Welcome to the nineteenth edition of the Copa Rushmori, for all your Rushmori international competition needs.

BID POST

The nineteenth edition is to be hosted right here in the home of the reigning champions; the Federation of Polar Islandstates, and we hope you'll all enjoy your stay here. Staying here presents its own problems and challenges for your teams, and full IC details will be provided below, along with stadium information. I will also be available via TG for any questions you may have.

Again, as mentioned previously in my bid post, all nations taking part will have a "Team Liaison Officer" who you may take as written is a junior official or work experience kid in the FPIFA who has been trained to speak your nation's language fluently and can act as an interpreter or what have you. Should you wish to RP them as one of the background characters you will have full GodMod powers over them beyond the name/age/gender I give you. Blame them for bad results, paint them as some kind of latter day saint, kill them and throw them in the team jacuzzi as an offer to your gods, whatever. It'd be up to you how much to include them, if at all. There will be no penalty for not including them, they are just there as a catalyst should you want/require one. They are as follows:

1. Valladares - Vlad Fure (42, Male)
2. Alianza Albos - Adalbjorn Hadamczik (38, Male)
3. Saintland - Vagn Migerka (41, Male)
4. Vjaalsburg - Gudjon Rasmussen (22, Male)
5. Sicoutimont - Julia Akhatova (25, Female)
6. Darmen - Dominik Julson (28, Male)
7. Dixhuitiles - Harriet Pronin (38, Female)
8. Norrehavn - Jesper Dityatev (19, Male)
9. Taeshan - Victoria Borg (41, Female)
10. Oberour Ar Moro - Linus Laake (46, Male)
11. Saugeais - Igor Dozhdalev (38, Male)
12. Sarrbia - Nicola Sinkovich (39, Female)
13. Stvoto Latoli - Steingrimur Volle (34, Male)
14. Sargossa - Iulian Kalmari (62, Male)
15. Zenic - Valbjorn Nylander (55, Male)
16. Eura - Artemiusz Skobelov (54, Male)
17. The Kytler Peninsulae - Dina Grundvig (37, Female)
18. Polar Islandstates - Isaac Tengstrom (36, Male)
19. Eastern Sunrise Islands - Magnus Ogienko (39, Male)
20. Eastfield Lodge - Serge Sobotka (40, Male)
21. Kernansquillec - Desa Nilsmark (53, Female)
22. Isula ĝe Ru - Anneka Bau (60, Female)
23. Dulaanluut - Einar Mensen (53, Male)
24. Dutch Semarland - Mikko Kovlun (55, Male)
25. New Ponyville - Danii Niekisch (35, Female)
26. Filopines - Diedrich Havn (50, Male)
27. Salchar - Kirsten Vigen (41, Female)
28. Mapletish - Denis Veum (35, Male)
29. Bissone - Jonatan Hoiland (43, Male)
30. Mareibat - Dana Korhonen (44, Female)
31. Falcus - Diedrich Halvorsen (28, Male)
32. Pravenna - Frida Schmidt (36, Female)
33. Electrum - Ingeborg Ovesen (34, Female)
34. Pasarga - Dmitry Ersland (19, Male)
35. Sameba - Darla Wawrinka (20, Female)
36. Olastor - Andriy Kragh (29, Male)

As you can see, thirty-six teams means a slight compromise on the format I planned to use. The thirty-six teams will be split into six groups of six teams each. The top two of each group will be guaranteed progress to the round of sixteen, making twelve teams through with four spots remaining. The six third placed teams will then be ranked 1-6 based on group stage performance to determine the four teams that go through as best placed runners up, with RP bonus being a last, final tiebreaker if required. The teams in the round of sixteen will then be ranked again 1-16 based on group stage performance, and 1-16 based on RP bonus so far, and the average of the two ranks used to seed the teams. Seed #1 will then play #16 and so on, with the knockout rounds all planned and drawn out so that on paper the #1 and #2 seeds would in theory meet in the final.

An Introduction to the Federation of Polar Islandstates for Copa Rushmori XIX
by Dima Koolhaas, FPIFA President

First of all, welcome back to the Federation. We at the FPIFA are thrilled to be hosting the nineteenth edition of our esteemed regional competition, and it feels like only yesterday I was welcoming you all here for the twelfth. Nations and people will be visiting us from all over Rushmore, and whilst as holders of the trophy we hope to keep the silverware here with us, we certainly look forward to the competition. As you may or may not be aware, this edition is a little bit special for us, as it comes thirty-five years after the Sutherland Treaty - the initial document signed by representatives of Franz Josef, Norscelt, Svalbard, and Victorrinn that brought the Federation of Polar Islandstates into existence for the first time. As such, these four states are going to be hosting all matches in the tournament, and their people are looking forwards to it immensely.

AN HISTORIC BACKGROUND
The Federation of Polar Islandstates is a nation in the far north of Rushmore that has existed long in the minds of its citizens, and not so long in terms of being a legally established nation. As a region, the many islands that make up this northern area of Rushmore known locally as Valhalla have always shared a sense of camaraderie and sense of togetherness, even when at war with each other. Anthropologists aren't certain, but the original breeding grounds for the neanderthals that would evolve into the Valhallans you see walking around you today appears to have been in the archipelago known today as Aleutia. Assisted by the seasonal pack ice that appeared in the much harsher winters they had during pre-history, these nomadic tribes would colonise much of the main 'chain' of islands that makes up the Federation today. Once they had developed enough to construct boats, favourable currents were responsible for the discovery and colonisation of the more distant outposts of Külmsaar, Terra Scotia, Landt Sibir, and Northbrook. It was during this time also that the area of Kuril was cut off for centuries at a time, leading to the slightly different customs we see there today.

As time developed the people and the lands, the Old Valhallans began to club together. The old royal houses of Surtsey, Grímsey, Jan Mayen, and Bjarnarey were amongst the first to see the benefits in alliance, and they formed a suspicious but strong entente that would form a ring of prosperity around the Norscelt Sea called; Norscelt. Natch. It was around this time that the houses of the newly unified Svalbard, Franz Josef, and Axel Heiburg fell into a tumultuous war that would last for decades in a fiercely political and tense dispute over waters between the three - this became known as The War of the The Sea of Three Kingdoms. Meanwhile, Victorrinn established itself as a dominant naval power in the East that unintentionally protected the nearby kingdoms of Hans, Melville, Aleutia, as well as the shipping routes to the Ellismare Empire, Grenlund, and Terra Scotia. In the far west, the archipelagos of Markii, Orkness, and Shodtlundt overthrew their royal lines and became republics.

The all-powerful Jarls of Zemlya waged a war in the name of conquest that unified the kingdoms of Severny, Yuzhny, Devon Islands, and Zemlya, and created a power to the west of Axel Heiburg that could not be ignored, shaking the balance of the three way stalemate and kickstarting a series of political processes that would ultimately result in peace between the nations in the mid-east of Valhalla. It was also around this time that Nunivak secured independence from Ellismare. Half a century later, only the tiny principality of Bleak Rock maintained any attempt at a monarchy of any sort, and the stage was set for people of Valhalla to finally unify their nations.

The first treaty of significance was that of peace and trade between Svalbard and Franz Josef, kickstarting the Valhallan Union. Soon, the rest of the islands in the region joined as well, with Terra Scotia and Kuril the last nations to subscribe to the idea of a powerful regional union. Külmsaar finally decided on an independence from Sargossa and signed a treaty of co-operation with Terra Scotia, the two small nations becoming an associate member of the Valhallan Union rather than being full members, the same deal as was extended to Kuril one year later.

The general movement seemed to be heading in only one direction however, and idea of a full Federal union was first put forward and acted upon by the leaders of Norscelt, Victorrinn, Franz Josef, and Svalbard, and it is these original four states that are represented by the four green triangles on the flag. Just thirty-five years after signing a peace treaty, the nations of Franz Josef and Svalbard were to be linked in law. The Sutherland Treaty was signed in the small Victorrinn town of Sutherland, and this tournament will kick off ceremoniously with Polar Islandstates in the first match in Sutherland, by way of marking the occasion. As previously mentioned, it is these four states that will host all of the matches in the tournament. Four nations went into the talks at Sutherland, and one nation came out. The Valhallan Union had a new, powerful member.

Franz Josef City was, and still is, the largest city in the states, and so it became the de facto capital of the fledgling nation. Unwilling to join the Federation during the original talks, the nations of Novaya Zemlya, Northbrook, Axel Heiburg, Aleutia, a unified Hans and Melville, and Landt Sibir were quick to notice the strength that the unity was bringing the original four states, and less than four years later they had all became the second wave of participatory states in what was a huge expansion for the Federation. Although the name of the area - Valhalla - was mooted as a potential name for the Federation during the original talks, the non-participatory states lobbied strongly against the move, believing that it would poke holes in the foundations of their own national identities, and so the Federation of Polar Islandstates it would remain.

However, as the years passed, and the individual quangos from each state began to merge to form powerful federal institutions, the other nations in the Valhallan Union began to see the benefits of inclusion in the Federation, and another wave of expansion was initiated. The composite state of Farosea joined, formed by the unification of the republics of Markii, Orkness, and Shodtlundt, as well the associated nation of Bleak Rock. The south-eastern states of Nunivak, Ellismare, and Grenlund all joined on the same day one year after Farosea, followed three days later by the western states of Sakhalin, St Lawrence, Kuril Arkhipelgo. It was with this wealth of people, expertise, and for the first time, Valhalla-wide political agreement, that the nation threw its weight fully behind participation in Rushmori politics, and it has since developed into one of the powers of the region, finding strong allies in the nations of Astograth, Civil Citizenry, Eura, and Cotdelapoms, to name but a few.

Begrudgingly, the independent state of Bleak Rock also entered into an agreement with the Federation at this time, such that it would retain independence and the power to control its own internal affairs, whilst also sharing many of its services with the state of Farosea and allowing concessions towards the people and businesses of the Federation. Under the protection of the Federation, the island has turned into a prosperous micro-state, and relationships between the two nations are strong, with a fierce and friendly sporting rivalry. The inclusion of Kuril Arkhipelago was another one without a certain lack of controversy, as many Polarians and old Valhallans, untrusting of the arkhipelago's famous isolationism, believed the state would leech from the Federation as a whole. Whilst keeping their distance in certain realms, these fears have gone unfounded on the whole however, and the issue is nowhere near as contentious as that of Külmsaar.

The southernmost state in the Federation, Külmsaar and Terra Scotia, was torn apart when the islands of Külmsaar were invaded by Sargossan forces. The islands are divided now, with West Külmsaar rejoining Sargossan rule, and the islands of East Külmsaar becoming a member nation in the Valhallan Union, with many powers shared with the neighbouring islands of Terra Scotia; who are themselves still a state in the Federation. Recently, we have also seen the addition of The Fallenmark Islands and Cairnskillen to the Valhallan Union, making a powerful Oygruppen alliance of five sovereign nations; Bleak Rock, Polar Islandstates, The Fallenmark Islands, Cairnskillen, and East Külmsaar.

