Next ATP Tournament to Start - a Preview

After the wildly successful Electrum International held in Hamilton, the tennis community's eyes will be on Rarungan as the Denari Challenges begin to start. This is a small tournament with competitors set to use this tournament as a warm up for the Jexxus Open, which we hear will be happening very soon. In the meantime, this tournament will be excellent preparation for Sonya Gredello who is competing in both the singles and doubles event. Joining her will be Rosa Levinsky, the second half of the world number 1 doubles team and Malcolm Press who will be competing in the doubles.

The seedings have conferred Rosa Levinsky and Sonya Gredello a significant advantage, with them being given a first-round bye into the second round after an extra pair was accidentally entered into the competition. Their opponent will be the winner of Kinnear/Thompson and Ache/Bass, pairs which are relatively unknown in the world stage. Nonetheless, Levinsky and Gredello have stated that they will in fact be watching this match from the grandstands, so they can get a feel on how their opponents will play. Levinsky and Gredello are very good up close on the net, always utilizing the doubles lane to the full advantage, so we predict that it will be very tough for them to be beaten in the doubles tournament.

On the singles side of the draw, Sonya Gredello, the number 1 player for Electrum has drawn Barclay Hext of Orennana. Again, another unknown player, but this time Sonya Gredello will probably be worn out from playing both singles and doubles in the tournament, and that might not go in her favour. After Hext, her next mission will be most probably Amancia Raimundo Belo of Costa De Ouro. Belo is fourth in the world after coming in second place in the Cenian Open. He will be a tough person to crack with his quick serves and his serve and volley style. He will be a dangerous opponent, and in the past, has been able to defeat both Navsal and de Surmar.

Malcolm Press meanwhile, who plays similarly to Belo (with a quick serve, but preferring to stay behind the base line) will go against Lewis Diver of Darvale. Diver, who last played in the King Pedro Clay Court Championships, has not been seen in a long time, but has only two wins and one loss to his name. We think that this will be an extremely tight match with both of them having different styles of play, but we have our hopes that Press will win in three sets.

Denari Challenges

Singles-

Peter P Larry #8

Peter P Larry, former World Number 3 (for 2 days), is trying to get the points to be World Number one as he dropped a few rankings between the period between The March Open and The 2nd Cenian Open. Though, Peter P Larry is back and he is ready to battle his rivals. Firstly, he will be playing Hannah Timberlake (ORN) a 25 seed. If he wins, he will then play either fellow Britonish Lance Mance or Giullo Fabbri (LVZ). This will be a very interesting match, though we think Peter will go through this quite easily. If he then plays Lance, it could be a big battle. I do not think the tournament was organised well.

Lance Mance #9

Lance Mance, World Number 9, is also trying to get in the top 5 to secure his place for The World Tour Finals. He has not done much this year. He played better in 2013, but now he is getting older and slower. He still has it in him though. He will be playing Giullo Fabbri (LVZ) which will be quite a battle, though we do believe that Lance Mance could win this quite easily and hopefully play Peter in the next round. We have to wait and see. Guillo Fabbri is playing here as a world number 24, is he really world number 24?

Doubles-

Peter P Larry/Lance Mance #14

Whether they play each other next round or they lose, the will be uniting to play the elite team from Costa de Ouro, Aline and Romao. One of them are the world number one. So this is a very dangerous match. This will be the battle of the titans. They will be playing them one day after they play the first match which is also organised badly. We hope that this is the best of 3 matches because these players will be to tried to play. We just have to wait until tomorrow comes.

LLAMANEANS SUIT UP FOR DENARI CHALLENGES
-Timothy Tobëre, lead contributor

After Dustin Willinger dropped out of the world top-ten, it appeared that Llamanean tennis was absolutely done for, ceding its small spot to the three-headed hegemony of Ceni, Costa de Ouro, and Anditia. Despite Willinger's slight injuries causing this drop, which, he warned, would not happen again, and the twenty-two-year-old Reagan Harris joining the ranks of the top fifteen, this sentient was echoed throughout the annals of sports blogs worldwide.

