CMSC XXXV: Apertura Review

Matchday One… The collective sniffles of a confused and angry nation could not detract from the long-awaited opening of XXXV, with the reigning champions handed the Saturday morning starter as per tradition.

And what a stunner it proved to be, with Green Island hosting a nine-goal thriller with the (almost) all-new Marbles. We’d coo about it for several paragraphs, but that’s not how we’re doing things this Apertura, goshdarnit, so let’s just say simply that the visitors went in front, and the GIZ turned it around to three-one, and the Marbles equalised, and the champions went back in front, and the Marbles equalised again, and Jhanna Young scored the winner with eight minutes remaining.

Late? Yes. Somewhat tedious and repetitive? Hell yes. But the CMSC’s hold on its nine key foreign markets won’t have been harmed by this utterly wonderful opening fixture. Nothing in the remaining sixteen weekends of the Apertura is going to top the GIZ’s five-four victory. We might as well not even bother.

Such that it matters though; other news saw a big clash between Albrecht FC and MarquezOW – and proof positive provided that, with Jesse Nakatsuru’s career going from strength to strength, Luis Enrique Torrealba’s side are still genuine contenders for domestic honours, with the two-nil scoreline over the bookies’ favourites for the league title thoroughly deserved. The top-flight newcomers’ starts were thoroughly mixed, meanwhile, while Albrecht Independent FC are probably down already, if their laughable five-nil crushing at the hands of… Port of Clotaire!? Eh?

Elsewhere, Agostinho’s career in Candelariasian football got off to an interesting start – the Cafundelense youngster setting up Cas Richardson for Caires City’s opener in the three-one win over Mayo Valley, before earning himself two yellow cards in the second period and becoming the first player to be sent off this season – with the Indies’ Alex Roberts joining him in the bathroom of sin with a straight red over in the capital a few minutes later.

Albrecht Independent FC 0-5 Port of Clotaire (Cooper 9, O’Airmeadhaigh 37, Ham 40, Bachuijs 50, Sánchez García 64)
Albrecht FC 2-0 Marquez-Onwere (Nakatsuru 36, Morrison 71)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-2 Gamboa FC (Castro 88; Zanirato 21, Jorge Roberto 85)
Caires City 3-1 Mayo Valley (Richardson 52, Johansson og 59, González 71; Witt 87)
KT Hotspur 1-2 Albrecht Turkish (Dariegan 38; Innisvale 29, Bakker 72)
Green Island 5-4 El din Marbles (Durosa 21, Kures 29, va Drake 32 and 58, Young 82; Herráez 14, Ricky 33 and 54, Rodríguez 71)
Melin & Nader 0-1 Caires Sports (Valinial 82)
Radyukevich CSC 0-0 NAPPC
Tenderville United 1-1 AFC MN Smith (Martinez 10; Meyer 38)

Matchday Two… A meeting between last term’s top two (it’s a bloody good job we haven’t got time to waste this Apertura, else we’d have a nice long rant at those fixture-list-makey people) ended up telling us very little – save that Green Island still gave a highly impressive niche in coming back from behind late on and, that without Daniel Dos Santos, MarquezOW have a bit of a glass jaw.

Two-two, and that allowed the capital city giants to push out up top, with the Scorpions crushing Gamboa and Turkish still not convincing anyone but squeaking through their traditionally tricky meeting with MN Smith. Having Pablo Estévez stretchered off in agony was a bit of a blow, though, with Eren Arica expected to be hauled from his comfortable existence in the reserves-slash-Magnus-United to take up the mantel.

NAPPC are starting nicely, meanwhile, the bastards. While the promoted sides beginning with M aren’t. Poo.

AFC MN Smith 1-2 Albrecht Turkish (Harrison 63; Yeoman 37, Bakker 56)
Albrecht Independent FC 0-1 Tenderville United (Deleks 48)
Caires Sports 0-2 Arrigo Portuguese (Nicholls 15, Macanás 48)
El din Marbles 1-2 Caires City (Rodríguez 3; Rosenthal 76, Marshall 90+2)
Gamboa FC 0-4 Albrecht FC (Zec 3, Kim M. 44, Nakatsuru 49, Wanderley 86)
Marquez-Onwere 2-2 Green Island (Souto Maior 7 and 23; Anwamanë 45+2 and 78)
Mayo Valley 0-2 KT Hotspur (Dariegan 48, Nilsson 82)
NAPPC 2-1 Port of Clotaire (Scholey 24, Cuesta 44; Sánchez García 88)
Radyukevich CSC 3-1 Melin & Nader (Davis 11, Adekunde 14, Paganel 53; D’Ancona 32)

Matchday Three… A somewhat forgettable third weekend, without much in the way of incident or two many goals. It did however serve as a reminder were it needed that poor old Fabio Mannasuch has simply lost the plot. Sure, he takes the team in training and knows the qualities of his squad better than we, but his preferences in the way of players simply doesn’t stand up to any prodding. His presence is all part of some strange Vanorian plot, if you ask me, and the Solidarity faithful better hope that Julius Rotherwell can ‘do a Shaan’ at Turkish and start to take charge now that he’s in the dugout as well.

Okay, granted, they won seven-nil. But it was only against the Indies, in the Hoxton derby. That doesn’t count.

So, we couldn’t resist doing a bit of research. We might be wrong, but we’re pretty sure that’s the biggest margin of victory of the international era – i.e, since XXIV, or earlier. There’s been a few six-nils over the last few years – Albrecht FC have managed it twice, against MN Smith and the PoC, while Green Island handed out the same to McDonald SC not so long ago. Candelaria Arsenal beat Gamboa seven-one on the opening day of XXIX, while KT Hotspur managed a seven-one away win at Candelaria-Allemali during XXV (on a Saturday morning, if you really wanted to know), but otherwise the only seven-nil of the last couple of decades we can find is Green Island’s victory at Caires Sports in the XXVI CMS Cup last thirty-two. A replay, remarkably, following a one-all draw in Zapata.

To put it simply… this doesn’t happen very often. Even Ausilio Calabrese scored, for heaven’s sake. It rather goes without saying that Turkish supporters are cock-a-hoop, but ultimately it says rather more about Albrecht Independent FC and Katie Cincoski – for without her, they might as well give up now. Only one other side are yet to pick up a point (the Marbles, incredibly enough… maybe we were right to forget their preview…), and that -13 goal difference doesn’t look too healthy, now does it?

All that nonsense in the Albrecht ‘burbs helped overshadow the Scorpions’ first defeat of the season – and what a defeat it was, going one-up in Arrigo before being utterly crushed by a combination of local passion (they do so love beating the Scorpions in these parts) and the unleashed talents of Harry Oughton, the Kura-Pellandi, and Koviljko Randjelovic, the… Candelariasian. Vaguely. We’ll have him, though. My gosh, he’s good.

But lo, for there was more! MarquezOW are fourteenth in the table after giving away an early two-goal lead in Rider Castle, with Caires City youngster Leo Williams scoring in injury time to hand the Errant Knights the point that leaves them in second position. The champs also suffered defeat, meanwhile, with Gamboa meeting fire with fire and coming away with a hard-fought victory – thanks largely to Raheem Kay, the goalkeeper who’s certainly made the C&M squad for a reason. Corlan T’saal received his marching orders in Caires Sports’ draw at the Jukos, while the big Nethertopian derby (ha, you get mentioned last… HA!) saw Tenderville ease to the three points. Drunn Deleks is the season’s top scorer now, for what it’s worth.

My God, this year is boring.

Albrecht Turkish 7-0 Albrecht Independent FC (Cohen 7 and 42 and 89, Werner 45, Innisvale 57, Yeoman 62, Calabrese 87)
Arrigo Portuguese 4-1 Albrecht FC (Randjelovic 10 and 56, Oughton 15 and 34; Foster 6)
Caires City 2-2 Marquez-Onwere (Richardson 24, Williams 90; Sáez 5, Oliveira Tavares 6)
Green Island 0-1 Gamboa FC (Jorge Roberto 11)
KT Hotspur 1-0 El din Marbles (Dariegan 60)
Mayo Valley 1-0 AFC MN Smith (Szatmári 45+1)
Melin & Nader 0-0 Port of Clotaire
Radyukevich CSC 1-1 Caires Sports (Paganel 21; Made’er 67)
Tenderville United 2-0 NAPPC (Deleks 35 and 39)

Matchday Four… Ick, okay. That probably wasn’t supposed to happen. The facts are, however, that NAPPC have just contrived to beat Albrecht Turkish. You remember them? The ones that one seven-nil last weekend? Yeah. Curious, no?

Quite how that ragtag bunch of Nethertopians, Sargossans and an ancient Vephrese bloke are up in sixth is anyone’s guess, but is does make Victor Wildeman a bit of a hot property, given that he’s lost three league games in the last twenty-three, and on this evidence they’re not going to have the remotest worries about yo-yoing back downwards again. Why, God? Why do you mock us so? WHY!?

In other news, Albrecht FC’s similarly disparate bunch of braves bounced back themselves from last weekend’s disappointment with a thoroughly convincing victory at the KOD. The Yaforite national team would’ve expected better from this match, and indeed this season as a whole, but it’s started pretty damn flatly and they were pulled apart by Jesse Nakatsuru – one of that really rather titchy group of young Candelariasians with every hope of hitting ‘World Class’ status (whatever that is) sometime soon. Elsewhere, the big guns generally got what they wanted to leave the top five with a fairly familiar look – though MarquezOW have a way to catch up, and the leaders, somewhat surprisingly, are Caires City. That’s one in the eye for the Davies faithful and a very early feather in Dionísio’s nascent managerial cap.

The other big clash saw a really very fine Clotaire derby. These matches have become increasingly hard-fought and generally worth watching in recent years, with both clubs largely admitting defeat even in the race for Globe Cup positions, and a bad defeat might well have seen the long-awaited end of Muscat. As it was, a pulsating three-all draw helped no-one’s hopes of anything more than mid-table respectability.

Oh, and the Indies lost. Only one-nil this time, but they did have right-back Reuben Ward stretchered off and ruled out for most of the rest of the Apertura, so… swings and roundabouts, eh?

Albrecht Independent FC 0-1 Mayo Valley (Szatmári 70)
Caires Sports 0-3 Albrecht FC (Wanderley 8, Nakatsuru 40 and 67)
El din Marbles 0-0 AFC MN Smith
Gamboa FC 1-2 Caires City (Nixon 16; González 1, Agostinho 24)
Green Island 4-1 Arrigo Portuguese (Tinúviel 15, Young 49, Anwamanë 63 and 85; Macanás 84)
Marquez-Onwere 2-0 KT Hotspur (Cotuba 55 and 82)
Melin & Nader 0-1 Tenderville United (Deleks 49)
NAPPC 1-0 Albrecht Turkish (González Rodríguez 58)
Port of Clotaire 3-3 Radyukevich CSC (O’Airmeadhaigh 15, Ham 55, Maxwell og 82; Adekunde 19, Paganel 50 and 89)

Matchday Five… Oh, would you come off it? Turkish lose twice in a row? After the seven-nil? Seriously?!

This weekend’s conquerors were Melin & Nader, in los italianos’ first victory of the bloody season. It was all largely thanks to Nicola D’Ancona, the former Albrecht FC winger, who swung in two gorgeous crosses for Cristian Enría and the Pocoan Ricardo Luiz Solaris to finish – though Kjarik Tashkir must take his share of the blame after making a complete hash of both clearances.

Remarkably, M&N achieved their two-one victory without holding midfielder Mark Allbright – instead partnering Enría with Edward Jones. It proved a bit of a masterstroke for Ferraro, with the pair utterly dominating the midfield and leaving Turkish’s own three men in the centre entirely overpowered. Calabrese was eventually withdrawn in favour of Darren Robinson, but the more familiar-looking 4-4-2 could muster up only one John Yeoman strike in return.

They still sit in the top four, ahead of Mayo Valley on goal difference, and were helped both by Radyukevich – who held Tenderville to leave both sides still undefeated – and the same one-all scoreline popping up in Songstress. With the CMSC apparently intent on getting all the big matches out of the way nice and early, this weekend brought us Albrecht FC against Green Island – a bit of a damp squib, as it turned out; with the Scorpions struggling to contain the various pointies in the first period but still winning the half, and a more circumspect GIZ of the second forty-five eventually earning an equaliser through Michel Mulder. The Nethertopian international has been crying out for a start of late and, with the left-footer adding some much-needed aggression to this team, he may well have done enough this weekend to inch his way past Jason Saunderson and leave Durosa shifting across to the opposite flank.

