Statement from Samuel Izmailov, BWOOC Chairman
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I welcome you to Baseton, the birthplace of the Holy Republican Empire, for the Tenth Winter Olympic Games! We at the Baseton Winter Olympic Organizing Committee have been working tirelessly to deliver the best possible Winter Olympic experience. Numerous new facilities have been constructed or renovated and it is my pleasure to inform you that all of the Olympic facilities have been finished on schedule.

We wish to thank the Church of Saintland for their generous support and for their unending efforts to make the multiverse a better place. Without their generosity, we simply could not have pulled it off.

We wish you the best of luck. On behalf of Consul Kulseth, myself and the entire Baseton Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, I welcome you to Baseton. Let the Games begin.

Samuel Izmailov
Senator from Yoriac

Temporary Host Nation Information (copied and pasted from my host bid)

Host City

Baseton is a historic city located in the northern Republic of Amolotopia. It was in the city of Baseton that the Republican Constitution was written, by delegates from the original 77 Republics. While Baseton is nowhere near as big as Falkamore, much less Petrograd, New City or Republica, it is still a major cultural and financial center. Hall Street, located in the southern part of Baseton, is famous as the home of the Baseton Stock Exchange, the most prestigious of the Republican stock exchanges.

Amolotopia has been known for its political instability in recent years. Indeed, Amolotopia was the Republic that turned to the Christian Paternalist Party in desperation, after a shocking rape case, which later turned out to have been a hoax perpetuated by the Christian Paternalist Party for political reasons. The President of the Republic was impeached and removed from office after serving over half of his 4 year term. Since the rise of the Saintland-backed Holy Party to power, Amolotopians have generally been hostile to the national government. The most noteworthy organization to have come out of Amolotopia of late is likely the Legion of Lucifer, a surprisingly well-funded organization which is dedicated to doing everything that they can to undermine the Kulseth government.

The weather in Baseton tends to be relatively cold, especially in the middle of winter. Normally, the streets of Baseton are covered in snow for most of the months of December, January and February, with below-freezing temperatures as the norm.

A privately-owned high-speed rail network connects Baseton with Amolotopia's other major city of Barkersville, where some ice hockey matches will likely take place. Additionally, a rail line to the Mt. Briard Resort will be opening prior to the start of the Games. More conveniently, several bus and taxi services operate within the Baseton region. During the duration of the Winter Olympics, they will be expanding their operations in order to take advantage of the increase in business.

Host Nation

The Holy Republican Empire is an empire that spans 4 continents and consists of hundreds of Republics. In addition, the H.R.E. has colonies located throughout the multiverse, most prominently Noburu Taiyou and Irad. Although the Holy Republican government retains its republican form, with a bicameral legislature and what are supposed to be 2 Consuls of equal power. However, due to the lack of provisions for replacing deceased Consuls in the Constitution, Reino Kulseth is currently the sole Consul, albeit with his power checked somewhat by the fact that his party only controls a plurality of the lower chamber and a minority of the upper chamber. In addition to the massive amounts of checks and balances in the Imperial Government, there is the additional check of the Republic governments, most of which are not afraid to use nullification and interposition if they are unhappy with the actions of their government.

In spite of his success in changing the nation's name from the Federation of Free Republics to the Holy Republican Empire, Consul Kulseth has been unable, so far, to dramatically change the laws of the land. In fact, most of the laws still differ, depending upon the Republic one is in. At present, the Amolotopian government, which remains under the control of the Radical Alliance, places great value on the individual's freedom of choice. What few laws on the books in Amolotopia that restrict personal liberty tend to go unenforced.

Likely the most shocking Republican values to foreigners over the years have been the nation's policies toward firearms and the nation's views regarding sexual consent, both of which tend to be dramatically out of touch with most other nations. While the latter has receded somewhat nationally, given the Kulseth government's hostility to that part of Republican culture, it remains widespread in Amolotopia. The Republican Constitution, as interpreted by the courts, effectively bans any regulations or restrictions whatsoever relating to firearms. Not only is it perfectly legal to carry (whether openly or concealed) a firearm literally anywhere in the nation, but it is encouraged.

When the Kulseth government decided to bid for the Winter Olympics, they wanted to bring the tournament to an area of the nation where the Holy Party was not particularly popular, as a gesture of goodwill. While it seems like a bizarre decision on the face of it, Consul Kulseth sees the Olympics as a means to temper some of the criticism that he receives from those who are not necessarily supportive of his party.

The Republicans have previously hosted a number of prestigious events, including a World Cup and a World Bowl. They will be receiving logistical support from their Sanctii friends, who have previously hosted major tournaments in baseball, gridiron football and ice hockey, as well as the King Paulus XV Memorial Games.

Venues

The venues used for this Winter Olympics will mostly consist of new venues, paid for by the Church of Saintland, rather than the venues owned by the disgraced Nicholls Enterprises. Most of the Nicholls venues were heavily damaged during the anti-feminist riots (which were sparked by the assassination of Consul Piazza, allegedly by a Feministvs Sanctvsterra sympathizer), by people who were enraged by the corporation's staunch support of the Consul-killers. Nicholls Enterprises Stadium and the Nicholls Enterprises Arena have been left unrepaired, as all attempts by Nicholls Enterprises to repair their venues have been met with protests and threats of mob violence.

The crown jewel of the Games will be the Olympic Stadium, which is expected to be one of the most elaborate stadiums in all of the Empire and will feature a retractable roof. Most ice hockey matches will take place inside the new Indoor Sports Palace, a massive venue that will be capable of hosting up to 4 matches at once. Other matches will take place in nearby Barkersville at the Barkersville University Arena and the Zetticci Center. This will allow for up to 6 ice hockey matches to be held simultaneously. The Gold Medal Matches for both Men's and Women's Ice Hockey will take place at the Olympic Stadium. The roof will be open during those matches, if the weather permits. The Olympic Stadium will also be utilized for medal ceremonies. Also clustered in the same area of the city as the Olympic Stadium and the Indoor Sports Palace will be the SkateDome, an all-purpose skating venue that will be host all of the skating events, and the Curling Cathedral. After the conclusion of the Games, the SkateDome will be opened to the public as a skating rink and the Curling Cathedral will be converted into a literal Cathedral, belonging to the Church of Saintland.

The remainder of the events will take place in the area surrounding Mount Briard, a mountain around a hundred miles to the north of Baseton. The Mt. Briard Resort, a popular ski resort in Amolotopia, will host all skiing and snowboarding events. Existing courses will be modified to be more suitable for use in the Olympics. Bobsleigh and luge will take place at the newly constructed Olympic Sliding Center. Biathlon events will take place on specially-designed courses located across Amolotopia, at locations that have yet to be determined. The Holy Republican Army will be designing the biathlon courses.

A lavish Olympic Village will be built in a blighted area of downtown Baseton. The Village will consist of a number of skyscrapers, reminiscent of the skyscrapers located in other major Republican cities. The facilities for athletes and other foreign dignitaries will be extremely luxurious, with all of the amenities that they could ask for. All athletes, coaches, members of the media and any other individuals in Baseton as part of their nation's official Olympic delegation will be permitted to stay within the Olympic Village.

Security

The safety of all athletes, coaches, members of the media and spectators attending the Winter Olympics will be of the utmost importance to the Baseton Olympic Organizing Committee. To ensure that all of our guests are safe, we have secured the services of the Holy Republican Army and the Holy Republican Air Force. The troops stationed at nearby Fort Stromberg will be closely monitoring for any threats to the Winter Olympics and will not hesitate to take action, as needed, to keep the Games safe. Additionally, the Republican military will not hesitate to retaliate against any group, foreign or domestic, that attempts to use the Olympics as a staging ground for acts of politically motivated violence.

