Eagles swoop to victory in first match
Oscar Belham

Liventia (UPA) – Isselmere-Nieland passed its first international test with a solid 4-1 win over Krytak in the Baptism of Fire tournament in Bostopia and Liventia. The Eagles’ tepid first half performance gave way to a clinic in the second, with Cohen and Claesburgh peppering the opposition net with fourteen of Isselmere-Nieland’s twenty-three attempts on goal.

Potherington wasn’t impressed by his side’s display, however. For much of the first 30 minutes, he clenched his fists and barked orders at players and coaching staff alike as the Eagles’ stumbled towards what seemed a certain defeat. Miscommunication between keeper and centre-back had Felsingborin and mab-Costin glowering at one another as a weak back-pass let the Krytak striker through with a precise lob over the stranded keeper. The situation failed to improve as Krytak made the most of the dissension in the Isselmere-Nielandic ranks, dominating possession in midfield and efficiently pressurising the Eagles. Felsingborin and his back four weathered a storm of shots and corners, with two shots clattering off the posts, Felsingborin forced to make two spectacular saves, and Huang and mab-Costin each made goal-line clearances. A pasting seemed to beckon. Thorvaldsson collected a caution for a late boot on a Krytak winger in the 17th minute. Bogue joined him in the referee’s book 6 minutes later after a nasty lunge on an opposition striker that might have had the midfielder see red. Fortunately, both Krytak players escaped injury.

The manager had had enough. He substituted mab-Druist for Björnssund and Norton for Bogue and ordered a formation change to 4-3-3. Mab-Druist rewarded Potherington’s trust almost immediately, stealing the ball on his own 18 and driving forward to make a remarkable long-ball to Cohen that caught the Krytak defence completely off-guard. Surging forward, Cohen slipped past the befuddled defence and slotted a low, hard shot into the right corner of the net well out of the keeper’s reach. With that equaliser, the Eagles took flight.

The rejigged midfield forced the Krytak side back, albeit not without accruing a further caution for Dunston in the 42nd minute for a mistimed tackle in the centre circle. Isselmere-Nieland took the lead in the 45th minute when Cohen, having evaded his marker, powered in a well-struck corner from Arnásson into the top-left corner of the net.

After the break, the onslaught began. Cohen scorned a sitter that would have provided him a natural, perfect hattrick when he blasted a right-footed shot from 6 yards out high and wide of an open net. Likewise, mab-Druist struck the framework twice, finally scoring a ridiculous goal as his shot rebounded off the crossbar and the Krytak keeper’s head before tumbling into the net in the 67th minute. Claesburgh completed the route in the 89th minute with a belter from 30 yards that gave the Krytak keeper no chance.

Isselmere-Nieland’s recovery didn’t satisfy Potherington. Although he marshalled the team to thank the Eagles’ supporters, the manager refused to allow his players to talk with the press and confined his own post-match conference to brief, anodyne comments. Hopefully, his team-talk was more uplifting.

Next, Isselmere-Nieland face Midlauthia who battled P00t3r to a 2-2 draw. Midlauthia will be eager to secure the 3 points that were so nearly theirs on match-day 1, while Isselmere-Nieland will attempt to reproduce their second half performance for the full 90 minutes.

Krytak 1 - 4 Isselmere-Nieland
(Krytak 8') – (Cohen 34' + 45'; Mab Druist 67'; Claesburgh 89')
Bookings: Thorvaldsson (17'), Bogue (23'), Dunston (42)
Population: 13 billion and counting ... (18/10/09)

(OOC: Could we have roster linkage on the first (or another) post?)

PANTHERS OPEN WITH DRAW

The players out on the pitch wearing, well nothing, were honored to be out there. For so long they were told that they could never represent their country, a small chunk of land to the northwest of Secristan. They’ve watched the Secristanis participate and detested it. Once again, the rich and uppity tightwads were able to play an international sport while they could do nothing. The small government of Penthoria had attempted to join before, but were turned away by the President who informed the country that he did not want to support any international sporting competition that would be allow a country like Secristan to participate. After a change of heart, here they are and ready to play Delaclava. It was Delaclava’s first game as well in this 34th Baptism of Fire and they had to look across the field and wonder just what they were getting themselves into. Their first opponent was nude. Welcome to the world of international soccer, Delaclava. You will also be playing Bears, whatever Prux brings, and perhaps trees, or cavemen, and even Secristanis.

