This post is to confirm that the cutoff for entrance into the 34th edition of the Rugby Union Champions Trophy is set for 12:00pm CDT (UTC -5) on Saturday, June 6th. I will be using the same entry criteria and ranks as Apox was planning to introduce for this upcoming cycle.

Apox wrote:- Burgunden Brawlers as champions will be automatically entered into the group stage for RUCT 34.
- The top eight associations (Darmen, Apox, APOC Coalition, Lisander, Neu Engollon, Ko-oren, Filindostan and Alice Bay) are entitled to enter four teams into RUCT.
- Should Burgunden Brawlers not qualify as one of the top four teams from Neu Engollon, then they and the top three teams from Neu Engollon will compete in RUCT 34.
- All other associations currently ranked will be able to enter three teams to RUCT 34.
- New associations will be eligible to enter two teams into RUCT.

This change has been introduced to ensure a 32 team group format happens and allow associations below the top few to have a better chance of success in RUCT (as I previously noticed under a group stage of 20 teams, it tended to be teams from the same associations advancing). On the other hand, to discourage associations from signing up and then floating away, new associations will be capped at two teams. Of course, once that association has competed in one RUCT within the last five editions, they will be able to enter 3 teams.

Alba-Nuadh National Rugby Championship - Season 391 Preview

One of the three most important and culturally significant sports in Alba-Nuadh, rugby union (commonly referred to as rugby football or rugby) has enjoyed a great deal of popularity in the country, particularly in the English-speaking community as well as the French community.

While in Alba-Nuadh, most sports are organized on county or municipal level competition, rugby is the lone exception. The National Rugby Football Championship is contested each year between 12 of the top teams in the country. At the end of the year, the top four teams qualify for the playoff stage to compete for the right to be national champions, while the last-placed team is relegated to the Second Division.

While the sport is most popular in the English-speaking countries, the most dominant club in the history of the NRC are Druids, located in the capital city of Baile Shidni, with 29 national titles. The next two most successful clubs are Rangers RFC, from New Glasgow, and Citadel RFC, from Halafacs, with 21 titles each. Halafacs St. Andrews, the major rivals of Citadel, are next with 11 titles, followed by Puffins, from Badaig, with 9. After that, there are a number of clubs with a few titles. The first-ever champions of the NRC, all the way back in 265, were Druids. 125 seasons have since been completed, and the last season’s champions were Rangers RFC. The next season will take place in year 391 (years counted from the initial settlement of Gaels in Alba-Nuadh).

The NRC season takes place from spring to summer, with the championship match usually taking place on the same weekend as Lunastal (1 August). Fixtures played on Beltane (1 May) are a cultural institution and are usually massively-anticipated. The national championship final takes place each year at Halafacs Central Stadium, which seats 60,000 fans and is the second-largest stadium in the country, and the largest purpose-built for rugby.

Rugby union is the most popular form of the game in Alba-Nuadh, and the NRC season is eagerly awaited by fans across the country. With the next season on the horizon, let’s meet the 12 teams who will contest this years’ Championship.

Antigonish Celtic

Location: Antigonish, North Shore
Colours: Green and white
Coach: Niall O’Boyle
Ground: Antigonish Central Stadium (25,000)
Major Rivals: Rangers RFC, Cobh
Nicknames: Celtic, The Greens

National Titles: 4 (284, 319, 333, 336)

Starting XV: FB - Harrison Davis (25), RW - Tyler Bradley (27), OC - Eddie Garvin (23), IC - Troy Joyce (26), LW - Aaron MacNeil (29), FH - Archie Cochrane (33), SH - Ewan Spence (22) , N8 - Ruisín Ó Maoilbhríde (25), OF - Darius Campbell (24), BF - Kevin Murphy (27), RL - Julian Shaw (26), LL - Dominic MacGilroy (29), TP - Jasper Jones (32), HK - Elliot Turner (31), LP - Clark Lawson (24)

Season Preview: It was a rough season for Celtic last year, but this year there are some bright spots to watch out for. Ruisín Ó Maoilbhríde is the best player on this team, a very strong eighthman who is a great ball carrier. Other names to watch out for are Clark Lawson, who has had a strong start to his career with the club, and Jasper Jones, the veteran captain and leader of this team. Celtic will surely be safe from relegation, and there’s a chance they can push for a playoff position.