This is it! The Grand British Kingdom enters international sporting world!

The Grand British Kingdom, who is the country containing sovereign states Britonisea, North Britonisea, Aloquirbe and Nightom and also the accompanied of Centreplex which is a great company opening it's businesses since 2006 and internationally in 2015. The Grand British Kingdom, full of Commonwealthians, take themselves to Free Republics where the 10th Winter Games. The 10th Winter Games is expected to have less nations that last games which was held in Saugeais. Last year, Britonisea was sent to Saugeais where they won no medals at all. The Kingdom doesn't have the best track record when it comes to winning medals in Olympic Games. The only chance that Britonisea encountered a chance of winning a gold medal was in Badminton in Kytler Bay City and Zube. Peter P Larry, who is 13th in the world for tennis but considering quitting, got knocked out by The Sarian. Here are the results.

Leandro Foster (SAR) 10 21 21
Peter P Larry (GBK) 21 18 12

It was sad. Ever since then, The Grand British Kingdom and the sovereign state of Britonisea worked together to put over 230 athletes forward for these games and hopefully, we can win some medals with hard dedication. Some of our athletes are 100% ready for these games and some have been automatically entered after winning gold in the Winter Games of The Union of Confederate Regions, but some have worked themselves too hard and therefore come to these games with almost no chances of winning.

Lord Almighty Gregory to Serve as Flagbearer at Olympics

Gregoryisgodistan's flagbearer for the Olympics was announced today, and to nobody's surprise, Lord Almighty Gregory won the vote unanimously. As a result, Lord Almighty Gregory will carry the flag into Olympic Stadium in just a few short days and show the wicked Republicans just why he is God. Following him will be the largest Gregoryisgodistani Olympic delegation ever, consisting of over 300 athletes. Lord Almighty Gregory is perhaps the best known, but there are many others with medal hopes.

In his celebration speech, Lord Almighty Gregory said "It is my great honor to carry the flag into Olympic Stadium and show those heathen fools in the Unholy Republican Empire just who the true God is. It is not Eye-ee-zus, it is I, the One True Lord. I am the Lord Your God who created the multiverse on November 5, Year 0000. That is right - I am the creator of the multiverse, which is 2,014 years old, not 6,000 as those Sanctii and Republican losers say. I will show the world I am Lord when my wife Cleffie Martinez and I win the gold medal in figure skating and 'Gregory, Gregory, Lord Almighty' echoes through the nation as our flag is raised. Perhaps King Petrus will come in second. I would love to see him cowering and pouting on the medal stand as all of Gregoryisgodistan rises as one and joins in the national anthem. Perhaps he will even boycott the medal ceremony if we win gold. If that happens, I will demand he be stripped of his medal and his pants and dickapitated and castrated by one of our delegation's many pervert chasers. Petrus must pay for all his sins."

Many of the Gregoryisgodistani Olympic athletes are Lord Almighty Gregory's loyal friends who have changed their names to things insulting King Petrus, Queen Veronica, Consul Kulseth, and other Republican and Sanctii blasphemers. For instance, Gregoryisgodistan's top ice dancing team is Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory A Bullet in King Petrus's Head Means that He Will Be Dead and his wife Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory Veronica the Queen Must Be Killed. They will be going up against King Petrus and his Queen in the event as well as in the team event. They hope to win a medal and put Petrus and Veronica in their rightful place - loserdom. After all, Gregoryisgodistan is a winning nation and Saintland is for losers. Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory Veronica the Queen Must Be Killed should not be confused with fellow figure skater Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory Queen Veronica Must Be Killed who will be competing in the pairs with her husband Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory King Petrus Must Be Killed but is unrelated to the woman with a similar name.

Figure Skaters Announce Songs to Skate To

Gregoryisgodistan's figure skaters have announced what songs they will be skating to. Now that they are allowed to use songs with lyrics outside the ice dancing, many of these songs are insulting to Saintland, the Holy Republican Empire, and other participants. Many of them are former WorldVision songs. Some songs will be used by more than one competitor. Here is the list.

Men's Individual:
Male Dancer KUUUHUUUASA:
Short - "Heathens Never Learn"
Free - "The Bombs"

Male Dancer IKEALUKCANDNA:
Short - "Multiverse"
Free - "Legalizing Slavery"

Male Dancer CHIAPETA8SD
Short - "The Executioner Song"
Free - "Ban Britonisea"

Women's Individual:

Cleffie Martinez:
Short - "Amazing Hate"
Free - "Let's Blow Up Saintland"

Lady Dancer MARUAUFA:
Short - "Gregory, God of the Multiverse"
Free - "Ban Britonisea"

Lady Dancer SNORLAX812:
Short - "Heathens Never Learn"
Free - "Do You Want to Blow Up Saintland?"

Pairs:

Lord Almighty Gregory/Cleffie Martinez:
Short - "Heathens Never Learn"
Free - "Let's Blow Up Saintland"

Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory King Petrus Must Be Killed/Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory Queen Veronica Must Be Killed:
Short - "Gregory, God of the Multiverse"
Free - "Kill the King"

Male Dancer HHHKSADKAJSFN/Lady Dancer GEUASAUD:
Short - "Multiverse"
Free - "Ban Britonisea"

Ice Dancing:

Male Dancer HSAHDNASHANSEL/Lady Dancer GEAIDKASFN:
Original - "Petrus Dead"
Free - "Legalizing Slavery"

Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory A Bullet in King Petrus's Head Means that He Will Be Dead/Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory Veronica the Queen Must Be Killed:
Original - "Gregory, God of the Multiverse"
Free - "Let's Blow Up Saintland"

Male Dancer SBDBASFD/Lady Dancer UFFBABYKEL:
Original - "The Slave Beater Song"
Free - "Do You Want to Blow Up Saintland"

The organizing committee has not yet announced what the compulsory dance will be, but everyone in the ice dancing competition will have to skate to the same song. There is speculation that they will choose an anti-Gregoryisgodistan song, fueled by their irrational hate for the True Lord, but this is unconfirmed.

State of Play
A man. Sports. Booze.

Part 1 of 3

Well, apparently, it wasn't enough for me to just walk around the Olympic Park, watch sports and generally mellow out to be paid my dues as a journalist. The Cartersburg Journal told me in no uncertain terms that they weren't paying me to have a fun time, so they sent me a brown envelope with a list of things that I had to and write about. So yeah, couldn't be too bad, maybe go for a ski with some of the athletes or go to Baseton and write about the local cuisine or dancing style or something silly.

But no. Nowhere near. Somewhere, in Cartersburg Journal headquarters, there is someone who wants to kill me. Probably Sports Editor Emily Warren*, who set these assignments. The first assignment on the sheet, to be completed in a 10 day period leading up to the start of the Olympics, was to report to an address in a village called Willow Peak, about 50km outside Crystal Springs, which is frankly, in the middle of f***ing nowhere. The only instructions were to bring winter clothes but also sports clothes. So what, skiing. How bad could it be. Amy's parents were over in Wray trying to convince themselves that the country of their daughter's husband was actually a nice place and not a cold, rainy dump, so I could go by myself to Willow Peak.

