8-Star Eel-Cat Things Oust Champs

Vilita & Turori 8 - 3 Valanora

Independenta Stadionul, Oras de Est :: Playing in Ratastan for the first time in their history, the Vilita & Turori Eel-Cat Things had put together a solid, but not terribly impressive performance to escape from the group stage and advance to the knockout round of the 45th AOCAF competition. The Champions of AOCAF 41 & AOCAF 42, the Eel-Cat things would begin their Quest for the Cup in AOCAF 45 with a Round of 16 matchup against Furellum.

Not known as one of the major powers of Atlantian Oceania, many expected Furellum to be a free-pass of sorts for Vilita & Turori, with the Eel-Cat things widely expected not only to win, but to win handily.

That couldn't have been further from the case, however, as Vilita & Turori needed extra time before finally putting Furellum away by a 4-2 scoreline. It was a wakeup call for the Eel-Cat things who, when drawn against defending AOCAF champions Valanora in the Quarter Finals, had to realize that they had a lot of work to do to be prepared for the match - there was no way the team that struggled to escape the Round of 16 matchup against Furellum would be able to de-throne the reigning AOCAF champions and all-time winningest side in the World Cup.

The Eel-Cat things worked tirelessly in the build up to the match against the Marauders and when the opening kick-off came at the Independenta Stadional, there was an aire of confidence about the Vilita & Turori players.

When Zelkki Milake was digging the ball out of the back of the net 13 minutes into the match, however, it appeared that the writing was on the wall for the Eel-Cat things. Valanora's Sellien Isiliéseil had hit a wundergol from 30 yards out and Milake could do nothing as the defending champions got the upper hand. Perhaps, however, the goal lit a spark in the Vilita & Turori players who responded brightly. So brightly in fact, that within 20 minutes, not only did the Eel-Cat things have the lead, but they'd peppered Aediron Galadirdren for 5 goals, resulting in a super-rare mid-game goalie change by Vanorian head coach Vamariiel Falavir.

Things would calm down from that point and cruise toward the half where Valanora pulled one back through Laborious Hawk just before the half, reducing the deficit to 5-2.

It was all about containment in the second half for the Eel-Cat things - or, at least it should have been, as they had built up more than enough of a lead to sit on and could sense the Semi-Finals in their future.

The Vanorian fans who were likely compelled to remain at the stadium by Hawk's late goal in the first half began filing out when Kaivel Illatara scored a 6th for Vilita & Turori in the 52nd minute. Those that stayed were treated to another goal, however, this one from Héra Teltholsyr who got on the end of a cross from Tanna Norovathar, the young Ibini FC winger who was starting the match in place of Vanorian legend Espy va Drake who was unavailable. It was an important contribution for Norovathar, who may otherwise have found herself as part of the discussion explaining the Vanorians defeat in the absense of one of their top players, but unfortunate for the netminder Gladirdren who likely would become the scapegoat.

Valanora was not about to give up, down 6-3 they continued to push forward but doing so also allowed more space for the Vilita & Turori attack, which added two more goals in the closing minutes to up the final scoreline to 8-3, likely the second most improbable knockout round result in Vilitan Cove history, behind only the morale-crushing 7-8 defeat to Bedistan in World Cup 21 that ended the Vilita Jungle Cats reign as World Cup champions.

When the whistle finally blew in Ratastan, it was Valanora's reign as AOCAF champions that had come to an end. Likewise, mercifully, the Quarter Final contest was also complete, 11 goals in the books would be more than triple the combined amount of goals scored in the other 3 matches of the round, likely setting up a Takilan v. Karelan style clash between the Eel-Cat things and their Semi-Final opponents.

Increasingly bad predictions, part 3

Yet again we predicted the end to 95Xs miracle run... and once again we were wrong. So for the semifinal game, we will predict a win no matter what. Even if it might be against...

The Vilitans. And don't forget about Turori. The Eel Cat Things scored 8 in a weird game against the Elves: 3-8. It was 5-2 at half time, and even after securing the semis, the Eel Cat Things kept on scoring (though you can never rely on a lead, even if that may be a three goal lead).

