International Domestic Gridiron Football Newswires

Postby Free Republics » Fri Feb 14, 2014 11:08 am

This thread is the successor to the old International Domestic American Football Newswire, created so that I would have control over the thread OP, since I'm going to be bringing this back.

This is the place to post the results from your domestic American football, Canadian football and/or Arena football league(s). You can generate results for your league with a scorinator, such as NSFS3 or xkoranate. If you use xkoranate, you may be interested in the xkoranate files for the World Bowl XXII formula and for Arena Football (which includes both Shadowbourne's modified NSFS3 formula for Arena football and my modified World Bowl XXII formula for Arena football). Those files should be placed inside of xkoranate's sports folder. OOC discussion should be placed in the Discussion Thread.

The World Association of Gridiron Football Clubs (WAGFC) tournaments are held in this thread. These include the Champions Bowl and the Iron Cup. The Champions Bowl is a tournament for American and Canadian football champions, held under American rules. The Iron Cup is a tournament for Arena football champions, held under Arena football rules. You can enter these tournaments by listing your nation's qualifiers in a box, as follows:
Exampleland (XYZ) qualifiers
Champions Bowl: Exampletown, Example City, Exampleston
Iron Cup: Exampler, Exampleville

All nations may enter up to 3 teams in the Champions Bowl and up to 2 teams in the Iron Cup, so long as they scorinate at least a season per every 2 seasons of the WAGFC. The results or a link to the results must be posted in this thread. Following season 1, some nations may be permitted to enter additional teams, at my discretion. Nations located within World Changers may enter up to 4 teams in the UWCFA Gridiron League, in addition to their WAGFC entries. Other regions may run their own regional championships, although I will not be scorinating them. Regional qualifiers should be placed inside of the same qualifiers box. Multi-nation leagues may enter the equivalent number of teams for their first 2 nations. The 3rd and 4th nations in the league will only provide the league with 1 additional entry. No additional entries will be provided, beyond that, to leagues containing 5 or more nations. The per-nation limits still apply to multi-nation leagues (so, both nations in a 2 nation league may enter their 3 best teams in the Champions Bowl, while in a 3 nation league, the best 7 teams may be entered, so long as no more than 3 are from the same nation). A separate qualifiers box should be used for each nation of a multi-nation league. Other regions may organize their own regional tournaments within this thread. I will not be imposing a hard limit on number of puppets per user, although I reserve the right to exclude excessive puppet entries at my discretion. I also reserve the right to change these entry limits or impose additional restrictions on puppets, at any time, based upon activity levels. Entries which are posted in an incorrect format may be missed or, at my discretion, rejected altogether.

At this moment, I will not be announcing a deadline for the first season of WAGFC competition. When I announce the first deadline, I will provide at least 7 days notice prior to the cutoff. Site bids for the Champions Bowl and Iron Cup title games are desired and should be posted in this thread. Only bids from WAGFC members will be considered. Sponsorship requests may also be posted in this thread and will be considered by WAGFC on a case-by-case basis.

Since the World Cup will not be starting for several more weeks, the entry deadline for the first season of the WAGFL will be on Wednesday March 12th at 6 PM North American Eastern Time.

This is also a reminder that the Champions Bowl and the Iron Cup are tournaments for separate sports. The Champions Bowl is for American or Canadian football. The Iron Cup is for Arena football. As the links to the Arena football scorinators and the World Bowl XXII formula scorinators are down, I have re-posted them (on Rule Theriault's new Google account, to ensure this problem doesn't repeat itself).

Season 13 Link to domestic newswires

The end of Season 13 came just in time for the Champions' Bowl and Iron Cup: after years and years, a few individuals dared to unite the world's Gridiron leagues into one big championship. And no doubt that Ko-orenite teams seek to do well here: they haven't sat still while there was no international championship. Over the past few years, the Gridiron league established itself as the third most important league to the Ko-orenites: 30 teams, from all over the country, and a season that lasts 19 weeks: not long enough to interfere with the - still more popular - football league or baseball league, not too short that people won't notice it. Just as a reminder: fans do not need to spend much on the first 10 weeks, where each team plays only the other members of its conference. One game at home, one on the road against each of the five conference opponents, and counting your team, that makes six teams per conference, five conferences, and we are back to 30 teams. After the conference titles are handed out (and so far there are only seven teams left that have never won their conference), the top two teams play another nine games in the Top League, the two that finish third and fourth will play against all other third and fourth finished teams in the Middle League, and even the two bottom teams have some face to save in the Low League. It has to be said: a Low League title, at the end of the road, is still more important than a conference title. Not just because conference titles are handed out five times per season and the Low League title only once.

