Season Review 1: All Things Sports Mapletish

Postby Mapletish » Fri Jul 06, 2018 10:05 am

The Sour Kind
"I only know one thing, that is I know nothing"

Commentaries | Timothy Jozua

A lot has changed in the Mapletish sports scene for this season. Firstly we take a look at the current number of professional sporting clubs in Mapletish. Before this season started, the number of sporting clubs in Mapletish spiked to a record high of 32 while in previous season, the numbers are down to 20, one of the lowest in recent history. This is due to the merger of the clubs and withdrawal from other clubs due to financial, sustainability or management issues. Listed are the 20 professional sports clubs that will be present from this season on. I cannot be sure if these clubs will stick around for the next few seasons or so, but 1 thing I am well confident of is that, these are some of the more stable clubs in the Maplish sporting scene with a reliable fan base and a rich long history that accompanies them. But who knows? In this dynamic sporting scene in Mapletish, time will tell whether these clubs can survive this environment.

SC Galatasaray

Southampton
SC Las Palmas

Moonchester City
Moonchester United

We will first start off with Mapletish's most popular sport and that is none other than Association Football. Football in Mapletish has certainly changed a whole lot since Season 1 and just recently, Season 16 was concluded. It has an entirely new format starting from Season 15 with a 64 team professional league structure split into 4 divisions. Taking the top division is the Primero Liga, which is cut from 20 teams, followed by the Segunda Campeonatos, Liga Tercero and Liga Cuarto.

Season 16 saw Versatio Giants shocked everyone and took the Primero Liga in the second half of the season. If we look at the previews, we are all sure that Golden Phoenix will be a strong contender to retain their title while the odds are certainly tipped in Home United's favour. But, it was Versatio Giants which were the eventual winners of their maiden title. Concluding their maiden win, they join the exclusive club of champions and are a "One-Timer Club' now together with SC Galatasaray, Celtics Rovers, Club Atletico and Balmope Betis which have all won 1 Primero Liga in their campaigns in the top flight.

The season curtain riser was a clash between the two arch rivals, Home United and Golden Phoenix. With a Super Classico so early in the season, we certainly saw plenty of goal mouth action and exciting plays from both ends of the pitch in the Mapletish National Stadium which saw Home United beat Golden Phoenix 4-2 with an exciting hat trick by Leandro Cloe. Leandro Cloe is certainly likened to be the new leader in the front line for the Dragons. This creative attacking midfielder has been on the lips of the Protectors' fans all season and he recently won the Golden Boot, Golden Ball for overall top goal scorer and best overall player on the pitch all season.

Right up on the overall look on the league, Versatio Giants win the title 2 points ahead of Home United, while SC Galatasaray and Golden Phoenix round up the top 4. This season also saw SC Barcelona and Bury Town, the two were promoted from the Segunda, finished in the 7th and 8th respectively, presenting fairly challenging and competitive matches with them as they took on the top flight. Catanzaro, the other team to have promoted to the Primero Liga, finished 6 points from safety above the drop zone, which sealed their victims, Woodlands United, Moonchester United and Heywood City. Starting in Season 17, there will only be 2 football club in the Primero Liga, following the relegation of football clubs Woodlands United and Heywood, and the promotion of Celtics Rovers, Lazio and SC Milan. The domination of sports clubs have been highly evident in the Primero Liga which is filled with Big 20 teams.

If we look beyond the Primero Liga, we can also see sports clubs in the Segunda Campeonatos and Liga Tercero. In Season 16, Southampton, Pittsburgh, Djax, Struggait United, Celtics Rovers, SC Milan and SC Las Palmas played their trade in the Segunda while fellow Big 20 club, SC Porto played in the Liga Tercero. This will continue as a trend though in Season 17. Amongst the Big 20, SC Porto gets their promotion to the Segunda following a 3rd place finish while Djax, Struggait United and SC Las Palmas saw a drop in their divisions as they finished in the last 3 of the Segunda. Moonchester City was one point away from safety as they stayed afloat in the Segunda for another season. Further upwards, we see Southampton and Pittsburgh finished 4th and 5th respectively while Celtics Rovers, a Primero Liga winner and SC Milan promoted to the Primero Liga.

We can certainly see how Djax, Struggait United and SC Las Palmas, getting a cut in resources for the football department in the next season or we can see a large injection of resources in these areas for them to get ahead and into the Primero Liga. However you see it, we can be assured that the Liga Tercero is certainly not a desirable place to be in, considering their status. They would be giants in the 3rd division of the football league structure. If we take a look at sponsorship revenue in general, these 3 clubs going down to the Tercero are miles ahead in sponsorship revenue, an average per season sponsorship income of USD$45 million for these clubs while clubs down in the third tier have an average per season sponsorship income of only USD$12 million.

The increasing disparity between single sport and multi-sport clubs have continued in recent years as multi-sport clubs generally consolidate their resources and are generally run like large corporations with extensive resources and large earning capabilities through multiple channels like merchandising, commercials, sponsorship, broadcasting and matchday revenues. In this aspect. As seen in Mapletish's context, the top tier professional sports leagues in Association Football, rugby, ice hockey and basketball, used in comparison are all dominated by the professional sports clubs while the semi-professional and amateur single sport clubs in general filled the semi-pro and amateur leagues.