Today, the Federation of Polar Islandstates is a powerful and growing nation, full of states that only differ slightly from the rules and laws set by the federal government, is full of happy Valhallans, and has four states in particularly who are today straining at the bit to get on with the opportunity presented to them by hosting the Copa. Known for design and industry, the Federation's style, architecture, design, graphics, and lifestyle are all famed and celebrated in many nations around Rushmore. Our companies are strong, our land is dynamic, our islands are alive, and our people are ready. Welcome to the Federation.

GETTING AROUND
Transport links in the Federation are plentiful, with each town having an extensive bus and tramlink system, with Franz Josef City itself enjoying the presence of the famous Rotmettransit; an extensively developed tramlink system that goes both above and below ground. Further interesting transport can be found in place such as Jan Mayen, where cable-cars can move you up and down the extinct volcano on which the city is based with ease, or Bjarnarey, where fleets of boats and canal taxis can move you between the many jetties, piers, and quays that make up the floating town. More information on travel around the towns and cities can be obtained from your Team Liaison Officer. Inter-state, transport is ably provided by fleets of ferries, planes, and helicopters, which during the summer months this tournament is being held in will all be untroubled by harsh weather patterns and pack ice. Nonetheless, teams of iceberg spotters and icebreakers will be at work throughout the tournament. The transport is all subsidised by the federal government, and so fares will be relatively cheap. Taxis are plentiful should you require one, and whilst it is not anticipated that many will use hire cars during the tournament, information for visitors that wish to drive in the Federation can consult their Team Liaison Officer or hotel concierge, who will be happy to help.

FOOD AND DRINK
Valhallans are a hardy bunch, tall and lithe, and so it will come as surprise to few that their diet is traditionally very healthy, if hearty. Simple meals will dominate the menus at the plentiful bars and restaurants, with fish and potatoes, cooked in a huge variety and combination of different of ways being a particular favourite. Also try such regional delicacies as shellfish, walrus, kelp, and a wholesome hash of spiced root vegetables and leftover meats called 'pytt i panna', eaten nationwide in varying recipes - every family will have a particular recipe that has been handed down through the generations - often with egg and pickled accompaniments. Our cakes and pastries are excellent, and they can be found at most coffee-houses, such as Huytspurr. Taxes are relatively high in the Federation, allowing for such things as cheap transport and free healthcare, and whilst most of this is made up through the wages of those who work in the nation, some of it is gained through amenities such as places to eat and drink. Therefore, the prices at bars and restaurants may be viewed as expensive to some, for alcohol in particular. Speaking of alcohol, try our famous spirit, 'Seasogs', and the ubiquitous ale, 'Grogg'. Many alcoholic drinks remain specific to towns or states however, and so it is best to check the local shops for what is popular with the locals. Despite this, Grogg and Seasogs are the official drinks of the finals, and will be available at heavily discounted prices at every stadium and fan-park across the four states.

ACCOMMODATION AND ENTERTAINMENT
Tourism in the Federation has undergone a recent boom, and as such is currently enjoying an abundance of place to stay, from the five star hotel to the bed and breakfast, or even the humble hostel. Whilst 'suffering' from the high taxes that can be found in the food industry, there are a great deal of guest houses and hotels in the Federation, all maintained and inspected to high standards. As an additional bonus, those booking with a ticket for any game can quote the ticket number and receive a heavy discount on the regular room price, subsidised by the state governments' pockets. Entertainment in the nation is plentiful, with many towns celebrating their local music scene on a daily basis. Theatres and art galleries are common, and with the recently burgeoning interest in tracing family histories, the nation has seen a huge amount of local history museums open, so for those interested in sampling the cultural attractions the Federation has to offer, there will be plenty of options. Or, if you simply want to dance the night away, the relaxation of drinking laws has seen a rise in the popularity of nightclubs.

STAYING INSIDE THE LAW
In the Federation of Polar Islandstates, there are few laws that you would find unusual in your own nation with regards to abuse, bodily harm, murder, theft, intimidation, assault, etc... Public urination carries an instant on the spot fine in all states, as does vomiting in public should the individual responsible be unable to express remorse or offer explanation. Police officers are trained to be understanding and will listen in any situation, as well as being keen to offer assistance if the situation can be resolved on the spot without court action. If matters do go to court, sentences and fines are strict and harsh, so an on the spot resolution is almost always the preferred solution for all parties involved. Almost all recreational drugs are permitted for personal use in private or rented property so long as all paraphernalia is dealt with properly, and can be purchased in safe quantities from certified outlets. Street dealing is forbidden however, and any person found to be abusing these laws will be dealt with harshly. Alcohol and caffeine are normally the only drugs permitted to be used in public places, and this will remain the case during the finals in all stadia and towns. However, in fan-parks there will be relaxations of the rules that will allow the consumption of marijuana and tobacco in certain and specific areas. Look for signage. With crowds inevitably come troublemakers, and additional numbers of police officers will be present on the streets, as well as CCTV operators in their control centres. Interpreters for all languages spoken by visiting nations will be available at all emergency services.

LANGUAGE, CURRENCY, HEALTHCARE
The national language of the Federation is Valhallan, or Polarian as the rest of Rushmore has come to know it as, a subtle language based on a large range of ancient dialects from across the region. The basics are easy enough to pick up, but it isn't the easiest language for the foreigner to master, though any attempt to make yourself understood in the language will be greatly appreciated and warmly received by any Polarian host. However, English is broadly spoken across the nation, and is a mandatory subject in the education system as long as the individual remains in compulsory education, age 18. Interpreters for all languages and literature and signage in most common languages will be present at all fan-parks however, and it is anticipated that there will be very few problems in this area. All the same, here are a few phrases that you may find useful.
Hello - Hallo
Good morning - God morgen
Good evening - God kveld
Goodbye - Ha det
Please - Vänligen
Thank you - Takk
Which way to the stadium? - Som vägen till stadion?
Could I have the bill, please? - Kan jag få notan, takk?
Excuse me, I am lost. - Anteeksi, olen menettänyt
Which way to the fan-park? - Vilken väg till fan-park?
A pint of Grogg, please. - Ein pint Grogg, takk?
I feel unwell. - Voin pahoin
I need help. - Jeg trenger hjelp
Long live the Federation! - Lenge leve Federation!

The currency unit is the sol. One hundred pfennigs make a sol. Represented by the symbol $, the sol is a relatively strong currency. Expect to pay between $5-7 for a pint of Grogg or other ale, between $30-50 for a decent meal for two in an average restaurant, $2-3 for a takeaway cup of coffee, and between $30-40 for a night at a three-star hotel.

Healthcare in the Federation is provided by the all-reaching arms of the FPIHS and is free for residents, with only a few of the rare treatments requiring much more than a token gesture of supplementary payment from patients. Healthcare for visitors during the tournament will be free on a reactionary basis. Healthcare that is required as a result of ailments picked up or received during your stay in the nation will be provided free upon presentation of a valid passport. Those patients requiring regular medical treatment will be treated if prescriptions and medical information has been passed on to us by you or your health service prior to the finals starting. Arrangements have been made by the FPIHS with the embassies of all participating nations, and visitors are advised to get in touch with their respective embassies for further details. These treatments will be administered to you by us on the behalf of your own health service, and will not affect your usual payments or otherwise to your own health service. Any attempt to deceive the authorities will be looked upon poorly, and the free care for visitors will only be available for the duration of the finals.

EMERGENCY NUMBER
The emergency number for all services in the Federation is 111. Dial this, and an operator will ask you which primary service you require. The options are coastguard, police, ambulance, and fire service. Any other service that may also be required will be automatically be requested by the operator you are transferred to, but as a rule the coastguard are equipped to handle all fire, immigration, smuggling, and health issues that may arise at sea or on rural coastlines. For built-up coastline areas such as docksides or jetties, opt for the other three services. Harbours and military installations are treated as an asset of the military, and will be policed by the Harbour Guard; the Valhallan Navy's military police wing.

WEATHER
As you may have guessed, we are way up in the north of Rushmore, lying inside the Arctic Circle. This tournament will be taking place during our summer. As such, whilst temperatures will be low on the whole, the sun will last all day for the entirety of the tournament, and temperatures will never drop too far below zero. Visitors should prepare to wrap up warm though, as the weather is expected to be full of clear anti-cyclones for the duration of the tournament.

SPORT
Sport in keenly followed in the Federation, and football is the most popular sport. Should visitors wish, they could also attend one of many other sports. The domestic seasons for rugby league, rugby union, football, and handball will all be ongoing, and the playoffs for the ice hockey will still be going on. The peoples' sport of Veggball will also still be in full swing. Polarian club sides have enjoyed success across the years in many sports, and international fans making the trip to the Copa may wish to make a day trip off to one of the states not hosting games in order to make a pilgrimage to a team benefiting from a long-held soft-spot.

HOST CITIES AND STADIA
Host States - As marked in the below map:
Image
Fan-parks – Situated in the area around each of the many host stadiums will be a fan-park. Intended for use by those fans who have been unable to procure tickets for their nation’s matches, and for amicable mingling of fans in between matches, the fan-parks are a great place to meet other fans and will see the best offers on food and drink across the nation for the duration of the games. Those fan parks placed around the smaller stadia in use at the tournament are particularly well equipped for the many ticket-less fans it is anticipated we will see. Also, in the streets around the fan-parks, see if you can spot all 36 “nationballs” of the nations playing in the tournament. Designed by prominent blogger Efraim Felix Forsberg and developed by the Rose Guild design partnership, these balls are part of the official graphic presence for the tournament, and one for each nation has been placed around each stadium and fan park, so see if you can spot them!

FRANZ JOSEF

Whether it's the tiny, picturesque, channel islands of Brighthelmstone, or the hustling, bustling, cosmopolitan metropolis of Franz Josef City, Franz Josef, as the state of the capital city of the Federation, has something for everyone. The capital is the seat of much of the nation's diplomatic and governmental institutions, as well as two of the biggest football clubs in Rushmore in the form of East Franz Athletic and SK Franz Josef City. The homes of SK Nasjonale Hauker and FKRA Norregaard are also included in the host stadia for the Copa, but the final itself will of course be held in the Nasjonale Stadion, the home of the famous Terns. The capital has much to offer, of course, including the bustling Kungsdocks port district, but if you fancy a calmer pace of life then you can head out to the satellite towns; such as the university town of Sogne, or the little farther afield Orkhanger, home to many famed distilleries.

It is the most built up state in the Federation, and features many towns whose growth is thanks mainly to the extensive rail and road links that the state benefits from. The beating financial heart of Kindshavn is one such town, as are the growing seats of Moss-Rygge and Rässinger. All are pleasant and cultured modern towns whose people are looking forward to hosting you all, with all the traditional attractions of a Valhallan welcome. Towards the edges of the state we also see towns like Waldenøya and Neuerlatz, or even Kiel, whose position towards the more open waters of the Valhallan oceans made them valuable naval bases once upon a time. Now, in this time of peace, the military work is left to bigger ports, and the towns have resolved back to a nice industrial base with lots of lovely parks for you to enjoy.