Now, the minor-but-not-that-minor Denari Challenges seem to be a turning point. Will Reagan and Dustin outperform their ways into a top-four spot, reviving the Llamanean tennis power that's been in place ever since Willinger debuted at the ATP? Or will a few bad breaks lead to the dissolution of Super-Llamaland in tennis - forever?

Image

Reagan Harris is a rising power. At the tender age of twenty-two, Harris battled through Ro16s and quarterfinals, never reaching any permanent, upper-echelon success, but with a shiny, dangerous number-thirteen ranking and not too much competition around, Reagan is ready for this tournament. With her number-seven intratournament ranking, she has an outside shot at the semifinals, but first she'll need to defeat Juan Collosio. Granted, the unranked player from the Western European Republic shouldn't prove too much of a challenge, but Reagan's driving net play and knockout serve will need to be clicking for her to move on against Collosio's strong backhand.

Image

Dustin Willinger, on the other hand, needs this tournament to ensure he goes out with a bang. The thirty-three year old's days of top-five rankings and shiny advertisements are nearly over with a wife and child on the way, and a win would be what we'd remember the man by. Edu Brayle of New North Aqmuland should pose a strong threat, though.

Day 1 Coverage

Electrum has had a good day at the Denari Challenges held in the beautiful nation of Rarungan. Both singles matches saw Electrum winning and advancing to the second round of the singles tournament.

In the morning match, Electrum's Sonya Gredello went against Barclay Hext. She blazed through Hext 6-1 6-4, winning in one and a half hours. The first set saw her completely dominate a flustered Hext who performed a lot of unforced errors as well as committing a few double faults on his serve. Barclay struggled with his backhand, so Gredello went to work, making him play the extra ball or making him use his dreaded backhand. In thirty minutes, she made quick work on Barclay. The second set however was much more close, with Gredello and Hext both trading games on their services. It was fairly even with Gredello unable to exploit Hext's weaknesses in the first set. But once again, it was 4-4 and Gredello managed to break Hext to steal a 5-4 lead. She ended the match with a service to boot, 6-4 in the final set.

Electrum's afternoon match saw Malcolm Press go against Lewis Diver of Darvale. As expected, Press managed to defeat Diver 7-6 6-4. The match proved to be a tight affair with a set tiebreak separating Press in the first set, and a decisive break early in the second set saw Press hold onto victory. The first set saw Diver manage an early lead with a break because of Press's erratic serving, having a 30% first serve in rate. This was because of his lame leg and soon after timeout was called to massage his leg. Whatever that masseuse did worked charms with him improving very quickly to break back. This time, Press would be the one to break Diver, seizing the lead 6-5, but once again in the set, he could not capitalise, with Diver breaking back to tie it up six games all. A tiebreak was in order, and after a few close calls, including a ball which just landed on the other side of the net, saw Press win the tiebreak 4-7. The next set was similar with Press gaining an early break, but this time able to just hang on. Press's forehand has really improved since his last tournament, and we expect better things from Press in the future.

Speaking of the future, tomorrow will see the start of the doubles tournament. Sonya Gredello and Rosa Levinsky, by virtue of being the top ranked team in the doubles tour, will be the only team having a bye. They will be looking closely at the other doubles match of Greg Kinnear/Joseph Thompson vs Irwin Bass/Alex Ache to weigh their competition up. Meanwhile, Sonya Gredello will also be playing against Moswike Guyende of New North Amquland, after defeating Belo in an early upset. Press will be going up against his toughest mission yet, top seed Romao of Costa De Ouro. These two players who have a similar playing style will surely offer a cracker of a match and should not be missed. Tune in next time to watch Day 2 of the Denari Challenges.

