Runner Cup 2 ~ Everything Thread

Welcome to the Runner Cup 2

The Runner Cup, now in its second edition, is a tournament for nations who still wish to pursue success in international association football (known variously as soccer or futbol) yet did not qualify for the World Cup or the Cup of Harmony. This tournament is not WCC sanctioned, which means it will NOT boost your KBP; the KBPC formula* is used to generate ranks in this tournament.
* regular KPB except for fallowing exceptions:
1x of points earned last Runner Cup will be added.
1/2 of points earned two Runner Cups ago will be added.
2x points earned for last Runner Cup Playoffs will be added.
1x of points earned two Runner Cup Playoffs ago will be added.
Nations that participated in the latest world cup (World Cup 68), did not qualify for the World Cup proper, and were not invited to the Cup of Harmony (CoH 60) are eligible for this tournament. If the nation meets the above qualifications, a telegram will be sent to them. To accept the invitation, post a roster in this thread or reply to the telegram that you will be participating. You may post a style number between -5 and +5, with -5 being complete defense and +5 being complete offense. If no style mod is posted, it will be assumed to be 0.

Groups will be determined by the number of participants. For this tournament, we aim for a 16 team tournament, although this is subject to change. Qualifying will be a double round robin, and the top two teams from each group will advance to a knockout round that is TBD based on the number of groups we have. Scorination will be xkoranate 0.3.3 with the SQIS formula. Since all matches will be played in Ceni, no home bonus will be applied. RP bonus will be scored on a scale of 0 to 4, with quality > quantity; this is not saying that a two-sentence RP will do better than a two paragraph RP. RP bonus will be cumulative throughout the tournament. Tiebreakers will be as follows: points difference, H2H wins, H2H goal difference, RP bonus + rank, playoff game. The schedule will be determined based on the number of groups.

Note: Bonticello was divided into the independent subnations of Bonte (bawn-tay) & Cellopane (sell-o-pane), where average citizens did not have much contact with the other, but have now been reunited. The area was previously controlled entirely by black tribesmen until the whites pushed them off of their land. The whites were then required to limit their expansion under the "Fair Frontier Act" proposed by Congressman Harrow, and the subnations were forced to form as a result. Both nations became technologically advanced around the same time, despite being politically separated. The two nations were led by Congressional Governments, where Elected Congressmen hold all the power. Now as the nation is combined, riots have broken out in the Cellopane areas, and death threats have been called against all members competing on the national team. Because of this, Vettrera has allowed Bonticello to play in their nation.

The off-color patch was put on by the Vettreran government to symbolically represent that some of the Bonticello civilians are not okay with blacks (aka Bontays in Bonticello) and whites are intermingling, and competing as one nation.

Down the Rabbit Hole: Hicana's WC 68 Qual Roster

Background: After traveling through a warp that eliminated fatigue to play a best-of-99 series against Nexxus Drako, Hicanan scientists took illegal samples of materials in the warp and the other dimension and distilled it at home to create a potion that would eliminate fatigue and aging. It was mixed in with protein supplements and added to the food of the national team players to make them stronger, have amazing stamina, and immortal. It worked.

"Those Hicanans have stolen our flag and turned it upside-down!"

"No!"

"Oh, yes!"

"So what's this, then?"

"The Runner Cup."

"What's that then?"

"No idea. But they're letting us enter it."

"Why?"

"No idea."

"OK."

"It's going to be a challenge! To keep our 100% record up!"

"Really? Are some of the teams as appalling as ours is?"

"Well, there's a very real possibility."

"And what is our team?"

"Whatever."

"Again?"

"Yep."

"Best chance we've got, I guess."

OOC: Total n Utter Inanity is quite an illogical place. The normal rules of pretty much anything go completely out of the window. The squad is whatever you want it to be. The same goes for anything that happens in the team's games. Go for it!

Manager
Full Name: Ronald M. Rusley
Nationality: Darvale
Age: 58
City of Origin: Corin
Current Club: Corin FC
Brief Description: Ronald Mark Rusley was born in the cultural capital of Darvale, Corin, on January 21st, 1956. Manager of both the national side as well as the best team in the nation, Corin FC, he is widely respected and admired by fans, and renowned for his inexplicably calm personality, even in difficult situations. Rusley played for Corin United FC, the predecessor of Corin FC, in the amateur Darvalian Premier League (DPL) from 1976 to 1990, as a full-back. However, he stayed in the team as an assistant coach for 16 years, until the year of 2006, when his predecessor, Andrew Dale, retired. He was then chosen to replace Dale and has held the position of manager ever since. In November 2007, Rusley was elected in a national vote to become the national team's manager. 1 month later, he was officially admitted into the team as the new manager of the national side, and has held the position up to this date.

