Format
Double round robin, with all matches either held in Mizuyuki or Electrum (Groups to be split between the two nations). There are 8 groups of 6, top three nations advancing to the round of 24. All groups will play home-and-away in their own nations, instead of last time, where they were in Electrum or Mizuyuki. Only once they've reached the finals will they go to Electrum/Mizuyuki.

At the conclusion of the group stage, teams will be reseeded, with 1-8 for group winners, 9-16 for runners up, 17-24 for second runners up. It will then be a bracket tournament, with best of three. The final will be a best of five.

Scorination Details
The latest version of xkoranate will be employed. RP bonus, as is usual, will be allocated in direct proportion to quality instead of quantity, although both factors will necessarily be taken into account when grading RPs. The grading formula agreed upon will not be disclosed but due to the nature of the rankings, roleplay is highly generous. Referring to rosters, interacting with other nations and using the available IC information will be favoured. Generally, Mizuyuki and Electrum will look to cut off at 0900 UTC, which is 8PM Melbourne time, or 5PM Malaysia time.

Tiebreaks are, in order, H2H, H2H PD, H2H PF, Overall PD, Overall PF - if the tie cannot be resolved with the above, we will resort to using a coinflip to break the tie.

How to do well in this tournament
Scores are randomly generated by a program called xkoranate, with extra bonuses given to those who roleplay. The first thing you should do is to create a roster (essentially a list of your players, coaching staff, etc.), which will give you a nice starting off bonus. Then, everyday, just post a roleplay! It can be as simple as a match report, to a TV show to an interview or a fully fledged storyline. The possibilities are endless. We understand if you don't have the time to RP, but remember the golden rule, quality is greater than quantity. Every day is a new opportunity to do well. In any case, if you do RP excellently every day, this does not mean you are guaranteed to win, just that there is a higher chance of you winning. There is always a random chance that you won't win, so blame Margaret (we hear she loves rubber chickens) -- the goddess of chance if you have any problems.

On the plane ride to Electrum, a flight attendant gives you, and your teammates a brochure all about the very nation you are travelling to, Electrum (that is, if you reach the finals).

Electrum Information

History
The country was founded by migrants escaping from civil wars multiverse wide. It is a safe haven for citizens in need. The name is derived from the vast gold and silver deposits in the great Sandy Desert in the north west of Electrum. Centralis was soon established as the capital city in 1642. The idea of living in cities quickly took hold and by the 1900s, the country was organised into provinces and into large conurbations of cities. Centralis is the oldest and largest city, having been settled first in this area of Rushmore. Slowly, the frontier lands grew larger and larger in size, as explorers found deep riches in the desert, high mountains to the west, a peninsula to the south and an agricultural delta to the east. These major centres correspond now to Hamilton, Prescott, Port Grenville and Agri respectively, and them, along with Centralis, will be the five host cities (with Kale Island struck off the list of venues after their voodoo was the reason why Electrum did not advance to the finals last time)

Accommodation and Transportation
Accommodation will be in four-five star Lodge Electrum hotels situated in each of these cities. They include all the cable television channels which are available in Electrum, including access to watching the Olympics in the Free Republics to the various other sporting tournaments which may be at the same time as the IBC. The accommodation is free, and it also features round-the-clock buffet service at the hotel's restaurants and other luxuries. Players will use a team bus, decorated in their colours to and from the airport, and to and from the venue and their hotel. The main port of call for all athletes will be Centralis International Airport, whereby there are further domestic planes to the other cities. Players may also wish to travel by bullet train to Prescott, or by normal train to the other cities from Centralis.

Weather and Climate
Of all the cities, Centralis is the most stable, in terms of temperature. It features days between 20-25 degrees Celsius, and usually has 'fine weather'. To the south, in Port Grenville, has much cooler weather, between 10-15 degrees Celsius, due to the proximity to a large ocean to it's East. In the west, Prescott is situated in the highlands, and is a hundred or so kilometres away from the peak of Electrum. Consequently, it is very cold, and at this time of year, you should expect some snowy days. To the north is Hamilton, where thanks to the mountains (which absorbs all of the moisture), it is basically a large desert. Therefore, you should expect days of 30-45 degrees Celsius, and dust storms are something to be expected. Finally, to the north-east in Agri, you should expect several rainy days, and flash floods may occur.

Currency
All transactions are conducted through Electrum's electronically-based currency system, the Synergy. Normal, paper money was abolished in 1989, after it was decided that these smartcards would be much more convenient. Nowadays, thanks to safe and secure encrypted communications networks, you can be sure your money is safe in these cards. To load money onto the cards, every major landmark and city will have machines which will convert Universal Standard Dollar, or any other major, acceptable currency into Synergy at just less than the market rate (as some money is required for maintenance of the entire system). Everyone either has a phone or a machine which is linked to the system, which makes transferring money between two cards easy.

