This is it. Super-Llamaland's struggle to get into the top ten is peaking. Once unranked underdogs, then, in WBC23, surprise third place finishers in our group. We rose from there, and so far the apex has been WBC26 (where we advanced to the playoffs in a group featuring Zwangzug, Sakurakoku, and Allinlia but then were swept in the Round of 24) and WBC27 (Round of 16, won the group).

Now, it's WBC28 time. We're facing a group that, for the second time, we are expected to advance in. That's new for us. Now, as we are no longer underdogs, we need to capitalize and have a breakout Classic. Can we do it? Let's look at our roster.

Starting Lineup

Bradley, Danks, Earnest, Mills, Moreno, Cameron, Rochester, Addams. Wow.

Honestly. Times are changing in Super-Llamaland. The fantastic "youth movement" that everybody was talking about last Classic is starting to arrive. Jake Earnest is playing right field and batting in the heart of the order. Bryant Moreno moves from eighth to fifth in the order.

And Alex Cameron! His decline's been amazingly horrible since WBC27! A brief timeline:

WBC26 + 3: Wins the triple crown in the LBL, batting .323 with 39 long balls.

WBC27 + 0: Poor performance as team eliminated in Round of Sixteen. Hits .240 with meh power. Sits out a few games with knee issues.

WBC27 + 1: Horrible in the Third International Baseball Slam, batting .182. In the domestic league, Cameron sits out the season.

WBC27 + 2: Bats .264 in the domestic league with twenty-one homers and eighty-nine RBI's in 554 at-bats.

WBC27 + 3: Bats .228 in our domestic league with seven homers and sixty-two RBI's in 350 at-bats. Injuries still plague him.

The key to this WBC could very well be Jake Earnest under pressure. When he wasn't under much pressure, in the LBL last season, he batted .376 with 25 homers. I like this guy!

Pitching
Starting Rotation: Masorka, Lucas, Davis, Lee, Jackson

Meh. We're aging, aren't we?

Relief: Drew Gilson, Nick Carter, Raymond, Carson, Tomas Reynolds, Daye, Irving, Bowden

Bowden still looks sharp. which is good. We see the debuts of Gilson, Carter, and Reynolds here. (Youth Movement!) Plenty of fireballers here! But will Gilson stay in the relief corps? Worry about your job security, Rick Jackson.

Bench: Harkless/Stephenson/Matthews

Roger Harkless is intriguing as a spare outfielder. I think he blossoms into a star this time. Drew Stephenson could take over Alex Cameron's job, which is a lot more intriguing then Roger Harkless.

Overall:
Can we do it? It depends on luck at this point as we're seeded with Strawbee and the Serbian Empire. I don't know, maybe.
PREDICTIONS:
Group One: Maklohi Vai and Vaugania advance
Group Two: Milchama and Ko-oren advance
Group Three: Allinlia and Gregoryisgodistan advance [shocking pick alert!]
Group Four: Zwangzug and Saugeais advance
Group Five: The Sova Empire and Saintland advance
Group Six: Super-Llamaland and Strawbee advance
Group Seven: Equestrian States and Darmen advance
Group Eight: Sangti and Karditan advance

Seeding: Zwangzug, Maklohi Vai, Milchama, Sangti, Equestrian States, Super-Llamaland, Allinlia, The Sova Empire, Ko-oren, Saugeais, Strawbee, Darmen, Saintland, Karditan, Vaugania, Gregoryisgodistan.

Round one:
Zwangzug > Gregoryisgodistan
Maklohi Vai > Vaugania
Milchama > Karditan
Sangti > Saintland
Equestrian States > Darmen
Super-Llamaland > Strawbee
Allinlia < Saugeais
Sova Empire > Ko-oren

Quarterfinal:
Zwangzug > Sangti
Maklohi Vai > Saugeais
Milchama > Super-Llamaland
Sangti < Equestrian States

Semifinal
Zwangzug > Equestrian States
Maklohi Vai < Milchama

Gregoryisgodistan WBC Preview

Gregoryisgodistan is set to take part in their second World Baseball Classic, after failing to make it out of the group stage in the first one. Saintland claims they did not bribe the umpires to make the team lose to Britonisea, but according to Sports Chief Rufus Markel, that is a "suspiciously specific denial."

But that's ancient history now, let's preview the current World Baseball Classic.

Game 1: vs. New Montreal States at Lord Almighty Gregory National Stadium: This is the marquee home game of the tournament right off the bat against the number 7 team in the world. It will be a very tough game for the Bat Slaves and will be one of their biggest challenges of the tournament. They may be able to pull off the monumental upset, but it will be tough. This game will be played in the larger national stadium to accommodate large crowds. Prediction: Loss 7-2

Game 2: at Allinlia, Unknown Stadium: Things get a little easier, facing the number 17 ranked team in the world, but this time, they have to go on the road. The Bat Slaves will probably start 0-2. Prediction: Loss 4-3

Game 3: vs. Thattius, Lord Almighty Gregory Baseball Stadium: Back in the smaller confines of the baseball stadium and facing the 20th best team in the world, the Bat Slaves should be able to pull off the upset here. It will be tough, but Gregoryisgodistan should get its first win of this WBC. Prediction: Win 3-2

Game 4: vs. Preiva, Lord Almighty Gregory Baseball Stadium: Facing an unranked foe at home, the Bat Slaves should roll to victory. This is the easiest game of the first half of the tournament by far. Preidction: Win 10-3

Game 5: at Hicana, Unknown Stadium: Facing off against a newcomer territory of Super-Llamaland, the Bat Slaves will look to make it three in a row. This could be a potential trap game with a trip to NMS coming up next, but the Bat Slaves are too good to be trapped. They have beaten Super Llamaland in the International Baseball Slam, and should easily handle their tiny territory. Prediction: Win 8-1

Game 6: at New Montreal States, Unknown Stadium: The Bat Slaves should be red hot heading into this game, winning at least two, and probably three wins in a row. They should also be plenty experienced by this point. The hosts could face a trap game against a lesser-known team. It will be closer than people think, but Gregoryisgodistan is probably not good enough to pull off the upset. Prediction: Loss 4-3

Game 7: vs. Allinia, Lord Almighty Gregory Baseball Stadium: The Bat Slaves finally return home after two straight on the road. They should be stronger at this point than they were on Match Day 2, and they will have the home field advantage. They could very well pull off the monumental upset. Prediction: Win 5-1

Game 8: at Thattius, Unknown Stadium: The Bat Slaves know they can beat the Thatties, as they will start pejoratively calling their opponents after the first win. They have the confidence to do it again on the road. Result: Win 5-4

Game 9: at Previa, Unknown Stadium: Facing an unknown team, the Bat Slaves can pull this off in their sleep. But that would earn them execution for sleeping on the job. So they will do it while awake. Prediction: Win 13-4

Game 10: vs. Hicana, Lord Almighty Gregory Baseball Stadium Concluding with the Llamian territory again, the Bat Slaves should easily win again at home. Prediction: Win 11-1

Overall result: 7-3, second place in group

Singer HAH1039 to Sing Theme Song for TV Broadcasts

State Sports TV announced today that well-known singer Singer HAH1039 (OOC: not a typo, his name is Singer HAH1039) will sing the Bat Slaves' theme song before every broadcast. For those who missed it during the International Baseball Slam, here is the theme song as written by Lord Almighty Gregory himself (OOC: he actually stole it from Batman, but he claims to have invented it and everyone believes him.)

"NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA BAT SLAVES! NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA BAT SLAVES! BAT SLAVES! BAT SLAVES! BAT SLAVES!"

Singer HAH1039 is best known for his #1 hits "Sing a Song to Greg" and "To Greg With Love."

Time, what is time?

So after firing all their players halfway through last World Baseball Classic and replacing them this time Milchama Baseball just kept the same roster and decided to continue with them because, "Hey they did pretty well." So with that Manager James Merter comes out with the new, same?, Milchama Warrior baseball team as the one from last time.

Of course being ranked number one in the world would provide some pressure but really, at this point, what it means is that Milchama will make the semi-finals, lose, and then win the third place match like always. Whatever man, I'm over it. I'm already angry and this tournament has not begun, so it goes. So it f---ing goes. Uch!

Anyway, here's the roster:

Lineup:
C: George Cloak
1b: Davis Hitch
2b: Arik Ell
3b: Moran Olem
SS: Rory Cunningham
LF: Sammy Mellington
CF: Quentin Vernon

SP: Marty Crainley
SP: Diego Lopez
SP: Arik Ben Kahal

LR: Davis Messt

Bench:
OF: Tommy Aish
1b/C: Gavi Lowe

CF: Target Hawk

Track the Pack: Group 4 Preview
by Marc Baker, International Sports Correspondent, Lupinia Tribune

The New Wolfopolis Wolfpack heads into their second World Baseball Classic on Friday. They have been placed in Group 4, which has been predicted by some to be "ruthless". Whatever the opinions are, it pits together 3 former hosts, Zwangzug, Saugeais, and Qazox. Also in Group 4 are Patistan and Mizuyuki, both unranked. Here is a preview on what is to come for the Wolfpack during group play.

#2 Zwangzug: The Zebras, two-time WBC Champions, are currently the second-seeded team in the entire world. They looked tough to beat last Classic as they won group 12, going 8-0 in group play and claiming the #1 seed going into the playoffs. They lost in the semifinal round to the eventual third place team, Milchama.

#15 Saugeais: Current President of the WBC Council, Saugeais is no small name. They didn't perform at the highest calibur last year, claiming third place in a tough group 11 (therefore not qualifying for the playoffs) that included eventual champion Strawbee. Although their last finish wasn't all that great, the Rangers are not to be taken lightly.

#23 Qazox: The three-time WBC winners are back again this year. In the most recent edition of the classic, Qazox went 4-4 during group play to claim 4th place in Group 4 which included tough opponents like Milchama. Although the Wolves haven't won it all since their consecutive victories in WBCs 8 and 9, they are poised to make a run this year.

Patistan, Mizuyuki: These teams are the two unranked in the group. Not much is known about either team, but what is known is that our Wolfpack can't go to sleep just because they're playing an unranked team. New Wolfopolis was unranked last year and did better than Qazox and Saugeais. Ranks don't mean anything.

Prediction: It'll be a tough group. New Wolfopolis faces three tough, experienced teams and two young, hungry teams. Seems they're caught in the middle. I predict Zwangzug to take the group, Qazox to advance, Saugeais to take third, and New Wolfopolis to come in fourth. It will be tough to overcome the experienced teams in our group, and in the end, I doubt we will. You never know, though. Last year, as an unranked team, we beat ranked teams Free South Califas and Cassadaigua, both twice, to claim second in the group and advance. We'll just have to wait and see.

On Friday, the Wolfpack will be taking on the Zwangzug Zebras, at LTC Ballpark @ Lupinia Pavilion, in Lupinia. The game will also be televised on NWSN.

The schedule for the 28th World Baseball Classic was announced and in turn, Brianna Bruce announced the rotation for the group stage. The Group 7 schedule and rotation: (OOC: Stadiums for those that have posted will be added later.)

MD1: vs. Equestrian States at Riverside Stadium, St. Catherine - Clifford Nash HOF Ceremony Pregame (Sam Fitzpatrick)
MD2: vs. Mosktopia at Riverside Stadium (Tom Benson)
MD3: at San Jose Guayaba, Complejo Deportivo de Piedra Labrada, Piedra Labradal (Paul Lawrence)
MD4: vs. UJMSM at Charles Davis Stadium, Charlestown - "Blue-Out" Game (Paul Bray)
MD5: at Darmen, Carson Park, Eau Claire (Fitzpatrick)
MD6: at Equestrian States, TBD (Benson)
MD7: at Mosktopia, Hal Worthington Park, North Bay (Lawrence)
MD8: vs. San Jose Guayabal at Flood City Stadium, Taylorville (P. Bray)
MD9: at UJMSM (Fitzpatrick)
MD10: vs. Darmen at Riverside Stadium - "Black-Out" Game (OOC: We will use our alternate third jerseys - naturally, black - for this game.) (Benson)

It was somewhat surprising that the veteran Benson did not get the game one start until it was revealed that he would get the final game's start against Darmen, the #8 team in the world. Of course, as has been Blue Jay custom, the final games may change if they have already clinched who starts.

Team Name - Ko-orenite National Team (nickname: Greenblues)
Trigramme - KOR (bigramme - KO)
Home Venue - Sraltlur State Baseball Arena (Max. Att.: 35,500)

The awful 0-2 start and the 1-4 after five match days during WBC 27 was the reason to quickly dismantle the original team that had played from WBCs 22 to 27. This Classic marks the seventh WBC for the Greenblues, and this time their goal is to do better than last time (2nd round, 0-2 vs. Strawbee). The team is a mixture of the old players and the new players (who were suddenly introduced during WBC 27), and a backup roster is being made if that is necessary.

Nova Anglicana WBC 28 Preview

Allen Talos, Londinium Courier

The 30th-ranked Lions return a very similar roster to WBC 27 two years ago, but with a few significant changes. Most notably, long reliever and spot starter Clark Boone and former starter Noah Hawkins have swapped places, with Boone proving his worth in the WBC and IBS III. The team also welcomes youngsters Jamey Conroy and Darius Boudreaux to the squad, as well as older players Brooks Merriman and Russ Parsons. After a 4-4 performance eked them through to the knockout rounds last time, the Lions defeated fellow newcomers New Wolfopolis two games to one and North Franklin two games to none to advance to the quarterfinals, where they were bounced by their nemeses and eventual runners-up Maklohi Vai.