This can be seen as a positive side to professional sports as the athletes represent the elite in the Union and they are well paid whlist performing at the top levels. While on the other hand, semi-professional and amateur clubs cater to athletes who do what they do because of their love and passion for their sport. Some of them maybe, do what they do to get their chance in getting pro. The professional clubs have done what they do best and are always on the lookout for talents outside of the professional arena, constantly scouring in the non professional sports scene too. In recent years, Sunday League players have been called up for the Maplish squad in the NS World Cup too, so that shows the depths and layers that our amateur athletes can provide too.

Besides multi-sport clubs which continue to dominate the national sports headlines, single sport clubs have also made their impact in the Maplish sports scene. A prime example would be football development by football clubs in the Mapletish Football League, where single sport clubs get one of the largest exposure in. Single sport professional clubs are made possible right here because of the competitiveness that these clubs have continued to provide over the seasons. The Mapletish Cup carried a great example here when Schalke 07, a Liga Tercero shocked Home United 4-1 at home in their 1st round match up leaving the Protectors stunned and bruised and held them to a 0-0 draw in a return fixture to knock the Protectors out in the first round for the first time in their Mapletish Cup history. Segunda Campeonatos team Auckland Rovers stretched their winning run in the Mapletish Cup to the quarter-finals where they were defeated 3-2 on aggregate by Bury Town in a close match up against the Segunda Campeonatos Season 15 champions. In another matchup, CA Knights managed a winning run to the semi-finals before being defeated by finalists Golden Eagles 5-4 on aggregate. CA Knights turned their focus towards the football department after the sports club was faced with financial issues which saw them pulling out from the other professional sports leagues and turned their focus towards managing a professional football team instead while running its other departments semi-professionally or by not having a team in that department altogether. Their downsizing affected them quite a bit but they maintained their mid table finish in Season 16, finishing 6 points from safety.

This has been good for sports nonetheless. Multi-sports clubs have also played an integral role in youth sports development, often supporting local clubs through affiliation in developing and identifying potential talented athletes for their respective sport. This involved role that multi-sports clubs play have also reached into schools as these clubs play a more extensive role in the integrating the sports development model in Mapletish as clubs work with academic institutions to identify potential talent pools.

In addition, a representative sports team has also played a role in each region's cultural identity. Each of the sports clubs have a strong regional following with them. Two sports clubs in 1 region has not exactly fared well in this area, as most sports clubs eventually merged sooner if not later despite providing exciting derby encounters. All this with the exception of Home United, Struggait United and Golden Phoenix in Struggait who are local rivals but also regional rivals. These 3 clubs also have regional followings in other than their home region. Struggait United also has a strong supporter following in the region North of Struggait, the Central Midlands region One might also think that Moonchester United and Moonchester City are from the same region but they are more of competitive rivals then local rivals as they are from two different regions.

Next, we will go with ice-hockey. In Season 4 of the MNHL, Golden Phoenix broke the three season hold by Home United with a convincing showing, racking 30 wins in the season in 57 matches. While defending champions Home United saw themselves in 5th place. Golden Phoenix domination this season can be seen in their strong line plays, especially Line One.

GK: Johnson Rasmus
DF: Royce Kaczmarski
DF: Kareem Solomon (C)
C: Gilbert Olmeda
RW: Vern Swindall
LW: Dudley Buckholz

They are definitely responsible for the high scoring season, churning out 50 of the 85 goals by the team, a whopping 58.8% of the goals. Golden Phoenix was also led by the influential Kareem Solomon who was understudy to Josef Reginar, the main defensive man of the WCoH 22, a competition which saw the Mapletish squad taking the 2nd place, the highest WCoH finish by the squad after taking consecutive third place finishes in WCoH 20 and 21.

While Golden Phoenix seized the MNHL, we also got to see their arch rivals Home United take on the post season Cherries Cup in the single round elimination tournament. Season 4 will mark Home United's 3rd Cherries Cup win. There has been a proposal to change the Cherries Cup into a single round-robin tournament starting from Season 5 to match with the other sports leagues and it is certainly the right move here in my opinion. The competitive nature of Maplish sports, the idea of fairness for each club to play each club to determine who will come out top for a championship cup and the additional revenue from broadcasting deals is certainly a win win for the fans and the teams.