Head Coach
Full Name: Grigori J. Petrov
Nationality: Darvale
Age: 53
City of Origin: Corin
Current Club: Corin FC
Brief Description: Grigori Josef Petrov was born in the nation's largest city, Astaria, on September 12th, 1961. He developed his interest in football at an early age, playing in the Youth League from 1973 to 1977, from the ages of 14 to 17. He was recruited to Corin United FC 1 year later, at the age of 19, in 1978, and dropped out of school to join the team. His career was extremely successful, scoring over 25 goals in 3 months alone. In March 1983 however, he was put on a 6 month loan to Athletic Teviera, then one of the, if not the most successful team in the DFL. However, after Teviera's then manager Albert Talone was killed and Sylvester Wayward took his place in May 1983, Petrov's loan was aborted and terminated, causing him to return to Corin United FC. Petrov played alongside Ronald Rusley until the latter retired in 1990, but the former continued playing until 1992, when he retired as well. Petrov took a brief break from the world of football from 1992 to 1996, until he was recruited back to Corin United FC as Head Coach, a position which he happily accepted. 4 years later, in 2000, Petrov, with his expertise, was picked as Assistant Coach for the national side, and held the position until 2005. 2 years later however, Petrov re-seized the position until 2011, when he was promoted to Head Coach after showing great skill in his previous position of. Petrov is known to be very ambitious, and has a reputation to make the team play in a very offensive way.

Assistant Coach
Full Name: Murphy K. Walterson
Nationality: Darvale
Age: 48
City of Origin: Redfield
Current Club: Athletic Teviera
Brief Description: Murphy K. Walterson was born on March 19, 1963, in Redfield, Darvale. He showed an early in football from a young age, and was admitted into Wasdworth FC's junior squad at the age of 13, in 1976. After an impressive debut in Wadsworth, he was recruited to Athletic Teviera 3 years later, in 1979, at the age of 16. Walterson played there for 2 years, until the age of 18, when he applied for a position in Grimsby Town FC's roster, a DPL team. Walterson played in the First 11 of Grimsby as a right-winger for 4 years, until he moved to Corin United FC in 1983, where he played alongside Rusley and Petrov for another 4 years, until the age of 26, when he was transferred to Athletic Teviera in 1987. Walterson played in Teviera until the age of 32, in 1993, when he retired. In 1999 however, at the age of 38, Walterson returned to Athletic Teviera, after being appointed as Assistant Manager of the team, where he still is today. 2 years later, in 2001, at the age of 40, he was selected as Assistant Manager of the national team

Hi. Ceni, are you sure you sent TGs to every invite on the list without missing anyone? Because I didn't get one even though I'm clearly on the list, as shown below here.

Mizuyuki (Mikazukian: 瑞雪 , Tinchalian: 瑞雪, Mizuyuki; formally 瑞雪国 Mizuyuki-koku, Ruixueguo, alternatively the Auroral Technocratic Union of Mizuyuki) is an amalgamation of twenty separate local regional governments into one discrete entity, commonly referred to as simply The Technocracy of Mizuyuki. Part of the region of Aurora along with regional neighbours Norvenia, Aurinsula and Skorzenia, Mizuyuki is regarded one of a select group of nations with the highest level of human development in the known world, scoring 0.902 on the Human Development Index (HDI) in 2013. The nation also plays host to several multinational corporations with a global presence, most notably the government run Sakura Japanese Cuisine, Paladin Cinemas of New Edom and Arcadia Initiative.

Stretching over 275,000 km2 in total land area, Mizuyuki is among the smaller nations in the Aurora region. However, it ranks among the most densely populated nations in the region, with an average population density of 438 people per square kilometre. Mizuyuki practises a form of government that is essentially a democratic technocracy combined with a unitary bicameral parliamentary system operating under a constitutional monarchy - a unique governmental system that has allowed the country to flourish and prosper years after its inception.

