Welcome to the eleventh edition of the Handball World Cup, organized by the Handbol Associacion de Sangti. Many teams will vie for one goal: to win the coveted Winners' trophy at the end of the tournament. Only one can win it though, and this competition is the only way to find out who will go home with the trophy.

Teams can now post their rosters for the tournament. Please include the RP Permissions box in your post. A sample is provided here.

Format
Since we have 40 teams signed up, 8 groups of 5 will be made, and the top 3 will progress to the playoffs. The top team will have a bye to the round of 16, while the next two teams progress to the Round of 24. All playoff matches will be single knockout, and a third place match will be scorinated at the same day as the final.

RP Details
I will make my RP cutoff at 22:00 Philippine Standard Time, (UTC + 8). Nations should indicate in their RP's if the one they posted is not final, otherwise, I will consider it as final and will grade it accordingly before cutoff, so I can scorinate soon after cutoff. There will be a one day break between the group stages, which will be double round robin, home and away, and the playoffs, which will be held in Sangti.

Since nobody in Gregoryisgodistan knows how to play handball, the sports federation decided to buy slaves and use them as a team. In exchange, the slaves will be liberated after the tournament if they make it out of the group stage, but executed if they finish last in the group. A third or fourth place finish will result in continued slave labor in other tasks. Unfortunately, the sports federation didn't bother hiring a coach, so the slave players only know the very basic rules of handball, and no more. Other than goalkeepers, they don't even have specialized positions. So there's a good chance they will be executed, and a very small chance of liberation.

Also, the sports ministry decided to be cheap and buy the cheapest slaves, so some of them are old, young, or handicapped.

Additionally, there will be a tight security detail to ensure no players defect. Anyone who tries to defect will be shot and killed immediately, and we will buy a new slave to replace the old one on the roster.

We will play our home games at the District 30 Gym, in District 30 Ward 19, which is home to the only handball court in the country outside the Gregoryisgodistan Special Administrative Zone. Temporary bleachers will be brought in to make 115 seats, of which 15 will be available to fans of the visiting team and 100 to Gregoryisgodistan. Since all the players are slaves, we will not use the forced ticket allocation method if it does not sell out.

All players will be transported to the slave house in District 30 Ward 15 after every home game to stay until it is time to travel. They will not stay overnight in foreign countries to minimize defections. They will get on the airplane, head straight to the bus to take them to the arena, then get right on the bus afterwards, to the airport, to fly home.

Please use the players' full names at all times, including the "Slave" part, or you could face very harsh (IC) legal consequences should you ever decide to come to Gregoryisgodistan.

Notes

Saintland has a very rough style of play and very few fouls in our national league, so don't hesitate to card Sanctii players, especially if Saintland loses. Handball is roughly tied with rugby as the 6th most popular sport in Saintland, behind gridiron, soccer, baseball, basketball and ice hockey. Since handball is not extremely popular, the National Handball Team did not initially carry expectations anywhere near as high as the teams for the 5 major sports, but that has changed after the 10th Handball World Cup. At that Handball World Cup, the Sanctii went undefeated, being crowned the best handball team in the world. The players on this team are not superstars, so they rely heavily on team play to compensate. Paulus Volusenus is the son of Royal One anchor Abraham Volusenus. Lucas Avidius is the older brother of Antonius Avidius, a goalkeeper for the Saintland National Soccer Team. Alessandro and Marcus Valgus are brothers. With Royal Square Garden booked to capacity by the World Cup of Hockey, International Basketball Championship and numerous Cantus Virginum concerts, the world champions of handball will play their home matches in the Free Republics, should they have any home matches. This decision was also influenced by the plethora of upcoming international sports events that will be held or may be held in Saintland in the next few months.

OOC: With signups now reaching 40, it seems the puppets will get in, so here is the Gregoryisgodistan Special Administrative Zone roster.

