Third Time's the Charm for Lions?

Martin Granger, Staff Reporter

The Lions have entered into qualification for the 24th edition of the World Cup of Hockey, their third time entering this major international competition. The first time they entered, they finished with a record of 3-3-6 (W-D-L), for 9 points and fifth of seven teams in their group. They played a much more determined and skilled first half of qualifying, but faded down the stretch due to fatigue and what seemed like a general inattentiveness (OOC: I was unable to RP my final 3 matches due to RL issues and lost them all by an aggregate of 11-1). The second time they entered, they finished with a record of 4-1-4 (W-D-L), for 13 points and fourth of ten teams in their group, missing the playoffs. They started off quite poorly, with a record of 0-1-3 through the first four games, and had people calling for Head Coach Cecil Palmer's job. They then got on a roll, winning four in a row, and putting themselves in a win-and-you're-in scenario on MD9 against Hicana. The magic ran out, as they were shut out 2-0, but Palmer still has his job. That may be due in part to their performance at the inaugural Royal Alexandre Hockey Invitational, where they were drawn into a tough group, but still managed to reach the quarterfinals, including impressive wins over Valanora and Sicoutimont, before being shut out by Ko-oren.

The U20 side made it to the quarterfinals before losing to Gregoryisgodistan at the World Juniors Championship in the Royal Kingdom of Quebec. There is only one player from that squad on this team, but some of the recent graduates will hopefully bring their fire and enthusiasm to this veteran squad. The team is mostly composed of players from the domestic NAHL, which has a high level of play, but also features a few players currently playing at the AHL level of the United States' NHL. The group matchups have not been announced yet, but we'll preview the roster right here. Cecil Palmer prefers a moderate defensive style, one that focuses on discipline and toughness. You won't see many penalties conceded, but you also won't see any short-handed breaks down the ice. This is a team that makes their money on the power play and on their excellent passing.

Nova Anglicana Lions Senior Hockey Team

Head Coach: Cecil Palmer
Style Modifier: -1
Captain: Rene Robinson
Assistant Captains: Kermit Lea, Andres Kelly

1st Line
RW Kermit Lea, 36 - "The Frog" nickname is inevitable, and he's slowed a bit, but the whole nation has faith in him
C Rene Robinson, 35 - the captain is the league's premier center and an excellent two-way player; he will be depended on for a lot
LW Matt Grier, 29 - Palmer likes him so much because he always knows when to (and not to) make the extra pass, picks up his fair share of goals as well

2nd Line
RW Derek Jensen, 33 - Jensen is quiet, but a deadly shooter, handles the puck well
C Troy Parker, 27 - young center is a natural-born leader, plenty of energy, but needs to keep himself under control and work on his offensive game
LW Jacques Crist, 34 - Crist has a habit of leaking out, which annoys Palmer, but he's succeeded enough at it to have free rein

3rd Line
RW Jay Schwartz, 30 - loves the wraparound, team prankster
C Dallas Carlson, 22 – the former U20 captain has enormous confidence and the skills to match, graduates to third line
LW Jordan Bergeron, 26 - former AHL Norfolk Admiral, he's got as much raw talent as anyone, but needs a ton of coaching

4th Line
RW Doug LaRose, 32 - bit of a banger for a wing, his work ethic is second to none, goal-scoring skills leave a lot to be desired
C Ellis White, 25 - White is an up-and-comer in the NAHL, 51 points got national team's attention
LW Ricky Knight, 20 – for Knight, it’s an honor to make the squad, his knack for making just the right pass is already at senior team level

Pair 1
Zach McCoy, 31 - plays with Russell in NAHL, chemistry extremely valuable
Josh Russell, 33 - provides the bulk to McCoy's finesse, excellent tag team duo

Pair 2
Hank Weber, 27 - Weber has the large skates of Roger Day to fill, but he's a good all-around player
Gregg Barrett, 34 - excellent passer, but not afraid to clog the net and look for rebounds

Pair 3
Dwayne Burke, 35 - led the league in blocked shots, rarely takes a penalty
Garry Foster, 34 - not afraid to drop the gloves and go after someone, sizzling slap shot

Pair 4
Cody Riley, 29 - Riley is one of the league's best defensemen, bit overaggressive at times, can lead to fights
Marq Brint, 24 – Brint has built on his physicality to become a force, plays all facets of the game well

Goaltenders
Andres Kelly, 34 - Kelly is equally adept with the glove as he is with the rest of his body, three shutouts in last go-round
Bryan Blake, 27 - young man had an excellent defensive campaign that helped lead his team to the playoffs
Todd Ingram, 22 – capable of standing on his head at times, but is particular vulnerable in the 5-hole, upper half stronger than lower half

Power Play 1
1st Line + Defensive Pair 1

Power Play 2
2nd Line + Defensive Pair 2

Penalty Kill 1
1st Line + Defensive Pair 1

Penalty Kill 2
4th Line + Defensive Pair 3

Notes

Prince Josephus is a younger brother of the King of Saintland. He is also the younger brother of Prince Ioannes and the twin brother of Prince Andreas. Line #1 is the scoring line and the one that handles power plays and penalty kills. Clovius is the 2-time reigning league MVP in Saintland. The Trebatius brothers, Doessenius brothers and Murrius brothers are the brother combinations on this team. In ice hockey, as in every team sport, the style of play in Saintland's national league is very physical and many things that are considered fouls in international play aren't fouls in Saintland. Sanctii defensemen are very likely to get into fights at the slightest provocation, if their team is losing or if they are facing a rival and/or somebody they really don't like. This team won the silver medal at the Winter Olympics, but only won 2 out of 10 games at the 21st World Cup of Hockey, where they were plagued by injuries and the distraction of also competing in field hockey and lacrosse. After WCoH 21, most of the players on the team began playing domestically in Quebec. This led to a successful 22nd WCoH which saw them finish second in a tough group, at the expense of Qazox. Despite hosting the 23rd WCoH, their performance at the event was disastrous, finishing just 3-1-5, 7th in a 10 team group.

Borschland WCoH XXIV Preview and Roster

Image

We go a-roaming
by Kadmus Greningen

All Borschland is on the tips of their skates. We are entered in the XXIV World Cup of Ice Hockey.

It was announced late last night that forecasts show we will be in this phase shift for an extended period, long enough for our boys to travel to strange nations and back before we make the inevitable transition to our original earth.

Thus, the fathers of the Borschland Hockey League gave their blessing to this international-- nay global-- competition. Of course, we know next to nothing at this point about the teams we will play. More on that as it becomes available. We do know that the boys of Borschland will represent their country in fine fashion, as they always do. This competition will be different from our Continental Cup, the ice hockey tournament we are accustomed to winning annually. This competition will be with nations from all over the alternative globe we are sometimes involved with.

In anticipation of the games, captain Sherm Reinhardt, our North American hero, has been consulting with associate head managers Chrujstenkaamp of Staff Borsch and Loorminden of Matexipar to determine the finest team possible. Breaking news indicates our number one goalie will be the incomparable Heiko Moordfors of Matexipar. The first line augurs very well indeed: Sherm is paired with the Sudmaas brothers of Bjaward, Jelle and Joris. Te Staff's Chrujstoff Anselm, he of the lightning-quick skates, is listed on the second line as a right wing, out of his normal position as center, but that position is taken up by Habel Baarda, who has been a fixture on Tarlunz for so many years and is arguably the finest goal-scorer of the modern era of Borschic ice hockey. On that line as well, the young and dynamic Kai Ganesmund of Wrischer, so accomplished at the tender age of twenty one. Te Staff also has placed Hauke Sybrandy and Uwe Sipken, dependable veterans, on the third line, and two defensemen, Gerd Luppink and Rogijr Kelmenstremmer. Onatten's giant of a defender, Tjard Meern, will see many minutes in the first pairing of defensemen with the ultra-dependable Klaes Diefenhoven, Lojren's own shining star.