Caires City, with a big finger up at Davies, now ride alone up top after two late goals handed them the points in Arrigo, while disappointing starts for MarquezOW and the Spur continued. And, most importantly, the Indies scored a goal. It came in the second minutes of second-half stoppage time, granted, when the Marbles were already home and dry, but still…

AFC MN Smith 1-1 Marquez-Onwere (Timpson 28; Oliveira Tavares 61)
Albrecht FC 1-1 Green Island (Morrison 33; Mulder 71)
Albrecht Independent FC 1-2 El din Marbles (Dennin 90+2; Hawker 45+2, Ricky 60)
Arrigo Portuguese 0-2 Caires City (González 80, Williams 86)
Caires Sports 2-1 Port of Clotaire (Sinjinir 46, Belmore 71; Ham 19)
KT Hotspur 1-2 Gamboa FC (Dariegan 77; Jorge Roberto 1, Nixon 90+2)
Melin & Nader 2-1 Albrecht Turkish (Enría 32, Solaris 56; Yeoman 70)
NAPPC 1-2 Mayo Valley (González Rodríguez 44; Witt 5, Milošević 75)
Radyukevich CSC 1-1 Tenderville United (Clayton 70; Night 8. No sunglasses plz, kthnx)

Matchday Six… Arright, fine. It’s official. Caires City are good again.

However one feels about the way Davies was disposed of, and the managerial prospects of Dionísio in the long term, the Cafundéu-born former C&M international (as if you didn’t know) really is getting it right thus far. This weekend, with Colin Marshall ruled out in the warm-up with his persistent knee problems and replaced by teenager Sascha Connah, it seemed that the Errant Knights were in no fit state to take on Albrecht FC. Instead, the battle of the two new managers saw Torrealba comfortably come out the looser – outwitted from every angle, his Scorpions struggled throughout to deal with former star Cas Richardson, who toiled superbly to bring Agostinho and González into the game, while Dionísio even managed to elicit a game out of Nic Lloyd, who gave the limping Matthew Logan a truly torrid time and ultimately delivered the second-half cross from which Agostinho nudged home.

Premature perhaps, but the victory saw City cut into second by most of the major bookmakers, behind only Green Island. The GIZ may currently be only sixth, but their outfoxing of an admittedly disappointing ten-man Caires Sports was certainly impressive and gives little cause for hope that a couple of those less expected clubs currently in the TQCC places are going to stick there. Principal among them is Mayo Valley, who beat their rather less impressive fellow promoted outfit Melin & Nader – and, if the Apertura ended right now, they’d be right into the Champions’ Cup group stages a year from now.

Doesn’t end right now, though. Thank God. That’d just be embarrassing.

Talking of which… Marquez-Onwere, who needed a ninetieth-minute curler from Pappas to even earn a draw at home to (drum roll please)… the Indies. Yes, Superfluous FC actually managed to pick up their first point of the season – a measure of how truly blah the naranja’s start to XXV has been, compared to what just about everyone expected. Harvey better be hoping that the new Wendell at the top is as sweet and patient as his stiff unkie Sam…

Elsewhere, ten-man Portuguese won a Globe Cup battle in Rosasharn, and both the Nethertopian sides are still rather good. Arse.

Albrecht Turkish 5-1 Radyukevich CSC (Bakker 42 and 62, Calabrese 45 and 89, Yeoman 87; Clayton 7)
Caires City 1-0 Albrecht FC (Agostinho 57)
Gamboa FC 1-0 AFC MN Smith (Jorge Roberto 10)
Green Island 3-0 Caires Sports (Anwamanë 15, Young 34, Durosa 56)
KT Hotspur 0-2 Arrigo Portuguese (Oughton 6 and 24)
Marquez-Onwere 1-1 Albrecht Independent FC (Pappas 90; Mangabe 6)
Mayo Valley 1-0 Melin & Nader (Tillström 5)
NAPPC 2-0 El din Marbles (González Rodríguez 11, Bertotten 60)
Port of Clotaire 1-4 Tenderville United (Van Dijk 90+1; Deleks 27, Kuypers 35, Night 61, Prescott 61)

Matchday Seven… Everyone drew.

We-ell… Gamboa didn’t – they beat the Indies late on, in a routine win against the division’s worst side by a country mile, and went third with it. Cafundelense managers are where it’s at, it would seem – with Caires City still top, after a wonderful first half against Green Island saw the two favourites share the points.

Elsewhere (yeah, we’re onto the ‘elsewhere’ already… it’s been one of them evenings), NAPPC won. Again. In Onwere. To go fourth. To mean that two of the top four are foreign teams.

Poo.

Tenderville were held, granted, but are still unbeaten and still only two points off the lead. Their draw against injury- and suspension-ravaged Caires Sports should really have seen other sides take full advantage, but they royally failed to a man – Albrecht FC held after a late equaliser from Vorin Dariegan, and Turkish losing for the third away game in succession. Their potentially hugely costly defeat at Harper Street would appear to suggest that while Fabio Mannasuch and his pointy colleagues on the board are very much at home in Albrecht (there’s a disturbing thought), they completely fall to pieces on their travels. Having had Eren Arica sent off for a couple of inane yellows probably didn’t help much, but the manner in which they capitulated late on bodes very badly indeed for their domestic title chances.

Albrecht FC 1-1 KT Hotspur (Wanderley 62; Dariegan 89)
Albrecht Independent FC 1-2 Gamboa FC (Millard 45; Coventry 42, Adekunde og 87)
Arrigo Portuguese 4-0 AFC MN Smith (Macanás 7, Nicholls 10, Lacamoire 56, Oughton 57)
Caires City 2-2 Green Island (González 15, Lloyd 34; va Drake 6, Anwamanë 24)
Marquez-Onwere 0-1 NAPPC (González Rodríguez 90)
Mayo Valley 1-1 Radyukevich CSC (Lilja 5; B. Clayton 53)
Melin & Nader 1-1 El din Marbles (Herbert 11; Hawker 60)
Port of Clotaire 2-1 Albrecht Turkish (Ham 61 and 85; Cohen 30)
Tenderville United 1-1 Caires Sports (Kuypers 39; Adirondu 35)

Matchday Eight… Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo…!!!!!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, sweet Jesus… Why!? WHY!? Why do you hate us so, lord? Why Candelaria And Marquez? What have we ever done to deser… Yeah alright, apart from all that stuff we did, but that doesn’t count. You can’t hold that against us after all this time, and is this particular theatre. And the end of the day, O great beardy-weirdy in the stars, the top three clubs in the Candelaria And Marquez Soccer Championship – and can we just emphasise the first three words, there – should not be from overseas. And certainly not the leaders. It’s just wrong.

But there it is, the facts laid bare, as Courtney Poole made a little bit of history to put through her own net at the Home of the Dragon and hand the three points to Tenderville United – sending the Nethertopians a point clear at the top of the table. For those watching over in the Candelariasian capital, the bigger story involved Turkish’s hopeless collapse on Ratos Island as they threw away a two-one half-time lead to lose yet another match on their travels, but for everyone else the focus was on the biggest own goal in the history of Candelariasian domestic football – not Ms Poole’s, as such, but that of the CMSC in inviting these ghastly parasites into our bosom in the first place. And the Peregrines are only two points further back in third. And Green Island are up to fourth… leaving Caires City as the only proper C&M club in the supposed TQCC positions. This can’t be allowed to continue. Can we start fixing things? Please?

Caires City’s failure to retain their early league lead came courtesy of a certain team known colloquially as Caires Sports. In the wider sense, there’s no argument about who’s winning the battle between these two this season with the multinational Errant Knights six points and seven places better off than the Yaforites, but bragging rights went briefly in the opposite direction this weekend – and it was even a boyhood CSC supporter who sealed the deal, with Alager Adirondu feeding Josh Belmore to finish with four minutes remaining and hand City their first defeat of the season.

With Gamboa and Mayo Valley still in the top half despite defeats, this is certainly one of the more open Apertura’s we’ve seen for years – but try telling that to those clubs yet to make double figures. Besides the obvious nightmares of the Indies, and a worrying start for MN Smith, the two having real shockers are KT Hotspur – a badly bludgeoned force without Jordan Hawker – and the El din Marbles. Who have the aformentioned Mr Hawker on their books now, and the grand total of one victory from Abby Soro’s early managerial career in C&M.

Ha! Stupid rubbish Nethertopians…

Albrecht FC 2-1 AFC MN Smith (Wanderley 28, Kim M. 61; Van der Laan 33)
Albrecht Independent FC 2-2 Arrigo Portuguese (Walker 71, Rogers 90+2; Zapata og 45+1, Oughton 60)
Caires Sports 2-1 Caires City (Valinial 80, Belmore 86; González 73)
El din Marbles 0-1 Radyukevich CSC (Banz 46)
Gamboa FC 1-2 NAPPC (Lacerda 19; Taylor 1, González Rodríguez 77)
KT Hotspur 0-1 Green Island (Anwamanë 40)
Marquez-Onwere 2-0 Melin & Nader (Gatti 26, Pappas 32)
Port of Clotaire 2-0 Mayo Valley (Arrigorriagakoa 20, O’Airmeadhaigh 44)
Tenderville United 3-2 Albrecht Turkish (Gaggioli 5, Reargold 70, Poole og 75; Werner 7, Dirie 17)

Matchday Nine… Oh, Fabio. Fabio, Fabio, Fabio. What were you thinking?

And it had all looked so good, as well. The mockery of us lesser lifeforms regarding his early team selection had been well and truly desolved by early performances, and there was no doubt that Albrecht Turkish were back. Indeed, many had already nailed their colours to the mast and delcared that the Millermen had a better chance of returning to the top than their inner-city neighbours, with that front three set to terrorise the division.

So much for all that, then. Turkish have been absolutely found out in recent weeks – not just away from home, but now by the mind of Keron Alhr… well… Damien Dulars, then, but I’m sure Keron helped. Caires Sports haven’t pulled up the kind of trees we had rather anticipated either, but their defensive gameplan (revolutionary, huh?) had Bakker, Calabrese and Innisvale chasing shadows and a Knights midfield led by a reintroduced Sorin Acraan completely dominated the centre. CSC even survived having Anamer Tascarnin sent off with ten minutes to go, and leapfrogged their opponents in the table to send Turkish crumbling down to eleventh. Where’s your goddess now, Fabio? Nya-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha…

If that particular pointy revolution isn’t going to plan, then at least the one over on the verdent isle is still chugging along nicely, even if the Smudgers proved a surprisingly resiliant opponent this weekend. The GIZ remain bookended by Caires City and Albrecht FC, with the top four looking very likely at this stage to be the major contenders for the rest of the year, with Portuguese quietly tucking in behind them. The bad news is that Tenderville are still top, and emphatically so – a five-nil drubbing of Mayo Valley putting the west Candelarians firmly in their place.

Buuuut… it came at a cost, oh yes. Because you know that Drunn Deleks? Arguably the best striker in the league, and pretty much the reason – with respect to Martinez and Lilithian, et al – why the Dragons are (kind of) the best team in Candelariasian football right now? He’s only gone and torn his knee ligaments, hasn’t he?

No, no, don’t thank me. Thank fate and spreadsheets, and Rennidan’s lack of involvement in WC47 qualifying. But it’s bloody brilliant, isn’t it?

What it all means in practical terms is that Tenderville have lost a hugely important player, and without him Carson’s ability is going to be tested to breaking point. It’s a marathon not a sprint, and all that, but you can surely wave goodbye to Tenderville’s hopes of snatching the little Apertura trophy with this blow, and it’s only a matter of time before the CMSC is ours again.

Unless Green Island go top in a week or two, obviously.