While this year does not feature Maklohi Vai in the group stage, the Lions will see semifinalists Sangti, old foe Karditan, and a talented Imota team that returns for its second year. Also in the group are unranked newcomers Mochria and Chiata. The Lions, after finishing in the quarterfinals of WBC 27, placed 2nd to North American neighbor Gregoryisgodistan in IBS III, a tournament that saw the Lions squeak into the playoffs, only to win two straight playoff series (against powerhouse Super-Llamaland and friendly rival New Wolfopolis), mirroring their WBC run. If there's anything we know about this team, they start slow and finish strong; when they get on a roll, they're as tough to handle as any team.

In the group, Sangti obviously has to be the favorite to advance as the #1 seed, but who will claim the second spot out of the group is a little bit more hazy. Karditan is ranked as the second-best squad in the group, but they failed to qualify last time and could be at the mercy of younger, hungrier teams. The Lions want to prove that last year was not a fluke and continue their rise on the international scene, but complacency could be an issue and a slow start could doom them. The 45th-ranked Imota Sunwings finished with the same 4-4 record as the Lions (and the same as everyone else in their group), but some ugly losses early doomed them to a poor run differential and they couldn't advance on the tiebreaker. This hungry, scrappy squad is the dark horse of the group. Mochria and Chiata are unranked, so it's unlikely that they'll advance, but if last year's WBC taught us anything, it's that chaos can and will occur in the group stage. The Lions have a strong chance of qualifying, but don't be surprised if it's Sangti and Imota out of this group.

EDIT: This is the new schedule, due to a media information mixup by host Vaugania.

MD1: Imota vs. Nova Anglicana
MD2: Nova Anglicana vs. Mochria
MD3: Sangti vs. Nova Anglicana
MD4: Nova Anglicana vs. Karditan
MD5: Chiata vs. Nova Anglicana
MD6-10: Same as MD1-5 w/ home and away switched.

The Lions will host two straight to start the WBC; the Wild Kards in game one, and then the Mochria Reindeer in game two. This should be a 1-1 start at worst, followed by a trip to Imota and then hosting Chiata, who, unlike the rest of the group, is using a 3-man rotation (EDIT: There are only three pitchers in total on Chiata's roster), and has apparently penciled two DH's into their starting lineup. One has to wonder if Chiata's manager Bill Visko is up to the challenge of a major international tournament like this. Facing Sangti in game 5 should put the Lions at 2-3 at worst. Therefore, they should finish 4-6 in the worst-case scenario. The Lions have the ability to beat all of these teams, but will they? They cannot afford to start poorly, as a MD 10 game against Sangti could be a difficult must-win game. Sweeping Mochria and Chiata is imperative, as is at least a split with Imota. This group looks to be fairly evenly matched (as far their respective pots), unlike some of the other groups, which are already becoming known as "Groups of Death", so 6-4 could be enough for a second-place finish. We look forward to seeing the Lions in action in this second go-round, WBC 28.

Starting Rotation (order as given)
LHP #38 Elmer Sutton, 37 - veteran headlines rotation, fastball/changeup/screwball mostly, probably last go-round, but still has good stuff
RHP #17 Felix Murphy, 26 - has settled in at big-league level, nearly unhittable slurve
RHP #56 Kip Fischer, 32 - Fischer a power sinkerballer who pounds the zone, average secondary pitches
RHP #27 Justin Garcia, 27 - electric fastball comes in 4 and 2-seam varieties, along with developing slider, but struggles with command
LHP #26 Clark Boone, 35 - former sixth starter/long man promoted to #5 job, throws consistent strikes and keeps his composure

Bullpen
LHP #44 Noah Hawkins, 30 - fastball tops out at 88, but makes up for it with tough cutter, slider, change, and curve, demoted to long relief, could see spot starts
RHP #25 Jamey Conroy, 24 - being groomed as future national-team closer, rookie showed his mettle by recording 31 SV a year ago, hard, nasty 2-seamer from a low 3/4 slot
LHP #14 Kyle Pauley, 26 - setup man, can get lefties and righties with fastball/curve/changeup
RHP #32 André Leclerc, 28 - Quebecois throws a tough frisbee slider from a sidearm slot, death to righties
RHP #37 Bill McCaffrey, 36 - big 12-6 curve is his main weapon, impeccable control
RHP #43 Royal Barbour, 30 - touches 95 with the fastball, great stuff but can lose it if he doesn't get the calls
LHP #50 Ellis Rhodes, 31 - LOOGY (Left-handed One Out Guy) has tricky 2-seam, circle change, bad platoon splits
RHP #41 Eduardo “Eddy” Cavazos, 37 - jovial closer features a tough splitter, slider, comp with Jose Valverde (in his prime)
RHP #23 Trent Burkhardt, 25 - wild card of the staff, has been known to hit triple digits, but the next one could be at your head (by accident)

C #2 Josh Heckman (R/R), 26 - Heckman has great instincts behind the plate and is a tough man to strike out, is now familiar with the team, can handle any staff in the league impeccably
C #18 Raleigh Hightower (L/R), 33 - Hightower, while not a great hitter, has a little pop, but his main value comes from his blocking skills and strong arm
C #29 Russ Parsons, (R/R), 35 - Parsons is a veteran who has won six Gold Gloves in the NABL, bat speed has slowed, but a dangerous hitter nonetheless

1B #22 Kareem Al-Aniz (L/R), 29 - this Sunni Muslim takes Fridays off to attend prayers, big black man with a big black beard and big black bat, mashes HRs, including a league-record 501-ft bomb, club relies on him for power
CI #34 Philip “Phil” Carter (R/R), 30 - this converted 1B now plays 3B, features defensive versatility with a strong arm and good glove, gap-to-gap power rather than long-ball power
3B #3 Brice Napier (R/R), 31 - Napier has a serious strikeout problem, but if he gets a hold of one, look out
2B #5 Chris Fletcher (S/R), 27 - Fletcher is a 15/15 guy with great range at 2B, not very patient though
SS #6 Jarrod Novak (R/R), 26 - after playing pretty well in last campaign, looks to build on his success, 20/20 guy with good arm and great range,
MI #10 Darius Boudreaux (S/R), 25 - Boudreaux is a wizard at either MI slot, makes the tough plays look easy, bat still in development

OF #16 Martín Torres (S/R), 31 - Torres is a speed merchant and a defensive whiz, .300 hitter but no power, aggressive on basepaths
OF #45 Brooks Merriman (R/R), 28 - Merriman had a breakout (28/16) season last year after toiling in the minors for a long time, extremely hard worker
OF #13 Teddy Cunningham (R/L), 24 - Cunningham can play any OF position and play it well, below-average arm, hit tool still in development, good speed
OF #19 Roman Jennings (R/R), 32 - former MVP, 30/15 guy with .320 average, if he has a weakness, it's the high fastball, but he just might get on top of it, team needs him to hit in order to succeed
OF #24 Austin Reeves (R/R), 34 - Reeves has an absolute cannon in RF, mitigates poor speed with good routes, average power, but has a good K/BB ration

Graig Lowman #60 (Manager)

Dante Woodward #1 (Hitting Coach)

Charley Battaglia #47 (Pitching Coach)

Team Cassadaigua- World Baseball Classic 28

After the debacle that saw the team deliberately attempt to (and succeed in) losing games so that they could win money via gambling against themselves, the Queen has announced full-scale changes with the national baseball team. We’ll get to the changes made within CAB (Cassadagan Association for Baseball) over the course of our press releases.