The main questions about how our nation will fare revolve about the playing conditions. It has been advertised that the rink dimensions will be standard to the National Hockey League of North America, which is smaller than our spacious Borschic rinks. In addition, there has been some talk about the amount of fighting allowed. The kind of game that is more like a clinch-and-pummel boxing match than an exhibition of skating and stickhandling prowess is foreign to our ethos. Thus, if the officiating is more permissive of violence in any form, it could be deleterious for our boys. At the same time, however, there is no one with quicker hands than the Borschic hockey player, and we have been known to finish off a fight with a lightning jab or two, regardless of the size of the opponent. But all of this is speculation. We await breathlessly the first pairings, with full knowledge that this will test the mettle of our skaters to their utmost. As we say in Borschland, Zelfs God nujkt wejt waar te puck zal rusten-- Not even God knows where the puck will go.

Roster

Borschland National Team (club team listed, all players from Borschland Hockey League)

Head Coach: Chrujstenkaamp (Te Staff) and Loorminden (Matexipar)
Style Modifier: -3
Nickname: Swans
Captain: Sherm Reinhardt
Assistant Captains: Heiko Moordfors, Tjaard Meern

Goalies

G Heiko Moordfors, 5'10, 175 lb, 30 (Matexipar) - Moordfors is solid as a rock for the "Iron Sticks" of Matexipar, league's GAA leader looks to hone his skills on world stage
G Rokus Osthav’n, 5'10, 170 lb, 26 (Rijward) - posted shutouts in nearly half his matches last year, SV% leader nearly won starting job
G Skylar Magnusson, 6'1, 180 lb, 30 (Onatten) - Swedish immigrant burst onto scene last year, just edged Norbert Grimm of Te Staff for third spot

First Line

RW Jelle Sudmaas, 5'11, 168 lb, 24 (Bjaward) - forms the scoring half of the Sudmaas Brothers duo, but a great passer in his own right
C Sherm Reinhardt, 6', 195 lb, 22 (Te Staff) - an immigrant from College of the Lakes, Minnesota, the merikanische took the Borschic league by storm and now leads the national team
LW Joris Sudmaas, 5'11, 179 lb, 24 (Bjaward) - more skilled at passing than his brother, Joris is still a deadly shooter

Second Line

RW Chrustoff Anselm, 5'7, 148 lb, 27 (Te Staff) - the ladies' man picks up many roses after the game, moved from center to wing to accommodate team, extremely quick on his feet
C Habel Baarda, 6'1, 210 lb, 32 (Tarlunz) - Borschic league's scoring leader until Reinhardt showed up, Baarda can do it all
LW Kai Ganesmund, 6'1, 205 lb, 21 (Wrischer) - extremely talented young wing, his head is still a bit young, but his physical tools and stick-handling can go head-to-head against anyone

Third Line

RW Hauke Sybrandy, 5'9, 172 lb, 28 (Te Staff) - has a knack for scoring big goals, such as the winning goal in Te Staff's first game against Matexipar
C Sikke Pfelward, 5'10, 187 lb, 34 (Bevinlunz) - Pfelward is an aging star who was signed to get his club team out of the doldrums, bit of an ego but an excellent player
LW Uwe Sipken 5'9, 165 lb, 29 (Te Staff) - Oovie, as Sherm calls him, is a good passer and works well with Sybrandy, the two will feed Pfelward a lot

Fourth Line

RW Lourens Nordhall, 5'8, 169 lb, 32 (Domatische) - Nordhall is a sniper, but won't offer much on D
C Wiebe Kappe, 5'9, 166 lb, 21 (Meechen) - Meechen's young center rivals Ganesmund in skill if not in size, sneaky good on the fourth line
LW Conrad Bartul 5'10, 175 lb, 26 (Matexipar) - Bartul anchors Matexipar's offense, skilled in all facets of game and can be physical if called on, like most Matexipar players

Defenders

Pair 1

Tjaard Meern, 6'3, 245 lb, 33 (Onatten) - Meern is the biggest man on the team, but look for him to be involved tactically more than physically, great two-way guy
Klaes Diefenhoven, 5'10, 190 lb, 28 (Lojren) - Diefenhoven is one of the best Borschic defenseman; an wonderful skater who excels at the poke check, he's also a deadly shooter

Pair 2

Gerd Luppink, 6', 220 lb, 30 (Te Staff) - Luppink is sturdy and blocks a lot of shots
Rogijr Kelmenstremmer, 6'1, 230 lb, 31 (Te Staff) - Kelmenstremmer is also not afraid to sacrifice his body, team may rely on him as enforcer

Pair 3

Julius Schymart, 5'11, 204 lb, 29 (Matexipar) - unusual in that he's a good body checker, Schymart leads the renowned "Iron Sticks" defense and can contribute a goal or two
Bram Landseer, 5'10, 208 lb, 28 (Meechen) - wields a heavy slap shot but is also a good passer, needs to work on handling the puck

Pair 4

Halvor Thijs, 5'10, 199 lb, 30 (Atterische) - Thijs is a decent scorer for a defenseman and reasonably quick
Sebastiaan Piron, 5'9, 192 lb, 32 (Onatten) - Piron is a stoic type, a good skater and stick handler as well as passer

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose My Scorers: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes, within reason (strange things happen in Borschland sometimes, TG me if you're not sure)
RP Injuries to My Players: Yes, only one per game, no killing or maiming
Godmod Injuries to My Players: No
RP Penalties for My Players: Yes, but only one or two per game, Borschic hockey players commit very few penalties
RP Ejections for My Players: No
Godmod Other Events: Yes (within character for Borschland, if you want a surprise phase shift to trap your team in Borschland for a while, TG me; the one exception to this yes is checks. If you host, then your players may hit the Borschers some. When Borschland hosts, I will consider more than two checks to be a godmod. Body checking is both highly unlikely and severely punished in Borschic-style hockey)

On Borschland and its Hockey

(Courtesy of the Borschland National Tourist Board)

Borschland is one nation out of seven on a very large island or small continent that many scientists theorize lies in the Indian Ocean, a thousand or so miles southwest of Australia.

"Theorize," because Borschland's "Continent" isn't always there, cannot be "seen" by satellites, and is sometimes difficult to find by travelers from the outside world. The most popular theory about the Continent is that it is partly located in an alternative-universe earth, and partly located in our earth, and often "phases" between the two, meaning that it can become separated from the "wide world" at any time for any length of time.

People

The Borschers are a proud and independent people defined by their hard-working, pragmatic spirit and love for ice hockey. Inured to centuries of relative separation from the outside world, and in fierce competition with other distinctly-peopled nations, the Borschers think of themselves as the epitome of the civilized world.

This self-esteem (or, as some would say, insecurity) does not translate into belligerence or a desire for conquest. The borders of the nations have been remarkably stable for a very long time. There is a continent-wide distrust of advanced technology, which has retarded adoption of military systems such as airplanes and missiles. The technology of most of the continent resembles that of the beginning of the twentieth century, with some exceptions such as the presence of modern automobiles, used almost exclusively in cities. There are no computers or televisions, though radio is universally popular. The bulk of the populace travels by rail or horse-drawn carriage. In large cities, electric subway trains provide mass transit. There is some hydroelectric damming in the mountains.

Geography

The population of Borschland is about 6 million, with about 75,000 Loflinlanders in addition. Almost all of these 6 million are native Borschers whose families have lived there for up to 300 years.

Borschland, if it were able to be mapped in the wide world, would probably be considered the most populous nation closest to the continent of Antarctica. Its southern coast reaches south latitude of about 50 degrees, the same as southernmost Chile and Argentina. The maritime nature of most of Borschland moderates the climate somewhat, especially in the summer, when Borschers flock to beaches from the coastal cities of Lojren, Bevinlunz, and the resort island of Itasca.