In Season 6 of the Mapletish Rugby Union Premiership, we see a new winner to the Premiership and that is Celtics Rovers. A strong defensive line and grabbing two wins over 3rd place Home United was a definite correct move for the maiden champions. The Premiership is dominated by Home United who has won 3 titles, 2 of which are regional Premiership titles but are added to the count. However, they have not won since Season 3. Pittsburgh and Golden Phoenix share the honour of 2 titles each. Starting in Season 5, the MRUP reverted back to one league again and the format stuck through. In addition to winning the Premiership, Celtics Rovers have also grabbed the George Cup, the post season playoff tournament from Home United who has won it on 4 occasions by defeating them 10-7 in the finals. The King's Majesto Cup which was the League Cup of the Premiership was won by Versatio Giants, a first time for them as they beat defending champions Golden Phoenix, 8-5 in the finals. Home United, the first winners, however were ousted by arch rivals in the group stage by point difference. Pittsburgh, a known rugby powerhouse has failed to capture the fans' awe this time round after they failed to capture the George Cup playoffs spot and fell enough Golden Eagles in the King's Majesto Cup. This sentiment was echoed at Northampton as they finished last in the Premiership with only 29 points, 12 points lesser than Club Atletico. A club with strong rugby roots, they would have to buck up in Season 7, considering their fair showing in the Group of Death in the King's Majesto Cup which features Home United, Golden Phoenix, eventual champions Celtics Rovers and Moonchester City.

In the first Mapletish Water Polo Championships, Home United won the league dominantly with a 6 points lead over Versatio Giants and a whopping 349 goals scored in 38 matches played and maintaining a steady defensive line and conceding 257 goals. The top 4 was rounded up by Golden Phoenix and SC Borussia Dortmund respectively. The Queen's Cup playoffs is the post season tournament for the MWPC and only the top 4 will compete in it for a double round robin with the top ranked team taking the trophy. The inaugural Queen's Cup was won by Golden Phoenix who topped Home United by 8 points. For now the inaugural All Star team for the MWPC will show you some of the best performers and top talents of this fairly new competition for which I don't exactly have much history that I can do a trend analysis from.

GK: Keith Talton  (Home United)
C: Judson Kasper (Versatio Giants)
LW: Marcos Ebarb (Home United)
RW: Enoch Matsuo  (Southampton)
LW: Sidney Calahan (Pittsburgh)
RW: Darrick Croskey (SC Borussia Dortmund)
P: Preston Hirano  (Golden Phoenix)

In Season 4 of the MNBA, we see a new league structure altogether. Moving away from the divisional play, the MNBA has decided to consolidate all the teams in a simple league format and get them to play till there is a winner in that matchup. Each team plays each other 4 times, making it a 76 match calendar. The top 8 teams qualifies for the MNBA Championship Playoffs which is a 3 rounds round robin league style with the top ranked team winning the Playoffs. Basketball strong holds Golden Phoenix and Home United finished the season on a 1-2 as Golden Phoenix edged their closest rivals out with 3 more wins, while Home United took the MNBA playoffs victory after posting 4 more wins than Golden Phoenix. The regular season championship win means that Golden Phoenix has matched Home United in the number of titles with 2. The regular season saw Versatio Giants, Porto, Djax, Moonchester City, Pittsburgh and Bury Town rounding up the top 8. Versatio Giants came out as a surprise package this season as they lost their prized Point Guard to Christoper Dalley to eventual regular season champions Golden Phoenix who poached the talisman with a neat 5 year contract that will see the star man earning a whopping USD$20 million a season. Traditional basketball powerhouses SC Las Palmas saw their luck run dry once again as they touched the bottom of the league with only 29 wins and a 0.382 winning percentage.

The tides of sporting favour shifted towards SC Las Palmas in the Mapletish Rugby League Premiership. Running its 4th season, it has seen a new winner every season, making it one of the most competitive in the other professional sports leagues of Mapletish. SC Las Palmas beat Home United by 14 points to win the MRLP and qualifying for the post season George Cup together with Struggait United, Pittsburgh, Celtics Rovers, Balmope Betis, Golden Phoenix and Moonchester City, all ranked by their season finishes respectively. They join Balmope Betis, Home United and Club Atletico in the winners' club. Whats most shocking about the MRLP is the unpredictability here which was evident in this season as defending champions Club Atletico slumped to last place as they bottomed out, making it their worst season ever. Despite the exciting run for SC Las Palmas, Home United grabbed the George Cup after managing a unbeaten post season while SC Las Palmas slumped to 4th in the post season tournament. The Rugby League also marks one of the 3 sports (having leagues running more than 1 season) that Golden Phoenix has never won, together with Handball and Field Hockey, while Home United, their arch rivals has won a championship in each of the professional sports league except for the MNGFL, the gridiron football top tier.

Besides Gridiron Football and Rugby League which has seen a winner in each of the seasons played, the MMLB has also seen 3 winners from 3 seasons. Like MNBA, MMLB has also moved away from the divisional set up and has got everyone involved in the league. Each team plays each other 4 times in the regular season with the top 8 taking on the Mapletish Series Playoffs. In Season 3, we see Golden Phoenix taking the Regular Season title. The Top 8 are rounded up by Home United who were behind by 7 wins, Versatio Giants, who have seen third in quite a number of sports league this season, Moonchester City, SC Borussia Dormtund, Balmope Betis, Bury Town and SC Galatasaray rounding up the top 8 and ranked respectively. Golden Phoenix has also maintained a rather consistent performance as they only managed 19 losses the entire regular season and also took the Mapletish Series after a 4 rounds round robin, putting their 104 matches season to a rest with only 26 losses, giving them a 0.750 winning percentage, one of the most impressive performances put up in the MMLB. Baseball which can also be said to be Pittsburgh strong suit, saw the inaugural winners finishing a lowly 15th place in the MMLB Regular Season. However, the highly competitive nature of the Maplish sports scene has seen what consistency wield in subsequent seasons or you can even see a defending champions sliding into a lowly finish.