As for the local rules: a game can end with a tie. Both in the Conference and in the League. Not that they happen often, of course - the 13th season saw four ties in the Conference phase and 13 in the League phase. A draw counts as half a win, which means that one tie can push one team up to the Top League and clinch the title despite the second place in the Conference, or it can push another team down to the Low League.

Some influential teams that have emerged over the last few seasons: the international community has not seen Ko-orenite teams in a while, as long as someone doesn't follow the KNGL, and some teams can be considered pretty strong - and their fans expect something in the Champions' Bowl. Parity is pretty important in the KNGL, so a team that completes one season ranked 6th in the Conference can go 1st next time. Still, the Endev Explosions are a team to fear, but the same goes for their Conference mates Tireniun Wai. The Mazaj Monos, from the Northeastern Conference, arguably the strongest in the League, are another influential team - even though the Alara Astronauts, also from the Northeastern Conference, have won more Top League titles and the Ko-oren Capitals have, so far, clinched the conference most often (5, while the Monos are one of those teams that have zero Conference titles). From the Northern Conference, the Dollars often come out on top. The Eastern Conference have Uzhotu Reflect as powerhouse in the Conference phase, though the Hogone Tortoises have won more titles when the Leagues come around. The Southern Conference is a funny story: Tangku City Isis is the team with the most Conference titles: 7 (out of a possible 12: the first season had no conferences), and Norilya Kaspan is the only team with any League title (though it is the Low League). This makes the Southern Conference the weakest conference on paper... only they are not in practice.

Now on to Ko-orenite National Gridiron League Season 13.

In the Northern Conference, Loa and Jeknolr ended up with 7 victories and that meant that End, with six wins (!) ends up in the Middle League. Jeknolr have their superior O-line to thank for that, especially after the 36-14 win over Enlifl End. Still, with that big defeat, End managed to keep the rest of the teams at bay and has the best defense this season, this conference.

The Ko-oren Capitals win another Conference title in the Northwest, taking the Monos with them to the Top League. With an average of 14.4 points conceded per game, the Monos certainly could be the best defense of this season so far. The Capitals have the best offense, losing just three games (against the Monos, Maethoru '65 and the surprising 21-7 loss to the Astronauts: often a strong team, but this time they'll have to make do with the Low League with their 6th place).

The Southwest had a surprising season. Wai in last place, the State Skies in second place and thereby the Top League, and four teams on a .500 or higher win percentage. Two draws in this conference as well, with Wai taking part in both of them (10-10 to the State Skies, 21-21 to the Explosions). Interestingly, they lost a few curious games, but they managed to tie against both Top League qualifying teams.

The South was 'dominated' by four teams: even fourth-placed Ursannun Silver had a win percentage of .500. Then again, the South is 'blessed' with having the arguably worst team in the league in their conference: the Kastundun Kytes. Tangku City Isis takes their seventh conference title, unrivaled by any of the 30 teams in the entire league. The Leafs, on .600, finish third and have to go to the Middle League. Their final matchday loss to Kaspan (28-31) did them in.

Lastly, the Eastern Conference saw Kangutsu State Shells take the highest win percentage of all teams (.800), with the Tortoises just behind them on .700. No real surprises in this conference, although the Shells' offense has something to prove in the Top League: 23 points per game on average, which makes them the second best of all 30 teams (behind the Leafs' 24.7 per game). Their defense was nothing too special, but the high scoring game against the Tortoises (42-36) did a number on both teams' defensive records.

And then it was time for the League Phase. Starting with the Low League, which, as always, has some surprising names: the Astronauts, Destroyers, Wai and the Talking Trees. But neither of them took the title: it was Vajothl Victory, taking one for the Northwestern Conference. The defense won it for them, losing just one game in nine while allowing not more than 12.6 points to be scored against them per game.

