Sports: No Medals Yet For The Oaklands
A Review of Day 2, and a Preview of Day 3
by Jackson Nugent, Olympic Correspondent
Day 2 saw the first of the cycling, with two men and two women in the two time trial events. However, no rider finished near the top, with Liz Adams finishing in 29th place and Evelyn Murphy in 45th. Cycling correspondent Michael Dueman interviewed Liz Adams. She said, " It wasn't a bad cycle but looking back I see that I should have started more aggressively to build up more speed. Ah week, I know for next time." In the Men's event, Brandon Brown finished 62nd and James Wood finished 99th, but one sensed they were holding back to save energy for the more important road race tomorrow.
Elsewhere, the women's Handball and Hockey teams impressed with victories. The Handball team beat Britonisea 29-24, with Kirsten Morris scoring 11 times. Hayley Richards talked to her afterwards, and she said, "I think we played well, especially as it is our first ever international match. Our speed on the attack was a strong point, and I'm very glad that I have scored so many to help us to the win. Hopefully this is the start of a winning streak that takes is far in the competition." The Oakland won their Hockey match against Livonia 3-1, with two goals from Jane Harrison and one from Lauren Mortar making it an all round impressive win. Charlotte Baxter, head of USO Hockey, spoke to Lewis Marigold. "I was very impressed with the girls today. We had rock solid defence and an imaginative strike force that found ways through a pretty strong opposition defence. I couldn't be more pleased right now." Neither football team were as fortunate, however, with the men's team losing 1-0 and the women's team losing 3-2.
Day 3 brings Handball, Hockey and Basketball, all the men's this time, with the Basketball team hoping to carry on the good work.