Even though Mizuyuki is officially recognised as a distinct sovereign entity, it is practically similar to a form of regional coalition among the twenty prefectures(県), which are further subdivided into seventy two districts(郡). As such, the prefectures are usually given a high degree of autonomy in performing their administrative functions; the federal government will only interfere in the prefectural administration if the need arises. Mizuyuki is currently under the de jure reign of Her Imperial Majesty Shirakawa-no-Kirino, while the Executive Committee, colloquially known as the Decimvirate, acts as the official advisor to the Empress.

Team Background

Mizuyuki under Shirakiin Kurumi's tutelage has been a revolution so far. After Shirakiin took Ishikawa's place for the Market Cup held in Mapletish this edition, she masterfully led the team to a long run in the tournament, culminating in a pulsating 3-2 victory over a strong Ko-oren outfit in the final and lifting the Nova's first ever piece of silverware in the process.

Shirakiin is a very ideological coach when it comes to football strategy and tactics; as such, she has persevered with her brand of attacking, creative football throughout her reign at the top of Mizuyuki's footballing hierarchy. Shirakiin heavily emphasises the rapid recycling of possession from the back - it's not uncommon to see the ball being passed quickly from the defence to the midfield or forward line after possession is gained, without any dithering on the ball. However, there is a distinct personality to the team's attacking play - Mizuyuki usually breaks rapidly down the flanks before cutting into the middle. This can give them some trouble when they come up against a team who prioritises the battle for the center of the park, but in that case the two inverted wingers will switch flanks and start to bomb crosses in from wide with their favoured foot - the same goes for the wingbacks. The philosophy of Total Football is also given priority in Shirakiin's system, and Mizuyuki's players will regularly switch positions during open play, so a wingback may appear in the forward line, and a striker might track back to defend while leaving a winger up front as an auxiliary forward.

Formation, Starting 11, and Style

Image

Style Modifier= -3.5

Nova Anglicana has never been known on the world stage for the quality of its football. The key for this squad will be learning to play together as a cohesive unit. Nova Anglicana is led by three stars: Julian Neal, Newfield FC's outstanding goalkeeper, Giuseppe Carbone, veteran and captain of Bridgewall City FC, and Raphael Baptiste, the dangerous Olympique Sept-Iles striker who led the league in scoring last year. The rest of the team is not so great, but with a first attempt at qualifying under their belts, they will be ready for their second go-round

Accordingly, manager Patrick Moran has gone with a 1-4-4-1 formation that allows the two non-goalkeepers to maximize their talents. The 1-4-4-1 is a bit unorthodox and antiquated, employing a sweeper and a striker. Moran and the NAFA believe in controlling possession and cutting off the opponent's access, thus making them unable to score, and follow somewhat the Italian philosophy of catenaccio, or "doorbolt" football. Carbone is responsible for picking up loose balls that get behind the defense and also for personally marking the opponent's best striker. The two center defenders and midfielders pinch together to clog the middle of the field, while the two outside defenders sag back to cover the wings as the two outside midfielders move slightly up in support of Baptiste. The main focus of the formation is to deny the opponent goal-scoring opportunities and keep control of the ball to feed to Baptiste. If the Lions do allow an opponent to get deep into the defense, Carbone will clean things up and begin the counterattack. This style, far from being boring, is applauded by many Nova Anglican fans, who prize hard work, perseverance, and value the hard-fought tie just as much as the win.

Whether this style will bring them any success in qualification for the 2nd Runner Cup remains to be seen. The Lions, who had struggled in the past to score more than a single goal if the opponent is able to deny Baptiste, showed some additional scoring in Kyle Fleming and David Pelletier, but the philosophy of possession football will have to be at peak efficiency to prevent the opponent from scoring. In the BoF 54, the Lions won two of three group stages games for six points, and qualified to the round of 16. However, there, their run came to an end in a defeat against Yttribia on PKs (0-0 AET, 6-5 PK). In the 67th edition of the World Cup, the Lions finished with a record of 6-4-6, good for 22 points and 4th place in their qualfying group. They conceded a mere 13 goals, but were only able to score a paltry 11. They were eliminated in the group stages of the 59th Cup of Harmony, losing a pair of games to two strong teams in Felix and Saintland. In the 68th World Cup, the Lions were in position to qualify with three games remaining, but lost two of their final three to World Cup Qualifiers in San Jose Guayabal and the Licentian Isles, finishing with a final record of 8-1-5. They did not receive an invitation to the Cup of Harmony, but they are honored to be participating in the 2nd Runner Cup and look forward to advancing deep into the tournament.