Club Overview: The club has strong roots in Antigonish’s Celtic community. The city is a majority Gaelic-speaking area on the mainland, and thus the club have deep local ties. The biggest rivalry match is with Rangers RFC, from New Glasgow, matches between these two are called the Northumberland derby due to both cities’ position on the Northumberland Sea. There’s also a bit of a cultural clash here, with Rangers coming from a majority English city. Cobh are another rival, however, this is more a carry-over from the history between the two areas in football and bandy and the rivalry isn’t as strong in the NRL - particularly as Cobh are not top-division regulars.

Citadel RFC

Location: Halafacs, Halafacs
Colours: Orange and blue
Coach: Declan Adams
Ground: Citadel Hill (40,000)
Major Rivals: Halafacs St. Andrews, Druids, Dartmouth
Nicknames: The Orange, The Downtowners, The Soldiers

National Titles: 21 (275, 289, 291, 293, 296, 299, 305, 308, 311, 314, 318, 322, 324, 338, 342, 347, 366, 369, 376, 377, 383)

Starting XV: FB - Callum Woods (27), RW - John Kelly (24), OC - Aaron Montgomery (29), IC - Alistar Milne (33), LW - Jordan Tait (24), FH - Leon Mason (26), SH - Carson Shields (25), N8 - Bruno Pearson (24), OF - Matthew Dixon (29), BF - Carter Barker (28), RL - Nathan Reynolds (22), LL - Milo Crawford (24), TP - Lincoln McGill (25), HK - Hunter Grant (33), LP - Dean O’Toole (26)

Season Preview: It’s been 7 years since Citadel won the national title - and in that time they’ve had to watch hated rivals like Halafacs St. Andrews and Druids add to their own trophy cabinets. The Orange are back with a strong squad this year, however, and many fans feel this is their year. Dean O’Toole is the star of the team, always a consistent performer in his years with the Orange, while the two locks, Nathan Reynolds and Milo Crawford, have also been excellent in past years - and both under 25 with plenty of room to develop further. Some feel they might need some improvement on the wings, however, with John Kelly and Jordan Tait perhaps still a bit raw. The expectation for Citadel, as it is every year, is that they will be competing for the national title.

Club Overview: Located directly in downtown Halafacs, with a stadium at the bottom of that city’s most famous landmark (Citadel Hill), Citadel RFC are one of the most historic clubs in the country. Halafacs is the second largest city in the country and the largest on the mainland, and Citadel’s supporters generally come from the downtown core as well as the suburbs. As one of the biggest clubs in the English-speaking part of the country, they also draw support from all over Alba-Nuadh. The club’s biggest rival are Halafacs St. Andrews, a local derby of course, as well as their rivalry with Druids - this one is more of a competitive rivalry between two of the most successful sides in NRL history. Finally, neighbours across the bridge Dartmouth RFC are also a rival, however, Dartmouth are not near the same level of success as Citadel, and thus this isn’t the biggest rivalry for the club.

