WCoH Predictions and Bets- Round of Sixteen

Georges Lecavalier
14th of February, 2016

Sangti-THE ROYAL BARANGAY- Round of 24's now over, with its share of kisses and goodbyes. Now with the number of teams in contention just 16 out of record-number 72 teams, series of puck drops in The Royal Barangay will mark the beginning of a three-day process that'll determine who'll make the cut to the Quarterfinals. Here are my guesses and current betting rate at Royal Montreal Casino!

Neu Engellon vs. Vilita&Turori
Betting rate: Neu Engellon- -$90, Vilita&Turori: +$110
This is a much harder one than what people would expect out of a matchup between #1 vs. #22. The series features two teams of totally different circumstances and results. Neu Engellon lacks the experience, but was dominant in what was a weak group that had no other competition aside from Ko-oren. Vilita&Turori, on the other hand, entered the tournament with #5 in latest WCoH rankings, as well as experience. The Ice Cat Things, on the other hand, didn't do that well in their standard. They were easily outplayed by dark horse #21 Royal Kingdom of Quebec, and struggled defensively and lacked consistency suffering three defeats over the 10 match haul.

This, as well as the seeding-element behind it, makes this series such a thriller. Will Vilita&Turori prove that they're not out of it by sending their opponents home or will Neu Engellon prove the World that they're here for good? This one will be tough, but my money will be on Neu Engellon in three tightly-contested games.

Havl vs Vaugania
Betting rate: Havl- -$75, Vaugania- +$130
Havl certainly didn't look as dominant as they have been, allowing lot more goals than the Rich era, as well as allowing some key mistakes that had them unexpectedly tying two games. But at the same time their offensive depth greatly improved, something that can be attributed to the improvements in developing high-calibre players, rather than just relying on their stars. That's something that Vaugania struggled with the tournament. Their defense was weak and lacking depth, and offensive core was largely inconsistent on key games. If they're going to expect Raphael Roux or Craig Howard to bail them out almost every game, they will be doomed. Havl in 2.

Estope vs Ko-oren
Betting rate: Estope- +$110, Ko-oren- -$85
A battle between two teams of extremes, with both teams possessing a defensively-oriented system. They are only a place away from each other when it comes to rankings, but had to face so many obstacles on the way. Former enters the series as the third-seeded team and therefore got the precious bye, while the latter had to face Gyatso-Kai in what was a very draining series for them. By logic considering the games the Dragonflice played, the former should be able to crush the latter. That won't be the case here though. Estope simply doesn't have the fire and grit of the Ko-orenite, as well as the latter's ability to make clutch plays when one struggled. They are like the Armada: Dominant on regular season(or in this case, group stage), but doesn't have what it takes to win. I expect Dragonflice to win in 2 closely contested games.

Northern Sunrise Islands vs Falcus
Betting rate: Northern Sunrise Islands- -$90, Falcus- +$115
There were not enough information on our front, but my guess goes to Northern Sunrise, for its superior ranking and fantastic group stage. Don't expect them to progress further than Quarterfinals, due to their inability to go further in the playoff stage.

Royal Kingdom of Quebec vs The Fair Republic
Betting rate: Royal Kingdom of Quebec- -$75, The Fair Republic- +$130
This is what people would expect as a really easy series, but should end in ease. Royal Kingdom of Quebec had a very successful tournament in which they had a great rebound after a failure in which their time was mauled by awful refereeing and horrible on-ice conditions at all of their games(all the way back in Saintland). They have a very good offensive corps that can score at its win, while its other two corps are there with some success. The Fair Republic, on the other hand, may looks to be strong with its 56 goals scored, but at the same time they didn't look that dominant against Equestrian States or any powerhouse team in its past history. Considering their placement in what was an extremely weak Group 6, this was disappointing. Royal Kingdom of Quebec in 2 easy games.

Equestrian States vs Gregoryisgodistan
Betting rate: Equestrian States- +$110, Gregoryisgodistan- -$90
Ooh, I smell some blood as I read this matchup. The former's well known for being the sole dominating nation with ponies and Pegasi, with offensive firepower. The latter, on the other hand, has bunch of pervert chasers, prison guards, enemy crushers and the nutjob of the head coach in the form of Horse Beater LAL9120. They on the other hand, possesses an excellent defense, which isn't that surprising consider how many players they have, who are employed in a profession that requires beating someone. They also knew how to step up when they needed to, winning their Ro24 Game 3 with an epic goal.

This should be a close series, but by the grace of their Lord Almighty Gregory, they should be able to neutralise the magic the Windigos possess and win the series with some challenges. It's just that the latter knows how to step up when needed, as well as Mighty Stone Wall in the form of Enemy Crusher Franky "Fatso" McFattel.

Sicoutimont vs Arkiasis
Betting rate: Sicoutimont- +$105, Arkiasis- -$90
Not enough information on either sides, but Arkiasis like it's another rising power, beating Gyatso-Kai once and doing pretty well on what was a top-heavy Group 7. I expect them to pull big time, and win in 3.

Valanora vs Torisakia
Betting rate: Valanora- +$125, Torisakia- -$75
This is a battle between veterans, one on rise and other on decline. Vanorians, despite winning their division, haven't been the team that used to dominate on-ice, so often. They have the experience, but seem as if they can't continue their legacy on playoffs. On the other hand, Torisakia looked as if they're back to their WCoH 22 form, when they placed fourth in what was a fantastic tournament for them. They looked shaky at times, but still knew when to pull clutch moves in what was an extremely contentious Group 12.
This is a slight challenge, but I think Torisakia will pull this off in 2. Ice Birds know how to make big in playoffs and should be able to do so, by starting with this win.

In Conclusion

Overall, most of the series seems to have clear favourites to win, which most will do so because of obvious reasons that were mentioned earlier(OOC: RPing plays a huge role in my OOCly and ICly decisions behind this). Some bets are expected to be too risky to bet, such as Havl-Vaugania, Royal Kingdom of Quebec-The Free Republic and Valanora-Torisakia, while others were lot closer due to what the teams hold right now in their cards, namely Gregoryisgodistan and Equestrian States.
That being said, I wish you readers the best of your betting luck and may the best win, fair and square.

"You would think that despite being rated as the second best nation in the world, favored to win the tournament, and having won our group, the media would be giving the Calcuttas some more attention. I know that the nation is still pretty drunk off of winning the AOCAF, but the Calcuttas are doing their best to represent the nation in the World Cup of Hockey as well. How many media groups are granted rights to the World Cup? Like fourteen right? How many even apply for the World Cup of Hockey?" Faeron Mathathdil said to his friend, as they prepared to watch the first match of the Calcuttas in their knockout series.

"I don't know, I think four or five. The Valanora Times usually sends a reporter or two and the EPB usually picks up the Vanorian games." The friend said with a shrug, feeling less than inclined to have yet another discussion about how there was a media bias within the nation when it came to sports. Ice Hockey still was prevalent in Valanora, so he did not know what his friend was on about.

"Of course the Times are going to send a reporter, they are sort of obligated to as the premier media outlet in the nation and being in league with the government. All that public funding means they have to at least show an interest in any of the competitions that the VSC decides to send a national team to, but what about the independent ones and the lesser known outlets? Nothing, nadda, zip! It is a shame, though I should have come to expect it by now, the last decade or so has been this way. Even with the EHL relaunch, the domestic game is fun and all, but without money from a competition like the UICA, it's mostly just practice for the national team." Faeron sighed, taking his glass of wine and downing it with ease.

"Well that is not the fault of the media nor the VSC, it is the fault of those who were running the HCL or CHL, whatever you want to call it. It kept ending up in an organizational mess, no one really wanting to organize it, you can't put the blame on the media for that." Neenia replied back, hoping to shush Faeron for the evening and just enjoy the game about to come on.

"Well, maybe the VSC could perhaps bid for the next World Cup of Hockey, show their really is support, not just the token support like they give to the Olympic delegation and collegiate activities. You remember the time when the national team and clubs were the best in the world right? Granted, the football teams were as well. *sigh* That was such a glorious time for Valanora, our glory seems to have faded in multiple areas."

"Glory only fades if you let it, I mean, look the Marauders won the AOCAF, a feat they had never done before. So the Calcuttas can come back strong from the lethargy that has been plaguing them the last decade or so as well, it just takes a bit of luck. If any sport can have luck turn on its head is hockey, with an odd bounce out of the corner or one of the goalies just getting amazingly hot. What's to say that can't happen for the Calcuttas? So can you just relax and try to enjoy the game for once instead of all the complaining? Geez." She took her own drink and took a long swig from it, looking at Faeron with a bit of contempt in her eyes. He just needed to unwind and enjoy life a bit.