Meanwhile, Abdoulaye Soro has still only won one game, and MarquezOW’s title chances have basically been extinguished already. Not, all things considered, a great weekend to be a Nethertopian, then.

hehehe…

Albrecht FC 1-0 Albrecht Independent FC (Wanderley 71)
Albrecht Turkish 1-2 Caires Sports (Bakker 37; Valinial 18, Acraan 54)
Arrigo Portuguese 2-0 NAPPC (Nicholls 62, Oughton 79)
Caires City 1-0 KT Hotspur (Jones 62)
El din Marbles 2-3 Port of Clotaire (Ricky 10, Pavoni 52; Edwards 18, Sánchez García 47, Ham 89)
Green Island 1-0 AFC MN Smith (Tinúviel 78)
Melin & Nader 1-0 Gamboa FC (Silva 2)
Radyukevich CSC 1-1 Marquez-Onwere (Diarra 45; Sáez 78)
Tenderville United 5-0 Mayo Valley (Meesschaert 18, Deleks 21 and 67, Kuypers 55 and 73)

Matchday Ten… Tommy Tohver’s Radyukevich took a point at Gamboa this weekend. Pretty much par for the course, that, with the most noteworthy feature of the game being that that was the Jukos’ seventh draw of the season. Remarkably, they’ve only lost once and sit eleventh.

The other notable fact about all that is that it leaves Tohver as the highest-ranked Candelarian manager in Candelariasian football. In eleventh. At least he has bragging rights over Mayo Valley’s Zachary Telemans, MarquezOW’s Chris Harvey and the Indies’ Ancil Liebeskind, but that really is a pretty shocking record. Where the hell have all the Candelarians gone?

In any other season, you’ll have taken the fact that we’re even discussing such a thing as evidence that we’re at the doesn’t-particularly-matter stage of the year and that we’re desperate for something to talk about. On this occasion, however, we haven’t got the time to prattle on about it… so let’s just leave it, for now, that the largest island in Rushmore (this really is an increasingly dubious claim, but geography’s a pretty fluid concept, isn’t it?) appears incapable of churning out its fair share of managers. Notably, you can look around the world and count on the fingers of one hand how many Candelarians have made in foreign dugouts. And even then only if you’d been involved in some ghastly threshing accident. Basically, you’ve got Adam Williamson at United Trilan, and even he might be dead by now, for all we know. Other than that, there’s precisely zip. It’s pathetic, frankly, especially at a time when the national team is once again dominated by Candelarians. They’ve got good feet, apparently, but when push comes to shove they’re seriously lacking in the brain department.

Anyway, rant over. MarquezOW drew this weekend, again, despite Gloria Villasenior (who we’re still not entirely sure actually plays for the naranja, but whatever) seeing red for an unladylike lunge at PoC fullback Ricky Archer. Otherwise, there were a set of thoroughly professional performances from the leading contenders – even including Turkish, though their home victory over freefalling Mayo Valley was nothing if not utterly jammy, and served to convinced no-one of their title credentials.

AFC MN Smith 0-1 Caires City (Richardson 62)
Albrecht Independent FC 0-3 Green Island (Anwamanë 45, Mulder 87, va Drake 89)
Albrecht Turkish 2-1 Mayo Valley (Cohen 7, Bakker 42; Szatmári 50)
Arrigo Portuguese 2-0 Melin & Nader (Lacamoire 10 and 57)
Caires Sports 2-1 KT Hotspur (Belmore 15, Adirondu 56; Dariegan 34)
El din Marbles 0-1 Tenderville United (Martinez 6)
Gamboa FC 1-1 Radyukevich CSC (Jorge Roberto 24; Paganel 24)
NAPPC 0-3 Albrecht FC (Chinn 5, Morrison 11, Wanderley 55)
Port of Clotaire 2-2 Marquez-Onwere (O’Airmeadhaigh 60, Ham 70; Oliveira Tavares 27, Souto Maior 61)

Matchday Eleven… Another week, another Turkish cock-up. *Yawn* Thank heavens we don’t have to think of ways to make the league interesting this year.

While they escaped with a point, they were pretty damn fortunate to do even that – with only the Marbles’ profligacy in front of Paxson’s goal ensuring that Mannasuch’s side wouldn’t slip behind the likes of NAPPC and Mayo Valley once more. To be fair, they were facing a Marbles side having arguably their best game of the season, though that really isn’t anything very much to crow about. Whatever way you look at it, their much-discussed 3-6-1 has failed them spectacularly, their hopes of getting back into the ICCs utterly extinguished, and Soro has been left to make the best of a confused squad who haven’t got the faintest clue how to play together. As hopeless as they’ve been at the back – with the manager understandably axing Bartolomeu and González for recent games – the lack of any kind of rapport between Hawker and Schaak and utter toothlessness up front makes them genuine candidates for the drop unless things change very, very quickly.

The Visser cousins really came through for Abby this weekend, but that surely won’t hold off the big man in the dugout from desperately injecting a bit of pizzazz into his team and give not only Damián Jimenez but a certain Arouna Soro a chance over the coming weeks. Theirs is a season that needs to be saved, and Turkish really are in much the same boat – and they haven’t even got any half-decent youngsters to chuck on. The goalkeepers in the YTS side are supposed to be a talented bunch, if that helps.

Perhaps Mannasuch needs to take a leaf out of Christopher Harvey’s book, swallow his pride, and shuffle his pack. Or, looking at it another way, perhaps he really shouldn’t. After all, the MarquezOW manager has tried out just about every player on his squad these last few weeks, from thirtysomethings like George Jones and Kevin Ely to kids like Alejandro Valdez and Robert Wilkinson… and nothing, absolutely nothing, has helped lift this inexplicably awful bunch out of terminal mediocrity. It’s all left the pundits hurriedly looking back on last season’s stats, and desperately re-evaluating the impact of Souto Maior and Oliveira Tavares over Dennin – dismissed by some as a big goalscorer and little more – and the likewise departed Dos Santos.

Harvey has certainly switched back to last season’s Plan A, with big Bas Smit replacing Luís Sáez up front, but honestly nothing was likely to work in the face of Tenderville United this weekend. They may not necessarily have the best players, but the Dragons’ claims on being the division’s best actual team right now are surely inarguable, and they simply brushed the naranja aside.

Elsewhere, it was Albrecht FC’s turn to suffer a considerable blow – a defeat in Melin that sees them drop to fifth, seven points off the lead. Undoubtedly they can recover from that, but it’s perhaps worthy of note that the Scorpions have won the last three Aperturas in a row… and you can pretty much forget about that this time around.

Arrigo Portuguese 4-1 Radyukevich CSC (Al-Fayoomi 21 and 68, Nicholls 48, Randjelovic 77; Davis 60)

Caires City 2-0 Albrecht Independent FC (Richardson 30, Iampietro 33)

KT Hotspur 1-0 AFC MN Smith (Dariegan 29)
Mayo Valley 1-0 Caires Sports (Zoric 59)
Melin & Nader 1-0 Albrecht FC (Herbert 7)
Port of Clotaire 4-1 Gamboa FC (O’Airmeadhaigh 4, Arrigorriagakoa 40, Ham 43 and 56; Potter 50)

Matchday Twelve… I…

I don’t, I…

It, um… It. Eee…

MarquezOW beat Turkish seven-nil.

Right, moving along then, we should start with Albrecht FC’s proper thumping of Radyukevich. This one will have been a particularly satisfying result for Torrealba, given that his opposite number Tohver was widely considered his major rival to take the top job in the aftermath of Le Lan’s exit. As a game, it really was all about the much-needed return to form of Fred Foster – the thirty year-old given a rocket by his club manager in mid-week and answering his critics with two spot-on free-kicks – and the continued form of Jesse Nakatsuru. Simon Chinn up front, meanwhile, is showing enough from his rare glimpses to suggest that Torrealba has little option but to give him starts, mostly likely ahead of the really quite disappointing Kim Mihyeon. She seems unhappy. She’s got the other other Kim there, for heaven’s sake. What more do these women want!?

And MarquezOW beat Turkish seven-nil.

Elsewhere, it’s as you were at the top with the current Big Three really looking very impressive indeed. Tenderville in particular – they’re still undefeated, and managed to put four past Gamboa this weekend despite the continued absence of Deleks. It doesn’t even upset me any more. It’s quite sad, isn’t it, how the human spirit just comes to accept stuff.

Anyway, worthy of a renewed look at Port of Clotaire. Their players might be embroiled in any number of controversies, with Ham Hyi-san recently (probably) dumped for life from his national team, but the player himself is on fire domestically – the first striker to break into double figures this term, his PoC are a completely different proposition than last year and look genuine contenders for the fourth TQCC spot. Their comprehensive beating of Portuguese, who remain a point ahead of them, leaves them in sixth – just ahead of Caires Gukjei, who fended off the ‘challenge’ of MN Smith despite a knock to Jono Plunkett.

Gowon, tell ‘em what happened in Onwere…

Alright, fine. Here’s the thing. You know that whole rigmarole a few weeks ago about how Turkish’s seven-nil drubbing of the Indies was the first CMSC game with that scoreline since the international era began? Well, MarquezOW have gone an equalled it.

Yeah. Marquez-Onwere. The crap ones. The ones who are still only twelfth despite a seven-nil win. Against Turkish. Yes. That Turkish.

Okay, we knew they were dire away from home, but seriously… Ultimately, on the day, Harvey got his tactics entirely right – trust in big Smit to tear Pablo Estévez a new arsehole, was the short version – and Mannasuch, poor old Fabio Mannasuch, got it all so terribly, terribly wrong. The Herald gave not a single Turkish player a mark higher than three out of ten in the following day’s report, and that was probably generous in the extreme. Estévez got a one. Kjarik Tashkir got a big fat egg. It’s lucky for Mannasuch that none of the foreign clubs will have the opportunity to sack their managers until the half-way stage this season, but if he can’t pick his side up from this – and it would take a genius to do so – he’s surely going to have to go. Viella are demanding people.

That’s to say nothing, by the by, of poor Abby Soro over in El din. They drew with Mayo Valley this weekend. They’re sixteenth. They’re poo. You’re welcome.

Seven-nil, though. Seven-nil…

Albrecht Independent FC 0-1 KT Hotspur (Rossi 62)
Albrecht FC 5-0 Radyukevich CSC (Nakatsuru 7, Foster 42 and 89, Palmer og 45, Chinn 87)
Caires Sports 3-1 AFC MN Smith (Littlefellow og 10, Valinial 56, Sinjinir 57; Postman 15)
El din Marbles 1-1 Mayo Valley (Hawker 34; Johansson 6)
Gamboa FC 1-4 Tenderville United (Aldo 24; Kuypers 5 and 6 and 11, Lilithian 90)
Green Island 2-1 Melin & Nader (va Drake 60 and 70; Silva 27)
Marquez-Onwere 7-0 Albrecht Turkish (Gatti 21, Smit 35 and 52 and 80, Cincoski 39, Pappas 61, Wilkinson 81)
NAPPC 0-2 Caires City (Lloyd 44 and 78)
Port of Clotaire 3-1 Arrigo Portuguese (Ham 17, Arrigorriagakoa 22, Edwards 61; Randjelovic 36)

Matchday Thirteen… Yup, pretty much official, then. The top four are much better than anyone else. Proclaim from the hilltops, one and all.

Actually, the Hilltop was precisely where Green Island very nearly came unstuck, but the GIZ still came from behind twice to snatch victory late on, because that’s just what they do. It still seems unexpected, in a way, but Massimo’s side very seldom roll over their opponents entirely – perhaps that’s why they have the worst (or at least ‘least good’) goal difference of the top four – but have the talent, spirit and supreme confidence to expect to win in ninety-five-or-so minutes. That, as the song goes, is why they’re champions.

And it’s why Albrecht Turkish aren’t, and won’t be this season either. Plainly shaken from that result, a largely unchanged side – Mannasuch could have dropped just about everybody, but what good could that possibly have done to their confidence? – fought back well against Gamboa despite going back early on, but disaster is never far away from this shower at the moment. For all their flaws and general mediocrity, the Abiodun side are an attacking force to fret about when they’re on their game and Kayben Nixon’s equaliser deep into stoppage time came after the winger tied the aging legs of Courtney Poole up in knots and left poor Pablo Estévez sitting on the Wallpark Road turf sobbing his eyes out.