Miscellany
The main language of choice is English, but there are several ethnic communities scattered throughout Electrum, (even those from your nation!) which may feature their own libraries, services, and other community centres in both their own language and English. Electrum is a generally inclusive nation, and you should expect to not be harassed because of your race, gender or sexual orientation. There is no national religion.

Electrum prouds itself as being a cultured nation, and so you can expect sold out concerts and gallery exhibitions in all the major cities. There is a particularly lively nightclub scene in Prescott, burning up people's hearts in the cold days there, as well as the litany of bars, taverns and combined betting centres in Port Grenville. In regards to customs and proper etiquette, they are exactly the same as you would expect in any reasonable nation.

When you enter Electrum, you will be processed by Customs staff, who will make sure you and your luggage are not a biosecurity threat to Electrum. Fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as raw meat will be confiscated, as well as untreated products (such as animal hide) and other dangerous goods. Guns are illegal to carry or possess in Electrum, and must be surrendered.

Venues and Schedule

MD1: Electrum vs Sheffland at Port Grenville
MD2: Electrum vs Super-Llamaland at Centralis
MD3: The Fair Republic vs Electrum
MD4: Electrum vs Teague at Prescott
MD5: Semarland vs Electrum
MD6: Sheffland vs Electrum
MD7: Super-Llamaland vs Electrum
MD8: Electrum vs The Fair Republic at Hamilton
MD9: Teague vs Electrum
MD10: Electrum vs Semarland at Agri

LOCATION: Deltan University of Agriculture Basketball Court

The Deltan University of Agriculture is based in Agri, a rainy and wet area in the northern parts of Electrum. It is also on a delta as well and therefore very susceptible to flooding... if that happens in Electrum. The university is ranked last in the basketball collegiate standings of the five universities, but it is definitely the one with the rowdiest supporters. The supporters in Agri often light flares indoors and will attempt to disrupt the match, and the opposing team as much as possible. The university focuses on primary industries and horticulture, both of which are important industries in Electrum.

Image
Capacity: 6,000 spectators

LOCATION: Centralis University Basketball Stadium

The Centralis University Basketball Stadium is the largest stadium in all of Electrum. It houses the Centralis Knights, the top team of the collegiate competition and is headed by legendary coach, Warren Jefferson. It is located in the middle of Electrum and the climate is temperate. This stadium is very large and spacious, but the people there are usually very kind and lovely. They are always willing to have a chat and talk sports. Centralis University is the most prestigious universities in all of Electrum, and offers various courses of study including Science, Law, Arts, etc. Centralis is a very cosmopolitan, multicultural and cultured city and you shouldn't be surprised to bump with students from all around the multiverse.

Basketball Coach: Warren Jefferson

Image
Capacity: 20,000 spectators

LOCATION:Hamilton Institute of Technology, Jane Bryson Memorial Arena

The Hamilton Institute of Technology places fourth in the collegiate competition. This memorial arena was named after Jane Bryson, the first patron of the Hamilton Institute. Since it's founding in the 1920s, it has become the go-to university for STEM subjects. Hamilton is situated to the north of Centralis and is situated on the edge of the desert. Most of the students here are very pretentious as they are usually very smart or their parent's bought a spot for them in the university. Hamilton is a very hot place, with temperatures rising to 35 degrees daily. Be sure to bring sunscreen here as the sun is very harsh. They are focused on technology as Hamilton is the closest city to the desert, where there are a lot of mining operations (for uranium, gold and silver), where the miners are very wealthy. This is why there are lots of pretentious people in a desert city.

Basketball Coach: Jack Allen

Image
Capacity: 12,000 spectators

LOCATION: Prescott School Arena

The Prescott School is the premier commerce and law school in all of Electrum. Their basketball team is third-ranked in the entire country, but people here are known more for their partying and drinking. Prescott is situated to the immediate west of Electrum and is fairly cool, given it's high altitude. Temperatures can go below freezing point at times, so make sure you stay rugged up! Prescott is in the Frontier Mountain Range and is a few dozen kilometers near Electrum's highest point, Mt. Picana where mountaineers are free to explore up the mountain. Bars in Prescott are open 24 hours a day, and you can be sure that there will be a betting shop in every street.