NORSCELT
Image

Four ancient royal houses combined to create the seafaring nation of Norscelt a long time ago. Four outcrops of volcanic rock, long dormant hotspots, and harsh granite outcrops make up these islands, and their landscape is every bit as dynamic as the people are. From Bielstrich to the fishing town of Alejavik, the city of Jan Mayen sits proudly on the sides of an extinct volcano. Despite being just about the largest city in the state, is isn't the capital, but the famous seafront of bars and world-class restaurants, called the Crescent, is one of the biggest attractions in the state - to say nothing of the stunning views from the top of the funicular railway up the volcano. Deep in the south of the state is Bjarnarey and it's suburb Hove. An utterly unique town, Bjarnarey itself is a series of floating pontoons, piers, and jetties that sit in the sheltered Bjarnese lagoon with only the most precarious of perches attached to the inhospitable shale islands that form a ring around the lagoon. The whole town floats, including the stadium, and many visitors - even those without games at The Barge - may want to make a trip to catch a glimpse of the unique Bjarnese way of life.

Towards the north-west of the state are the islands of Surtsey and Grímsey. These have a more interlinked history than the other two islands, having frequently been at war over the territorial islands and waters in the Holtrecht Passage. Holtrecht today is a town that shows these old battlescars in its fractured town grid, and it makes for a fascinating history lesson. The industrial powerhouse of Surtsey is beaten only by Jan Mayen in terms of size in the state, with the fishing town of Friedrichsund on the south of the island having made good use of the fertile fishing grounds to the south of it over the centuries. Grímsey meanwhile is the capital and beating financial centre of the state, with a thriving import and export industry, even if the goods don't stay for very long in its port.

SVALBARD
Image

A state forged by a union of six former kingdoms, Svalbard's dramatic ranges of hills and crags have created a vast array of natural deepwater harbours and precariously perched towns. A wild and windswept landscape, the relative lack of trees forced a history of trade and barter, but the rich and abundant ores made the state one of the richest in the Valhallan Union prior to the Federation being founded. A long history of war with Franz Josef has meant that the towns in the north-east never really grew to much - the exception being the still heavily fortified Møllna-Grei. The majority of the big towns, including the capital, are towards the south of the state. Longyearbyen, Barentsberg, and Spitsbergen are the biggest three towns in the state, with the capital in particular being a large and bustling industrial powerhouse with many attractive districts. Spitsbergen's dramatic cliffside views and Barentsberg's many towers and spires only complement Svalbard's varied attractions.

The small fishertown of St Gallen is absolutely sports mad, whilst the western town of Larsen Bay is famous for the thunderstorms that naturally occur there. A short drive from Larsen Bay is the historic university town of Geidenheim. Whilst not featured in this tournament, Geidenheim is well worth a visit. In the south there is the beautiful monastery town of Solovetsky, famous for its extensive history of being the seat of Christianity in the Valhallan Union, whilst the town of Svenskøya is notable for being altogether too small to support two football clubs, and yet somehow manages to do just that. Only one is hosting games at this tournament however. And then, right in the middle, there is the town of Eilinn Pass; located in the only flat land between two narrow sea inlets and two huge mountainous outcrops. A tactical stronghold, it holds a great deal of history within its grey city walls.

VICTORRINN
Image
(Click for larger)
Victorrinn, once it saw the union of Aasiaat and Resolute, had always been something of a lone wolf. Leaving Axel Heiburg, Svalbard and Franz Josef to their tiff, it focused on building its own naval resources. Consequently, it was left well alone. Once the time for peace came, Victorrinn was a crucial ally to the other Valhallan nations, and a hugely important piece in the jigsaw that was the formation of the Federation. The forge town of Sutherland wasn't just the location for the Treaty being signed, it was a representation of the large military wealth of Victorrinn that the Federation needed on its side to provide security and stability to make it an attractive proposition. The first match of the tournament, featuring the Terns, will ceremonially take place at The Foundry, Sutherland, a stadium with a mere 3,456 capacity. Of course, once the precedent for small stadia had been set, the other smaller clubs wanted in, creating the vast array of stadia both large and small you see at this tournament.

Another former garrison town, Cape Somerville, has long been known as one of the prime locations for espionage headquarters in the state thanks to it's proximity to the former warring Franz Josef and Svalbard. McAvery, likewise, has thrown off its former military leanings, but the state capital and largest city, Aasiaat, has remained a military town, and is to this very day the home port of the might of the entire Valhallan Navy. It is also known for being the site of the oldest football club in the Federation still in existence - Sporting Club Aasiaat 87. Across the water from Aasiaat is the famous and historic rival town of Resolute, with an extensive deepwater harbour of its own and today the location for most of the Navy's training corps. Shipbuilding is extensive in the state, as you might expect, whilst one of the fishertowns in the tournament, Skarpnack, is nestled in an inlet that features as the only runoff for one of the largest lakes in the Federation - by depth, area, and volume.

TICKETS
Tickets will be made available for fans of both nations, with each appropriate FA awarded 35% of the stadium capacity for each match to sell on to its respective fans. For group stage matches, visitors should contact their own FA before leaving for the Federation. Should your nation advance to the knock out stages, stay tuned for notices at fan-parks and on the news for how to get your hands on a ticket. Black market selling will absolutely not be tolerated, and every step has been taken to ensure the tickets are almost impossible both to forge, and to pass on without cancelling the previous ticket first.

GOOD LUCK, AND WE HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR STAY!
Our land may be of ice, but our hearts are full of warmth.

STAFF:
Manager: Morten Rasmussen, 64
Record in Charge: P 176, W 138, D 23, L 15, GF 377, GA 140, GD +237, WP 78%
After guiding the Terns to three finals in a row, including finally lifting the World Cup trophy, Rasmussen's streak was broken in the Free Republics and the Terns came third. Despite the record fourth Copa Rushmori title last time around however, the Terns slumped to a second round defeat on penalties to eventual winners The Holy Empire at the last World Cup. Sure, you may scoff at the use of the word 'slumped', but for the high standards of former FC Axel Heiburg boss Morten Rasmussen, this is a result that he needs to improve upon next time around. He has been a revelation in his tenure so far - two of his fifteen defeats in charge of the Terns have been in the World Cup final - but with the hardcore of the team that lifted the World Cup trophy now retired or ageing, the time for revolution is now. Only eleven players have retained their spots from the World Cup roster, with eight uncapped players coming in for their first taste of senior international football. This is a phenomenally inexperienced squad by Rasmussen's standards - only captain Kohev Küngas-Vaga has over a hundred caps - and he will be looking to them to step up to the plate with home advantage on their side to beat the rest of Rushmore once again, retain the trophy on home soil, and make their case for a World Cup berth. Heia Terns!

Assistant Manager: Iulian Finnibaturinn, 41
With the departure of Steffan Pekarik, Rasmussen turned to Surtsey Island Gulls coach Finnibaturinn to fill the seat to the right of him in the dugout. Finnibaturinn played for the Terns a huge ninety-seven times - four times as captain - scoring four goals in the process. He might have retired just before Rasmussen took charge of the Terns, but that doesn't mean he was ever unknown to his new boss, with Rasmussen trying to sign him several times whilst FC Axel Heiburg manager. Pekarik was a born winner, and a tough fighter, and it is thought that Rasmussen has brought in Finnibaturinn because he shares those exact attributes. Once thought of as down and out, he fought his way back into the Terns squad after having found himself at imploded league after imploded league, with a move back to Surtsey and a Champions' Cup medal at Urbizania Wanderers to show for his efforts. Never gave up as a player, and doesn't do so as a coach either. An inspired appointment from Rasmussen.

PLAYERS:
#1 - GK - Leif Ulsletten - Age 26 - Image Red Star Severny Image - 11 Caps, 1 Assist
Originally making it into a Copa squad thanks to Alexis Sand carrying a minor niggle, Rasmussen has once again used the Copa to turn to Red Star goalkeeper Ulsletten and give him a promotion. This time, it is into the number one jersey. Iulian Kirilaunen is expected to still be first choice by the time the World Cup rolls around, but with him being rested for this tournament it is the ideal time for Ulsletten to take what he's learned whilst being an integral part of Red Star's surge up the league and apply it to international goalkeeping. Fast, nimble, and with excellent distribution - Kirilaunen's one big weakness - his long throws can often be the first line of attack for his sides, as proved by his assist. This is his first big test for the Terns, and it has been hypothesised by some pundits that the only reason Nordenberg and Küngas-Vaga were both retained for this squad was to give Ulsletten a decent chance of impressing.

#2 - DR - Vauxhall Jansen - Age 25 - Image Makosile United (VIL) Image - 12 Caps, 3 Assists, 1 Goal
With a smattering of Wightling heritage, Bjarnese-born Jansen is one of the more jetsetting members of the squad, having travelled to the Vilitan league to play for first Inland Peaks, and now Makosile United. With a huge amount of raw talent, Vauxhall Jansen is just that - raw. Is capable of playing on either flank if asked to do so, and his vision for a pass and game-reading going forwards is excellent. His tackling can still leave something to be desired however, and Rasmussen will be hoping the prospect of playing on home soil for his country will hone his concentration and turn him into a player who can fulfil the potential he so clearly has. If things go well, this will be hailed as a master-stroke by Rasmussen. If not, he'll go back to being thought of as a wild card with a silly name. Which, let's be honest, he does have. Bloody Wightlings.

#3 - DC - Aapo Nordenberg - Age 29 - Image Northbrook Diamonds FK Image - 82 Caps, 2 Assists, 6 Goals - Vice-Captain
Oyen-Spekke's retirement left a gap at centre-back that Rasmussen could have filled with any one of the many talented centre-backs that the nation is awash with at the moment. In the end, he opted for the player who was brought from FC Torshavn to East Franz Athletic to replace Oyen-Spekke there as well. Nordenberg had previously found it easy to slip under the radar and avoid the hype, though at East Franz his quietly impressive performances changed that, and he was sold to Ituraitz FC in order to balance the books; where he excelled. The implosion of the Astograthian league saw the Spires attempt to re-sign the player, but it was Northbrook's bid that tempted him more, and he joins his club captain Kohev Küngas-Vaga in the Terns back four now. Quiet, considered, and a scholar of the game, his game reading is excellent, meaning he is often able to make a challenge and prevent a dangerous situation before it even materialises. This lack of eye-catching last minute tackles contributes towards his relatively low-key profile, though they are of course also indicative of his ability to stop them being necessary in the first place. Tall, strong, and with a fine touch, Nordenberg is one of the ball-playing central defenders that are now becoming the vogue around the leagues. An instrumental part of the World Cup winning squad and at the peak of his abilities right now.

#4 - DC - Willem Otkupshchikov - Age 26 - Image Gwinevra Barbarians (APX) Image - 13 Caps, 1 Assist, 1 Goal
Otkupshchikov represents one of those rare success stories where a player can grow and mature way down the leagues with a lesser team before a bigger team notices him and takes a chance on him, only to see said player blossom on the bigger stage and totally steal the limelight. Otkupshchikov did just that at Bjarnarey after having spent the first four years of his career Divisjon-jumping with Waldenoya Bears, and he now finds himself pinched across to Apox to play for Gwinevra Barbarians under the direct tutelage of Terns legend Jorgen Hauge. Even better, Morten Salo being rested has given Otkupshchikov a chance in the starting line-up it is expected he will leap at. Tall, solid, and with an incredible work ethic, you won't see Otkupshchikov popping up in the opposition box much, but you will always be able to rely on him to be in the right place at the right time in his own box.