In the Middle League, things were exciting. Two teams went neck-to-neck until the final matchday. Their own game against each other was scheduled for match day 5, and they tied 17-17. In the end, Moonlight looked to drop out of the title race with a costly 10-37 loss to the Swans, but the Emperors lost 7-3 to the Roses on the final match day, allowing Moonlight to retake first place. Also, we have two teams that have a very balanced defense-offense: both the Leafs and the Swans (3rd and 4th place) finished with a PD of 0.

Now for the Top League. The absolute champion of the Ko-orenite Gridiron season. Two representatives from all five conferences, and the Southwest had better representatives than any other conference. Their 'worst' team finished fourth in the Top League (Aj Uin State Skies), and their top team, the Endev Explosions, won the championship. But only barely: Mazaj Monos were close to be the first team ever to win two consecutive championships, and they finished second. The Monos and the Capitals, from the Northwestern conference, also proved to be a tough Conference to beat: they finished 2nd and 5th overall.

To prove that the Leagues actually do contribute to the league structure: anyone can win. In fact, all teams are so close together that the best win percentage achieved in any league this season is by Victory, on .700 (though with 6 wins and 2 draws). Moonlight won the Middle League with a measly .550! And that is not all: the Explosions, while winning the title, ended up with a negative PD!

Ko-oren (KOR) Qualifiers
Champions Bowl: Endev Explosions, Mazaj Monos, Tangku City Isis
Iron Cup: Vnoskjulung Moonlight, Vajothl Victory

The KGFA has decided to award the two Champions' Bowl places to the three teams that finish first, second and third in the Top League. The Iron Cup places will be awarded to the teams that win the Middle and Low League titles, further making these Leagues more competitive, and making sure that all 30 teams have something to fight for, even when a team goes 0-0-10 after the Conference phase. And, to be fair, there are always teams that fail to qualify for the Top or even the Middle League, are forced to play in the Low League for a season even though their team would be top-10 material, and that way they can still play international Gridiron.

Federational Football League

The Federation of Free Republics claims to be the birthplace of the game of football, as the sport of gridiron is known in the FFR. In the past, each Republic has traditionally maintained their own league and the champions of the many Republics competed for the "World Championship" of the sport. However, with the creation of the WAGFC, a number of businessmen throughout the FFR saw an opening for a new WAGFC-affiliated football league. Thus, the Federational Football League (FFL) was born.

The creators of the FFL quickly decided that they would not limit themselves to the mainland Free Republics. Instead, teams would be established all throughout the Federation and even in now independent nations that were formerly part of the Federation. While the Free Republics has many colonies scattered throughout the multiverse, the FFL's initial teams are located in the mainland FFR, Noburu Taiyou, Irad and Taxachusetts. This entitles the FFL to the maximum number of 8 spots in the Champions Bowl and the league is also entitled to 4 spots in the UWCFA Gridiron League. For the inaugural season, the FFL will consist of 24 teams, comprising 4 divisions of 6 teams each. Every team will play home-and-away against their division rivals, with 5 weeks of divisional games opening the season and the other 5 weeks closing the season. In-between each team will play a game against 2 teams from each of the other 3 divisions, for a total of 16 regular season games. At the end of the season, the 4 divisional champions will be determined by record in divisional games, excluding non-divisional games (OOC: Although the divisions will not be randomly chosen, the order of the teams within the divisions will be randomized and this will determine non-divisional matchups. The top 2 listed teams will play one another, as will the middle 2 and the bottom 2. The division that is listed first will be at home against teams that are listed at the same spot in the order, but away against the teams listed in the opposing spot. This means that the first-listed team in the first-listed division will be at home against all teams listed first and away against all teams listed second. This ensures that all teams play 3 home games and 3 away games for their non-divisional schedule.). The 4 division winners will qualify for the playoffs and will be seeded 1 through 4 based on total record. The 2 strongest division winners will receive a first round bye. 2 "Wild Card" teams will also qualify for the playoffs and will play at the weaker division winners for the final 2 spots in the Semi-Finals. The playoffs will be single elimination throughout, with the winners playing in the FFL Championship Game. Only the FFL Championship Game will be held at a neutral site.

