paper hats, bringing the cups, and ignoring arguments about second base.

----

Rufus, managing director of COC-UP, surveyed the area he'd chosen for the team to play on. It was a large, grassy field, with uneven terrain and bushes, rocks, and the odd tree littering the landscape. He sighed, and turned back to the team. John Calvin spoke to him. "Rufus, I was hoping that, in light of our duties as host, I might be permitted to deliver a short sermon on the will of God. Nothing to long of course, just..."
Calvin was still speaking, but Rufus wasn't listening He was looking behind Calvin, where Susie had walked over to the various bits of sport equipment lying around. Selecting a hurley, the mad Irish woman had started to creep up on the still waffling preacher, the stick raised above her head.

Thinking fast, Rufus grabbed the nearest thing to hand and lobbed it at her. That turned out to be Hobb, and as the tiger cub flew at Susie, she batted it away with the hurley. The tiger made a high pitched scream as he flew through the air, before landing with a splash in a puddle at the bottom of the hollow.

"Points!" yelled Rufus frantically. "Well done, Susie, that's points for us! Oh look out, here come the Jecks!" It was true. The Jeckland players, realising the game has started, had run on and grabbed Hobb. Thinking quickly, Rufus grabbed Hobb's twin brother, Hobbe, and lobbed him to Susie. Whack! The tiger cub sailed through the air and went crashing in to a tree. Rufus tried to track him through the branches, but it soon became clear he wasn't coming down. "More points! He's in the tree!" The Jeckland players, hearing this, grabbed Hobb and batted him in to the tree. "Come on Calvin!" roared Rufus, running to the tree. "Up you go!" He hoisted Calvin up in to the tree to fetch the cub, then raced back to grab his own hurley.

"Come on lads, let's give them hell!" he roared, as Hobb came flying down from the tree. Whack! went Rufus' stick. Splash! went Hobb, into the puddle. Rufus grinned with happiness. The Hobbes trophy had begun, right here on Barunian soil!

OOC Sport (must be in xkoronate): Hurling
Percentage: 50%
NB: Points for all 3 moves must equal 100%
----OPTIONAL FIELDS----
IC Rule: How many times you can hit a tiger cub into the puddle. For extra points, try getting them stuck in the tree tops instead.

Important Reminder: To keep the games down to three days, both players will provide a ruleset on each day. This means all players are expected to RP on each day.

As Super-Llamaland and Jeckland did not get a ruleset in before cut-offs, the host chose a ruleset for them. The ruleset was: Football, 10%, no additional rules.

Results

Some Village Y11 and a half - 7T Super-Llamaland

Barunia 219Hippy - 50Bowly

It's that time again!

As no-one posted a ruleset, the host once again is forced to pick.

The rulesets chosen were:
1st Move - Some Village and Barunia: Athletics 200m (1 point for every second…yes, I am aware this means the slowest will win. It's Calvinball!), 20%
2nd Move - Super-Llamaland and Jeckland: Netball, 40%

Results

Some Village Cool 276 - 250 Hugs Super-Llamaland

Barunia Three Hundred and Sixeen Sixteen B - Two Hundred and Ninety D Jeckland

Running Totals
Some Village G287 1/2 - W257 Super-Llamaland

Barunia Yabba 535 - 340 Roobo Jeckland

Important Host Announcement: Cut-off for tomorrow will be delayed, as I'm working until 10 tomorrow (the end of the Cut-off period). Expect cut-off as soon as I get home, which could be anywhere up to an hour late, depending on if I get out on time.

"Na na naaaa, na na na na na na, na na na - KATAMARI DAMANCY!" Allen Byrdensky sang softly to himself. The team was faring decently well, but they needed to gain an advantage against the single-player Some Village squad.

Justin Bryant had sprinted out to the lead earlier. Unfortunately, this meant that the team was now behind, as someone had neglected to tell him it was a slowness competition. Only strong teams in netball and football kept them from being defeated by the mighty Obed. And Barunia, rumored to be a notorious member of the legendary, possibly-false Fairness in Calvinball Committee, had stopped the scoreboards from being rigged. All in all, not a great match so far.

They needed something to be changed. Allen Byrdensky thought back to the first Watterson Bowl they had won so well. Jacob Harris had fiddled while balancing on some sort of yoga ball, he remembered that. Harris was in the sidelines, wasn't he? Obed couldn't handle so many tasks at once, mighty as he was.

But it was imperative that the Barunians didn't notice. For Byrdensky was attempting to break the sacred rule of rule repetition interdiction. He was going to try to play the same way twice.