Actual sobbing. One is almost beginning to feel sorry for them…

Elsewhere, Albrecht FC brushed aside Port of Clotaire with the embarrassing ease of a side who know in the hearts that they’re bloody good, even if they probably aren’t, but the win of the day was surely reserved for Tenderville – three trouble-free in Arrigo picked up by another club brimming with the C word. The Errant Knights won big too, in Melin, but the late loss of ‘keeper Russ Becker is a real concern, with early scans suggesting that the in-form player has picked up a potentially really rather serious knee ligament… thing. He’ll miss a couple of games for certain, but rumours emanating from up McNeil Bingo way really don’t look at all good, and his long-term absence would be almost as considerable blow to City as Deleks’ is to Tenderville. Not that that’s done them any harm, it would seem, but anyway…

Elsewhere, MarquezOW put, er, nothing past young Mayo ‘keeper Greg Tipping, so well done Gustav Johansson and co, I suppose. The most predictable result of the weekend saw winless MN Smith and the Indies share a point – the kind of result that should see both managers sacked, and all the rumours point to it having happened by this time next week. Jus’ so you know…

AFC MN Smith 1-1 Albrecht Independent FC (Postman 62; Adekunde 39)
Albrecht FC 4-0 Port of Clotaire (Tekeste 7 and 42, Kim M. 45, Cooper og 87)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-2 Tenderville United (Oughton 57; Kuypers 10, Night 56)
Caires Sports 3-3 El din Marbles (Belmore 6 and 15 and 34; Pavoni 8, Ricky 24, Soro 90)
Gamboa FC 2-2 Albrecht Turkish (Tollison 5, Nixon 90+1; Bakker 60, Werner 71)
Mayo Valley 0-0 Marquez-Onwere
Melin & Nader 1-5 Caires City (Herbert 27; González 21 and 81, Williams 35 and 39, Jones 61)
NAPPC 2-0 KT Hotspur (González Rodríguez 53, Plettenberg 80)
Radyukevich CSC 2-3 Green Island (J. Clayton 3, Paganel 38; Anwamanë 17 and 61, Ealovaul 81)

Matchday Fourteen… Ha!

NAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Suck on that, old man!

Yes, it finally came to an end this weekend. Tenderville United lost a game and lost the lead, and about time. Granted, it took the might of Albrecht FC to achieve it, but never mind. Fret not! They can only be on a downward spiral from here on in!

Especially with Brian Carson being linked with a move back to Pocono City… Perhaps it’s just media tattle attempting to destabilise the Tdv Utd project (everything’s a ‘project’ nowadays, *sigh*), orchestrated by the Candelariasian and Peregrinus City press, possibly in tandem with the Jewish lobby and them shapeshifting lizards. After all, it’s hard to see why anyone would want to quit the Home of the Dragon right now, never mind the genius behind their modern renaissance. Sure, they might have given up three valuable points this weekend – creating plenty of chances but seeing Night and Jans unable to match the finishing talents of Deleks – but only a complete nitwit would dismiss their title chances after just one defeat. For one thing, they’ve got arguably the most in-form player in the entire county…ies, in the form of Roel Kuypers, a player who can’t even get into the Nethertopia squad but who’s scoring and creating like nobodies’ business from his spot in the heart of the midfield. The Scorpions certainly needed Rosalia, William and Graves at full stretch to cope with the threat offered not only by him, but Martinez as well – and it’s to their eternal credit that they actually managed it… just.

Elsewhere, there was little to shock. MarquezOW drew for the eighth time this season, with Harvey finally publicly conceding defeat in the title race and admitting that even getting back into the TQCC is probably beyond them. After last year’s near-miss, he would seem unlikely to be given the sack – but the same may not be said for his opposite number this weekend, Abdoulaye Soro. Still with just one win to their name and still in the relegation zone, Santana may well be forced to bring an early end to the much-vaunted Soro project before a potentially hugely costly relegation. When did football in El din go so very wrong, eh? Ahh, the fickle finger of fate, and such forth.

Turkish didn’t win, either. But, y’know… meh. It happens.

Oh yes, and we did get our long overdue first sacking of the season – that of Ancil Liebeskind at the Indies. In actuality, the former Turkish player walked away before he was pushed (or brutally murdered and scattered in Tucker’s carrier bags around Hoxton), and his exit really does represent the end of an era. It was Liebeskind who was effectively responsible for everything the Indies are now, but ultimately the “took the club as far as I could” cliché proved entirely warranted and, if they’re going to go down anyway, they might as well do it with their heads held high and an all-new poker up their collective backside. No word yet on the new man though, and it’s uncertain whether chairman Marc Simmons and the board will be looking for a long-term successor or a stop-gap signing.

Jus’ so you know…

AFC MN Smith 1-0 NAPPC (Harrison 62)
Albrecht Turkish 1-1 Arrigo Portuguese (Yeoman 89; Macanás 45)
Caires Sports 2-0 Albrecht Independent FC (Actarish 42, Sinjinir 87)
Gamboa FC 3-2 Mayo Valley (Jorge Roberto 10, Lacerda 57, Coventry 71; Witt 15, Szatmári 56)
Green Island 4-2 Port of Clotaire (Kures 6, Durosa 24 and 34, Anwamanë 90; Raviranjan og 5, Ham 55)
KT Hotspur 2-1 Melin & Nader (Collins 11, Dariegan 60; Enría 90+1)
Marquez-Onwere 2-2 El din Marbles (Cotuba 27, Smit 61; Ricky 35 and 39)
Radyukevich CSC 0-3 Caires City (Richardson 21, Williams 81, Jones 82)
Tenderville United 2-3 Albrecht FC (Kuypers 3 and 53; Wanderley 29 and 38, Kim M. 90)

Matchday Fifteen… Alright, so the latest news is that Carson isn’t going anywhere, apparently, so Dragons fans can breath a big sigh of relief and concentrate on seeing their side… lose two games in a row and drop to third.

That defeat came courtesy of Green Island, and likewise at home, and certainly suggests that the Dragons aren’t quite at the level to trouble the country’s new elite just yet – and certainly not without a certain Rennidanian. Even so, a moment of magic from va Drake was all that separated the sides until late on and…

Alright, bored of that game now. Let’s got off for the Albrecht derby, shall us?

While far from a classic, featuring two rather desperate sides in both outlook and quality, this really was a potential turning point – and irony of ironies, it was Kjarik Tashkir, the big Yaforite who really has had a godawful start to his career in Candelariasian football, who snuck in the winner from Cohen’s swirling corner, just two minutes after a piece of XXXII-style brilliance from Innisvale had given Turkish the equaliser. Once again, and though they dominated possession and created plenty of chances, the combination of Wanderley and Kim Mihyeon simply looked toothless against even Turkish’s modest defence and, as the Scorpions slip nine points off the lead, that strike partnership is really starting to look like Torrealba’s first major cock-up.

Turkish, of course, are a whopping seventeen points off the top spot – but, to be entirely fair on Mannasuch, that’s not completely their own fault. They’re only eight points worse off than this time last season, when they sat just behind the Scorpions in second place, and their relative woes can be put down in part to the extraordinary form of the pacesetters – and Caires City in particular. With two further victories, City could move onto 44 points – comfortably the highest figure since the Apertura stage was formally introduced, and ahead of Turkish’s own 42 from the XXIX Clausura. In essence, Dionísio is currently on course to knock the achievements of the great Elgin Dannat out of the water (okay, he’d have to win back-to-back domestic titles and go better than the TQCC semi-finals, but the point still stands). He’s simply doing an utterly tremendous job, with a squad combining the superb and the thoroughly mediocre, but it equally makes XXXV an all the more astonishing season when you take into account that Green Island are just two points behind. There’s a handful of very, very good sides in this division right now… and a hell of a lat of dross.

Moving seamlessly on to the El din Marbles, then… Actually, they won their second game of the season, so good for them. MN Smith didn’t, and that’s got to be Hannah out, while the Indies are still winless. Caretaker Anthony Morris looks highly unlikely to get the job full-time, with legendary (eh…) former captain Ravid Pimenta (God knows) widely expected to man the trenches for the remainder of the term. Poor bastard.

Albrecht FC 1-2 Albrecht Turkish (Morrison 39; Innisvale 58, Tashkir 60)
Albrecht Independent FC 0-2 NAPPC (González Rodríguez 14, Santos 24)
Arrigo Portuguese 3-1 Mayo Valley (Macanás 44 and 83, Castro 63; Tillström 74)
Caires City 2-1 Port of Clotaire (Jones 64, Connah 85; Ham 33)
El din Marbles 3-0 Gamboa FC (Horrigan 52, Ricky 60, Pavoni 82)
Marquez-Onwere 2-0 Caires Sports (Souto Maior 2 and 81)
Melin & Nader 3-1 AFC MN Smith (Solaris 59, Enría 61, Marin 68; Postman 64)
Radyukevich CSC 0-1 KT Hotspur (Makedonski 70)
Tenderville United 1-2 Green Island (Abdellah og 85; va Drake 29, Durosa 83)

Matchday Sixteen… Sooo… You know that Tenderville United? You know how they’ve had three big home games in a row now? You know how they’ve just lost their third in a row? Against Caires City? Good.

Someone over at fixtures central has a cruel sense of humour. I wish to mate with this person.

Totally overpowered by a stunningly stunning Caires City, the visitors’ three-one victory ensured that the Errant Knights would take the Apertura title, thanks to the GIZ being held by Turkish. That does make the Super17 round of games a little flat, of course, and we weren’t really helped by results from elsewhere – principally, NAPPC holding Caires Sports to a goalless draw and Portuguese taking the Marbles from behind in El din, because that ensured that the Arrigo club would very quietly sneak up upon us and take the fourth TQCC spot.

Granted, it’s a pretty academic award since qualifying for the group stage from that position is an absolute nightmare, but it’s still a superb validation of everything Carlos Panadero has done since moving down the coast. His side’s confident beating of his former employers makes it perfectly clear that the old lothario has been crying out for a fresh challenge for years and, having finally been granted it, he’s doing a superb job. He’s got talent to work with, of course – principally of the Candelariasianish variety, with Macanás and Randjelovic having award-standard seasons and young William Romero Fernández in goal looking more than ready to done the blue and green sooner rather than later, but most impressively he’s helped turn Harry Oughton into the player we all thought he could be. The Kura-Pellandi may have fallen out of favour international (we think… how would you know?), but he’s been one of the stars of XXXV over in these parts.

So really all that leaves us with is the race for the Globe Cup spots, with five clubs looking for those three places (including, implausibly enough, the likes of MarquezOW and the Spur), while Albrecht Independent face a battle to avoid becoming the worst Apertura side since anyone started paying attention to it… But we’ll deal with all that in a few minutes…

Albrecht Independent FC 0-0 Melin & Nader
Caires Sports 0-0 NAPPC
El din Marbles 1-3 Arrigo Portuguese (Ricky 18; Macanás 21, Nicholls 37, Wilkinson 54)
Gamboa FC 2-0 Marquez-Onwere (Tollison 62, Jorge Roberto 79)
Green Island 2-2 Albrecht Turkish (Anwamanë 10, Saunderson 62; Werner 52, Yeoman 89)
KT Hotspur 2-2 Port of Clotaire (Rataran 18, Szathmári 47; O’Airmeadhaigh 2 and 78)
Mayo Valley 1-2 Albrecht FC (Witt 45; Foster 67, St. Louis 78)
Radyukevich CSC 1-1 AFC MN Smith (Menderes og 21; Postman 55)
Tenderville United 1-3 Caires City (Night 18; Jones 73, Agostinho 76, Williams 81)

XXXV: Matchday Seventeen…

Why, hallo there!

So, for that majority of you who’ve just joined us, here’s the recap. While it all started out like much of a muchness, two clubs went off like a train – Caires City and Tenderville United. Neither had been placed among the top title candidates by most pundits, but both epitomised sublime team cohesion and no little talent under Dionísio and Brian Carson respectively. Given that the former had precisely zip in the way of managerial experience, and the latter was really rather old (and more than a little busy with the Jeru FC job at the same time), it all rather came as a surprise that Tenderville ended up topping the table (creating a bit of history in the process, being a Nethertopian club and all) and going undefeated for bloody ages.

Ultimately however, the Dragons lost star striker Drunn Deleks to injury and the revolving strikeforce that replaced him failed to live up to the challenge set by the outstanding Roel Kuypers, a proper school captain type who can’t even get into his national team squad but who really has been top draw since the very first whistle. A string of fixtures against their major title rivals has cost them the lead, but at the half-way stage they’re still very much in there fighting. As for City, they’ve guaranteed the Apertura trophy already – but a victory this weekend would see them set a record half-season points tally since the Apertura & Clausura… thingies, were formally introduced for XXIX. Which is rather nice.