I took the red-eye flight from George Carter International to the utopian Crystal Springs Regional, which is built all of white bricks and great slabs of glass and blends in perfectly with the snow that falls 8 months of the year. I got a hire car from one of the less reputable agencies, but one which would lend me a 4x4 for 10 days without me having to pay through the nose in insurance. I took the BN73 westwards out of Crystal Springs and began the journey towards my assignment. The roads coming out of Crystal Springs vary in their quality - to the major skiing resorts of Nelforen and Eaglewood they are vast motorways, three lanes cutting through the mountain sides. But to where I was going, Willow Peak, it was one lane, which skirted very dangerously to the edge of the mountain, with only a rather flimsy looking metal barrier between me and a 600ft drop to my death. Not the most confident driver in the world, I navigated my way slowly along the twists and turns, but eventually I pulled into the small town of Willow Peak, nestled at the high end of a valley. The town had a resting population of about 3,000, but that rose exponentially when half the country poured into the Province to go skiing in the winter.

The address was 422 Masakron Drive, and I drove slowly along the main boulevard of the town, reading off the name of each intersecting road till I found Masakron Drive at the far end. It was a sleepy road, with many second homes and low-rate hotels. I rolled my car up to 422 and stepped out the car. There was a large red and white sign above the door of this particular building, and it read "WRAY CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING". My heart nearly exploded. Cross-Country skiing. Oh fuck.

I knew about Cross-Country skiing in the way that you might learn about torture, that it's an appalling, horrifying thing, but should I keep my wits about me, I shouldn't have to suffer it. I hesitantly went up to the door and rang the door bell. A few seconds went past before it opened and revealed a well-built, smiling man.

"Mr. McKenzie? The Cartersburg Journal journalist?"
"Yep. That's me."
"They told me you were taller. And less, er, well, big."
"Huh. Really? Not like anyone at the Journal to make me out to be more pleasant than I am."

The man laughed. "I'm Mat Tate, Wray Cross-Country Skiing. You know what you're here to do?"
"No, but I'm rapidly narrowing down my options. I'm certainly not here for a hot-dog eating competition."
"That you are not. Get your bags and come inside."

The ground floor of the building was a large, open-plan space filled with technical skiing equipment, as well as a kitchen space and a gym area. Mat led me upstairs to a dormitory room with 5 bunks, four of which were made up. I threw my bag on the empty bunk and came back downstairs. Two other skiers were in the kitchen making coffee. I sat down with Mat and he ran me through what we were going to do.

"The Cross-Country Skiing team is shipping out to Baseton in 12 days, but before we do, we go on our final training camp - a cross-country ski over 162km from here to the border town of Nassa. 10 days. And you're coming with us. You ever done cross-country skiing before?"

I was speechless. I shook my head. The most skiing I'd ever done was going down a red run with Amy last winter in Crystal Springs, and even then I fell over and was generally rubbish. Amy's a much better skier than I am, so I mentioned that she should be here instead of me. Mat rebutted that they told her three days before I got my letter, so no wonder she seemed so smug back then.

I was introduced to the two other skiers in the building, Uitbregeni-born Roijen Larsen who was arguably our best shot at a decent finish in an cross-country event, and Ava Sinclar-McLagan, a short, bubbly girl from Albion with frizzy red hair. I talked to them whilst Mat gathered up the kit I would need for the trip. An unusually long pair of skis was dropped in front of me, and a pair of spindly sticks. They also kindly me a helmet, goggles and a Wray CCS bib. I was told to store them all in a locker by the wall and get them tomorrow morning when we set out.

I was shown a map detailing our route through Outcountry (uninhabited land), tracking through huge woods and across the mountains until we reached the rather sad town of Nassa, which sits in a remote barren valley on the border with Nekoni. Each night we would either camp, or, if we were lucky, find one of the outcountry shacks built by the Mountain Patrols to give lost travellers shelter in the mountains. Snow was forecasted for the first half of our trip, with heavy cloud and generally poor weather all round. But in the second half, the sun was supposed to come out and temperatures might creep over freezing.

The rest of the team arrived from around the country, numbering 10 in total including me, and we went out to a local bar to have a celebratory drink before setting off from the trackhead at the top of the valley. Small-town bars like this one (The Crow and Caller on Mountclow Street, for those interested) are always wonderful and posses a quite fantastic atmosphere unable to be achieved in a bar in the city. I had a delicious craft beer, made in some tiny mountain brewery where they make 60 bottles a day and distribute them to four or five restaurants. The team also introduced themselves and we got to know each other. They all seemed like a genuinely nice bunch of people, not like other professional sportsmen and women who are high and mighty, but just down to earth. Probably a link between how good you are and how nice you are. Inverted, if you catch my drift.

Waterandearthstan alpine skier, Julia Langley -who will compete in the Giant's Slalom at the X Winter Olympics to be celebrated in Baseton- has been chosen as flag bearer of the wesians delegation. The 23 year-old sportswoman from Mountain Park said she was delighted at her recent choice to parade holding the flag of The Free Land of Waterandearthstan. The Daily Sports obtained a permit to interview Langley at her Olympic Village lodge, where she is resting before the opening day. This is an excerpt of what she has told us:

The Daily Sports: "Miss Langley, this is your first big international event in a winter sports competition. Have you ever thought to arrive at this level?"

Julia Langley: "Well, to be frank with you, when I was a little girl in Mountain Park, my father, a woodcutter born and raised in the cold north of WES, bought me a pair of skis and took me with him to watch one of the many amateur alpine ski competitions they were taking place by that time. I remembered I was thrilled by what I had experienced that day: those men and women sliding at full speed over the snow...Since then, my dream has been to become one of them, and here I am, as excited as that day".

...

The Daily Sports: "We know that you have a practice scheduled in 15 minutes, but please allow us the last question. Does Waterandearthstan have a real chance of winning a medal?

Julia Langley: "That's a difficult one. For sure we come to this games at our best, and there are some athletes like Ekaterina Frosty in the 1500m speed skating, or the ski jumper Hans Frostywind, just to mention couple of them, who really have possibilities to achieve something big. Nevertheless, we are perfectly conscious that as newcomers our main objective should remain to gain more experience for the future"

The Daily Sports: "Thank you very much, Miss langley and we wish you the best of luck"

IT ALL COMES
Shop Owner and his athletes came inot Baseton for the Winter Olympics, immidiately after a public execution of a new robber on the plane(We do that). Hundreds of Sword Bloke fans hailed their heroes  cheering innapropriate songs about other nations in the Borderlands language, and then immidiately went over to the training ground, where the hockey team was a highlight.

The team uniforms for all sports had already been revealed, all being black with red blood marks and a huge sword in the middle. The team will be showing off, as these uniforms are glow in the dark, come with red LED lights and have a cup holder. The uniforms for the owning and closing ceremony will be the ultimate, glow in the dark, red LED lights, cup holder, a internet compartment where you can play games and surf the net on your uniform, an invisible cloak button AND a fireworks eject button which prepares a fireworks show dedicated to the Shop Owner. Awesomeness in a uniform. Wate, did we say the uniforms come with a free human shield and in-uniform heating?

Cook - Welcome to this special edition of Sports Talk, I'm your host, Justine Cook. 3 very special athletes are in the Baseton Olympic Village with Angie Cameron, Angie?

Cameron - Hello! First off we have Jennifer Valenti-Gonzales of skiing. Jennifer, what has changed since Arcon?