As for Ko-oren and Kiryu-shi, we were a bit wrong. But just a bit: we still won, but by double the predicted scoreline. 1-0 turned into 2-0, and after saying that it would probably be the most boring match... that turned out to be right. Only it was not so boring, if you like some bad fouls. Where Vilita & Turori - Valanora turned into a record breaking 11-goal match, Ko-oren - Kiryu-shi turned into a record breaking 11-card match. Davenport was sent off after two yellows, and none of the Ko-orenite defenders made it through without a booking. The five remaining yellows (5 for our defenders plus the Davenport's second one) were all for Kiryu-shi, including a freak incident involving the goal post, Hisahito Kawano, the opposing goalkeeper and two ball boys. And somehow Kawano escaped without a scratch or a yellow card.

And we were wrong about the last game too. Audioslavia is out, Osarius is our next opponent. Audioslavia did not score two goals. And neither did the Firebirds: in fact, nobody scored until the 120 minutes were over. And after that the teams showed they could in fact find the net, by scoring 7 penalties in all until the Firebirds advanced 4-3.

So all in all we were just a bit more wrong than during the Round of 16. Or actually, we had two predictions wrong in the Round of 16 and we had two wrong again in the Quarterfinals. So by this logic, we are going to get two wrong again. And there are just two Semifinals. So we'll say 95X will win, because that is what we promised, but the chance of us getting it wrong is very significant, so in actuality we expect the Eel Cat Things to make it to the final. We will also say Osarius wins, because that would mean a Greenblue victory. And that is a win-win situation: if we get it wrong, Ko-oren is in the final, and if we get it right... we at least got the prediction right.

The Curious Cases of Audioslavia and Osarius

It's strange. There's not much to separate Osarius and Audioslavia in terms of quality, but one nation boasts multiple World Cup final appearances, and has captured multiple global and regional titles, while the other has played in precisely two major finals and has a solitary trophy -- from what is essentially an exhibition tournament; the Confederations Cup -- on display at their home stadium. The two nations sit in the top two positions in the global football rankings, but the gulf between them is immense.

The Firebirds' win -- on penalties -- in last night's AOCAF quarter final matchup marks a second win over Audioslavia for Osarius. Both have come in knockout rounds in major competitions (the other was a World Cup second round victory), but in neither case has Osarius gone on to compete for a trophy. In non-eliminatory matches (i.e. casaran rounds, group stages) every match between the two nations has ended in a draw (ignore third place playoffs, they don't count - Ed.). In matches where the winner will compete for a trophy (i.e. semi-finals) Audioslavia boasts a 100% record. While six games is hardly a large data sample, it has led to the same question from fans and pundits alike. "Why can we only beat them when it doesn't really matter?"

Many will point to a long history of international football competition in Audioslavia, harking back to a time before the Osarian professional league had even been formed, and suggest that this accumulation of experience is what gives the Bulls a decisive edge. This is a strange argument, considering Osarius has recently received recognition from the World Cup Committee for their contribution to the competition over the past forty years. Forty years is a long time in football, after all.

In reality, the difference appears to be a mental one. The Osarius side fielded last night was an under-25 side, missing several key players from the side who were unfortunately defeated in the World Cup semi final last summer. Why were they able to succeed where their seniors failed? Put simply, there is less to fear. While a regional quarter final is a big occasion, it cannot compare with being ninety minutes away from the greatest stage in international football.

It is the same fearlessness that sees younger players enjoy a higher conversion rate from the penalty spot in shootouts. It is the same fearlessness that has seen Osarius enjoy greater relative successes at younger age groups (two Di Bradini cup finals, olympic gold and two AOCAF finals with under 25s) than they have at the full senior level.

Researchers at Utica University have suggested that this difference could be down to our perception of time. "Younger players know they will have more chances to redeem themselves." Explains Professor Antonio Zarate, who led the study at the Tubrissian university. "This means they're more willing to take risks, more willing to gamble on high risk-high reward strategies. As a result, on the balance of probabilities, they end up with greater rewards, or more victories, overall."

While this explains the disparity between Osarius' teams, it doesn't explain why Audioslavia's successes so far outstrip those of the Firebirds. Professor Zarate has a theory on that, too. "Based on our research in this study, we noted that the tendency toward high risk-high reward options increased with each subsequent success. Much like the gambler who wins a couple of hands of blackjack might feel he is on a 'hot streak' and continue to press his luck, increasing his stakes and playing a little more loosely than before." He told us. This was backed up by Zarate's colleague, Utica University's resident sports psychology expert Professor Samuel Diafra. "It's all in the brain chemistry. Winning is thought to stimulate production of various chemicals that promote positive feelings. Like a lot of other chemicals, you can form an addiction, of sorts, to these chemicals, which can stimulate your body to perform actions that will lead to their production." Professor Diafra suggested. "With that in mind, the inverse is also possibly true. Audioslavia had a storied history of failure in major finals until fairly recently. Between experience, and an accumulated anti-addiction of sorts, being the desire to avoid the lack of those positive chemicals, they have a drive that hasn't yet permeated Osarian football."