There is not a single player or coach returning from that disgraced WBC 27 team. Furthermore, the Queen has also decided that there would be no family, friends, or domestic teammates of anyone that played for that team. What does this mean, then? Collegiate all-stars. Not one player has even a game of professional experience or any kind of professional contract.

Will this mean the Dagans figure to lose a lot? Probably, but this isn’t about that this year. The team needs to completely re-brand itself, and it starts now.

Manager- Ericka Ruiz, 48 (Coaches Concord Heights Beauty School. Professional playing career only made it to the highest level of the minor leagues as a reserve middle infielder)

PITCHING:
Starters:
#29- Kelsey Young, 21 (RHP) (Senior, Concord Heights Beauty School)
#33- Lauren Curry, 20 (LHP) (Junior, New Lakeland Business School)

#30- Allison Spencer, 21 (RHP) (Senior, University of Concord Heights)
#25- Cassidy Brennan, 20 (RHP) (Junior, Winchester College)

Note: Cassadaigua usually always tries to get 6-7 innings, minimum, out of their starting pitcher.

Bullpen:
Utility (Anytime)- #46- Kristen Kendrick, 21 (RHP) (Senior, Brattleboro Culinary Institute)
Long Relief (preference when 3-5 innings might be needed)- #40- Kaitlyn Conte, 19 (RHP) (Soph, University of Concord Heights)

Hailing a New CAB,
by Rachel Sharper, Concord Heights Times

For a while, it seemed as though World Baseball Classic 27 was an unlucky one for Cassadaigua. The losses piled up, one on top of the other, with no wins in sight. It’s something that might happen to an unranked first time nation that never tells the world who plays for them, but not for a nation that is a 3-time champion of the competition and had just hosted the WBC in the edition prior! Who did Cassadaigua piss off? Sports expert Margaret Randomovski told us then that, “even I don’t scheme that bad when it comes to secret life as a voodoo afficinado.” Was there some random voodoo hex over the nation? Did the wrong person get hit in the head with an apple during World Baseball Classic 26? It turns out that none of that is why Cassadaigua was losing games. Sorry, Margaret. You can take credit for it if you want too, still.

The team was playing against themselves, deliberately losing games so that they can win money via gambling. It’s something the makes no sense, after all, as these are mutli-millionaire baseball players who shouldn’t need to betray their country for the sake of winning more money. Even manager Meghan Corrigan, herself a three-time World Baseball Classic champion as a player was aware of not only what was going, but was a participant in the scheme. Erika Grossman, former starting catcher that is now serving eight years in prison was the ringleader. While she was on trial, she confessed to why it was done, “We just thought we could get away with it.” Yes, something so simple. You have millions of dollars in your bank account already, but if you think you can get away with padding that a little more, then why not? It was easy for Grossman to take charge of this effort, as behind the plate all she had to do is call for the pitchers to throw things that matched up to the batters strengths, and not their weaknesses, enough times to secure the desired result. Corrigan and others were aware of Grossman’s involvement, as it was soon discovered later. Several Cassadagan baseball managers across the league knew this was going on and saw it as a contract negotiation tool. In other words, when one of the players on the national team became a free agent on the club level, their coaches knowledge the extra money attained in the gambling scheme would be considered, and they could offer less money in the contract. The player still got the money, but it didn’t have to come out of the team owner’s wallet, but instead of the common folk who were betting on the Dagans and coming up short. Most people believe that the only reason Cassadaigua won their final game is because they had become such an underdog by the bookies in the game, that it was the first time where trying to win the game was actually the better option.

This has changed the face of Cassadagan baseball. The great Meghan Corrigan is now herself serving a six-year prison sentence. A total of five baseball players from the previous Classic team are also currently behind bars for their involvement, as are several different oddsmakers and bookies. Ryan Neidhart was the person behind the scenes, making sure the money flow would always be favorable to the ladies that were involved. Neidhart was sentenced to twenty-five years in jail, and his actions certainly were a black-eye on the men’s rights activists. Neidhart also had served as the President of the Brattleboro Chapter of Male Equality Now (MEN). While many believe that more baseball players had a knowledge of the scheme, investigators have not been able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that there were more involved. Reliever Chelsea Gomez, for example, had been very vocal in her defense and trying to make a clear statement that she and others had nothing to do with it. That has helped Gomez keep a place on her club team, although she heavily booed every time she comes out of the bullpen in an opposing stadium (as is every player from that team still currently playing).

Queen Cassie often oversees the professional sporting organizations, but has always given them free-will to rule the sport as they see fit. This led to the rather unprecedented move for her to completely overhaul CAB (Cassadagan Association of Baseball) from top to bottom. The organization is now led by Kaitlyn Rinaldi. Yes, that Kaitlyn, the former World Bowl defensive coordinator who later served in the office of CAFE (Cassadagan Association for Football Excellence) over the last five years. While Rinaldi’s expertise is on the gridiron, her leadership and business acumen made her a more then qualified choice. Kaitlyn was then able to pick and choose her staff, and you will see that there are many people who have experience with other sports at the interregional level, including soccer, football, and hockey. Jessica Schanke, a 2-time World Cup (soccer) champion who’s #17 is retired in Concord Heights, is now assisting Rinaldi, a former World Bowl Champion. “We certainly have no shortage of trophies in this office,” Schanke joked, although none of them come from baseball. They will learn baseball together, and the first step was putting together a team that had no association with anyone that played on the World Baseball Classic 27 team. The best solution for this was to take the nation’s best college players and let them try to restore dignity back to the nation on the diamond.

Ironically and fittingly, Cassadaigua’s first game of World Baseball Classic 28 will be against Maklohi Vai, one of the co-hosts of the last Classic. There would probably be no better way for the team to show things have changed then to pull off a win in this game, at home. However, doing so mean an upset.

And isn’t it time the team had favorable upsets?

Group 2 preview

I think we may call Group 2 something close to a group of death. World's number one team, Milchama is in here (again...). The Fair Republic is here as well, Lymantatia is the fourth seed, and then two unranked teams, Piggleston and Northern Sunrise Islands. Especially the inclusion of the last one could trigger some twitches from the last Di Bradini Cup semifinal, for those who watch football as well as baseball.

The quality of Milchama is known. They finished in third place of the last WBC, where Maklohi Vai and Strawbee played a surprising final, but nevertheless we expect the Milchamians to field their best team, and we hope to at least beat them once. The Fair Republic is an unknown team to us, but their 28th ranking tells us that they have some quality at least. Their style is a little bit like our team's style, with pitching and defense centrally in their team, and their aggressive base running is like our aggressive base stealing. Lymantatia is the last ranked team, another team we have not played. Piggleston and Northern Sunrise Islands are new to baseball altogether, so for these last three teams we are just going to see how they play.