Valenti-Gonzales - Winning that silver is nothing for me, I want to win that gold and I will do so in a clean and simple way. I'm here to win, not to toot my own horn, but I believe that I'm the best and will work hard to achieve it.

Cameron - Nice, Sheilene Singerman-Torres of speed-skating is also here with us. Sheilene, what has changed since Arcon?

Singerman-Torres - Wow, I would say the dedication and time I put into training was more that what I did in Arcon. I believe a gold is the only path to success, nothing else will suffice for me, I'm here to win. W-I-N. win.

Cameron - Jacqueline Torres-Rivera of Figure Skating is here. Jacqueline, what has changed since Arcon?

Torres-Rivera - I have won the National Figure Skating Championship in Stilwell, and hope to continue that streak into Baseton. I've got to tell you, I'm on this amazing journey and I'm so excited to continue it. Winning is key to success for me.

Cameron - Reporting live in Baseton, Angie Cameron, BMNS News.

The Raising of the Republican Flag

Although there wasn't any media on The Raising of the Olympic Flag in Britonisea last time, here is what it is. In only Olympic Events, Britonisea raises it's flag alongside the Olympic star and the host. If the Olympics were ever held in Britonisea, 2 Britonish flags will be raised and the star would be in the middle. Anyway, a few months ago, the flag of Kytler Peninsulae was raised during the games and taken off during the closing ceremony. The raising of the flags are at the highest point in Britonisea. On Thursday 8th January 2015, the flag 3 flags will rise. It is expected that 41,000 people will attend the ceremony as there are a small firework display.

The remarkable success of Kytlerian athletes at their home Games arguably formed a turning point in the nation's history. The medals table was topped, national pride became unambigously accepted, and - not unrelatedly - Varn independence was stunningly defeated in a post-Olympic referendum, after pre-Olympic opinion polls gave the "Yes" vote consistent and seemingly secure leads. The Varnian insular conservatism that was the basis of the separatist surge was dented both within Varn and beyond by the diversity of Olympic champions in green and yellow - Vephra sailor Celtuars Pazyheas, Icelandic weighlifter Sigrún Vilhjalmsson, Asian judoka Yuko Nose, archery "posh pin-up" Cecilia Blanchard-Sweet - to say nothing of other medallists such as Amohia Falaniko, the aboriginal decathlete who broke the former Olympic record but had to settle for silver.

The Winter Games in Baseton provide a first test of the durability of the new ethos. It is the first time the Kytlerians have entered a delegation to the Winter Games in three cycles - the last delegation being the one that began the ceremony in Neverend at the Kytlerian-designed Stade Grande Olympique, shortly before ski jumper Nastagus Filler was to become briefly the biggest name in Kytlerian sport with two golds and a silver. Cynics - and there are fewer of them than there used to be, in fairness - may argue that what is needed to really bolster interest is another early success, though one could hardly top Filler's first-day gold from Neverend in that regard, the unique three-way tie in the individual normal hill firmly entrenched as one of the greatest moments of any Olympic Games.

The best opportunity for a day-one medal is almost certainly in the Nordic combined event, a bizarrely compelling combination of ski-jumping and cross-country skiing - two events that seem to bear little in common but an advantage for a slight build. Naturally, Kytlerian hopes primarily rest with Dagbjört Aðalsteinsdóttir, who comes in a little heavier than most of her rivals, and uses that to good effect with a powerful takeoff. Much the same was said, all those years ago, about Nastagus Filler.

SALEVIK, RENZYNISTAN (11:00pm RST)—The Olympics season is here again, and Renzynistan is gearing up to rake medals!

The country will be sending a 269 strong-man team who will compete in the X Winter Olympics hosted by the city of Baseton, Holy Republican Empire. The delegation will be headed by Igor Coherto, chairman of the Renzynistan Olympic Committee (ROC). “The ROC is proud to announce that a total of 269 athletes will represent our country and compete in the X Winter Olympics to be held in Baseton, Holy Republican Empire”. This was the statement made by the ROC Chairman.

Athletes to watch out for are defending winter Olympic champions Maria Tukar, who won gold in the Ladies Figure Skating competition in Arcon, Saugeais, and the duo of Francis Fernandez and Meredith Gonzaga, who won gold in the Luge Doubles in Arcon. The athletes are expected to defend their respective championships.

“Of course I feel the pressure of competing and especially defending my championship”. Maria Tukar said. Tukar is one of the youngest Winter Olympian who won a gold medal at the age of 17. Now, at 21 years old, she is at the peak of her career and hopes to inspire more people.

The country has participated in 5 Olympiads, 3 Summer, and 2 Winter editions, winning a total of 37 medals which include 7 gold, 18 silver, and 12 bronze medals.

Olympics Day 1 Preview

The Winter Olympics will get underway Friday with the Opening Ceremony in Baseton, to be followed by the first day of events on Saturday. Sports TV as well as the overflow channels will be providing coverage of live or tape-delayed events 24/7, and you can watch every event live or tape-delayed on olympicstv.gs. Note that due to Olympic Council broadcasting agreements, coverage through this website is only available in Gregoryisgodistan.

Several events will be held on Day 1, including three medal events. Gregoryisgodistan will be looking to win medals and have their own anthem ring out in front of the Republican crowd as the flag is raised. The athletes will sing along and sing it strong when this happens, as it surely will multiple times during the Games.

One medal event is the men's 10 km sprint biathlon. Gregoryisgodistan has four athletes in this competition and could easily sweep the podium. Biathlon is a very strong event for Gregoryisgodistan, in large part due to the soldiers and assassins who are capable of shooting very well. All the biathletes are better at the shooting portion than the skiing portion, though they are still pretty good skiers as well. Soldier NVNSDFHSDF finished in first place in the Olympic Trials and is the best biathlete in Gregoryisgodistan, followed closely by Soldier P949DSF. Also joining them in the event are the excellent athletes Assassin ISDFIIDSF934 and Soldier JDFU88FS. It would really be something if Gregoryisgodistan were to sweep this event and three Gregoryisgodistani flags were to be raised in The Holy Republican Empire as "Gregory, Gregory Lord Almighty" rang through the air. It would really put those heathens and blasphemers in their place. They fail to recognize Lord Almighty Gregory as the Lord. Perhaps after the medal sweep, they will.

The women's 15 km skiathlon also will be held on Saturday, with three rather average skiers competing for Gregoryisgodistan. Slave Catcher UUUDMAYULELOG, Slave Catcher SNANDNSASU, and Lady Soldier DAIRYCOW will all compete for the Gregoryisgodistanis. They are expected to finish in the middle of the pack, and anything higher would be impressive. It is unlikely any of them will win a medal.

Matchday 1 of the women's curling and men's ice hockey will also be held on Saturday. The curling team is not expected to be competitive, but the ice hockey team is the gold medal favorite. The only problem is that the World Cup of Hockey is expected to start around the middle of the Olympics. This will force the Gregoryisgodistani team to fly back and forth between the Olympics and their WCoH sites until the former is over or the Ice Slaves are eliminated. This may be difficult on them and require airport hell, but it will be worth it to win both tournaments.

In figure skating, the team trophy will get underway on Saturday with the ice dancing compulsory dance and team pairs short program. The latter provides our first look at Lord Almighty Gregory in a competitive event, as he will be dancing with his wife, Cleffie Martinez, who he kidnapped but who later fell in love with him truly. The ice dancing will feature Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory A Bullet in King Petrus's Head Means that He Will Be Dead with his wife Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory Veronica the Queen Must Be Killed. They have changed their names just to provoke the Republicans and Sanctii. Gregoryisgodistan is expected to be a medal favorite in this event, but they cannot win a medal in it on Saturday. It takes several days.