"Yeah, okay, relax and enjoy the game. Hard when you have so much passion, though I am kind of worried. Torisakia are a very good team and the Calcuttas may not be up to snuff."

"Second in the world, you said it yourself. Now drink your wine, eat your nachos, and relax."

WCoH 24: Apparently We're Still Competing

SOMEWHERE, The Royal Barangay - It's probably accurate to say that ice hockey isn't the most popular sport in the Equestrian States. In fact, it may be among the least popular sports here with a so-called "major" international tournament. Back a few years ago, the Equestrian States even hosted said competition in the hopes of increasing Equestrian sports fans' exposure to the sport and its culture. Needless to say, that attempt at improving ice hockey's popularity failed rather miserably. As a result, many top Equestrian players are now leaving the domestic league en masse for greener pastures abroad where they might get a mediocre amount of respect for their generally decent abilities.

Anyways, the World Cup of Hockey. We're still in it... somehow. And apparently we're seeded rather highly thanks to a pretty good group stage. Will we advance from the Round of 16? Probably not. Gregistan or whatever that nation we're playing is pretty good, probably better than us, and should get an easy couple of wins. But hey, maybe we'll get lucky and score a goal or two.

"Low Seed" Ice Cat Things Lone Survivor

The Vilita & Turori Ice Cat Things National Hockey team continued their quest for a first ever World Cup of Hockey championship with an upset victory over Cassadaigua in the second round, making up for a mixed record against the ladies in pink during World Cup of Hockey 23.

After a thrilling Overtime victory in the opening matchup, Vilita & Turori out-scored the Dagans 5-4 on the ice before netting a series-clinching empty netter to complete the 2-0 sweep of their rival foes.

Cassadaigua had started brightly in the must win second match for them, running out to an early 2-0 lead. However, the match frequently ebbed and flowed and a tense 3rd period started with the scores level at 4 a piece. Avalan Marcraw's men broke the deadlock midway through the period when Alikki-Corra's Cinnami Vellamoi smashed a slap shot from the point off the body of Yeaddin's Ieeko Nareta, redirecting it into the net for the go-ahead goal. Vellamoi would be the one to ice the game with 19 seconds to play hitting the empty net from deep in the Vilita & Turori zone.

The Ice Cat things would be the only surviving 'Low Seed' to advance from the second round. Despite entering the tournament as the 5th ranked team in the multiverse, the below-par performance in the qualifying round dropped Vilita & Turori to the 21st seed in the knockout rounds. Now, the Ice-Cat things are the only team in the final 16 seeded outside the top 16, and as such, have been 'rewarded' with a Round of 16 matchup against the top seeded Neu Engollon Ibex.

Not to be confused with the Ibexian foes that Vilita & Turori are used to face on a regional level in Atlantian Oceania, the Neu Engollon Ibex are a relatively unknown factor for the Ice-Cat things who will try to benefit from their 'underdog' status despite the fact that they still appear 11 spots above the Ibex in the latest International Hockey Rankings.

The Ice-Cat things coaching staff have been gifted the luxury of having 2 extra matches of 'gel' time leading up to the Round of 16, and will treasure the luxury of entering the round of 16 as the lowest seed, and thereby, and underdog, despite the level of talent clearly residing in their lineup that earned them a top-seed position in the group stage.

The best of 3 series with Neu Engollon will kick off at the Arena Nacional in Sangti with Yeaddin HC's Fiko Oreta expected to start in goal for Vilita & Turori

A Horrible Soap Opera That Involves Ice Hockey
Epsisode 4: "The Writers Were Killed During the Blackout"

Dear Viewers,

This is going to be very hard to tell the 11 of you, but you deserve to know what has happened. As you may have noticed, there haven't been any episodes of "A Horrible Soap Opera That Involves Ice Hockey" the past few nights. Rest assured, your favorite show and ours has not been cancelled. It's had the best ratings of any show we've featured here on SoapyTV, now the 685th most popular channel of all time here in Vaugania if you don't count the illegal porn channels.

But that's beside the point. Tragedy has struck us here at SoapyTV. A few days ago in Sorochuk, the bodies of all of the writers for "AHSOTIIH" were found in a dumpster. Due to the discovery of multiple stab and slash wounds, it is believed that the writers were murdered. It is truly a sad time for SoapyTV and all fans of SoapyTV. Along with the bodies, several jars of lutefisk were spilled in the dumpster and krumkake crumbs were found on the clothing of the writers. Several strands of vibrant thread, possibly from a sweater, were also found, but it is still unclear whether or not these objects have any connection to the deaths.

Also, the actors playing Olli, Sven, and Knut left their jobs under unrelated circumstances. So we also found ourselves in need of new actors.

After opening these positions to the public, we managed to find replacements in a timely manner. The roles for Olli, Knut, and Sven have all been filled and we now have a dedicated team of 8 writers. Let's welcome the 11 newest members of our team:

Thorvald Ljoekelsoey - Sven
Gudbrand Mikkelspass - Knut
Øystein Skjölsvold - Olli
Florine Alacoque - Head Writer
Aimee Vivant - Writer
Sacha Villevielle - Writer
Amelie Demercastel - Writer
Marcellette Girardin - Writer
Fabienne Mirabeau - Writer
Danielle Boulais - Writer
Laurentine Lafenestre - Writer

These people are just as dedicated to the show as you are! Let's get this show back on the road! Seriously. I don't get paid if there's nothing airing.

Round of 16 Game 1

The Dragonflice leave the stadium in Nespa for the first time, and they left with a victory. Estope lost 2-0 after goals by Vasiliev and Garagun, both in the second period. Ko-oren upheld the defense magnificently throughout the game, and it took several fouls by the Estope team and the following powerplays for the Dragonflice to get close to Worrel. Telain missed a big chance for 3-0 at the end of the second period, when Worrel left his goal to help his team push for a 1-2. Tachibana missed a similar chance in the third period, when the Estopeans desperately tried to break the Ko-orenite wall. Needless to say, they did not make it through. GamblingQuebec.com was right, at least for the first game: a close game, won by the Dragonflice. Tomorrow we will cover another game of Ko-oren v. Estope, and a win gives our team to relax for a day after five solid days of playing Estope and Gyatso-kai. A loss means that the Dragonflice will get no day off in between now and the next round, provided we make it that far.

All other Round of 24 teams were not as lucky as us: the top eight seeds all (except one) won their games, even Valanora set Torisakia aside (2-1 on shootouts after 1-1). Arkiasis continued their stream of huge scores, but this time they were on the receiving side of things: Sicoutimont scored six to win 6-1. Even Neu Engollon, still undefeated, beat Vilita and Turori on shootouts. Despite their #1 seeding, the Ice Cat Things are arguably the favorites, just because of sheer experience and having the better team (on paper). Havl, one of the perpetual favorites to win the WCoH, won 3-1 against Vaugania.

As far as the highest seeds winning is concerned: it looks like this round has been void of upsets, but that is not the case. On paper, some of the winning teams definitely have been worse, but there is a big difference between being better on paper and winning. Most of the top seeds are simply continuing their great streak from the group stage, and it is up to the tired Round of 24-teams to break their spririts and advance. And the Dragonflice have been doing a great job at that.

Horse Beater LAL9120 Arrested for Making Threats, Assault, Weapons Possession

Gregoryisgodistan hockey coach Horse Beater LAL9120 was arrested before last night's game against the Equestrian States after publicly brandishing weapons and making threats against the Equestrian States hockey team. In a news conference, Horse Beater LAL9120 wielded a mace, a baseball bat, a pistol, a whip, a machete, a hockey stick, and a plank of wood and screamed "I WILL BE THE HORSE BEATER! I WILL BEAT THE EQUESTRIAN STATES LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY" before demonstrating just how he would literally beat the Equestrian States on a slave. He hit the slave with the mace five times, then whacked him over the head with the baseball bad seven times, pistolwhipped him nine times, hit him eleven times with the whip, whacked him six times with the machete, smacked him eight times with the hockey stick, and finally beat him with the plank of wood until it snapped in two. By that point, the slave was bleeding and unconscious on the floor. Royal Barangay police then moved in and arrested Horse Beater LAL9120 and took him away as he screamed "I AM THE HORSE BEATER!!!!!!!"