Diogbaidh RFC

Location: Diogbaidh, Annapolis
Colours: Blue and white
Coach: Rhys Noble
Ground: Diogbaidh Park (20,000)
Major Rivals: Annapolis RFC
Nicknames: The Skyblues, The Scallops

National Titles: 1 (280)

Starting XV: FB - Stíofán Ó Báire (25), RW - Christopher Woods (27), OC - Stefan Byrne (24), IC - Lawrence Fisher (29), LW - Aonghus Ó hAinle (22), FH - Ciaran MacCraine (25), SH - Síoda Ó Síoghraidh (24), N8 - Anmchadh Mac Iomaire (27), OF - Alistair MacLennen (27), BF - Luke Thompson (30), RL - Jonah O’Hanragthy (31), LL - Logan Walsh (25), TP - Harvey O’Rorke (23), HK - Douglas Powell (26), LP - Nic Burke (22)

Season Preview: The Skyblues often find themselves near the bottom of the NRL table - other than the golden year of 280, but that was over 100 years ago now. To be frank, we really don’t see any situation in which Diogbaidh are doing anything other than fighting off relegation, and this might just be the year that they do go down. If anyone is going to keep them up, it’ll be Aonghus O hAinle, one of the better young left wings in the league and undoubtedly Diogbaidh’s star. They have a poor group of forwards, however, with Nic Burke probably the best of the bunch. Expect them to be at or near the bottom this year.

Club Overview: Prior to the Gaelic Ascension and the gradual swing in population base in this country from the mainland to Cheap Breatainn, Diogbaidh (formerly Digby) was one of the more important towns in the Annapolis Valley and the south. Afterwards, however, the town became less relevant, mainly backed up by the bounty of scallop fishing in the waters off the shore. Today, Diogbaidh remains a blue-collar town, and the rugby team is central to the town’s identity. The fans know they aren’t a winner, but a few memorable moments every so often are enough to keep their identity - and winning against local rivals Annapolis RFC is a must. Annapolis are, of course, the biggest rivals, and with the clubs equally starved for silverware in their history, it’s a rivalry that has gone back and forth often across the years.

Druids

Location: Baile Shidni, Cheap Breatainn
Colours: Green and gold
Coach: Conall Bradley
Ground: Druids Park (50,000)
Major Rivals: Citadel RFC, Teampall, Puffins, Rangers RFC
Nicknames: Druids, The Green and Gold

National Titles: 29 (265, 269, 270, 273, 274, 276, 286, 294, 295, 303, 306, 309, 315, 325, 339, 343, 345, 349, 351, 356, 361, 362, 363, 364, 370, 372, 380, 385, 388)

Starting XV: FB - Daibhi Ó Maoilbhrighde (26), RW - Bobby Donoghue (23), OC - Oscar Maher (27), IC - Harrison Keevan (30), LW - Eoin O Doibhilin (29), FH - Milo Davies (29), SH - Íor Ó Fearghaile (27), N8 - Daighre Mac Mathúna (26), OF - Dabhag Ó Cianáin (26), BF - Tom Ramsey (24), RL - Alex McFarlane (23), LL - Cormag MacRiocaird (26), TP - Martainn MacÀidh (25), HK - Maine Mac Aonghusa (28), LP - Olly McGuire (28)

Season Preview: Druids fans will be hoping this is the year their team gets back to the promised land, and with an excellent squad, there’s no reason why they can’t. Arguably the best group of forwards in the league, they are also strong at the back. On the wing, the Druids are led by the man widely considered to be the best player in the league in Bobby Donoghue. Donoghue was the hottest prospect in the country from a very young age, and he’s been everything the Druids have expected of him since breaking into the first team a few years ago. He’s a true star in this league, and the new face of this historic club. The fans expect #30 to be on its way this year, and Druids have every chance of pulling it off.

Club Overview: Historically the most successful club in the country, Druids are also one of the best-supported clubs in the country. Based in the national capital of Baile Shidni, the club have become the symbol of the Gaelic community’s participation in rugby, and as a result one of the traditionally most community-based clubs in the league. They hold the record for most championships in national history with 29, and Druids Park is filled to the brim each and every match. The club’s biggest rivalry is with Citadel RFC, who are considered to be the historic big club of the English community and also one of the most successful clubs. This rivalry is thus based in both competition, history and culture. Teampall are the other club located in Baile Shidni, and thus there is a local element to this rivalry, although the neighbours are far less successful than Druids. Other rivalries are with Puffins, another club from Cheap Breatainn whom Druids have had a great deal of competition with, as well as Rangers, who have also been a competitive rival for Druids in years past. Still, for Druids supporters, nothing is more important than beating Citadel.