Luge will feature runs 1 and 2 of the men's singles competition. Horse Beater LPSD9ASD8AFSJDF is considered a dark horse to win a medal (ha ha ha) while Soldier BAVAKALAKA91 and Slave SF8DSFKSAD8248 likely have no chance. Slave SF8DSFKSAD8248's master was nice enough to let him compete. Should he win a medal, he will be liberated. However, should he finish last, he will be executed.

The final medal event of Day 1 is the women's individual normal hill/10 km nordic combined. Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory We Killed Consul Piazza is widely renowned as a medal favorite and she could easily win the gold medal. She has changed her name to honor the fact that Gregoryisgodistani assassins assassinated Consul Piazza of the Free Republics. Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory Saintland is Evil also has medal hopes. Slave TURKEMABADU and Slave 8248ASHFAB848883488ADABD were sent to fill up the quotas. They won't win.

But there are also non-medal events that will award medals later. The women's 500 m heats and women's 3000 m relay heats will be held in short track. Gregoryisgodistan does not have any real medal hopes in either event, but short track is so unpredictable so you never know. Anything can happen. Anything at all. Maybe one of them will reach the final against an Unholy Republican, a Llamanean, a Patistani, a Britonish fool, and a Guayabalian, and those Enemies of the Lord will all crash into each other and fall, allowing our competitor to win the race after she was way behind. It could happen. We shall see.

The news...today!

Team entry the main talking point ahead of Opening Ceremony

Over a hundred athletes will compete for The Dark Star Republic in their first venture into Olympic sport, with a team for the historic Tenth Winter Olympiad in Baseton, Free Republics. They will be led by cross-country skier Tara Suggitt at the opening ceremony, though thus far most discussion has focussed on when they will enter.

The delegation is scheduled to enter after Taeshan, as the first "The" nation, ahead of The Grand British Kingdom. However, Dark Star sports teams have always considered themselves to be listed as "Dark Star Republic, The", and hence the DSOA has filed a late motion for a change in order, to enter ahead of Darmen, after Cosumar. While it is unlikely the NSOC will have time, or inclination, to consider such an appeal, Dark Star athletes on the ground may try to informally negotiate with event organizers anyway.

Regardless of when they enter, it will be an historic moment for Dark Star sports. Competition has previously focused on single sport competitions in baseball, ice hockey, and most notably basketball, with DSOA officials admitting that the ongoing International Basketball Championship is likely to draw more public attention than the Olympics.

Without a strong winter sports tradition, medal hopes are considered to be slim, but there are chances in women's biathlon, sliding sports, and aerials skiing. It is likely that for Dark Star athletes the experience of competing will be the main interest, though the DSOA has set a notional medal target of two medals, including one in sliding sports.

Laiatanese Olympic Team to make debut

The Laiatanese Olympic Team is about to make its first Olympic Games debut in the X Olympic Games being held in Baseton, Free Republics. Waves of fans have already begun entering Free Republics, excited to see the best athletes in the Federation compete on the world stage.

The Olympic Team will be led at the opening ceremony by snowboarder Aleksi Zaytsev, who in a recent interview said that he was "very excited to carry Laiatan's flag into the arena." A little more than one hundred athletes from all over Laiatan will be representing the country, and fans both at home and here in Free Republics are ecstatic to see their athletes. High hopes have been placed especially in the men's and women's national hockey teams, made up of players from the top professional hockey league in Laiatan.

Eyes are also on figure skating couple Artyom and Valentina Bok, who have dominated the figure skating circuit in Laiatan for the past three years.

Overall the country's hopes are high that they will win at least a few medals in its debut, thanks to large mountain ranges and a cold climate in the northern half of the country, and a tradition of several of the winter sports included at this year's Winter Olympics.

With One Week remaining before Convention of the Combined Legislatures, Second Communists deciding who will be next Prime Minister
Peari quiet on who he wants as successor, Deputy Prime Minister Bram Hayes considered front runner
Image
Deputy Prime Minister Bram Hayes (l), is expected to replace Scat Peari as Prime Minister.
Forestry Minister Hróarr Parent (r), could become the new Deputy Prime Minister.
Thousands of politicians will gather on next week on Thursday and Friday in the capital for the annual Convention of the Combined Legislatures. While the Prime Minister's State of the Nation and the Duke's State of the Rechom addresses are normally the most anticipated and talked about events of the Convention, the election among Second Communist MP's for Scat Peari's replacement has clearly been dominating the conversations of citizens throughout Darmen.

Scat Peari will give his final State of the Nation address on Thursday night. The address will be broadcast live on DBC at 10pm, and it is anticipated that millions of Darmeni's will watch. Peari is expected to spend much of the address reflecting on the past four years, most of which he has spent as Prime Minister.

Friday will conclude with the Duke's annual State of the Rechom address, which is expected to highlight many of the good things that have happened in Darmen in the past year.

Friday morning however will be the main event, as all 305 Second Communist MP's will elect the next Prime Minister of Darmen. Current Deputy Prime Minister Bram Hayes is expected to win handily. At 52 years old he would be the youngest ever Prime Minister of Darmen. However, Hayes' main contender, 33 year old Environmental Minister, Zebedaios Cantu, would be an even younger Prime Minister. It is unlikely however that he will be elected.

Peari has refused to comment on who he wishes to replace him as Prime Minister, stating only that he hopes his replacement will "keep Darmen on the path of progress and avoid a collapse of the Commonwealth." A collapse of the Commonwealth, while still unlikely, is something which has become a real possibility with the creation of the Esportivan Union and plans for a referendum in Earo on whether to join.

Following the election and preceding the State of the Rechom address, Peari will officially resign from Parliament and will look on as Paula Cassano is sworn into Parliament by the Speaker. In addition, four other members of the Cabinet will resign their ministerial portfolios will retaining their membership in Parliament. They are:
  • Calixte Huff, 77, Minister of the Interior
  • Ludger Fitzsimmons, 84, Minister of the Treasury
  • Yared O'Connor, 74, Minister of Education
  • Sammuel Roberts, 72, Minister of Royal Affairs

The newly elected Prime Minister will likely take a few days to name the replacements for what will become a very different cabinet. They are all expected to be younger members of the Second Communist Group.

It's Crowded In Here
Reporting for V3 News Services, Rin Slakori

BASETON - It wasn't too long ago that the only nations from The East Pacific competing in the biannual Olympics was Kelssek, Vulshain, and Vekaiyu. Back then, back when Vekaiyu first competed, Kelssek had already established itself as an Olympic powerhouse. But in the five years Vekaiyu has participated in these worldwide events, it too has become a powerhouse... for the summer games only. Indeed, the Ninth Winter Olympics was the nation's worst showing ever, coming in at 40th overall. This came on the heels from a 22nd showing in the Eighth Winter Olympics - the nation's second worst Olympic performance. Can Vekaiyu turn it around this year? Or will it continue to regress and remain a summer nation only?

"We really have a lot to prove this year," skeleton athlete Salvatoro Okanuvi informed V3 News Services. Salvatoro won bronze last year in the men's individuals. "This is kind of a make or break time for many of us. We don't like losing just as much as the nation doesn't like us losing. We know we're good. We know we're capable. But, let's just face it, sometimes all the practice you put into these games doesn't pan out."