Team Strategy

Image

In many ways, the style of hoofball played by the Crystal Empire is similar to that of the Equestrian States, being based on speed, endurance, and the natural advantages of equine athletes. However, there are a couple of key differences between the two teams' approaches. First, the Crystal Empire is more defensive than their Equestrian counterparts, using a slightly-modified 4-4-2 formation and relying on the midfielders to provide additional defensive support if needed. This conservative strategy allows the Crystal Knights to better weather the early all-out attacks that have felled the Ponies in the past, leaving them rested and capable of staging second half surges similar to those utilized by the Equestrian States.

Furthermore, the Crystal Empire lacks the species diversity that the Equestrian States is so well known for, being over 98% inhabited by crystal ponies. While they may lack some of the natural advantages held by other sapient equines, the crystal ponies should still not be taken lightly by humanoid players. Like other ponies, crystal ponies are generally shorter than their humanoid opponents but make up for it with impressive jumping abilities (though not nearly as awe-inspiring as those of the pegasai). Finally, while sapient equines rarely "play dirty", crystal ponies take clean play to a whole new level with their wholehearted devotion to the elegance and beauty of the game.

Home Stadium
Image
Imperial Arena

Location: Crystopolis
Capacity: 69,740
Tenants: Crystopolis City

Located adjacent to the towering Crystal Palace, Imperial Arena was constructed shortly after the Crystal Empire reappeared to the north of Magical Equestria as a part of the nation's bid to host the Equestria Games. In the decade or so since the games were held, many other sports competitions have taken place in the Empire's largest stadium and several prominent local hoofball clubs have also taken up residence.

A multipurpose indoor venue, Imperial Arena's main field is encircled by a track, somewhat limiting the seating of supporters, though additional accommodations will be added to reduce the distance separating the fans from the field. Additionally, it should be noted that pickaxes, hammers, chisels, and other tools brought into the Crystal Empire will be confiscated and checked upon entry to the nation as stealing chunks of the Empire's predominantly crystal architecture is generally frowned upon by the local authorities.

Roster

Coach: Emmilia Lin-Riley

She started her career as a volunteer nonprofessional trainer and moved on to coaching college and regional teams. She is enthusiastic about the sport, although she only played it in her childhood, before an injury to her hamstring effectively ended her career as a player.

Asistant Coach: Gavin Quintero

Quintero has come out of retirement to help coach. He was a long time player, but has stopped playing after turning 73. Impressive knowledge, of both the sport and colorful language.

Main Players (Jersey Number in parentheses)

Goalie: Benjamin Roy(01)
Roy is dependable and level headed, good against penalty kicks or for saving shots from the goal line. He has been criticized for not being aggressive enough to charge loose balls.

Sweeper: Greg Jimenez(02)
Jimenez is fast. He was considered for the center position, however his head for strategy and his skill for directing the other defenders position make him an excellent sweeper.

Defenders: Kurt Erwin(03), Michael Franz(04)
Erwin plays right defender, and is known for his large clear: when a ball is in the danger zone, Erwin gets it out. His grasp of positioning is all right, but he has a tendency to dive in and let attacking players get past him.
Franz is the left defender. His ball handling skills are not outstanding, but his passing game is excellent. His endurance is not especially good, however he can get back fast if a ball gets past him.

Defensive Mids: Nigel Rawlins(05), Walter Black(06)
Rawlins is the left defensive midfield. He aggressive to the ball and stops attacks before they begin, but often doesn’t get back to help defend if a ball gets past him.
Black is also an aggressive player, but more likely to get back and defend. In fact, Black’s main problem is getting pulled out of position.

Center: Eduardo Ortega(07) (Captain)
Widely considered the team’s star player, Ortega is the team captain. Ortega is very fast, with great endurance and excellent ball handling skills, although he can be something of a ball hog. He is very good at avoiding defenders and takes good shots when he gets the opportunity.