Prior to the opening whistle, Ruben Hester of Delaclava went up to the referee and pointed at our players as if wondering if he would allow us to play in the buff. The referee then approached captain Chris Martin, and as Chris told us, “He offered to postpone the start of the match for up to an hour so that we could get dressed. I told him that this is the way we play and he just stared at me like I was talking a strange language but then he was like very well, let’s play.” Penthoria played well as it seemed to take a little while for Delaclava to get used to the situation in which they were in. The one player on their team that did not seem phased by our lack of clothing was goalkeeper Graham Torres, who made several brillant saves in the first half. There was one he could not get to as a pretty passing play between Vinnie Richter and Matt Gordon set up Steve Johnson like a tic-tac-toe board and gave the Panthers the goal lead in the 37th. Penthoria actually had more shots on goal in the second half as they continued to carry the play, although Delaclava looked good later in the match. Mose Fuentes scored an equalizer in the 75th minute. Reportedly, Fuentes was returning from an injury for this match, so this was certainly an uplifting score for our opponents. The game ended 1-1, and the Penthorian media does agree with the Delaclavans that Graham Torres was the man of the match. Penthoria could have had several chances to extend their lead while it was still 1-0. It was his play, to keep it just a one goal deficit that enabled his team to be in the situation where they could tie it with just one goal, which they are able to do with fifteen minutes left. Penthoria will have their bye day now, and will spend it attending the game between The Babbage Islands and Valladares, even though our next opponent is Maciea. Since Maciea is playing Delaclava, the team feels it will be more beneficial to be at a game with two teams to scout, and not just one.

Fson 3 Lanceo 0

Fson got a comprehensive victory over Lanceo today in their fist match of the Baptism Of Fire Cup, Fsons Defensive Style payed off as they held the Lanceo attacks in the first 15 minutes, the first goal came just before half time Maksims Danilovs' cross finding Erling Knudtzon who nodded the ball just over Jakub, the Lanceo keeper.

At the begining of the second half the Lanceonans where on the attack again, twice hitting the woodwork, however the strong Fsonian defense held off these attacks and countered attacked. This time Artyom Bludnov's strike from the edge of the box sailed into the top left corner sending all 10000 Fson fans into a frenzy.

Image

In the 85th Minute island league strike David Magowan came off the bench and scored his first international goal from Sigumond Paysden's Corner.

All in all a comprehensive victory and a good platform from which to start the tournament.

Host announcement
It appears I left Neumandia on my original list of confirmed entrants for the BoF (see WC signup thread) and removed Nationstates 4 by accident; while Neumandia were removed prior to the draw, Nationstates 4 were not reinstated. They've now been put into Group E and their MD1 score will be scorinated today. Group E now contains six nations; Groups A through D still contain five.

The Sargossa v Nationstates 4 Matchday 1 fixture will be scorinated shortly. Qualification is slightly affected; now the best third placed teams out of Groups A through D, as well as out of Groups E through G, qualify.

Matchday One, Group E, with updated table
Sargossa 1-0 Nationstates IV

Code: Select all

The Island Chronicle

Bye Bye Bye-Day

Why is it that when you’ve got a relaxing day off planned something unexpected pops up to ruin it? After a leisurely day involving a spot of light training at their Liventia training camp, much lounging around, a healthy meal, flicking between the Vaarshire/Queer Poco and Parthenon/al-Merika group games, another healthy meal and more lounging around an urgent call reached the Corsairs management, another team had mysteriously turned up. And Sargossa had to play them. Right now! Well not quite right now as the coaching staff had to trawl through the hotel, the bar mainly, and various over amenities around and about to gather together the squad for a match no-one knew they had to play.

Long after this very publication’s opening day Baptism of Fire coverage had gone to print and hours following the two other Group E fixtures, at approaching 10:30pm local time, Sargossa kicked off their historic first ever senior international match. Their opposition, an unknown squad from an unknown nation with the ridiculous name of Nationstates 4. Hardly inspiring stuff now is it? They couldn’t even be bothered to make it sound that little more refined and stick the 4 in roman numerals. It was hardly the glorious debut everyone had been expecting. In the middle of the night, against an unknown opponent and in a mostly empty stadium, although in fairness the organisers did let spectators in for free, the nation got its first taste of international football. And given the somewhat strange circumstances it’s hardly surprising that this one won’t exactly go down in BoF lore as a classic.

But with their first game the Corsairs did register their first win and in these tournaments the performances are very much secondary to the result. The actual game, between two sides looking distinctly unprepared for action, was so dire as to not really be worth mentioning. The crucial fact to relate is that Batista was up-ended in the penalty area by an oh-so clumsy challenge and it was Ciudad Soluca’s Fariás who stepped up to score the only goal of the game from the spot.

Sargossa 1 – 0 Nationstates 4
Fariás (p) 37

So there you have it. Rather than being on 0 points from 0 games Sargossa is 3 from 1, albeit having beaten a side that will surely end up bottom of this group. Tired players and staff trouped back to the hotel knowing they could now get back to preparing for a much tougher challenge against al-Merika.