#5 - DL - Kohev Küngas-Vaga - Age 33 - Image Northbrook Diamonds FK Image - 205 Caps, 37 Assists, 20 Goals - CAPTAIN
This defender is well known and trusted by just about the entire nation, and after having taken the armband after the retirement of Alexsandr van Sorensen, Kohev will forever go down in history as the Terns' first World Cup winning skipper. As captain for club and country, he is a combative and battling left-back, though he is a talented centre back and defensive midfielder as well, and this enthusiasm and adaptability is something that Rasmussen will be able to make good use of. Originally moving to the first team as a result of Edvar Folke's previous hamstring tear, his athleticism was called upon to offer support and attacks from down the left side, and he later ousted the SK defender from the starting XI entirely. One of the youngest players to ever move past a hundred caps for his country, he has moved past his second century and has made the big announcement that his next World Cup will be his last for the Terns. So, this is one of the last chances for home fans to see him in action.

#6 - DMC - Anders Holzhauser - Age 25 - Image Northbrook Diamonds FK Image - 47 Caps, 7 Assists, 4 Goals
It took two consecutive Copa appearances for Holzhauser to provide performances good enough to convince Rasmussen, but he's been along in every Terns squad ever since. Holzhauser is a strong and tough-tackling defensive midfielder, and has made quite an impact on Rasmussen. With a commanding presence, he quickly grabs the eye as he marshals the defence behind him, and though he is able to fill in at centre back should he be required to, Holzhauser has the urge and the ability to push forwards in possession of the ball and add a different dimension to the attack in the process. All this international exposure was bound to create a big move for him eventually however, and he now turns out for Divisjon One champions Northbrook Diamonds FK, who splashed the cash necessary to get Issington to part with one of their prized assets. Fans already think him cheap at twice the price.

#7 - MC - Bjorn Konigstein - Age 25 - Image SK Franz Josef City Image - 53 Caps, 12 Assists, 8 Goals
With all the money at SK's disposal and all the attraction of playing for the biggest club in the Federation, they can pretty much bring in whoever they want. How remarkable, therefore, that the diminutive Bjorn Konigstein has fought his way through the youth academy and has been commanding a place in the starting line-up for years now. Full of enthusiasm and energy, he's got a sort of magnetic presence on the pitch that just seems to draw the ball towards him, and he is adept at launching forwards and finishing attacks with a sweet strike from the edge of the area in his role as a classic box-to-box midfielder. As with many players, Rasmussen was impressed with his performances during a test run at a Copa, and as such he's now here to stay as one of 'the retained players' intended to guide the new guys. A real talent.

#8 - MC - Eidur Gunnlaugsson - Age 20 - Image FC Axel Heiburg Image - Uncapped
It takes a special kind of talent to get called up into the starting line-up of the Terns aged just twenty years old, that is just what Eidur Gunnlaugsson is. The famed Haapa-Mechelin Youth Academy of Axel Heiburg has had something of a dry spell in terms of output recently, but Gunnlaugsson's emergence turns that on its head. Already one of the first names on the team sheet for his club, a slew of unimpressive performances from his midfielders at the last World Cup led to Rasmussen apparently consulting his scouting notes, shrugging, and saying 'yeah, why not?' Why not indeed. Quick, combative, and with a visionary eye for a pass, Gunnlaugsson could be one of the Multiverse's great deep lying playmakers if he continues to develop like this.

#9 - ST - Victor Larsen - Age 26 - Image Spartangrad (EUR) Image - 37 Caps, 8 Assists, 13 Goals
Huge, hulking, physically intimidating, and with a foot like a traction engine, Victor Larsen is notable for being - along with Yann-Erik Nilsson - the first black Polarian to ever be called up to the national team. Impressive with the Chicks at u-21s level, his pace and raw power can change the game in an instant, and he has been doing just that with Red Star in Divisjon One, having an outstanding season last time around with Spartangrad in Eura taking interest in him as a result. Described as a human battering ram, he provides something very different from the bench, and it will be interesting to see how Rasmussen uses him with the other strikers in the squad when it comes to deployment on the pitch. Works much better when he's starting as opposed to when he's coming on form the bench, so with Kolehmainen being rested this is a big opportunity for the man.

#10 - AMC - Alexis Zeljeznicar - Age 29 - Image East Franz Athletic Image - 71 Caps, 21 Assists, 14 Goals
After starting out for South Factory courtesy of their Polarian connections, Zeljeznicar was snapped up by the famous Ituraitz FC when South Factory were relegated. With the demise of Astograth's league he got lost a little in the national set-up, and when Dardan switched allegiance to the Terns it was Zeljeznicar who found himself out of a spot. One absolutely dynamite season for East Franz and Villeneuve's continuing injury problems later however, and he's right back in the number ten shirt. He is a former striker that has since retreated to a more supporting role; pacy, aggressive, a handful in the box for both sets of players, and wickedly talented. Despite having visibly calmed down recently, he appeared to struggle with the huge task of replacing van Sorensen in the number ten position, and Rasmussen made the decision to drop him to the bench. His confidence appears to be back in a big way following his move to the capital however, and he will now be aiming to repeat his form for his country.

#11 - ST - Torsten Wolff - Age 28 - Image FC1. Surtsey Island Gulls Image - 72 Caps, 8 Assists, 30 Goals
Having made a good impression with the u-21s, Wolff has had to wait patiently for his chance in the first team thanks to the strength of the Kolehmainen-Saarinen partnership, but since getting that chance he has appeared in nearly every game since. With new young strikers also in the frame to take the spot in the first team, you can be sure Wolff will be aiming to improve his goals/game ratio here on home soil after it slipped a little at the World Cup. With an easy-going nature, his partnership with Frederiksen at the DBC had a distinct air of the odd-couple about it, but it nonetheless worked quite well, and his keen eye for the top corner of the goal from wherever he is in the box has made his excellent poaching skills a fan favourite. Having pipped Frederiksen in squad decisions time after time, he'll be looking to cause some damage here in order to prove his selection justified. Turmoil in Iturributa means he's returned to Divisjon One with Surtsey, and yes; he's heard all the wolf jokes already.

#12 - GK - Alexis Sand - Age 31 - Image FC1. Bjarnarey Flotilla Image - 12 Caps
Just as he was making his breakthrough at Red Star, Alexis Sand was whisked away by former Severny hero and then-manager of Iturributa United Petter Bielsen to make his name on the Goose Coast. With Red Star raising Ulsletten to fill the gap, the implosion of that league saw Bjarnarey leap at the chance t sign a player with international and Champions' Cup experience. With a decent stretch and a firm punch, he'll do well when defending set pieces in the box, and his reflexes are second to none. There have been some concerns raised over his tendency to stay on his line when a sweeper-keeper approach might be more appropriate, but he is an experienced goalkeeper, and has earned this recall.

#12 - GK - Casper Rzatkowski - Age 27 - Image FC Axel Heiburg Image - Uncapped
Resting Kirilaunen and Korshanenko at the same time struck many as foolhardy and reckless team selection from Rasmussen, but when he has the likes of Sand and Rzatkowski to call up, why wouldn't he? FC Axel Heiburg have been going through something of a lean spell recently, true, but Rzatkowski has been at hand in the back sticks to make sure it hasn't been getting any worse. He's steadily eased Aapo Jelavic out of the Argonauts' starting elevens, and now this athletic and imposing goalkeeper is getting the chance to represent his country for the first time.

#14 - AMC - Luar Dardan - Age 25 - Image SK Franz Josef City Image - 11 Caps, 4 Assists, 3 Goals [- 59 Caps, 21 Assists, 20 Goals for Astograth prior to defection]
It takes a special player to change the rules on who can play for the Terns. Previous rules had stipulated that only players without caps for other nations, and who qualify for citizenship, can play in the hallowed Terns jersey. See, Torsten Navarro and Yann-Erik Nilsson. The WCC however, appear to have slightly laxer rules on this sort of thing. See, Alexio Del Nieran. Despite this, the FPIFA have resisted any calls so far to match any policy such that would put them more in line with the WCC. This despite the current Polarian stewardship of the WCC. Nonetheless, when it transpired that the now stateless Luar Dardan would no longer have the chance to play at any World Cup or Copa Rushmori since the demise of Astograth, and that he qualified for the Terns and Polarian citizenship through residence, Morten Rasmussen successfully campaigned to have the FPIFA relax their rules slightly. They now ignore previous caps for other nations should mitigating circumstances prevent that nation from competing. As a result, the Terns welcomed formerly Astograthian ace Luar Dardan into their squad. He had a very slow start that attracted a lot of negative press, but he finished like a runaway train and the stats speak for themselves. Given the form of Zeljeznicar, we're set for a battle for that starting spot, here.

#15 - DL - Niels Kruse - Age 25 - Image Revolutionaries (EUR) Image - 8 Caps, 1 Assist, 1 Goal
Niels Kruse has been busily beavering away in Eura for the best part of his career, and as the Terns scouts and Rasmussen finally started making the trips to Revolutionaries to see Salo play, Kruse coincided by having the best season of his career so far. Busy, hard-working, and with superb fitness levels, Kruse has made the most of doubts over Vaaraniemi's match readiness to take the spot in a squad that even Salo doesn't make, and by all accounts he is just itching to make his case to be KKV's long term replacement.

#16 - DR - Jeremiah Pipp - Age 26 - Image FC Endeavour (APX) Image - Uncapped
There never seems to be any shortage of talented full-backs for Rasmussen to choose from, and Pipp is no exception to that rule, clearly. Having moved abroad to Apox he has enjoyed the burgeoning reputation of his league, his club, and now himself. With a wicked right boot in dead ball situations, Pipp has much to offer the squad in the moments he gets on the pitch, and it could well be that we're seeing a straight shoot-out between him and Jansen for the long-term back-up position behind Bjerregaard. Assuming, that is, that the latter regains his form of a year ago, otherwise it's conceivable we could be seeing a lot more of this tough-tackling right-back.

#17 - DMC - Karsten Mannerheim - Age 28 - Image East Franz Athletic Image - 2 Caps
Undeniably talented and stupidly tall, Mannerheim has been working hard for East Franz all through their recent slump, and he has rightfully been collecting the plaudits for his role in their recent resurgence under Tuulari. He's worked hard for this bench spot and he gets it again on home soil, and whilst I'm sure there are youngsters in the DBC squad that Rasmussen will be more interested in long-term, Mannerheim nonetheless gets a well deserved call-up and chance to represent his country in the meantime.

#18 - ST - Ernest Akerhausen - Age 24 - Image Jan Mayen Islanders Image - Uncapped
Akerhausen has, along with his strike partner Gaspard Demaru, been carrying the weight of expectation of his club on his shoulders since before he was twenty. Jan Mayen's post-van Sorensen demise needed a hero to keep them going, and in the goals of Akerhausen and Demaru they had just that. With a clean shot and a ferocious work ethic, Akerhausen getting his chance for the Terns is probably slightly overdue - such is the competition for places at the moment. He's the kind of striker who is always likely to assist more than he scores, but he certainly offers something different for Rasmussen to think about, and the fans are excited to see what he can offer the Terns.