Gregoryisgodistan Special Administrative Zone, known as Gregoryisgodistan SAZ for short or Gregoryisgodistan Special Admin Zone for official purposes due to character limits, is a dependent territory of Gregoryisgodistan under slightly different legal system. It is used as a place for government VIPs to skirt the laws of Gregoryisgodistan, which for the most part don't apply to them, without being subject to scrutiny. Many retired officials also move here. Our handball team is not that good, since it consists of a combination of retired government VIPs and loyal friends of Lord Almighty Gregory who met at the gym one day and decided it would be fun to enter this tournament. They will play their home games at the Gregoryisgodistan SAZ Northwest Gym, and temporary bleachers will be brought in to seat 50.

Most of the VIPs don't fully understand how to play handball professionally though, so other than the goalkeeper they don't really have assigned positions, they just run all over the place.

Note that Retired Deputy Defense Minister Jack Ventura and Retired Defense Minister Louis Ventura are brothers. Also, all players should be referred to by their full names (including titles) at all times.

Team Mapletish for Handball World Cup 11

Notes

Mapletish handball is fast on the break and really aggressive. With a more possession based game with attacks and defensive plays fast, mostly aiming at the mistakes by the opposition and then hitting back fast. Despite that the national team's inconsistency has caused them a lot in their games. Previously, the Handball Lions participated in the Tenth Handball World Cup, however they failed to meet expectations as they fall out in the group stages. Handball domestically have always been picking up pace with the Big Sixteen making up the league. Despite not being among the top teams in the Handball community, the team has been gearing up in the season break with several training sessions and with the introduction of a permanent coach to the team this World Cup, the team looks to gain more international experience.

Notes

This is the same Feministvs Sanctvsterra Handball Team that competed at the Games of the VIII Olympiad, winning 2 out of 3 matches. Despite defeating Darmen on the final day, Darmen somehow still advanced. The organization Feministvs Sanctvsterra is a banned organization in Saintland that seeks gender equality and separation of church and state. They are internationally renowned for their protests in numerous nations against the Government of King Paulus XV and the Church of Saintland. The players on the team will not be using their last names to protect their identities. Feministvs Sanctvsterra was thought to be an all-female organization by most people in Saintland, including the authorities, but males actually make up around 10% of their membership (most of them sympathetic brothers of female members) and this became widely known after the 2nd World Korfball Classic. The (mostly underground) organization will, like the official Saintland National Team, be competing in the Free Republics in this Handball World Cup. Feministvs Sanctvsterra claims to be the Saintland National Handball Team and will use the Handball World Cup as a bigger stage upon which to promote their cause.

The group draw for the Handball World Cup was held today, and Gregoryisgodistan was drawn into the same group as Feministvs Sanctvsterra, an underground team of women's rights activists from Saintland. The Feministvs Sanctvsterra team will come to Gregoryisgodistan on Matchday 8. Lord Almighty Gregory issued the following statement on the matter

"It has come to my attention that Feministvs Sanctvsterra will be traveling to our country in just a few short weeks. As you might know, Feministvs Sanctvsterra is dedicated to bringing equality for women to Saintland. Unfortunately, their King Paulus is a sexist pig who believes it is ok to beat women and force them to wear head coverings. In fact, many men move to Saintland for the opportunity to beat their wives.

However, here in Gregoryisgodistan, we believe women should have equal rights as men. No law applies to women that does not apply to men, and vice versa. A woman can do everything a man can do, and vice versa. I invite Saintland to look to our country as a model of gender equality. That being said, I do not expect this to succeed. Saintland is stuck in their sexist, perverted ways, and there is no way to change that. Saintland will forever remain this way, and I shall divinely punish them. But they have already faced Earthly punishment through the deaths of 10 million in our bomb attack (OOC: Actually, one person died, and ironically they were from Feministvs Sanctvsterra. But everyone in Gregoryisgodistan believes Lord Almighty Gregory's claims.)

Therefore, I am prepared to offer every member of Feministvs Sanctvsterra who travels with the handball team, whether they are members of the team or not, an opportunity to defect to Gregoryisgodistan, immediately receive full citizenship, and start a better life free from sexism. All they have to do is renounce all ties to the Church of Saintland (which they pretty much already have) and accept the views of the Church of Gregoryisgodistan, which include recognizing me as the Lord their God.

