Ligue de Football Jaspecois: Saison 1

In the nation of Jaspec, there are only two things to do on Sundays: go to Church, and watch football. Professional football is the most popular sport in the country, and borders on a national obsession. The capital city, St-Jean-Baptiste, all but shuts down at 1:00pm when its two teams in the LFJ are playing, those same scenes can be found across the country. A common saying in the deeply-religious nation is that 'football is the only business open on Sundays.' The game is popular amongst both the Jaspecois (French-speakers) and Jaspecers (English-speakers) in the country, and the top 16 clubs in the nation compete to win the National Championship. For this season, we'll provide you with simply the results of the season, but in the future expect full analysis of all teams and matches. Here are the regular season results!

Ligue de Football Jaspecois Pld W D L Win %
1 Thurso Foreurs 15 11 0 4 0.733 Leclerc Trophy (Regular Season Champions)
2 Trois-Pistoles .45s 15 10 1 4 0.700
3 Ste-Isabelle Expos 15 9 2 4 0.667
4 St-Jean-Baptiste Bleu et Blanc 15 9 1 5 0.633
5 Acton Vale Maple Leafs 15 9 0 6 0.600
6 Charlesbourg Zèbres 15 9 0 6 0.600
7 Sacre-Couer 15 8 2 5 0.600
8 Kamouraska Aigles 15 8 1 6 0.567 Séries éliminatoires/Playoffs

9 Temiscouata Mooseheads 15 6 4 5 0.533
10 Ironpool Rangers 15 6 0 9 0.400
11 St-Narcisse Harfangs 15 6 0 9 0.400
12 La Pocatiere Whalers 15 5 1 9 0.367
13 Frontenac Rouge et Or 15 5 0 10 0.333
14 St-Maurice Drakkar 15 4 2 9 0.333
15 Beauharnois Faucons 15 4 0 11 0.267
16 Riviere-du-Loup Chasseurs 15 3 2 10 0.267

The Thurso Foreurs take the Leclerc Trophy as regular season champions. The Foreurs, from a small mining town in western Jaspec, had a dominant offence led by QB Luc Deschenes, who threw for the most yards in the nation in his third professional year. That earned him another MVP Trophy as well this season. Behind the Foreurs were the Trois-Pistoles .45s, whose QB Jean-Marc Michaud earned a great reputation for himself this season as a high-IQ player, seemingly able to read almost any play. The Ste-Isabelle Expos were next, it wasn't any great individual effort that propelled the Expos there but instead a strong team effort. The St-Jean-Baptiste Bleu-et-Blanc, the best-supported and most famous team in the nation, from the capital, finished 4th in the regular season. Aging QB Pierre Lachance had another strong season, but there are doubts about his ability to lead Les Paysans to another National Championship title. Behind them are the Acton Vale Maple Leafs, one of the 'Big 2' teams from English-speaking Jaspec. The Maple Leafs and their rookie QB Jack Bell had a solid 9-6 season, they will renew hostilities with one of their biggest rivals the Bleu-et-Blanc in the postseason. The Zèbres finished in 6th place on the season, RB Hugo Lemieux led the nation in rushing yards but their defence was not a particularly bright spot. Rounding out the postseason lineup is Sacre-Couer, the eternal rivals of the Bleu-et-Blanc as both sides originate in our nation's capital. Sacre-Couer had a down year from their usual standards, with top WR Marcel Lucien out with an injury for the first 10 weeks of the year. They've picked up form of late, however, and could be a dangerous team in the playoffs. The Kamouraska Aigles secured the last spot in the playoffs, the Aigles led by a brilliant defensive effort and perhaps the best cornerback in the league in Stephane Rigeau. Let's check out the season awards, and then move onto the playoffs!

