BRIEF BIO
There is no major professional hockey league in Neu Engollon, but there is a minor league and a strong university tradition in the sport. The Ibex are pulled from a mix of the two, but most of the stronger players come from Burgunden University or the Ciavno Jackals, the top minor league hockey team. Not initially aggressive by nature during matches, the Alpen players will only take so much goading before they fight back with a vengeance, as is the nature of most Neu Engollians.

Lzherusskia Drawn Against World #1, #10 Squads
Early Reports Indicate Havl, Quebec Teams "Shaking In Their Skates"
Let's be frank - while none of the six groups are what you might call "easy", drawing the undisputed best team in international hockey is an intimidating prospect for any squad, much less the team we recently discovered are not unranked but, at #96 in the world, may as well be. Still, the fact Lzherusskia is ranked makes us an automatic favourite over four of our upcoming nine opponents so, with a little luck and some fortuitous calls, we might just emerge from this World Cup with a record over .500. Here's all the detail we could find on our opponents.
MATCHDAY ONE: LZHERUSSKIA (96) VS. ROYAL KINGDOM OF QUEBEC (10)
This is going to be a slugfest, plain and simple. The Ice Knights have been accused in the past of picking players primarily for their pugilistic prowess over any kind of skill or work ethic, but it's obviously a formula that's been working for them - the #10 ranking doesn't lie. It's a particular nasty game to get drawn first, because Quebec have a reputation as a very aggressive and just as notably, extremely dirty team to play, so not only are we likely going to lose, there's a distinct chance we'll also lose one of our stars in the process.
Prognostication: A lopsided defeat. With luck, it stays only a three-goal deficit.
MATCHDAY TWO: LZHERUSSKIA (96) vs. NOVA ANGLICANA (44)
The campaign won't get much easier here, because the Lions are an irritating little team that a) are incredibly well-disciplined, b) play good defensive hockey of the sort that Spalchik Levitisz demonstrated when they won the domestic championship a few years back and c) are vastly underranked. This is a team that should be a top-twenty side - Kermit Lea, in particular, is a sniper on a level that practically no international team anywhere would turn their nose up at - and the emphasis on discipline means that Aleksander Trapeznikov is going to have to be on the absolute top of his game to score some penalties.
Prognostication: It finishes a one-goal game, but Nova Anglicana take the lead early and don't let it go.
MATCHDAY THREE: LZHERUSSKIA (96) vs. QUAKMYBUSH (36)
I know nobody wants to admit it, but the chances are extremely good that we start off zero-and-three. Unlike the previous two games, this is a confusing one - Quakmybush teams barely appear to care about their conduct on the ice and have been the beneficiary of some ludicrous calls from referees we can only assume were heavily bribed. Nonetheless, they were unranked just two Cups ago, and there is no reason why we can't follow their successes. Goaltender Roger Akerman is getting on in years and as we all know, when goaltenders age their reflexes are the first thing to go.
Prognostication: Refusing to lose three straight, the upset is pulled off.
MATCHDAY FOUR: LZHERUSSKIA (96) vs. HICANA (UR)
FINALLY. We can't comment on the intricacies of the Hicanan roster because this appears to be their first World Cup and they haven't given the rest of the world anything to work with, but the long and short of it is that we're significantly better than an unranked side, and there is no reason to expect we won't emerge from this with a victory.
Prognostication: Not a complete demolition, but the skill level makes itself known in a solid Lzher win.
MATCHDAY FIVE: LZHERUSSKIA (96) vs. HAVL (1)
To be frank, we may as well not even bother turning up for this one and taking the forfeit loss. Havl go into this World Cup looking for an unprecedented fourth straight victory, we're just here to hope for a few wins and seriously, wouldn't it be so much easier if we simply didn't show up? We'd get some more time to recover from a tough start and not risk the players' morale getting shattered by being destroyed.
Prognostication: Defeat, and that's all I'm going to bother saying because anything else will depress me.
MATCHDAY SIX: LZHERUSSKIA (96) vs. MAINEIACS (UR)
We were entertained to see that officials from the Maineiacs hockey programme produced a very pissy little press release whining about how people were treating them as an automatic win. At the risk of tempting fate, we're going to do the same - they can complain all they want but, to be blunt, they don't have any serious international experience and we can hit harder than they can. Again, there is no reason to expect us to completely destroy them because they could well be better than anybody expects, but when in doubt, take the ranked team over the unranked one.
Prognostication: A one-goal win in a scrappy, nasty little game.
MATCHDAY SEVEN: LZHERUSSKIA (96) vs. SVENGARDA (21)
We're hoping that this is a technical fault or a a mistake on the part of somebody at the Svengarda office, but it appears the Ice Hawks' roster consists of twelve players. Bless you guys for your optimism, but there's a reason hockey dogma says you don't substitute goaltenders in and out of the game like you do other players.
Prognostication: If that's an accurate teamsheet, then this is our best shot at an upset. Trading goalies in and out is impossible to do quickly and robs them of any momentum they might be able to build up.
MATCHDAY EIGHT: LZHERUSSKIA (96) VS. SAN JOSE GUAYABAL (UR)
MATCHDAY NINE: LZHERUSSKIA (96) VS. YTTRIBIA (UR)
Thank goodness for two final games against unranked sides. With what we expect to be two wins in two, at least the team can come home with their heads held high as well as some experience of playing against the best teams in the Multiverse. SJG will probably be the sterner test of the two, playing an attacking style not a million miles from our own, but we're confident our top six is capable of matching and beating whatever "skill" players either roster can bring to bear.
Prognostication: A two- and a three-goal win and, if we're really lucky, our first shutout of the tournament.