The FFL Teams are:

Northern Division

Baseton Rottweilers (FFR)
Hamilton Codfish (TAX)
Lambridge Sailors (TAX)
New City Bombers (FFR)
New City Monsters (FFR)
Yellow Bay Tornadoes (FFR)

Central Division

Colonial Division

Tohoko Knights (NTY)
Osoko Titans (NTY)
Koyota Dragons (NTY)
Niikata Warriors (NTY)
Tarad Lions (IRD)
Persepola Bulls (IRD)

Due to WAGFC entry rules, only the 3 best performing teams from each political entity will be eligible for the Champions Bowl. Division winners will be guaranteed a WAGFC spot, unless 3 teams from the mainland FFR win their divisions and a wild card team from the mainland FFR goes on to win the championship game, in which case the division winner with the worst record will be excluded.

Other businessmen in the FFR organized the Republican Indoor Football Alliance (RIFA), an indoor football league that uses arena rules. RIFA has only 8 teams, all of them located in the mainland Free Republics, which compete in a double round-robin regular season of 14 games. At the conclusion of the regular season, the top 3 teams qualify for the playoffs. The team that finished second hosts the team that finished third, with the winner of that game advancing to the RIFA Bowl to face the regular season champion. Both teams that compete in the RIFA Bowl are guaranteed a spot in the Iron Cup. The RIFA teams are:

RIFA

Albertope Broncos
Baseton Crusaders
Estonopolis Wildcats
Falkamore Militia
New City Scorpions
Peroxia White Knights
Petrograd Outlaws
Republica Republicans

The tiebreakers for both leagues are:

After 5 weeks, only the Tohoko Knights remained unbeaten in the FFL. Only the Knights had successfully swept their entire division the first time around. In fact, the Colonial Division had a team at every possible record at the halfway point of divisional play. The Northern Division, by contrast, had 3 4-1 teams, including both Lambridge and Hamilton. Surprisingly, the SunRays had gone 0-5 so far this season and the Yellow Bay Tornadoes had also struggled. This just wasn't the level of performance that they were accustomed to.

The unbeaten run of the Tohoko Knights finally came to a crushing halt at the hands of the Hamilton Codfish during the final Non-Divisional Week. Although the score was 7 to 6 after the first quarter, Hamilton would score 24 unanswered points in the following 3 quarters and cruise to a 31 to 6 victory against a former unbeaten. This leaves Hamilton tied for first place in the Wild Card standings with the Knights and the Koyota Dragons, but it was still too early to think about clinching a Wild Card berth. The New City Bombers were especially abysmal. They had lost all 11 games and had scored just 35 points while conceding 455. The Bombers had already been shut out 6 times on the season, with all 6 shutouts having taken place within the last 8 weeks. In fact, 26 of their 35 points had been scored in their first 3 games. They were just flat out terrible.

The Central Division came down to the game between Mortonsville and Borotia at the very end of the season. Both teams were level at 26 after 60 grueling minutes, but Mortonsville led off overtime with a touchdown before intercepting the Ninja quarterback to win the division. Elsewhere, Petrograd, Lambridge and Tohoko won their divisions, albeit with much more impressive records. In the end, a 13-3 record was required just to obtain a Wild Card berth, as neither Hamilton nor Koyota could manage to win their division. The New City Bombers, in fact, went 0-16 while the Tarad Lions won just 1 game out of 16. Mortonsville made the playoffs with just 8 wins, a surprising feat. The playoff field consisted of 2 teams from Taxachusetts, 2 teams from the mainland FFR and 2 teams from Noburu Taiyou. Also qualifying for the WAGFC were the Persepola Bulls (of Irad) and the Albertope Firebirds (from the mainland FFR). Although the WAGFC field was set, the FFL still had playoffs to play.

#3 Petrograd Tycoons 34–23 #6 Hamilton Codfish
#4 Mortonsville Stallions 24–27 #5 Koyota Dragons

The First Round of the FFL Playoffs saw the Tycoons punch their ticket to Lambridge while the Dragons earned a trip to Tohoko. The winners of the upcoming Semi-Finals would play in the first FFL Championship Game, to be held in Gem of the Oceans Stadium in Republica. The winner would have the distinction of being the first FFL champion, which was motivation enough for the 4 remaining teams.