Al Montis de Surmar fights for a higher ranking in the Tennis World
Greg Frotmann -- Anditon Free Press

Al Montis de Surmar furrowed his brow looking at the draw before his opening game of the Denari Challenges. The youngster has been involved in a number of high profile and lower-profile matches since bursting out onto the international Tennis scene with his debut win in the 2nd Kinteran only a few months ago. Following strong performances in a number of tournaments after that, he seems to have laid off of the gas pedal, dropping from first overall to third overall behind his friend and competitor Ardil Navsal (not in this tournament) and Aline Luiza Romao of Costa de Ouro. Montis de Surmar has blamed his rocky performances on lagging injuries, but there also seems to be other factors at play - one of which is his interesting relationship with Gulaga Grappo, fellow Anditon professional tennis player, mentor and doubles partner. Grappo essentially dropped out of the international tennis scene following an injury sustained during her last competition at the Lzher-Jeckland Invitational - where she was bounced during the Round of 16. His tight relationship with Grappo provided Al with a sense of serenity as he competed in his major competitions - this allowed him to focus upon the matches at hand rather than focusing on small nagging injuries or other aspects of his game. As a moderate perfectionist, Montis de Surmar can easily become a head-case, focusing on shots he should have made, or even how some of his scores could have been better - this produces an opportunity for his competitors to pick him apart in high pressure situations - one of the reasons he falls apart in late rounds. For this tournament, Montis de Surmar has renewed his focus upon the game itself, claiming that he will not be phased by the pressure of the later rounds -- if he makes it that far.

During his most recent game, Montis de Surmar faced Ray Richards as the title match of the Afternoon session. Al was able to easily focus on his opponent, providing replies to Richards' powerful serves with finesse and power, while providing his well placed serves on point. During the match, Al served well with a total of 7 Aces during the 6-2;6-3 win.

"My game was on point." Montis de Surmar stated "Richards has some potential, but he'll have to work on his footwork to be able to move on to the next level. I think that he could be a force in the future if he gets some decent coaching. But now I'm focusing on Dan(iel Joviano of Rarungan). I know that Dan has some decent stuff (Joviano is ranked in the ATP with 33 points) and could provide a bit of a challenge - aside from that I'm watching film and looking to see if I can pick apart his game."

Oscar Varscara, the other player from Anditia in the tournament also fared well in his opening match agains Dimitri Zlobin eventually winning the match. After Zlobin won the opening set, Varscara was able to turn the game around following an early stumble in the second set. Down 3-0, Oscar used his powerful serve to strike quickly and powerfully. An aditional tactic that was used by Varscara was what could only be described as akin to the "no-huddle offense" in gridiron football - rather than thinking about his serve, he quickly fired away, generally keeping Dimitri's rest to a minimum - allowing Varscara to win the second set. The rubber set proved to be a bit more challenging with the players trading wins back and forth until Varscara finally pulled ahead, defeating Zlobin 4:6; 6:4; 7:5. He will be facing Botak Andiam of Ceni during his next game. Andiam, the 5th seed, destroyed an unranked Louis Albern during the opening match of the tournament 6:2; 6:3. Even still, Oscar has a chance to defeat Andiam if he focuses on his game rather than being caught up in polishing his own ego.

Denari Challenges - Horrible Darvalian Performance

Image

Darvale's Zachary Navarre during his match against hosts Rarungan's Daniel Joviano

(15) Daniel Joviano (RAR)66
Zachary Navarre (DRV)14

Rarungan - It was the morning of the first day of the Denari Challenges that saw the utter demolition of Darvale's Zachary Navarre at the hands of world number 15 Daniel Joviano, who was playing on home soil. Even before the match, Navarre had admitted that he was not at all confident about the match, saying "the odds were not at all in his favor".

The match started, with Joviano quickly dominating the match, winning 4 straight games with Navarre only scoring 30 points. Navarre, however, still managed to hold on to what little motivation he had, and actually managed to win one game, although he lost the set 6-1.

The game only lasted 1 hour 15 minutes. With Navarre still hanging on to his last rays of hope, Joviano was actually momentarily outdone by Navarre's sudden refounded motivation. Navarre won the first game, which included an ace, with Joviano not scoring any points. Joviano, however, managed to get one back, winning the second game. Navarre kept on fighting, but was finally beaten 6-4, eliminating him from the tournament
(16) Malcolm Press (ETM)76
Lewis Diver (DRV)64

Rarungan - Although he still lost, Lewis Diver, the other Darvalian singles player in the tournament, put up a much better game than his counterpart, Navarre. Diver nearly won the first set, although he was just barely overpowered by world number 16, Malcolm Press, who won the set 7-6.