Elementary School Teacher KS9193 was interim head coach for the game against the Equestrian States, which the Ice Slaves lost in a shootout by a score of 4-3. The Ice Slaves now trail the best-of-3 series 1-0 and Horse Beater LAL9120 is still being held in prison. Elementary School Teacher KS9193 will act as head coach until Horse Beater LAL9120 is released from prison and allowed to coach games. For now, he is facing charges of making threats against the Equestrian States players, assaulting the slave, and unlawful possession of several weapons. No trial date has been set yet and he could very well just be deported back to Gregoryisgodistan.

Lord Almighty Gregory was furious by the arrest of Horse Beater LAL9120, saying "This man is a true Gregoryisgodistani hero, carrying out his duty of horse beating even while abroad. Horse beating is a true form of entertainment in Gregoryisgodistan and Horse Beater LAL9120 simply attempted to do his job and was arrested. Shame on the officials in The Royal Barangay. They ought to be ashamed of themselves. If Horse Beater LAL9120 is not released by the end of the tournament, we will add The Royal Barangay to our Enemy List. This means that it will be legal for Gregoryisgodistanis to kill citizens of The Royal Barangay and that they will receive a 1 million greggygodbuck reward if they do so. This reward applies even abroad, though they may be subject to legal penalties. We have a team of enemy crushers currently in The Royal Barangay, so they would be wise to release Horse Beater LAL9120 immediately. Failure to comply will result in serious injury or death to numerous citizens of that wicked country. Please release Horse Beater LAL9120. He was only doing his job. Thank you."

Game 2 of the Gregoryisgodistan-Equestrian States series is tonight, and it is sure to be a good game. Last game required a shootout, and this game should prove to be good as well. Will the Ice Slaves bounce back and force a Game 3, or will the Equestrian States finish them off? Find out tonight!

Valanora Times
Calcuttas Show Nerves of Steel

Going into their series with Torisakia, most media outlets were picking the Calcuttas to crash out of the World Cup of Hockey in this early knockout round. With a seemingly notorious failing in the knockouts the last decade, the Calcuttas are hardly seen as the threat that they used to pose to the hockey community, even with the Olympic titles in hand. Havl has rose to the top of the heap and in a very thorough fashion, before them their was those pesky robots from Plutoni. It's been years since the world has seen the Calcuttas put on a true show of strength and deep run into the WCoH, even with their lofty ranking in hand. It is just a way to appease the egos of the VSC and the fans of the squad.

Yet that may be changing as the Calcuttas showed that the ranking may be more reflective of their actual skill than previously thought, with a very nervy but well fought victory in game one against Torisakia. One all through the sixty minutes of regulation, with Laerbelidon Taltauré having given the Calcuttas the early lead at 12:05 into the first, though Kristen White evened things up for the seventh rank side at the 3:02 mark in the third. The goalies went on to put a show through the rest of the game, with the Calcuttas having their other twenty-seven shots stopped and their own netminder fending off the other twenty-two that they saw. It was a battle of wills that ultimately was going to be decided by whoever blinked first, which turned out to be a shootout.

I do not know about Torisakia, but the Calcuttas had not been practicing on the shootout leading to the series, and it took Vaniolë Litheth several minutes before he selected his shooters. Lasséseth refused to talk to his teammates during the break, apparently too entrenched in the zone to be distracted and it showed, as the netminder made a fancy glove stop on Torisakia's first shooter, who tried to go high on the gloveside. Imenien Lithloth was the first shooter for the Calcuttas and went in with speed and with a toe drag, found his way around the goalie and potted in the puck for the early advantage. Lasséseth was unable to close the gap between his legs on the second shooter, making the Calcuttas fans in the building nervous, yet there was a huge roar as Balafindien Lanethdal went out wide and then came in, pirouetted, and put the puck over the blocker of the goalie for the advantage through two shooters.

Lasséseth knew he just had to stop the third shooter for the Calcuttas to take the first game and waited outside the crease as the shooter came in with speed. As the attacker tried to put on the brakes and take the shot, Lasséseth pokechecked the puck off his blade and earned the side their victory and a collective sigh of relief not only from the Vanorian supporters, but as well as apparently those in The Royal Kingdom of Quebec, who had taken a keen interest in the outcome of the series. Whether Quebec is trying to get some scouting in or was generally rooting on the Calcuttas, we're not sure, but they were sighted in the Valanora sections of the arena, and taking in the celebration as the fans rejoiced in taking the opening game.

With the advantage now, the Calcuttas will hope to put away Torisakia here in the second game and avoid an even more edgy game three, winner take all scenario. The victory and gritting through the nerves of a shootout like that has given a renewed sense of hope back in the homeland, with social media spheres like ElfLife and VanorianSpace blowing up in support of the Calcuttas here in The Royal Barangay. While there is already several thousand supporters here in attendance, the support back home will undoubtedly mean a great deal to the players. Yet like most professional athletes, it will be the drive to a championship that will likely have them motivated and ready to go in this second game, hoping to take advantage of what will they think be a shellshocked Torisakia side after that mentally draining shootout game. The past has shown that the game after an overtime or shootout loss is usually when a team is most vulnerable and if the Calcuttas are to be in championship form, now is when they must pounce.

World Cup of Hockey XXIV - Havl 3, Vaugania 1
Round of 16: Game 1

Ask A Pro: Haley Hasenpfeffer

Since joining the HHL's Davenport Pilots, goaltender Haley Hasenpfeffer has quickly made a name for herself with her lightning-quick reflexes and replay-worthy reaction saves. After Davis Rich announced his retirement from the national team in WCoH 23, many names were considered for his replacement. At the time, Hasenpfeffer was still playing at the University of Davenport, and few expected that the lanky young netminder would ever break into the HHL, much less the national team. In eleven games of international competition, Hasenpfeffer has posted an impressive undefeated streak, including nine wins.

The Blue Line invited readers to send in questions for Hasenpfeffer, and her answers are featured in this edition of Ask A Pro.

Do you see yourself having to change how you play tactically at all behind the national team?
-Scott P. from Plymouth

Hasenpfeffer: That's a really great question. I'm pretty lucky because my head coach on the national team [Patricia Donofrio] is also the head coach of my HHL team, the Davenport Pilots, and we've been playing a very similar game. I also have four of my teammates on the team, including Brian Beierle who has really set the tone for our defense. To be honest, it hasn't been much of an adjustment from the playing side of things. When I'm on the ice, I get to play my game to my strengths. Plus we're playing on an HHL-sized arena, which is very familiar for me.

The biggest change has been the travel. It's an international tournament, and we had to fly to a new country every day during the group stage. That was a headache! In the HHL, we still travel a lot, but not nearly as often. Now that we're in the playoff stages, there's a lot less travel. Also, playing against unfamiliar teams means a lot more tape review and studying between games.

What's it like to be the first woman to start for the national team? Do you believe expectations are different for you?
-Kyleen S. from Harleston

Hasenpfeffer: That's a tough question. My first instinct is to say, "things are no different for me. I just show up and play." But I think that may be shortsighted and not really a fair answer. I think people still see professional sports as a male-dominant arena, even as teams throughout the multiverse have begun to feature more and more women in important roles. When Coach Donofrio was appointed to the national team, it didn't cause much commotion in Havl, but she had to follow very strict rules in the host nation about how she dressed and acted [ed. Saintland's sumptuary laws].

I hope I can be a role model for young girls to take up the sport, but I also hope that fans and players can see me as a "normal" hockey player. I have an advantage being behind all of my goalie gear, and at the end of the day, I don't think someone on a breakaway is concerned that I'm "just a girl."

The Pilots go through long stretches without giving up lots of shots. How do you stay focused?
-Austin P. from Davenport

Hasenpfeffer: Honestly, that's part of being a goalie. The play's not always going to be in your zone. People always assume that you "zone out" when the puck's on the other side of the ice, but I don't see it that way. For me, it's like I have the best seat in the house. When the puck's in the other zone, I watch the game. People complain about the mental drain of staying focused for three periods, but I don't find it that hard. Maybe it's because I grew up watching hockey on TV and in person. I'm used to following the play.

The real challenge, for me, is when the puck is in my zone. The way we play, I position myself to block the shooter and be ready for a pass. Mostly, the defensemen cover the pass, but you still have to be ready for it. There's a lot to keep track of, especially when there's a long period when we can't clear the zone. I try to stay warmed up when the puck's clear by doing small stretches in the crease and between plays, but mostly I don't have any problems staying "in the game."