Basketball Coach: Paula Hobson

Image
Capacity: 15,000 spectators

LOCATION: Bayside Basketball Arena@Port Grenville

The Port Grenville Bayside Basketball Arena is the newest in Electrum and was made in preparation for the new domestic basketball tournament. As a result it hasn't been played on yet, but the WHS will see it's first use. Port Grenville is a seaside city to the southwest of Centralis on the Bellar Peninsula. It is slightly more cooler with rains more common here than anywhere else in the country. The citizens here are made up of sailors and fishermen, so do not be surprised to see them swear all the time. Aside from being potty mouths, they love a good swig of alcohol every few hours as well, so you can be sure to find lots of 'drinking holes' (taverns) here.

History
Last year, 2014, has been an excellent year for the Electrumite basketball team. They had a breakout year in their very first tournament, the 14th edition of the International Basketball Championships in Cassadaigua. A debut team, which was heavily favoured to crash out and burn in the group stage, got through by the narrowest of margins, and had to face basketball powerweights before getting to the Championship series through hard work and dedication. They would face the Sanctii, a team to be reckoned with, and they nearly went the whole way in defeating them, but they narrowly lost the championship series 3-2, in the final Game 5. Then, in the second edition of the World Hoops Showcase, Electrum decided, along with Mizuyuki to host the tournament. Electrum enjoyed the home support and cruised through to the final, where they crushed Vyktory 2-0. Then, in the next tournament, the Olympics, the women's team did not make it past the group stage, but the men's team made it all the way to the final, scoring a gold medal for Electrum.

The next tournament was to be their pinnacle for the year. Electrum and Mizuyuki once again secured the hosting rights of the next edition of the IBC, IBC 15. As all matches were held in Electrum for the Electrumite team, they were under the pump the whole way through, with some disasterous losses to teams that nobody ever heard of. The kicker? They were eliminated in the final match day by some idiot chain of islands. That was their main opportunity to finally win THE basketball tournament at home, but they couldn't. Saintland would go on to win.

Now is the time for revenge. Electrum and Mizuyuki, for the third time (after newly elected Minister Nina Spring's initiative), will host another basketball tournament, and their second time hosting the International Basketball Championships. Due to the want to avoiding disappointment at home and saving hosting costs, all matches will now be played home-and-away, instead of at Electrum and Mizuyuki, with the finals and their respective group stage home games to be held in actual Electrum and Mizuyuki. The team has undergone a revamp, with one of the coaches being sacked and some new faces in the team, with perennial underperformers given the boot. This time, they are serious in wanting to win this tournament, and will go to any means to do so.

A basketball league has risen from the ashes of the former University Basketball League (which was initially used to select candidates for the IBC), with the professional competition in Electrum being called 'The Big Six' (the former locations of the universities, with two in Centralis, and an extra team formed in Port Grenville), meanwhile the basketball league has been renamed to the more boring University Basketball League.

La Mesilla National Basketball Team
PG-Samuel Harper-Bandidos de Caborca-73”-34 y/o
One of the last remaining veterans from the first season of the MBA, Harper has been playing professional basketball in La Mesilla almost as long as the youngest players have been alive. Drafted by the Las Cruces Angels at seventeen, he has played for several teams in his tenure, but the past six years have been with Bandidos de Caborca, and he has led them to the playoffs each year. He is wily and relentless on the floor, an agile ball-handler, but age has slowed his defense some, and his reactions aren’t as fast as they once were. He has always shied from contact, and he is more likely to play the perimeter than drive in, though he will take an open lane should he see one.

SG-Jewell Todd-Tucson Demons-73”-33 y/o
Jewell Todd is a living legend, the first female player drafted by an MBA team. She was a four-year starter for the University of Tucson Lady Wildcats before the teams disintegrated. She was drafted late second round by the Miners following her senior season at Yuma and originally had trouble making the transition to guard. Since she was an older rookie, much doubt was cast on her ability to make an impact, but once she found her feet, she became a solid sixth man for the Miners and clawed her way into the starting lineup as a shooting guard. The Miners traded her to the Tucson Demons following the most recent season in order to free up cap room. She has considerable power despite her small frame and frequently draws fouls at the three-point line, as well as setting strong picks for Harper up top, but she commits fouls as well as draws them and her ball-handling could be better, both relics of having come up as a forward.

SF-Sal Hahn-Roswell Hawks-77”-30 y/o
Sal Hahn is one of the few hybrid players in a league increasingly focused on specialization, running a strong point forward game for the upstart Roswell Hawks’ recent league championship. He was originally a standout for Lordsburg High, a four-year letterman in both basketball and American football, where he played defensive end. From Lordsburg he took an offer to play at Pima College, but dropped out after his freshman year and entered the draft, where he was picked up by the Santos de San Luis and quickly made an impact. Salary negotiations led to him spending almost an entire season in free agency before being picked up by the Roswell Hawks for almost nothing and leading them to the playoffs in good form. Since then, he has been a fixture of the Hawks’ lineup, but his attitude has been a constant struggle. He is both lightning fast and highly technical, but his critics say he does not make enough free throws and does not work hard enough on defense.