Halafacs St. Andrews

Location: Halafacs, Halafacs
Colours: Blue and white
Coach: Eddie Moore
Ground: St. Andrews’ Park (35,000)
Major Rivals: Citadel RFC, Leomhainn, Stallions
Nicknames: Saints

National Titles: 11 (271, 278, 279, 290, 304, 316, 340, 367, 378, 384, 389)

Starting XV: FB - Archer McCormack (27), RW - Ruairi Lynch (22), OC - Charlie Spence (25), IC - Jay Lawson (28), LW - Stephen Bruce (25), FH - Keir Wallace (34), SH - Marcus Murray (28), N8 - Alistair Ward (26), OF - Ian Stewart (25), BF - Robert Crawford (25), RL - Harry Smith (27), LL - Jamie Watson (24), TP - Steven Murray (26), HK - Carter Kane (29), LP - Elliot McDougal (21)

Season Preview: Saints are one of the top clubs in the league still, 2 years removed from their most recent triumph now, and led by an excellent forward core led by Carter Kane are surely contenders for this years’ national title. While many of the key players in this squad - Kane, Keir Wallace and Marcus Murray, for example - are getting older, there’s also great hope for the future in Ruairi Lynch and Elliot McDougal, two of the most highly-regarded young players in the league. Saints will be looking to once again challenge for a title, and with a mixture of veteran players from their recent triumphs and future stars should have a very good chance of doing exactly that.

Club Overview: One of the oldest rugby clubs in the country, Halafacs St. Andrews was founded by members of the St. Andrews Parish Church in north Halafacs and quickly rose to become an institution of the north Halafacs community. The club enjoyed a great deal of success in the early years of the NRC, before a very long spell of mediocrity in the mid-300s that was marked by only 1 title in 340. In recent years, however, the club have returned to their past heights, and over the last 10 years have been one of the most successful clubs in the league. Today, the club’s main base of support still remains in north Halafacs, but as one of the premier clubs in the league their supporters are spread across the country. The biggest rivals are all local: Citadel RFC is the major rivalry, as the two clubs are the most successful in Halafacs. Leomhainn are another club based in north Halafacs and thus there’s definitely competition between the two, while Stallions, the club from the western part of the city, are another rivalry for the club.

Inbhir Nis

Location: Inbhir Nis, Cheap Breaitainn
Colours: Blue and green
Coach: Eoghan Brun
Ground: Blues Park (20,000)
Major Rivals: Mabu
Nicknames: The Blues

National Titles: 4 (292, 334, 354, 357)

Starting XV: FB - Caomhainn Màrnach (31), RW - Ailpein Cèamp (27), OC - Fionnghall MacCaog (28), IC - Fionn MacAbhsalain (26), LW - Bricín Mac Con Mhaighe (25), FH - Íomhar Ó Céitinn (24), SH - Sebastien Devlin (26), N8 - Cillian Cairns (28), OF - Lucas Maxwell (26), BF - Jack Connelly (21), RL - Stefan Duncan (27), LL - Ivan Andrews (30), TP - Connor Matthews (24), HK - Criomthann Ó Flannagáin (27), LP - Séan Mac Duibh (22)

Season Preview: Traditionally the definition of mid-table, Inbhir Nis have managed to assemble a collection of solid young players who give hope to break free from that dichotomy in the future. This year, however, is likely to be more of the same as those players - with Jack Connelly, Connor Matthews and Sean Mac Duibh leading the way - continue their development process. Bricin Mac Con Mhaighe, meanwhile, continues to be the star of the team. It’s been a while since the Blues took a national title, but that hasn’t taken away the hope of their fanbase that this year could be theirs. Expect Inbhir Nis to be their usual mid-table selves this season.