The other major contenders have been the reigning champions Green Island, and an Albrecht FC side wallowing a tad without Andy Le Lan but still competitive inside the top four. The TQCC places are rounded out, much to everyone’s surprise, by Arrigo Portuguese – now lead by former Marbles man Carlos Panadero, they’re starting to look the best of the rest with Koviljko Randjelovic and the Kura-Pellandi Harry Oughton in particular truly excelling. Caires Sports haven’t been far behind of late, but even their Globe Cup place isn’t guaranteed. Behind them, as it stands, are NAPPC – which absolutely no-one expected, including themselves. The experience of Wais Thwante at the centre of the park and the very promising Sargossan striker Daniel González Rodríguez have in particular served to make them a major irritant, though their militantly defensive style may well get found out a tad as the season progresses.

But as for the rest, there’s been some truly shocking performances – not least from Albrecht Turkish. It all started so well this year, with Mannasuch’s curiously assembled side looking genuine contenders on all fronts, but at times they really have been shockingly bad – and at no point more so than during their astonishing seven-nil defeat to MarquezOW… a result that looks extra-specially woeful in light of the naranja’s own peculiar season. Last term’s runners-up have never looked in the hunt despite starting as the bookies’ favourite, with an improbable number of draws letting them down the most. The absence of Dennin and Dos Santos may well be the major factors, with manager Chris Harvey left desperately rotating his squad to little obvious avail. They’re one of five clubs who could still grab a Globe Cup spot, but they’d hardly deserve it, any more than the equally (but perhaps more understandably) poor KT Hotspur.

CMSC XXXV Matchday Sixteen ~ Globe Cup Shake-Up
6 Caires Sports 16 7 4 5 19 21 -2 25
7 NAPPC 16 7 2 7 13 16 -3 23
8 Gamboa FC 16 7 2 7 20 28 -8 23
9 Albrecht Turkish 16 6 4 6 32 29 3 22
10 Port of Clotaire 16 6 4 6 32 30 2 22
11 Marquez-Onwere 16 4 8 4 25 18 7 20
12 KT Hotspur 16 6 2 8 14 18 -4 20

None of ‘em can hold a candle to the bottom three, though. Albrecht Independent have already jettisoned their manager, and could be on course for the lowest Apertura points tally since we started paying such things any attention, while MN Smith have just a single victory to their names and will surely be giving James Hannah the final kicking in a matter of hours.

But… the Marbles. Let’s talk about the Marbles. Oh please, yes, let’s!

Lesse… massive transfer fee for Jordan Hawker, equally massive one for Cody Horrigan, a couple of seemingly highly useful Sargossans coming across, former club leg end as manager, jolly new owners, big visions of becoming “Rushmore’s football club”, or something of that ilk… aaaand it’s failed miserably.

Soro’s still at the helm, because… well, because the board doesn’t known how badly they’ve done yet (ahem), but this has just been an embarrassing effort from El din club, at a time when they should be making hay at Cathedral City’s expense. A befuddled team turning on themselves and propped up by lone front man Rick-aaaaay’s goals, they’ll be hoping to haul themselves out of the drop zone this weekend.

So. Um. Shall we just get on with it…?

Minute 1 ~ STOP! Ooh-woo! Wait a minute! Arnold Postman!

Minute 2 ~ God, I’ve waited so long for that. Yeah, so Postman – rather improbably – diverts a Bryan Harrison cross past Karl John to put MN Smith up at Port of Clotaire. That’s not jolly news for the Harpies, given that they probably need to win to get a Globe Cup spot, but you’d expect them to come back from this. Ham Hyi-san, he of the unfortunate celebration and subsequent lifetime sacking from his role with Sorthern Northland, has in particular been immense at the fulcrum of a new-look 4-3-3 that has lifted comfortably beyond trouble for the first time in years and at one stage left them poking around the top four.

Minute 3 ~ A rocket of a shot from the Vanorian Morgan Banz puts Radyukevich a goal up at poor old Albrecht Independent. For what it’s worth, the Indies need to win this one to avoid becoming the worst Apertura side of the seven seasons the system has been (officially) in place. It’s a pretty notional concept that means nothing in any practical sense, though (at least, that’s what new manager Ravid Pimenta has been most keen to stress leading up to this game), and it’s perhaps worthy of note that the team they’re aiming to beat – Port of Clotaire in XXXII – picked up just six points and still managed to stay up…

Minute 5 ~ Meanwhile, over in Melin, NAPPC are one up. While they’re hardly the story of the season, the fact that the Peregrines would at this rate pick up a Globe Cup spot by dint of their league position (were they not Nethertopian, an’ all) really is quite astonishing…

Minute 12 ~ Hehehe… A first finish of the season for Robin Smith, who was in the mix for Young Player of the Season not so long ago but has since faded quite considerably. The KT Hotspur player puts his side a goal up in Tenderville, leaving the Dragons rather remarkably heading for their fourth home defeat in a row, and fourth defeat of the season…

Minute 15 ~ Arr, jamlid, they’re not accepting their dismal fate without a fight, it would seem. Luke Rogers tucks in a penalty after Dennin is chopped in the box, and the Indies get their equaliser. Worth keeping an eye on, this one, with the Jukos also aiming to avoid dropping into the bottom three themselves.

Minute 18 ~ A proper playstation move sees Portuguese right-back Andrés Quirot put the home side a goal up against MarquezOW. Three points aside, the Arrigo giants don’t have an awful lot to play for at this point, but the naranja’s inexplicable cluelessness is going to see them miss out on even the Globe Cup at this rate…

Minute 23 ~ A couple of quick goes in the not-at-all-actually-but-it-rather-feels-like-it dead rubber between the GIZ and Mayo Valley sees it one apiece. One mustn’t forget that there is still a title race on, after all…

Minute 27 ~ Another Rogers gets a goal, this time at Harper Street, and this is turning out to be a rather unfortunate Saturday for Port of Clotaire. Two-nil down, and star striker Ham’s just limped off clutching his… his… oh dear, that can’t end well…

Minute 29 ~ Young Nathan Paganel, who’s shown the odd flash of brilliance here and there this term and will probably be the Small Blues’ stringbean fox-in-the-box come the next DBC, gets on the end of Jared Clayton’s nifty through-ball and tucks away with steel balls. Radyukevich back in front…

Minute 31 ~ The tin lid gets put on the Marbles’ Apertura as Albrecht FC go in front. If it stays like this, they’ll also grab the psychological edge of moving ahead of Tenderville in the table.

Minute 36 ~ Oooh, key goal in the GC race… And it’s the unlikely forehead of Jono Plunkett who rises from Ahershk Valinial’s corner to put Caires Sports up in Abiodun. They only need a point here to guarantee sixth from the Apertura, which probably isn’t a bad return though Aiza will be expecting them to push on into top four contention during the second half of the season. Certainly no title bid, and they’re miles behind City, but… Baby steps, and all that…

Minute 40 ~ And is this the turning point in Mannasuch’s season? Victory in the capital clásico, a good draw in Zapata, and now Turkish are a goal to the good at Caires City! And it’s Daniel Bakker, the local lad who’s been the outstanding performer of the front three, who once again saves their bacon with a dipping volley on the edge of the box… Felix Currey could’ve done better, though, and you have to worry about City’s chances with the old man between the sticks for the immediate future…

Minute 46 ~ Second halves underway, and as it stands it’s KT Hotspur joining Turkish and the Knights in the GC… as the Marbles squeeze out an equaliser at the good-ol’, no-of-course-they-wouldn’t-rather-be-somewhere-else, don’t-be-silly Millermen Sheppard Stadium… somehow.

Minute 50 ~ And the Indies are marching towards that most unenviable record… Radyukevich go three-one up through youngster Ben Clayton (no relation… one of them’s Sarzonian, for one thing…). Oh, and MarquezOW have equalised in Arrigo, which doesn’t really change things a great deal.

Minute 51 ~ Whooosh, over to the Bingo hall… and Turkish go two-one up at City! It’s another Bakker effort, this time a tad more scuffed, but it’s ju-u-u-st starting to look as though Turkish have the faintest clue what they’re doing…

Minute 50 ~ Weeee, and back to Hoxton where the Indies have pulled one back. Good for them.

Minute 58 ~ A second from Ras Rataran firms up the Spur’s foot in the GC. Not that they’ll do anything with it, mind you, given that their record in the ICCs really is pretty woeful, but it does suggest they’re at least going in the right direction under Juan Carlos Revault.

Minute 60 ~ And just as I say that, Leopoldo Souto Maior – last year’s Players’ Player of the Season but this time around looking barely half the talent he was – scores his second of the afternoon to put MarquezOW two-one up and into the GC on goal difference. And how much don’t they deserve that

Minute 62 ~ Equaliser for the Indies! It’s three-three over there now, and they’ve added 50% to their season’s goal tally in sixtyish minutes… That probably says a fair bit about poor old Radyukevich, actually, who have been badly missing ‘keeper Christian Fernández Montes this season since his move to Cafundéu, with Daniele Lanchini simply no replacement. Albrecht FC are back in front against the Marbles, by the way.

Minute 67 ~ The elusive Ariel Night pulls one back for Tenderville from the spot, but it hardly matters either way for the Spur as it stands, unless Portuguese can find an equaliser back in C&M…

Minute 71 ~ And would you Adam and Eve it, the Indies are finally in front! Lisa Walker, generally looking lost this season without Katie Cincoski by her side, fires home from all of thirty yards to leave her side heading for their first victory of the season!

Minute 77 ~ Another for the Scorpions, lovely little finish from Jesse Nakatsuru, and GOAL FOR THE JUKOS! WHY AM I SHOUTING!? It’s only an equaliser in a relegation clash nobody cares about, get over yourself. Four-four, then…

Minute 80 ~ GOAL FOR THE INDIES! Oh yes, this is how football should be played! Clueless defending, desperate long balls, miss-hits, comical own goals… brilliant stuff! Ben Palmer put through his own net under pressure from Dennin, and that’s five-four…

Minute 85 ~ Simon Chinn comes on, Simon Chinn scores. That’s just how it works. And the Marbles are taking another pasting… Oooh…

Minute 86 ~ GOOOOAAAAALL!!!!, he said, trying to make things artificially exciting. Big ol’ Lacerda muscles past Anamer Tascarnin for Gamboa’s equaliser, and if I’ve done my maths that puts them into the Globe Cup. If

Minute 90+4 ~ And there, my little piggies, we have the final whistle! And it’s two-time SBBC finalists Gamboa FC who become the first Candelariasian club to make the jump into the Globe Cup. That’s nice for them.

Posh tossers.

In some ways, there could be few surprises here – with few particular forthright predictions existing as to the chances of any of the better ten-or-so clubs. Much of the pre-season nattering surrounded the chances of the fallen giants CandelariaAM and Cathedral City, both financially shot by their relegation and expected by many to struggle compared to smaller but more well-healed sides like McDonald and Ironside.

In the event, the Shining Sons went off an an early winning run while the Cats toiled but, though both would be overhauled by McDonald and Turks’ Club during the Apertura’s mid-way point, their mutual combinations of top-flight experience and young talent eventually told. Both clubs have certainly been saved by their youth set-ups; with CandelariaAM finding stars in holding midfielder George t’son o’Henry (who may well face a nerve-shredding toss-up between C&M’s under-21s and the Ransome-Bkyki Island national team, should the supposedly forthcoming Copa Rushmori decide to let in any of the 100000000000 Candelariasian protectorates in the region for the sake of numbers…) and striker Zlatko Redzic, while Catedral have been a proper offensive threat since Alfonso Yeboah and Evan Pallotta took to the flanks.

Undoubtedly however, the story of the season were Riverton Olympic. One of the oldest clubs in the country – predating even Zapata’s modern name – they were pulled out of amateur obscurity and moved back to the city from the smaller Green Island town of Korslund. Their moment in the sun appeared to be over after the business interests at the heart of their revival pulled out but now, under extremely promising young manager Fran Russell, they not only bounced back up from the semi-pro divisions but are genuine title contenders with the best defensive record in the CMSC2 so far – and would certainly become the top-flight’s most unlikely members in years should they end up stunning the lot of us.

International Round-Up

Aaaand finally, it was a kinda meh display from ours boys and… boys, with only Green Island through to the TQCC knock-out stages – Turkish’s and MarquezOW’s awful domestic form away from home seeing them fall just short, while Torrealba’s Scorpions aren’t Le Lan’s Scorpions, and that’s and end to it.