PF-Cornell Clark-Bandidos de Caborca-81”-31 y/o
Clark has been a dominant big man in the MBA for the past five or six seasons, taking home regular-season MVP honors last season as part of the Bandidos squad that won the East and swept the Carlsbad Bats before falling short to Hahn’s Roswell Hawks. Clark played center for Santa Rita high school in Tucson before signing to play for the now-defunct varsity team from the University of Tucson. He was initially drafted by Alamogordo, but was quickly grabbed by the fledgling Bandidos in their expansion draft when the Rocketeers failed to protect their young prospect. Clark is a physical player in the paint and quite fond of two-handed dunks, but tends to foul more than his share on defense. He has a considerable motor that has not yet begun to wind down with age.

C-Kareem Ratliff-Alamogordo Rockets-83”-32 y/o
Frequently compared to his namesake, an American basketball legend from before the Strange, Kareem Ratliff is in direct competition with Ty Lynch for the title of best center in the MBA. He did not start playing basketball until he was nineteen and a sophomore at Pima, majoring in philosophy, and he played his first two years for the Angels while pursuing his bachelor’s at the University of Las Cruces. After completing his degree, he was traded to Alamogordo, where he has made his home for the past ten years, becoming a major icon involved with the city’s meager intelligentsia as well as its athletic circles. Frequently considered aloof by his teammate, he is nonetheless a major presence on the court, where his point totals make up for a comparative lack of defensive ability.

G-Cortez Bradshaw-Tucson Demons-74”-20 y/o
A surprising pick for this team by Coach Skinner, the youthful captain of the struggling Demons is nevertheless a capable player, full of hustle and known for playing to the last whistle. A standout at Douglas High, Bradshaw accepted a contract with the Demons the day after dropping out of Pima College, where his GPA tanked after it was revealed a female student was doing his homework for him. Bradshaw is a regular on the Tucson club scene, known for showing up to house parties the night after Demons wins. On the court, he is wicked fast and hardly tires, but his technical skills need work, and he is notorious for reaching fouls while playing defense.

G-Quincy Dixon-Tiburones de Puerto Penasco-74”-35 y/o
The oldest player on the Bronze by a year and a few months, Dixon was drafted into the league by the Tiburones in their first draft, having played his first four years for the now-defunct Las Cruces University Aggies varsity squad. He has been a dogged competitor for his entire time in professional basketball, chasing the likes of Sam Harper up and down the court night after night. He is a major presence on defense and his shooting has gotten better with age, though his lack of stamina means he is most useful in short bursts at clutch points in the game.

F-Billy Hinton-Sierra Vista Kings-78”-32 y/o
Longtime captain and constant contributor to the Sierra Vista Kings. One of the few MBA players signed directly out of high school, Hinton has played fourteen years as a starter for the Kings, and in that time has been a shooting guard, power forward, cornerman, and the team’s primary ball handler at different times. He is known to be extremely versatile, capable of scoring from anywhere on the floor, but his lack of defensive presence means he will see limited deployment as a scoring machine when the Bronze is down.

F-Mary Flowers-Carlsbad Bats-78”-19 y/o
Formerly a standout for Tohono-O’odham Community College, Mesillano Basketball Association Rookie of the Year Mary Flowers is a versatile and tenacious bigwoman who led the Bats to their first-ever playoff appearance alongside Ty Lynch. A force to be reckoned with on defense, she led the league in steals among forwards. Most of her points on offense come from converted steals, and she has a natural ability to dunk over people that make her feared among the MBA’s more masculine members. Her speed and agility complement Lynch’s outstanding presence under the basket, and fans should expect them to be deployed together during substitutions

C-Ty Lynch-Carlsbad Bats-84”-32 y/o
A longtime rival of Kareem Ratliff, Ty Lynch has been the dominant defensive center in the MBA since his rookie season, thanks in part to his seven-foot frame and almost ninety-inch wingspan. He struggled on offense in recent seasons, partly due to nagging feet injuries that are likely to shorten his career, but he should still have enough in the tank to be a difference maker in the IBC. More importantly, his chemistry with Mary Flowers was one of the major storylines coming out of the most recent MBA season, and they will look to maintain that playing for the Bronze.