Season Awards
MVP: Luc Deschenes, QB (Thurso Foreurs)
Offensive Player of the Year: Lucien Margot, WR (Thurso Foreurs)
Defensive Player of the Year: Stephane Rigeau, CB (Kamouraska Aigles)
Rookie of the Year: Jack Bell, QB (Acton Vale Maple Leafs)

National Championship Playoffs: First Round

Thurso Foreurs 37-27 Kamouraska Aigles
Trois-Pistoles .45s 37-7 Sacre-Couer
Ste-Isabelle Expos 21-23 Charlesbourg Zèbres
Ste-Jean-Baptiste Bleu et Blanc 26-27 Acton Vale Maple Leafs

There were some great football games in this first round of the playoffs. The Foreurs came back from a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter against the Aigles to take what was in the end not as exciting a game it had promised earlier. Lucien Margot had a hat-trick of touchdown catches, his chemistry with Luc Deschenes a key advantage for the Foreurs as they advance through the playoffs. The Foreurs started slow, however, and will have no room to do so in the rest of the playoffs. The Trois-Pistoles .45s, usually quite a defensively-sound team, did all that and more in their game against Sacre-Couer: the visitors were limited to 7 points, while the .45s exploded for a season-high 37 points, QB Michaud throwing for 340 yards. The Zèbres pulled off the first upset of the round, as a late field-goal kick from Quentin Auriger was enough to give them the 23-21 win over the Ste-Isabelle Expos. Finally, in one of the most memorable playoff games in recent history, QB Jack Bell and the Maple Leafs proved you can win with kids, as they knock out their rivals the Bleu-et-Blanc in a stunning 27-26 win. Down 27-14, the Leafs scored a touchdown but failed to convert the 2 point attempt. On the last play of the game, a Hail Mary from Bell was caught by Jamie Chambers and rushed into the end zone for a spectacular finish and victory for the Maple Leafs. In the second round, the Thurso Foreurs will take on the Charlesbourg Zèbres while the Trois-Pistoles .45s take on the Acton Vale Maple Leafs. A place in the National Championship Game will be on the line.

National Championship Playoffs Semi-Final

Thurso Foreurs 47-10 Charlesbourg Zèbres
Trois-Pistoles .45s 10-30 Acton Vale Maple Leafs

The Foreurs shut down any criticism of their slow start against the Aigles this week, heading into the halftime up 30-7 over the Zèbres. They then limited the visitors to only a field goal in the second half as they achieved a dominant 47-10 victory to head to the National Championship Game. Luc Deschenes had perhaps the best game of his young career so far, and the Foreurs seemed to reach a new level of excellence beyond what had already been offered up this season. In the other semi-final, the storybook run of a young Maple Leafs team continues as they reach the National Championship Game thanks to a great 30-10 win over the .45s. Jack Bell had a brilliant game against a usually tricky .45s defence, and the Leafs' play calling was great as they exploited any weakness they could find. The running game and throwing game were in sync, and it led to a beautiful night for Leafs fans.

So, who will be National Champions? It's a battle of young blood in the league, as Luc Deschenes and Jack Bell go head to head. The Foreurs are certainly the favourites in this game, and looked near-perfect in the win over Charlesbourg. The Foreurs feel confident that their offense will do enough for them, and having scored a total of 84 points this post-season, that's a feeling based in fact. The Maple Leafs are the underdog, but have now overcome adversity twice against the Bleu-et-Blanc and the .45s. Jack Bell, already Rookie of the Year and seen as a great prospect for the future, is suddenly a great player now. The Leafs have to be happy with how they've played against tough defences in the Bleu-et-Blanc and .45s, scoring 57 points in their games. Now, against a weaker defence in the Foreurs, the Leafs will need to have the game of their lives. If their defence can't hold back the highest-flying offence in the nation, however, it will be all for naught.