Attacking Mids: Adrian Amarali(08), Lukan Ebert(09)
Amarali is the right attacking midfield. He has an excellent passing game and, while he doesn’t often take shots, his crosses and corner kicks are perfectly placed to set the forwards up for scoring.
Ebert is a pushy player, who has the most yellow and red cards of anyone of the team. He tends to muscle through defenders rather than avoiding them, but has a good shot when he gets to the goal.

Forwards: Christopher Berardino(10) Wilhelm Gilliam(11)
Berardino is easily pushed around but has good ball handling skills and a good shot. He takes most penalty kicks for the team. He has a reliable shot, always low and to the corner.

Gilliam always stays pushed up, and is sometimes caught offside. But his positioning pays off on long balls that he collects and puts away with accuracy and speed. The team’s top scorer.

Reserve Players:

G: Coleman Bennett

S: Julio Rosales

D: Ray Fredericks, Emerson Murry

DM: Isaac Finnegan-Stanly, Nathaniel Peyton

C: Parker Leslie

AM: Gaston Shepards-Hawksley, Derik Zaragoza

F: Carl Navarro, Burton Thornburg

RP Permissions

Head Coach

Ernesto Farías
Veteran former international striker who played a key part in Sargossa’s very first national squad. Farías has held numerous roles within the international structure, including two caretaker spells in charge of the senior side. Most recently manager of SuperLiga side Ciudad Soluca before replacing the departing Iarlaith Mag Aonghusa at the Corsairs’ helm.

Backroom Staff

Assistant Head Coach: Elías Carrasco
Defensive Coach: Germán Moya
Attacking Coach: Rubén Contreras
Goalkeeping Coach: Silvio Romero
Fitness Coach: Sergio Castellanos
Technical Coordinator: Alejandro Echeverría
Team Doctor: Dr Iván Morelli

Talent

GK: 1. Ezequiel Medrán (32) – Sporting San Marquez
Long ago picked out by former national coach Martín Tejera, who knew a thing or two about goalkeeping, as one to watch. Undisputed first choice in the Sargossan goal.
GK: 13. Armando Abad (26) – Dínamo Maturín
Such is the bend on this lad that there is a continuing suspicion that Armando may actually be partially elastic.
GK: 25. Emilio León (21) – Sportivo Soluca
A regular in the Sportivo goal at the age of just 19, big things are expected of the young shot stopper.

DR: 2. Cristiano Damían (24) – Astograth University (Astograth)
An eyebrow or two were raised when Astograth University snapped up a little known youngster from Ciudad Soluca. But he’s since proved that the ‘Grathi’s had got themselves a bargain.
DRC: 5. Guillermo Lucena (21) – Ciudad Soluca
A favourite of Farías after serving him well in the Under-21 team, the Olympic Squad and at Ciudad. A solid defender with an excellent reading of the game. Equally adept at centreback or fallback.
DLC: 6. Mauro Fernández (33) – Ciudad Soluca
Rugged yet imperious, a rock at the back for Ciudad and a suitably impressive barrier for the national side too. Unlikely to win any prizes for elegance but when Mauro clears the ball it stays cleared.
DL: 3. Mauricio Abeyta (23) – Alianza Jucaro
A buccaneering fallback who clearly longs to be a winger. An attacking threat down the left with a powerful shot and accurate cross. Unfortunately his defensive duties are sometimes forgotten.
DC: 12. Matías Sosa (30) – Liria Prizren (Mytannion)
A free scoring centreback whose temperament has been known to get him in a spot of bother. So he probably feels right at home in Mytannion.
DR: 14. Cristón Espinal (22) – El Nacional
A rightback by trade but often pressed into service in the centre of defensive during an injury crisis in Goza last season. Another former member of Farías’ Olympic Squad.
DLC: 19. José Toranzo (28) – Perntav Marna TU (Earent)
Can play at both left fallback and in the centre of defence, looking equally accomplished in both positions. Currently plying his trade in Earent.
DC: 21: Aurelio Pascual (27) – Sportivo Cordova
Only a dearth of strong centrebacks has kept Pascual out of national team reckoning for this long. But after strong domestic season has finally seen the Cordova man force his way into the squad.

