As far as I know, most, if not all, hosts do this - it's pretty uncommon practice to not do it, in my experience.

It might not be realistic, however my first RP'd match was AOCAF 18 MD 1. and the Baptism of Fire is designed to give new nations some competitive matches under their belt before World Cup qualifying starts.

Yeah, am I right in my assumption that all writing goes towards my chances of winning? Cos that's nice but it's not really why I want to get a few matches in first. Think of it like how Gibraltar used to have minor matches before joining UEFA.

Fortunately I have a bite in the friendly thread now, but thanks for the advice.

All writing in the thread counts, yeah. Speaking as someone who wrote (in hindsight, way too many) a couple pre-MD1 RPs on pre-tournament friendlies and ended up winning my Baptism, I heartily endorse your plans.

Just to add to the above, don't expect everything about this subforum to be completely realistic. We've had teams composed of sapient ponies, fish, coconuts, jumping beans, Fog Things, Santa Clice, extraterrestrials, and more. So don't assume this will work exactly like RL because it doesn't. But everything everyone said above is correct and Good advice.

I remember once that a nation kidnapped and then murdered one of Firebolt's citizens (which was a broom), solely for the sake of "understanding the opponent", and Firebolt considered that a cassus belli. This stuff can get pretty intense.

Ye gads, what have I got myself into?

Nah, that's fine. So long as we broadly follow the actual rules of the sport I don't think it matters what else happens. I was planning on some supernatural elements anyway, as it happens. Global Economics and Trade wasn't looking 'weird enough' for me.

Is there some sort of repository for these notable RPs? A 'hall of fame', or something? Would be nice for noobs like me to read. Get a feel for the tone and atmosphere of the place.

Not that I know of... but now that you mention it, we probably should have something like that. I would suggest just pulling up the RP threads for the last couple World Cups and skimming through those to get a lay of the land.

Maybe an nomination thing, similar to what is done in P2TM.

My problem is that because of the nature of this sub-forum, there is a variety of different styles of rp'ing, and therefore it would be more difficult to gauge something like this than it would in other forums. But I'm all up for the idea.

I've thought the P2TM thread would be a great thing to mimic for awhile (like since before I left the first time).

There may be slight confusion that the announcement thread says Thursday 28th December. Some - I count myself among them - would just see 'Thursday' in big letters and not realise the date doesn't match. From your reminder here I think it's fair to assume you mean Wednesday...