Prediction: the 16 qualifiers

Maklohi Vai and Vaugania. We would like to see Estope in the Round of 16, but Vaugania's home advantage is going to save them.

Milchama and Ko-oren. No surprises in a tough group, where we expect some of the new teams to upset the bigger teams.

New Montreal States and Thatius. Allinlia might try to imitate Strawbee, but we think Thatius is going to take second place. Gregoryisgodistan is our underdog.

Zwangzug and Saugeais. Just because we want to play Saugeais somewhere in the Round of 16, 8, 4 or whatever. We just want to kick them out of the WBC ourselves. Sorry Qazox

Sicoutimont and Saintland. The Sova Empire might not be able to overcome the rising team of Saintland. Also, the Sova Empire face the Sovan Antithesis in the group stage!

Strawbee and Super-Llamaland. The surprise winners of last WBC will take the group, and Super-Llamaland will join them. The Serbian Empire, the Cowardly Pacifists and Alitaba could upset each other a bit, but we do not expect them to qualify.

Darmen and Equestrian States. Though we would like to get Lycrabon in the second round, the Equestrian States are going to win this group with Darmen in second place. Wow, three teams we would like to beat in one group!

Sangti and Imota. Imota is going to be the surprise of the tournament, on only their second ever WBC. Though they are ranked 45th, we think they have what it takes to beat Karditan and Nova Anglicana!

The Ko-orenite team

The Ko-orenite team for WBC 28 is a mixture of the old players that contributed to the WBC 26 fourh place, and the new players that saved the team from going out in the group stage of WBC 27 (where the old players went 1-4 after five games. The young players somehow made Ko-oren first in the group with 4-4).

This new generation is the first that grew up in the 'new' Ko-oren, with 17 official languages, of which one (Ko-oran) exists in a gazillion different dialects, that are all considered as one though the difference between two variations of Ko-oran could be as different from each other as Inuit and Finnish. Spoken in places not far from each other, but otherwise entirely different. The language used within the team is standardized Ko-oran, the same language as the government uses. To be honest, standardized Ko-oran is most close to the Ko-oran spoken a few millennia ago.

The stars of the team are no doubt Hidetada, Fujiwara, Shotoku, Jinmu and Ieyasu for the old generation, and Yamaguchi, Lee, Morissot, Sayar and Abernethy for the new generation. This results in an extremely versatile national team, that has everything: quality players, that are all starters for their club teams in one of the best leagues of the world, and young and old players for almost all positions. Simply said, this #10 Ko-oren team is here to get to the final 8, at least.

As for the pitchers, Sayar is the starting pitcher. Behind him, things get a little complicated. As in the national league, the national team pitching rotation is a bit odd. 'Everything to throw the opposition off' is the motto, and the team only has a clear closer (Yoshimitsu). Abernethy and Ieyasu can be brought on for middle relief (or more), Yoritsune and Gwgan could be swapped for Sayar even in the second inning if necessary.

The coaching is done by 6 players that left the national team after WBC 27: Yoritomo, the star pitcher, Munetaka, the solid closer, and Yoshinori, the backup closer, take the pitching and bullpen coaching. Gotoba, Hidenobu and former star Minamoto are in charge of hitting, first, and third base.

Prediction: our 10 games

The Fair Republic - Ko-oren: a high scoring game between to eager teams: 4-6
Ko-oren - Lymantatia: a game we just need to win: 5-1
NSI - Ko-oren: against a probably difficult, but new opponent: 2-4
Ko-oren - Milchama: we all know who we are playing against: 4-7
Piggleston - Ko-oren: closing off the first half, and recovering from the Milchama game: 2-7

Ko-oren - The Fair Republic: TFR probably showed their cards by now: 5-4
Lymantatia - Ko-oren: either Lymantatia is the surprise of the group, or they bomb: 3-1
Ko-oren - NSI: like last game: 4-3
Milchama - Ko-oren: away games bring out the best in us, but this is still going to be difficult: 8-6
Ko-oren - Piggleston: last game, and maybe the only blowout: 10-2

At the end of the group: 7-3

Peter Dirk and Emmanuel Cruz-Johnson loved the repetition of fielding ground balls during practice. This similarity, along with their similar backgrounds and lack of job security (Brendan Smith was a better hitter), caused them to spend lots of time together.

Dirk stood at his position at second base. Cruz-Johnson stood at his position of shortstop. Both loved playing in unorthodox areas. Dirk stood far to the right of a normal position. Cruz-Johnson stood way in on the infield. This caused a solid wall of great defense on one side of the infield and a gaping hole on the other. But it worked, somehow, despite the fact that the first baseman couldn't really run.

They fielded ground balls hit by a coach for thirty minutes in dull solitude. Peter Dirk made an error about six minutes in and another after fifty-two minutes. Cruz-Johnson's only error came around forty-five minutes. They were easy ground balls, at least to the Hicanan middle infielders.

Next came the cage. Each position player was assigned a Hicanan pitcher for live batting practice, but the batting cage with its dull metal machinery came first for everybody.

Whizzz...thunk. Whizzz...thunk. Whizzz...thunk. went the batting cages, punctuated by the loud ring of the metal fence when a ball struck it.

Then, the assignment list for live practice was handed out. Cruz-Johnson got middle reliever Julio Delgado and his blazing fastball. Peter Dirk groaned when he saw his name assigned to long reliever Todd Smith. Smith had no control but a lot of stuff. His pitches broke around and spun and dropped as if they were tied to Smith with a string.

Emmanuel stepped up, hit Delgado pretty well, and went to the Team Statistician and Video Coordinator for a video and stats review of his session.

Peter Dirk grimly attempted to swing at Todd Smith's pitches. Pitch after pitch was either six feet out of the zone or six feet out of the zone in some other direction. Some broke so much Dirk swung at them before they danced and spun away from his wooden bat. He walked away in frustration with only two hits, although there wasn't much to swing at.

But despite Dirk's bad practice session, it was Cruz-Johnson's day that proved to be worse. After learning that he had hit .160 in his practice session, the news he got were worse:

Brendan Smith was to start at shortstop in the first game of the season.

World Baseball Classic 28 Preview

Here we are with yet another World Baseball Classic. This year with a smaller qualifying field there are more challenging groups which will set up some great games. Estope hopes to rebound after yet another disappointment. Manager Nicolas Carr really needs to turn this team around this year or he may find himself out of a job. After he did a tremendous job in his first half a season as head coach, replacing a fired Felipe Sweigart mid-WBC 25, he did an almost repeat performance in WBC 26, starting out 0-4 before turning it around, and then completely collapsed in WBC 27. Estope has not make it out of the group stages since their first appearance in WBC 24. Could this be the year they redeem themselves? It very well could be. Once again every starter has returned, making this a very experienced team. This core has stuck together for what will be their 5th World Baseball Classic. One problem with them is their inconsistency. One never knows what to expect from this team. They could just as easily qualify as they could finish bottom of the group. But now, without further ado, a breakdown of this year's World Baseball Classic.