In the MFHA Season 4, SC Borussia Dortmund won their first title in the Premiership in a scene that is dominated by Home United, who were the defending champions of the Premiership title. The title was won by only a point and we see Southampton and Moonchester City finishing with 64 points while SC Porto finished with 63 points and Moonchester United with 62 points. This really showed the highly competitiveness of the league and each season was very close. The top 8 was rounded up by Home United, Versatio Giants and SC Las Palmas. Northampton which finished last in the Premiership are 24 points away from the champions, which showed one of the smallest gaps between 1st and last place and the quality of the teams playing in the league. The Cherries Cup was also won by SC Borussia Dortmund as they clinched their first Cherries Cup. Having been around for 4 seasons now, the Cherries Cup has seen 4 different winners with Golden Phoenix, CA Knights and Home United winning the previous 3 editions.

Talking about first time winners, Versatio Giants grabbed their first Handball League title ahead of Home United by 3 points, the defending champions and the club which has dominated the scene. Moving away from the double league format and merging back into a single league once again, the MHA features a MHA League and a MHA League Cup. Golden Phoenix which were not exactly the best in handball rounded up the top 3 finishing 10 points behind Home United. The 4th and 5th place were 9 points and 10 points away from the top 3 which shows that consistency is key here. The MHA League Cup saw first time winners SC Porto take their maiden cup. Split into 4 groups, with 5 teams per group, they played amongst themselves for a double round robin and the group winners will qualify for the Final 4 in the Group Winners Group where they will play each other in a single round robin and the winners will win the MHA League Cup. SC Porto edged out Home United by winning them in their encounter as they finished leveled on points.

Lastly on the MNGFL or the premier Gridiron Football league in Mapletish, Golden Phoenix grabbed their maiden title after Celtics Rovers failed to defend their title as they finished in 14th. The 20 teams played each other once in the MNGFL Regular Season and the top 8 qualify for the Mapletish Bowl Playoffs. Home United, missed out on the Mapletish Bowl playoffs this season as they finished 10th with a 0.474 winning percentage, the only sport that Home United hasn't won a championship in. The Top 8 was rounded up by Golden Eagles, SC Las Palmas, SC Borussia Dortmund, SC Porto, SC MIlan, SC Galatasaray and Moonchester United. The Mapletish Bowl is a single round robin league format with SC Borussia Dortmund taking the Mapletish Bowl with a 0.714 win percentage while Golden Phoenix, the winners of the regular season finished dead last in the Mapletish Bowl playoffs with a 0.286 winning percentage, showing how much damage can be done if you skid off the badly.

Sports League Winners
Association Football: Versatio Giants
Ice-Hockey: Golden Phoenix
Rugby Union: Celtics Rovers
Rugby League: SC Las Palmas
Basketball: Golden Phoenix
Baseball: Golden Phoenix
Gridiron Football: Golden Phoenix
Handball: Versatio Giants
Field-Hockey: SC Borussia Dortmund
Water Polo: Home United

This season could be Golden Phoenix's most successful as they grabbed titles in ice-hockey, basketball, baseball and gridiron football, while Versatio Giants taste successes in both football and handball. Home United missed out closely in some of their more successful sports and were lucky enough to have the Water Polo title. SC Las Palmas found accidental success in the Rugby League Premiership and the same could be said for SC Borussia Dortmund for sports that are traditionally dominated by Home United.

This is Timothy signing off once again for this edition of the Season Review.

Association Football League Season XVII: Part 1

Postby Mapletish » Wed Dec 25, 2019 12:23 am

Image
Season XVII Preview
The 17th season opens up with defending champions and Mapletish Cup winner Versatio Giants taking on the runner up of the Primero Liga, Home United in an early season decider at the FA Community Shield. Competition is certainly running high as Home United missed out on the Primero Liga title narrowly by 2 points as they racked up a commanding goal difference but were not decisive enough in taking away victories. This allowed the Giants to run away with the title. The challenge thus lies in whether the Giants are able to mount a successful title defence, a feat that is not managed outside of Home United and Golden Phoenix. This season, we see Season 12 champions, Celtics Rovers back in the top flight, after spending 1 season in Segunda Campeonatos and winning it to spearhead themselves back into the Primero Liga.

Versatio Giants
Stadium: Giants Ground (57,000) Manager: Bernardino Toni Captain: Russell Shao, CB Star Player: Hiram Hupp, CM
Winning the top flight was something unexpected from the Giants, but the Giants sent the title right in their hands with a passionate showing all season as they edged out 7 time winners Home United right on the last day of the season. A tremendous showing from the all round Hiram Hupp both in defence and attack secured the Giants' amazing season. All eyes are on the youngsters Chance Severns and Florentino Doss to deliver the goods on the attack and the stellar leadership of Russell Shao to do a swift title defence.
Last Season: Champions.