Borschland is blessed with abundant natural resources, of which its greatest is the grand peat bog of the Upper Borschland River, which is used for 33% of the nation's energy needs. There is also large stores of coal (42% of energy needs; petroleum and other fossil oils 14%; wind and water 10%) and iron which fuel Borschland's industry. The plain north of the Borschland River is a grain and livestock producing area, while the area between the river and the coast is fertile farming land for dairy, fruits (apples dominantly), vegetables, wine grapes, and hops for beer.

Hockey

Ice hockey, for Borschers, acts as a de facto national religion. In the cold climate of Borschland, ice hockey has flourished, and with the advent of refrigeration (brought in from Bearland with many modern technologies), the ice hockey season can go even longer. Normally played on outdoor rinks, the professional Borschland Hockey League season lasts from mid-November to mid-March, with matches played on Wednesdays and Saturdays for sixteen weeks. The Borschland Cup, a 64-team tournament pitting the 16 teams of the professional league with semi-pro, university, and amateur teams, takes place on various nights in the six weeks after Epiphany, a Festival of Lights which is the most important religious holiday in the nation. The championship game of the Borschland Cup is held at the conclusion of the season in March.

Borschic hockey is played on outdoor rinks, often frozen ponds in more rural areas. The typical Borschic rink is wider and longer than an NHL rink, more like an Olympic size rink. As a result, Borschic hockey prizes good skating and stick-handling rather than checks and fights. If your burly defenseman tries to take someone's head off, expect him to find himself sprawled on the ice or smashing into the boards, earning himself bruises for his trouble. For this reason, expect the Borschland team to try to tucker out the opposition by skating all over the ice and maintaining possession with crisp passing. Borschic players won't commit many penalties; it's hard to interfere or trip someone when there's so much space to be had on the ice.

The Swans will play their home matches at Te Ruynk, the home rink of Te Staff in the capital of Staff Borsch. It is seen below being used as a skating rink when the BHL is out of season. It seats around 6,800 in the grandstand, but there will be standing room only available all around the rink.

* There will be all kinds of mixing between the strings, the lineups are not set in stone. Same with pairings. There is no major professional hockey league in Neu Engollon, but there is a minor league and a strong university tradition in the sport. The Ibex are pulled from a mix of the two, but most of the stronger players come from Burgunden University or the Ciavno Jackals, the top minor league hockey team.

Nation: The Federal Republic of Allamunnic States
Team: Grey-and-Blues (Or "Greys," or "Blues," and nobody will see anything amiss if referred to as the "Regulars")
Team Colors: Royal Blue, Dark Grey,
Style Modifier: -5 (or "Most-Defensive" equivalent)

Home Arena: Triple City Coliseum, Vienna, Ostrea (Capacity: 54,000) - Vienna has a very well-tended-to and modern arena which is shared by several teams, not the least of them being the powerhouse Saint Theodore Saints, along with the Vienna Huskies, and the Innsbruck Valkyries. It's not believed that the Regulars will need all the space (crowds aren't projected to be huge, given that the LHL's regular season is currently on), but if they do, it won't be found wanting.

Choose my scorers: Go ahead, but be mindful of the lines and such.
Penalise my players: Sure, but keep it reasonable, and keep in mind that the Allamunnic team plays rough.
Injure my players: Yes, but if it's going to keep a player out more than a single game, please check with me for approval, first.
Godmod scoring: Acceptable, but if you're going to, make it interesting.
Godmod injuries: Sure, but with the same constraints as normal injuries. Please check with me, first.
Godmod other events: Yeah, but see above constraints. If you're not sure about something, please check with me, first.

Overview:

After a poor showing in WCoH XVII (2-3-1), Kyle Smart embraced a shift in philosophy, resulting in a much better showing at WCoH XVIII of 5-3-2 (W-D-L) before a run to the quarterfinals, where the team lost in a shootout to Gyatso-Kai. In the time between WCoHs XVII and XVIII, the Allamunnic squad shifted from a balanced team to one with a bunch of lack-luster veterans with an emphasis on rough, physical play. With that going for them, and fresh off a fairly successful playoff run, the Allamunnic squad looked poised to work its way into the elite.

And then funding fell through.

The Allamunnic hockey team languished in a bizarre purgatory, still technically a standing organization, but unable to compete in anything but the smallest of regional competitions. It took its toll, with many of their best players fleeing to the revived domestic league, the Levantian Hockey League, now incorporating teams from the neighboring Empiratium Drakonicum. Fast-forward, and a team who, in their last appearance had made it to the quarterfinals and lost to one of the world's hockey powerhouses only in a shootout, found themselves unnoticed, unranked, one of the crowd of middling newcomers, and unremembered by many of the nations that had taken the ice in their absence. Combined with the further plummet in prestige at home, the team seems to have adopted a rather nasty, scrappy attitude towards their competition.

On the gridiron and lacrosse pitch the Allamunnae are known for politeness and civility to go along with tough play. On the diamond, soccer pitch, and basketball court, the Allamunnae are not known for much at all. But it seems like now, on the ice, the Allamunnae may become known as a nasty, rough bunch. Only time will tell if that will be enough to get the Blue-and-Grey the respect they feel they deserve.

Head Coach: Kyle Smart - (Age: 52) - A less stubborn coach would have quit after the difficulties of the last five-and-a-half years. A less stubborn coach might have quit, tired of living in his far more successful cousin's shadow. Hearing about Ryan Smart's three championships compared to his none, however, has only fueled Kyle Smart. Turned him from a young, enthusiastic coach to a man in his fifties perpetually pissed off at the world and government for their slights towards his team and himself. A man not far from being fueled by pure rage, some would say, and more than a little paranoia. He's shaped the team to a similar extent, and every one of his players has an equally-large chip on their shoulder, even if they aren't as angry at the world as Smart and his right-hand man, forward Mike Ward.

Players:

Forwards:

First Line:

L#32 Michael Ward (Height: 6'2"; Weight: 218lbs; Age: 41) - Six years was enough to turn Ward from a washed-up major-leaguer seeking redemption to a seething cauldron of borderline-homicidal misanthropy. The man has issues, to put it mildly, and the only way to describe his play is dirty. Ward will slash, board, trip, and brawl as much as he can get away with, and even as one of the team's smaller players, is big enough and has enough fighting experience to flatten most team's enforcers. Ward's violent, spiteful attitude seems to be contagious, and he is something of the team's heart, egging on and encouraging his teammates to play as rough and dirty as he does. In terms of offensive production, Ward is streaky, firing off shots that may or may not be on target. He seems to have a knack for scoring in bunches, interspersed with noticeable dry spells.

C#44 - Vikus Svaartrok (Height: 6'5"; Weight: 248lbs; Age: 20) - Svaartrok comes from the rough streets of Dunnmaar, having done a stint in juvenile hall from ages 15 to 17 for stealing a car. Despite his linemate's example, Svaartrok is fundamentally a good guy, but having learned the street variant of hockey, Svaartrok's norms for acceptable contact are out there, and he has little to no sympathy for opposing players, and his low-class status and the like have left him with a scrappy attitude. Despite having the build and skill set of an enforcer, Svaartrok is probably the team's most explosive player, now, so expect him to either set up a lot of scores or to get fed the puck a lot. Who knows, maybe he can be a star in a year or two if the team doesn't end up being a collective bad influence on him.

R#39 - Junn Farrangur (Height: 6'3"; Weight: 251lbs; Age: 26) - Farrangur is another player with background as a rough-around-the-edges brawler. Farrangur did a year in state prison for his role in a bar fight, and his previous hockey experience is as an aggressive defenseman, used on offense as much as defense. Still, that background in Allamunnic hockey and the influence of his teammates means that Farrangur is going to be a violent jerk on the ice, and he's meaner then Blaekrok easily. Still, he's not as hateful and psychopathic as Ward, which is something. That said, Farrangur still plays with a nasty attitude, so he'll probably be in plenty of scrapes and will play as dirty as he thinks he can get away with.