The inaugural Bronze delegation to the International Basketball Championship is definitely reflective of the age and tradition of the Mesillano Basketball Association, with an average age just under 30 that is brought down considerably by the presence of the youthful Bradshaw and Flowers. Nevertheless, this team has plenty in its collective tank, and with liberal substitutions Coach Randy Skinner of the Carlsbad Bats should be able to put together a run well into the playoffs for this team.

The Dark Star Republic National Basketball Team

Team nickname: The Northern Stars
TLA: DSR
Uniform: Red with black stars

Head coaching triumverate: Yorick Stack, Donny Kirby, Caitlyn Fairchild

Squad:

#4 Oscar Pond (6’10”)
#5 Darren William (6’8”)
#6 Eli Jephson (7’0”)
#7 Buck Brook (6’8”)
#8 Gerrard Ford (6’4”)
#9 Jerome Peck (6’10”)
#10 Ross Roscoe (6’0”)
#11 William Alvey (7’0”)
#12 Earl Chapman (6’9”)
#13 Karissa Nielson (5’3”)
#14 Aston Westley (6’3”)
#15 Alex Ellsworth (6’1”)

Alex Ellsworth is a speedy slasher with a high field goal percentage for a point guard, but limited as a three point shooter and not known for gaudy assist totals. Karissa Nielson is an efficient shooting guard, whose exceptional career averages of 4+ AST/TO and 50/40/90 shooting are enough to overlook being a defensive liability. Gerrard Ford is a 3&D small forward whose outstanding wing defence typically sees him assigned to cover the opposition’s best outside shooter, though without being much an offensive force himself. Oscar Pond is a versatile power forward with a superb shooting touch, both from 3 and the free throw line, though his nickname is “Oscar Pon” – because there’s no D. Jerome Peck is a well-rounded centre, capable as a scorer and dominant as a defender, though poor at the free throw line. Coming off the bench, Ross Roscoe and Darren William are, like Ellsworth, more scoring combo guards than conventional pass-first point guards. Aston Westley is a specialist who offers 40% from 3 and little else. Eli Jephson is the most prolific shot blocker in the NBL. Buck Brook and William Alvey offer frontcourt defence and rebounding. Earl Chapman is a good passing centre.

Style modifier: +2

RP permissions: You can do whatever you want in terms of box score stats and on-court action, though I’d ask you try to bear in mind my basic player profiles. No deaths or severe injuries, no fighting or violence, no declaring war or general ridiculousness off-court. Please don’t use RL photos and say they are my players.

Cosumar National Basketball Team: IBC 16

Information

Nation - The Fiefdom of Cosumar. A constitutional monarchy renowned for its civil rights, stunning landscape, space program, and sportspeople.

Region - Atlantian Oceania

Demonym - Cosumarite

Team Nickname - Stallions

Team Style - +3. Coach Dupree likes to rotate Simmons, Sharikovich and Antonsson at point guard and in spot duty behind superstar Jakk Klyde at shooting guard. The idea is to always have a fresh pair of legs and experienced hands guiding the offense, allowing Cosumar to maintain their up-tempo style of play even late in the game. That style of play suits the current personnel, particularly with Klyde and versatile young forward Benjamin Seymour manning the wings. Klyde and Seymour both ranked among the CBA's top 10 in fast-break points last season. The Mavs have two inside presences in Ronald Savon and Antoine Arthur who can run the floor and finish. Young power forward Severin Søholt, 19, is raw and will never have blazing speed, but he’s a lethal 3-point threat with a sweet touch from anywhere on the floor, especially for someone of his size (think Dirk Nowitzki).

History - This will be Cosumar's sixth International Basketball Championships. Our first was IBC 9 in Mytannion, but thereafter we did not return until IBC 13. Cosumar has always been moderately successful in the tournament, but our first real success came here in Electrum in the last tournament, where we made a run all the way to the quarterfinals before being knocked out by #1 Saintland by the slimmest of margins. The Stallions are now ranked #8 in the world and will play their first IBC as a Pot 1 nation. Expectations are higher than ever.

Domestic League - Cosumar Basketball Association (CBA). Following the RL NBA model, the CBA consists of 32 teams with 16 in each conference (Eastern and Western). After a season of 62 games, the top eight teams in each conference will advance to a playoff for the CBA Title. Best of 7 series are used in the playoffs. Two editions have been completed to date, with the Samotath Slayers winning the first season and the Altamirano Artillery winning the second. The Cosumarite teams did not fair too well at the IUBC international competitions. Fort Archer Gorillas had the most success, advancing to the Round of 16 of the Falcon Plate.