#19 - MC - Mateusz Wolff - Age 21 - Image FC1. Bjarnarey Flotilla Image - Uncapped
Making his debut in the squad is Mateusz Wolff, the younger half-brother of striker Torsten, marking the first time brothers have represented the Terns since Niko and Mathias Marek in the first ever squads. A talented attacking midfielder, it is thought that Rasmussen sees his long term role as a more battling and combative box-to-box player, and the presence of other attacking midfielders in this squad certainly hints at that. He has been one of a number of players who have been instrumental in Bjarnarey's recent good form, and this call-up appears to be nothing less than he deserves. Set pieces, assists, wicked passes and tricks and flair a-plenty, Wolff has long been described as breaking the mould of Valhallan football, and indeed to look at him on the pitch you'd never guess he was born here, grew up here, and has never played abroad. He's an avid follower of foreign leagues though, and is a fiercely talented guy. Hopefully big things can happen when he plays at the same time as his brother does up front. And yes, he's also heard all the wolf jokes.

#20 - ST - Rauno Bickermann - Age 21 - Image Red Star Severny Image - Uncapped
Kolehmainen isn't getting any younger, it has to be said, so it is of little surprise to see not one but two strikers handed their first opportunity with the Terns at this Copa. Rauno Bickermann's emergence in the Red Star starting eleven has coincided neatly with their run up the table, and this is no coincidence. Powerful, strong on the ball, tough to shake off and with a knack of finding the right channels to run into at the right time, Bickermann's touch-to-shot ratio is impressive to say the least. Scoring goals is the first, second, and last thing on his mind, but even so he finds the time to play the supportive target man if he's asked to, holding onto the ball and releasing a team-mate through on goal at just the right moment. An exciting talent just waiting to be moulded into a team player of the highest calibre.

#21 - MC - Robin Geirsson - Age 21 - Image Ramusok United (COS) Image - Uncapped
Highly thought of in the Federation, it was something of a surprise to many when he turned down offers from Divisjon One clubs to move to Cosumar, but Robin Geirsson is showing just why he wanted to move away to prove himself. Independent, headstrong, and always looking to do something impressive with the ball. Not just adequate, but spectacular. The most wonderful thing about this is of course how frequently he achieves it. Just as Rasmussen is planning with Wolff junior, Geirsson has already moved back into the centre of the park from a more attacking position he started out at Torshavn with, and his new found freedom to be more physically imposing is something he is apparently enjoying very much so far. A bundle of energy always looking to prove himself, the only problem is when he bites off more than he can chew.

#22 - DC - Torsten Navarro - Age 25 - Image FC1. Surtsey Island Gulls Image - 35 Caps, 1 Assist, 5 Goals
After graduating through the Haapa-Mechelin Youth Academy, East Külmsaari national Torsten Navarro instead elected to leave the club and was snapped up by Novaya Sibir Reds. Enjoying the increased game time he got by making such a move, he blossomed into the tough tackling defender we know today, and his stock only increased when the Reds were relegated and he was pursued by Surtsey. An integral part of their Divisjon One and Copa de Campeones winning side, he is now looked on enviously by Axel Heiburg fans, and as he makes his Terns appearances through the Polarian passport of his grandparents, he will have his determined eyes on getting back into the first XI. Capable of scoring freely in the opposition box from set pieces if allowed, which he proved on the way to winning the last Copa as Nordenberg's partner at the back. Onlny Kotkupshchikov's form prevents that partnership from being re-enacted here.

#23 - DC - Olaf Strauss - Age 21 - Image Red Star Severny Image - Uncapped
With a calm head and a mature reading of the game, it's not hard to see why Strauss has broken into the Red Star first team already. An absolute mountain of a man, even by Valhallan standards, he is incredibly tough to beat in the air, and few are the players who can find a way to outpace him and his ten-yard-strides. Or that's how they feel, anyway. A leader of men, he has a natural charisma and fearlessness that inspires others to play better around him, and many in the stands at Red star are already calling for him to be given the armband by the management there. He's got a big future ahead of him, that's for sure.

TACTICS: "The Pythagorean" 2-3-3-2
The Polarian game is methodical, abrasive, technical, and physical. They won't give you a second on the ball to think, and they won't hold back in the tackle. In the centre of the park they will play a possession based midfield game of triangles, though a defence splitting pass could come at any moment towards the fast and direct attack. Rasmussen plays a narrow and heavily modified diamond formation dubbed the Pythagorean by the sporting press. It is reliant upon two key triangular sets of players that transcend the normal "rows" of player in conventional formation layouts. Nordenberg, Otkupshchikov, and Holzhauser will act as the defensive triangle, and Zeljeznicar, Larsen, and Wolff will counter at the other end as the offensive triangle. Holzhauser and Zeljeznicar's roles in this scheme are absolutely crucial, as their job is to support and unlock the other two players in their respective triangles, providing outlets and creativity in abundance. Einarsson and Gunnlaugsson are part of a compact and creative midfield that will supply steel or style whenever the situation demands it, as well as partnering up with their respective full backs to form a kind of "bumper" that sweeps the flanks in attack or folds in to protect the penalty area in defence. Fitness of all players will therefore be key to the success of this plan; not just the constant positional changing demanded of Holzhauser and Zeljeznicar, but the athleticism of Jensen and Küngas-Vaga in particular will also be tested to the limit as their roles require frequent attacking. It's not quite a 4-3-3, it's not quite a 4-1-2-1-2, and it's not quite a W-M... Alright, alright, it's more or less a W-M with a focus on two specific trios of players. It's the Pythagorean.

The National Football Team

The Cosilhu Fotbal Naĝuu, or CFN if you're the type that avoids sketchy foreign spellings of the word "Football" and unhealthy-looking diacritics, has elected, against the voices of many in the footballing section of the nation, to send the same squad to the 19th Copa Rushmori as they did to the 18th, nearly down the the letter. They are looking to utilize their utterly mediocre 0-2-1 Copa Rushmori XVIII campaign as a springboard, propelling this very squad to hopeful glory in the next Copa, and using both the performance of the Copa squad and the players in the fourth Silver league season as gauges by which to decide on a squad for the upcoming Baptism of Fire tournament.
They are joined by Anneka Bau, their Polarian Liason officer. Hopefully Anneka will serve to help the team through their second foreign experience, and make it an enjoyable one.

The Squad

Coaches

Head Coach: Siolæsĉigu Marcu Foda Maria
Marcu Foda Maria, like all Isulans, is a gentleman and a scholar. He holds the title of Siolæsĉigu, translated as "scholar" or "academic", and utilizes extensive tactical strategy in his management of this squad. Unique amongst the remainder of the coaches and players, he has no club affiliation, instead utilizing his tactical mind for more noble and quiet pursuits, such as chess or poetry, two things which he is widely considered to be quite excellent at. This is his first tournament as a coach, as it is the first international tournament for any Isulan National side.

Assistant: Samuél Saidolaru Aĝuu (Maria CF)
Should somebody not know better, they would think Samuél was the manager. Dressed in a suit and tie, as a sharp contrast to Marcu's mandatory scholar's robes, and shouting out the orders which Marcu gives during each match, it is he who is perhaps the clearer face of the side. He is, however, very much the assistant to the Scholar, consulting the man for tactical advice. It is he who is the vehement, passionate loudspeaker for the cool and calm tactical mind that is the Scholar. Don't get the wrong idea, however. Samuél is not a shallow man. His managerial skills have led league powerhouses Maria CF to two conscutive titles, as well as a cup title.

Players

Starting XI

Keeper: Caĉiiu Ricadu Sinha (Maria CF)
Caĉiiu is widely regarded to be the best keeper in the nation. He is the man, along with Striker Elhu Micaila Saidosaquera and Manager Samuél Saidolaru Aĝuu, who has been credited with leading Maria CF to their top status as the single most successful team in Isula ĝe Ru. Caĉiiu, as per most Isulan tactics, is a fairly athletic keeper, always prepared to receive a pass from a teammate and even control the ball for some periods of time.

Left Back: Iacobu Ĉarlu Alassæra (Isula Are Esĉer)
Iacobu is a versatile, all-around defender who is always prepared to play forward when the team is attacking. Despite being slightly reluctant to go back to his position, he was chosen for the National Team thanks to his rough style, powerful running, and communication skills.

Center-Back: Dabiit Ducau Ĉiaba (Olympi)
Dabiit has already cemented himself as one of the premier defenders in the Isulan League. Content to stay back and contain the ball and the game, he is perhaps the most conservative of the Isulan back four. Expect to see him taking his time, calmly turning away advances and breaking up passing attempts.

Center-Back: Ioa Maria Rusu Lara (Olympi)
In an effort to presever chemistry, Ducau Ĉiaba and Rusu Lara were kept in their club team's position, where they provide the backbone for league powerhouses Olympi. Ioa Maria will move up a little further than Dabiit, and is prepared to push forward in an effort to provide linking passes or even score.

Right Back: Ioura Masu Eĝia (Arĝa CF)
The Arĝan defender is perhaps the oldest on the team, and arguably the most experienced. The veteran's age, however, has not diluted his style, which is agressive and vicious. Though he is the most likely to recieve cards or fouls, he is also the one who can effectively shut down the entirety of the Right side if he chooses, and that he will do so without being called is a gamble Marcu Foda Maria is all too willing to take.

Midfield: Bilha Saidomarcu Domique (Esĉelha Siripta Saiude)
Bilha's style and manner, both on and off the field, is usually only the second thing opposing players will notice, the first being the magnificent beard he keeps at all times. This bald-headed, bearded beast of a man is the team's main scorer, and an excellent chance at both power and finesse shots. He is the powerhouse of the team and usually the bane of Silver League keepers.

Midfield: Micaíl ĝ'O Isula Maria (Esĉelha Siripta Saiude)
Bilha's teammate Micaíl is the other half of a partnership which has worked wonders for Esĉelha Siripta Saiude throughout the league. Micaíl sits back, takes the ball and controls it well, then the team's main distributor unleashes one of his trademark square-balls in an effort to puncture the opposition's defenses. More often than not, this works wonders.

Left Wing: Ioa Maria ĝe Gaubilha (Club ĝ'Ocĉiu)
The Winger's job in the tactics laid out by Marcu Foda Maria is to control the ball down the flanks, receive distributing passes from the middle, and move the ball as far forward as they can, as efficiently as they can. These are instructions Ioa Maria follows to the letter. The player makes Isulan matches fun and engaging to watch, not the least because he is the second player on the starting XI names "Ioa Maria"

Forward: Elhu Micaila Saidosaquera (Maria CF)
There is no striker in the nation better than Elhu. The man is the foot behind most of Maria CF's triumphant goals, and has been instrumental in leading the team to back-to-back Silver League titles. He is now looking for further glory and opportunity on the International stage.

Forward: Ala Samuél Ĝea (Ĝa CF)
Samuél Ĝea is the face of a Ĝa CF team that desperately needs such a face. Athletic and nimble, he is the perfect complement to Elhu's quiet flamboyance, and the two, despite generally being opponents, have rapidly developed a bond that hopefully will lead to balls in the back of the net.

Right Wing: Mitu Maria Albu Saida (Isula Esiru)
The right is perhaps the weaker side on the Isulan team, and it is the young winger's job to secure the side. Though he is young, naive, and sometimes reckless, Mitu Maria is a player with promise, and one who is expected to lead the team.