THE VAARSHIRE TIMES

FIRST BAPTISM OF FIRE GAME RESULTS IN TIE
Vaarshire 1, Queer Poco el Mono Ara 1

LIVENTIA- While Vaar football fans have been watching the World Cup- and it's preliminary tournament, the Baptism of Fire- for years this is the first time that a team from Vaarshire has participated. Matthew de Keizer, widely seen as the best goalkeeper to come out of Jan Ten Eyck University, and the man who coached the Noordendam United team that won three consecutive Prince Henri Cups, led the Vaarshire national team. Vaarshire, placed in Group E, was first matched against Queer Poco el Mono Ara. As with many teams in the Baptism of Fire, De Keizer's team played a defensive game. However, so too did Queer Poco el Mono Ara; the stunning defenses of both teams resulted in a scoreless first half.

During halftime, striker Ryan Xavier, #15, twisted his ankle and was pulled out of the game, with Valentine Naaktgeboren, #19, who has the distinction of being named both Prince Henri Cup MVP and Vaarshire's Most Eligible Bachelor last year. This turned out to be a good thing, as Naaktgeboren scored a goal two minutes into the half, the ball barely missing the ear of goalkeeper Petr Ollic. Normally either emotionless or rather angry, the face of Coach De Keizer- who is known to live up to his name at times- is said to have cracked at least a small smile at this.

Not to be outdone, Queer Poco came right back and made a goal within five minutes. Barging his way through Vaarshire's defenders, Ishmael van Dyke- apparently of at least distant Dutch origin- got the ball in with vengeance. However, after this momentary lapse, both teams upped their defense, after Coach De Keizer apparently screamed the word at the team so loud, it drowned out the spectators shouting the same thing in the stands. "What he said!" One fan was said to shout afterwards. The remaining minutes of the half were marked by three near-misses by Queer Poco within five minutes, and Valentine Naaktgeboren's shirt somehow mysteriously ripping off after he was fouled by Queer Poco striker Alberto Xisco, who was given a yellow card. Vaarshire very nearly made a goal with thirty seconds left in play, if not for Queer Poco goalkeeper Petr Ollic's long reach. Thanks to two iron defenses, Vaarshire's first game in the World Cup series ended without a win, but at least without a loss.

Euro Trash Football Update:

We now have breaking news following the game between Euro-Trash and Zerdonian in the Baptism Of Fire. It seems that during the 63rd minute of play, Cystennin Ethelbert obtained possesion of the ball about half-way up the pitch following a quick passing of the ball to Delbert Royston. He took the ball past several defensive men to score on the opposing goal keeper in a one-on-one situation. The Final Score of the game was 1-0 with our great Mohawks comingm out on top. Our great keeper, Ralph Alwyn also was able to deflect 13 shot upon goal. Here our lovely technical crew will display the stats of the match for the Euro-Trash team:

Goals: 1

Shots On Target: 6

Possesion Time: 53%

Injuries: None

Substitutions: Ned Prosper/Pstphen Bailey

Yellow Cards: 2 (Norris Seward/ Mitchell Lester) (Norris: Illegal Pushing/ Mitchell: Illegal Slide Tackling)

Red Cards: 1 (Roger Bridger) (Slide-Tackling Illegaly x2)

Good news, bad news as Valipac prepares to play Unreal
Image
Expect a big game from youngster Nicholas Fitzgerald (shown in his club's kit)

Match day two is over, and with it, Valipac now knows where it truly stands. Leading the group is the unlikely squad from LeDoucheland, fresh off a one nil win against Unreal to place them at one win and one draw. Unreal is tied for second in the group at one win and one loss. Watch out for the squad from South Wienda. They came off their first week bye to beat the team from Drie-Bene one nil, and are tied for second. Since they have already had their bye, they are in a good position to take command of the group early on. That leaves Valipac in next to last, although the bye accounts for a lot of that, and Drie-Bene in last at no wins and two losses. With Drie-Bene scheduled for a bye next match day, one thing is certain: their choke hold on the cellar will remain tight for at least another match day. With Valipac scheduled to play Unreal, nothing too big will be changed, but the winner is guaranteed of moving into second place. LeDoucheland will play South Wienda, and the outcome of the game could change a lot of things for Valipac.

With a South Wienda win and a Valipac loss, Valipac will remain in fourth. The road would be extremely tough, but qualification would still be possible. With a LeDoucheland win and a Valipac loss, Valipac would also remain in fourth. This scenario, however, would make it much easier to qualify, although it would still depend heavily on South Wienda's game against Unreal. With a South Wienda win and a Valipac draw, Valipac would need an Unreal loss versus South Wienda and a LeDoucheland loss to Drie-Bene to possibly qualify. With a LeDoucheland win and a Valipac draw, Valipac would move to third. They would need an Unreal loss to South Wienda to clinch second, but a LeDoucheland loss to Drie-Bene would allow Valipac to win the group. With a South Wienda win and a Valipac win, Valipac would move to second after South Wienda. The teams will then play later for essential control of the group. With a LeDoucheland victory and a Valipac win, Valipac would need external help to knock off LeDoucheland to win the group (although they could win based on goal differential), but they would be on pace to easily advance.