Second Line:

L#25 - Graagur Baering (Height: 6'4"; Weight: 234lbs; Age: 19) - Baering is a promising minor-leaguer brought on-board by Smart. He is an effective skater, puts some blistering speed on his shots, and has a nose for the goal, so he tends to be on-target, even if the goalie ends up stopping the shot. Like all of Smart's players, Baering is a bit rough, and if he's not as scrappy as some of the other players, that's only because he has yet to be seriously disrespected; he's already got a bit of an edge from his teammates, and Allamunnic hockey tends to be heavy on the rough play and fighting to begin with.

C#33 - Rikard Karlsunn (Height: 6'5"; Weight: 238lbs; Age: 20) - Karlsunn is another promising minor-leaguer that Smart recruited for the team. Karlsunn is something of a point-guard type player, spreading the puck around to his wingers, while also being a capable shot in his own right. Another player who is already large (and expected to grow a bit more), Karlsunn is a physical player, and he has a knack for finding his mark in a fight. Like Baering and Waaldmunn, Karlsunn has yet to pick up the nasty attitude of most of his teammates, but he makes up for it by being something of a boisterous bruiser.

R#21 - Vitimur Waaldmunn (Height: 6'4"; Weight: 236lbs; Age: 19) - Waaldmunn is also a young prospect, a minor-leaguer brought on-board by Smart because of how much promise he shows as a complete player. Waaldmunn is an effective forward, both in the passing game and in puck control, as well as having a powerful shot (although his accuracy still needs work). Like his linemates, Waaldmunn has yet to pick up most of his teammates' nasty attitude, but since he's a large, strong Allamunnic hockey player, he still plays a bit rough, and is no stranger to dropping the gloves in the free-wheeling and extra-violent minor-league.

Third Line:

L#30 - Alarik Stahlburg (Height: 6'4"; Weight: 251lbs; Age: 24) - No relation to long-retired Copenhagen center Maarkus Stahlburg. Alarik is a competent winger with the team's usual mix of physicality, scrappy-attitude, and powerful shots, with somewhat lacking accuracy. Stahlburg is the third liner likely to get the most playing time, since Mike Ward will inevitably get suspended or ejected at some point.

C#24 - Fredrik Hoskaarl (Height: 6'3"; Weight: 248lbs; Age: 23) - Hoskaarl, more solidly-built than his linemates, is even more of a brawler and a bruiser, the sort of person that likes a good fight. He's also good at spreading the puck around, setting up shots for his wingers, and a capable shooter himself. Hoskaarl is too exuberant to be nasty, but he's a rough, physical player all the same, simply because he enjoys playing that way.

R#36 - Kristian Andersunn (Height: 6'5"; Weight: 253lbs; Age: 25) - Andersunn is the largest of the third-liners, and is probably the meanest. A former bouncer and enforcer for private security companies (his day job while being a minor-league hockey player), Andersunn has no pity or sympathy for opposing players, and seems to enjoy putting a healthy fear in them with his large frame and heavy, but athletic body. He's not a great shooter, but he's competent enough.

Defensemen

First Pair:

D#66 Haanryk Grimmur (Height: 6’4”; Weight: 255lbs; Age: 36)(Captain) - It's been said that prison changes a man. Grimmur would be a solid case-study in that statement. After serving four years after pleading out on an assault in Dunnmaar, Grimmur has gone from a civil, if a bit rough, player to a blue-line enforcer who seems to enjoy battering opponents a little too much. He's a rougher guy off the ice than he was a few years ago, but at least he's not actually a bad person normally, just an average guy with some anger-management issues.

D#57 Wilhelm Krueger (Height: 6'4"; Weight: 246lbs; Age: 28) - Krueger is, to put it simply, an asshole. He was always a rough-and-tumble player who was a little more violent than he probably should have been, but over the last two years seems to have gotten worse. Partly because his coach has done nothing to discourage him, partly his own frustrations, and partly because he takes his example from fellow blue-liner Haanryk Grimmur. Additionally, after getting embarrassed one-too-many times, Krueger has been left with a seething hatred for the athletic forwards who inevitably lead scoring tables, and he shows a disturbingly malicious glee in battering that sort of player.

Second Pair:

D#55 Joseph Quinn (Height: 6’2”; Weight: 244lbs; Age: 35) – Quinn has been playing with more of a chip on his shoulder of late, much like the rest of the squad. His attitude is better, and he's been working more on his abilities on the attack, diversifying to be more than just a blue-liner. He's big and solid, and plays physical, so that aspect of his game is no different from his teammates, but at least he's less nasty then most of them.

D#95 Thomas McKnight (Height: 6’1”; Weight: 241lbs; Age: 34) – McKnight is another old hand on the team, and if he's soured and his attitude is worse than it used to be, the formerly explosive (and still versatile) defenseman is still fundamentally a good person who won't try to hurt opposing players, simply playing with the usual Allamunnic level of physicality and intensity. Combined with his abilities as an attacker, McKnight will usually come in with Quinn when the team needs to score relatively quickly.

Third Pair:

D#51 - Jurgen Hoerst (Height: 6'5"; Weight: 248lbs; Age: 21) - Nicknamed "Braniac" by his teammates, Hoerst is the only player currently on the roster to finish college. That said, he's still a large-framed, physical player who has a certain amount of enjoyment for physical play. He's not as nasty as Grimmur or Krueger, but the main difference is that he does not seem to enjoy hurting opponents the way they do. Hoerst is one of the more effective defensemen on the attack, and might well be able to score or at least threaten with his shots.

D#50 - Bryndyn Waalturs (Height: 6'4"; Weight: 240lbs; Age: 20) - Waalturs is beyond talented as a hockey player. Already a large player, he is an effective and skilled skater, has a nose for the goal and fires blistering shots, and has some talent as an enforcer. Like many of his teammates, Waalturs is more than a little bit of a brawler, and he takes enough enjoyment from playing as a strong-armed, brutal enforcer that he's well-suited to the team as a whole. Look for him to develop into an excellent all-around player.

Goalkeepers

G#99 - Harald Skyllur (Height: 6'5"; Weight: 220lbs; Age: 26) - Skyller is a huge, sprawling goal-tender with the dimensions and body control to make for an imposing keeper. He's about as foul-tempered as a goalkeeper can be, and he will get angry and flustered if he's having a bad day. For that matter, he may start stepping a little further out to start challenging forwards, if he gets frustrated enough, and he's not above slugging or body-checking unsuspecting opponents.

G#98 - Kyl Jurgensunn (Height: 6'4"; Weight: 218lbs; Age: 20) - Jurgensunn is a younger keeper built in the same mold as Skyllur; big, in full control of his large frame, and athletic enough to make all the necessary saves, and even move a little out of net to help play the puck to his defensemen. Jurgensunn, by contrast, though, is considerably more stoic, less prone to blowing his fuse and generally being an asshole than the keeper ahead of him.

Attawapiskat (/ˌætəˈwɑːpɨskæt/ Cree: ᐋᐦᑕᐙᐱᐢᑲᑐᐎ ᐃᓂᓂᐧᐊᐠ Āhtawāpiskatowi ininiwak, "People of the parting of the rocks"; unpointed: ᐊᑕᐗᐱᐢᑲᑐᐎ ᐃᓂᓂᐧᐊᐠ) is an isolated city located in the northwestern corner of Northwest, Royal Kingdom of Quebec, at the mouth of the Attawapiskat River at Guerin Bay. Attawapiskat has been a mining city for its entire existence, owing its existence to two mineral deposits that were nearby. Royal Āhtawāpiskatowi Deposit, located northwest of the city of 750,000, was the World’s largest Diamond deposit, while Northland-Denver Deposit, which is 50km away to the northeast, was the World’s largest Emerald deposit. Recently however they have been diversifying their economy into telecommunications and trades, bringing the city additional economic boom. As a result, Politics-wise, it has been a conservative and traditional area, which was shown through the dominance of Parti Quebecois in last several provincial and federal elections.