Tactics

The Isulan game is a unique one, revolving mostly around ball control, and a massive amount of through-runs as the main manner of setting up scoring. In fact, the Isulan squad will generally prefer to dominate possession in the middle third of the pitch, forfeiting possible openings and shots in favor of waiting for the chance to spring forward, pass the ball in stride, and hammer it into the goal. The game, then, will revolve around quick, blazing strikes surrounded by periods of ball control and passing battles.
On defense, Isulans are never afraid to pass back to their keeper, a fact that can lead to trouble. The main role of the defense on an Isulan team is to send the ball back into the midfield battle, a battle that will always occur when playing against the Isulans.
Besides the lightning-quick through runs and one-twos which punctuate long periods of possession struggle, Isulans delight in corner kicks, seeing them as a grand opportunity to score, and generally capitalizing on this opportunity.
In this way, the Isulan game is both technical and fast, both demanding and exhilarating. While some teams may not see the amount of goals they are used to, that does not mean the game will be any less hard-fought and exciting.

Some characteristics of Isulan football:

Restricting play to a midfield battle
Punctual through runs and long balls in quick jabs at goal
1-on-1s with opposing keepers
Passing back to the goaltender, even at times when such a move seems impractical
Goals from corners
Sportsmanship and honor

Notes

Saintland has a very rough style of play and very few fouls in our national league, so don't hesitate to card Sanctii players, especially if Saintland loses. In the Sanctii version of the 4-2-1-3 formation, the outside backs also function as outside midfielders. Prince Andreas is the twin brother of Prince Josephus, the goalie and captain for the Saintland ice & field hockey team and younger brother of King Petrus XX, quarterback and captain for Saintland's gridiron team (and also the new King of Saintland). He is the team captain and also functions as the team's playmaker. Ioannes and Nicolaus Poenius are brothers, as are Silvester, Paulus and Josephus Flaccus, Stephanus and Philippus Vagionius, Petrus and Isaacus Barrius and Petrus and Marcus Jucundius. Andreas Inventius is the brother of Pius Inventius, Saintland's flagbearer at the VIII Winter Olympics. Inventius is a defensive-minded midfielder. Georgius Catiotus is married to Martha Catiotus (maiden name: Pudentilla), the figure skater from Saintland, who won the gold medal at the VIII Winter Olympics. Both Mr. and Mrs. Catiotus competed at the IX Winter Olympics, against the wishes of Prince Andreas, so Georgius Catiotus has been benched for World Cup 68. Stephanus Vagionius is not an especially fast player, but he is very tall and he is an exceptional finisher. Philippus Vagionius is faster than his brother and just as good at finishing. Herakles Karoki, an Acedonian national who was granted Sanctii citizenship prior to World Cup 66, is the star striker and an all-around dominant player. Karoki led the Saintland-Acedonia Unified Team to an Olympic gold medal at the Games of the VIII Olympiad, with a dominant performance and then led the Sanctii National Team to a successful World Cup 66 qualifying campaign. The Poenius brothers both have world-class speed. When Saintland attacks, typically Prince Andreas has possession of the ball and the Vagionius brothers, the center midfielders and the outside backs all try to get open inside the box, but 1 or 2 of them will usually be left back to defend (never Stephanus Vagionius), except when the situation calls for an aggressive attack. Prince Andreas takes free kicks, corners and throw-ins. Karoki will handle penalties. When I have started RPing a match report, I will update my factbook to reflect what happened in the match. I will likely be saving full match report RPs for special occasions from now on.

Saintland boycotted World Cup 67 qualifying, ostensibly over "corruption" in the WCC, but actually because they had no desire to go to either Cassadaigua or the Equestrian States. After Feministvs Sanctvsterra, impersonating this team, earned a Cup of Harmony berth, they decided to end their one-nation boycott and take the spot that had been earned on their behalf. They eventually reached the Round of 16 before being eliminated by Ko-oren.

After the ascension to the Throne of King Petrus XX, he reached out to Josephus Flaccus. Flaccus had defected Saintland following World Cup 65 qualifying and became a star in New Sideburn's domestic league. King Petrus XX worked out a deal for him to return to the Saintland National Team. This led to Saintland's most successful World Cup ever in the 68th edition, which concluded with a Round of 16 defeat to Polar Islandstates. That was followed up with a Round of 16 exit from their first Copa Rushmori, at the hands of Taeshan.

Saintland dominated in Qualifying for World Cup 69, but were stunned by Antoletia in the group stage, suffering an early exit. They come into the Copa Rushmori, this time around, as the 4th highest ranked Rushmori nation in the current KPB rankings, but tied for just 20th in the Rushmori regional rankings.

PRAVENNA
Preferred Formation:
5-3-2
Style Modifier: -1.25
Playstyle: Defensive, counter-attacking side, very much aware of their lack of any real technical ability. Very compact, generally aiming to punch through the middle even on the attack.
Kit Supplier: Cloaker
Nickname: The Lions

A Nepharim colony from back in the days of the city-states, but long since independent, Pravenna's struggles with matchfixing have had it banned from the WCC and UICA. Not, granted, that it would accomplish much in either. Their clubs, and most of their players, are semi-professional, which perhaps isn't surprising given that they live on a sun-blazed rock in the middle of nowhere, vaguely in Rushmori waters. Still, they hope to put themselves somewhat on the map here.

Pravenna itself is a dictatorship, but the current dictator, General Augustine Mitrosaridis, is rather more concerned with looking important and prestigious than actually oppressing his people. Relatively speaking, while the place is a corrupt tax haven plunging into ruinous debt, you can at least scrape a decent living there. That said, once Mitrosaridis was done naming the capital after himself and commissioning statues of his sexual conquests, his gaze has finally turned over to the football teams. Establishing a new PFA, Pravenna now aims to clean up its record and, eventually, gain international acceptance. This Copa Rushmori will be the first, and hopefully not the last, step on that journey.

All players are always looking to move up in the world, and most contract offers will be accepted. The local players chosen here in particular are very much playing in hopes of a paycheck.

Supplied by a somewhat reluctant Cloaker, of Nephara. Never has the phrase 'your money's good' been more dubious.

Staff
Manager: Constantine Katsaros
Asst. Manager: Ange Katsaros

The incorruptible Constantine Katsaros, a first-generation immigrant to Nephara with coaching experience as high as the First Division, takes charge of a fractured team - he's only selected players with a clean record of accusations of bribery and match-fixing ("Where there's smoke, there's fire," he maintains), and has instilled a sense of pride in the squad for the very first time. Many Nepharim first- or second-generation immigrants were chosen in the squad, more than one known personally by Katsaros. Feeling unable to trust most local managers, he's appointed his own older brother as assistant.

Goalkeepers
1 - Phaedon Andreou (vc) - Age 37 - West Colossi
12 - Evangelos Tsakiris - Age 22 - Creed United (NPH)
23 - Anastasia Stasinopolous - Age 26 - Istvanopolis Lions

Phaedon Andreous is a veteran goalkeeper, anything but versatile. A good shotstopper, weak coming out for crosses and unwilling to keep the ball at his feet. Tsakiris is more promising, but only an eventual successor - he's a backup, presently, for First Division Creed. Stasinopolous, in the way of many third goalkeepers, was chosen as much for her personality as for her ability - she came out of a fierce crackdown on match-fixing entirely spotless, and indeed was rumoured to have talked many others out of taking bribes.

Defenders
2 - RWB - Zoe Merochite - Age 28 - Rosbank Town (BRE)
3 - RCB - Niko Stavros - Age 30 - Augustinople Crowns
4 - SW - Augustine Rouphos - Age 22 - Hellas Minotaurs
5 - LCB - Eudoxia Tzavaras - Age 28 - Coret Hawks (NPH)
6 - LWB - Stern Katsalidis - Age 24 - South Rathia (BRE)
13 - SW - Hermione Vokos - Age 30 - Port Argos Phalanx
14 - LB - Theo Straton - Age 34 - Augustinople Saints
15 - CB - Demetrius Tsaldaris - Age 32 - Augustinople Saints
16 - CB - Medea Sgouros - Age 25 - Diamondqueen (NPH)
17 - RB - Athan Lekas - Age 29 - Augustinople Crowns

Merochite and Katsalis will be pivotal for the team in the wingback roles. Given that both players are backups in the Brenecian league, and neither has played in that specific position before (Katsalidis is a left or centreback by trade, Merochite a winger), it goes some way to showing the depth of the side. Rouphos is genuinely promising, an upstanding young player who tends to be slightly self-righteous. Tzavaras is a second-generation immigrant with little to no ties to Pravenna outside of blood - but she's arguably the squad's best defender, fast and harrying. Stavros is the weak point of the defence, slow, plodding, and locally-based. Sgouros was a late bolter into the team, another second-generation immigrant who was one of Conference East club Diamondqueen's best players on the road to promotion. Her Nepharim accent is as thick as any. Again, the fact that she's made the team shows the quality of the local leagues. Straton, Tsaldaris and Lekas are remarkable for having made the cut, since the Augustinople sides were largely regarded as the most corrupt of the bunch. Vokos is nowhere near the potential of Rouphos, but only a slight downgrade for the time being.

Midfielders
7 - RCM - Juliet Vatskalis - Age 27 - Westpike United (BRE)
8 - CM - Augustine Charisteas (c) - Age 34 - Ritter Town (NPH)
11 - LCM - Dorcas Merochite - Age 21 - Ritter Town (NPH)
18 - CM - Calisto Matraxis - Age 21 - Sheridan (NPH)
19 - CM - Andrea Leventis - Age 27 - Vermillion Spite (NPH)
20 - CM - Philippa Costas - Age 26 - West Colossi

Merochite and Charisteas both hail from Ritter, the former another second-generationer (as are Matraxis, Leventis and Vatskalis). Merochite is, in fact, Charisteas' niece, though she's unrelated to Zoe Merochite. Charisteas is a defensive anchor for club and country, with much of the pressure resting on his shoulders both on and off the pitch. Merochite is a fast player and decent advanced playmaker, with an alright shot on her as well. Vatskalis is a quietly competent box-to-box player. Matraxis is all pace without any real technique to speak of, but might be polished at a higher standard of play. Leventis is a poor man's Charisteas, from three divisions lower. Costas is the only midfielder besides the captain to have been born in Pravenna, and is a respectably clean passer of the ball with few other virtues. Probably the strongest area of the squad.

Forwards
9 - ST - Ange Taskasaplidis - Age 31 - Kensey Town (NPH)
10 - ST - Isadora Xenophon - Age 27 - Francisca Orient (BRE)
21 - ST - Konstantinos Orologas - Age 35 - Istvanopolis Lions
22 - ST - Alexander Mantzaris - Age 32 - Port Argos Phalanx

Taskasaplidis is a stout-hearted first-generation immigrant, a very tall, lanky target man who'll do everything he can to take the heat off his strike partner. Xenophon is a sharp, fast, deadly marksman by A-League standards, which is worth a lot more than being a deadly marksman by Argos Motors National League standards. Mantzaris is probably the best striker in that particular division, for what it's worth. It used to be Orologas, but age has rendered him practically immobile - he'll stand in for Taskasaplidis if absolutely necessary.

