International Baseball Slam III! (EVERYTHING THREAD)

Welcome to the third International Baseball Slam, co-hosted by Super-Llamaland and New Wolfopolis!

This edition of the IBS features twelve nations of all sorts of experience! From "top-30 in the WBC and semifinalist" to "hasn't RP'ed on NS Sports ever", we accept anybody!

Groups A and B will be hosted by Super-Llamaland. Group C will be hosted by New Wolfopolis.

Stadia: Moon Stadium (twenty minutes from New Llama) will host Group A, Tyler A. Rocke Stadium (downtown New Llama and New Llama Cyclones stadium) will host Group B, and Group C will be hosted by New Wolfopolis, along with any playoff games Super-Llamaland is in or is not available for.

Eject my players (OOC: You forgot this): Yes, one per game unless you eject a commensurate number of yours. For instance, you can eject three of my players if you eject two of yours. This includes coaches, who can be ejected but count towards the limit. An exception is that you can eject both my manager and my pitcher for throwing at a batter after a warning (as the rules say should happen) and this counts as one ejection.
Godmod other events ( (OOC: I'm assuming that's what this is supposed to say): Yes, do anything except kill Lord Almighty Gregory, our head of state and official deity. Failed and fake assassinations are fine.
Use DH at home (OOC: You forgot this too): Yes. But we're using official MLB rules, meaning if you have a starting pitcher who is a good hitter, you may bat him instead of a DH, but then you lose your right to a DH for the remainder of the game even if you go to the bullpen.

New Wolfopolis Wolfpack - National Baseball Team
Acronym: NWW

The Wolfpack of New Wolfopolis is proud to participate in and co-host this third edition of International Baseball Slam. They are coming off of a surprisingly successful WBC in which they went 5-3 during group play, good enough for second in group 3 and a trip to the playoffs. They went 1-2 against Nova Anglicana in the first round of the playoffs and were eliminated. But that was just the beginning of the Wolfpack baseball journey. Since then, the Wolfpack has participated in six friendlies, going 2-4 against a Vaugania team ranked 9th in WBC rankings. Also, playing in the WBC and friendlies has shown some emerging stars on the Wolfpack. Maurice Martinez, the big lefty first baseman, has played well, hitting .301 in the WBC with 5 home runs. Katsunori Matsuoka batted .335 in the WBC and stole 8 bases. Other big hitters emerging in the Wolfpack lineup include Andre Harding, John Parrish, and Reed Cabrera. On the pitching side, Allen Marsh had a less-than-stellar WBC, but has bounced back, going 1-0 in two friendly starts, with a 2.83 ERA. Leo Jacobson played well in the WBC, and Leonard Lindsay, Ramon Atkins, and Casey Marshall were the starters in all 5 of the Wolfpack's WBC wins. Closer Gabriel Hansen was average in the WBC, but he has looked good in bullpen sessions and friendlies since then. All-in-all, the Wolfpack have a good chance of advancing past group play, but none of these opponents should be taken too lightly. New Wolfopolis will also be the host of the games of the four teams in group C. These games will be played at Louviere Telecommunications Ballpark @ Lupinia Pavilion, right in the capital of New Wolfopolis, Lupinia. If I must say so myself, LTC Ballpark is a great place to watch a game and bringing in an international crowd will be great for our nation. This tournament may pave the way for New Wolfopolis to host other, larger tournaments in other sports as well. Starting Lineup (Danks, Mills, Moreno, and Roberts are lefty; Bradley is a switch hitter)

1. SS Darren Bradley- Age 29, #15 (Can also play: None): Best contact hitter in the Llamaland Baseball League. Good speed/defense and veteran presence. Good power for his relatively small size.

2. 2B Max Danks- Age 24, #2 (3B, SS) A scrappy player who can steal often and plays amazing defense. Good hitter, but could improve.