Looking at the different groups it is hard to pick out just one "Group of Death." Group One can make that case as the last three hosts are all in this group. There is a weakness though since it is very top heavy. It should be a tough group to get through for lower ranked teams. Group Two also looks to be very tough with four top 40 teams and quality throughout. Group Three seems equally as hard with four teams with a realistic shot of qualifying. But none of these even compare to Group Four with #2 Zwangzug, #15 Saugeais, #23 Qazox, and #36 New Wolfopolis. They boast the second lowest average rank this tournament and are tough from top to bottom. This group will be exciting to watch for sure as I'm sure there will be many twists and turns before the two qualifiers come out. Group Five is easier but still no walk in the park with four teams that really have a lot of talent. Statistically, from an average rankings standpoint, Group Six is the hardest of them all. With an average rank of 40.8, there is no guarantees of who will emerge. There really isn't one stand out team, except for maybe last year's champion Strawbee, but rather a lot of middle of the pack but still very good teams. Groups Seven and Eight are not easy by any stretch but when looking at the others they seem relatively calm. What a Classic this will be.

Average Ranking (Unranked teams considered a rank of 100)
Group 1 - 47.7
Group 2 - 46.3
Group 3 - 48.2
Group 4 - 46
Group 5 - 48.8
Group 6 - 40.8
Group 7 - 49.7
Group 8 - 49.8

And now for our usually very off predictions.

Group 1:
We start off with Estope's own Group One. With #3 Maklohi Vai and hosts #9 Vaugania, not to mention always an always formidable Cassadaigua squad, Estope seems to have little shot of qualifying. Expect Maklohi Vai and hosts Vaugania to both qualify relatively easy with Estope and Cassadaigua vying for a third place moral victory.

Group 2:
A tough group to pick but Milchama and Ko-oren, the group favorites, should emerge. Unranked Northern Sunrise Islands could make some noise though and The Fair Republic might come very close to making it.

Group 3:
New Montreal States and a surprise pick Gregoryisgodistan are our selections to advance from Group 3. This one should be very close from top to bottom with only a few points separating everyone.

Group 4:
Hmm. A very tough group to pick. Of all the groups this is the one we are most excited about. Three traditional powers and an up and coming newcomer look to provide much drama. Zwangzug is very good and have been for ages. Their should have enough talent and big game experience to secure a spot. As for the runner-up spot, both Saugeais and Qazox have experience and are very talented. In a tossup pick, we choose Qazox to go on.

Group 5:
Saintland will win this one fairly easily. They have quickly risen to one of the top baseball nations and will show they are here for the long run with a statement group victory. Sicoutimont is a very consistent team and that will show as they qualify yet again.

Group 6:
Strawbee, no contest, will win this group. The real question is who will secure the second qualifying spot. I think that Super-Llamaland has the slight edge over The Serbian Empire but it will certainly be tight.

Group 7:
Darmen and Equestrian States are our picks although Lycrabon and San Jose Guayabal could pull off an upset of two and slip in. Lycrabon would be more likely to do so due to their experience but I just don't think they have the talent to qualify this time around.

Group 8:
Sangti is the clear favorite to make it out and most likely will. Nova Anglicana however is not expected to make it out but we believe that they will pull it off this time and qualify.

Well there they are. We can come back at the end and see how wrong we are with our prediction. This is sure to be a great Classic.

Republic of Welsh Cowboy
World Baseball Classic 28 Roster

That was a disappointment, wasn't it?

A 1-7 record and an overall horrendous showing from the Welsh Cowboy national baseball team in the nation's international sporting debut was covered up by the football squad's successes, but the poor performance that the previously unnamed team put in cannot be minimized; it finished dead last in its group, despite lofty expectations.

It was obvious to the executives of the Welsh Cowboy Baseball Association (WCBA), which oversees the team, that drastic changes were needed. Therefore, just a month after the team's exit from WBC 27, the WCBA announced that manager Karl Schelner would not be returning to the team; instead the team declared that the previous pitching coach, Bradley Vernard, would assume the managerial role, although the remainder of the coaching staff left the team.

The turnover was even more pronounced among the players. Exactly two members of the WBC 27 roster return: 2B Luke Burchett and right-handed starter Martin Brodvik. They will be joined by a cast of new, and largely young, players who will be expected to provide a fresh energy to the team. They will be relied upon to give the fans something to cheer about?

But about those fans... although the WCBA claims that support for the team has never been higher, the success of the football squad and the poor showing by the baseball squad has resulted in what some analysts call "a crippling decline in support." Just 100-200 fans showed up to each of the team's open practices, and the WCBA must in reality be worried that fan support will be disastrously low.

Even the adoption of a nickname, "Beefeaters", has done very little to produce online or social buzz. And so the squad faces an uncertain future.

Butnotcomplaining: "Here."
Nightly: "With all due respect, Olly, wouldn't it be easier to do roll call by first name?"
Oxenfree: "No, that doesn't work, because there are two Thors: Butnotcomplaining and Justthinkingaboutit. We wouldn't be able to distinguish the two if we did it by first name."
Nightly: "Oh, yeah, you're right. Fine then, carry on."
. . .
*Captain Oxenfree finishes roll call*
Oxenfree: "Now I'd like to turn it over to head coach Colin Marine for a few words."
Marine: "Thanks, Olly. Alright, look, guys. This is our first classic, our first time playing together, honestly, and you have to know, it'll be rough. Especially with the group we're in."
Oxenfree: "Uh-oh. Are we in the toughest group?"
Marine: "Not the toughest. New Wolfopolis has it pretty rough in group four, and group one and two look pretty difficult as well."
Interruptus: "Hey! Just like The Hunger Games! How one, two, and four are the toughest!"
Marine: "Curtis, shut up! No one cares about The Hunger Games. This is a national baseball team, not a book club. Now, as I was saying, we could've done worse in group draw, but it could be better, too. Now, the toughest challenge will be Sangti."
*crowd lets out collective sighs, moans, and groans*
Marine: "I know. The fifth-ranked team is in our group. They'll be tough to beat. We also have to deal with Karditan and Imota, two ranked teams, as well as Chiata, a newbie like us."
Oxenfree: "So that makes five. Who's the last team in the group?"
Marine: "The Nova Anglicana Lions. The team famous for beating our friends up in New Wolfopolis in the playoffs of both WBC 27 and IBS III."
Oxenfree: "How will we beat any of these teams?"
Marine: "Well, we're pretty evenly matched with Chiata, so those will be good games, which we might win a few. To beat any of the ranked teams, though, we'll have to just put our minds to it, play hard, and leave everything on the field. Got it?"
Team: "YEAH!"
Oxenfree: "How do you expect us to do?"
Marine: "I expect you guys to win 2 games, minimum. That would be meeting my expectations. Exceeding it is anything above that. And to really wow me, finish 5-5 or better."
Oxenfree: "What about the rest of the group? How do you expect that to pan out?"
Marine: "Well, I'm fairly certain Sangti will advance, and I think that Nova Anglicana and Karditan will have a tough battle for second. I expect us to finish in one of the bottom two slots. It's nothing against you, it's just that we're new to this, and everyone else besides Chiata has experience."
Oxenfree: "I understand."
Marine: "So, tomorrow, we've got Chiata, in front of the home crowd in Mochria City. It will be imperative for us to start the series on a good note. You with me?"
Team: "Yeah!"
Marine: "Alright! Reindeer on me, reindeer on three, one, two, three!"
Team: "REINDEER!"

