So, I signed up for the BoF and the WC. But, I'll be unable to access technology from Thursday afternoon to Sunday morning. How will this affect the scheduling? I've never been in a big tourney, but I have rp'd in some. Will I miss any games? Will I be disqualified? I'm starting to regret signing up, lol.

It's quite alright, actually.

The bid deadline isn't until Wednesday night Central Time in North America (sometime Thursday morning for most of the world).

There's usually six to seven RL days for the EWCC to vote on the bids, so I'd guess the possibility of missing any games would be slim. After the vote takes place, the hosts announce the schedule which sometimes includes a few days to post rosters and RPs before matchday 1 is scored.

You won't be disqualified if you can't post a roster or RP, it just makes it very difficult to win any games. Also, as many point out, you only get one chance at the Baptism of Fire, once a nation participates it's World Cup and Cup of Harmony from that point forward.

To expand on the above, if you mean every Thursday to Sunday, then you're just missing out on the opportunity to RP for any Matchdays that fall across those weekends (at least it's the weekend to me, living in the Middle East). You'll likely miss a couple of games between then (at least one, maybe two if they're every 48 hours, sometimes three if it's every 24 hours per matchday depending on how they fall).

You'll not be disqualified - there is no requirement to RP. You'd only be missing out on potential bonuses in scorination from your roleplays to help you have a chance of getting improved results.

Like Star said, RP can be just about any kind of narrative you are comfortable with. I started out in NS College Football, and most of my stuff was straight game stories, but then I started to branch out a bit. But I think some of the very best stuff I've read in other competitions has been behind the scenes/slice of life stories. I guess the kids would call it NPC background stories...
I mentioned on the AO regional board I'm still writing chapters of the longer Banija Civil War arc from WC 80 as dispatches for my own amusement, b/c I just like the characters and we sort of didn't get a chance to have a good wrap up.

It was pointed out this evening that the NS Sports Discord server doesn't appear to be as well advertised as it should be. So this is an advert for it!

People who have come across it tend to have found it from the NSSport IRC channel, but the versatility of Discord, and the ability to have it as an easy mobile app as well as a desktop one, as well as message permanence, means it's quickly taking over from IRC and leaving that channel quite dead. Once you've joined, a mod will need to set you a role so you can see the previous messages in the various server channels. We have one general chat room, one for RL sports, random entertainment, hosting announcements, domestic newswires and more.

Our invite link is here, and if you need the app itself, or to find out more about it, go to https://discordapp.com/.

Hope to see you there!

It certainly hasn’t, despite the repeated assertions by those who feel compelled to advertise for that company.

Just as a heads up to everyone involved, we're not officially jumping away from the IRC to the Discord server. You join whatever you wish.

Considering one player who found the Discord this evening, prompting my advertising post, who is usually in IRC said the following, I'd beg to differ somewhat:

I'm glad that NS Sports chatting hasn't died
It merely moved
I was thinking about quitting IRC since it was just so fucking dead

And, having not seen a single link to the Discord server in the WCDT (having just searched this thread for one and only found my own), I fail to see how it's being repeatedly asserted that IRC is dying and Discord is the place to be instead. The point was that not enough people know about the existence of the NS Sport Discord, which I personally find much easier and interesting than the IRC, and the more the merrier.

Didn't mean to imply that at all - it was just an advert for a thing that exists that people don't know about :)

It’s been repeatedly asserted in #nssport, in an apparent attempt to scare people away from it. (But if Discord is so wonderful, why do people go on IRC to talk about it?) I don’t take issue with you bringing it up, just that specific claim. The IRC channel has always had periods of activity and inactivity.

Meh.

I still don't see the attraction; though it seems to be very good at self-promotion.

To be fair, you don't really use IRC either, so it's not too surprising you're not a fan of Discord or any other chat platform for that matter :)

The attraction's chatting with other people you get along with. The NS Sports community seems to use Discord as its place to chat, for some reason. I preferred IRC, but I can't just make everyone else move.

As a sidenote, I am the user Starblaydia talked about. IRC is deader than I've ever seen it be dead (and I've been using it regularly for five years). I was honestly getting worried that the community was dying. :/

Surely Cuneiform counts as a chat platform.

You'd be surprised what I do that you might not know about.

I haven't used IRC for NSSports much in the last 5 years, but I've had a similar discussion in other contexts.

Cuneiform not so much.

The clay tablets cuneiform is written on? Absolutely.

A functional mobile app will get you very far. And a solid voice client + a permanent text chat packaged together is a strong pitch. It's basically the jack of all trades communication platform; it has a forum's permanent searchable history, IRC's real-time text conversations, Ventrilo/Teamspeak/Mumble's voice client, and it's all accessible on the go. It doesn't do any of those jobs as well as any of the more specific options, but the one-app convenience is a big deal.

That's not to say it's a product for everyone, of course--just that the appeal isn't such a mysterious thing :P

Ah, so that explains the car that stopped near my place for like all the night.

I also still use the IRC channel. Personally, I'd speculate IRC has fallen out of favor with some since ChatZilla development stopped (the IRC client that existed for years as an add-on for Netscape/Mozilla/SeaMonkey/Firefox/etc.) and more recently the old qwebirc Webchat was replaced by an (strictly IMO) inferior web app. There are quite a few other IRC clients out there.