Upon accepting citizenship, they will be entitled to full protections under the law, and should the Sanctii government attempt to return them to their home country, we will view this like any other attack on our citizens and treat it as an act of war. Given we already killed 10 million Sanctii and 5 million in the Free Republics (OOC: again, this is not true, five people in the Free Republics were killed) it is clear this will not end well for Saintland, and I would caution them against it.

Regardless of whether Feministvs Sanctvsterra chooses to accept citizenship, I am inviting them all to meet with me either before or after the game to discuss how to combat the evil Church of Saintland and the wicked Saintland regime. I think the destruction of the Church of Saintland is a cause we both share, and I look forward to starting an alliance.

Gregoryisgodistan to Temporarily Liberate Slaves Before Game in Free Republics
Due to concern of action by the Free Republics government, Gregoryisgodistan has decided to temporarily liberate the slaves on their team prior to the matchup against Feministvs Sanctvsterra in Free Republics. Just prior to entering Free Republics airspace, paperwork will be signed by Lord Almighty Gregory, who will be traveling with the team to meet with Feministvs Sanctvsterra. This paperwork will liberate the slaves on the team. However, they will still be under heavy guard traveling to and from the arena, just as for all other away games. Since they will not be slaves for the game, they will receive a salary of 100 greggygodbucks each, except for the captain and acting coach, who will receive 150 greggygodbucks each if they are different people, or 200 greggygodbucks if one person fills both roles.

Immediately upon departing Free Republican airspace, Lord Almighty Gregory will sign paperwork returning the liberated slaves to slavery. As a result, Free Republics cannot liberate the slaves, because legally speaking they are already liberated and the law only applies to current slaves. Former slaves cannot be liberated under Free Republican law, because they already were liberated.

Lord Almighty Gregory announced that he is pleased to have found this loophole that will prevent the Free Republican sinners from disrupting the Gregoryisgodistani way of life. "They attempted to kill me," Lord Almighty Gregory said, referring to the assassination attempt on his life by a Free Republics soccer player and Sister Maria Polus of Saintland (OOC: this never happened, IC-ly, it was staged). "Now they want to free our slaves. It's not happening. We are pleased to have found this loophole. We shall prevail!"

Additionally, the Ministry of Slavery said that the armed guards surrounding the slaves will open fire on anyone who attempts to remove the temporarily liberated slaves from their guard, with lethal force if necessary. They are also prepared to use lethal force on the slaves rather than let them go with the Free Republican authorities, regardless of whether the slaves are leaving by choice or not. Any slave who is killed will be replaced by a new slave for the next match, but slaves who are simply injured and returned to Gregoryisgodistan control may continue to play, perform some other form of slave labor, or be executed for uselessness as a slave, depending on the nature of the injury. Additionally, for every slave taken from Gregoryisgodistan by the Free Republican authorities, the armed guards will enter the streets of Free Republics and shoot 100 Free Republican citizens fatally as revenge. However, a Slave Ministry spokesperson said "I really hope it doesn't come to that, and I don't think it will. Free Republics doesn't want even more of their own people to perish."

One interesting consequence of this move is that for the duration of the away match against Feministvs Sanctvsterra in Free Republics, the players will be known not as Slave [ID sequence] but as Liberated Slave [id sequence] and should be referred to as such. Gregoryisgodistan requests the international media to comply with this request.

Gregoryisgodistan State Media to recognize Feministvs Sanctvsterra as official Saintland team
The Gregoryisgodistan State media has decided to recognize Feministvs Sanctvsterra's claim to be the legitimate Saintland national handball team. As a result, broadcasters will refer to the team as "Saintland" and on-screen graphics will display the name "Saintland" and the trigramme SNT and also use the Saintland flag. The other team claiming to represent Saintland will be referred to as "Sexist Pigs" with the trigramme "SXP" and will, as their flag, have a white flag with a pig on it. However, none of Sexist Pigs' games will be televised unless they wind up playing Gregoryisgodistan or Gregoryisgodistan Special Administrative Zone in the knockout stages. However, all official print reports will also refer to them as Sexist Pigs, using the pig flag.