An interesting plot line has begun to develop, as young striker Nicholas Fitzgerald has promised to wear a bracelet with the saying "Myr shegin dy ve, bee eh", which roughly translates to "What must be, will be", imprinted upon it. The wristband is an attempt to publicize the cause for a home ruled - but still Valipacian - Manx state, the island being where Fitzgerald was born and raised. Fitzgerald is a firm believer in the cause, and has spoken publicly about it on several occassions. When he announced he would be wearing the wristband, he answered a few more questions about the cause. "This is not about independence," he stated. "We simply want our own parliament. We will continue to be part of the Commonwealth, however, we wish to be granted our own ruling body that can better enact laws that reflect our constituency." The movement has picked up speed over the recent years, but is still most likely years from coming into fruition, if it ever does. Fitzgerald's actions, however, show the growing traction the move is gaining. At the end of his press conference, he announced that his next game would be dedicated "to the people of Manx", and that they should expect great things from him.

Erlings Wonder Goal Not Enough:

FSON 2-ELESDEE 2

Image

Fson have drawn their second game of the BOF tournament and drew in style, Elesdee is a team of which little is known about they played with a style very similar to Fson and the game was very phisycal with the game staying mainly in the middle of the park.

The Team is still playing in the nations kit, from before the flag change but this didnt effect the fans tenacity 12,500 turned up for this game and have formed what is now being called as the blue and red army.

The first goal came 30 minutes in, with Erling Knudtzon scoring a superbly struck volley which left the keeper with no chance. The Elesdee side battled back though with a strong defense and a cutting attack straight down the middle they scored after the end of the first half 55 minutes in. On the 65th minute Stefano Conti and Muir Du Baught Replaced Boriss Bogdaškins and Maksims Danilovs respectivley. Elesdee scored on the 80 minute mark, which looked like the end for Fson, Stefano Conti fouling the Elesdee striker in the box giving a penalty earned him a yellow, Luckily for Fson the penalty was saved and on the 86th minute Muir Du Baught grabbed an equiliser from Sigumond Paysden's Corner. Setting the Blue and Red army off. After the game both teams shook hands and the Red and Blue army got an applause from the Fsonian players.

Two Matches, Two Draws, Two Points

It was a tough pill to swallow today in Liventia, as the Aggies grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the third minute and held, only to surrender it two minutes into stoppage time as Owen Claesburgh broke the hearts of the Aggies with his second goal in as many matches, both coming after 89 minutes. Confidence abounded after a strong second half showing against P00t3r, and both the team and the fans were expecting a win today against Isselmere-Nieland on matchday two of the Baptism of Fire.

The Aggies were short Joe Ben-Watson, dealt a red in match day one, who was replaced by Thomas Andretz at right back. There were no other changes in the Aggie line up as the game kicked off, and the Aggies put immediate pressure on the Nielander defense. Andreas Brodin unleashed a quick shot 2 minutes in on keeper Adalbjart Felsingborin, who had little trouble punching it over but the heat was on. A superbly bent in Jewnínho corner found a breaking Tom Zeigler at the back right post, Felsingborin denied the header with a tremendous diving save but was not able to clear the ball, and Daniel Evans was there for the easy punch in.

The 40,000 Aggie fans in attendance were ecstatic, but there would be little left in the match to cheer for. Play stayed at midfield for much of the rest of the contest as possession was also well balanced, 51% to 49% in favor of Isselmere-Nieland. A few fireworks displayed in the sixtieth minute characterized the extremely physical and hard fought nature of the match as Eric Bennett and Magnus Björnssund both received yellow cards for a shoving match following a hard tackle from Bennett that was not ruled foul.

The dagger came two minutes into a total of three minutes of stoppage, there looked to be no trouble on as Will Merritt had the call earlier on HavenSport

This could be the last hurrah of the match for Nieland. Bogue... across the field to Arnásson, looks into the box, cross in and headed out by Bennett. Björnssund gathers it, Nieland getting desperate now, Björnssund fires a long cross in, Claesburgh is the only Nielander in the box, somehow he's gotten it of his chest, defended by Bennett and now Heijtinga coming over to help, nifty sidestep by Claesburgh, off balance shot and Nieland have tied it! Off the left foot of Owen Claesburgh, he beat Pander to the top left corner, what a shocker. Victory seemed in the grasp of the Aggies, but Claesburgh, who scored in the 89th minute yesterday, has put in his second goal of the Baptism of Fire to tie Midlauthia 1-1. Heartbreaking really...