Curiously, the six CMSC outfits left in the Globe Cup knock-outs then contrived not to win it, though we were treated to the entertaining spectacle of Caires City kicking seven shades of it out of Tenderville, in a rather neat foreshadowing of the domestic events that would shortly follow, and a second ICC clash between the aforementioned Errant Knights and Turkish, with this one going the former’s way. That they were eventually skittled out by Castrograd and lost the chance to become the first club to retain the Globe Cup won’t bother those more than happy to see a club from outside the Big Six-or-so actually win something… and City fans could be left satisfied by the statistic quirk that sees them roar to the top of the global coëfficiants, becoming the first Candelariasian side to be crowned, nominally like, the Best Teem in Da Wurld. Yay for that.

Una Serie De Futol week 43

Pythons 4-1 Valengren Kickers
Pythons secured title victory as they easily overcame Valengren at home. Pythons took a five minute lead when Dean Bowyer scored a spectacular scissor kick. The goal was the midfielder’s first of the season. The second goal came in the 37th minute when top scorer Ishmael Van Dyke forced his way past two defenders to beat Chris Foster in the Kickers goal.
Striker partner Frederico scored just before half time to give Pythons a 3-0 lead. Valengren striker Justin McAllister pulled one back in the 60th minute, but the game was already well beyond them and the demolition was completed when Van Dyke scored again from a free kick, curling the ball into the top right from the edge of the box.
Pythons manager Mark Sloan was jubilant after the game and stated

“We were 4th in midseason, and now we’ve won the league with a game in hand, it’s another great effort from the lads.”

Port Los Renato 0 - 1 Barbossa
Barbossa moved one point a head of Jonastown in the relegation scrap with a game to go. Striker Ariel Veron scored in the second half to give Barbossa the lead and the one goal was margin enough to win by. However Barbossa will need to win next week to guarantee their position in Una Serie as one point may yet prove too little. Goal hero Ariel Veron already looks set to move on, regardless of which league Barbossa find themselves in.

“I don’t see myself playing here next year, perhaps at a bigger club.”

A claim which appears the goal shy forward is punching above his weight.

Ridgemont Town 2 – 0 Almondvale
As the season draws to it’s conclusion, Almondvale slip away. The league leaders at mid season have had a torrid second half, losing nearly half their games. Ridgemont however remain second going into the final week. Goals from Joe Carrol and Tom Smith proved too much for ‘Vale as the away side could not get a foot in the game.

Skyte City 3 – 2 Athletic Khaldoon
Skyte keep the race for second wide open by defeating Athletic Khaldoon in a close fought match. Skyte took the lead through Alberto Xisco but Khaldoon pulled one back when Craig Jones scored. Athletic then took the lead through a Ruud Seedorf free kick. This sparked Skyte into life and two goals in four minutes from Dwight Cole-Price and Gabriel Simeone snatched victory from the team from the capital.

Real Minanda 2 – 0 Jonastown United
Minanda squeezed past Jonastown whose spirited performance didn’t reflect the result. A deflected opener from Rafael Vega was followed up by a last minute tap in for Alan Sherington.
Jonastown’s position in Una Serie will come down to next weeks results in a must win game against PLR.

Royal Khaldoon 1 – 0 Augustus
Mid-table Khaldoon scraped a win in a performance which will surely be manager Keith Fletcher’s final game as the owners look to rebuild next year.
Striker Omid Rustu out jumped everyone in the box from a corner to head the winning goal, but Khaldoon never looked like winning this one. Augustus young side always looked better and showed more creativity, but the downfall of youth was the desire to shoot as Augustus 59% of possession was mirrored by only 5 shots all game.
Augustus coach Gianfranco Vianna commented

“The boys just need to show some bottle in front of goal and have a go, all too often they were in scoring positions just to pass the ball.”

A Second Division is being set-up and will begin shortly
Next season will be RP'd.

The fall of FK Kinitar has resulted in a managerial change - Lorim Rixhë is sacked with immediate effect, and Rizuka Himokane comes in to replace him.

Code: Select all
Season  Champions                   Runners-up               Third Place

1   Stanley University         Markham University       Banks Theological College
2   St. Martin Medical Inst.   Moorcroft University     Markham University
3   Prifysgol Gymraeg          Bradley University       Stanley University
4   Bradley University         Prifysgol Gymraeg        St. Martin Medical Inst.
5   Prifysgol Gymraeg          Snaith Maritime College  St. Martin Medical Inst.

The Welsh-speaking newcomers have done well in their first three seasons in the WZAL. Let us see if they can build on that.

After a slow start, they indeed fought their way to nearly the top of the table - at half-way only Markham University were above them, and then only by two points. At the other end, St. Mark's College and last season's runners up Snaith Maritime College were being cut adrift.

And so it stayed, until Prifysgol Gymraeg incredibly fell apart, with defeats against Bradley, St. Mark's College and most importantly Markham. In the end, Markham walked away with their first title by ten points. St. Martin University took the third IUCC spot on goal difference over their old rivals Moorcroft.

Unreal229 would like to enter these three teams (or how ever many we get) into IUCC17.

Unreatiante University
Hainac University
229 University

Whilst these teams also compete in the Unreal229 second division, they also compete in the University teams cup, with Unreatiante University and Hainac University contesting the final and 229 University beating Cong Technological College in the third place game.

LOCUST Football Championship [Pre-IUCC XVII]

Well, waddaya know? The rather intense boys and girls from the National Maritime Warfare School muscle their way through to the IUCC semi-finals and C&M contriving to have more sides in the quarter-finals than anyone else! The system works! Our jolly amateurs are actually capable of mixing it with the pros-to-be from Dancougar and that. My God, we’re good, aren’t we? Booyah, and such forth.

Any road up, we’d love to inform you that it was for this reason than the League of Candelarias University Sports Teams opted not to finally provide the much heralded shake-up to the system and allow the big unis to compete as single entities rather than be split up into colleges and campuses and whatnot. In reality, they just… kinda forgot. Plus, it’s really nice out at the moment. No-one wants to be stuck in a stuffy boardroom arguing over the construction of conferences, do they? Have a heart.

*sigh*

Let’s go and reformat half a dozen tables, then…

Let's get to it.

If still possible, the Academy Sporting Association enters the qualifiers from the 2170–71 Championship Trophy in IUCC17, the 2172–73 competition having not yet been completed:

Seconds ago: Following new legislation in Aguazul, the importance of winning Olympic gold medals is indoctrinated from an early age.

International competition

Goals in some metropolis, somewhere, let 12 de noviembre join Arcrés Millos in the second TQCC preliminary round, where Millos won and 12 de noviembre didn't. Away goals also let Fábricas keep Penbûlg Donʼûjĭ's cup run brief. Alianza Ciruelas quickly built up a lead against Bradley Swifts and almost blew it, but didn't, and rallied back from a goal down in the return leg to secure the draw before disposing of County Stanley. (This doesn't sound familiar, did I skip them on the wiki update? Nah, just summarized it.)

Okay, so the Pumas fared well against Fareham and Millos beat El Nacional. They then got to play in a really big stadium and won, while San Pablo smashed Tanrısal. Unión de Ciudagua won the copy-and-paste derby, while Fábricas lost to New Cefn Albion, whose great preliminary rounds led to an unsuccessful group stage (hmm...) Alianza Ciruelas and 12 de noviembre were eliminated from the Globe Cup on cue, but Mapabore Juventud won an exhilarating two-legged affair to rather fittingly become Aguazul's only representative in the group stage.

Arcrés Millos wound up in the Group of A Team That Is There Every Time and A Team That We Play A Lot, defeating the former but coming in last on head-to-head results with the latter. San Pablo, for their part, will, uh, maybe get their name on that wiki page more than once? Let's go with that. Unión de Ciudagua were rather more productive despite being winless, or maybe not as far as goals are concerned...well...actually almost as productive when I look at it. Mapabore Juventud weren't particularly close to that home final, but they made the points column look nice.

And Moacom got to keep their money to spend on Arcrés Millos, in the hopes that this season would bring a title...

The season
                     W D L GF GA GD Pts
Arcrés Millos 8 6 4 33 25 8 30 C/TQCC
12 de noviembre 8 6 4 25 18 7 30 TQCC
Alianza Ciruelas 7 8 3 24 20 4 29 TQCC
CA Condadore 8 4 6 24 21 3 28 GC
Mapabore Juventud 6 8 4 25 21 4 26 GC
San Pablo 6 8 4 26 25 1 26 GC
Trecelunas FC 6 8 4 20 21 -1 26
Piratas de Grisolon 3 8 7 22 28 -6 17
FC Nacional 2 8 8 26 36 -10 14 Relegated
Estudiantes de Íguen 4 2 12 14 24 -10 14 Playoffs

...Where to begin?

I guess at the beginning would be a good idea. No, not the beginning of the season--if we'd had a fixtures list and knew what kind of insanity was going on on the last day this might be structured really differently. I mean the beginning of the league, precipitated when Trecelunas FC somehow managed to win its predecessor, you know? Okay, so quite possibly you don't. But when I was making all those wiki pages, I ran across plenty of mistakes. Some minor, like flat-out wrong sentences or ones that would have benefited from a well-placed comma, and some major. Like why Piratas de Grisolon were ever in that one SBCC, or why Deportivo Peralta weren't considered for that one Cupcake Cup title. The FIX! is out! Until our not-particularly-local Namiri-Casaran geek explained some tiebreakers that mean Trecelunas probably should have won anyway.

But now, at least, we have wiki pages. That are now out of date. Except FC Nacional, of course. Mwajajajaja. Despite Alfonso Clavet's golden boot, they're going back down to the second division. Estudiantes de Íguen, oddly enough, were just as bad this season, goal difference and all. Thankfully, they shut up about the takilan conspiracies to concentrate on survival. We'll get to that later.

So yeah. Despite the rumors of Cristian Delgado's departure, Arcrés Millos were good enough to win the closest title race yet. Led by midfielder Miguel Rionda...(you know, that guy), their all-out attack led to a popular title. (And Delgado did step down, going out on top.) They could only do it by beating out 12 de noviembre, though, the only visitors to win in Estadio Moacom. Though the defense, anchored by Neron Taffarel, took yet another step up, it wasn't enough. Or maybe, despite Frois' brilliance, the offense wasn't enough. Or we could just blame the midfield. Sounds like a plan.

The TQCC delegation is rounded out by Alianza Ciruelas, only one point behind. They drew 6 on the road, the most in any such @@result@@ in @@place@@ fun factoid (in a three-way tie with both of Estudiantes de Íguen's loss categories). In other meaningless trivia, the second- through fifth-place teams all conceded eleven goals in their road games. The third and fourth both scored eleven on the road, and it was CA Condadore who took the first Globe Cup slot. Once again, they did it in standard style. To be fair, looking at the teams before the season began, you got the feeling it was going to be tight...

...but not this tight. Murphy's Law decreed that as soon as I thought of a "far-out" hypothetical, not only would it come true, but it would do so in a more confusing and infuriating way than I planned. Mapabore Juventud are fifth, despite scoring one of Estudiantes de Íguen's six away goals, by three goals above San Pablo. They became the first team in the bottom half to qualify for international action, but we didn't have enough slots for Trecelunas FC, even closer to San Pablo than the Pumas were to Mapabore, to join them. Comeuppance under the circumstances, though. They would have been the first team to qualify from Aguazul despite a negative goal difference since, uh, themselves and Piratas de Grisolon in that bizarre season two. Unless there are teams in the second division that aren't telling us something, which there well might be.

Speaking of Piratas de Grisolon, and just when we thought we were done with tiebreakers, they and Estudiantes de Íguen tied for overall eighth and ninth place. But goal difference, thankfully, sorted it out. With -10 as compared to -14, the Pirates were safe and the non-students took on the second-division runner-ups.

So...yeah. Ojedo Cerro won the Clausura, with AC Mineros second. They will participate in the SBCC, and Estadio Sango (23,000) in San Pablo bids for the final. Unión de Ciudagua had built up enough of a lead to win the overall division, ahead of...Deportivo Peralta.

A 0-0 draw in the playoff was an ideological victory for Estudiantes de Íguen, but that wouldn't be enough. In front of more than three times as many fans, the replay remained scoreless...

...until Yarden Brizuela's extra-time goal kept the visitors in the top flight.

And yet, when we look back upon this cycle in years to come, which game will stand out? Perhaps the replay, yes. Perhaps the champions' defeat of Petardos S/A, or maybe their 3-3 draw with San Pablo...or their 3-3 draw with FC Nacional. Or was the most important game of all in Mapabore?