If Professor Diafra is right, and this "anti-addiction" is something that has accumulated genetically -- via transferrence of genetic material containing the addictive traits implicit in creating the drive to win -- then perhaps it is only a matter of time before the Firebirds make their experience count. A semi final victory against Ko-oren would certainly help, as it would provide a third opportunity at regional glory. In three meetings, Osarius are yet to lose to Ko-oren, though they have been victorious just once, a narrow 5-4 victory in a World Cup qualifier at Mount Crown Stadium some 26 years ago. The two sides last met in the group stage of the World Cup last summer, with Osarius emerging 1-0 victors in a difficult matchup, a similar result occurred two years ago at the AOCAF, too.

Even with Osarius emerging victorious in the last two games, fairly recently... it's difficult to see which way this game will go. Osarius will go into the game as favourites, though, and it's a burden they've often struggled to bear in the past. If Jermain Lewis intends to see this young side take "the next step", this is a situation they must make the most of. This win is expected. It is the win they need to catapult them onto the next level. A win that would constitute more than "a start" for Osarius, as they finally take their place among the multiverse's elite.

(OOC: edit for incorrect statement of the record vs Ko-oren, and a note about third place playoffs)

95X AOCAF 45 QF RP

Postby 95X » Sun Oct 05, 2014 6:03 pm

(OOC: Getting up what I have NOW! Subject to non-retcon additions! Let's go 95Xers!)

Theme song for the upcoming match, also the last song played on 95X radio station "95X" before switching to game play-by-play coverage: Sick Puppies, You're Going Down

As the final whistle blew, 95X tried to contain their enthusiasm. They hadn't won yet, but they had advanced farther than they had since AOCAF Cup 22, when 95X would defeat all-time-archrivals Hypocria for their lone AOCAF Cup win.

Strangely enough, it was Floyd Commando that scored the match's lone goal on a wide-angle shot from the right corner in the 30th minute.

"You have impressed me," Xi Foureleven said to him, straight-faced, after the match. It left several people on the sidelines stunned.

"Floyd," Marvin Stark broke the silence ten seconds after, "I think that's the biggest compliment she's ever given anyone."

Shortly thereafter, Stark convened his team in the locker room, wasting no time detailing his game plan. 95X has always wanted a second chance with Vilita and Turori; this was that chance.

More importantly, Floyd knew the time was right for something else. He dared not discuss it with anyone, as they'd think it was personal, but it wasn't.
After the tournament, Floyd was again visiting his parents on a rare bright, sunny morning in Pacific City. After some warm-ups, he packed a duffel bag with some cleaning supplies, a casual soccer kit just in case, and an extra pair of shoes. Xi Foureleven's house, shrouded by a 3-meter hedge, was a short walk away.

Expecting security as he opened the front gate, he instead easily made his way to the front door of a house that looked much larger from the street than it really was. There was no real yard to speak of, just a few meters of grass and a modest front door.

Floyd knocked, noticing a camera conspicuously pointed at the door. Xi herself answered, cracking open the door.

"What do you want?" she coldly interrogates, not even addressing him by name. "Why are you here?"

"I came here to challenge you," Floyd confidently replies.

They stared blankly at each other.

"I am ready," he adds.

"You are indeed ready," Xi replies. "You may enter," as she opens the door so Floyd could come inside.

Floyd froze. Xi averted her gaze momentarily.

"Did you think we would do this anywhere else?" Xi asks him.

"I didn't know," Floyd replies as he cautiously steps into the door, trying oh-so-hard not to look at any part of Xi he'd lock onto for too long.

"Welcome to my home, Floyd. This way, please," she directs him.

Floyd walks down a narrow entry hallway, and looks around. It's very modest and sparsely decorated; no pictures or awards hang on the blank white walls, and it's immaculately cleaned. He looks to the right thinking he'd see a living room through an arched entry, but instead sees a well-stocked private gym. On the left were a cheap table and chair set. The entire place seemed dust and dirt-free.