And there you have it, Aggies tie Isslemere-Nieland 1-1 and remain in the middle of group G.

THE VAARSHIRE TIMES
Vaarshire's #1 English Newspaper

VAARSHIRE NAILS NATIONSTATES 4, LEADS IN GROUP E
Vaarshire 2, Nationstates Four 1

LIVENTIA- Vaarshire has won for the first time in the World Cup series, and has risen to the top of Group E, after defeating the team from the oddly-named nation Nationstates 4. Nationstates 4, which was a late entry in the Baptism of Fire- so late, they played their first game at midnight- neglected to publish an official roster, and their kits did not display names or numbers. Overall, a very strange team, indeed.

Nationstates 4 scored first, in the fourteenth minute of play. The announcer was confused as to what to call the man who scored the goal; he was referred to as "the striker with curly hair". Thirty minutes later- 44 minutes into the game- Vaarshire tied it up, thanks to eccentric striker Sebastian de Groot- whose number is 98, "just to be different", as he said when he was announced to be on the team. De Groot, at 2.1 meters tall, was the tallest man on the team, and definitely lives up to his name. Coach De Keizer said of De Groot "Sometimes, he can even intimidate me."

After halftime, it was particularly sunny, with the sun in the eyes of Nationstates 4's defenders. While fan favorite Valentine Naaktgeboren, still in for injured Ryan Xavier, attempted twice to get the ball in the goal, it was Piet Jones, #10, who finally made Vaarshire's second goal, seventy-six minutes into the game. Only three minutes later, Jones recieved a yellow card for shoving one of Nationstates 4's strikers. The Red-and-Orange were sure to keep their defense up for the remainder of the game, and it paid off. Nationstates 4 did not even get close to the goal for the remaining eleven minutes. With the second game down, the Vaar team now prepares to go against the Parthenese team, who is ranked 4th in Group E.

The Island Chronicle

al-Square

While the various media outlets present all around Liventia and Bostopia quite rightly focus on the immediate futures of their own nations neutral observers could well be turning an eye on Group E in the knowledge that, even at this early stage, it’s shaping up to be an all out battle for those two certain and one potential places in the last sixteen between five nations with not an awful lot separating them. And boy was that a long sentence. Oh the faintly ridiculous Nationstates 4 are in the mix too but should only serve to supply the other sides with three points apiece, as they have done twice already.

Those with memories stretching right back to matchday 1 might recall it was the Corsairs who were the first grateful recipients of Foursian (or whatever) generosity in a match played in very strange circumstances, in an empty stadium in the middle of the night. Everyone knew the second outing, against al-Merika would be a much, much tougher affair. And what do you know? Everyone turned out to be right.

It was an opening of punch and counter punch as both sides probed each other (in the cleanest possible sense you understand) looking for a weakness. Against a side the Sargossan media had tipped as one to look out for the Corsairs were finding it particularly hard going. But then out of nothing the Rams, as they’ve been christened (although not exactly christened for obvious reasons) by many of their fans, blinked first. It was a simple slip from fallback Zartosht Musa that allowed Ernesto Fariás to run clear down the left. Hamir Hussain came across to snuff out the danger but with a drop of the shoulder Fariás was past him and drilled a shot low and hard into the bottom corner of Konduz’s net.

Half time came and went and although leading the Sargossans seemed to be lacking inspiration. If plan A failed then there didn’t seem to be a plan B or C. And that’s just what they needed when on fifty nine minutes al-Merika captain Ardalan Hassan stole in between González and Royo, controlled to ball expertly on his chest and placed it quite beautifully past Tejera. All square and then came the realisation that coach Christian Salazar might be a touch out of his depth as although faces changed as he made his substitutions the style of play stayed exactly the same. And now the Rams looked totally unfazed by it. The minutes ticked by and al-Merika sensed a winner and but for the agility of Tejera they would have had one. The final whistle was met by no little relief on the Sargossan bench.

Sargossa 1 – 1 al-Merika
Fariás (18)

With Vaarshire knocking over Nationstates 4 in their second match and Queer Poco getting their first win, against the group’s early leaders Parthenon there's certanly little room for error. All of which leave the Vaar, the Poconese and Sargossa level at the top of Group E on 4 points with Parthenon a point further back. And with the Corsairs set to take on Queer Poco el Mono Ara next it’s sure not getting any easier.

Bears Play to a More Exciting 2-2 Draw
by Anders Alfven

BOSTOPIA(TP) - Once again, the Bears played their Baptism of Fire group stage match to another draw, this time a more fan-friendly affair, drawing 2-2 with Zerdonian.

All four goals came in the first hour of play, with the final 30 minutes having both sides getting a few quality chances to get a go ahead goal. Strong goalkeeping from both teams, and a few passes and shots going astray prevented this match from getting a winner, but both managers have something to be encouraged about.