3. 3B Alex Cameron- Age 29, #7 (None) A former benchwarmer, Cameron underwent a Jose Bautista- like transformation. Now is a fantastic 30-30 type hitter with good contact. Defense needs work. Now with knee issues!

4. 1B Danny Mills- Age 30, #13 (None) Mills, a power hitter, loves pulling it to right field. Average contact hitter but when he hits it, he hits it FAR. Also a sterling defender at first.

5. RF Chris Harder- Age 28, #30 (LF) Chris Harder may be just a slightly-above-average hitter, but his throwing arm is one of the best his team has ever seen. Below average speed.

6. CF Brett Rochester- Age 23, #0 (OF) Rochester is the kind of player who bunts himself onto first, steals second and third, and then tags up for home on a pop fly just out of the infield to the opposing shortstop. Without bunt singles, he's hitting .279, but with them, he's .305. He can also slap it over defenders when they pull in. Without these kind of hits, he's hitting .265. Average everything else.

7. LF Jake Addams- Age 25, #1 (OF) Almost as fast as Rochester.

8. Bryant Moreno, Age 28, #3: A pretty-good-at-everything catcher with a large personality. (Throws righty, bats lefty)

9. DH (If needed) Keith Dawson- Age 22, #24(C/1B) Young and raw but with fantastic power.

BENCH

Jim Atkins, OF, #18, 33: A veteran who beats lefties to death: .381 against them compared to .235 versus righties. A good option for pinch-hitting, with a great arm in right, left or center.

Drew Stephenson, IF, #11, 28: He can play third, short, second, and left. Good contact, speed, and defense, everything else is below-average. Will get more time with Cameron's health problems.

Trevor Matthews, OF, #18, 18: A young outfielder with world class talent and a switch hitting bat. Matthews' swing is the purest in the Llamaland Minor League at any level, but his baseball IQ could use work.

The Llamas are just off their first playoff appearance in the WBC.
Thomas Yaft, the old manager, was disappointed after his ouster as coach. Yaft, a former New Llama Cyclones starter who won 219 games in his career, will become pitching coach. Pitching coach Chris Evans will become bullpen coach to adjust to the retirement of Vinny Marrero. Bullpen catcher Ray Nelson was signed by the Cyclones and decided to chase his old major-league dream after a successful minor league career. In his place is the recently retired Don George. The new manager is former New Llama Cyclones manager Joe McKenzie (who complied a 1867-1211 over nineteen years) who agreed to be international team manager.

PITCHING

Starters

R Evan Masorka- 27, #43- Low-to-mid nineties fastball, nasty high-80s sinker and splitter, looping low-70s curveball. He's so good with his other pitches and command that he doesn't even need a changeup. His career changed after the development of the final pitch.

L Ryan Lucas- 30, #44- He's made a career of his amazing curveball. A quote from catcher Chris Romatini: "It completely skips the strike zone. It starts on one edge and ends on another." He also has a nice fastball in the low nineties. But he can't seem to stay healthy for more than two starts.

L Leo Davis- #51, 26- He's been almost always injured, but has a golden arm. He throws triple-digit fastballs and mid-nineties Mariano Rivera cutters. Who needs offspeed?

R Allan Roswell- #36, 38- He has seven different pitches- fastball, 2-seamer, sinker, slider, cutter, changeup, and eephus. The latter is rarely used but generates punchouts.

R Rick Jackson, #50, 31- Once a Long Reliever who got spot starts, Jackson has a high-80s 2-seamer as his out pitch and usually throws that, a low-70s curve, and a knuckle curve in the high 60s. Nobody knows why he bothered learning two curveballs.

RELIEF
L David Mendello, #31, 30- Mendello has the worst control on the team. But with a nose-diving slurve in the high-80s and a cut fastball in the low-90s, when it goes where he wants it to, it is unhittable.