“Sogne, Longyearbyen, Franz Josef City, Brighthelmstone, and Spitsbergen. They can’t be serious?”

Sanders couldn’t contain his disbelief: 5 different teams in 5 different cities and stadiums on 2 different archipelagos on 5 different days. The others on the bus didn’t really care about the situation as they simply watched the passing scenery; this being the first time any of them had stepped foot in the nation. The team were riding on a local charter bus the ZFAF had rented for their time in the Polar Islandstates; Sanders, Golovkin, Dr. Wakahisa and interpreter Valbjorn Nylander in the front row with the rest of the team behind them. Minister of Sports Zimmel and his deputy minister De Luciano had decided to place the team in Sogne as three of their group matches were in the Franz Josef archipelago and the town was both cheap as well as near all three locations. They had also book a hotel in both Longyearbyen and Spitsbergen since they are on nearly opposite sides of the Svalbard archipelago. The hotel in Sogne was recommended by Mr. Nylander as a reputable and cheap little hotel.

“You know, I’ve lived in Sogne for over 30 years. I know the place like the back of my hand. I could tell you a bit about Sogne and myself,” Mr. Nylander said, trying to start up a conversation. “Really, now? I would like to hear a bit about yourself and Sogne,” replied Golovkin. Mr. Nylander perked up when he heard Golovkin’s interest in his story. “Well then, Mr. Dmitri, let us begin. I come from the small town of Osoyro, the only town on the most southern islands in the Franz Josef archipelago. I was a farm boy, raising sheep and cattle with my grandfather and parents. I did so until I was 19 years old, which is when I decided to move near the capital to get a better job and make a living for myself. Of course, I’ve sent money back to my family in Osoyro every month because I, unlike others, still care about those I left behind. Anyways, I became a worker at a local supermarket, which, after all these years, I can proudly say I now own and operate after being gifted the store by the previous owner, who has now retired. Now, onto Sogne. You see……”

By now, most of the bus had fallen asleep due partly to the long flight from Zenic to the Islandstates and to the long rambling storytelling of Mr. Nylander. Wondering about the strange interpreter, Sanders decided to take a look at the file he received on Mr. Nylander. He was a portly middle aged man, standing at around 180 cm and weighing in around 141 kg. He owned a small supermarket in Sogne that was profitable for its size, type and location. He’s been married to Lyssa Nylander (nee Jovetic), a veterinarian from Binar, Zenic since they were both 26 years old. He learned Latin from her and has actually been following the exploits of the Zenic national team alongside his wife. He volunteered for the position of interpreter and was hired almost immediately as he was the only qualified volunteer. The pair have a son, Bran Jovetic Nylander, who speaks three languages and works at both his father’s supermarket and the local library.

Sanders closed the file when he had read enough and quietly placed it into his briefcase trying not to wake up Dr. Wakahisa if possible. Looking over to his right, he caught the tail end of the conversation from earlier. “…and that’s why you don’t eat the fish brought from Jan Mayen in the Norscelt archipelago unless you have the right vaccinations. Don’t learn the hard way like I did, especially on your honeymoon.”

Sanders chuckled. Maybe it was the exhaustion that had consumed the players or maybe it was the quiet ride through the evening but Sanders felt he was able to relax a bit. He didn’t have to start making a game plan for Pravenna game until tomorrow, he thought as he rested his head on the seat and slowly nodded off to sleep.

Whatever needed to be done to win would be done. He knew his team could do it.

Frida Schmidt was not the sort of figure born to stand out in history. Or, indeed, in general. Short for a Polarian, plump by any standard, plain-featured and inclined to conservative dress, even people who saw her daily at work would like as not fail to pick her out of a lineup. Which wasn't to say that she lead a bad life - in fact, she rather enjoyed her work, took pleasure in small details, and was reasonably well-liked. But this assignment put her decidedly out of her element.
A born desk worker and bureaucrat, Frida may not have known much about Pravenna when she was first given the assignment (which she got chiefly due to speaking fluent Greek), but she'd done her research. Her depressing, depressing research. Pravenna was a corrupt tax haven lead by an absent-minded, easily-distracted megalomaniac, and their league (which was weak as a kitten) was barred from UICA due to an epidemic of intense match-fixing that had only recently been discovered.
A charming place. God only knew what the football team would be like, Frida wondered. Little enough was known about them.

She didn't know what she'd expected from the manager, Constantine Katsaros, but a cantankerous, chain-smoking Nepharim wasn't it. Who'd appointed his brother Ange as assistant, no less. He seemed affable enough when Frida had shown up at training, though - he ordered Ange to take over, and took her aside for a walk.
"So... Mr. Katsaros?"
Constantine grunted. "You can call me Con, if y'd prefer. Constantine works if you want to keep up the formal side of things. Want a smoke?"
"Ahh... no. Thank you. I gave up for my pregnancy, and, well, never picked up the habit again."
"Good. 'S a filthy habit." This didn't stop Constantine from rolling himself one - a thin, lank thing, but he seemed happy enough with it. "So. You've had... a vague look at the squad. What're your thoughts?"
Frida had been quietly watching them for a while from the side before striking up the courage to come down. "They seem... I don't know. They don't seem united. Sort of ... in their own little groups."
Constantine snorted. "Hah! 'S worse than that. Most of the local-based players don't speak English, or they speak it pretty badly. And those that grew up abroad? Pidgin Greek's the best they can manage, at best. I'd barely spoken it in twenty years before picking up the job... had to brush up before I did. I'll have to get two different team talks in. Different languages! For a bloody national team! 'S insane."
"So... it was kind of a gamble to take so many immigrants?"
"Had to take it. The local clubs are shit, and most of them are corrupt. Had t' take those I knew how to trust. Anyway... there's some decent players there, if you stretch your definition of 'decent' far enough."
"Really?" Frida perked up. "Do you think you could do well this tournament?"
Constantine laughed, short and sharp. "I wouldn't go that far. But we can stretch a few goals out of Isadora. She's a competent striker, goal-every-three-games sort of deal in the Brenecian leagues. ... I can't believe I'm saying that like it's a good thing, but there it is. We have a regular Premiership starter, though, which is nice."
"Oh?"
"Plays for a relegation-threatened team and is thirty-four, but hey. We have his niece, too. Expecting good chemistry there. A geriatric local and a reserve for a second-tier Nepharim side will be battling it out to start between the sticks. So I'd say expectations are pretty bloody low."
"Oh."
Constantine clapped Frida on the back. "Hey. It's fine. You'll be able to get back to your real job all the sooner!"

Katsaros' plan was simple, as Frida discovered - she'd been allowed to sit in on his planning sessions. Zenic were a team with many similarities to Nephara kind of team - aggressive, 4-4-2 diamond with the central midfielders given a lot of freedom of expression to maneuvre onto the wings. Their squad was largely comprised of locally-based veterans, and to extend the metaphor further still, they were also Baptism winners. That said, there were weaknesses, and their best striker, Wessel, a man who could net one in three in Apox... scouts suggested that he was out of favour for the national side. "That's the best news I've heard since taking the job," grunted Constantine upon hearing it. "Maybe we can scrape a point."
The plan was not subtle. They'd line up in a 5-3-2 with their best lineup, as this was plausibly their best chance of an upset. Park the bus at their end, hoof the ball up to the strikers when in possession, trying to make use of Taskasaplidis' strength and experience, and Xenophon's pace and ability to actually put the ball in the net. "Thing is," Constantine told Frida - he seemed to like bouncing ideas off quiet people, "for all their money and prestige, one player's really as strong as another no matter how much they're paid. And Zenic aren't really a fantastic side, but they'd still rip us apart if it came to a battle of technique. So we can do this. Just need a bit of grit... and a bit of luck."

MANAGERIAL STAFF
Manager: Gwyn Juniper
Perhaps the 2nd greatest player in Taeshani history, Juniper has finally been handed the reigns of the national team job. Gwyn's first world cup qualification attempt fell just short of leading the nation back to the world cup, 1 goal short in fact. Now for a second time Gwyn leads his team into the Copa Rushmori with a B squad mostly intact from the previous one, with lots of talented, experienced players in the team.

Assistant Manager: Elijah Knickerbocker
As many expected Juniper has brought up long time friend and teammate Elijah Knickerbocker to be his assistant. Knickerbocker has been the U21 coach for a few seasons and now moves up to help out on the full level. He was captain of the National team in the years before Juniper and is a strong leader and will help keep the Knights in line.

GOALKEEPERS

1 - Nick Garden - Real Atlantea 6 Caps, 27 Years Old
The new B team starter proved rather serviceable in the last Copa Rushmori. In his six stars he managed to keep the other team off the board for the most part. This tournament will likely be his proving tournament, with Joe Jackson nearing the end of his career it is time for Garden to make his point for being the next starter.

23 - Jim Horton - Yaton FC 0 Caps, 29 Years Old
The backup will be Yaton's Jim Horton who although very skilled is not likely to see much action and is really just a stop-gap.

24 - Myung Wook Yu- Bayern-Algaer 1 Cap, 24 Years Old
Third string keeper.

DEFENDERS

2 - LB, Dusty Latrine- Blacklake Blues 15 Caps, 30 Years Old
Dusty Latrine is likely to be the full starter come the qualifying campaign with longtime left back Jeremiah Longwaters officially retiring from international play. He will mark a different player than Longwaters with less forward movement and more of a basic defensive ability adding little to the attack.

3 - CB, Flynn Parker - Fadron Flight 31 Caps, 1 Goals, 29 Years Old
Flynn Parker proved rather good in the qualifying campaign and this tournament will be a chance for him and center back mate Jhett Jackal to continue to gel and hopefully push the Purple Knights chances of qualifying for the next world cup.

4 - CB, Jhett Jackal - Real Atlantea 24 Caps, 1 Caps, 29 Years Old
Jhett Jackal rather surprisingly became a starter last qualifiers and now looks to build that center back ability along side his teammate Flynn Parker. That said Jackal is more of a full back and his abilities defending the cross are rather suspect.

5 - RB, Alain Von Bois - Yaton FC 8 Caps, 1 Goal, 27 Years Old
Von Bois will once again be in the back for at the Right Back position. However this is a bit of a misnomer as he is a wingback and not a fullback. He will hardly add much to the team in the defense and many see this as the reasoning behind Latrine being named the starting left back.

17 - Tevia Iacoco - Yaton FC 0 Caps, 26 Years Old
On the bench will be two newcomers in Iacoco and Fontaine. Iacoco is the big hulking center back who seems to just be at the wrong age. He will likely only get a few run outs and only in high defensive games.

19 - Pantilimon Fontaine - Bayern Phoenix 0 Caps, 28 years Old
Fontaine is also sadly getting up there in age as his first tournament comes up.

21 - Gabriel Gorzon - Tintown Terrapins 16 Cap, 29 Years Old
Gorzon seems to be the most likely starter going into the qualifiers, even with Von Bois starting for the B team. He adds more defensively to the squad, whilst also adding a bit of an attack. Look for him to see a lot of minutes late in games.

MIDFIELDERS

6 - CM, Karl Llana - Bayern-Algaer 46 Caps, 30 Years OldVice-Captain
Only a few months ago Llana announced his international retirement, but rather quickly he has come out of it for one last hurrah at the Copa Rushmori. The coach needed a center midfielder and hes got one.