'I felt that the draw was well deserved,' said Toyur manager Erik Larsson. 'Both of our goals came from some good buildup play, and I felt that while we wouldn't normally concede one of those goals that went in on us, Anders [Eriksson, goalkeeper] stopped one at the end that would've likely gone in on another day, so it evens out.'

Zerdonian started the scoring in the 14th minute, with a cross from an unnamed midfielder meeting the head of an unnamed forward, after some poor marking in the middle of the Toyur defence. Some slight miscommunication between Källström and Norström meant that neither player lept up to meet the ball, leaving Anders Eriksson helpless in the goal.

The Bears drew level with a 22nd minute strike, for their first goal of the tournament. Some good passing between Lilja, Tillström, and Olsen led to a low cross through the danger area, with Viktor Eklund getting a boot on it, directing it into the goal. They increased their lead in the 47th minute of the 2nd half, with a corner from Peter Modin being cleared to the outside of the box by a Zerdonian defender, only for Kristian Olsen to hammer the ball home from 20 yards.

Zerdonian tied the game once again in the 58th minute, with a strong counter attack upfield, leaving a forward unmarked to side-foot the ball into the net inside the box. The goal scoring ended here, but the chances did not, as Magnus Gustavsson hit the bar for the Bears, while a curving free kick from Zerdonian just outside the box was just tipped around the post by Eriksson's outstretched fingers. The game ended with a 2-2 draw, and Toyur in 3rd place in the group with 2 points, still in a qualifying spot. A win may be required to go through, though, and a win over co-group leaders Euro-Trash, having just come off a bye, may be a good enough boost for the team to move on.

'Our next one will be tough,' Larsson said when asked about his next opponents. 'They play a very similar style to us, and we know that we are better defensively than allowing 2 goals like this against opposition in our skill range. I expect that both teams will be hard to break down, but we have some offensive punch to add should things be going well for us in the back. Hopefully we can grab our first win and move up the table.'

The showdown with Euro-Trash can be caught on TSTV2.

DELACLAVA STAR

Delaclava 2 - Maciea 1

Once again, in fashion true to their history, Delaclava came from behind to win. Despite a Maciea goal early on, goalkeeper Graham Torres turned on a fantastic appearance for the rest of the game, and co-captains Stanley Ichtyelkov and Calvin Pope each scored goals.

Devin Santana fouled the Maciea forward in the box in the 7th minute, and they made the penalty kick. In the 47th, Stanley Ichtyelkov took a cross from Calvin Castillo to score. In the 84th, Calvin Pope ran through the middle on what seemed like an errant Mose Fuentes pass to clinch a win.

Delaclava's next game will be against Babbage Islands.

Maciea 1 0 - 1
Delaclava 0 2 - 2

MAN OF THE MATCH: Calvin Pope, D, Delaclava. He was a defensive force and a leader all game, and his game-winner was a great touch.

1st Half - MAC, (penalty kick) 7th.
2nd Half- DEL, Stanley Ichtyelkov (Calvin Castillo, Geraldo Ayala) 47th. DEL, Calvin Pope (Mose Fuentes, John Ewing) 84th.

SHOTS - MAC 7-8-15, on goal 5-6-11. DEL 4-9-13, on goal 2-8-10. SAVES - MAC, 2-6-8. DEL, Torres 4-6-10.

Eagles stumble to a draw
Oscar Belham

Liventia (UPA) - Despite Potherington's protestations his side would match its second-half performance against Krytak, the Eagles came crashing to earth conceding another woeful early goal to a powerful and determined Midlauthian side. The Aggies pressed forward from the start forcing Felsingborgin time and again to save the Isselmere-Nielanders from themselves. The Midlauthian strike force of Brodin, Jewnínho, Ziegler, and Evans eviscerated the lax defence only to be thwarted by Felsingborgin.

The Eagles' keeper had no chance to save the eventual Midlauthian goal. In the second minute, Andreas Brodin struck a belter from the edge of the eighteen with a insouciant swerve that Felsingborgin did well to punch out for a corner taken by Jewnínho. The Midlauthian striker took it beautifully, swinging the ball in to find Tom Ziegler who dashed into open space to make a powerful header only to be thwarted by another superb Felsingborgin save. Unfortunately, the Eagles' keeper could not hold on to the ball and Daniel Evans capitalised on the lethargy of Isselmere-Nieland's defence. As the Aggies celebrated, both Potherington and Felsingborgin had had enough.

Felsingborgin tore into Thorvaldsson and Morrison, who were marking Ziegler and Evans, respectively, before barracking mab Costin. All three defenders had been guilty of poor play to that point, content to observe the hard work of their keeper and Huang, who was at least able to shut down attacks on his flank. Potherington subbed in Stewart for Thorvaldsson and mab Wercus for Morrison, glowering at the pair as they slunk off the pitch.