Roster

Team Sacrifice

Chapter 1: The beginning

Murin Baskteball Arena, Murin, Estenia
Weather: Cloudy with 39% chance of rain
Hour: 17:39 or 5:39 ante meridaem
Calendar Day: 19th June 2015

The players had just returned from the international class teams and leagues, so did the managers which had to return from their world class teams too. Nizhny Novgorod, finished 3rd in the final 4, with Yuri Dobrov being the greatest player of the team and also a very good player on the Russian League. Limoge BC, won the Euro Cup, Filipp was the assist and rebound leader also a very good point scorer. Andrei Markelov of Unics Kazan helped them reach the Quarter Finals of the Euroleague with his points. Last but not least, Dmitry Ormanov of Alba Berlin, helped them reach the final 4 and take the second place of the Euroleague. Alba was so close but Dmitry couldn't score that last shot on the last 5 seconds. All the players had very good, full seasons. They had rested for about 17 days as an average. With the last league ending on June 4th which was the French LNB Pro A with Limoge ending 1st.

On the stadium all players were training under coach Vladimir Ilisovich of Panathinaikos BC, his tactic is a very balanced standard of play, with counterattacks and focusing on defence(Think of -1) and he wants his players to learn that style of play. So he starts talking

"Hello players, we have chosen you after a long season talk and you did very well in European leagues. We have chosen you because of your ability to keep the ball in your hands and of your helpful ability to the team, now I want you not to be competitive against each other and team up. This is a serious league, you've had many hours of travelling from your ountries and now you'll have even more, Electrum and Mizuyuki are far away from here and we need Qualification for a more respected ranking and in general moire respect from other countries, I know we can make it, no matter how tired we are."

and then an obvious question from Felix Juurakov

"We are tired, but the question is, how can we team up? We've been opponents for years and we still don't know each other very well."

answer from the second coach named Constantin Kustochev was

"It's very simple, it's like working with your teammates, only this time, you will communicate with nobody understanding your tactics during the game. Not even people from Wolfbenz national team, who face immigrants from our country on a daily basis. I've faced racism there, it ain't cool but if you visit Kolbenz, everything is solved, just like Kortu, very nice town, now let's go back to training."

and they started training, every tactic that the manager had to tell them and learn them before heading to Electrum or Mizuyuki, they had to learn the stayle of play, but players were very good at an offensive style of play, dunks and three pointers which could save the team (Think of +5) and so the manager decided to put that as an official tactic of the team. The players were happy enough and they had 2 more days to enjoy it.
Runner-up at the 1st OMAHAN FUTSAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, 4th at Maple Leaf Bowl III, 4th on Baptism of Fire 57, 2nd at Runner Cup 4, 3rd at 21st World Lacrosse Championships.

The Shark Tank: Prologue
The wind whipped up the beach, spraying sand in a low cloud and shaking the sides of the huge canvas tent like two flags in the wind. The sun had just started to set as Quincy Dixon stepped out the back service entrance of the tent, just underneath the huge letters that read “El Tanque de Tiburones”, visible for at least a mile out to sea. Inside was a modular basketball court set up over the sand, and portable steel bleachers enough to seat five thousand screaming fans for the La Mesilla Bronze’s first exhibition game. They had played well against Sancta Sede, a good showing for the national team’s debut, but Quincy didn’t like the crowds, so he used the exit he normally used after home games to slip off quietly into the night.

The scene outside was simultaneously chaotic and peaceful. Huge floodlights illuminated the beach, revealing young people in bikinis and boardshorts chasing each other in and out of the water and hundreds and hundreds of cigarette butts and beer cans scattered haphazardly across the sand. At the top of the dune was the Shipwreck, the bar that was the Tiburones’ primary sponsor, looking like a lighthouse spilling illumination out onto the sand. Tomorrow a small army of young children would be employed to clean the place up, and big tillers would shake up the beach so it was good as new.

Quincy had been summoned to the Shipwreck by an anonymous invitation, but there was only one person it could be. Roscoe Stone was the owner of the Shipwreck, chairman of the Tiburones’ board of directors, and the biggest crime boss in Puerto Penasco. He and Quincy were acquainted through the team’s front office; Quincy had no use for Stone, but he wasn’t someone whose invitations could be refused. He got up to the back door, moving from his shoulders to encourage people to stay out of his way, and grabbed the bouncer by the shoulder.

“Tell Mr. Stone I’m here.”

The bouncer, a twenty-something kid half Quincy’s size, turned and muttered something into his headset, then clapped Quincy on the shoulder and led him inside. Despite being the largest bar in Puerto Penasco and a front for the mob, the Shipwreck had always struck Quincy as a decent place by itself, with low tables, a wide bar, and soft music in the background. Even tonight, with the bar packed and the whole city buzzing, it still had the intimate feel of a house party on the inside.