DMC: 4. Lucas Ramís (33) – Sporting San Marquez
Strong in the challenge, unafraid to get stuck in, Lucas is a midfield destroyer of the highest order. Despite his age, a vital component for both club and country.
AMR: 7. Javier Jerez (31) – Sporting San Marquez
A tricky winger with plenty of technique but a willowy frame that struggles to compete with the game’s more physical practitioners. But still the best supply of crosses in the squad.
MC: 8. Rodrigo Defederico (31) – Oyardo FC (Astograth)
A talented midfielder who once had every Sargossan club of stature fighting over his signature. But the playmaker turned down the likes of Sporting San Marquez and Ciudad Soluca to make the move to Astograth.
AML: 11. Federico Cifuentés (21) – Dínamo Maturín
It’s entirely possible that Federico could have represented Sargossa at the Olympic 100m, such is the pace hidden away in his diminutive frame. A real terror for opposition fallbacks, although a consistent delivery shy of being genuinely world class.
AMRC: 15. Flavio Freitas (23) – El Nacional
A tireless attacking midfielder whose impressive work rate and never say die attitude make him a firm favourite among Gozans and neutrals alike.
MC: 16. Germán Sauseda (22) – Ciudad Soluca
Midfield playmaker with a prestigious range of passing. Sauseda stood out in a fairly average Porto Alegro Azul side that consistently punched above its weight. Brought to Ciudad by Farías a year ago.
AML: 18. Sebastián Canteros (30) - Perntav Marna TU (Earent)
Started life as a striker before the youth coaches at the Ciudad Deportiva decided that such crossing ability was wasted in the centre. Has joined Toranzo in Earent.
DMC: 22. Matías Escobar (29) – Marinos Metropolis (Valladares)
A midfield destroyer who can run all day without breaking a sweat. Consistently good performances in the Liga De Fuego led to a move abroad.
AMLC: 24. Ivan Ávila (30) – Ciudad Soluca
A regular understudy for the great Alejandro Echeverría at the Estadio Generalissmo Joaquín Delgado and with the national side. He may have turned thirty but finally the patience should pay off.

FC: 9. Federico Ferreyra (30) – Urbizania Wanderers (Astograth)
A penalty area predator who made his name for little Nuevo Onwere before making the move to Astograth. Swapped the purple of Gortz Utd for the altogether greener, quite literally, pastures of Urbizania Wanderers.
FC: 10. Stefano Bustos (25) – Sportivo Soluca
At 6’4” the Sportivo targetman is a real threat in the air and adds the perfect option if the ‘hoof it to the big fella’ card needs to be played.
FC: 17. Federico Noyola (22) – Sporting San Marquez
Yet another gem unearthed from the barrios of San Marquez and polished by ‘El Academia’. Has an uncanny knack of being in the right place and the right time and has proved a scourge of SuperLiga defences because of it. A natural successor to Ferreyra.
FRC: 20. Saturnín Quinteros (24) – Ciudad Soluca
Big things were expected of a forward who caught the attention with a seventy four goal season for one of Ciudad’s many youth teams. Often used as an attacking midfielder at club level by Farías so more of the same could be expected here.
FLC: 23. Gelson Di Santo (30) – Sportivo Soluca
A real find from the Ciudad Soluca academy who was used sparring for both club and country but tends to rise to the opportunity when given it. But he grew tired of being used so sparingly and made a controversial move across the capital.

Style
An attacking and direct 4-2-3-1. Probable starting eleven (Listed L to R)
Medrán -- Abeyta - Fernández - Lucena - Damían -- Defederico (C) - Ramís - - Cifuentés - Ávila - Quinteros -- Ferreyra

Style Modifier = (+4)

Schedule

Big matches are hosted in our rather fancy Nethertopian built 109,000 capacity Estadio Generalissimo Joaquín Delgado in the Sargossan capital of Soluca.

Svenga Squad for the Runner Cup

The Coach: Luke Thompson (The Licentian Islaes) Style Mod: +2

He managed Colesham Athletic previously, but is most famous for his time as co-manager of the Licentian national team, along with Nathan Gardiner-Stewart. He is known as a tactician; while Nathan motivated the team, Luke made the tough personnel decisions that a former player couldn't. Thompson has since proven himself as a solo manager with some fairly successful seasons with Colesham Athletic, and is looking to get back into international management, in the hope that, in the future, he can manage the Cyan-and-Gold solo. He took Svengarda into the group stages of the World Cup for the second time, but will be disappointed that he couldn't take the Ice Hawks any further than the play-offs.