With the back four shored up, Isselmere-Nieland looked a proper side, but one that could not break into the final third. The Aggies managed to close down what few passes the Eagles cobbled together, leaving the midfield a no-man's-land for Isselmere-Nielandic hopes. While Midlauthian tactics weren't exactly a course in catenaccio, they were effective.

Isselmere-Nieland's supporters attempted to drive their side on, but as the battle in the centre of the park soldiered on, even they began to lose their voice, only to briefly regain it on the hour mark. Eric Bennett clattered into Magnus Björnssund, leading to a bit of handbags that earned both cautions. Replays of the incident showed that Bennett indeed got the ball before the man, but he caught a fair amount of both in the end.

The Eagles seemed doomed to suffer their first international defeat when Claesburgh scored two minutes into stoppage time for his second of the competition. The Isselmere-Nielanders had finally managed to make a concerted break into the final third, only to be rebuffed by a stalwart Midlauthian defence. With just over a minute to go in stoppage time, Björnssund crossed the ball into the box where Claesburgh controlled it beautifully, finessed his way past Bennett and with his weaker left fired the ball into the top left corner just beyond Pander's reach; a superb finish to an otherwise tepid night.

After the game, Potherington praised his keeper and Claesburgh for their professionalism and to the team's supporters who celebrated the draw as if it was a victory.

The Eagles face Aeukera next, who are presently at the bottom of Group G.

DELACLAVA STAR

Delaclava 2 - Babbage Islands 2

Magnus Svoboda scored two goals, but Jamal Pacheco and John Ewing countered with their first international goals to bring Delaclava to a 2-2 tie with Babbage Islands.

Svoboda took a pass from Erik Hebbeler and split the defense, found a corner and put it past Torres. But as usual, Delaclava came back, with Jamal Pacheco running through to a Mose Fuentes pass and striking the ball past a helpless Averill Robinson.

Svoboda struck back, though, this time heading a Tony Martin pass out of the air and into the corner. Delaclava was not fazed, however, as John Ewing shot from 25 yards out. He found the far side, and the ball glanced off the inside of the post and in.

Delaclava will next face Valladares.

Babbage Islands 1 1 - 2
Delaclava 0 2 - 2

MAN OF THE MATCH - Magnus Svoboda, F, Babbage Islands. Not many opponents have been able to beat Graham Torres, but Svoboda confused Torres and the rest of the Delaclava defense the entire day. His playmaking for shots was remarkable, and the only two shots he took both went into the net.

1st Half - BI, Magnus Svoboda (Erik Hebbeler, Pierre Rouleau) 9th.
2nd Half - DEL, Jamal Pacheco (Mose Fuentes, Stanley Ichtyelkov) 50th. BI, Magnus Svoboda (Tony Martin) 63rd. DEL, John Ewing (Jamal Pacheco) 73rd.

SHOTS - BI 9-8-17, on goal 7-7-14. DEL 6-8-14, on goal 5-6-11.
SAVES - BI, Robinson 5-4-9. DEL, Torres 6-6-12.

LINEUPS - BI, Averill Robinson; Wilhelm Freudigmann, Gunther Bauer, Bill Hope; Issac Buffington, Pierre Rouleau, Chang Weigu, Art Kelly (Roger Doss 78th); Erik Hebbeler (Qiao Zhibang 78th), Tony Martin, Magnus Svoboda. DEL, Graham Torres; Jim Molina, Calvin Pope, Devin Santana; David Ward, Jamal Pacheco, John Ewing, Mose Fuentes; Stanley Ichtyelkov, Geraldo Ayala, Calvin Castillo.

After a disappointing 3-0 loss vs Fson in their opener, the Lancish roared back to crush Elesdee 3-0. GK Jakub was superb, stopping five shots, and the Lancish offense attacked ferociously all day long. In the twenty first minute, Forward LD made a superb move as he dribbled through the legs of an opposing defender and banged home the first goal of the game. LD then scored in the 55th minute with a rocket from 45 yards out. Khaki G. wrapped up the scoring in the 78th minute with a 2 yard header. The Lancish are ready to go in their next game.

FORT BOSTON, Bostopia (BPA) -- With four points from two games, The Babbage Islands are well-placed in group play in the international Baptism of Fire soccer tournament.

Captain Magnus Svoboda (Dover City) has played brilliantly for the Islanders at forward. He notched a goal and an assist in the 3-0 first-round win over Valladares, followed by both team goals in today's 2-2 draw with Group C leaders Delaclava. Forward Tony Martin (FC Green Star) and midfielder Pierre Rouleau (Parisian) nabbed the other team goals against Valladares.