"So," Floyd asks, "where's whatever you want me to clean?"

Xi stops, turns around, and glares at him.

"I am flithy stinking rich!" she balks, somewhat insulted, thinking Floyd should have known. "If you must know, I employ someone to clean my house when I am away! Despite your disrespect, I will not direct you to leave!"

Floyd was well-used to the hurricane-force of her words and was unfazed.

In a somewhat softer tone, Xi looked at his street clothes and asked: "You have proper soccer gear on you? Have you done your morning routines?"

"Well, yes—"

"Then there is hope for you yet," Xi verbally cuts him off, and walks a litte further down the hallway, opening a door, and pointing inside. "Your dressing room, sir."

"Dressing room?" Floyd is surprisingly puzzled.

"You were the one who said you were ready." Xi reminded him. She left the door open, while walking to the end of the hallway, where a large stairway leads downward. Floyd cautiously follows. Before descending, Xi turns around and sighs as she catches Floyd looking at her legs, and maybe a bit higher, as she walked down the hall.

"Thinking about the game!" Floyd covers it up.

"You should." Xi replies, she walks down the stairs, and opens the door to a regulation indoor soccer field.

Floyd walks in, amazed at its existence.

"This is yours?" He dumbly asks.

"Yes." Xi states the obvious. "Now go back upstairs and be ready in five minutes."

95X AOCAF 45 SF RP

Postby 95X » Sun Oct 05, 2014 8:03 pm

from a 95X Wire Service report:
95X Will Play for Third Place
RATXFORDSHIRE, RATASTAN—The seldom-used 95X National Soccer Team bench leaned a lesson the hard way in their AOCAF Cup 45 Semifinal: don't lose it right before the end of a match.

With the game tied at 2-2 going into the final minutes of regulation and what would appear to be additional time, Carl Whittaker, a 95X backup defender, lost his cool and threw the chair he was sitting on into the pitch, close to a Vilitian player who had scored a goal on a controversial play earlier in the match. 95X had argued the ball did not enter the goal, however the referee ruled it a goal and Marvin Stark insisted his team accept the decision and continue to play on.

Whittaker was immediately red-carded at 88:49, and the official awarded a direct free kick, leading to the winning goal for Vilita and Turori. The referee then went to the timekeeper's table, making a second move that would make it impossible for 95X to answer whatsoever: an order for the clock to continue running while "+0" was held up. The clock hit 90:00, and Vilita and Turori had their second victory over 95X in this AOCAF Cup 45 tournament.

Stark declined to comment on the conduct issue following the game, only stating that Whittaker would not suit up for the Third Place Match against Ko-oren. Team officials were observed speaking to Ratastani Police following the match. It is believed they were discussing the incident to determine if local laws were broken, however reporters and journalists were immediately ordered to leave the area on claims they had entered a restricted area.

Whittaker was playing his second AOCAF Cup for 95X, and plays domestically for the Mitchell Twins. Officials at the National Team Headquarters, Soccer League X Main Offices, and the Twins, all could not be reached by this story's deadline. We will have updates as this story progresses.

Year of the Firebird

Third time's the charm, they say. Tonight, Jermain Lewis' side will compete in the AOCAF Cup final, the third time the Firebirds have done so. The previous two both ended in convincing defeats to Pacitalia and tonight's opposition; Vilita & Turori. In all honesty, it's hard to see how a questionable Firebirds defence will stand up to a side that fired eight past Valanora in the quarter finals, and no matter what he says, Jermain Lewis will be thinking hard about how to make sure his side isn't humiliated again.

Last time he led the under 25s to an AOCAF final, six years ago, the squad contained current senior squad stars such as Nathaniel Doherty and Ezio Grassi, and they were thoroughly dismantled. A crushing 4-1 defeat in the final served as a reminder that Osarius was still not ready to sit at the top table in world football. A lot has changed since then. By some strange twist of fate, that crushing defeat ultimately led to the Firebirds' triumph in the first Confederations Cup. A victory that, while only in what is effectively an exhibition tournament, served as a catalyst. Since then, the Osarian national football team has risen to be ranked second in the world, and has received official recognition from the World Cup Committee for contribution to the sport over the past forty years.

