Baptism of Fire 53 Bid - Astograth and United Gordonopia

Postby United Gordonopia » Tue Jul 30, 2013 9:49 pm

OOOH! OOOH! PICK US!
A joint production of Astograth and United Gordonopia

Image

SO WHO EXACTLY ARE THESE GUYS?

Astograth

A name recognizable to many in the football community, is more than qualified to play the role of senior host for this bid. The player behind Astograth has hosted four WCC events (CoH 48, WC 62, BoF 45, BoF 48), the eighth Copa Rusmori, Campeonatos Rushmori de la Juventud, and has maintained two active football leagues through Astograth and his puppet Itturributa.

United Gordonopia

The junior partner for the bid, United Gordonopia is no newcomer to hosting major events, having hosted Baptism of Fire 51 two cycles ago with Liventia. On top of that, UG runs a highly detailed domestic league and is very familiar with RPing through his post as an RP Mentor in the II forum and as a participant in the last six world cup cycles.

HOW WILL THEY GET THEIR RESULTS?

As seems to be fairly par for the course, xkoranate 0.3.3 will be used as a scorinator, while the SQIS formula will be used for input. Style modifiers will be used as they give participants the full WCC experience and help in fleshing out their team. Cutoff times will be slightly different because of our's RL schedules and commitments, with Astograth's games cutting off between 12 am and 2 am UTC and United Gordonopia's cutting off between 5 am and 7 am UTC.

WHAT WILL BE THE STRUCTURE?

Our ideal format will involve eight groups, with anywhere between four and six teams dependant on the number of entrants. The top two from each group will advance to a 16 team knockout round and be narrowed down to a winner. We will coordinate with the World Cup hosts to help figure out exactly where we will be cutting off BoF entries.

LET'S TALK RP BONUS!

Because teams in the Baptism of Fire enter with no rank, we will be awarding a cumulative RP bonus that will carry through the entire tournament. The bonus for RPs we will be grading them based on creativity and quality, not simply on length. For rosters, there will be a base number of points simply for posting a roster including player names, positions, and permissions, though we are willing to offer extra points on top of that should a roster include additional detail. Those points will be taken into account as part of the RP bonus pre-matchday. It is our belief that we should not disclose our specific grading formulas ahead of time.

WHAT MAKES YOUR BID UNIQUE?

Because this tournament is designed to introduce new players to the world of NS Sports, and football in particular, we want to work towards increasing the interaction between the hosts and participants. One major way we want to accomplish this is by including some daily observations in our cutoff posts, made as we grade RPs. These will not include names, so as to keep impartiality, but they will be posted in the thread so that anyone who wants to can benefit from them. Examples of these observations include things like

"I really enjoyed the introduction of characters outside of just the team...' with maybe a bit of explanation why, or

"I noticed that some RP's have been using a lot of match play by play. That's great, and shows that you're putting a lot of thought into your matches, but perhaps you could try and make it more personal by telling it from the point of view of a coach, or a pair of broadcasters who have a bit of side banter"

We feel by including a few of these observations every day, we may be able to help new players find their RPing voice as the tournament goes along, and it will serve much better than simply including a 'guide to sports RPing' in a long OP. When we call them observations, we mean exactly that: they are not meant to push people in a particular direction for RPing, but rather to give comments and constructive criticism as players are figuring out how they want to RP. We will be sure to emphasize that they are not in any way requirements.

We are also considering running a 'BoF XI', similar to what Astograth held in WC62, where players can focus on some of their players, developing their personalities and earning a bit of extra recognition at the end. All players selected for the BoF XI will be guaranteed a contract from a top-level team in either Astograth or United Gordonopia, currently among the top leagues in the world.

Finally, we will be sure to TG every entrant when the IC thread is posted so as to remind entrants about the tournament.

Thank you for considering our bid, and remember: a vote for Astograth and United Gordonopia is a vote for... a... um... math cornucopia? Not a lot of good rhymes there.

BoF51 was run really well and cleanly, and the feedback idea is good, so this probably has my vote.
The old ways were best!

This seems like an excellent bid to debut my shiny new puppet on. The feedback idea is great, as is the BoF XI, mainly because it plays right into my wheelhouse for what I'm planning for RPs. :p

Oh, one thing more:

Pretty much this.

This bid is solid and as Mak and NS said, the feedback idea is wonderful. I will most likely have vote for this bid when elections for hosting open.

Edit: Change the wording from when the host voting begins to when (more like if) I am in the EWCC. :p

BoF host votes aren't open for WCC voting. It remains an EWCC-only vote. It's the one bit of additional privilege ex-WC hosts get.

I can't find anything wrong with the bid and I know both hosts will do a good job so I've no problems with this.

So, in otherwords, you are encouraging applicants to post as little information as possible in their 'official roster' - like - Naming the 11 players that will start and possibly their positions as well, and save any supplemental information for a separate post.

Personally I like lavishly crafted rosters with loads of info because they are really useful for opponents who want to engage with a team, often giving a wider perspective than an RPer might provide in their RP series if it is themed a particular way, no matter how good the RP. I feel it's a shame that randomnamegenx11&go! rosters will be on a par with really good contributions.

This is what I thought when I read that line in the bid and hoped it was my misunderstanding.

Even so, It's still handy if these sort of things are linked in with the roster rather than having to traipse through the thread trying to find, for example, a post where Xnation mentioned which of their players was an uncontrollable lout and bound to receive a red card at some point.

After discussing the issue of rosters and bonuses with Astograth, we're thinking of something along the lines of this:

There will be a base number of points, fairly high in relation to an RP, for posting any sort of roster that lists at least the players, their positions, and RP permissions. This is because we see a roster as not only helping the player themselves, but also their fellow RPers. However, we will be willing to offer extra points on top of that which will be taken into account as part of the pre-tournament RPs. This is mainly to prevent people from gaming the system by including only a bare bones roster to get a solid number of points and then putting all of the extra info in a second post, as Vilita pointed out. Hopefully this addresses the concerns that have been raised; my own previous BoF included only a set roster bonus as part of the bid and tournament, while Astograth has done it both ways, but I can certainly see the issues you guys have with giving a set number of points for a roster no matter how detailed.

This seems like a much better system, thank you for reconsidering.

I believe we may have forgotten to mention this, but may as well say it now:

Being that interaction between hosts and participants is a major part of our bid, we have decided on a bit of expansion for our BoF XI. We will be guaranteeing a cobtract offer from a top-level club in Astograth or United Gordonopia for any player selected. Of course they can choose to decline, but it offers a bit of RP opportunity for now and the future, especially since our leagues are, I believe, 5th and 2nd in the world respectively. It also may help forge some ties that will last beyond the BoF.

I suppose their current team would probably play them more, or a higher ranked team may give an offer?

Fair enough; I think the latter option would be more likely for two of my puppets' players in Astograth's second tier.

Alternatively, what if a player already has a contract somewhere else besides the host nations but is selected for the BoF XI?

Like i said, they are welcome to reject the offer. I would assume many players would Icly be playing for a domestic league in their home team, but even if theyre abroad an offer can always be made to buy a contract. Of course, it may be up to the foreign league to accept or reject, dependant on the terms the nations have between each other.