It was there, after all, that Aguazul successfully hosted the twelfth Globe Cup final, proving to ourselves and the world that we could let a team of commies come in, lift a major international trophy, and go out without causing an international incident.

There's no excuse now.

Mid-Season Transfers

Overview
This transfer season will probably be one of the most voracious in the history of the league. For the time being, the teams are more or less on par in terms of quality of players and what not. Over the course of this transfer season, most clubs will be paying a lot of money to get some sort of disparity. As a result, we should expect a lot of big winter contracts to be signed, and a lot of capital to be thrown around. Although there is a large domestic market, the teams are likely to look mostly in the international markets for first-class and young players. In this case, the norm is quantity and quality.

Eleptik
Darsí Bon (Striker): Darsí Bon, international football player that preformed during Di Bradini Cup 10 and World Cup 47, was originally promoted from Illusqué's youth team to the senior side prior to the beginning of the new season. However, Illusqué's preformance thus far has left some things to be desired. The team has lost ten of its nineteen matches, allowing thirty-one goals. As a result, Illusqué has pledged to reinforce its defense. Realizing the costs of these reinforcements, management decided to make extra revenue by selling Darsí Bon, who after his World Cup performance is considered a star player. Eleptik, currently in first and looking to maintain that position, is looking for a "killer" striker. As a result, Illusqué and Eleptik came to an agreement for the latter club to pay Illusqué Ŗ500,000 to break the clause in the young striker's contract. Eleptik and Bon's manager came to an agreement over a contract worth Ŗ11,000,000 for three years.

Lawrence Hart (Striker, Valipac): Lawrence, currently twenty-one, is a Valipac striker finishing a season with West Hardwick United, which finished second last season. Although he was a second-string player, he is full of talent. He signed a contract with Eleptik for a total of Ŗ7,000,000 up front, plus a possible Ŗ550,000 in bonus (benchmarks being: 30 goals, 50 goals and 50 caps), for four years. He has also been called up to the Valipac National Football Team to represent the country during the World Cup 48 qualifiers. He is likely to be a starter in Eleptik, giving him plenty of experience.

Macabee Hawks
Gregor Ger (Central Defender): Gregor Ger was procured by Macabee Hawks from a minor regional league, after scouts had reported his talent. At only seventeen, Gregor Ger was offered a contract for Ŗ1,700,000, for two years, to play for the Hawks in the Imperial First Division. Gregor Ger will also be called up for the U-21 National Football Team, to participate in the upcoming Di Bradini Cup. He is a fast and intelligent central defender. Without a doubt, he is an upcoming "Ríokmark farm" for the Macabee Hawks, who will probably shape him into a first-class player by the end of his tenure in the team.

Royal Club Española
Oleksandr Blūms (Central Defender, Somewhereistonia): At 30, Blūms' future is limited to a maximum of an estimated four to five years, depending on his form as he progresses in age. Nevertheless, with Royal Club Española dead last they are looking to bolster their defenses with experienced defenders. As a result, he was transferred from Metalurgs (Season 4 champions of the Meistrliiga) for Ŗ1,200,000. The relatively inexpensive transfer will probably help push Royal Club Española out of the relegation zone.

Eduardo Cima (Central Defender, Uiri): Cima, 19, was left unsigned during the Uiric football season. He is not known to be an outstanding football player, although he has much room for development. Cima's agent and Royal Club Española came to agreement over a contract worth Ŗ750,000, with an additional Ŗ200,000 bonus should the club escape the relegation zone by the season's end. The objective of the bonus is to force Cima to exert himself during defensive operations, as to drive him towards development in his experience and capabilities. His contract is worth three years, at which time it will either be renewed, or he will look for another club to sign him.

O-LEAGUE SEASON ONE - PART ONE

Well, here we are, the beginning of a new era for Krytenian club football. Will it be the same old names again? Will there be new challengers? Can anyone beat Ousevale? Fifteen teams are itching at that particular privilege...

Matchday One
A balmy August afternoon and perfect weather for a new season of football. The honour of the O-League's first-ever goal falls to Dereapolis striker Robert Hall; his strike on seven minutes is the first of six the Derries notch up at Wanderers Park. They lead the table after a good day for the travellers, with three draws and five away wins. It's also a good day for Leston Town's new striker Yoshiaki Soma; the Dancougar international nets a debut hat-trick over Bradwell.

Matchdays 2-5
You'd have got good money on Mercia Bromham being top at this point, but there they are, sitting pretty above Ousevale and Emberton Reds. Just don't mention this to Avidia "One Point From Fifteen" City.

Matchdays 6-10
Oh, to be a Bromham City fan. There's a fair bit of schadenfreude to be taken from them putting seven past D****** S*********'s old favourite club, Aigburth...but they're still eleventh after Matchday Ten. They're not even the only seven-nillers of this part of the season - the Reds knocking the stuffing out of Ellisham. So much for Kiefer Lloyd.

Ousevale are a point clear now, ahead of surprise package Avidia United. Not bad from an Eagles side that traditionally struggles though.

Matchdays 11-15
The Tigers of Ousevale enter RAWRCRUSH mode on Matchday Twelve. Their victims? Aigburth "Seven-Nil" Athletic. Borough go for gold though; they break the O-League record (and Eric Bangra) by putting an incredible eight past the hapless Latics. It's still Tigers and Eagles at the top at halfway; good on Caversham though, who manage to sneak into third on Matchday Eleven and stay there.

At the bottom, it's all gone topsy-turvy. Dereapolis City are in the drop zone after an alarming absence of form, but that's nothing compared to rock-bottom Casuals. Remember, this is the side that has got further in the Champions' Cup than any other Krytenian team. Paul Walton is a worried man.

Matchdays 16-20
New year, same old crap for Casuals. Matchday Sixteen sees them hammered seven-nil by Avidia United and Paul Walton gets the boot. New manager Mark Olic has work to do to keep Osteria up. Ousevale, meanwhile, finally decide to lose a match; Caledon Simpson are the lucky recipients of three tasty points.

After two-thirds of the season, Avidia United - Avidia United! - are top of the table, one point ahead of Ousevale, with the chasing pack a good seven points back. Looks like a two-horse race for the title then. At the bottom? Casuals in sixteenth, three places and three points from safety; Bromham City and Krytenia Emberton (seriously, what was wrong with Patriots? Yeesh!) fill the other two spots.

O-LEAGUE SEASON ONE - PART TWO

Ten games to decide the fate of the first O-League season. Hang on to you titfers.

Matchday 21
Who wants to win the league? You'd be forgiven for thinking neither Ousevale nor United did, what with them both losing and all. The Eagles seemed to think that giving their opponents a three-goal start was fair play; not that Emberton Reds complained, of course, whilst Ousevale just never got going against Secklow.

Casuals, at least, were making a fight of it, a goalless draw with Bradwell hauling them above Bromham City into fifteenth.

Matchday 22
Avidia United dropped the idiot ball for the second week in a row as they lost to Mercia; Ousevale nipped into top spot with a Roshanak masterclass as the Starblaydi striker (no, not the Elven cock, the other one) helped the Tigers to a three-nil win over Caversham. Secklow, meanwhile, heaped more misery on poor Casuals, sneaking into third while they were at it.

At the bottom, Krytenia Emberton hauled themselves out of the dropzone at the expense of Bradwell after Mo Nord scored twice in three minutes to salvage a point at Ellisham.

Matchday 23
Stop the presses! It appears that Casuals aren't actually that crap after all. Mark Olic's men thumped Caversham five-nil to aid their quest for survival.

No change at the top as Avidia United and Ousevale both notched up two-nil victories; Avidia City, meanwhile, put themselves into a potential Globe Cup place after defeating Emberton Reds.

Matchday 24
The Avidia derby leads to a United victory, Liam George scoring the only goal of the game, but with Ousevale ruthlessly kicking Casuals square in the nutbags, they're still second.

Talk of the day though was the ding-dong battle between Ellisham and Reds at Wanderers Park. Ellisham came back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2, only for Cachado and Barcali to kill off their hopes of any points.

Matchday 25
Surely it's Ousevale's title now? A one-nil win over Leston, coupled with Avidia's dire draw with Ellisham, puts them four clear at the top with only five to play. United's only hope right now is that they're still in touch when they play the Tigers on the final day.

Matchday 26
It's like football "Chicken", this. Ousevale almost, almost, throw it away against Bromham City before coming back for a three-two win, United win as well, and it's as you were.

At the bottom, the aforementioned City are now seven points from safety; it's not looking good for the Midlanders.

Matchday 27
Casuals are refusing to die! Victory over Bromham City doesn't quite relegate their opponents, but only a mathematical miracle can save them now. Osteria are now five points off survival...can they do the impossible?

At the top, Avidia United stumble against a rejuvenated Dereapolis City, whilst Ousevale stalemate against Krytenia "Thirteenth In The Table" Emberton. Five points the gap there, too, and almost no-one notices Caledon Simpson sneak into fourth in all the confusion.

Matchday 28
Ka-chunk! Aaaand there go Bromham City. Ironically, they do manage to win...but so do Krytenia Emberton, who beat Casuals two-one. It's Aigburth in the hot-potato seat now, four points above Bradwell Saints, and six above Casuals Osteria. It's all looking grim at New Coalfields.

At the top, proof that it's not over till the portly woman warbles. Ousevale manage to louse it up against second-bottom Saints, turning them into third-bottom Saints in the process. United eat up Secklow with a fork and spoon, a four-nil win putting them just two points behind the toothless Tigers.

Matchday 29
HOLY MOTHER OF WHAT THE HELL BARBECUE! Or, in English, AVIDIA UNITED ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE! They'll have Jonathan Barcali and his Reds to thank for that, as they sent Ousevale down one-nil. United's similar win over Caversham might not have been pretty, but it means Avidia on fifty-six points, Ousevale fifty-five.

Bradwell, meanwhile, are relegated, but the surprise is that Casuals are not quite yet. The Osteria side swept Saints aside four-nil, and with Aigburth losing to Ellisham, Casuals have a faint glimmer of hope going into the last day.

Oh, and for those that care, Caledon beat Secklow to assure third spot and a Globe Cup place.

Matchday 30 follows in PART THREE!

O-LEAGUE SEASON ONE - PART THREE

May 9 - Matchday Thirty

15:56
- It's Sunday afternoon, you've just had your roast whatever, I'll wager...now, are you sitting comfortably?

Thought not.

Just under five minutes to go before the climax to a thrilling season of O-League football...and there are three BIG games to watch out for.

In the Relegation Lightweight Championship, Casuals Osteria will be looking to commit Grand Theft Football and escape the drop. They play Emberton Reds at New Coalfields. Meanwhile, Aigburth Athletic travel to the Midland Stadium to face Mercia Bromham knowing that a point will save them...and a point is enough to secure Mercia a Globe Cup spot too. If they lose...then they might be overtaken by the Reds. So survival versus Globe Cup at both grounds there.

But you don't care about that, oh no. That's just the undercard for the O-League Heavyweight Championship Of Krytenia! The Marshall Warzycha Shield is at the Southern Arena; all it's missing is a name to be etched onto it. If Ousevale can win, they'll get their hands on it. If not? Then Avidia United go the ball as the season's true Cinderella Men. OK, no time for a cuppa, but if you want to go grab a beer, you've got time. Just.

16:00 Eight synchronised whistles...and we are underway!

16:07 OUSEVALE GOAL! OUSEVALE GOAL! Roshanak gets it, and battle is well and truly joined! Tigers lead the table as it stands, but can they last out the next 83 minutes?

16:12 GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Freddy Osterwald! Freddy Osterwald for United! We've had two goals today, both at the Southern Arena...and it's one-one! Avidia maybe?

16:16 GOAL AT COALFIELDS! Stephen Presley, and Casuals are doing what they can at their end in the relegation fight.

16:26 Oh....YES! It's on for Casuals, it's on for Mercia, it's Sam Miller grinding up Aigburth! One-nil!

16:42 FREEEEEEEEEEEEDDYYYYYYYYYY! It's that man again! It's like none of the other games matter, all the goals in the important games, and that is Avidia United two, Ousevale Borough one!

16:50 Now, the KFA have said that all the second halves will kick off simultaneously to avoid too much discrepancy in the two releGlobetion matches, so with the half-time whistle at The Mound, everyone will be back at five past. Go. Tea. Now. Or, you know, more beer. Or something stronger if you're a Tigers fan. Or Casuals. Or Aigburth.