Stone had a booth in the back corner, looking out the picture windows at the water and the huge white sides of the Shark Tank. He wore a tailored suit and a bowler hat that looked right out of a Prohibition-era movie, and may well have been; Stone and his crew had been temporally displaced from the nineteen-twenties when the Strange came, and had set up shop in Puerto Penasco amid the chaos that ensued.

“Quincy,” he said, “Great to see you. Great game tonight.”

“How would you know?” Quincy asked. He knew where Stone’s seat was, on a platform next to the pressbox, high above the rest of the audience, and he hadn’t seen his bald head there next to the other thugs that ran his franchise.

“I watched it here,” Stone said evenly, giving a sweeping gesture at the bank of televisions behind the bar. “Closed circuit.” Most of the televisions now showed the postgame show, which consisted of the coach and announcer sitting in front of a camera de-briefing the game, but one in the corner had Jungle Strike defeating Lonngeylin City in the V-League on pay-per-view.

“You think those boys hit the casinos when they was done?” asked one of the other men at the booth in a low voice, and death glares from Quincy and Stone shut him up quick.

“What do you think you’ll do when the IBC is over, huh, old boy?” Stone asked Quincy, ignoring his tablemate. “Please, take a seat, stay awhile.”

Quincy sat uncomfortably at the end of the bench, his knees pressing into the bottom of the table. “It depends on how well we do,” he said, eyes fixed on the table. “How well I do.”

Nova Anglicana Lions National Basketball Team

Offensive Style: 4 Out, 1 In
Defensive Style: Aggressive
Style Modifier (if applicable): +2
Captain: Caleb Burns
Colors: Red and White Home, Blue and White Away
Arena: National Arena (doubles as hockey stadium)
Arena Location: Londinium
Arena Capacity: 14,000
Head Coach: Raymon Guidry
Assistant Coaches: Elmo Cardwell, Nick Goodman

Roster

Starters

G #3 Caleb Burns, 5'10, 28 - dished out a career-high 7.3 assists per game in NABA last year, decent jumper but real game is driving and dropping dimes
G #17 Dominic King, 6'2, 33 - Star of the team and former NABA MVP, King can shoot, handle, pass, and play D, his success is critical to success of team
G #10 Danny Flowers, 6'3, 30 - improved defender, he can really pop the 3-ball, don't leave him open
F #24 Bryan Conner, 6'7, 34 - Conner's back-to-the-basket game is somewhat limited, but he handles and shoots well for a forward, undersized
C #44 Ibrahim Mbaraza, 7'2, 29 - Sudanese refugee is a defensive force, offense will never be truly elite, but adequate, will be tested in new starting role

Reserves
G #14 Rey Benavides, 6'4, 29 - Benavides does two things well: defend, and rebound, offensive game is weak
G #6 Clyde Pope, 6'1, 36 - backup PG knows exactly what to do at any moment, veteran presence extremely helpful off bench
G #12 Stephen Knight, 6'0, 30 - Knight is deadly jump shooter, still needs to work on his D
F #25 Cody Lewis, 6'6, 28 - fiery competitor, temper gets him in trouble, great outside shooter and defender, will see a lot of time
F #41 Kelvin Braxton, 6'9, 24 - Braxton is a tremendous leaper, has the handles to play 3 or 4-spot, needs to bulk up
F #35 Alphonse DuBois, 6'8, 31 - DuBois is a banger, plays a physical defensive and offensive game, not afraid to throw his weight around

Playing Style

Nova Anglicana is not known for producing extremely tall players, and its young history means that they've had to take what they can get as far as athletes. As such, they've adopted a quick, aggressive, team rather than a particularly big one. Their three-guard lineup often means they are quicker than their opponents, but can be mismatched on the defensive end. Therefore, they play a variety of defenses, "junk" or otherwise. Their main defenses are man-to-man and a 2-3 matchup zone, but have been known to play a trapping 1-3-1, 3-2, or a box-and-one, with Flowers chasing the opposing team all over the court. With Mbaraza now the starting center, they'll probably rely more on that 2-3 matchup zone, as he is notoriously slow of foot. They also employ a 1-3-1 full-court press, with Mbaraza to play goalkeeper in the back. Their game relies on creating turnovers and turning them into points, so they run fairly often. When forced into a half-court situation, they used to dump the ball down to former captain Gary Hale and let him work, or try to draw their defenders out of the lane so that somebody can drive. With the retirement of Hale from international play and his replacement by Mbaraza, the low post game is going to be somewhat less emphasized. Look for them to try to get Mbaraza involved on alley-oops and other plays where he's less than five feet from the basket. Otherwise, the guards are going to have to pick up much of the scoring slack. They like to run the pick-and-pop with Conner, and will run Flowers off of multiple screens to get him open for threes.