What made you want to try goaltending in the first place?
-Amber O. from Ilium

Hasenpfeffer: That's a good question. The truth is, I don't know. I've just always wanted to be a goalie. I loved watching goalies as a kid. I thought it was really cool that each goalie had a different mask, different pads, and different styles. My family wasn't really a hockey family growing up, but my friends got me into hockey when I was 5 or 6 when the Pilots were in the HHL Finals. And I was hooked. It took me a long time to convince my parents to let me play hockey (much less goalie), but I made it very clear that I only wanted to be a goalie.

A lot of the goalies I know started out as skaters or had older siblings that made them play goalie so they could have a full team. It wasn't like that for me. I guess I was drawn to how specialized the position is. As a friend of mine says, "no goalie; no game." And it's so true. We play a vital role on the ice, and there's nothing quite like it in any other sport.

What is your favorite city to play in?
-Steve K. from Capital City

Hasenpfeffer: I grew up in Davenport going to Pilots games and playing on all of the junior teams there, so it's definitely where I feel most comfortable. Starting for the Pilots last year was a dream come true, and I'll never forget what that felt like. My first instinct was "Wow! HHL crowds are loud!"

Other than Davenport, I'd have to say Capital City and Harleston. Sparky Arena [home of the Capital City Captains] is probably the nicest arena as far as player amenities goes, and there's a real hockey culture there. There's a reason they call Harleston "Hockeyville." They may not have the nicest arena (or the best team), but there's something about that place that makes it feel like there's a million Knights fans breathing down your neck.

If I had to choose a least favorite place to play in the HHL, it's hands down Plymouth. No offense to the Phantoms or the people of Plymouth, but those fans are ferocious. My first game against the Plymouth was Hardhat Night at the Panorama, and the fans threw their hardhats at me during the national anthem. They're crazy. Maybe I shouldn't say that, but those fans will boo you until they're sore in the throat.

With the win, Havl leads the best-of-three series 1-0 against 22nd-ranked Vaugania in a best-of-three series. Coverage of World Cup of Hockey XXIV continues on HTVM Wednesday as Havl faces Vaugania live from Arena Mogya.

Oreta Miscue puts Ice-Cat Things in a hole

The best of 3 series between Vilita & Turori and Neu Engollon kicked off at the Arena Nacional in Sangti with the top seeded Neu Engollon edging past their Vilitan and Turorian counterparts by a 3-2 scoreline in overtime after Yeaddin HC goalkeeper Fiko Oreta mis-played a simple-looking long-range dump in.

Neu Engollon appeared to just be dumping the puck down the ice to change their lines but instead of wrapping the puck around the boards, Remy Velper put the long range effort straight in to Oreta's goal. Oreta came out to meet the puck, looking to play it with his stick and take advantage of the opportunity to produce a quick counter attack. However, instead, the puck hopped straight over the blade and rolled agonizingly into the back of the net, an audacious ending to what was an otherwise thrilling matchup to open the Round of 16.

Despite the vast seeding difference between the two teams, with Neu Engollon entering the Round of 16 as the top seed and Vilita & Turori the only surviving low-seed nation at 21st, the opening hour of play was incredibly even with each team scoring a goal a piece in the opening two periods, before shutting down and holding sharply and confidently in the third as the two teams conserved a bit of energy for the overtime session.

The defeat for Vilita and Turori means an uphill battle to preserve their World Cup of Hockey 24 dreams, knowing that another defeat at the hands of Neu Engollon would signal the end of their participation in the competition. After entering the competition as the 5th ranked nation in the multiverse, such an early exit would surely be seen as a disappointment by the Vilitan public, especially on the heels of the Vilita Jungle Cats recent triumph in the World Cup 68.

There is as yet no word as to whether or not Oreta's miscue in game one will result in a change in net for game 2.

2017 QHL Draft-eligible prospects ranking- February Edition(1)

Gabriel Sook Joon Jeong
15th of February, 2017

Montreal, ROYAL KINGDOM OF QUEBEC-
While the Ice Knights are off a key victory against underdogs The Fair Republic, QHL.com will reveal its rankings for draft-eligible prospects ahead of this year's draft, which is going to be held in 24th of June at Valairetech Pavilion, Labrador City. This year's class, which is considered as the deepest since 2012 draft(that featured the likes of Raoul Jang, Dave Clark, Emil Gitnai and Brad McCrimmon), features some of the best prospects in multiverse, at the cream of the crop. With the first part of the ranking we'll see the top five players I have selected. I do not serve the interests of any QHL franchise.

1. C Kirils Golovkovs

From: Quebec City, Capitale-Nationale
Current Team: CSKA Quebec(CHL)
Physique: Extremely muscular, with lots of body strength. 6'5', 226 pounds
Style of Play: Golovkov's a power forward, bearing lots of similarities to Dave Clark. He's more of shooter than playmaker, in which he is excelling at. He's not the quickest when it comes to skates, but his shots, physicality and on-ice presence more than makes up for that. He's not the fighter, even though can fight when needed.
Pros: Great net presence and physicality, excellent slapshots and wristshots. Quick on his skates, he's a threat on any part of ice, as long as he's in position.
Cons: Defensively weak, relies too much on physicality while battling for puck, too agressive with his physicality
Comments: Kirils Golovkovs, the long-hyped prospect and son of former Voltigeur and Avalanche Vladmirs Golovkovs, enters January as once again, the number 1 prospect, of this year's draft class. Currently with CHL-leading CSKA Quebec, he scored 41 goals and 72 points in 38 games despite missing some games due to a suspension and a short stint with injury.
Despite some clear flaws in his game, Kirils once again more than made up for it by maximising his talent on his pros of the game. With this, he effectively showed that the World that he has the talent, and will get himself the honour to be very #1 pick of prestigious event that is QHL Entry Draft. He is certainly a treat to watch on ice and deserves it if the draft is to happen today. Expect him to make the league right away, and potentially be a Team Quebec regular.

2. LW Alexandre Dumont

From: Ogoki Lakes, Hiawatha County, Ontario
Current Team: Ogoki High School Lakers(High School)
Physique: 5'11, 179 pounds. Strong but very undersized
Style of Play: Unlike Golovkovs, Dumont is a playmaker whose forte are his skating abilities, hands and what he holds in his brain. He knacks assists almost anytime he's on ice, but can also score goals. He prefers working around the net, avoiding to be the one right in front of the goaltender.
Pros: Excellent stickhandling, skating abilities and his on-ice IQ, great leadership
Cons: Not playing in WHL, extremely undersized
Comments: Entering this January with a fantastic regular season, Alexandre Dumont showed the World that hype surrounding his hockey epicness was there to stay. The Northern Ontarian native shook the high school stage when he destroyed it while as the senior player of Ogoki High School Lakers, scoring 28 goals and 49 assists in 28 regular games. Right now, they are on their 2 week break before the playoffs start. On the games that he played, it was as if he's the god, as he played invincibly despite his small stature. That's unsurprising, considering the fact that his game is very well rounded as a playmaker. While I do not know if he'll translate his success in QHL, it is clear that he's the only challenger to Kirils Golovkovs' journey to being the #1 overall pick.

3. D Norman D'Angelo

From: Nyhavn, Skagerrak, Norrehavn
Current Team: Winnipeg Winterhawks(WHL)
Physique: 6'3, 206 Ib. Slim and avoids physical contract.
Style of Play: Typical Offensive defenseman
Pros: Explosive skating and offensive instincts, excellent shot, leadership
Cons: Poor work ethics, reluctance to use his physicality
Comments: If Golovkov's the grit and Dumont the brain, Norman D'Angelo's the enigma out of all of the top 5 players in the ranking. While he has all the talents there to exceed Jordan Karlsson or Philippe Charbonneau in the Q, he fell this far in the rankings due to the basic issues such as poor work ethics and his reluctance to use what he has on his body strength. If he's a winger that'd have been fine, but since he's a defenseman D'Angelo's stocks dropped quite a bit. Not to mention the fact that he was playing on what is currently the rebuilding Winterhawks team. Surely that doesn't mean that he'll not succeed in the league, but it's just that it'd require major changes to his game or even changing his position to a Left or Right Wing.