These developments are certainly positives, and have vindicated the controversial decisions made by the late Lord Kenterbury, as well as his successor, to at times isolate Osarian club football from the rest of the multiverse. It's easy to forget that this rise to (not quite) the top has largely occurred over the past decade, after years of hard work laying foundations upon which current successes have been built. It's easy to forget that in many ways, the Firebirds are still the "new kids" at global football's top table. A fact not lost on Jermain Lewis. "We deserve to be here. We've had one or two hairy moments, but who hasn't? We know it's going to be tough, that's the whole point." The Osarius manager told a press conference last night. "But this belief that we're 'not ready' or whatever... it needs to stop. Twice in the past decade, our under 25s -- not even our full senior squad -- have earned the right to compete for a regional championship. Many of those young players have also played in World Cup semi finals. These are not kids who got lucky. We are not the plucky underdogs." Lewis' impassioned rallying cry comes as a reply to the Osarian media's constant doubting of his team's credentials, and will almost certainly form the foundation of his pre-match team talk in Ratastan tomorrow.

Despite some impressive performances from Vilita & Turori -- most notably the 8-3 goalfest against perennial favourites Valanora, which garnered mass media attention -- they've been difficult to analyse effectively this tournament. After a dominant showing in the group stage, going undefeated and conceding just once, they've been erratic. A narrow semi final victory over 95X, a crushing win over Valanora and an extra time result against Furellum. The only thing that has not been in question is their ability to score goals. A fact not lost on Osarius centre back and captain, Juan Pablo Rodriguez. "It'll be tough. They have top class forwards in Altariiz and Makakio, for example. And there's Eskiiy, who can change a game if you don't keep close enough attention on him." The Turic defender acknowledged the offensive threat of tonight's opposition candidly. "We're facing the most prolific team in the tournament, which might be the best way to finally win one. You know, since we don't usually have a reputation for defending well." He added, with a smile.

Interestingly enough, that's a perception slowly changing. The notion that Osarius are poor defensively was utterly disabused during last summer's World Cup, where they conceded just three times across seven games. All three goals coming after the quarter final stage. Assistant manager Georgina Carsley believes that the under 25s have the same capacity for brilliance, too. "These guys can do it. They just have to stay focused, and that's something we work on a lot with the younger players in particular now." Carsley would know what it takes. Aside from winning dozens of caps for the national team as a left back with a propensity for crunching tackles, she was a part of the Greeningham City side that routinely challenged Lewis' Firewood for trophies. "We were reckless on offense back then. It was entertaining, but it was almost always me making that last tackle. I was the only one the gaffer trusted not to lose their head and bomb forward. These guys need to understand that mentality. All four defenders have to focus, and then think and act as one. It's the only way to keep a team like the Eel-Cat Things at bay."

Another Match against 95X, Another Victory

Vilita & Turori 3 - 2 95X

RATXFORDSHIRE, RATASTAN :: When the fixtures for the AOCAF 45 Semi-Final were drawn and the Vilita & Turori Eel-Cat things were paired up once again with 95X, it was yet another chapter in a long rivalry between the two nations. Perhaps 'rivalry' was too strong a word.

It was yet another chapter in a long bean-stalk climbing endeavor for the nation of 95X. The AOCAF 22 Champions who, in the 20+ competition since their lone regional triumph, had been knocked off the beanstalk, and climbed back up, only to be knocked off once again, time and time again.

And so many times through the years, especially during the modern era, the mean old giant flicking them off the beanstalk came in the form of an Eel-Cat Thing. Of course, sometimes, Vilita & Turori had shown no mercy - like during the 7-0 romping when the two sides met during AOCAF 39. Other times, however, 95X actually put up a good fight. In fact, en route to their AOCAF 42 title, Vilita & Turori barely scraped pass Xi Foureleven and 95X, the match level at 2-2 after 120 minutes of action before the Eel-Cat things finally made it through on penalty kicks - eventually moving on to be crowned Champions.

95X's campaign in AOCAF 45, however, marked the highest they had climbed on the Bean Stalk since reaching the top during AOCAF 22. Naturally, it would be Vilita & Turori once again standing in their path. 'Rivalry' - it was more of a standing tradition. If it was a rivalry, at least from the Vilita & Turori perspective, it certainly wasn't a heated rivalry. More like a celebrated rivalry. The type of rivalry that made the fans breathe a sigh of a relief. After a difficult fixture against former World Champions Valanora, the Eel-Cat things now had a virtual free-pass through to the final. Of course, thats not the opinion that the 95Xers would have had going into the match, as they had a thorn in their side that they just couldn't get rid of and they had yet another shot at it.