Offensive Style: Run and Gun
Defensive Style: Man to Man
Style Modifier (if applicable): +5
Captain: Prince Ioannes
Colors: Red and White
Demonym: Sanctii
Arena: Royal Square Garden
Arena Location: St. Petrus
Arena Capacity: 17,467

Roster

Starting Lineup

G: #41 Paulus Delluius - 6 feet, 4 inches
G: #14 Alessandro Delluius - 6 feet, 4 inches
F: #22 Lucas Cornificius - 6 feet, 7 inches
F: #25 Petrus Sacerdus - 6 feet, 6 inches
C: #00 Prince Ioannes - 7 feet, 2 inches

Bench

G - #42 Abraham Talmudius - 6 feet, 3 inches
G - #21 Matthaeus Acilius - 6 feet, 1 inch
F - #53 Andreas Dexius - 6 feet, 5 inches
F - #35 Georgius Dexius - 6 feet, 7 inches
C - #10 Stephanus Axius - 6 feet, 11 inches
C - #05 Davidus Sornatius - 7 feet

Notes

Prince Ioannes is the younger brother of King Petrus XX, the star quarterback for the Saintland National Gridiron Team and current King of Saintland. He is also the older brother of Prince Andreas, the former captain of the Saintland National Soccer Team. Prince Ioannes was the tallest of the sons of King Paulus XV, so he became a basketball player. He is already widely considered the best big man ever to play in Saintland's basketball league and he is the 3-time reigning league MVP. His only weakness is the 3-point shot. Although the Saintland National Basketball Team is often slow to get back on defense, Prince Ioannes is a great defensive player when he is in position. Axius is a good center, except for his poor shooting on foul shots. Sornatius is the newest addition to the team. He received a special accommodation from the University of Saintland, where he is a 3rd (final) year student, to play in this edition of the IBC. Sornatius is primarily a defensive specialist, who will see most of his minutes late in games when the Saintland National Team is trying to hold onto a lead. Basically, the Saintland National Basketball Team plays 1960s style basketball, with the center as the main scorer, but the other players will get shots throughout the course of a game. The arena's capacity is nearly the entire population of St. Petrus and the total population of Saintland is around 600 thousand. This team advanced to the Quarterfinals of IBC 12, where they were eliminated by the apple-tossers from Cassadaigua and finished 4th in IBC 13. In IBC 14, they went undefeated until the Semi-Finals, defeated Cassadaigua 2 out of 3 times in the Semis and were taken the full 5 games in the finals by a surprising Electrum team before they finally won their first IBC. While they struggled in IBC 15 and, at times, looked bored, they nonetheless managed to become the first repeat IBC champion since Sarzonia and finally secure that elusive #1 ranking. Now, Saintland comes into IBC 16, held in the same nations as the previous tournament, as the favorite to become the first nation to three-peat in the IBC.

Feministvs Sanctvsterra Basketball Team

Offensive Style: Run and Gun
Defensive Style: Zone
Style Modifier: +5
Captain: Agrippina V

Roster

Starting Lineup

G: #33 Catharina C - 5 feet, 8 inches
G: #13 Iulietta F - 5 feet, 5 inches
F: #8 Maria O - 6 feet, 4 inches
F: #12 Martha M - 6 feet, 2 inches

F: #45 Sophia A - 6 feet, 1 inch
F: #4 Lucia E - 6 feet, 4 inches
F: #20 Elizabetha V - 6 feet, 2 inches

Notes

The members of Feministvs Sanctvsterra may not be very tall, but they are very quick and are high-percentage 3-point shooters. Most of the members of this team are primarily korfball players, as that sport is extremely popular among the members of Feministvs Sanctvsterra, but contrary to popular belief, were not members of the famous Feministvs Sanctvsterra Korfball Team that was one of the dominant forces in the now-defunct World Korfball Classic. At the Games of the VIII Olympiad in Orean, Liventia, they competed and swept a group of death that also included Valanora, The Licentian Isles and Cassadaigua before falling to Footballand in a stunning Round of 16 upset.

Feministvs Sanctvsterra plays all of their matches on the road, since they are no longer welcome in the former Federation of Free Republics (now the Holy Republican Empire) and because the Holy Republicans have threatened to invade any nation that would openly provide a home base to Feministvs Sanctvsterra.