4. D Mark Hanifin

From: Halifax, Acadie
Current Team: Halifax Mooseheads(MHL)
Physique: 6'2, 205 Ib. Durable and strong, but slightly prone to injuries due to his style of playing
Style of Play: He's a hitting machine on-ice, loving to create takeaways through use of physicality. He also loves serving the role of pest, often getting under opponents' skin with his other on-ice actions. Offensively he has above-average wristshot, but still has to improve on snapshot and slapshot. His goals are high, but are normally generated through burying rebounds and deflections. With these, he's considered as the best shutdown defenseman from this loaded 2016 Class.
Pros: Great at being a pest, a live hitting machine. Very good wristshot and skating
Cons: Needs to improve on positioning and other shots, on-ice skating
Comments: Contrary to D'Angelo, Hanifin looks to be a very safe pick for a team looking to draft in Top 5. He has lots of good things in his game as a shutdown defenseman. He knows how to irritate opponents without dropping his mits, as well as keeping the puck possession safely. His issues of positioning at right time is a very basic problem and can be solved with some good coaching from the big league. Overall, Hanifin looks to be another great shutdown defenseman in the draft, following the likes of Vladimir Azikiwe, Stephane Kang and many others to follow. He, according to my prediction, will be at least a #2 defenseman on whatever the team he plays for.

5. G Jonathan Booth

From: Montreal, Montreal
Current Team: CSKA Quebec(CHL)
Physique: 5'11,189 Ib. Slightly undersized but makes up for it with good body strength and extreme flexibility
Style of Play: Booth is a hybrid goaltender, with excellent techniques and flexibility to match this. For this, his comparable, considered by many, is Raphael Roux of Attawapiskat Avalanche. He tends to stay well into the net, which makes it harder for others to score on him. He thrives when there's competition, something that got him named as a U20 Ice Knight last January.
Pros: Excellent techniques and flexibility, good reflexes
Cons: Undersized, lack of fluidity in his movements when not facing enough shots for at least certain amount of time
Comments: Jonathan Booth is one of the many goaltenders who shone in the major junior stage during last several years, which include the likes of Cedrick Labrie-Gallant, Igor Tretiak and Vaclav Pavelec. Drafted 12th overall in 2015 QMJHL draft, He served as the His second season with the Red Army has been spectacular so far, with Booth leading QMJHL netminders of his class in all statistic figures, which is tipped with 6 shutouts and 25-4-1 record out of 32 games so far. Not to mention his experience with the U20 team as a 16 year old, which makes him a valuable commodity on international stages as well. With this and excellent skillsets, Booth looks to be another excellent netminder for the future, in the class of Alexandre Browne, Raphael Roux, Etienne Park and Cadance Edwards-Molsson. He won't be picked first overall, but certainly will be picked in Top 5.

Round of 16 Game 2

Havl and Sicoutimont both secured a place among the final eight. And who would not expect them to get that far at least. Vaugania and Arkiasis fell in two games to them: Vaugania lost 2-0, while Arkiasis lost 2-3 in what was the only non-blowout score Arkiasis played in the knockout rounds.

Other high profile teams have to play another game: Vilita & Turori settled the score with Neu Engollon with a 9-5 win (14 goals in the Sangti stadium!). Falcus had a clutch victory over the Northern Sunrise Islands (4-3), while the Fair Republic needed shootouts to avoid elimination against the Royal Kingdom of Quebec. Gregoryisgodistan won 3-1 over the Equestrian States, and Torisakia makes us wonder why they dropped that first game at all, with a 5-1 win over the Calcuttas.

As for the Dragonflice: everything seemed to go smooth after yesterday, with a 2-0 victory. Today, the Estopeans scored their first goal against us, and the score board showed 1-1 after three periods. Loynes scored an early 1-0 for the Esportivans, with Biluthen equalising late in the second period. After that, both teams tended to their own goals a bit, and we could have had an exciting third period. Instead, both teams defended and foremostly did not want to allow another goal. That would surely have meant the end of the game, and the few attacks (primarily led by Estope's Burton Moren) resulted in possession for the Dragonflice, but our counterattacks were far from successfull. After that, the audience was treated to shootouts.

Where both teams had a huge problem finding the opponent's net, the shootouts suddenly turned into a game of 'make the goalie look like a fool'. Ko-oren was decided to go first, and used Vasiliev, Teradi, Jaragun, Telain and Ivanov. Estope would use Tewari, Loynes, Rookwood, Bowdon and Dutt. Vasiliev led Worrel to the left, pretended to go back right and hit the puck into the lower left corner. 1-0. Tewari exploited a moment's hesitation and scored from some distance. Teradi drifted far to the left, but at the last moment, he found some space in between Worrel's legs: 2-1. Loynes spent a few seconds trying to trick Letirailu, and after that he simply put the puck into the net with a backhand. Jaragun stepped up, and he went straight for goal, pretended to forget the puck just in front of Worrel, but handily got the puck past the goalie in his confusion. Rookwood tried three trick shots before equalising 3-3. Telain made Worrel overcommit to the left, and he pushed the puck to the right. It went in, terribly slowly, and this triggered some late shootout pissing contest (figuratively). Bowdon spent almost all his time tricking around, before finally hitting the puck past Letirailu. Ivanov, who had not played a lot this cycle, tried the same thing, but could not keep up and the puck barely even did not end up anywhere near the goal. This meant Dutt only had to finish. But with most shootouts having only three successful shots, and this one at eight successful attempts at the least, he tried to keep it simple. From close by, he first skated by Letirailu who overcommitted, and then simply finished it off. Estope wins 4-5, and the two teams will have to play a final game tomorrow in Nespa.

Slave 103ALX dies in hospital, Horse Beater LAL9120 charged with murder

Slave 103ALX, the subject of Horse Beater LAL9120's demonstration yesterday of just what he would do to the ponies of the Equestrian States, has died in a hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the demonstration. Horse Beater LAL9120 attacked the slave with numerous different weapons, hitting him multiple times with each, and leaving him bleeding and unconscious on the ground. He was hospitalized and died this morning. As a result, Horse Beater LAL9120 has been charged with second-degree murder (depraved indifference to human life) in addition to the other charges he is facing. He could face up to life in prison if he is convicted.

Lord Almighty Gregory was furious with the additional charge, saying "Slaves are useless. A slave's life is not worth anything. There is nothing wrong with killing one. There is no such thing as murdering a slave. The Royal Barangay is wrong to interfere with our traditions, first that of horse beating and then that of slavery. I call upon the government to release Horse Beater LAL9120 at once and allow him to rejoin the Gregoryisgodistani hockey team as their coach. This is a glorious run for the Ice Slaves and Horse Beater LAL9120 deserves to be there."

Meanwhile, Government Lawyer Bob Bolders, who defended former Ice Slave Enemy Crusher Porky McPorkawitz in his murder trial in Quebec during the Royal Alexandre Invitational, has been hired as Horse Beater LAL9120's lawyer. This is an unprecedented move as Horse Beater LAL9120 is not a government VIP, but Lord Almighty Gregory agreed to the move since Horse Beater LAL9120 has represented the nation on an international stage for several tournaments now and "might as well be a government VIP." Lord Almighty Gregory added that Horse Beater LAL9120 would be given a name upon release from prison should he so choose.

Government Lawyer Bob Bolders was nearly charged with contempt during the Quebec trial and the brave and noble enemy crusher was assigned a public defender. The public defender could not get Enemy Crusher Porky McPorkawitz off on the charges, something Government Lawyer Bob Bolders surely would have done if not for the interference, but did manage to avoid the death penalty. Lord Almighty Gregory is confident that there will be no such interference this time with Government Lawyer Bob Bolders' ability to do his job. "The Barangay judges have seen what happened to the Quebecois prison guards after Government Lawyer Bob Bolders was kicked out of court and a brave, noble enemy crusher was sentenced to life in prison. They're being crushed. Every day, one of them is being crushed. (OOC: Hyperbole/lies, though several of them have been crushed.) I am sure Horse Beater LAL9120 will turn into Prison Guard Beater LAL9120 if he is convicted and will not hesitate to beat the prison guards with anything he can use as a weapon, however unconventional. That lunch tray? Wham! Over a guard's head, knock him out. The table he's eating at? Pick it up and hit a guard with it. That chair he's sitting on? Smack the guard in the back of the head. The shoes he's wearing? Take them off and beat the guard with them. Then take out the shoelaces and start using them as a whip. The toilet paper roll can be used as a weapon too. Just throw it at the guards. Then whip them with the towels and the socks. It will be loads of fun. We can even give him a secret video camera so it can be broadcast to the folks back home. Lots of fun for us, lots of pain for Barangayan guards. Return Horse Beater LAL9120 within 72 hours or be added to the Enemy List. This is your final warning. Release Horse Beater LAL9120 or else!"