7 - RM, Grant Fauejeau - Fadron Flight 62 Caps, 28 Years OldCAPTAIN
With Tyler Pantoum staying away from this Copa Rushmori Fauejeau is not only the captain of the team, but the highest capped member of the team. He will be their leader, and hopefully he leads very well.

8 - CM, Lysander Ying Uing - Bayern Phoenix 31 Caps, 2 Goals, 24 Years Old
While he is most certainly not the goal scoring threat his father was, Lysander Ying Uing has proven an asset to the Purple Knights in recent years and now gets his first chance to start for the national team. Hopefully he does well.

9 - LM, Alex Guggenheim -Red Star Severny (Polar Islandstates) 1 Caps, 1 Goal, 25 Years Old
Guggenheim rather shockingly made it straight out of nowhere and onto the A national team in the last qualifiers. Now he's pulling his weight as a starter for the B team and in the country he plies his club football for. Hopefully that is an advantage for the team.

10 CAM, Brett Toulanlan - Canalave Dragons (Valladares) 6 Caps, 3 Goals, 25 Years Old
At the tip of the Taeshani midfield will be speedy Brett Toulanlan who will look to open up defenses and spring the forwards in attack.

15 - Billy York - 1093 Club de Atlantea 24 Years Old
A new player for the future in Billy York, a former U21 star.

16 - A.J. Bouveiau - Fadron Flight 17 Caps, 2 Goals, 29 Years Old
Bouveiau is now the spark of the bench with a lot of talent.

18 - Isaac Benoit - Real Atlantea 23 Years Old
Benoit is a bright young player for Taeshani champions Real Atlantea.

20 - Parry Perry - Moresville FC 1 Cap, 28 Years Old

22 - Addison Lambrogini - Real Atlantea, 2 Caps, 27 Years Old
Lambrogini represents speed on the bench.

STRIKERS

11 - RS, Xander McDrew - Bayern Phoenix 13 Caps, 2 Goals, 23 Years Old
The world seems to be Xander McDrew's oyster. After one year on the bench he has been handed the keys to the B team's offense and the recently homeward bound McDrew seems likely to relish the chance.

13 - Javier Yon - Ojian Orangemen, 23 Years Old
Once a teammate of McDrew Yon joins him again on the national team.

14 - Peter Wiggin - Blacklake Blues 0 Caps, 20 Years Old
The younger brother of Ender Wiggin. Need i say more.

On Species and Equestrian Hoofball
The Equestrian States is a nation of incredible diversity. When many countries make this kind of statement, they are referring only to racial matters dealing with differences in skin color or culture. But the Equestrian States takes diversity to a whole new level, with dozens of sapient species living alongside each other in harmony. From pegasai to griffons, and humans to dragons, the Equestrian States is among the most diverse nations known to exist. But diversity has also had a unique and intriguing impact on the playing of sports in the Equestrian States, and hoofball is no exception. In the following paragraphs, the natural strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies of each prominent species in the Equestrian States will be explored, offering those unfamiliar with the Equestrian States a chance to explore the wonderful diversity that makes the Equestrian States a great country and gives our beloved national hoofball team a versatility that few others can hope to match.

NATIONELL FOTBOLL ROSTERIIN AV VJAALSBÜRG
Vjaalsbürg National Football Roster

National History

Vjaalsbürg is part of three main nation-states eight hundred kilometers to the north of Super-Llamaland, the other two being Hakifao and Arøndell. Together, the three as well as numerous island states to the south form the Arendellenske Union, which has finally stabilized the region about thirty years since the isles' Llamanean occupation ended. However, Vjaalsbürg, with the impeachment of pro-sovereignty Prime Minister Erik Pederssen, is teetering on the brink of elimination via annexation into the union.

Team History

In 1992, the Fotboll Liga Av Vjaalsbürg (FLAV) was founded for the nation's star players. It quickly grew to three divisions of ten teams each, becoming a valuable source of revenue for the nation's economy. FLAV was bought out by the Vjaal government in a $1.5 billion dollar deal in 2005, and the government quickly founded the Förening Av Vjaal Fotboll (FAVF), complete with national team. Herlek Magnussen, a former FLAV star, was appointed as manager, and the team made their first appearance at the 2007 Reunion Cup, bowing out in the first round to Miklandia. The team won their first game, 2-1, in May 2008, over that of Hakifao, and has made two Reunion Cup finals since then, only to lose to Hicaña both times. Seeking a bigger stage, new manager Anders Walquist entered the team into the Copa Rushmori, and the nation is prepared for the biggest tournament in Vjaalsbürg history.

EXCITEMENT BUILDING IN FEDERATION
Sutherland is alive with excitement tonight ahead of the opening match of Copa Rushmori XIX - Polar Islandstates vs Dixhuitiles - which kicks off in a little under twenty-four hours from now. The small stadium of The Forge, situated towards the centre of this famous steelworking town, has never been involved in any event quite so prestigious as this, and tickets sold out in record time. The Terns are reigning champions of the Copa, let's not forget, and anticipation and expectations are high that the experimental squad put together by Rasmussen will excel on home soil.

OOC:
That was your 24 hr warning, as promised in the bid post.

STAFF
Manager: Henrik Oswald, 53
Oswald the current manager of the Mapletish under 21 national football team and a former national team player. Nominated as one of the most talented young defenders of his generation and spanned his playing career with Young Lions, Catanzaro, Super Reds and most notably Aylsebury his boyhood club in which he played over two stints where he regularly captained the team and became the club's most capped international, turning out 43 times for Mapletish in his career. After retirement he went into coaching, specialising in coaching young players. He eventually took on the role as the manager of the under 21 team after a rather successful managerial spell with Alysebury in Liga Four, and bringing them in the top four for four successive seasons and on two occasions the promotion playoffs. Always seem to have the right tools to gel the young players together, Oswald's challenge would be to lead the Under 21 team to gain experience in an international tournament and to deepen the understanding of the team among the players.

Assistant Manager: João Antônio, 48
Antônio the current assistant manager of the Mapletish under 21 national football team and a former player. He played for Torquay United in his injury stricken career with a life threatening skull fracture that warrant his pre mature retirement from football. He was no doubt one of the few talented players that was plagued by injuries and never fully tapped his potential. However he impressed in his short 102 games playing career, putting in 68 assists and 47 goals. After retirement Antônio went into coaching and became a first team coach for Torquay United while managing the reserve team. After Torquay United, he went into specialising in youth development and has been a partner of Oswald ever since.

"He does like to think he's a magnificent badass, doesn't he?"

The plane had just touched down in Franz Josef, and already Samuél Saidolaru Aĝuu had begun to put on the bombastic air he always did when abroad. The team assistant manager was, and liked to think of himself as, the face of the managerial staff of Isulan football, and now he was acting it. No sooner had the plane rolled to a stop and the doors opened did Samuél walk briskly down the steps and stride purposefully across the tarmac, leaving the team to trot along behind him in a ragged triangle formation that looked more forced than intimidating.

The suits they wore were smart, one had to admit. Gray material stitched on the breast with the National Arms coupled with crisp white cotton shirts and sleek thin black ties emblazoned with the National Arms served to make the National Team look quite the gentlemen, had they not spent their first few moments in Polar Islandstates half-jogging across the asphalt.

The day was overcast, cloudy, and biting cold, which really was not a suprise to the Isulan team. Yet Samuél trotted on, seeking the haven and light of the airport complex. Despite the abject lack of sun, his eyes were hidden behind silver-tinted aviator sunglasses, which coupled with the vaguely disheveled suit and team behind him made him look less like a briskly-moving-man-with-a-plan and more like a harried father. He made his was brusquely through the doors of the airport, where the team was greeted with a fairly substantial throng of Polarian and foreign reporters and media. It wasn't what other, better known teams were being hailed with, that was for certain, but it was nice to see, at least to some of those who were shaking off the Valhallan chill.

If Samuél had enjoyed their reception, he made no note of it. Whether the straightforward bulling through the small crowd of reporters was part of this...air he'd put on, or his honest reaction to foreigners shouting strange-sounding sentences at him, or a product of his gross misunderstanding of any language that was not Isulan, one could really pick any of the three. Each of them was quite likely, though, in truth, perhaps Samuél should have been afforded the most logical of conclusions. It had been a long, weary trip, and if anything Samuél's treatment of the Polarian interns was nothing more than a product of a plane ride and the stress of a team to manage.

A team that was now having quite the giggle at poor Samuél's expense.
"Yes, quite the badass he is" muttered Keeper Caĉiiu Ricadu Sinha, who had the utmost privilege of being managed by Samuél back home. "Quite the badass indeed"

The team clambered out of the sleek revolving doors of the airport onto the sleek black bus that would take them to the hotel where they would be staying, resting, and preparing for their Thursday tie with Pasarga. As he made to board the bus, however, Samuél was tapped on the shoulder by an elderly Valhallan woman, short in stature and with slashes of white through her silver hair. Ever one to disrespect a foreigner, Samuél, continuing to make it quite easy for the casual observer to describe him with one adjective, brusquely moved past her, even venturing to make an aside, muttering "fuduséa" into the ear of Siolæsĉigu Marcu Foda Maria, the robed figure who, up until now, had been quiet. It was the sort of aside that is better left untranslated.

Marcu merely grinned, having, unlike Samuél, read every official communique the duo had been sent, and knew exactly who this woman with the streaked hair was.

Her head snapped round at the word, and for a moment toyed with the idea of cursing Samuél back. Instead, she glared him straight in the eye and said, in perfect Isulan, "I speak Isulan, Samuél Saidolaru Aĝuu. Welcome to Polar Islandstates." The thick Valhallan accent lent icy steel to her words, and for half a second her eyes were as hard as the land they were in, and Samuél seemed almost cowed. Then the bright blue, piercing eyes turned kindly, and moved to Marcu.

"You must be Marcu Foda Maria, who I've spoken with before. A pleasure to meet you"

"And it is a pleasure to finally lay eyes upon you, Anneka Bau. Please, step inside"

The elderly Valhallan boarded on the heels of the National Football team, stopping to give Samuél a beaming smile, to which he muttered again, thankfully inaudibly. She settled into the frontmost seat as the bus slid into motion. Tapping Marcu, whom she had decided she liked better between the two coaches, on the shoulder, she mentioned that she supposed she should probably introduce herself to the team. The sentiment was shared, and so she seized the bus' radio and spoke.

"Hello and welcome to the Federation of Polar Islandstates! My name is Anneka Bau, and I am here as your liaison officer. If you or your entourage have any questions about anything besides football while you're here in the Federation, please let me be the one you go to. I mean, you can go to Samuél, but I doubt he knows more about Polar Islandstates than I do. I am your tour guide, interpreter, and the only one on this bus with the necessary language skills to buy alcohol here, so don't piss me off. I do indeed speak Isulan, as you can probably tell, quite fluently. I've always been fascinated with your nation, ever since a family vacation, and I have studied your language for quite a while. I hope during this time you can teach me about your country as well.
Please, call me Anneka, or Anheca if that's too hard to pronounce. I'll go by either. I'll let you get your rest now, but please introduce yourself to me. I'm always willing to talk, explain, and listen.
Oh, and beat Pasarga, yes?"