Diver was not at all demotivated, however, and managed to win another 4 games in the next set, getting a plausibly remarkable 3 aces in the second set alone. However, the quick reflexes of Press were too good for Diver, who eventually lost his motivation, allowing Press to easily finish Diver off, winning the set 6-4.

Denari Challenges - Darvale Doubles Preview

Image

Jeremy Plisson - Renowned for his speed and strength, the rather young, 23 year old Jeremy Plisson has never competed in an international event, thus making the Denari Challenges his debut tournament. Plisson has only competed in small tournaments within Darvale, and was recruited out of the Fairbanks Royal Tennis Club.

Plisson has been nicknamed "The Illusionist" by many people, due to his very trickful playstyle. He often tricks his opponents into thinking that he would hit the ball to one side of the court, but then proceed to hit the ball to the other side of the court in reality. Plisson is also left-handed, and is a back-hand specialist, although he can still has a good forehand.

Antonin Lerzhensky - Another amateur, recruit, Lerzhensky, at 24 years old, is 1 year older than fellow tennis man Jeremy Plisson, and also played in the Fairbanks Royal Tennis Club before being recruited to represent Darvale in the Denari Challenges. Lerzhensky plans to continue his professional tennis career after the tournament.

At just over 7 feet in height, Lerzhensky specializes in volleys, taking advantage of his height. He is, however, also proficient in both the forehand and the backhand, good support for his very offensive playstyle. Lerzhensky, like Plisson, has never played on an international level, but should not be underestimated.

Tough day for Gredello as she advances into the third day of competition

As expected, Sonya Gredello defeated surprise winner Moswike Guyende of New North Amquland. What was unexpected however, was that Gredello had to concede the second set before rallying back and winning. Guyende was in the world's spotlight after managing to defeat Belo, the third ranked in the world, but this exit at the hands of Gredello will surely disappoint Moswike's newfound fans. Nonetheless, Moswike will be an up-and-coming player to watch.

Up next for Gredello will be the formidable Brett Roley of Estope. After making the quarterfinals of the Electrum International Open at Hamilton, he has had an upbeat mood on his future prospects. He has reached the semifinals of the Antilla Masters and the Second Kinterten, but some early losses in other tournaments have made him a very unstable character. He is a risky player, with winners and drop shots part of his strategy to grab some points from the opposition. Known for his aggression, this will surely counteract Gredello's serve and volley style which makes her a unique part of this tour. Gredello will probably make those drop shots, but Roley's aggressive winners are something she needs to look out for.

Today will also feature the first day where Gredello will play two matches, instead of one. After receiving a first round bye, she and Rosa Levinsky managed to get a direct entry into the quarterfinals, the only seed to do so. They will face Irwin Bass and Alex Ache of Casagrande. They managed a close victory over Gustavpolis's Greg Kinnear and Joesph Thompson in three sets. Gredello and Levsinky are looking for an easy win here, to potentially book a clash with Rarungan's Prabawa and Astuti, who yield a significant hometown advantage in their home event. Nonetheless, with two matches in a day, will she be able to cope with the exhaustion she may face?

Meanwhile, in Electrum, preparations are underway for the first Electrum Lawn Tennis Open. They have taken on the role of the second grand slam of the year after the Cenian Open after delays in preparations for the Jexxus tournaments (hosted by Jeckland and Nexxus Drako). The ELTA, or the Electrum Lawn Tennis Association is willing to attract and woo new players and nations to this grand slam. Although details are forthcoming, what's known is that it will payout the maximum amount of ATP points in the tour (equal to the Cenian Open), and will consist of 96 automatic qualifiers, 8 wildcards from Electrum (to be given at the host's discretion) and 24 qualification entries and will feature a full field of 128 hosted over two weeks. The president for the ELTA, Tim Wills has said that the signups will open in a couple of weeks time.