Averill Robinson's (West Scoville Tigers) bid for a second clean sheet was thwarted by two second-half goals, with Delaclava's Jamil Pacheco figuring in both. Pacheco scored in the 50th minute to equalise at 1-1, and set up John Ewing's 73rd-minute strike scoring off the far post to level the score at 2-2.

The upcoming third game is a critical matchup with Penthoria, also at four points in group play. A fourth game with Maciea, on three points, will round out the calendar in a very closely-contested group.

On the social front, Charleston FC reserve players Carl Rolando and Jimmy Thornton continue to delight hangers-on with their nightly clubbing. So far no official notice has been taken of their activities.

Valipac Drubs Unreal 2-0
Image
Fitzgerald (shown in club kits) scored twice after promising a big game

Any doubts about Valipac's ability to win games in the Baptism of Fire is now gone. With a thoroughly one sided match between Valipac and Unreal, Valipac moved into second place in Group D, trailing only LeDoucheland, who they drew in Matchday one. Valipac really dominated the pitch today, controlling possession for a shocking sixty-three percent of the game. They out-shot Unreal by a margin of sixteen to four, and ended up with five good shots on goal. Fitzgerald, after promising a big game in remembrance of his kinsmen in Manx, delivered, scoring both goals for the Valipacian squad and nearly connecting again for the hat trick. This brings his team-leading tally up to an amazing three goals in only two games so far this Baptism of Fire.

Valipac looked to go in front early with a strong forward push late in the ninth minute. The resulting surge led to a corner, which King struck resolutely into the box. Zachary Watts was there to head the ball on goal, but Vương, the keeper for Unreal, made a fantastic leaping effort to push the shot just over the crossbar. Another corner was thrown into the box, but this time Triệu stepped in the way and cleared the ball for Unreal. Valipac pushed forward again in the fifteenth minute, but a long effort at goal from Freddie Cross curved just wide, drawing a number of gasps from the fans.

In the twenty-first minute, Unreal looked to take their first real offensive of the game when Alexander Marsden made a brutal tackle on Quách. Marsden was immediately booked, and was lucky to not receive a red card. The indirect free kick for Unreal was won by Valipac, however, and the chance was over. Shortly afterwards, Marsden committed another foul and narrowly escaped receiving his second yellow card of the match. As a result, manager Terry Scott decided to relieve him of his duties and ordered Isaac Burton to take his place. The move would prove rewarding later on, although Scott was surely displeased at having to replace his starting midfielder only thirty-five minutes into the game.

In the thirty-eighth minute, Unreal lost possession to the Valipacian back line. Charles Stone kicked it forward as far as he could, and somehow Fitzgerald managed to avoid an offside and still track down the ball. In the clear, he easily put the touch on the ball required to send it spinning to the back of the net. Valipac led, one-nil. The rest of the half was rather uneventful, with possession being switched between the two teams mainly in the midfield area. Unreal did a good job of reading the Valipacian players and intercepting their passes, but the sheer numbers Valipac had in the midfield usually procured the ball back to their side.

When Valipac took the field to start the second half, Manager Terry Scott had replaced Aidan Wyatt with Mohammad Baker. This was Baker's first appearance of the tournament, and it was a sound move by Scott to rest Wyatt for the upcoming game against South Wiedna. Moving the ball well, Valipac took and held possession for much of the second half. In the fifty-second minute, Fitzgerald was charging into the box with the ball and shot on goal. Trương held up an arm and deflected the shot, and as a result Fitzgerald was awarded a penalty kick. Afterwards, Fitzgerald said that he "just tried to concentrate on putting the ball just inside the upper right corner of the goal." It worked. Although the goalie guessed correctly, Fitzgerald placed the ball just past his outstretched hands and into the back of the net. Fitzgerald collapsed on the field and his teams piled on top of him. When he got up, tears were visible in his eyes. Later, he said that he was "so proud that he was able to deliver upon his promise" and that he was happy he could "play so well in a game [he] dedicated to Manx."

After the second goal, Scott realized the game was effectively out of reach, and used his final substitution to replace Fitzgerald with Lawrence Hart. Fitzgerald walked off the pitch to a warm ovation by the fans, and he acknowledged them gratefully. He had the rest of the game to rest his legs, instead of tiring himself out before the next match. Whether the phenom will score against South Wienda is unknown, however, he will be a force against the team that allowed two LeDoucheland goals in their loss today. The rest of the match between Unreal and Valipac was relatively bland, and consisted of Valipac passing the ball amongst themselves in what almost seemed to be a game of playground keep-away. By the 90th minute, the Unreal players were worn out from chasing the ball, while Valipac's players still felt lively. Today, the first ever international win, was a big game for Valipac, and they walked away in style. They appear to be a real force heading into the latter half of group play.