L Nick Carter, Lefty Specialist- 24, #73- Lefties can't hit his low-80s sinker. Most people can hit his mid-80s fastball (besides lefties who are thinking sinker)

L Aaron Raymond/R Alex Carson- Seventh Inning- Raymond- #53, 23: Aaron Raymond features a low-90s 2-seamer and great control. Has gone through four breaking balls looking for the right one and can throw all four to keep you off balance- curveball, slider, cutter, and splitter. Carson- 23, #53: Alex Carson has the same 2-seamer and same control. However, he has a good mid-80s slider and that's it.

L Darren Mueller/L Evan Daye/R Robby Irving- Setup: Mueller- #-3, 24: A slightly cuckoo pitcher (See: Jersey Number) who is one of two pitchers with an eephus on the team. mid-80s 2-seamer, low-60s eephus. Daye- #55, 27: A lefty killer, Daye has an amazing low-90s cutter. That's it. He has no injury troubles or stamina issues, but only one pitch means being whacked in the fourth inning.
Irving: 28/#82- Robby Irving used to be a starter with a low-90s fastball, mid-80s sinker, low-80s slider, and low-70s curveball. Then he got injured and moved to the bullpen.

Nick Bowden- Closer: High 90s-fastball, low 90s- splitter. #43

On a recent expedition in Umbra Ignis (IC, region mate of mine that was in the Quidditch World Cup. OOC, a good friend of mine that gave me permission), a group of explorers were magically turned into yellow balls (somewhat reminiscent of Pac-Man 3D) by a native tribe. Somehow, they actually are good at baseball, so the Minister of Sports gave them a shot for the 3rd IBS. That team comes in tied for first rank after Costa Luna was wiped from the face of the planet for unknown reasons. The roster:

It was a great night For Levivania. The team scored 4 runs including 2 home runs. 1 by star player and captain Levi Goldman and the other by up and coming catcher Ben Ballmer. After the game the team went to a local bar and partied the night away. Levi Goldman was a great player, but he was brash and reckless. He had a bit to much to drink that night, and so in the morning he had an awful headache and was throwing up. Pitcher Elvis Hernandez started the entire game and threw a no hitter. Elvis Hernandez, Ben Ballmer and Levi Goldman had went to school together from kindergarten to the last year of college. Hernandez was no doubt the best pitcher in Levivania. But, his record in the international baseball slam has been 3-6. After Goldman recvored from his hang over the team practiced and got ready for the night's game!

"Good afternoon, ladies and gentelemen, I'm Sportscaster NS832HD, and we've got an exciting game for you today here in Super-Llamaland. Our beloved Bat Slaves face off against Eduardastan. And we're just about ready for the first pitch. Soldier USUALSO is on the hill today, and he deals, and it is lined down the right field line for a base hit, all the way to the wall, and it's a leadoff double for Eduardastan."

The next batter up would ground out to second, but the runner would move over to third base. This would be followed by a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0, and a strikeout to end the inning. Let's fast-forward to the bottom of the third now.

"Executioner 9D8AH is at the plate with nobody out, here's the pitch, looped into centerfield, that is a base hit. The Bat Slaves have a leadoff single. And the Gregoryisgodistan fans are cheering loudly."

It was, however, obvious to anyone watching who had not been propagandized by the government that the sound was being artificially edited in. Gregoryisgodistan commoners were not allowed to travel out of the country, so actors from Gregory Llama Land, no relation to Super-Llamaland, had been hired to make the trip. But they were clueless as to how to cheer.

"Here's the 2-0 to Shirtmaker 9DHUAS, and it's looped into right, another base hit, runner holds at second and it's first and second with nobody out. Now here's Construction Worker XUAHAUAH and he lays a beautiful bunt down the third base line, runners will move up but the throw to first is in time, one away. Two runners in scoring position, however, for Chauffeur JJIASDES.