Seven Years Ago

The phone rang. Brooks almost pounced on it right then, but told himself, Play it cool. He waited until it rang twice and then picked it up.

"Brooks Merriman?" The voice on the other end of the line was strong, but sounded weary. "This is Assistant GM Bryan Clark of the Washington Nationals. We're pleased to tell you that we've selected you with our 43rd round pick in this draft. We're sending you a plane ticket. Report to Viera, Florida. There you'll work out with the rest of the draft picks, sign your contract, and we'll assign you to a team. See you in a week. Thank you."

Brooks put down the phone. His dream had come true! After working so hard to get his baseball scholarship to the University of New Brunswick, he had worked for an additional four years there. He set a Nova Anglican University Baseball record with 25 home runs in a single season, while leading the moribunds Reds team to three consecutive playoff appearances. His hard work was finally paying off! He had a shot at the major leagues.

One Week Later

Swish! Crack! Swish! Crack! The sound of wooden bat on ball resounded throughout the tiny stadium as the assorted draftees took batting practice. Players not batting were fielding, or throwing side sessions, as general chatter filled the air. However, all talk stopped when the Nationals' #1 pick, Andy Freeman of Oklahoma, stepped to the plate. He sprayed the ball all across the diamond, before finishing by parking three straight to left, just to show that he could. He swaggered off to the dugout, where Nationals personnel were waiting for him.

Brooks sighed. Freeman had received a $3.5 million signing bonus, while his signing bonus had been the plane ticket. His contract had been for $950 a month. Even though the dollar was slightly stronger than the Anglican pound, it was still next to nothing. Nevertheless, he was playing baseball for a living. He strode to the plate. Time to show them what a Nova Anglican could do.

A week later, after all of the evaluations had been done, the players received their team assignments. The 1st-5th round picks got called to the front office to learn their assignments, while the rest of them crowded around the bulletin board to see where they were headed. Freeman had been sent straight to High-A Potomac, but for the rest of them, it was Short-A Auburn or staying right where they were to play in the GCL. Brooks had been assigned to Auburn, but he knew it was more to do with his age than his playing ability. They wouldn't waste time with a 21-year old in rookie ball. But Auburn was closer to home than Viera, and he was excited to begin the first step of his major league journey.

The Wild Kards

Yes, there are intelligent ponies on this team. If you are interested in finding out more information on how they physically play baseball, TG me and I'll explain. They will never 'cheat', however; and make a note of that. 'Cheat'ing being a pegasus straight up flying to a fly ball, or a unicorn using magic to alter the ball's path after it's been hit or thrown.

As a general rule of thumb, this team is prone to errors and usually relies on a high strikeout rate. Our starters usually don't mind pitch counts in the 110s or 120s, but that can go by quickly (what with all the strikeouts), so we aren't afraid to use our powerhouse of a bullpen. Most of the pitchers are fine with the bat, as well. At least they're not throwaway outs, and often times help their own cause if they come up with runners on base.

Manager: Ricky Ledée, 48 years old, #33

Lineup: (Batting order, position, name, age, uni #, bat/throw, info)
1. 3B Short Stop, 27, #68, L/L; An earth pony that darts around the field like he owns it. Snappy on the basepaths, and a good bunter.
2. CF Aaron Aaron, 29, #44, R/R; Above average speed, above average glove, above average power. Gives solid stats all around, though the only really remarkable thing about him is the number of doubles he hits--he's led the KBL for five straight years, right from his rookie season.
3. RF Batl Skard, 32, #5, L/L; A great contact hitter who WILL make you pay if you hang something. Often uses his height to rob would-be homeruns over National Stadium's ridiculously short right-field wall.
4. LF Gale Wind, 23, #22, R/R; A Pegasus (she doesn't fly, but can still jump higher than most people) with a cannon for a wing. Hits bombs consistently, but is decidedly average in clutch situations. She's also quite quick, which helps her cover National Stadium's expansive left field.
5. 1B Jeffery Snider, 34, #45, R/R; Would come up with any throw at first base on a team that didn't have Hormuz and Caster in the infield. Even so, he drastically helps reduce the effects of their horrid throws. Most clutch hitter on the team.
6. 2B Ricky Hormuz, 35, #9, R/R; Lines balls everywhere and has base stealing down to a science. Horrid with the leather. He's starting to slow with age, but his experience keeps growing, along with his ability to fool and unnerve pitchers.
7. SS Starline Caster, 21, #13, R/R; A speedy and flamboyant young unicorn, Starline is equally likely to make that massively improbable game-saving play as he is to send an easy throw into the stands. He's managed to reign in his throws recently, but is still prone to the occasional horrendous error.
8. Pitcher
9. C Geoff Jones, 29, #3, R/R; Leaves runners from both teams out to dry frequently.

Bench:
C Wellman Roberts, 31, #14, R/R; Big power with a strong arm, but his blocking isn't quite up to par.
2B Roger Lozano, 19, #86, L/L; Tremendous power, no discipline. Whatsoever. Decent with the glove.
SS/3B Laura O'Neil, 31, #6, R/R; A strictly defensive replacement, which is quite important when Caster is normally manning (ponying?) short. A non-threatening slap hitter.
DH/1B Doyle Christain, 22, #17, S/R; Excellent contact, great power, amazing discipline. Slow as hell and a stooge with the glove. The perfect DH.
OF Alexi Alonso, 32, #87, L/L; Good contact, good speed, good glove.
UTIL Long-Hi Cho, 25, #1, S/R; Versatile, but unspectacular. Last resort.

In case of DH: Doyle Christain takes the DH spot, hitting sixth. Stop and Caster both move down a spot in the lineup.

Rotation:
P Casey Brant, 31, #4, R/R; Karditan's resident flamethrower. Slings a flaming fastball and slider (both hit 97 regularly; fastball can hit 101 at times) that look identical out of hand. Has a good changeup. Throws sidearm.
P Money Ball, 27, #65, L/L; A technical unicorn pitcher who specializes in deceptive breakers. Can throw anything that curves effectively and has developed a baffling upward-breaking Slurve.
P Cliff Leaper, 25, #31, L/L; The nation's foremost Pegasus pitcher. Jams righties with a hard cutter and has a dirty slider that can get batters on both sides whiffing.
P Manny D'aquisto, 22, #7, R/R; A young upstart with a bright future, he mixes a strong fastball with a broad, sweeping curve to keep hitters off-balance. He's still developing his splitter, which is just a decoy pitch at the moment. Prone to going for strikeouts and throwing too many pitches; has a tentative 90-pitch cap (which will usually last him anywhere from four to six innings).