Assistant Coach: Kuri Levallånen (42 years old)

He came into the side in rather unfortunate circumstances. Former Assistant Coach Röben Eriksson, former soldier, has retired from coaching due to the injuries he sustained whilst fighting got worse. Kuri was coach of Stormskamer IGK before taking the assistant coaching role.

Squad

Goalkeepers

Vanja Albertsen (12 caps - 0 goals - 24 y/o - HJK Helsirn)

A new talent rising up through the ranks of the domestic league, Vanja stands at a staggering 6ft 10", and has the natural build for a goalkeeper. Since the retirement of 40 year old Pal Lorsen, Albertsen has had to step up to the plate and keep for the national team. A great physical presence in the box, but sometimes he can lose his position around the goal and leave himself open to mistakes.

Jarmo Jakinen (1 caps - 0 goals - 21 y/o - MTK)

Another young talent with fantastic vision and great hands, but lacks first-team experience and the commanding skills of a keeper. Will be immediate back-up for Albertsen, and the World Cup will be a huge learning curve for him.

Eremeni Saari (1 caps - 0 goals - 26 y/o - Valkeavuoren SK)

The reserve keeper drafted into the squad after Lorsen's retirement, Saari has shown several good performances in the domestic league, and as a reward has gained a place in the World Cup Squad.

Defenders

Tommi Nikula (26 caps - 2 goals - 26 y/o - Helsirn CSKA)

One of the several new young players in the squad, Nikula is regarded as the natural successor to Strostrand. A talented wing back as well as a dominant defender in the box and around. Possessing incredible power and extreme acceleration and having the ability to lay killer crosses, Tommi is always the one to spark a counter-attack.

Reko Saari (43 caps - 2 goals - 37 y/o - PPMPA Korska)

One of the ageing stalwarts in the squad Saari is a big man who creates a big presence in the centre of defence. Saari, despite being one of the elder players, he still has a youthful energy about him. He can also be a threat down the other end of the pitch when it comes to corners and crosses. Seriously ageing now, but has one qualifying campaign left in him.

Georg Raske (62 caps - 2 goals - 35 y/o - GKS Erem) CAPTAIN

Georg went from fringe player in earlier World Cups to team captain, rather surprisingly, in the last edition of the competition. Andfossen announced this shortly before the rest of squad annoucement, much to the surprise of the press and just about every fan in the country. After Strostrand had retired, winger Rihards Ruotsalainen was made favourite to be made captain, with Raske at 250/1. Raske is a brick wall in defence, not known for his pace, but able to shut down any play from any number of attacking players.

Saar Bjørnsen (18 caps - 0 goals - 31 y/o - FCK Lupa)

Bjørnsen long has been tipped to be the new Torbjorn Lindstørm, who led the side to their Baptism of Fire victory. He is bigger than his predecessor, standing at 6ft 4" inches, he is not someone you want to run into at speed. We've seen him in two World Cups, and he hasn't quite fulfilled his huge expectations. He has played one or two blinders, but otherwise he has been average. The fans are expecting big things from this man.

Luka Jarvinen (50 caps - 4 goals - 31 y/o - GKS Erem)

He moves with incredible pace when chasing down opposition attackers, and is always in the right place to block a shot or make that last ditch tackle which he has done plenty of times in the past. Good friends with both Raske and Levallånen, they like to joke around and the occasionally don't take the game entirely seriously.

Mikkel Strand (31 caps - 2 goals - 29 y/o - PPMPA Korska)

He's spent a lot of time warming the bench, wrapped up in the numerous layers of SFA-supplied kit, but this might be his breakthrough, with some very talented performances in the domestic game. When he has played, he has shown an adept ability to use the ball from deep and create situations from defence. If he perhaps gets a bit more game time, he could develop his skills and become a real talent, perhaps playing in Defensive midfield or even Midfield.

Eemil Tähtinen (6 caps - 0 goals - 23 y/o - Helsirn CSKA)

An ex-long distance runner who chose football over athletics, Eemil's epic stamina has already been demonstrated in the Superliga. He can just keep going, hour after hour, week-in-week-out. Although his defensive skills might not earn him a regular starting place, he has the potential to become the 'super-sub' for the squad, able to fill in every game.