Handball World Cup XI: Preview

(SP) The 11th Handball World Cup is set to begin in a few hours time. For the first time ever, the Kingdom of Saintland will be attempting to defend a championship. Coming into this Handball World Cup with the same roster that won in the Northern Sunrise Islands several months ago, the Sanctii will attempt to win another Handball World Cup. "When we arrived in Liventia for the Olympics, we intended to prove, without a doubt, that we are the best handball team in the world. However, the antics of the Liventian government proved to be a distraction prior to our 3rd match against Darmen. Our minds were elsewhere and Darmen eliminated us from the Olympics. Now, we return to the Handball World Cup, determined to win again. If it be God's Will, we will win another Handball World Cup and prove to the world that the Church of Saintland is the True Church of Iesus Christus." - Petrus Suedius

With the Kingdom currently in the process of preparing to host the World Cup and with Royal Square Garden booked for the World Cup of Hockey, Cantus Virginum concerts and International Basketball Championship for the foreseeable future, the World Champions of handball will instead compete in the Church of Saintland Arena in the city of Albertope, Republic of Roxawa, which is part of the Federation of Free Republics. With the National Handball Team playing abroad for the entire duration of this World Cup, it should be interesting to see how they respond against opponents who will be on their home turf.

With 40 teams entering this edition of the Handball World Cup, the organizers from Sangti decided to go with an 8 groups of 5 format. The number 1 ranked team in the world, the Sanctii were drawn into Group 6. In their opener, they will host the Sovan Antithesis, a country run by a regime that simply takes what the typical WA member nation believes to its logical extreme. This will be followed by a visit to the Equestrian States, where they, God willing, will make horse meat out of the opposition, which is the only other ranked team in the group. They are ranked 17th. Following the emotionally draining visit to the Land of the Talking Horse, the Sanctii will have a bye before returning home to face Nassau-Hessen, a relative newcomer to the world of international sports. Then, they will finish with a match in Albaie. Following this, the schedule will be repeated with the home and away teams flipped. Why must the second half schedule always be so predictable?

The top 3 teams in each group will advance to the playoffs, so the Sanctii are practically assured of advancement. This means, as Sister Polus would say, that if the National Handball Team does not advance out of the group stage, then somebody on the team is committing some very serious sins. However, there is already controversy as the organizers have permitted the terrorist organization Feministvs Sanctvsterra to enter a team, which falsely claims to be the Saintland National Handball Team. However, this is somewhat mitigated by the fact that the feminists have to visit Gregoryisgodistan, that living Infernus of a country run by a delusional lunatic who actually thinks he is God. Be sure to tune in on Royal Five to watch the Sanctii compete in the Handball World Cup live and log onto Sanctustube to see other games, with the exception of games involving Feministvs Sanctvsterra. It is time for another Handball World Cup, therefore it is time for the Sanctii to repeat as the World Champions of handball. God Wills it.

Gregory is God, but Where is His Goddess?

With all due respect to Lord Gregory Almighty, your heroines must ask where His Goddess is. As we all know, behind every great man, there is a greater woman who did everything that he takes credit for. We here at Feministvs Sanctvsterra only ask that such women get the credit they deserve from their men!

While we respect Lord Gregory for all that He has done to attain gender equality in his nation and raise awareness of the mistreatment of women and children in ours, we must still ask that he put aside His male ego and give His wife the public credit She deserves for everything She has done for Him. As we all know, the world had to have been created by a woman because only women can create life. That is why it is wrong for men, especially old men quoting some 2000-year-old patriarchal tome, to try to dictate to women what we can or cannot do with our own bodies. Our bodies, our choice. If we want to kill our unborn children, that is our right. All of those creepy old men are just obsessed with our [removed by SafeForWork] and hate women! Actually, since we give birth to kids, we should have the right to a post-birth abortion as well. That would allow us to get rid of any budding male chauvinist pigs before they could oppress any women. Isn't the health and safety of women more important than the lives of little sexists?

While we will respectfully decline the offer from Lord Gregory to accept citizenship in his nation, which is one of the freest and most equal nations in all of the world, we will accept the offer to meet with Lord Gregory. We are more than happy to discuss ways to combat the False Church, although we would also like to evaluate the condition of women in his country and suggest ways that he can improve the conditions of the good gender.