"Neu Engollon, Good evening...I'm Magda Wertauer, here with my co-host, Karl Demais, and you're watching the NETV Sports 7 Update.
Tonight we go straight to Sangti, the capital of the Royal Barangay, where one of eight series of the Twenty Fourth edition of the World Cup of Hockey is being held. The National hockey team is playing in the tense Round of 16 after an almost unprecedented steamrolling charge through the first half of the Cup, where a minimal of goals were given up and no losses or draws."

"Right you are, Magda. There is a very short list of nations who have accomplished such a feat, and I think it shocked many both outside and within the nation that the Ibex had become such a high precision juggernaut. With all eyes on rugby, we can be quick to forget that some of our other athletes are striving to take top honors in their sport with such prestige outside the nation."

"Absolutely, Karl. That being said, the mighty Ibex were now given their first defeat of the tournament today with a whopping 9 goals scored against them by the Ice Cat Things of Vilita & Turori. Almost a karmic hammering..."

"To be fair, Magda, the Ibex scored five of their own, but the high scoring match still went heavily in favor of the opponents who outscored them almost two to one. It didn't help that they pulled goalie, Pascal Soltis, halfway through the third period in order to try to catch up and go full offense."

"No, Karl, and it also seems that Vilita & Turori were ready for such a move, in fact, probably counting on it, as their onslaught seemed to increase with the tempting open net ready to swallow their last couple goals."

"It was almost as if they didn't even register the Ibex defense. I would venture to say that this was a match fueled greatly by vengeance, as the first game of the series the previous night was taken by the Ibex on a 3 to 2 overtime shootout to break the two all draw. It was certain that a lot of frustration came from goalie Oreta's fumbling on a long range, slow gliding shot putted from Velper."

"You may have a point, Karl. That one was sure an edge of the seat thriller as we thought the Ibex streak may come to an end a night before it actually did. Also, that whole match was just intense as the final regular third period wound down and both teams started pulling back and matching each other, shot after shot. Of course, still...it was Remy Velper that tapped in that winning puck and set the mood..."

"It was indeed. They're trying, Magda. While they have come up against teams of that caliber before in Cup play, it hasn't been in this Cup. The Dragonflice of Ko-oren, their top competition in Group play, are good, but there is quite a bit of difference between them and top ranked Vilita & Turori, for sure. Anyway, one match left in the series..."

"Much like many of the rest of the Round of 16 teams around the Royal Barangay arenas. Only two teams have locked in series wins to move on, so far. Sicoutimont, and unsurprisingly, Havl. For the rest, close matches today, with one goal difference, or even OT shootouts. Only two teams were beat decisively today, Valanora..."

"...and the Ibex."

"But, as you said, one match left for the Ibex in this series. With a draw and the Ibex looking a bit ragged after two intense matches. I really am wondering if they can bring it, Karl. It's going to come down to those final pre-match minutes in the locker room...them digging deep to that spring and tap into that energy that got them through the first match and holding off the mighty Vee and Tee offense."

"They've been ground down after two grueling matches. It won't be anything like the first match of the series where they were so refreshed after a good break and feeling prepared after drills and they had reviewed counter strategies. Coach Le Houne will have to come up with some serious inspirational magic."

"You mean something more than 'Play better than them'? Really, what can be said. It's like fighting a waterfall."

"They did it once, Magda. They can do it again. It will be tougher this time around, but we have to have faith in our Ibex that they can pull that energy from somewhere."

"Well said. Let's keep the faith! Go Ibex! You can catch the final match of this nail biting series right here on NETV Sports 7 tomorrow."

The Royal Barangay added to Enemy List

Following the arrest and incarceration of Ice Slaves head coach Horse Beater LAL9120, Gregoryisgodistan has added The Royal Barangay to their Enemy List. This means that it is now legal to kill any citizen of The Royal Barangay within Gregoryisgodistan and the killer will receive one million greggygodbucks. Athletic teams and organizations dedicated to the overthrow of the Barangay government are excluded from this proclamation. However, fans of athletic teams are not and may be killed. The citizens will also get the reward for killing Barangayan citizens abroad but may be subject to foreign laws there. However, Lord Almighty Gregory warned that any nation that interferes with the killing of a citizen of a nation on the Enemy List will itself be added to the Enemy List.

Of the addition, Lord Almighty Gregory said "The arrest of Horse Beater LAL9120 is completely unacceptable. We issued several warnings to The Royal Barangay government and they took no action to release him into our hands. Therefore, we had no choice but to add that wicked heathen nation to our Enemy List. We shall destroy that nation, one citizen at a time. They shall all be killed, for it is what the Lord has willed. I am the Lord Almighty, God of everything in the multiverse. The Royal Barangay refuses to respect that and they must be destroyed. Death to The Royal Barangay! Death to Costa Luna! Death to Middleton Valley! Death to Saintland! Death to Free Republics! Death to San Jose Guayabal! Death to Alianza Albos! Death to Hicana! Death to The Greater Vakolicci Haven! Death to Patistan! Death to Jeckland! Death to Estenia! Death to Nexxus Drako! Death to New Wolfopolis! But most of all, Death to The Royal Barangay!"

Hicana was once again included on the list of nations Lord Almighty Gregory called for the death of because the Church of Gregoryisgodistan-supporting government has been overthrown, ending any hope of removal from the Enemy List. Indeed, due to the overthrow of a potentially allied government, Hicana might be added to the Super Enemy List, which would allow killing of anyone who has not pledged their allegiance to Lord Almighty Gregory and called for death and destruction of the Hicanan government, including athletic teams. Whether this will actually happen remains to be seen. Right now, the Gregoryisgodistani government is focused on getting Horse Beater LAL9120 out of prison.

WCoH Predictions and Bets- Round of Sixteen

Georges Lecavalier
16th of February, 2016

Sangti-THE ROYAL BARANGAY- Round of Sixteen’s now over, with its end marked by the glorious riot that the Ice Knights fans, upon their righteous victory against the heathens of The Fair Republic, created following a 3-2 victory. Sure 500 people got injured and at least 30% of Downtown Lenore got at least some form of damage, but who cares as long as we win! Besides, no one died! :D

That being said, we’re back to betting mode again for three, event-filled nights of hockey, drama and blood (I’m looking at you, Gregoryisgodistan: P). Here are my guesses and current betting rate at Royal Montreal Casino!

Neu Engellon vs. Valanora
Betting rate: Neu Engellon: +$105, Valanora: -$90
Yay! Another Neu Engellon vs. a historic AO nation matchup’s on the way as #1 seeded nation of Neu Engellon faces #2 ranked Valanora. Neu Engellon already proved that it’s here for good, by winning against Vilita&Turori in what was a back-and-forth series featuring so many goals in just 3 games, while Valanora went past Torisakia in what was a wakeup call for those elves. They didn’t look the best, but at least was able to make up for it by overcoming their tough Game 2 loss and won it big time in the elimination game.

To the gamblers this is more of skill game than the one involving intangibles. They both play somewhat of a similar type of game, orienting on finesse and speed rather than grit, so lots of back and forth skating, as well as open ice opportunities are expected to come.

This could go either way, but with the way those Calcuttas geared up back to their elite form in the event-filled series against Torisakia, it is safe to say that they’re here for some good fight. In addition to that, the team with more, longer playoff experience holds the advantage, which gives the Vanorians a huge advantage. I expect a Vanorian victory, but not without 3 tough games in which they’ll experience heavy challenges on their way.

Havl vs Sicoutimont
Betting rate: Havl: -$80, Sicoutimont: +$130
There once was a time when many wondered what became of Havl in regular season, as they allowed two surprising draws. Many thought maybe their time as the giant, was over. Well that certainly was proven wrong with what we have seen in their past two games. Havl came back with strong force, sweeping Vaugania in 2. Their defense was solid, offensive depth shone and of course the goaltender was fantastic in stopping Pavel Smirnov and Jurgis Streit multiple times. Thy looked fantastic.

Meanwhile, Sicoutimont, to the dismay of many at the Royal Montreal Casino and other places, destroyed Arkiasis in two games as well. They had a good time in all aspects and certainly deserved winning it.
And now here we are, betting on who out of only sweepstakers in Round of 16 will win. But it’s not that much of discussion to start with, for Havl will win relative ease. Sure, Sicoutimont’s rout of Arkiasis was great as well, but it should be considered that Havl’s at least 2 notches above the #37 Arkiasis when it comes to quality of play. Besides, the latter did not make into playoffs until this season, and looked as fresh as they can be when they faced the seasoned veterans of Sicoutimont. Havl’s no Arkiasis, considering their 3 consecutive championships and a 2nd place in last 4 tournaments. They are built for playoffs and should be able to do so.