That being said, at the centre of its life stood hockey. Hockey, like many northern cities, was integral to most citizens’ lives and was well followed. Attawapiskat had its shares of championships in Gridiron and Basketball, but even then those championships didn’t erode away the level of support those Crees had in the city. Northwestern University and University of Attawapiskat had excellent programs, with 12 QIS Championships being won by them since 1956. Atttawapikat Mariners and Attawapiskat Jr. Avalanche were two of the QMJHL’s most successful and consistent teams, with both selling out their games almost every single time.

Then there’s Attawapiskat Avalanche, the top of all things hockey at this city. Avalanche, who has played in this Mile High city when they relocated from Verdun to this isolated city of 560,000 back then, has won three cups: In 1996, 2001 and 2016. The first two came through years of painful rebuilding the team had in the Suburban Montreal, which only came into fruition the year after they relocated. The last one came through similar process, though this time, they had much better plans to speed up the process. They brought in the right coach(Guy Aronnax), a HHoFer goalie; right pieces in positions and of course, money.

Soo Myeon Kim, our very own prima donna of the story, was a very first piece added to it. Picked 3rd Overall by Avalanche in 2009 QHL Draft (held in Gaspe, Gaspecie), he was a key part of the 5-year rebuilding phase as its #1 centre. Of course, the process wasn’t pleasant by all means, as the Avalanche missed playoffs for 4 of his first 5 seasons before taking the West Division title in 2012-2013. Then came 3 seasons of early playoff exits, until this year. He finally got to win the coveted cup in its 7th year as a player, with a Pavel Han Trophy (Playoff MVP) to add to his cupboard.
Now that being said, it’s only 7 days until the start of another season, the one that will feature him as a superstar of this Quebecois game. On the way though many interesting things happened. Through this series one will be able to see Soo Myeon’s last 7 days before the home and season opener, as well as a bit of his lifestyle, stories and of course lot more of Attawapiskat.

D-7: (1)

Kâyâsiyâkan station was built in 1971, as one of first station on the A-Train network. Being located at the heart of the city, it was one of 6 stations (Barrensboro, Nuttahkanti, Abooksigun, Attawapiskat H and Oboneswin were the other stations) in the network to serve all 6 lines of the railway network. Standing at the Platform 4, Soo Myeon Kim waited for the train to arrive. Dressed up in a light suit and just shaved his moustache, he looked as sharp as he could be.
He knew that taking train often can be a risky thing to do so, because of the number of flashes and whispers his appearance at the stations and train sets would generate. After all Soo Myeon, as the cup-winning superstar and captain of the Avalanche, was by far the most famous person in the city. That was one of the reasons why he was relieved when he saw only two others in the platform, neither of whose eyesights were good enough to figure out who’s the very man in suits waiting for train at this very unholy hour.
Wondering if Jan texted him earlier, he quickly got his phone and checked. Nothing, not even a notification on Facebook. He felt that was strange, considering the fact that Jane Withers, his girlfriend for 6 months now, would normally text him while on road. Maybe it’s one of her days when she wakes up late , he thought to himself in Korean, before putting his phone back to his pocket.

A minute later, the train arrived at the platform. Like usual of trains at these hours, it was mostly empty, only occupied by some passengers. Once the doors were opened he entered, before sitting on a seat closest to him. He didn’t have to sit however, with Attawapiskat H station only 4 stops and 5 minutes away from Kâyâsiyâkan. At there, he had to pick a rookie named Jan Arne, off a fresh overnight train ride from Montreal.
Soo Myeon this year, had to deal with something that’d prove to be even more of a pain in the ass than just winning a cup. With franchise-record 7 rookies starting at the opener, the matter of accommodation became an issue. As a result, some were paired with veterans to live at one’s place for the first year, while the others lived with their family members or dormitories provided by University of Attawapiskat. Jan Arne was of former case, having to live with Soo Myeon and Raphael. This was of no surprise, for Soo Myeon spoke Czech fluently while Raphael knew the Vauganian culture and hockey very well. Others were not as lucky however: Dannick Prust got Jean-Sebastien Haidara, a father of 4 kids, while Otmar Martinek got a Polkopian metalhead named Paul Soving. Yikes.

...................................

5 minutes later the train stopped at Attawapiskat H station, and down went Soo Myeon Kim. He, knowing that the overnight Polar Bear Express service will arrive in about 5 minutes, quickly ran out of the A-train station and went to the QNR station out of hurry. I hope I’m not late, he said to himself as he made run for it.
Attawapiskat H’s QNR station was modernistic, having built in 1997 by an architect named Marco Orpik, son of a famous Quebecois architect named Henry Orpik. While it was a beautiful building with lots of artworks and good amenities, it unfortunately was too small for current service frequency. So it was no surprise when our very main was stuck in middle of the platform, surrounded by about thousand people of different ethnicities. He started to panic, hoping that he didn’t pick the right date, when he heard a shout towards him. ‘SMK!’ Somebody shouted his name. Instantly Soo Myeon turned, only to see Jan in short distance, wearing his Avalanche tracksuit, while carrying a huge bag and 2 large-sized suitcases. He looked fairly average for a defenseman, with 6’2 tall and 224 pounds. He had a short, brown hair and some light moustaches that made him look quite charismatic (OOC: think Erik Karlsson). That being said, Soo Myeon quickly went and hugged his 21-year old rookie for 5 seconds.

“Welcome to Attawapiskat, Mr. Arne.” Soo Myeon greeted him in Czech before asking, “How’s flight from Yzerberg and train ride all the way to here?"
“It was okay.” He responded, “I got to have some sleep on the flight because of all the farewell parties I got to have back in Yzerberg. Then I couldn’t fall asleep on the entire train ride, so I just played QHL 16(OOC: Obviously Quebecois version of the very famous NHL series on EA Sports) on my MyBook(OOC: Quebecois version of MacBook). I lost most of the games I played interface with my friends back home though. :(
That’s great to hear.”
He then took one of his luggages and said, “Let’s go, bud. To your new home, where you can get some sleep.”

"We're gonna do great with this cast of players! Beautiful plays, fantastic saves, gritty D!"

"Who are our players?"

"..."

"..."

"You just gave me a three-hour speech on how great this team is, but you...don't know who they are?"

"Oh, of course I do."

"Yes?"

"Well, the goalies are Billy Nelson, erm, Willie Nelson, and, Joe."

"Joe..."

"Nelson."

"So they're brothers."

"Brothers, yes."

"Billy is 6'9", heavyset, and blond, Willie is 5'2" and bald, and Joe is so thin I cannot perceive him from the side."

"Ha ha."

"But c'mon, I won't invest in them."

"But..."

"Plus, they're terrible."

"No they aren't! Beautiful defense! See this harmonic intertwining of-"

"Not again."

Four hours later

"I need somebody! This team will go bankrupt!"

"They are a mysterious bunch, and you know what? You're annoying me, Toddinlofer-"

"That's not my name."

"Fine, thatsnotmyname. But watch me demotivate them better than you ever could."

"Er, my name is Loddintofer."

"No, it's not! Your name tag says Buy1Get1Free."

"Oops. I knew that was the wrong tag."

"Well, watch. HOCKEY TEAM! YOU FILTHY LOAD OF ICE TIGERS! GET OVER HERE!"

"That wasn't too bad."

"I haven't even started."

The players got over here. "Let me take you out one by one and tell you the truth," he said.

He took Joe Nelson out. The man returned, eyes bloodshot, howling in pain.

The next man came out the same way.

And the next.

And the next.

And the next.

And the next.

And the next.

Eventually, they were all sobbing and howling on the floor.

"What did you do to them? Did you hurt them?"

"No, not physically."

"I'm tough. Do it to me," Toddinlofer said stupidly.