Bullpen:
LR Scott Kasmeer, 34, #19, L/L; A metaphorical horse. Good rising heat, good change, good bite to his overhead curve.
LR Long Haul, 25, #58, R/R; A literal horse. A unicorn, to be precise. Knuckleballer. Take that as you will.
MR Hessafa Merana, 25, #96, R/R; Strikeout demon, but unreliable in pressure situations. Touches 103mph on a good day, and sometimes throws a curve in the dirt if he's bored of the fastball.
MR Firmer Delmar, 32, #27, L/L; Lefty specialist. Can work deep in an emergency. Superb sinker, good fastball, good change.
MR Miles Cagle, 26, #99, R/R; The all-around best pitcher on the team, used in high-leverage situations no matter the inning. Strong fastball, strong circle change, strong curve, strong slider, strong cutter, he throws everything and the kitchen sink(er).
MR Brad Chadford, 34, #53, R/R; Throws submarine-style. Used for a change of pace after high-velocity pitchers, having a fastball slower than Brant's change. Also packs a good sinker and a deceptive sweeping curve (looks fat coming in, suddenly it's gone).
CL Jasmine Carr, 32, #74, R/R; The second-best pitcher in the pen, she normally works low- and medium-pressure 9ths. Primarily throws a two-seamer that breaks in on righties, mixes it in with a cutter that breaks away and a slurve that harshly breaks low and away. If we're on the brink of blowing it, Cagle will come in instead (if he hasn't been used already).

Home Stadium: National Park in Neighpon. 40,000 Capacity. 415ft straight left, 430ft left-center, 435ft straight center, 370ft right-center, 290ft straight right.

Alex Cameron sat down heavily on his seat after a grueling practice session. The session itself hadn't been too challenging. The challenging part was his constantly aching left knee. It was impacting his swing, power, speed, and defense to the point where he was no longer the Star of Llamaland.

He was in a slight depression and decided to answer some fan mail to cheer himself up. Technically, players could only answer fan mail from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM, and it was 4:15, but he didn't care. He opened the first letter.

Dear Mister Cameron,

You are a great player. I love your playing skills. And your work ethic. However your knee is kind of red so you should get it fixed. Please autograph this Alex Cameron baseball card.

Thank you,
Todd
Ryan Smith Elementary School, Fourth Grade

Alex sighed. It was a negative message wrapped in the comforting disguise of a child's letter. Thirteen words that cancelled out the other positive ones. He decided to open another one from a slightly older child. He got as far as Dear Mister Cameron- when he heard the yell of:

"Cameron! What do you think you are doing!"

Cameron glanced up. It was the manager Joe McKenzie, of course. Cameron had been a favorite of the old manager, Thomas Yaft. But Yaft's underperformance had caused him to be demoted to pitching coach.

"Answering fan mail, what does it look like I'm doing?" He regretted the words as soon as he'd said them. McKenzie sank into an angry rampage and sent him back to the field for some "laps". The laps were around the entire baseball field. McKenzie had told him to do five.

His knee ached as he ran around the field. They really hurt, but McKenzie wasn't going to show mercy on a player breaking the rules because his knee hurt.

He went back to the hotel when another wave of news greeted him.

"Attention, players!" yelled McKenzie. "We've switched around your hotel room assignments!" he waved a piece of paper.

Alex Cameron inspected the paper. It read: ROOM 392: BRYANT MORENO. JAKE EARNEST. ALEX CAMERON.

He shrugged and left, but he was groaning internally. Moreno and Earnest were the number-three and number-five hitters. They were okay companions, but they would be constant reminders of his failure to live up to Super-Llamaland's expectations for the past four years.

He decided to take another Celexa before he entered the room. It would be a long WBC.

Game One, on the Road: Tigers set to take on Serbian Empire in WBC Opener
By Luisito Castillo, independent contributor

The Tigers will attempt to defeat The Serbian Empire's baseball squad ("The Wolves") in game one of WBC 28 tonight. The Serbian Empire, ranked number twenty-five in the whole wide world (compared to our rank of fourteenth) has a long history of qualifying for the playoffs and then losing in the early rounds. Super-Llamaland has played a lot like this team in the past two WBC's, but this time we hope it will change. Many well-known prediction analysts from various countries have given us a slight edge over them. This could be it, as well as Game Six in Super-Llamaland's downtown stadium.

We couldn't get all of The Serbian Empire's players from this classic, but a team of analysts has determined that their starting pitcher is probably Vladimir Halisevic. He faces off against our Evan Masorka. Stay tuned on Channel sixteen LSNN for the game at 7:30 New Llama Time!

The North Bay Parrots

Mosktopia is in a bit of a rough patch right now. The Mosktopian government is in a state of political transition as the country is dissolving its representative form of government in favor of an experiment in true democracy. Some outside observers who are familiar with the current state of Mosktopia have concluded that the nation is experiencing civil anarchy. While Mosktopia is certainly not an anarchy, the current chaotic situation has prevented the nation from formally assembling a national baseball squad for this WBC. Instead, the North Bay Parrots - reigning Mosktopian national league champions - will be competing.

Sal Ritter - Head Coach/Manager - It's an unenviable task to lead a sports team into the international spotlight. For Sal Ritter, it is at least some relief that he will be leading the same team he has worked with and built over several seasons. Known as a cool, crafty manager, Ritter is looking forward to show off the team he assembled to the world.

Milan Whiteside - Pitching Coach - Ritter's #2 man is pitching coach Milan Whiteside. Whiteside is an open and frank man, and if one of his pitchers is having a rough night he's often one of the first to speak up about it. A serious trainer, Whiteside is an impeccable mentor to younger pitchers who is well liked by his players.

Silas Battles- First Base Coach - Silas is a curmudgeonly, long-retired short-stop with a bad temper. He often gets in heated arguments with the referees if he disagrees with a call. Folks are not sure why Battles is still active in the sport, considering his advanced age and short fuse.

Lane Mcclelland - Third Base Coach - A more likeable character than Battles, Mcclelland is also much older (if that can be believed). He came out of retirement for the opportunity to travel around the world, and is a bit slow on the uptake these days - leading some critics to comment that he might not be the best choice for a third base coach. Mcclelland scouted Ritter coming out of college and offered him his first professional job, which is probably why Ritter agreed to hire him on for WBC 28.

The Parrots play their home games at Hal Worthington Park, a beautiful if modestly-sized park in the Parrot's home town of North Bay. The stadium seats 15,121 people and has standing room for about 700 more. Weather can be quite rainy, though often not to the point that it would delay the game. Rain delays are infrequent, but do occur, and sometimes include lightening and thunder. Wind can also be a problem near sunrise and sundown. Otherwise, the skies are mainly overcast, though a bright and sunny day is not unheard of.