Besides, the offensive depth of Havlean team is simply too great to be countered by Sicoutians, whose top two forward lines and bottom defensive pairing are the only ones actually scoring. When it comes to facing such a team built for playoffs, it is necessary to have some depth in scoring and they do not. So that’s why I expect Havl to win in 2 games again.

Estope vs Gregoryisgodistan
Betting rate: Estope- +$125, Gregoryisgodistan: -$80
Yay, more blood! Time to bet if who will be killed or not!

Just kidding. That being said, this series is the one that most will find particularly hard to cheer for either side. Estope, the very infamous host country of last World Bowl, is going to face, the very country well known for its historic, proud traditions of slavery, horse beating and “democracy”. Due to these factors, neither are that attractive of an option for us to gamble with some grins on our faces. After all, they both play an extremely defensive style of play! Damn.

That being said, this series, to me, looks to be another easy one to bet for and against, as one will be too strong and domineering against the other. Not only the Ice Slaves are superior rankwise, they alo have much better offence and starting goaltender, as well as their powerful weapon in the form of Enemy Crushers. Frank “Fatso” McFattel was superb in net against Anditia and Equestrian States during last 2 series and should shine once again in the series. Enemy Crushers are anchoring the team with tight, bone-crushing defensive play they display as well and will more than likely crush some Estopians to their unfortunate end.
At the end of the day, I’ll say that Gregoryisgodistan will win this in 2 games.

Northern Sunrise Islands vs Royal Kingdom of Quebec
Betting rate: Northern Sunrise Islands: +$105, Royal Kingdom of Quebec: -$90
This series features the likes of two, both solid teams who went through totally different fate last series. Northern Sunrise Islands had a decent series with Falcus in which they dominated Game 1 and 3, especially the last one when they blanked those who observe Falcons as their deities :P They looked solid, but not dominant as they should be, considering their #6 ranking and #4 seeding in playoffs. Meanwhile the Ice Knights had to overcome the lack of transparency and fairness in calls by Lzherusskian referees all-series long, as well as pucks not bouncing in their favour. It was a tough time for both coaches, as the players were unfairly treated, leading to a huge riot happening following Game 2(Game 3 riot was done as a form of celebration, btw). Despite that, they still prevailed and looks solid as they ever were.

This series has teams that are even when it comes to overall strength Both Ice Knights and Vaporeans still have good overall team that can score, defend and prevent goals at will very well. They have good coaching staff that helped getting them already at this stage, and fan support will likely be there for both nations(even though it’ll still be around 72-28 when it comes to audience ratio in favour of Quebecois fans).

Despite that, Ice Knights are favoured by most to win the series. Why? This is because of Ice Knights’ ability to be clutch and win in playoffs. In a close series like this, as I have said earlier with Valanora-Neu Engellon series, the team with more playoff experience tends to prevail over those who didn’t have any or had very limited playoff success. Vaporeans have yet to progress further than Quarterfinals, which only happened this time around, while the Ice Knights stormed past the likes of Michael VII, Mohawk Clans and Torisakia to place third in what was a fantastic tournament for Ice Knights.
Due to this factor the Ice Knights are expected to win this series, though no loss than in three, close games.

In Conclusion
Overall, the quarterfinals look to be lot closer than Round of Sixteen, as the better and/or more experienced teams face each other. Only two of the series have clear favourites, with the other two expecting to go either way. It looks to be entertaining one, much better than what was its equivalent back in last World Cup of Hockey hosted in Saintland.
That being said, I wish you readers the best of your betting luck and may the best win, fair and square.

World Cup of Hockey XXIV - Havl 2, Vaugania 0
Round of 16: Game 2

Ask A Pro: Brian Beierle

A member of HHL's Davenport Pilots for over two decades, defenseman Brian Beierle is known worldwide for his league-leading offense and leadership on the blue line. After the retirements of national team stalwarts Justin Donndelinger and Davis Rich, Beierle is the only remaining player from the team's first World Cup of Hockey championship in the 20th edition. Beierle has lifted the Cup three times as part of the national squad, and he hopes to become the first player to win the Cup four times while wearing a Havl jersey. An offensive-defenseman, he's won the HHL's Horace Trophy for best defensive player a record seven times. Beierle was a natural choice for team captain of the national team after long-serving leader Donndelinger retired after the last tournament.

The Blue Line invited readers to send in questions for Beierle, and his answers are featured in this edition of Ask A Pro.

How do you have to change your style of play against international teams?
-Paul S. from Union

Beierle: Good question. It really depends on the tournament and the teams. If we're playing on HHL-sized rinks, it's not much different. We can play our game at our normal speed, do the same kinds of things. When we play on larger international-sized rinks like we did in, I think, Word Cup 21 or 22, it really changes the game. Especially for the defense. I'm big on forechecking and then moving the shooter to the outside and deep. That's harder to do on a large, international-sized sheet.

The other teams can be very different, too. I'm used to playing against the same players in the HHL. It's a relatively small pool of guys, if you think about it. But international teams come in with very different styles of play. Even the species varies a lot in the World Cup of Hockey. I've played against robots, elves, ponies, giant hulks, you name it. That's an added challenge that you don't see every day in the HHL.

What's it like to be the team captain? Has that changed your role on the team?
-Susan K. from Capital City

Beierle: Being named captain was a hug honor. I've been an assistant captain since our first tournament [ed. WCoH 19], so it wasn't a huge surprise. Coach Donofrio met with me before it was announced, and she asked me who I thought should be captain. That was really important. It showed how much she trusts the players on this team. Honestly, I thought of a bunch of players who would be great captains for this team. I thought it would be important to put the "C" on a young player who's going to be around for more tournaments, especially since this is definitely my last shot. But I knew how my teammates would react. They see me as a leader, and I am a leader on this team. It's an honor to wear the "C," and I didn't want to shirk it or act like I was too modest.

Also, I think it's important that players see veterans step up and lead. And I think the captain should spend some time as an assistant captain first. By accepting [the captaincy], I allowed a new player to wear the "A" [ed. Adam Fleer and Petr Zaradnik are new assistant captains this year]. I wouldn't say my role has changed. I see my face on more of the promotional stuff, though.

What's it like playing on the same team with some of your rivals from the HHL?
-Peter A. from Ilium

Beierle: You've got to remember that we're not blood enemies; we're not "rivals." We shake hands with the other team at the end of every game. We skate warm-up together. Most of us have played in the All-Star game together, and some of us even grew up playing hockey together. It's really a relatively small group of hockey players in Havl, and the success that the national team has had has really brought us together. It's almost like we're a fraternity or a club. It's more interesting to play against each other in HHL games, you know? When I skate against [Jason] State [from the Ilium Winterhawks], we're joking a lot between plays. I'll still knock him down when he skates through the D-line, but I'll help him up after.

[Former national team Coach Nicklas] Lindberg did a great job building esprit de corps on this team, and we all work hard to maintain it. It's a rigorous process to stay on the national team, but the camaraderie is almost as important as your skills. Returning players get that benefit at tryouts. Some people don't understand that, and that's fine. It seems to work with us. There are some kick-ass players on the HHL that simply wouldn't fit in on this team. For a long time, that was Jason State. He watched us win the first World Cup of Hockey when he was 18, 19 years old because he was just too cocky. And he changed. He's still a cocky bastard, but he plays the team game.

What made you want to be a defenseman?
-Oliver B. from Harleston

Beierle: I never wanted to be a defenseman. I was a big, tall kid from an early age, and my coaches always put me on D. And honestly, it was a way to get more ice time. If you're netting hat tricks in every game, you're going to get moved up and moved up until you're playing at a level where you may not stand out. As a defenseman, I was able to play at my level and also get into some games below my level without being kicked out. And those "under the radar" games helped me develop a better sense of how the game works. It was slower. I could see how passes were set up and how players try to get through.

I've played every position. I played goalie at times in high school, too, even as the team's leading scorer. I guess just being tall, strong, and fast made me a good fit at defense. I've grown to love it. I'm not what you'd call a "traditional" defenseman, because I love to come up and shoot the puck. But I have some advantages that allow me to do that and still get back to forecheck and challenge the offense.