Image Image
Home United
Stadium: Rosfield [102,611] Manager: Jaime Severiano Captain: Valentine Osgood, CB Star Player: Leandro Cloe, CAM
Home United started Season XVI brightly with a 4-2 win over arch rivals Golden Phoenix in the Community Shield and that was just about the only thing they could take away from Season 16 of the Primero Liga. They were down two points in the 29th matchday as they agonisingly drew Golden Phoenix 4-4 as they let the Giants run away with just a match day left to go. The rest they said is the past, despite giving Balmope Betis a thumping on the final matchday, it was not enough as they settled for a 2nd place. All pressure is mounted on the 7 times champions here as they have failed to secure the title for 5 seasons, despite being silverware favourites. A lackluster showing in the Mapletish Cup last season saw the Protectors fell out in the first round losing to Schalke from the 3rd division. We shall see what the new season can deliver as Jaime Severiano and Co faces an ever competitive Primero Liga.
Last Season: 2nd.

Image Image
SC Galastaray
Stadium: Galastaray Road (57,000) Manager: Kemal Hasip Captain: Bud Cressey, CB Star Player: Chester Kulikowski, ST
A downsized budget, crew and squad had its effects on this talented management and players but that was to be left behind after a strong showing in the Primero Liga last season, seeing Galastaray finishing 3rd ahead of Golden Phoenix as they clocked a strong showing all season, having the 2nd biggest goal difference after Home United. Having only got a sole championship to their name, the fans are certainly looking for more to tally up. Kemal Hasip knows consistency is key for this squad as he looks to secure a link up around his 3 key players, Joseph Nakagawa, Chester Kulikowski and Bud Cressey, and to keep them in the team for the long term. Picking themselves up this season and maintaining their form this season shouldnt be a difficult thing here.
Last Season: 3rd.

Image Image
Golden Phoenix
Stadium: Phoenix Road [98,650] Manager: Nacho Benjamin Captain: Toribio Andres, CDM Star Player: Eduardo Eutimio, LW
Where's the title, you can hear Phoenix Road singing as Golden Phoenix failed to defend their title once again. Behind Home United, no other team has successfully mounted more than 2 title defences. In fact, no other team has mounted 3 successful defences other than Home United. Golden Phoenix, however, had certainly underperformed as they finished 4th and agonisingly behind their arch rivals Home United, who took on runner ups. Having failed to avoid defeats that could be avoidable and eking out draws against inferior opponents, there looks to be so much more that the team can do but have failed to. There is thus so much that the team has to prove in Season 17.
Last Season: 4th.

Image Image
Club Atletico
Stadium: Atletico Dome [60,000] Manager: Leon Noberto Captain: Darrel Anstett, CM Star Player: Delmar Sauve, CB
Club Atletico finished outside of expectations as they took on a spot outside of the top 4 after a stellar showing in Season 15. They are still looking to replicate the craziness that they have shown in Season 13 as they won their maiden title but that was a close enough last season. Fans can cheer with the huge money injected into the club to improve the club facilities and of course the promotion of youngsters from Atletico's youth academy, sealing what would be an all exciting Season 17.
Last Season: 5th.

Image Image
Golden Eagles
Stadium: Excellence Ground [58,000] Manager: Ismael Raimundo Captain: Tyrone Kittel, GK Star Player: Willis Cerrone, CAM
Golden Eagles, as consistent as they can be. Ismael Raimundo, the man behind the change in fortunes for the Eagles, continues to work his magic as he and his team maneuvers the dangerous waters of the Primero Liga. Still eyeing on that Globe Cup spot that they have well earned in Season 14, there is a need to pick up crucial points against the huge clubs in front of them before they are able to cement a title challenge which they are so longing for. Can they turn the tables around and be more than a mid table club?
Last Season: 6th.

Image Image
SC Barcelona
Stadium: Campus Nou (45,000) Manager: Rainerio Eustaquio Captain: Willy Bowerman, LB Star Player: Ethan Nickens, ST
SC Barcelona has a tremendous season as they got themselves in the top flight in Season 15. Getting into Season 16, they were able to maintain their composure and they finished the highest amongst the 3 teams that got their promotion into the Primero Liga. Relegation plagued to middle of the table team, there are new expectations to meet as the increase in budgets and sponsorship incomes look to keep Barcelona in the top flight. Eustaquio, a business manager, football coach and the influential family man and fan favourite is currently on a mission to build the club to challenge the Primero Liga.
Last Season: 7th.

Image Image
Bury Town
Stadium: Tayafra Stadium (46,250) Manager: Marino Chuy Captain:Darron Hughes, STStar Player:Elmer Wyant, LW
Winning the Segunda was a great achievement for a young squad like Bury Town. Maintaining their status in the Primero Liga is the next great achievement. Finish right in the middle of the table can be said to be a commendable effort for the club. Coming out from a rollercoaster ride previously, maintaining some kind of consistency will be the next goal for this club who looks to cement their spot in the Primero Liga for the long term. As a club not synonymous with football, it goes to show how the management shall look in the division of resources in order to direct the efforts in an ever growing demand for performance in the Primero Liga, or they might see Bury Town end up in the Segunda.
Last Season: 8th.