"I hate to sound cliche, but we're not exactly as popular as, say, swimming in Vekaiyu," luge competitor Selvala Akayemestri added. "We don't get the breakfast cereal commercials or the state of the art suits designed in some lab. But we do what we can." When asked if she believed she was ready for this year's games, she replied, "of course. I wouldn't dare show my face here if I felt I was not at my highest level."

The frustrations in the Vekaiyun camp caused many of the younger athletes to "jump ship" and help field a Listonian team for the first time. While there are a few Listonian athletes in their numbers, the majority are Vekaiyu, especially in speed skating, an event that features many good Vekaiyun athletes but so far has netted the nation a total of zero medals. Joining the Listonian team isn't as easy as one would make it out to be. Listonian equipment is not necessarily known for its durability or its quality. Indeed, most of it reportedly came from outdated and overused Vekaiyun training facilities from the 1980's.

"You make the best of it," young speed skater Xa Inglastre told V3 News. "Let me say this, though: I just want the chance to compete. I'd love to represent my own nation, but the way things were going [in Vekaiyu] I was never going to get a shot anytime soon. Plus the Listonian people could use something to cheer for. I hope I can deliver."

To play off the recent media and sports pundit portrayals of these Vekaiyun citizens working for Listonia, the speed skaters have incorporated a Jolly Roger inspired flag to their uniform, complete with a vulpine flag. It will be interesting to see how both nations respond to these bold athletes.

But these games are so much more than just Listonia joining the fold. Indeed, British Grand Pacific, Laiatan, and Trnavania have joined the games this year as well, along with perennial contender Kelssek, making a total of six nations competing for these winter games. Vulshain, a nation that has enjoyed a rivalry with Vekaiyu for years, is again not present for these games. But the number of nations from The East Pacific will definitely make these games one to remember. Which nation will come out on top? Will Vekaiyu turn things around for the Winter Games? Will those Listonian speed skaters show their Vekaiyun counterparts how it's done? What about the ice hockey clubs from Laiatan and British Grand Pacific? Will they dominate much like they have over in The East Pacific Realm?

Time will tell. But if it's any consolation, perhaps this newfound interest in the Olympic Games will give those Vekaiyun athletes that extra competitive edge they will no doubt need this time around. Here's to 39th or better, right?
"Your uniform doesn't seem to fit. You're much too alive in it."

Listonia Welcomes First Athletes
Reporting for Listonia Sun, Viktor Uleskegori

A total of twelve athletes consist of the first national Listonian Olympic Team, bound for Baseton in the Republic of Amolotopia. These athletes will make history as the first international athletes competing under the Listonian banner. All athletes have become instant superstars in a nation that has made great strides over the past year in terms of security, trade, and stability. It would be even more fitting to see this great nation earn a medal at these international games.

Premier Stapen Evesuni gave the athletes a warm sendoff prior to the athletes boarding their plane in the Listonian capital of Ye'leli. "This was an impossible dream fifteen years ago. We weren't even a state. We didn't even have any kind of representation. It took us five years to support a team for these Olympics. Nothing in Listonia is ever truly easy, but we do everything to the fullest extent of our abilities. Regardless of where you all finish, you bring all of us great pride. For these several weeks, allow us to make you a part of our lunch conversations, our news programs, and our families."

The team consists of two humans (Pawel Sikulikov and Frankyo Iligastro) and ten vulpines. Of those ten vulpines, six are defectors from Vekaiyu - all of whom are speed skaters. These skaters have made Listonia their home in the short time they've been a part of our team, no doubt, and will most certainly provide the strong competition our nation is looking forward to. In addition, strong figure skaters Temotu Legavensu and Ankya Guligasi are also potential competitors for medals.

"It's kind of bizarre," Ankya Guligasi said of representing Listonia, "we always talked about fielding a team. I'm glad we are able to compete this year. It is my sincerest hope that I can win a medal for my people, Father Evesuni, and the Almighty. It would be a dream come true, but I do not know what to expect. I just hope I can bring honor."

To facilitate the viewing of these Olympic games, aquatic arenas and other sports venues will play highlights of the day's events for those who do not have access to television or those who simply want to enjoy these historical moments in a social setting. The mayor of Ye'leli, Riyna Soliviko, has said that the city is set up such that "no citizen in Ye'leli should have an excuse not to see the events."

We as Listonian citizens hope that our competitors demonstrate the never-say-die attitude of the Listonian spirit and bring glory to their countrymen at home! May our athletes bring glory to the Vekaiyun Union!

Olympic Hopes Rise in the East

BASETON - With 187 athletes and nearly 250 officials and support staff, Team BGP is set to make its debut on the international sports scene this week in Baseton. After years of cheering for perennial East Pacific Olympians Kelssek, Vekaiyu and Vulshain, Governor-General Marcus Sydney announced enough was enough. "The Grand Pacific has her fair share of world-class athletes and it's time to be their fans and bring a bit of glory home for ourselves."

The previous year has been a flurry or excitement and preparation as the nation established its first Olympic Committee and set about the task of setting trials, benchmarks, and seeking athlete and sponsor alike. "Of course there will be growing pains and a learning curve, but it's worth it." states an enthusiastic Elaine Koch, chairman of the fledgling committee. "The hardest part is behind us now. We have hundreds of incredible athletes wow us as they fought for a spot on the team, and we've seen equal excitement from the corporate world as they embrace these young men and women. It's a definite win-win for the nation."

Some interest is being given to the Laiatanese, Listonian, and Vekaiyun delegations. Earlier this year the Grand Pacific entered into a defense pact with each of those delegations called Kerilo. There are high hopes that a strong showing in the winter games will strengthen ties further. Mr. Sydney summed it up, "These games will herald in many more years of peace and prosperity for The East."

This is obviously not a slight at anyone/nation mentioned in this piece, and is from a gossip section, so some sections may be downright incorrect. She is an investigative reporter who was secretly there at the drawing. All spelling mistakes are intentional (i.e. Izmaleov, Izamailov and some others). Obviously all of this comes from the IRC records.

Now! - Gossip Section - Annette Rivers

EXCLUSIVE: What they didn't want you to know in the X Winter Olympics draw!

Imagine this - a whole auditorium filled with ten people. Yes, just ten people. It was the saddest sight anyone had ever seen ever, and Samuel Izmailov (Chairman of the Olympic Comittee) was sitting all by his lonesome in the front of the auditorium, in preparation of the draw for the groups in the Olympics. It was as if the other teams had already decided to give up competing in the Winter Olympics and decided to go home. Now you may be wondering, what was a gossip guru like me doing at some sporting draw? Isn't that for men? Nonsense, these places are the hotbed of creepiness, bribery and gossip! You gals are always asking for some more gossip about sportsmen, so that's what you're going to get!

Even Lord Almighty Gregory, the hottie, was in attendance. Beside him, the Electrumite representative Maximillion von Trier (who is known for his eccentric clothing style and personality in general and is also the chef de mission for Electrum in these Olympics), a San Jose Guaybalian, a sentient Llama, a disinterested Vekaiyan, a Transalpine Republican and a British Grand Pacifican. Literally. (Oh and some other randoms from nations not even competing in the Olympics! What is up with that?) Only a few of them in the draw auditorium. You just had to feel pity for these people. And the host came twenty minutes late! That, is just so wrong! I mean, imagine going to an important appointment twenty minutes late! I would be so embarrassed. It was ridiculous too. Senator Izmailov was walked in by three womenly escorts (OOC: she heard the word escort, but not military escort) who were kissing each other on the lips! "Holy" Republican Empire, right? These are some of the juiciest stories I have ever seen, ever! You must definitely read all of them, if you want to be up-to-date with who's who in the 'famous' world!