"Your job is to supervise bundles of chemicals hitting small round cylinders into larger nets."

"Yes. They are pretty large."

"If the solar system was projected on a 44-inch TV screen..."

"Sure."

"You'd have to magnify down to pixels to see the pale blue dot that we live on."

"Uh huh."

"And on that dot, compromising a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a fraction, is..."

"The net?"

"No. The city the hockey stadium is in, suburbs included."

"Sure."

"And this is the solar system, a dot in a dot in a dot in a dot of the galaxy, a dot in a dot in a dot in a dot of the universe."

"But we can understand the universe-"

"Then why are you supervising bundles of chemicals hitting small round cylinders into larger nets, and you can't even do it right?"

"I have value!"

"Are you married?"

"No."

"You, my sir, are a machine for doing other things that have no positive value upon the earth. You can't even influence a dot in a dot in a dot in a dot in a dot in a dot in a dot in a dot in a dot in a dot-"

He broke down howling and sobbing.

The Ice Falcons

Head Coach: Ignacio Pervia
Assistant Coach: Markus Obnik
Trainer: Mo'a Ni-tum

(# - Pos - Name - Age)
Forward Line 1
#57 LW Rudrick Hoer (24)
#01 C Aaran Ashby (33)
#34 RW Wilhelm von Üshter (36)

A little unusual for the primary line, these three specialize in pesterance and convoluted strategies. They run a quick, high-passing game meant to confuse and confound their foes and slip the puck by the goalie rather than power it through.

Forward Line 2
#25 LW Karl Woflshtag (32)
#05 C Gunter Ingelhommen (38)
#93 RW Albert Jair (23)

The complete opposite of the first line, Karl, Gunter and Albert run a slow and deliberate pressure game. Keep the puck on the other side of the court and kill time with passive possession until a gap arises, then bash through said gap and slam the puck at the goal with all possible force.

Forward Line 3
#11 LW Kyle Bosche (39)
#00 C Constantine Volproppos (42)
#76 RW Hank Boone (41)

What some may call a line of fossils, we call a line of experience. Though none of the players are as sprite and lithe as they were in their youth, they know hockey inside and out. The name of the game here is exploiting younger, inexperienced opponents, leading them into traps and forcing them into gambits any seasoned player would avoid in an instant. Bosche is still a star despite his age, and can still score with the best of them.

Forward Line 4
#16 LW Frederik Daecher (19)
#07 C Heinrick Klein (22)
#03 RW Ci-ga Iwa'oa (20)

A strictly backup line drawn from Falconwhereveryouare's youth hockey leagues. Defensively-minded, as they mostly just eat minutes to give the other lines a breather. Ci-ga does have a penchant for dramatic late-game goals, though.

Defensive Pair 1
#65 LD Franz McClain (35)
#56 RD Josiah Adler (28)

Solid defenders who rarely cross to the other half of the ice; their job is to get the puck to the forward line as quick as possible then set up for possible enemy counters.

Defensive Pair 2
#45 LD Drew Schott (40)
#54 RD Damian Jones (33)

Strong, burly guys who can really intimidate others. Work in tandem with FL2 and FL3 to really wear down opponents.

Defensive Pair 3
#78 LD Payne Aldrich (37)
#87 RD Turis von Guelch (35)

Just a pair of regulars. Do their job, not much else.

Goalies
#04 Jeremy Scherzer (33)
#08 Claude Moerest (36)
#12 Ignacio Valentine (27)

Scherzer is the starter, an average goalie; Moerest is another average goalie, used to give Scherzer a rest; and Valentine is a slightly below average goalie but can attack effectively when pulled out of the net.

Fights are unlikely, but if you must have one, they'd be ignited by the guys in FL2 and DP2. Others won't fight unless provoked.

This goes with the song Civil War by Guns N’ Roses

What we’ve got here is a Group 12 preview
Some teams you just can’t reach….
So, you get what we had last cycle, which is the way The Royal Barangay wants it.
Well, he gets it.
N’ We don’t like it any more than you.

Look at the Torisakia team fighting
Look at the Nova Anglicana team crying
Look at the Crystal Empire team dying
The way they’ve always done before.

Look at the hate HopNation’s breeding
Look at the fear HopNation’s feeding
Look at the lives HopNation’s leading
They way we’ve always done before

My stick is taped
The puck shifts from side to side
And the games go on with Hoptonian pride
For the love of Hockey and the game we play
And all the slap shots are swept aside
By bloody faces time can’t deny
And are washed away by end game showers
And The Royal Barangay hides the lies of our Hockey Game.

D’you wear a captains band
When they scored on the man
Who said, “Games don’t last forever”
And in my first game
They shot a goal
An’ I went numb when I learned the score
So I never fell to Flammable American States.
We got the Group to remind us all
That you can’t trust the puck
When it’s not at your stick
When everybody’s fightin’
For their glorious win

And
We really want your trophy
It rewards the good while it trashes the bad
Your power plays sealin’ games
In a frozen hockey rink
Ain’t that cold
We really want your trophy

Look at New South Aqmuland we’re beating
Look at Crystal Empire’s blood spilling
Look at HopNation we’re winning
The way we’ve always done before
Look in the doubt Torisakia wallowed
Look at the leaders Nova Anglicana followed
Look at the lies Flammable American States swallowed
And we don’t want to lose no more.

Our skates are sharp
For all we’ve seen has changed our mind
But still the games go on as the groups go by
With no love of Hockey or the game we play
‘Cause all their dreams are swept aside
By bloody faces of the Crystal Empire
Who carry the stick of a losing side
And the teams will bear the scares of games gone by

“We practice selective groupings of teams and nations
For example to create a tournament
Then we fill that tournament
As popular teams advance
The winner is closer”

We really want your trophy
It rewards the good while it trashes the bad
Your power plays sealin’ games
In a frozen hockey rink
Ain’t that cold
And We really want your trophy
We really want your trophy
We really want your trophy
Your power plays sealin’ games
In a frozen hockey rink
Ain’t that cold
We really want your trophy
We really want our first trophy

We really want your trophy
What’d be great is us winning anyway

Tommy's Blog

Hello! I'm Murvin Alexander, back from the dead! Yes, yes I am reincarnated, except this time as part robot. You know, that mad-dog stuff. I think you know what I mean. Anyway, as you know it was our plan to make it to at least fourth place and-would you believe it, it already happened while I was dead? I-I don't believe it, I really don't! I think I should sue the pants off of the government, uh I mean, send them a nice postcard with three quarters in it. Anyway, I was lucky enough to come back right as the next World Cup of Hockey started and Torisakia sitting in a comfy, seventh place. Are they?

Right, I just looked it up and Torisakia is sitting at #7 in the rankings. HA! And we did it without Cassidy? We-we didn't? WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT?! Speaking of Cassidy, I forgot to mention that I didn't get the electric chair because of what I said about her tits. It was because I had some unpaid debts that I forgot about, and that was that. While I'm on the topic of the players, we have a new squad this year. According to my intel, we traded Alexei to some hockey league in a foreign land. Huh. Mathias went missing in the Berawin Besar Mountains, never to be found again. Kevin got arrested for helping Harrybo hide from the police in his attic. Dontknowaboutthat. So, three new players on the starting line this year. The new goalie Issac Ramos, 35 year old who played for South Bohan, is-what is there to say about goalies. Idunno. So that was that. New right defense man Jonathan Lewis, 32 year old from Tokai City, looks promising, then again I said the same about Cassidy in her first year. Huh. Finally, new right wing forward Jason Junkins, 19 year old pretty-boy who played for Tokai United, I smell a love triangle with Cassidy and Kristen. Maybe make that goofball from Gyatso-kai who stalked Cassidy back ago jealous? Fair enough.