Midfielders

Hakan Lager (45 caps - 4 goals - 33 y/o - Stormskamer IGK)

A dynamic footballer, Hakan is powerful on both the wing and in and around the area. He has been second place to Jazēps Vang in recent times, and it looks to continue like that as Vang has put in some particularly good performances over the last few months. But nevertheless he has everything a good winger needs: pace, power and good passing ability.

Aatu Jokela (13 caps - 2 goals - 22 y/o - Stormskamer IGK)

Another product of the Stormskamer youth system, Aatu is your typical defensive midfielder, hard hitting tackler and great at spying the long balls required to beat the offside trap and release the forwards. Endless energy and stamina mean that he can cover every square inch of the pitch, make a tackle then track back, before running forward with the counter-attack.

Loreen Steffanssen (21 caps - 7 goals - 23 y/o - Rasmussen SK)

Although Women have always been accepted into the men's national side, the appearance of the two Steffansson's (Kari and Loreen, unrelated) is the first occurrence of this. A perfectly all-round footballer, she is considered to be a lot better than her male counter-parts. Height, strength, a good touch and pace are just some of her many assets which make her a great footballer. Young, still only 19, experience might be her only weakness.

Timo Laathi (28 caps - 2 goals - 26 y/o - West Skal City SK)

Former captain of the U21s, Timo is one of the few players who make the leap from U21 regular to first team regular. No one is sure why there aren't more. Timo is a good roving midfielder, who can operate both in a central role or as a winger or attacking midfielder, but can also drop back and defend like a centre back or a sweeper would. Good close control and excellent footwork make him troublemaker for opposition defences, and also has a good close range shooting ability.

Lukas Aarnsen (1 caps - 1 goals - 20 y/o - HIFK)

Having lived most of his life in the Polar Islandstates, Aarnsen used his mother's Svenga heritage to make himself eligible for selection for Svengarda, as it seemed like an easier option. He originally started out as a striker, but found his strength and creativity better served in the midfield.

Jazēps Vang (51 caps - 7 goals - 30 y/o - DGNC Helsingborg)

A versatile midfield player, he likes to experiment with the ball, and will often try outrageous tricks, just to see if they work. When on form, he is unstoppable, every trick seeming to come off and every reverse-spinning-backheel finding its target. Combine this ingenuity with proper winger's pace always make him a joy to watch for any football fan.

Jame Laukkanen (2 caps - 1 goals - 21 y/o - HJK Helsirn)

Another U21s player, Jame combines searing pace with great vision and good ball control to make him into a formidable winger on the pitch. Young, without much experience, he might be asked to drop straight into the national side on the other side of Kari Steffanssen.

Strikers

Truls Waaserson (68 caps - 38 goals - 35 y/o - Morata Valley (Vilita)

Svengarda's goal factory, and main source of goals for the entire Andfossen regime. A superb first and final touch make Truls deadly as soon as he picks up the ball in the area. He works a lot off his team, taking crosses from the wingers and through-balls from midfielders, and works well by himself or with fellow strikers. In this case, he will be working in front of Svein Danielsen/Kari Steffansson as the sole striker. Another player coming to the end of the line, he will want to finish with one last qualification.

Svein Danielsen (54 caps - 19 goals - 31 y/o - Ferdullaele FC (Farfadillis)

A striker on the same par as Truls Waaserson when it comes to goal scoring ability, but Svein has had to live most of his footballing life in the attacking-midfield role, and that's where he'll play for this WC. Good speed and strength make him ideal for this role, as well as the skill of placing a pass, which is key for playing a single striker. Making a name for himself overseas in Farfadillis, scoring more goals for Ferdullaele FC than the legendary Val Kylx.

Serko Jansen (19 caps - 7 goals - 26 y/o - FCK Lupa)

Serko has gained his place on the merit of his domestic performances for FCK Lupa. His appearance in the side is much to the distaste of the player he replaced; Boghos Danielsen. Serko doesn't expect much play, but when he does, he adds an element of the sublime to his play, and has a habit for scoring some quite brilliant goals, from 25-yard screamers to deft chips.

Kari Steffanssen (9 caps - 3 goals - 23 y/o - DGNC Helsingborg)

The second of the Steffanssen's (again, not related) in the squad, Kari is a small and nimble winger/attacking midfielder, using her surging pace and lightning quick feet to create trouble for any defence. Her ability to get into small spaces in the box always makes her a nuisance to opposition.