ADORABLE SWEETHEART, AND TILL LOVE DO US PART: While at the drawing ceremony of the tenth edition of the Winter Olympics, Lord Almighty Gregory was seen talking to Electrum representative Maximillion von Trier! Lord Almighty Gregory confirmed that he was going to be competing with his wife, Cleffie Martinez! Yes, the couple had the most unlikeliest of starts, she was formerly Youth 92477AZY, but she was adorably snatched by the Lord Almighty, where he changed her name to Cleffie Martinez, and yes, we hear it was love at first sight! What an adorable name! He then made her play tennis and do ice skating with him in the Olympics! Now that's just romantic! They will both be competing in the ice skating tournament, together and separately, and the hope is they win a medal! They will be competing forever and ever, until Lord Almighty Gregory dies, in which case, she will die too to prevent her from knowing the dangerous secret of how the country is ruled! To die to protect a secret... that is truly the best way to die.

ENTRANCE WITH A BANG: Things do get saucy when things get heated up! Like when you make gravy for example! Anyways, when Senator Izmailov entered the auditorium with his risqué escorts, the Lord Almighty Gregory himself said Izmailov's name wrong! Izmailov had the most funniest of quips, and said that, "Looks like somebody needs to go to one of his own Spelling Reeducation Camps." ZING! But it looks like Lord Almighty Gregory had the last laugh, saying that "I was mocking you ... nobody cares if you spell heathens' names wrong." Also, I don't think Lord Almighty Gregory noticed this mistake made by his opponent, but Reeducation is not a word. Re-education is (I checked on my word processor, and there's a red squiggly line underneath). Senator Izmailov might need to consult a dictionary (Is his name misspelled too?). Electrum's Maximillion von Trier silenced both of them, saying that they needed to hurry up because he needed a manicure.

THE MAN BEHIND THE MANICURE: Maximillion von Trier is a fashion extraordinaire! This fourty-year old man, who wore bright yellow and silver clothing wasn't afraid to strut his stuff in front of the others. In fact, he had a specially designed catwalk at the auditorium, so that he could show his fashion to the others! This guy pulls no stops on his manicures, and he was spotted leaving the draw, going to a nail salon across the road, asking for his nails to be painted alternately blue and yellow! He has the most bravest fashion sense I've ever seen, and people should commend him for that. He is immensely patriotic, shouting out "WOO! ELECTRUM!" and "YEAH! WE'RE IN SEMI A, THAT MEANS WE'RE A!" whenever he heard so much as the letter E from Senator Izmaleov. He was seen later petting a llama, which was completely sentient (representing Super-Llamaland, of course), but it died when it was shot by a tardigrade gun. Serves the llama right for being sentient!

A DEAL PERFECTLY EXECUTED
The Electrumite representative was seen walking up to the front of the stage whispering a few things to the chairman of this event (We've said it multiple times, it's Senator Izmailov). There was an exchange of briefcases, and von Trier sat back down. When we ambushed him later on when he was going for a smoke, he said that, "I have no idea what you are talking about! There was no money in that suitcase! I was just giving him... my business details! That's all!" Suspiciously specific denial? Maybe. But, later on in the draw, when Senator Izmmmailov drew Pot 3, immediately before Electrum's group, Senator Izmailof actually looked when he was fishing balls for the balls out the machine, and picked that nation specifically! No-one saw it, except for me! He then winked at our representative and said, "The Sword Bloke". (OOC: Obviously, it was a random number generator that spit out the groups).

SAN JOSE GUAYABAL REPRESENTATIVE CAUSES HAVOC
Who ever thought it was a good idea to invite a representative from San Jose Guayabal should be shot. They caused so much havoc, I don't know where to begin. They started by lighting flares everywhere, then prepared some rifles, and then gave some opium to the British. Then, they had the audacity to attempt to give beer to the Senator! Just what on earth were they thinking? And then, at the end, when Senator Izmailov left the room already, the San Jose Guayabalan representative was so deluded that he shot at where the Sentor had been standing, trying to make said senator "rest for the eternity." Truly horrific that these elements are part of the Olympic community. I think he was drugged by the very drugs in the beer that he tried to offer the Senator during the draw.

QUICK QUOTES
Below were the cracker quotes that we heard!
"Burn LordAlmightyGregory|GGS!"
-San Jose Guayabal representative

"and Slave Catcher 88ASUDANSD/Slave MMMMA883 (GGS). That last one must be a misprint. You see, slavery is illegal in the Holy Republican Empire..."
-Senator Izamailov

"Why couldn't I have been elected Consul instead of being stuck in charge of organizing the Olympics?"
-Senator Izmailov

"All of them in the 'first pot' bah! They've never won an Olympic medal in curling"
-Maximillion Von Trier

"In Group C, the Sanctii will join Isula Gay Whatever and British Grand Pacific"
-Senator Izmailov

"Please, we don't want a drunk Izmailov"
-Maximillion Von Trier

GROUPS DRAWN, SOME FAVOURABLE OPPOSITION!
The Sword Bloke have got some favourable opposition in their Curling & Ice Hockey groups, getting into Group H in Men's Curling and Group B in Ice Hockey. The Wings, as the national sides are forced to be called, aren't in exactly easy groups, with the Wings to play against a Electrum and Gregoryisgodistan, among others. Shop Owner, the team's Ice hockey captain and flagbearer, isn't going easily about the groups.

It was difficult for the crowd attending the Opening Ceremony of the X Winter Olympic Games in Baseton, Free Republics, to have missed Waterandearthstan Prime Minister, Linda Cielsereno, as she was jumping up and down with joy the moment, Julia Langley, flag bearer, and one of the biggest hopes to grab a medal in this Games. Mrs. Cielsereno who was wearing a scarf with the distinctive Community Football World Champions, got very excited with the first ever appearance of a Waterandearthstan delegation in such a big sporting event.

With the Olympic competitions schedule already set up, experts, analyst and commentators of every variety, filled this morning the WST Sports 1 studios to make their opinions heard. Tomorrow our Women's curling team will be sliding over the ice in the opening match of group E, in which they will cross paths with Electrum, Isula ge Ru, Slavic Union, Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland, and Paripana Soprting Council.

Both wesian's trainer and skip, Peggy Reed and Jenny Kim respectively, overtly admitted that they don't know much about these team's tactics and strategy. "As a team we have the necessary flexibility to bend our tactics according to an specific situation, but we feel at ease playing aggressively and trying to place as many stones as possible in play. Nevertheless, that can be adjusted depending on which team has the hammer" Peggy Reed declared to this newspaper. Other wesians involved on the first day of competitions are Figure Skater pair Vivian Wheeler and Kathleen Zimmermann; luge's only representative, Charlie Maynard, and Men's Ice Hockey team. To all of them the best of luck

SHOP OWNER DAZZLES AWAY
Shop Owner, our Ice Hockey captain and flagbearer, dazzled The Sword Bloke's representives gives into the Olympic Stadium, with the side wearing jackets that come with red LED lights, as every assistant was forced to clap for the side. Delegate Krump, the teams delegate, stated 'This is the moment our rough run in international sport ends, we are all going to do it for the nation and show that public executing rules.' The Sword Bloke is coming from an extremely disappointing sporting week, being eliminated from the Venecan Shield by goals scored and also placing 9th in Community Football.