Torisakia sits this time around in Group 12, along with (30) Nova Anglicana, (53) Hop Nation, (62) Crystal Empire, and newbies Flammable American States and New South Aqmuland. This has to be the easiest group ever for Torisakia. Not a single threat to them. HA! Would you look at that. But then again, we do have Cassidy on the team, so that can get things a bit mucked up, especially that heinerscmatlz Jason Junkins gets involved with her. I think you know what I mean. Yes, anyway I'm glad to be back in the world! Especially with the new robotic right side of my body. Fantastic! I hope this time you all in the comments will be good and well-behaved, hm?

Comments:
1. wally: Murvin? Whaaaat?
2. Cisco: Murvin's back! YESSSS!
3. DaThings: Murvin the Cyborg? I'll take it!
4. Fuse2813: He might have just predicted the love triangle. Holy plums.

46. CassidyMcKenzieOfficial: Glad to have you back Murvin. This time, try to keep the talk of my body to a minimum. If you can do that, we'll be great friends.
47. qbalt: I don't get it, is the entire right half of his body robotic?
48. hockeymask17: @qbalt I believe so. How does he shower?
49. DylanCliff: @hockeymask17 Maybe his robot parts are waterproof. CONSPIRACY!
...
98. Murvin: @CassidyMcKenzieOfficial, Thanks, Cassidy. I'll try my best not to. Althought it'll be hard since I'm going to every game.
99. TinyRocks: I'm hoping those damn spammers don't show up again. Remember? "Hand" and "Thumb"?
100. Diamontisse: @TinyRocks More than likely they'll come back.

Estope Sports Network World Headquarters, Twin Brooks -

"Hey Bob, it's that time of year again. The World Cup of Hockey is starting back up and the executives want you to cover it."

"No, no! Please anything else! I did it last year, I think it is someone else's turn!"

"But you did great last year. We were looking at the numbers and there was a record viewers for hockey when you were covering it. 142 whole viewers, wow! There is no one who does what you do Bob. And look on the bright side, the games are home and home so half the time you'll be in Estope and the other half you'll get to see the world."

"I know absolutely nothing about hockey though. And what about Cindy? She did it last year."

"Fake it. The executives want you to try and drill up some more support for the team since you did so good last year. And you're on in 3..2..1"

"Good evening everyone. Thank you for tuning in to ESN 14, the fourteenth best channel to watch all your favorite sports. I'm your host of the Nightly Recap, Bob Grater. It's that time of the year again. The World Cup of Hockey is upon us again. I know it seems like it just ended and none of you care but I am contractually obligated to inform you of this. Beginning May 25th I will be traveling with the team to cover them live each step of the way on their path to a championship. This year, for the first time ever, Estope received the number one seed in their group. The 14th ranked Estope hockey team will square off in Group 8 against #22 Vaugania, #33 Aquitayne, #72 Jeckland, and a couple of unranked nations in SJT and Muriburiland. I can't wait to see how this all shakes out. Now in more important news and what I will discuss in full detail for the remaining hour and fifty-five minutes of our show is the fantastic baseball game that went on today in the World Baseball Classic..."

Groups Set for WCoH24
Jane Van Dorn -- ROYAL BARANGAY

The groups have been set - and if the Anditon Wolverines want to come out of everything without creating an international incident on their hands, they have the toughest draw amongst all others. The reason we say this is because of the pairing of Gregorisgodistan with Anditia in Group 11. The aptly named "Ice Slaves" headed by the ruthless coach Horse Beater LAL9120 has been known to destroy opponents on the ice, both figuratively and literally. During the last WCoH, the Ice Slaves finished group play with a 6-3-0 record, losing during the first round of playoffs to Gyatso-Kai.
Schedule
@. Britonisea
v. Kytler Pen.
@. Gregoryisgodistan
v. Darmen
@. Esparmuran
v. Britonisea
@. Kytler Pen.
v. Gregoryisgodistan
@. Darmen
v. Esparmuran
Along with the Gregoryisgodistani, the Wolverines will face against Darmen, a team ranked higher than the Wolverines, but not well known for much on the rink, aside from a decently high scoring offense lead by Todd Dupuis and Trent Gaborik. The two, hope to better the Darmen outcome from the previous WCoH where they finished 6-0-3, barely missing advancement to the next round. Darmen and Gregoryisgodistan happened to be paired together during the last WCoH as well - potentially allowing the Anditon team to sneak-up while these two rivals beat eachother senseless. Rounding out Group 11 is Britonisea, well known in other sporting venues but a new comer to Ice Hockey, The Kytler Peninsulae, a virtual unknown and Esparmuran a country who apparently believes whole heartedly in vacationing.

With the top two teams advancing through to the next round of the playoffs, the odds are definitely stacked against the Wolverines, but with the improvement over last year and the general speed change that we have seen in their playing style with the addition of rookies Jimmy Boef and Brent Fumar, we should have a chance to make waves in the international hockey community. We fully expect that all games will be contentious and that the referees will be lousy at best (as they always are in any type of playoff atmosphere). Still, we figure that the Anditon team will result in a strong showing on the ice resulting in a record that will be teetering on the edge of advancement to the playoffs.

Thus, our prediction is that the Wolverines will finish with a 6-2-2 record, losses coming from the Ice Slaves (1) and Darmen (1), ties coming from two of the other teams.

WCoH 24 Preview- Squads

Norrehavn, for the first time, is submitting its national team to play at its first ever WCoH. But of course, not everyone on Multiverse knows our team and players very well. So, here are some information and what to expect of them!

Offense: Norrish offense has a very strange gap between the youngsters and elderly veterans, due to the lack of high-quality talent between them. So they'll have to gap that and use the enormous talent and prospects they have, in order to break out this season.
Top line is an exact example. Radek Vrbata is a streaky scorer whose best days are clearly behind, but still have enough skills to be a top-line asset. Stephen Chang, on the other hand, is a young power forward whose leadership roles and defensive awareness have gotten him a spot in top line and captaincy. Not to mention his excellent season that ended with the Prenneau Cup Championships. Jonas Bergstrom is a frustrating, electric centre who is expected to do better under free-flowing Ehlers' run-and-gun system. Second line is marked by the star sniper in the form of Kristians Jevpalovs, who recorded 41 goals and 84 points in his fourth season with Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. Emil Sorensen is a defensively aware centre who is starting to score more and more, while Joseph Franzen is a streaky scorer who somehow manages his way into clutch plays when needed. Bjorn Vintersen looks to be the top-line centre for Team Norrehavn in years to come, but for now he'll centre the third line in a defensive role, with linemates Mattias Kirkendalls and Clyde Matteau. Dynamic duo of Vaclav Nedomansky and Anton Fiala are another whose prospects are high, but still needs more years and playing experience(especially in upcoming years when they'll play in QHL) to develop as stars. Overall, they'll score lots of goals and have some dazzling plays for your highlight-lovers' sake.

Defense: This is the part I'm worried the most about. Norrish defense looks fairly thin and drastic: Outside of Ryan Eller the team does not boast any high-calibre defensemen who can eat up minutes. Marian Kostalek is a smooth skater with great offensive capabilities, as we have all seen it in his 57 point season at Rimouski this year, but he still needs some defensive help to offset his defensive weaknesses. Rick Sersen is the best defenseman in Norrehavnese Extraliga, but he is infamous for his extreme inability to score. Milan Nedved used to be a great defenseman back in Halifax(1994-1999), Attawapiskat(1999-2004) and Gaspe(2004-2009), but he's too old to play 15+ minutes team expect out of him, while Naga Konstantin's a promising rookie but still a rookie. He still needs more time to be effective as he is projected to be. In addition to to a fairly weak squad, the typical style of play Coach Ehlers employs is not the one that puts an emphasis on defensive play and keeping puck possession, so it'd be much harder for them to control the number of shots against. Don't expect defensive play to shine for this year.