Tohoko Knights 3–23 Koyota Dragons
Lambridge Sailors 37–20 Petrograd Tycoons

The Dragons stunned the Knights to take a spot in the championship game while the Sailors were in a dogfight with the Tycoons. While the score appeared lopsided, it was actually close until the 4th quarter when the Sailors pulled away. This set up a championship game between the Dragons and the Sailors. A championship game between a team from Taiyou and a team from Taxachusetts. To make things even more controversial, Hera-Cola decided to broadcast a commercial during the Championship Game where the National Anthem was being sung in a number of different languages, with English being just one of many. However, there was still a football game to be played in Republica, even if none of the Republican teams were playing.

Koyota Dragons 31–36 Lambridge Sailors

In a thriller, the Sailors eventually defeated the Dragons, with a late touchdown run. The 2 point conversion attempt failed, but the Sailors were the inaugural FFL champions.

Since I forgot about the original deadline for the WAGFC, I will be extending the deadline until Monday, March 17th at Noon (North American East Coast time). That is just over 41 hours from the time of this post.

Royal Gridiron League

In the interest of strengthening the Saintland National Gridiron Team more competitive, King Petrus XX has established a professional gridiron league in the Kingdom of Saintland. The RGL will consist of 8 teams and will play a double round-robin season, with no playoffs except as needed to determine the champion or to determine WAGFC qualification. This league will take place under Saintland ("Canadian") Rules.

Athleticus St. Petrus had a 2 game lead over both Civitate Dei Junctus and St. Marcus with 3 to go, but 2 days later they had blown that lead. On the final day, Civitate Dei Junctus picked up a 33 to 23 victory over St. Marcus and Athleticus St. Petrus defeated St. Paulus Junctus to finish in a tie for first place. That meant that both teams would play in a Championship Game at Royal Stadium to determine who would be the RGL champion. Both of them (and St. Marcus) had already qualified for spots in WAGFC competition, but the RGL needed a champion.

Civitate Dei Junctus 25–32 Athleticus St. Petrus

It came down to the wire, but Athleticus St. Petrus would knock down a Civitate Dei Junctus pass into the end zone with time expired and win the first RGL championship.

I know I'm an hour late, but I'll be cutting off the first season now. The format will be tweaked for next season.

Due to the lack of site bids for the Champions Bowl final, it will be held at the Gem of the Oceans Stadium in Republica, Free Republics. Due to the lack of interest in the Iron Cup, I have decided to cancel it.

There are 20 entries to the first Champions Bowl, from 8 associations. Until the final, the format calls for home-and-away games, with the away points rule in effect, and no overtime. In the event that scores are tied after both legs have been played and the away points rule cannot break the tie, sudden death overtime will be in use (OOC: I will scorinate a third game, at a neutral site. If the difference in score is 10 points or less, I will award a field goal to the winner. If it is more, I will award a touchdown without a conversion to the winner.). The final will be a single game, to be played at the chosen site for the final, and IFAF overtime rules will be in effect. Since the number of entries necessitates 12 first round byes, the lowest finishing team from each of the 8 participating associations will participate in the First Round.

Congrats to Tangku City Isis on winning the inaugural Champions Bowl.

A preliminary deadline for entries to Champions Bowl II is set for May 19th, 2014. This is subject to change. Each association may enter up to 4 teams in the Champions Bowl, an increase from 3. Multi-associational leagues may enter 4 entries for the first association, an additional 2 for the second association and an additional entry for both the third and the fourth associations, provided that no more than 4 are entered from any given association. Therefore, entry limits for multi-associational leagues are effectively unchanged, except for an increase in the per association limit.

The WAGFC will be accepting (IC) site bids for the final of Champions Bowl II and sponsorship offers. The deadline for bids will be the same as the entry deadline.