Suddenly, a flaming corona mushroomed over the field. The Llamaneans and the single player from Some Village all ducked as a voluminous fireball soared into the air and exploded into a million tiny sparks. Allen Byrdensky, the team captain, had just spontaneously combusted.

"Allen Byrdensky, the team captain, has just spontaneously combusted!" Justin Bryant screamed. "Oh my God!"

The team conferred quickly; nobody else was hurt in the mildest way. It was decided - they would fast in Allen's memory. Then somebody pointed out that was stupid, Allen loved a bit of food as much as the next man. Conferring again, they decided. A reverse fasting contest - no, not an eating contest! That's totally different!

OOC Sport: Vigil Fasting, SCORES REVERSED
Percentage: 15%
----OPTIONAL FIELDS----
IC Rule: Reverse fasting contest, NOT an eating contest
Additional Rules: Do so while being literally immersed in a pool of marshmallows.

Rufus looked at the chaos caused by the latest round. The Jecks had taken netball literally, and the place was filled with fish that they'd emptied from the two giant fishing nets they'd somehow managed to get their hands on. Where they'd gotten them from, Rufus couldn't guess, but they'd then started to lob balls into the nets. The Barunians had joined in for survival, and indeed had managed to get the better of the mysterious Jeck players. But the Field In a Small Hollow had been filled with fish, and the two tiger cubs had stuffed themselves silly.

With the cubs out of it, that left Rufus, John Calvin, and Susie alone on the Barunian side. Susie pulled out her rosary beads, intent on a quick prayer, but Calvin started to preach to her about the true biblical meaning of prayer. Rufus had to step in to stop them coming to blows, and the result was that Susie had run off in a huff and was now sitting on her own, running the beads through her fingers and praying. Calvin too had decided to pray, presumably for the soul of this heathen woman. As the two sat at opposite sides of the field, with Rufus in the middle, Rufus decided this was the perfect moment to offer up a prayer to Margaret, Goddess of Randomness and Chaos.

Unfortunately, the Jecks decided that was the best moment to surprise the Barunians by sneaking up and slapping them in the face with a wet fish. Jumping to their feet, the trio ran away from the maddening onslaught of salmon, bream, and perch, still trying to finish their respective prayers.

Who takes it? Whose cuisine reigns supreme? It's cut-off time!

Rulesets for non-posters: Baseball, ignore results of 2nd Innings, 50%

Also, because the total of all 3 percentages should equal 100, Super-Llamalands ruleset was changed to 50%, instead of 15%.

Results for move 3

Some Village P153.2 - Q97.45 Super-Llamaland

Barunia L179 - G217 Jeckland

Final Results
Some Village R440 and seven tenths - Q354 and five twentieths Super-Llamaland

Barunia 714Lollipop - 557Candystore Jeckland

The field full of fish had been cleared, but the place still smelt a bit. Rufus was glad that he'd had the foresight to switch fields for the final. Of course, he couldn't quite escape sea creatures here, as this field had been suspended by an inverted lobster. Still, it didn't smell, that was the main thing.

Rufus was glad the team had made it to the final. There position was challenged late by the Jecks, who managed to find super secret base 27. It turned out it was on a fish, which one of the tiger cubs had eaten. The Jeckish player accidentally trod on the tiger's stomach, and although he did get clawed for his trouble, the touch counted, and the Jecks got some valuable points on the board. Still it wasn't enough, and the Barunians survived to take on Some Village in the final.

"Congratulations, you've made the final."

Jumping up at down like a kangaroo that just scored the most important goal of his career - for as far as those guys were capable to do so - Obed still tried to figure out whether that wish had been sarcastic or not.

The Barunians were attempting to pass the ball around towards a net behind him, but Obed did what any man with a stick would do. He just threw it in between the legs of Rufus and hopped off with the ball in his hands. Someone waved in protest, but he shouted something along the lines of "It's not forbidden if I'm in the hands-zone!"

Susie at once snatched the ball. "That's forbid-"

She at once realised what was wrong and dropped the ball. Obed had one last chance, he knew, and he hopped towards a tree...

Rufus chased after Obed, or rather, he bounced after him. Calvin bounced in on the left, hoping to cut Obed off, but the clever Some Villager jumped over him and away.

Susie bounced up with a bow and arrows, each dart tipped with a red suction cap. Still jumping, she fired an arrow at Obed. It missed and struck Hobb, but that did not deter Susie from continuing to fire at the rapidly dodging figure.