What is your favorite city to play in?
-Steve K. from Capital City

Beierle: I like playing in Davenport. It's my hometown. My family comes out to most games, and I grew up playing youth hockey in the area. It's also easy to get there. I just drive there from my house. It's less of a hassle, and I can get ready faster. The fans are great there, too. Obviously there's a lot of history with all of the Solo Cups that the Pilots have won there, both before I was on the team and with me as a player. There's a lot of tradition and superstition, and it really feels like home.

With the win, Havl wins the best-of-three series 2-0 against 22nd-ranked Vaugania in a best-of-three series and will face 10th-ranked Sicoutimont in the Quarterfinals. Coverage of World Cup of Hockey XXIV continues on HTVM Friday as Havl faces Sicoutimont live from Lorenz de Baoyam Arena.

Gregoryisgodistani Soldiers Break Into Prison, Free Horse Beater LAL1920

A team of 500 Gregoryisgodistan soldiers has broken into a Royal Barangay prison and freed head coach Horse Beater LAL1920 from the jail cell where he was being held on charges of assault, murder, and making terroristic threats, among other charges. The team of soldiers stormed the prison heavily armed and shot the guards who were guarding Horse Beater LAL1920. They then broke the bars on his cell and escorted him to safety. Horse Beater LAL1920 was then put on a military charter to Gregoryisgodistan, rather than keeping him in The Royal Barangay for the remainder of the tournament and risking arrest again. As a result, Elementary School Teacher KS9193 will act as head coach for the remainder of the tournament.

Horse Beater LAL1920 returned to Gregoryisgodistan safely this afternoon after the charter landed. While there, he told the assembled press "It is great to be out of that horrific jail. I was just doing my job and should not be punished for that. I thank Lord Almighty Gregory for organizing the team of soldiers to raid the prison and free me from that horrific place." According to reports, about 20 prison guards were killed in the crossfire and a few more were taken to the hospital. One inmate was also wounded, though not severely. The soldiers are now all back in Gregoryisgodistan as well.

Lord Almighty Gregory released a statement on the matter, saying "This is a glorious day. Horse Beater LAL1920 is a free man again, though regrettably he will not be able to rejoin the Ice Slaves this World Cup. The fact remains that The Royal Barangay is still on our Enemy List. They will continue to remain on our Enemy List unless the entire nation converts to the Church of Gregoryisgodistan and recognizes me as the True Lord Almighty. I am the Lord Your God, the God Almighty Upon This Multiverse. Bow down to me or die, heathens. All heathens must recognize me as God someday or they will spend an eternity in The Land of Eternal Torture, eternally being sliced with the Brownie Cutter of Death. The Brownie Cutter of Death is a very sharp, very large instrument resembling a brownie cutter except it can cut through skin, bone, and organs. It is used to chop up traitors and other heathens into hundreds of little tiny pieces. Death to The Royal Barangay! May they forever stay in the Land of Eternal Torture after death as well. They shall pay for all their misdeeds, for my word they did not heed."

In any case, all the soldiers involved in the raid received medals. Three of the soldiers were killed and will be buried with their medals. They will also be honored on the next Martyr's Day as those who gave their life in the name of Lord Almighty Gregory. For now, it is only five days until Lord Almighty Gregory's birthday, so get your present shopping done soon. Remember, if you don't get him a birthday present, you and your whole family will be killed. So leave Lord Almighty Gregory's birthday present outside your home the night of June 16. On June 17, beginning at midnight and lasting all day as more presents come in, he will open them all on national TV, continuing into future days if needed. And it will be needed. Last year it took him 15 days to open them all, though he paused for about eight or nine hours a day between eating, drinking, sleeping, and other personal things. And at the end, Lord Almighty Gregory will reward the best gift givers with government VIP status. This means you get your very own name! So buy Lord Almighty Gregory a great present, then watch as he opens yours on LIVE TV!

"Buon Nachi, Neu Engollon!
Magda Wertauer here on the NETV Sports 7 Update. Once again, we bring you coverage from the World Cup of Hockey in the Royal Barangay. Neu Engollon won their last match of their series with Vilita & Turori yesterday, 6 to 3. Many were astonished, expecting a closer score, but they may just have worn down the Ice Cat Things enough while they were able to direct their collective will to throwing everything they had out on the ice.
If there was any game of the last few that they needed to really rack in, this was it, and they knew it. The effort was there on the ice and it paid off, with the Ibex moving on to the quarterfinals. Scoring honors go to Velper, with 2, and one each for De Gratzo, Manon, Mastroni and Telhoffen. Celebrations in Burgunden went into the wee hours at many pubs, and word is that Albertville, the true home of Ibex hockey, was in even more of an uproar...

Cut to today, the start of their series with Valanora. Winning the first match would have been crucial to set the tone, but the same effort and energy from yesterday wasn't there. The Ibex went down with one more goal from the Vanorian opposition slipping into the net and breaking the three all tie, thanks to center Voronthal Falasumé, off a pass from winger Mallithar in the closing minutes of the third period. It seemed as though maybe the Ibex were counting on a shootout and preparing themselves a little prematurely for what was obviously not a guaranteed situation. Lesson learned...We hope.
Now there is no margin. Each period, each break for the puck, each minute on the ice or in the box, is crucial to the Ibex continuing on and making history for both the Confederacy and Astyria, or ending this run for glory. No one is celebrating tonight. Citizens are blocking time, or setting DVRs in order to prepare for the emotional barrage that is the Ibex in unfamiliar territory. Then they will probably try to rest and hope for the best tomorrow.

The following advisory has just crossed our desk...
Citizens of both the Confederacy and other Astyrian nationals, a travel advisory has been issued by the Confederacy's Ministry of Foreign Affairs today. Those currently in, or with plans to be in the Atlantian Oceania region are strongly advised to stay in touch with the Neu Engollon consulates and embassies, law enforcement agencies where trusted, and be on guard. Hostility towards Neu Engollian citizens is at an all time high, especially in the nations of Ko-oren, Vilita, Turori and Valanora, where some isolated incidents towards Neu Engollian businesses and persons have been reported. Blending in as best as possible and removing all traces of Neu Engollian national identity, especially hockey memorabilia and fan gear is highly recommended. Stay indoors whenever possible. Stay safe people!

You can catch the next Valanora vs Neu Engollon match right here on NETV Sports 7 on repeat and simulcast on NETV Sports 19. Go Ibex!"

Ice Slaves Through to Semifinals

The Gregoryisgodistan hockey team, also known as the Ice Slaves, is through to the semifinal round after a shootout win against Estope. Enemy Crusher Franky "Fatso" McFattel held the opponent scoreless for the entire game, including overtime, but the Ice Slaves could not score. Enemy Crusher Franky "Fatso" McFattel made 40 saves in goal total, doing a fantastic job of resisting everything he saw from Estope. Meanwhile, Joshua Worrel was equally phenomenal, making 33 saves in regulation plus overtime.

As a result, the game went to a shootout, which Estope needed to win to keep their hopes of a championship alive. Alex Rookwood shot first but the shot bounded off Enemy Crusher Franky "Fatso" McFattel's big body and harmlessly away. Good save by the goaltender. Weatherman 92UDH9111 would take the first penalty shot for the ice slaves. He managed to find an angle to beat Worrel but then shot it off the post. It was 0-0 after one turn each. That would bring up Burton Moren. He went straight at Enemy Crusher Franky "Fatso" McFattel', who knocked it away with his stick. That brought up Actor 81248D8J, aka Doybert. He made a cheekly little move and shot it past Worrel to the left post and Gregoryisgodistan led in the shootout 1-0. Curt Francesco now had to make a shot for the Estope team to pull even. If he did not make it, Gregoryisgodistan would go through to the semifinals. Francesco stepped up, went down the ice, and shot it off the left post. No goal. Gregoryisgodistan wins in a shootout.

Next up, the Ice Slaves will face Sicoutimont tonight in game 1 of a best of three series. Sicoutimont was apparently too incompetent to post a roster, which means the Ice Slaves will be looking to crush anonymous players literally and figuratively. It should be a very fun match. The Ice Slaves are probably favorites due to Sicoutimont's lack of roster, but they did beat Havl, and that has to count for something. It should be a fun series. Game 1 of the finals and third place series will most likely be on Lord Almighty Gregory's Birthday, June 17. However, if both semifinals end in two games, the championship series will start on June 16 and Game 2 will be played on Lord Almighty Gregory's Birthday. Will the Ice Slaves give Lord Almighty Gregory the best birthday present of all - a win in the championship series? They have to get there first. They will be looking to do just that tonight.