The question is, which 95X team would show up? The AOCAF 39 team that lost 7-0 to the Eel-Cat things, or, the AOCAF 42 team that pushed Vilita & Turori to the brink.

Well, the answer was, it would be more of the latter. Despite a fast start - an early goal from Perran Adlani, and a second before half time from Tripate Falcon - 95X would fight back and in the closing minutes of the game it appeared it was headed down the same path - Extra Time.

Then, a bizarre incident involving 95X's Carl Whittaker set up Enluta Makakio for a direct free kick 30 yards out. In the closing seconds of the game, Makakio took the free kick low. It went under the wall and into the box. Trent Callahan dove down for what appeared to be a comfortable save when the ball just clipped the ankle of Wu Fivetwelve and redirected it into the back of the net, once again flicking 95X off the bean stalk and sending Vilita & Turori through to the AOCAF final for the first time since AOCAF 42.

Their opponents? The Firebirds of Osarius - the very same team the Eel-Cat things beat to lift AOCAF 42. The Firebirds will be looking for revenge - and their first AOCAF title - but the Eel-Cat things will not be in the mood for charity with regional supremacy and one step closer to Pacitalia's all-time AOCAF mark.

95X AOCAF 45 Final RP

Postby 95X » Fri Oct 10, 2014 4:15 pm

Xi waited no more than three minutes before she heard a loud thud elsewhere in her house. She raced herself out of her field to the main area of the house, where she saw the door to the room she pointed out to Floyd open, the room light on, and groaning sounds coming from inside.

Xi mentally prepared herself for possible battle, and quietly approached the door. She looked in, to see that Floyd had collapsed on the floor, unconscious, with a large bump on his forehead, and was making those sounds. There was no sign of foul play whatsoever.

"Floyd!" she screamed at him, but it was no use. He was out cold.

Xi called emergency services, who took Floyd to the hospital. Xi, who turned down taking the ambulance to the hospital with Floyd after being asked out by one of the paramedics, arrived by her own means an hour later, fighting through the press and overzealous fans who'd heard she was on her way there. Her dodgy agent had arrived shortly thereafter, who ordered the crowd home as Xi gave very stern looks him. They boarded the elevator to the appropriate floor.

They are greeted by the doctor on duty in the waiting area for the floor after NinetyFiveX showed his credentials. Dr. Hawthorne, an older man with greying hair, was reluctant to give them any information at first as neither were family nor team officials.

"For all intensive purposes," NinetyFiveX explains, "she IS family. And I personally handle millions of unsolicited requests for her a year, I'm as close to a 'team representative' as you're gonna get at this hour."

Dr. Hawthorne looked up, and realized he was either going to talk to some zany agent now, or a horde of pushy journalists later who ignored NinetyFiveX and simply waited across the street.

"He has suffered a serious concussion from falling due to an undiagnosed cardiovascular condition."

Xi sank into a chair in the floor's waiting room, folded over and covered her face with her hands.

"Sounds serious," NinetyFiveX obliviously stated the obvious. "Main question is will he play competitive sports again?"

"No," Dr. Hawthorne answered, motioning that the discussion was over and he needed to get back to his patients.

NinetyFiveX walked over to the chair in a vain attempt to console the very sad woman that occupied it. Before he could get close, Xi swatted him away. She wanted to hide that she'd been crying, but knew she couldn't.

"I once had a crush on him," Xi admitted. She emptied a box of tissue paper, attempting to regain her dignity and composure, as NinetyFiveX went to spin the story to the reporters outside.

Xi got up and made her way to another wing of the hospital, a residential wing where she strangely knew most of the staff. Her appearance wasn't a shock yet it seemed surprising. Handling formalities, she is ushered to a private room where a patient lied in a bed connected to various tracking machines.

"He was just bathed, Ms. Foureleven," a nurse told her as she made a routine readings check and left the room.

Xi stood there, running her fingers through his black hair. Heart rate, unchanged. Brain activity, unchanged. The patient had no ability to process what was going on and continued breathing deeply, the only function he could perform on his own.

"I know you do not know what a birthday is, who I am, or that I missed it," Xi said softly as she kissed his forehead. "But you will always be important to me."

The name on the bed, on a somewhat permanent identifying chart: "Ryan Foureleven."