Image Image
Northampton
Stadium: Northampton Road (45,000) Manager: Felipe Ruy Captain: Oliver Ullman, LB Star Player: Sheldon Romberg, RW
Once in the 3rd division of Mapletish football and struck with financial troubles which saw the club releasing many of their top players. 9 seasons ago, the sports organisation seemed to not be able to hold themselves together and they were at risk and as recently as Season 11, they looked like they cannot survive the 3rd division as well. However, the past is behind them as Northampton finished safely in the 9th spot in the Primero Liga last season. Consistent performances although lackluster in some parts helped Northampton stay in the green. There looks to be more jostling in this half of the table as teams look to finish out of the drop zone in this ever competitive league.
Last Season: 9th.

Image Image
Central Aden Knights
Stadium: Kings' Arena (50,000) Manager: Mariano Patricio Captain: Courtney Poeppelman, ST Star Player: Michal Cozart, LWB
The Knights might be a threatening force in other sports, but in football, they are best known to stay in the bottom half of the table. Last season showed this trend again as the Knights finished in the 10th spot, not far from where they were in Season 15. Adding quality to this side is the besides the point as Patricio will be thumping his chest and racking his brain hard as he put a side that is able to mingle well together in an attempt to fight the drop as they finished six points from safety last season.
Last Season: 10th.

Image Image
SC Borussia Dortmund
Stadium: Westfalenstadion (82,000) Manager: Pascal Frank Captain: Pat Speaker, GK Star Player: Nickolas Zelman, CM
Another club with huge expectations with the budget and fan base to challenge for the Primero Liga. Ever since their entrance into the Primero Liga though, they have failed to make an impact, missing out on Globe Cup qualification on several occasions but last seaosn was the second time, that they might have been threatened to live their lives outside of the top flight. Finishing six points from safety was a dangerous prospect as they together with CA Knights, Balmope Betis and Catanzaro fought out a close drop zone battle. In an ever competitive league, Dortmund will have to tread carefully and to not miss any chances of survival if they want to remain in the top flight and not drop like their counter parts Moonchester United who shocked the top flight and ended going down to the Segunda.
Last Season: 11th.

Image Image
Balmope Betis
Stadium: Cedoune Stadium (45,000) Manager: Eusebio Mario Captain: Lee Szewczyk, CDM Star Player: Pete Vargas, ST
League champions in Season 14 and poof, Season 15 saw them slump into 5th, placing behind Golden Eagles. Mario has a lot to answer for the failure to defend the title. And now he has more to explain as he failed to even place in the top half of the table in Season 16. A major underperformance by a title challenging side but the pre season has shown some promise as Betis hopes to leverage on the lessons of the previous season and to look ahead to finish higher and perform better in Season 17.
Last Season: 12th.

Image Image
Catanzaro
Stadium: Carzan Stadium (45,000) Manager: Eladio Luis Captain: Emmett Snelgrove, CDM Star Player: Jefferson Knuth, CAM
Catanzaro's season in the top flight was concluded safely as they finished just outside of the drop zone. The fans of this sports club has a lot to cheer for as their expectations were well managed and they were able to compete in the rigours of the top flight. Leveraging on the fresh injection of money in the coffers, Catanzaro has more resources to compete in the top flight now. Season 17 will see how this underdog slay some of the bigger clubs.
Last Season: 13th.

Celtics Rovers
Stadium: Celtics Stadium (56,000) Manager: Vladimir Grigori Captain: Lavrenti Maksim, CM Star Player: Tikhon Nika, ST
Celtics Rovers are finally back in the Primero Liga after missing out in Season 16 as they failed to live up to their expectations and were unable to beat the drop. As a member of the One Timer club, expectations are piling on their shoulders once again, after a tremendous showing in the Segunda, which saw Celtics take home the championship. The rigours of the top flight shall now show as Vladimir Grigori and Co looks to secure a more permanent presence in the top flight.

Lazio
Stadium: Estadio Lazio (51,000) Manager: Felipe Luio Captain: Janclique Campeon, ST Star Player: Janclique Campeon, ST
Known to be a club which adverts all risk, Lazio finds themselves in the top flight. As a club outside of the Mapletish 20 sports club, it might find itself struggle in the face of so many big name clubs. Money in itself is a huge issue that coming into the top flight has helped solved. However, the rigours of the top flight will strike some realism in the dreamy fans of the Lazio club very soon if the club fail to adapt.
Last Season: 2nd, Segunda Campeonatos.

SC Milan
Stadium: San Siro (84,000) Manager: Ingzahi Shye Captain: Dansbridge Wilson, CB Star Player: Sam Smith, CAM
Milan, the other Mapletish 20 club to be back in the Primero Liga lights up as they finally reached the top of the football pyramid after plying their trade down in the bottom divisions for far too long. There is a need for Milan to stay right up in the Primero Liga here as the huge San Siro is far too big for life in the Segunda. Ingzahi Shye and Co will look to mount a serious challenge in the bottom half of the table against fellow promotees, Lazio and Celtics Rovers as all three look to cement their presence in the Primero Liga for the long term. Beating the drop will be on the minds of Dansbridge Wilson as the captain sorts to organise his team to a challenging season ahead.
Last Season: 3rd, Segunda Campeonatos.