National Championship Final

Thurso Foreurs 17-27 Acton Vale Maple Leafs

And the Maple Leafs are champions! Defensive coordinator Pierre Polet deserves a mountain of praise for this one, as the Leafs' D-line shut down the Foreurs limiting them to their 2nd-lowest score of the season. Cornerback Mark Kennedy was named the MVP of the Final for his performance in one of the greatest defensive displays of all-time in a LJF Championship game. The Foreurs took the lead first with a field goal, before Jack Bell drove for two touchdowns in the first quarter, putting the Leafs up 14-3 at the end of the first. The Foreurs were frustrated by the Leafs' defence again, and were limited to only 1 touchdown in the first half as the halftime score sat at 17-10 Leafs. An early field goal in the third quarter for the Leafs gave them some breathing room, and then in the late stages of that same quarter, Jack Bell connected with tight end John Howerton for a touchdown pass. There was suddenly real belief in Acton Vale and among the Leafs fans inside the Stade Nationale in St-Jean-Baptiste. Up until that point, most Acton Vale supporters had believed this to be a great run in Bell's first season, now, they expected to be champions. Up 27-10, the defence had a clear task in the fourth quarter: stop Deschenes. They did so to near-perfection, allowing the Foreurs one touchdown in the fourth. In the end, the Acton Vale Maple Leafs stand as national champions. Jack Bell becomes the first rookie QB to lead his team to a National Championship, and the future is quite bright for young Bell. While most expected the Leafs to have a competitive team this year, few would have expected them to win the Championship. It could be a golden era for the Acton Vale Maple Leafs, and it all started here. Congratulations to the Leafs and all their supporters in Acton Vale!

Next season, LJF teams will also take part in international competition, joining the Champion's Bowl. The four teams participating in the Champion's Bowl will be the four semi-finalists from the playoffs. Thus, representing Jaspec on the world stage are:

Jaspec (JPC) Qualifiers:
Acton Vale Maple Leafs
Thurso Foreurs
Trois-Pistoles .45s
Charlesbourg Zèbres

Best of luck to our teams on the world stage, and again congratulations to the Acton Vale Maple Leafs!

5th Champions' Bowl
Signups for the sixth Champions' Bowl are open! The deadline is 10-Jan-2020, 21:00 CEST.
Host bids for the Champions' Bowl Final are also accepted until 10-Jan-2020, 21:00 CEST.

The format remains the same:
- 4 teams per nation.
- No coefficients, though RP bonus will be applied which resets per Champions' Bowl
- The preferred format is as follows:
-- A qualification round with the lowest seeded teams (teams noted 4th in the signups, or occasionally 3rd teams as well), randomly drawn, to get a nice number for the First Round (16, 32, etc)
-- First Round, Second Round, Quarterfinal, Semifinal: one single knock-out match
-- Final: one single knock-out match, on neutral ground, stadium host bids may be included with signups.
- Teams from the same league will not be drawn to play each other in the Playoff Rounds or in Round 1.

6th Champions' Bowl

Here's your cutoff for the 6th Champions' Bowl!

... is what I would have said, because the deadline is today. Seeing as we only have one signup, I'd hereby like to extend the deadline for three weeks, giving everyone time to scorinate. As the NSCF and the World Bowl are also starting up a cycle, this coincides nicely. Consider this the warning for the next deadline: 31-Jan-2020, 21:00 CET.

Presenting the New Army Stadium, home of the CSKA Tiraspol football and gridiron teams along with the Pridnestrovian national football and gridiron teams

New Army Stadium is, as its name suggests, the second stadium to be named Army Stadium in the city of Tiraspol. It and its predecessor have served as the home for the CSKA Tiraspol football club for over 100 years. The New Army Stadium was constructed on the site of the old stadium in order to provide the fans of CSKA with a home stadium that complies with modern safety standards while maintaining the rich and noisy atmosphere that has come to characterize the fanbase of the capital club. when CSKA Tiraspol established its gridiron football section, they also took up residence in the New Army Stadium, and fans immediately flocked in droves. The New Army Stadium has also served as the site of the Pridnestrovian Bowl, the final game of the season which determines the champion of the Pridnestrovian Gridiron Super League.

Herzegovina City Cobras (BNJ) 7 14 3 7 31

7th Champions' Bowl
Signups for the seventh Champions' Bowl are open! The deadline is 22-May-2020, 21:00 CEST.
Host bids for the Champions' Bowl Final are also accepted until 22-May-2020, 21:00 CEST.