"And here's the 2-1, it is hit deep to right, going back and making the catch is the right fielder, but Executioner 9D8AH will tag from third and we are tied at 1. Here comes Soldier JSIAISKS, the MVP of the last tournament. He swings and hits a long fly ball to left, DROP THAT BALL ON COSTA LUNA BECAUSE IT IS A BOMB! HOME RUN GREGORYISGODISTAN! 3-1 BAT SLAVES! WHAT A BLAST!"

We now fast forward to the bottom of the fifth, and Shirtmaker 9DHUAS is batting. Military General Rufus McGee is on third with two outs.

"That ball is looped into center field, coming on is the outfielder but he can't make the catch, and it will drop in for a base hit. Runner on third scores, it's 4-1."

We now move along to the bottom of the 6th, with Chauffeur JJIASDES leading it off.

"The pitch is grounded to first, muffed by the first baseman and Chauffeur JJIASDES is going to be safe at first. Leadoff runner is aboard for Soldier JSIAISKS who is 1-2 with a 2-run home run. Here's the 1-2, drilled to straight away centerfield, it is off the wall and bouncing back into play, Chauffeur JJIASDES rounds third and they're waving him home, the throw is cut off as Soldier JSIAISKS goes for third, the throw to third is not in time, it's an RBI triple to put the Bat Slaves up 5-1.

"Here comes Barber LIEUIUSH. Infield is playing back, they'll concede the run for the out. It's grounded to short, throw onto first is in time, one away but a run comes home to make is 6-1."

We now move along to the top of the 8th.

"Nobody on, nobody out, Soldier USUALSO still in there, he's allowed 1 run on 4 hits today, here's the pitch and it's ripped to center, Executioner 9D8AH can't play it and it's off the wall on a bounce for a double. Looks like Sports Chief Rufus Markel is going to the bullpen here, and in comes Toiletmaker LAO9183. Call to the Bullpen sponsored by Government Mandated Communication and Tracking Devices."

Toiletmaker LAO9183 would then retire the next three batters in order, strikeout, strikeout, popout. Inning was over. We go to the bottom of the 8th, with Construction Worker XUAHAUAH batting with one out and nobody on.

"Here's the pitch, grounded in between first and second, it's a base hit into right field. It looks like Military Supergeneral Dominick Brockston is going to pinch run now. Yes, that's happening. Here comes Chauffeur JJIASDES, and it's lined to right, a base hit and it's getting into the corner and going all the way to the wall. Military Supergeneral Dominick Brockston will stop at 3rd, Chauffeur JJIASDES is into second, and it's a double. Here comes Soldier JSIAISKS, who is 2-3 with a triple, a home run, and 3 RBI's. The pitch is looped into centerfield for a base hit, one run will score, here comes the second, the throw is cut off and Soldier JSIAISKS is a dead duck at second but the run will score. Soldier JSIAISKS in a rundown now, the throw back to first gets him, but the Bat Slaves lead 8-1. Two out now."

Barber LIEUIUSH would strike out, but Toiletmaker LAO9183 would get three straight outs in the ninth to end it.

Yay! Victory over the Red Star Union! Clutchness from Moreno (again), Mendello actually pitches well, and Masorka goes six and two-thirds in under ninety pitches! They were pretty good innings, too: one run allowed, and Evan gets the victory.

Will Cameron be an issue? Today: 0-4 with 2 strikeouts and 2 popouts. How's that knee, Alex Cameron?
Danks has recovered. 2-fer-4 with an RBI triple.

Umm...back to Masorka. He threw a 3-2 pitch to a Red Star Union batter. It was a decent slider that was tapped foul behind the plate.

Then, according to the pitching coach Thomas Yaft:

"Maz [Evan Masorka] threw the 3-2 slider and winced as the batter fouled it off. He gestured to me and my heart fell into my stomach. When I got out there, Bryant [Moreno, the catcher] told me that something in Maz's arm was real tight, and it hurt. Maz threw a practice pitch and we pulled 'em out."

So, our ace is injured on the first day. What else is new?

At least we win, though. That's always a plus.