Season Curtain Riser: Versatio Giants 1-8 Home United: Thumping victory as the Protectors open the Season brightly

Stadium: Mapletish National Stadium, 86,000

Versatio Giants 1 (Russell Shao 17')
Home United 8 (Marcelo Sevier 10', Leandro Cloe 22', 31', 40', 55', 67', 77', 86')

The clash between the double winners in Season 16 and the runner ups of the Primero Liga kicked off in a typical Maplish winter setting in the Mapletish National Stadium. Traditionally, the Community Shield is contested between the winners of the Mapletish Cup and the Primero Liga but for Season 17, that honour is reserved for the runner ups of the Primero Liga, Home United as Versatio Giants were the double winners last season. The two competitive rivals were closely matched in the Primero Liga last season and this curtain riser to Season 17 will serve to see who made the most effective preparations ahead of Season 17. Home United's skipper Leandro Close started this whole curtain riser brightly as he sealed 7 goals in this match up to seal Jaime Severiano's side victory and the lid of the Giants' pre season chances as the latter had to succumb to the vicious attacking plays and revenge for stealing the League away from the Protectors.

The 5°C weather didn't affect the heat from the passion of the fans from both sides as they cheered and singed proudly throughout the match as the teams kicked off the match with confidence. Versatio Giants were the first to put the play right on with an energetic midfield trio of Boyd Coatney, Josue Blough and Ahmed Madonna. However, their first advance in attack was denied by the all acrobatic Fermin Feldstein, the Protectors' ever present shot stopper. In the 5th minute, the Giants earned their breakthrough as Russell Shao closed in on the flanks and delivered a vicious cross towards Lucio Carlen only to see the latter run in to the arms of Feldstein as the shotstopper caught the ball comfortably.

The Protectors were not late to the party though as they scored the opener of the match with a deciding goal from Marcelo Sevier. Valentine Osgood delivered a short corner to Edison Mabry who swirled the ball into the goal for Marcelo Sevier to pop a header into Dan Westphal far side to open the proceedings proper. It didn't take long for the Giants to open the response kit as Russell Shao showed individual brilliance following a quick combination of passes from Hiram Hupp and Lucio Carlen to release Shao into the open and a left feint was just sufficient to open some space for him to slot in a goal to keep the scores leveled.

Cloe kept the 20th minute alive with a daring run into space behind King Tinner and Alden Sanson to slot a through ball from Colin Epley wide. It was the ever present Leandro Cloe once again as he turned on the heat with an attempted speedy delivery of the ball towards Colin Epley but he was brought down by King Tinner right in the penalty box. The referee pointed to the spot straight away denying any disputes from both sides, stating his intentions straight. Cloe slot the penalty in simply and with much fanfare brought the score in the Protectors' favour.

This will be the last time the Giants see the scoreline so closely towards them as they started to slipped away from here. In the 31st minute it was the ever present Colin Epley who combined a neat play from Valentine Osgood towards Cloe who tricked his way through the defence line led by Russell. Cloe would confidently slot another goal against Dan Westphal to put the score 3-1 in the Protectors' favour.

The Giants played hard to worked up a response but they were unable to proceed with their plays against a well structured defence of the Protectors. Hiram Hupp worked up a neat one two with Gale Crawshaw to release the latter into the Giants' defence but Crawshaw could only see his efforts denied as Giovanni Rattler body checked him off the ball in the 36th minute. This missed opportunity would be on the mouths of the Giants' fans for many years to come as it was Cloe once again who brought score away from the Giants favour in the 40th minute. A mis-placed pass from King Tinner towards Josue Blough was cut by the speedy Valentine Osgood who sent a throughball towards Cloe who beat the backtracking Giants' defence line and the Protectors' skippers slot another goal against Westphal.

The first half was concluded by a confident showing from Giants but they started to fade away after the Protectors kept on the pressure and to avenge their loss from the previous season. This runaway put the score at 4-1 as both teams went into the dressing rooms. The Mapletish National Stadium was visibly shaken as the Giants' fans quieten down as the minutes dragged on in what would be the longest minutes there was out there. The Protectors' fans continued their singing and as the scoreline widened there was dancing coupled with the singing.

The second half kicked off with a commendable effort back into the game by the Giants as the ever present Russell Shao won the ball away from the Protectors from the kick off, kept the ball in the Giants' half and to work an attack from there. Put the midfield trio on the field, got Boyd Coatney, Josue Blough and Ahmed Madonna in the picture, get them to work their magic and attempted an attack on the sturdy Protectors' defence. The combination and urgency towards the attack was well appreciated by Hiram Hupp who got to the end of the combination only to see his efforts go into the drain as Feldstein was right there to block off the attempt.

The 55th minute was marked by another goal by the talisman Cloe who got brought down in a desperate attempt to keep him away from goal. This time round, it was a free kick from outside the box. A calming moment for Cloe right there as the Giants' fans attempted to throw him off with distractions but Cloe only has eyes on the target and the ball as a straight ball in the upper left corner sealed the 5th goal for the Protectors.