17:05 And we're off again. Forty-five minutes of pleasure, pain, and maybe the odd goal or two.

17:06 Goal at Mercia Stadium...Conor Garrido, one-nil to relegated City.

17:10 Derries one, Ellisham nil. Alex Previn is probably the only person in Krytenia who cares right now though. Oh, and that's a second for Bromham, too...now why couldn't they play like that more often? Jeremy Campbell with the goal.

17:12 GOAL AT THE SOUTHERN ARENA! TWO-TWO! Luke Chaddingley, of all people, his second of the season, and Ousevale back in with a shout! And a penalty at Mercia Stadium...and by the time you can say Robert Kapromanowitz, he's put it home. Bromham two, Emberton one.

17:17 GOAL! GOAL! GOAL! It's Ian Betts for Mercia, two-nil to the home side, and Casuals are two goals from safety. If you have nails left at this point, then you have no soul.

17:21 OH MY! OH MY! It's that damn Starblaydi again! Soraya Roshanak, Ousevale three-two up! I ain't heard no fat lady!

17:29 Ouch. Shaun Cansdell crashed into the post defending a corner for Casuals. That'll take some time to treat.

17:35 For those keeping track, Tim Di Stefano makes it one-all at the County Ground for Ellisham.

17:36 Reports of a Gordon Ormondroyd goal for Caversham against Caledon, and by our calculations that will put - I. DO. NOT. BELIEEEEEEEVE IT! There's been another goal in Ousevale...and guess what? Three-three! David Kolic may just have won the league for United!

17:40 Kevin Saxon scores fo-GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! OUSEVALE FOUR, UNITED THREE, PASCAL GERMANO! Whatever they've put in the Ousevale water, I want some!

17:41 By the way, that was Saxon for Secklow against Avidia City. One-nil Hoops.

17:48 GOAL MERCIA! Mark Crossley makes it three-nil...only goals scored is keeping Athletic from the drop! One more goal for Casuals and...oh my, all hell will break loose.

17:50 One minute of stoppages at the Southern Arena...two at the Mercia Stadium...and six minutes at New Coalfields. thanks to Cansdell's post-smacking injury.

17:51 THAT'S IT! OUSEVALE WIN THE LEAGUE! Final whistle...and the United players are absolutely inconsolable. So close...and at least there's a Champions' Cup place waiting for them.

17:52 All over for Aigburth. Now they just have to sit and wait. Mercia Bromham are in the Globe Cup though, and as things stand, Emberton will fall to sixth.

17:54 GLASSCOCK! GLASSCOCK! ADAM GLASSCOCK! The Krytenian international scores...for CASUALS OSTERIA! Osteria look like they've just pulled off a miracle!

17:56 FINAL WHISTLE AT NEW COALFIELDS! Casuals Osteria two, Emberton Reds nil. Casuals stay up, Aigburth down, OH MY GOD!

International University Challenge Championship 17 presented by Radio Ad’ihan International

There were no official hosting bids for the IUCC17 finals, so the Executive Committee awarded hosting rights to the City of Ad’ihan.

Entered teams
33 teams were officially entered; for the first time ever a nation was granted four teams in the IUCC after the Executive Committee voted overwhelmingly to allow defending champions Pine Bluff State College (DAN) in to defend their title. Therefore, a total of 34 teams will take part in IUCC 17.

There will be two qualifying stages — the first involving 12 teams (including Pine Bluff State). This will take the form of four groups of three, playing each team twice on neutral ground. The top two from each qualifying group will proceed to the second qualifying stage, and join eight other teams in that stage. That stage will be held as a knockout stage.

FIRST QUALIFYING STAGE GROUP DRAW
Group Q1: Pine Bluff State College (DAN), 229 University (UN#), Strawberry Fields University (TAE)
Group Q2: Versichi A&M (KIN), Portland Business Library (ASA), IML/Porto Lacruz (CAF)
Group Q3: Reynea Area Community College (TAE), Kinitaria National University (KIN), Hainac University (UN#)
Group Q4: Engenharia/UFSJ (CAF), Central University of Mi'ato (KIN), Unreatiante University (UN#)

SECOND QUALIFYING STAGE DRAW
The winners of each tie qualify for the finals.
K1: Q1-1 v Taeshan Air Force Academy (TAE)
K2: Q2-2 v Van Prooijen University (ASA)
K3: Q3-1 v Comunicação/Católica (CAF)
K4: Q4-2 v National Maritime Warfare School (CAM)
K5: Q1-2 v Valanora College of Lasers and Technology (VAL)
K6: Q2-1 v St. Martin University (WZI)
K7: Q3-2 v Ad’ihan University of Science and Maths (ADN)
K8: Q4-1 v Shentarong Southern University (VPH)

The losers of ties K1 to K8 then play each other in a repechâge knockout tournament, until two teams remain. These two lucky losers will join the eight qualifiers and the following teams in the finals:

AUTOMATICALLY QUALIFIED
Hatton College of Medicine (ADN)
Frontier College (ADN)
Hazuki State University (DAN)
Baptista College (DAN)
Wean State College (DAN)
Vahala University (VAL)
Hondo College (VAL)
Markham University (WZI)
Prifysgol Gymraeg Caernewydd (WZI)
Gassett College (CAM)
St. Mary’s College, Albrecht University (CAM)
Jishmid College (VPH)
North Bektys College (VPH)
Paruvia Institute of Technology (ASA)

There are three teams from Dancougar who have automatically qualified as Pine Bluffs State has to undergo the entire qualification process.

The 24 teams will be sorted into six groups of four, with the group winners and best two runners-up qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Una Serie de Fútbol

Port Los Renato 1 – 2 Jonastown United
Jonastown survived looming relegation by holding onto their lead over Port Los Renato. Goals from Carlos Borges and Hidalgo saw Jonastown race into the lead in their bid to remain in the Una Serie. Jonastown were on the brink of relegation and were it not for the three points gained in this must win final fixture they would have returned to League I.
The result looked in doubt when PLR rallied and pulled a goal back in the 60th minute. But Lionel Vega’s goal was the only breakthrough resulting from the pressure thanks in part to Warren Beattie’s immaculate goalkeeping.

Pythons 1 – 0 Barbossa
Champions Pythons ended Barbossa’s stay in Una Serie defeating them 1-0 on the final day of the season. Tim Wilcox left footed drive ricocheted off the post to kill Barbossa’s chances of survival in the 38th minute.
Barbossa coach Dennis Vaz Tae stepped down following the team’s relegation and the search for a manager will begin shortly after the summer break.
Pythons manager Mark Sloan commented after the game

“It’s a shame to see Barbossa go down, they’ve always been a big fixture in the league and next year will be odd without them.”

Real Minanda 2 – 2 Royal Khaldoon
A standing ovation despite the draw exhibited the feeling of loss felt by Khaldoon fans as Keith Fletcher is set to be replaced by Somewhereistonia Tarmo Mäe.
Minanda took the lead from an Alan Sherington header in the 18th and the lead was doubled 5 minutes later when Lillian Blanc’s free kick crept under the wall. The Just before half time Omid Rustu pulled a goal back, side-footing past the Minanda keeper. Late in the second half the away fans stirred and the team rallied, buoyed by the fans Adailton scored from the edge of the box before running to celebrate with his manager.

Athletic Khaldoon 0 – 4 Almondvale
Athletic went into the summer on the back of a home drubbing. Almondvale exploded out of the blocks, with Steve McBrin scoring twice in quarter of an hour. Almondvale kept up the pressure and added a third in the 40th minute. Seb Guardila rounded the defence before smashing into the back of the net.
Before fulltime, Fletcher Goodwin brought on youngster Adrian Belmont who assisted the fourth goal. The 15 year old cut back for Ronnie Hendry to slide the ball into the open net.

Skyte City 1 – 0 Valengren Kickers
Skyte pinched second place in the league with a late goal against strugglers Valengren. As the Kickers faced a barrage of shots, keeper Chris Foster was named man of the match with the 83rd minute striker being the only one to get past. Andrew Yorke’s strike was a desperate attempt which barely escaped the clutches of the on form keeper. After the game Foster said he was

“gutted to have one sneak past. I’d had a great game and thought we might always pinch a late winner, which wasn’t to be.”

Ridgemont Town 0 – 1 Augustus

The youngsters of Augustus knocked Ridgemont off second following a controversial penalty decision. Under closer inspection the suspected handball actually deflected off Ahmed Khan’s hip.
Diego Canizares stepped up and wrong footed the keeper sending him the wrong direction and snatching the victory.
Watching from the sidelines was the injured Hugo Anderson who hopes to make a return to action mid season next year. His presence has been missed in the closing fixtures.

Collegiate Sporting Alliance, 1774 season

Due to slight differences between the Vephrese and Ad'ihani calendars, this year's CSA regular season comes to a close just before the IUCC gets underway. This means two things:
  • The 1774 national championship has been postponed until after the IUCC finishes.
  • It is very possible (perhaps even likely) that the 1775 season will be completed before the next IUCC, which would necessitate a different method for choosing Vephrall's IUCC18 participants, in order to keep the 1774 champions from being left out. More details will come later.

Note a slight change to the table formatting this year - the left column now shows the final CSA coefficient for all 68 teams. Remember, the top sixteen go to the national championship, unless a conference champion finishes outside the top sixteen (and that happened this year).

CAFUNDELENSE LEAGUE - FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON ENDED

The first half of the season 15 of the Cafundelense league has ended. As everyone in the whole world must know now, this part of the Cafundelense season is the least important, being only useful to get the players fit (with the exception of the Empress Cup [former Emperor's Cup], which has some importance... curiously for this season it loses some importance, actually, as its winner won't go to the TQCC, but to the Globe Cup instead). The State-related competitions don't have practical importance. Other competitions are State Championships, and the only reason why the supporters want to win this is because they have to defeat their rivals to get the trophy. And that’s the only reason that they exist too. The State Championships and the State Champions Cup have tradition, while the Empress Cup has practical importance. See the names of the state champions (yes, I'm lazy and won't update the introduction):

JUTA STATE: Cafundó do Juta
LASFT STATE: Petardos S/A
CENTRAL STATE: Serrano
TITÃ STATE: Imperatriz
DUNBOOR STATE: Dunboor FC
OLD CITIES STATE: Internacional de Penderia
ESPINAL STATE: Engenheiro Peres
COAST STATE: Cruzeiro do Sul

Champion: CAFUNDÓ DO JUTA!

Reactions: ENOUGH TO SATISFY THE SUPPORTERS? For many seasons, the supporters of Cafundó do Juta were expecting to see the team winning a national title, not only state ones. The team failed to achieve this, and some fans started to get worried that the team would end like SC Lasft or Clube Imperial, which faced serious falls in team quality. The international title of the Globe Cup controlled them and made them happy for a while, but now the pressure seemed to return... this State Champions Cup can be a small competition, but maybe can keep the supporters satisfied for a while... not much, of course, as this competition is really small, maybe even smaller than winning the state championship. So, it serves as a proof that the team is still good, and maybe as a promise of a better future for the team.

THE EMPRESS CUP

The Empress Cup has the same format of the former Emperor's Cup, with the name being the only difference, after the former emperor Hector Van Tocco resigned and his daughter Alice Van Tocco became the empress. A bigger competition than the last ones, it involves 64 teams. Finally, the CCFM have decided to make serious rules about the participation in the cup: the 40 teams from 1st and 2nd divisions, the best 12 from the 3rd division, the top 8 from the 4th division and the promoted 4 from the 5th division in the last season participate. See the results (obs: no away goals rule). And now it is seeded for the first stage as, following the criteria, the 32 best teams play the first game away, being separated in the draw from the other teams. Note that its champion goes to the Globe Cup:

PORTO LACRUZ WINS THE EMPRESS CUP!

Reactions: ONE OF THE TOP TEAMS? Porto Lacruz's success in this Empress Cup, combined with the team's previous success in the State Champions Cup and good performances in the First Division with participations in the Globe Cup put the team in the spotlight. With an excellent squad, as many excellent players were bought with money, money which came from an unknown place, the team surely looks good on paper, and the performances are proving this point. Now this major trophy raises Porto Lacruz in an interesting position in the Cafundelense league: the possibility of being more than a top 8 team, and try to threaten the big four. Many people believe this is possible, but we'll only see the truth when the Cafundelense First Division of this season finishes.