Quebec Football League: 2017 Season

Regular Season

West Division Pld W L PF PA PD
1 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 20 13 7 305 209 +96
2 Attawapiskat Rangers 20 12 8 179 128 +51
3 Kingston Argonauts 20 12 8 318 290 +28
4 Montreal Alouettes 20 10 10 289 272 +17
-------------------------------------------------------------
5 Abitibi Wolves 20 9 11 271 297 −26
6 Ottawa Renegades 20 4 16 186 352 −166

The surprise of West Division was Winnipeg, who had everything working in offence to make their way to the top, while Rangers had their defence shutting things pretty well for them, with a very low figure of 6.04 points/game. Rangers, modeling their game after the Ko-orenite National Team, stood above the injury-ridden Argonauts and inconsistent Alouettes. Abitibi showed promise, but still showed their leafs as they failed to make the playoffs, while Ottawa was plain bad.

East Division Pld W L PF PA PD
1 Saint John Steelers 20 17 3 371 201 +170
2 Quebec Voyageurs 20 13 7 326 292 +34
3 Gaspe Impulse 20 11 9 329 260 +69
4 Labrador Roughriders 20 8 12 172 158 +14
--------------------------------------------------------------
5 Newfoundland Highlanders 20 6 14 258 416 −158
6 Iqaluit Thanatos 20 5 15 165 294 −129

Saint John Steelers profited off a record-breaking season by Seong Min Lee, who recorded 4,000 yards in season passing yards this season to set the benchmark of a proper Q-League Quarterback. They had their offence clicking for them and with Michael Lewis on charge kept the defense tight as well. On the contrary
Adrian Meriwether stood tall in Voyageurs, receiving season-leading 19 touchdowns to mark his 15th season in QFL, 10th of which he spent in Quebec City. Impulse bounced back from what was a disappointing season while Roughriders were dominant in home games but couldn't score enough to place highly in the standings. Newfoundland and Labrador meanwhile suffered through what was a very strong East Division this year, as the former allowed league-high 416 points thanks to their patchhole defence, while latter simply got slaughtered in offensive aspect of the game.

Playoffs

Division Semifinals
Winnipeg Blue Bombers 19–7 Montreal Alouettes
Attawapiskat Rangers 24–16 Kingston Argonauts

Saint John Steelers 3–0 Labrador Roughriders
Quebec Voyageurs 27–27 Gaspe Impulse (37–34 OT)

Division Final
Winnipeg Blue Bombers 0–0 Attawapiskat Rangers (6–3 2OT)
Saint John Steelers 31–17 Quebec Voyageurs

Imperial Bowl

The Imperial Bowl game was at its all-time height. The omnipotent Steelers were facing against dark horses in Blue Bombers, both of whom had excellent offence and decent defense to cruise their way to the ultimate showdown. The Iqaluit Stadium was filled with fans of either Blue and Gold, or Silver and White, with the whole day rotating around the festivities surrounding the 131st Imperial Bowl Game. Everyone was ready for it.

The First two quarters were rather dull, as Seong Min Lee put forward a Touchdown early to create a 7-0 lead, which would then increase with a field goal to 10-0. Bombers, towards the end of second quarter, made a comeback with a Touchdown off a nasty interception, but the Steelers were pretty far away, with a 11-8 lead to put forward.

Entering the third quarter a huge question was put on for the Blue Bombers: Will they stay in the game or fall apart? Fortunately, they found a way to stay in the game and took over momentum in the third quarter when quarterback Tim Othoko got the passing game going for a pair of TDs and a brief 20-11 lead. But Saint John’s running game took over the rest of the way, eating up the clock with long drives, before converting 2 field goals to make it 20-17 by the end of third quarter.

The Steelers were keeping up the pressure, but the Bombers were holding on to their lead with much desperation. The dam broke however halfway through the fourth quarter, when Raju Chutra found a hole in Bombers' defensive coverage and made a 34-yard breakthrough. Right on same drive Dragomir Visnovky kept his hands out, reaching forward as he managed to crash with a face first, 8-year touchdown through the scrimmage to end the game, and for all.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers 20–23 Saint John Steelers

We have a few surprises or disappointments.
Miedzyzdroje Bulldogs making the playoffs would be a surprise. But them winning their division with a 1st round bye is a really big surprise.
Beardstown Maroons were considered the best team on paper. Them missing the playoffs is a big shock.
Tavernes Vikings were the Alpine Bowl 0 champions scorinated in january. Missing the playoffs is a disappointment.

I wouldn't mind running it, it gives me something to do in my nation's sporting offseasons :)