A capacity crowd of well over one hundred thousand spectators from all over the multiverse crowded into the newly opened Olympic Stadium in anticipation of the Opening Ceremony for the 10th Winter Olympic Games. The most shocking spectacle, for foreign visitors, must have been the number of Republicans who arrived at the stadium armed with military-grade weaponry. The Republicans in the crowd were so heavily armed that it would have been difficult to tell the police and military personnel apart from the civilians, had the police and military personnel been in street clothes.

Another noticeable presence at the Opening Ceremony was the massive contingent of priests, monks and nuns from the Church that referred to itself as the True Church of Iesus Christus, but which was commonly called the Church of Saintland. The Church had not only paid for most of the Olympic venues, but was also very closely connected to Consul Kulseth and the Holy Party, paying for well over 80% of the party's political costs, including most of the campaign costs for the Consul. In exchange, the Church, which was a de-facto subsidiary of the government of the theocratic Rushmori kingdom of Saintland, was rewarded with the backing of the Republican government and all of the advertising that it desired. The Church of Saintland had paid most of the costs to run these Olympics, but now they intended to reap some return on their investment, on one of the largest possible stages to promote their message, which was largely unchanged since medieval times.

While the Olympic Stadium had a retractable roof, Church of Saintland officials were insistent that the roof had to be up during the Opening Ceremony, exposing the crowd to the freezing cold of a Baseton winter. Fortunately, the weather forecast cooperated, leaving the skies clear at the time of the Opening Ceremony.

The Opening Ceremony began with the playing of the Republican National Anthem, which remained Republica, the Gem of the Oceans in spite of efforts by Consul Kulseth to change it to the Battle Hymn of the Republics. The only change to the National Anthem that had been approved was changing the word "Federation" to "Empire" in the line "The Federation, the Federation forever."

The focus of the Ceremony itself, in sharp contrast with traditional Olympic opening ceremonies, was not on the Holy Republican Empire, but rather on the Gospel story. A lengthy Ceremony followed, set to a number of songs in a popular style but with religious-themed lyrics. In the center of the stadium, the spectators witnessed the Birth of "Iesus," the major events of his life and ministry and, of course, the betrayal by "Iudas" Iscariot and the crucifixion of "Iesus" by the wicked authorities. As he was being crucified, Zurie Tanguay's song God's Will blared over the stadium speakers. Everything seemed to be going according to plan until, for some reason, the song Dying Land began playing during the Resurrection, to be followed by Amazing Hate, rather than Amazing Grace.

On the edge of the stage, Consul Kulseth, Patriarch Nicolaus V and Chairman Izmailov of the BWOOC could be seen panicking and trying to figure out what was happening. Nearby, Sister Polus, the Sanctustube celebrity, could be seen already taking notes for her next video where she would speak about how outraged she was. Finally, Consul Kulseth made a phone call and, suddenly, the music cut out. At this point, the big stadium screen showed a message, which read "This Propaganda Ceremony has been h4x0r3d by Feministvs Sanctvsterra! Down with the Church of Lies. Fuck the Patriarchy!" A moment later, the screens were shut down and spectators who were checking their cell phones noticed that their phones had been jammed and all Internet connectivity disabled, but the organizers of the Opening Ceremony attempted to move forward, as if nothing had happened.

At this point, the Parade of Nations commenced, starting with Bears Armed. The first few delegations received either polite applause or no reaction at all from the partisan Republican crowd. Notably, Capitalizt SLANI was skipped over as Chiata followed Britonisea. However, the crowd came alive with the introduction of Electrum, a nation which had accused the Republican National Soccer Team of match-fixing just days earlier. Although the Consul was in the process of nationalizing Rule Theriault's team, for the moment, Theriault remained in control of the National Team and the Republican public did not appreciate the accusations that Theriault fixed matches, even though everybody who hadn't been living under a rock for the past 5 years knew that to be the case. Electrum were booed out of the building, but the reaction was nothing compared to the one that Gregoryisgodistan received. The Gregoryisgodistani delegation's entrance was met with chants of "Gregory is no God" and "Co-Co-Nut" from a crowd that absolutely loathed the south Esportivan dictatorship. Several Gregoryisgodistani athletes seemed like they were going to respond to the heckling with violence, but seemingly every police officer and soldier in the stadium pointed their firearm at Lord Almighty Gregory, making it clear what their intentions were if any violence were to break out.

The following entrances were met with much less interest from the crowd. The 3 major stories of this part of the Parade of Nations were Capitalizt SLANI being permitted to march with the Paripana Sporting Council, Roumberre being followed by San José Guayabal and the hosts of the previous Winter Olympics, Saugeais, marching in the middle of the Parade of Nations in an apparent snub. After Wray entered, finishing up the alphabetical list, the delegation from Saintland was the second to last to enter. The Sanctii were led by King Petrus XX, their King, who entered carrying a cross. The King had elected to boycott the upcoming World Bowl, to be held in the Equestrian States, and instead compete in figure skating, with his Republican-born Queen Veronica, at the Winter Olympics. In a statement, directed at critics of Saintland's policies relating to women's issues, Queen Veronica, not her husband, carried the Sanctii flag. The Sanctii delegation were greeted with applause by the crowd, a sizable number of whom were from Saintland. Finally, the Republican delegation entered, led by their flagbearers Francine van Gemeren and Rosa Stromberg, both of whom had won Gold in Arçon. The women of the Republican delegation had their heads covered, in accordance with the teachings of the "True Church" and were dressed elegantly in dresses reminiscent of those that were fashionable in Baseton at the time of the Constitutional Convention (1767). The men, for their part, were dressed in 18th century-style Republican military uniforms.

The Republican entry was followed by the usual Olympic-opening speech from Samuel Izmailov, just more long-winded than usual. Izmailov rambled on and on about the Olympic spirit and about how happy he was to see the Olympics in Baseton before turning his microphone over to Consul Kulseth. The Consul gave a 15-minute speech of his own before finally stating "I hereby declare these Tenth Winter Olympics, held in the historic city of Baseton, the first ever in the Holy Republican Empire, officially open." Following that statement, a legendary Republican (gridiron) football player handed the Olympic flame to Patriarch Nicolaus V, who slowly walked up to the torch and lit it. Fireworks shot off as the Olympics had officially begun...

The Olympics will start. Kriegiersien public media doesn't show any pictures. All rights for transmissions and Streams are in the hand of private C&P NET-TV.

The greatest hurdle in the 'Qualification' for the Olympics was this time the money. Devastated by endless civil wars and missmanagement, Kriegiersien is a military powerhouse in theory, but technological aback and even more isolated then before. Mysterious barriers lie like a shroud above the country, making every military conflict with other nations impossible.
So the Olympics are the only possibility to duel and fight with other States. But even for that no shiny thing was left.

Crazy enough, with all the intern horrors like zombies, hunger, inflation and bad TV-Shows going on, there were no internal qualification tournaments for the Olympics.
But thanks to the sponsoring from the powerfull Minimax clan, who sends his family members and the mighty Syndicate C&P who gave the money for the other athletes to be able to travel to the Olympics, the exact same people like the last time are competing at the Olympics for Kriegiersien.
And it seems that no one ended his career, died, got ill, lost his skill or got better. A true wonder.

There was no word from the President of Kriegiersen, from whom wasn't heard of for eternities, the whole thing seems to be some (even more) scary "corporate thing" now.