With the ever widening scoreline, the Giants opted to drag plays and were not as passionate and desperate to get goals anymore. This breakdown in mentality was not very well appreciated for Bernardino Toni as he stood at the sidelines yelling instructions for the players. Toni got tired of what he saw in the end and opted to sit in the dugout for the rest of the match, and kept himself busy by scribbling notes on his championship winning notebook.

The Protectors would take all the advantages tipped to them as they crawled on the offence. The 67th minute saw Cloe grabbing his fifth goal of the game to cement his Man of the Match award already. Valentine Osgood's corner landed straight on Cloe's chest as the latter cushioned the ball comfortably and struck the ball right in the opposite corner of Westphal who could only looked on and fall on his knees as he cupped his head in disappointment. The breakdown in the team spirit for the Giants was well mitigated by Giants' spirited captain, Shao who yelled encouragement to his teammates.

Despite fighting hard to win and keep possession in an attempt to minimise the damage to the scoreline, the breakdown of the Giants were evident but efforts were made to frustrate the Protectors. Heading into the 70th minute region, the Giants hogged the ball and protected the ball well as they ventured into Home United's territory. A missed attempt to tackle Blough was recovered and Coatney received the pass to start a neat attacking move. Hiram Hupp waved at Coatney as the former made an ambitious run to be at the end of Coatney's cross. Feldstein dashed out from the goalmouth to punch the ball out of danger.

The 77th minute saw an individual brilliant performance from Cloe who took on a double team in the form of Tinner and Sanson to send the ball to Epley who relayed the ball back to Cloe only for Westphal to mistime his save for the ball allowing Cloe to skip past Westphal and slot the ball in the empty net ahead of Russell who could be seen sending in a sliding tackle towards Cloe. 7-1, the scoreline heading in the 80th minute as the Protectors kept possession steadily to come up with another attacking move before the final whistle to seal the gasp on the Community Shield.

The eighth goal for the Protectors was sealed in the 86th minute as Cloe did an acrobatic volley against Westphal following a mid-body cross from Valentine Osgood. Cloe celebrated with a triple back flip as he ran towards the corner flag and applauded the fans for their tremendous support. Teammates raced towards Cloe as they all lined up to bow to the fans for their support throughout the match. The Protectors would line up in their formations once again for the last time as they let the Giants played out the last 4 minutes of the match with their time dragging tactics. The final whistle finally sounded as the Giants were glad to end the longest 90 minutes of their lives as they strolled slowly back to the dressing rooms. The Protectors on the other hands lined up once again at the centre of the pitch to applaud and bowed to their fans. They then jogged a lap of honour and applauded the fans once again.

With that, the season opener was thus won by Home United.

MNHL Season 5

Mapletish National Hockey League Season 5

Ice hockey is one of the more popular sports in Mapletish, together with the National team's strong showings in the World Cup of Hockey many editions ago, ice hockey has been a sport with rising and thriving popularity amongst Maplish. Historically, the sport has been limited mainly by geographical zones since snow is not something that is prevalent throughout Mapletish. Winter sports is the mainstay for regions in the higher altitudes with snowy winters, and the traditional heavy weights Home United and Golden Phoenix are favourite clubs in a slightly hilly Struggait region, with snowy winters. This is evident in their strong ice hockey cultures. The two rivals are also the MNHL's only league winners since its inception. Modern day games though have expanded with the introduction of indoor rinks, now even predominantly sunny regions have a shot at putting ice-hockey teams, case in point, SC Las Palmas and SC Porto.

Season 5 was a shocker as the title went to Struggait United, the smallest of the Struggait teams. The minnows of Struggait shocked everyone else and won the title comfortably with 4 points ahead of Celtics Rovers. Home United, the traditional heavyweights finished in third in a lacklustre season by their standards. All- Sunny Las Palmas finished just behind Home United, while the latter's arch rivals, Golden Phoenix finished 17th, in one of the most uncomfortable of finishes. Series of unfortunate defeats saw Golden Phoenix miss out on the Cherries Cup playoff and HCL. Southampton put in a consistent showing as they finished in the Cherries Cup's playoff spot, while fellow rivals Northampton made it into the top 8 too, finishing the "Thampton" round up. Club Atletico too finished in the top 8, carrying their Cherries Cup's playoff streak into Season 5 from Season 4. Galatasaray rounded up the top 8 after missing out from the top 8 by 11 points in Season 4.

The reformed MNHL allowed a more round robin style as each sport club play each other thrice with the top 8 rounding up for a single legged post season Cherries Cup to determine the Post Season's winner. Struggait United, Celtics Rovers, Home united, SC Las Palmas, Southampton, Club Atletico, Northampton and SC Galatasaray rounds the Cherries Cup with Home United taking home the honours once again, for what would be their 4th win. Home United got through with a tight 4-3 win over Celtics Rovers, a 3-2 win over fellow Struggaiters, Struggait United and got one over Northampton in the Finals shootout 1-0 to keep their streak alive.