Goaltenders: It is clear from what we have seen what the coaching staff expects out of Vaclav Pavelec. Pavelec, who's drafted 10th overall by Gander Jets, had a stellar season in which he had posted 8 Shutouts for Cape Breton Screaming Eagles as he led them into their first ever Memorial Cup Championship since they joined QMJHL system in 1968.
With excellent techniques, flexibility and mind to read the games, he is certainly expected to carry the team forward. Is this too much for the 19-year old however? That, we'll have to see. If it's too much, Dan Erhat(a former QHLer who used to play in Iqaluit) can take over. He's clearly not the one to carry the team to playoffs, but at least will serve as a good patch for the time being.

Overview: The team looks fairly solid, with excellent group of young and old forwards alike, guaranteeing us that there'll be lots of goals coming out of this team. This cannot be said the same to defense however, due to the relative inexperience of some players and us lacking some pieces for a solid defense to complement its offensive capabilities. Thus, expect 30+ shots to be aimed at either Pavelec or Erhat, who will be facing tasks of their own. Will this team make out of group stage alive? Well, we'll see about that.

REPUBLIC CITY --- Chu Zhu Li

Group 7

MD1 vs URBorschlandia
MD2 vs 31Quakmybush
MD3 at 37Arkiasis
MD4 vs URSemarland
MD5 at URKorva
MD6 at URBorschlandia
MD7 at 31Quakmybush
MD8 vs 37Arkiasis
MD9 at URSemarland
MD10 vs URKorva

Here at the National Sports Council, we have been just given the Group Stage line-up for the Avatarian Men's National Ice Hockey team in the upcoming World Cup of Hockey XXIV. In addition to this line up, we have also been given the home venues for each game that will be played in Gyatso-kai during the double-round robin style of this World Cup.

While many groups are filled with four ranked teams, Gyatso-kai seemed to have drawn an 'interesting' Group, in that there are only three teams in Group Seven that are ranked; fourth-ranked Gyatso-kai, thirty-first-ranked Quakmybush, and thirty-seventh-ranked Arkiasis. Even that is not exactly heart-warming; both Quakmybush and Arkiasis have had far-less-than-stellar performances in their World Cup of Hockey histories.

This may be the easiest World Cup the Ice Bisons have ever been in...

Borschlandia
Matchdays: MD1 on HOME ice, MD6 on AWAY ice
Rank: Unranked

A team which has yet to be seen on the multiverse stage, the Borschland Swans are facing the Ice Bisons on the first Matchday. With the blessings of "the fathers of the Borschland Hockey League," the Swans will bring their style of hockey to the Sundari Times Forum. While little is known about the Swans, what is known as that they are a perennial contestant and victor of the 'Continental Cup, a tournament we have never heard of. With a style of -3, the Swans will likely play a game by holding the puck and waiting for the right moment, while keeping a decent lock on their own zone. Rinks in Borschland are larger than the North American rinks of the National Hockey League --- which are slightly smaller than our own rinks --- and their style of play seems to lack the physical aspects so common in hockey... or in other words, their players are a bunch of little di'kute who are too scared to drop their gloves in the name of their nation.

Expect a decent game in front of the 19,000-plus fans who will likely be in attendance for the opening match of the World Cup of Hockey.

Quakmybush
Matchdays: MD2 on HOME ice, MD7 on AWAY ice
Rank: 31st

The first ranked opponent of the Ice Bisons shall play their second match of the tournament at the fabled Trible Sadledome, home to the AHL's Southern PolarLeopards. While Quakmybush is ranked, in World Cup of Hockey XXIII, they ended their Qualifying round 2-2-5, with only 8pts and a -9 goal differential: The only victories achieved by Quakmybush were a 2-1 nail-biter over Lzherusskia and 1-nil over San Jose Guayabal, and their largest defeat came on the second day with a 6-1 beating given by Havl.

A neutral style of play in the last World Cup edition didn't seem to work too well for the Quakmybush, so we can expect them to come into this edition with a more-determined style of play indicitative of a team that wants to advance beyond just a pair of victories.

Arkiasis
Matchdays: MD3 on AWAY ice, MD8 on HOME ice
Rank: 37th

The Akiasis Wolves, while slightly lower-ranked than Quakmybush, they seemed to be the only real threat to the Ice Bisons in the Group Stage. Coming from a nation where hockey is the "unofficial religion and pastime", the Wolves look to bring their highly offensive-style of play to the World Cup. Famous for a 10-1 beating from the Equestrian States that embarassed the Wolves in World Cup XXII --- a tournament the Ice Bisons did not compete in ---, they slightly improved their 4-0-8 record in World Cup XXII to a 2-3-4 record in World Cup XXIII with a pair of single-goal victories.

While the third game of the tournament will be played at the Windspear Arena in Eaton, Vesperia, Arkiasis before 18,000 fans, the eighth game will return to Gyatso-kai where it will be played at The Capital Centre in Republic City.

Semarland
Matchdays: MD4 on HOME ice, MD9 on AWAY ice
Rank: Unranked

The last two unranked opponents in Group Seven for the Ice Bisons starts off with Semarland, who are another new edition to the realm of multiverse hockey. A relatively young team, with an average age of 23.4, the Semarlandic team should be a rather interesting team to face, as the Ice Bisons return to the Sundari Times Forum for the fourth game of the World Cup series.

Korva
Matchdays: MD5 on AWAY ice, MD10 on HOME ice
Rank: Unranked

The Empire of Korva Stags will play host to the Ice Bisons, as they travel to the Bank of Korva Center and play before 20,000 fans in the city of New Constantine. With a +1 style of play, the Korvan team is known to prize a highly technical style of play, in which prowess with the puck is more important than the strength of the gloves behind the punches. An excited nation --- rightfully so due to this being the nation's first participation in an multiverse sporting event ---, the National Sports Council has opted to host the last Matchday of the Round Robin Group Stage at the Tribal Saddledome to accommodate the most fans.

Home Arenas

Image

Official Name: Sundari Times Forum
Local Name: The Forum
Seating Capacity: 19,950
Location: Sundari, Southern Mandalorian Territories, Mandalore, Gyatso-kai
Games to be Played Here: Matchday 1, Matchday 4

The Sundari Times Forum is a larger-than-average arena in in the Southern Mandalorian TErritories; seating just under 20,000 fans, the eight-time Kuruk Cup Champions are certainly a show of force within the League and their fans are known as the most compassionate and dedicated fans in the entire league. Considering the fact that this team has yet to even celebrate a 20-year Anniversary, there is only great history to be made by the Itakawai Lightning.

Image

Official Name: The Capital Centre
Local Name: The Centre
Seating Capacity: 20,950
Location: Republic City, Capital Administrative Territory, Avatarian Republics of Gyatso-kai
Games to be Played Here: Matchday 8

The Capital Centre is a more modest arena when compared to the other arenas in the division, seating just under 21,000 fans in the most posh of settings. Home to the Republic Capitals an incredibly wealthy team in which many of the most dedicated fans are served fresh caviar and fed sparkling wine through guilded funnels, the Capital Centre reflects this opulence in its design. All kidding aside, the fans of the Caps are slightly better behaved than most Avatarian Fans, so the Arkiasis Wolves will certainly be playing in front of a spirited group of fans.

Image

Official Name: Tribal Saddledome
Local Name: The Saddle
Seating Capacity: 28,350
Location: Augnuook, Southern Water Tribes, Water Tribes, Gyatso-kai
Games to be Played Here: Matchday 2, Matchday 10

Home to the Southern PolarLeopards, the Tribal Saddledome --- much like the Ice Palace of the BuffaloYaks --- seats 28,350 dedicated fans in what is arguably the most comfortable arena in the Antpolar circle. With the surrounding air reaching -20 during the season, while ‘warmer’ than the North, the hardened fans of the Southern Water Tribe will trek to the Tribal Saddledome and chant on their team, win or lose. If the Quakmybushian and Korvan can dare to venture into the frigid cold, they will be greeted by some of toughest fans in the AHL.