[The doubles tournament will be 64 pairs, 48 of whom are automatically entered into the competition, 4 Electrum wildcards and 12 qualification entries]

Things Look Dire as Quarterfinals Come Next

While there's a Llamanean in the quarterfinals, things do not look good as Dustin Willinger has fallen and Reagan Harris goes head to head with the legendary Al Montis de Surmar, former world number-one. Meanwhile, the doubles team won a round, also advancing to the quarterfinals, but how long will it last?

Let's take a look at all four singles matches that have gone on.

Image

Despite the "never-lost-a-set" shtick, Harris actually wasn't on top of her game early today. The forehand was a shade too flat, the serve a little long, the buoyant carelessness slightly too careless. But against an opponent of the caliber of Juan Collosio, she was able to gut it out in the first set, breaking twice in a row after Collosio got up on her 3-1. Collosio's backhand was going as strong as he could make it, but ultimately Harris won without conceding a single point in the final two sets as she took over. It carried over, Reagan winning four straight sets before Collosio could stop her with a break, which still wasn't enough as the Llamanean singles champion handily beat Collosio.

Image

Yep, Dustin's old.

But he can handle it against players like Brayle, apparently. Two slipups and Willinger was playing hurt for much of the half, wrist injuries contributing to a sloppy backhand and a 3-1 deficit early on. But his dominant forehand, when used sparingly, came out, and his ability to gently chase Brayle around the court without doing much lead to a 5-5 tie, where he broke Brayle and converted on his serve to come out ahead, recovering on his momentum and slamming Brayle around for a win.

Image

Alas, it was not to last. Willinger was just too old, and despite coming out and really banging Roley around early on to take a commanding 5-1 lead, strength faded, Roley recovered a killer forehand, and Willinger was found playing for his life as Roley began to slap around his opponent. The two battled to a standstill, whereupon Roley slammed Willinger 7-1. After a rest, the Llamanean legend got out to another hot start, but once again Roley battled from down 4-2 and took a 7-5 win.

Image

But against Casagrande's Eugene Long, Reagan Harris kept her run going in style, getting everything together and dispatching the hapless Long 6-2, 6-1. Harris faces Al Montis de Surmar, the Anditian with a slew of grand slams in his belt. Can a Cinderella run continue as Reagan upsets her way to the semifinals? Or will it all end?

Montis de Surmar fares well. Advances to Semis
James Van Glorpen -- Anditon Free Press

"The ball has been landing where I've tried to put it. Really, that's all I can ask for. So far, I
Be been facing some interesting challengers, but none have been much work. I mean, not to disparage them or anything, but I haven't really seen anyone too high in the ATP to this point... nor have I faced any high seeds to this point- luckily." Al Montis de Surmar was getting frustrated with the questions regarding his upcoming match with Estope's Bret Roley. Roley has done well in the Denari Challenges to this point, defeating a more well known competitor - Dustin Willinger (11th seed). Having recently defeated Super Llamaland's Reagan Harris in three sets, Al has seen the toughest competition of the higher seeds to this point. His knowledge of this was apparent as the local press downplayed his recent defeat of Harris. "Reagan is a great competitor. Even though she's struggled in a few of her matches, she beat me fair and square in the first set. Mind you, I don't think that is much of an indication of how I'll do against Brett, but still it is indicative of how good of a competition the match actually was. Looking forward, I only have to say that Brett and I have played well in the past. He's a good player and I am, in no way, downplaying the upcoming game. I'm focused and ready to compete."

Montis de Surmar will be facing Brett Roley during the morning of the next day's games unlike his previous matches that have all taken place in the afternoon. Additionally, with Roley as a similar seed (6) compared to Harris(7) we should expect to see a largely similar result- a split game that turns out to be decently close throughout. We still expect Montis de Surmar to win and go on to face #1 seed (2nd in the world) Aline Luiza Romao in the final.