Club Overview: Never really overachievers, but never really underachievers either, Inbhir Nis are one of the most passionately supported clubs in the league and draw a large support network from southwestern Cape Breton. The club, much like the town, are very proud of their Gaelic roots, and non-local players didn’t play for the club until the year 340. There is, therefore, still a strong emphasis on youth development, but an unfortunate lack of resources to keep those players in the future. The main rivals are the neighbours, Mabu being located further south along the same coast. The clubs haven’t played in a few years as Mabu’s fortunes have kept them in the second tier, but when they meet again eventually it’s sure to be as fierce as ever.

Leomhainn

Location: Halafacs, Halafacs
Colours: Yellow and white
Coach: Isaac Boyle
Ground: Lions Park (30,000)
Major Rivals: Halafacs St. Andrews, Stallions, Citadel RFC
Nicknames: Lions

National Titles: 4 (307, 320, 355, 368)

Starting XV: FB - Hugh Fleming (24), RW - Peter O’Nolan (28), OC - Leo O’Malley (27), IC - Rowan O’Mahoney (22), LW - Shay O’Mulrian (32), FH - Frank MacBrady (35), SH - Tim O’Leary (28), N8 - Andrew O’Donovan (23), OF - Zac O’Tracy (26), BF - Ross Linehan (28), RL - Conn Kilpatrick (22), LL - Sean O’Ahren (25), TP - Tyler Cormick (27), HK - Albert Jones (29), LP - Robbie Geary (30)

Season Preview: Leomhainn will be an interesting side to follow this season. On one hand, they have a decent forward core that can compete with most sides in the division. On the other hand, however, the backs are probably the worst in the league and the club have also overall struggled defensively in recent years. They will need to pull things together quickly, otherwise Lions could be facing a harsh relegation after a few years of top-division stability.

Club Overview: After the Gaelic Ascendancy in Alba-Nuadh, dated between 150-175, Gaels continued to settle in the young nation in large numbers. While much of the settlement was focused on Cheap Breatainn and the North Shore, the urban centre of Halafacs was beginning to see new arrivals as well. The Gaelic community in Halafacs settled mostly in the north end, and eventually, the rugby club Leomhainn (Lions) was formed to represent the community. While they haven’t been the most successful throughout history, they are beloved locally. Growing their fanbase outside of north Halafacs has been a challenge, however. The club’s main rival are Halafacs St. Andrews, their north end neighbours, and the club also have rivalries with the other clubs in the city such as Stallions and Citadel.

Liverpool RFC

Location: Liverpool, South Shore
Colours: Red and white
Coach: Calvin Adams
Ground: Rugby Park (20,000)
Main Rivals: Yarmouth RFC
Nicknames: The Privateers

National Titles: 2 (285, 337)

Starting XV: FB - Coby Barrett (25), RW - Reece Duncan (22), OC - Daniel Riley (25), IC - Tristan Jenkins (29), LW - Marcus Mitchell (32), FH - Zac Dixon (25), SH - Aston Mitchell (28), N8 - Billy Gibson (24), OF - Isaac Gallagher (26), BF - Stephen Wright (28), RL - Leon Holmes (27), LL - Nicholas Lewis (23), TP - Charles Harrison (26), HK - Fletcher Burns (27), LP - Charlie Hawkins (24)

Season Preview: It’s been a rough few seasons for the Privateers, as Liverpool have mainly been involved in battles to remain in the top division of the league. They seem to be out of the darkest days, however, and in particular this forward group looks quite good - led by the strength of Nicholas Lewis and the skill of Fletcher Burns. There’s more hope coming as well, as the club are very high on young prospect Declan Collins. He’s not in the first team picture just yet at 18, but could be there in the future. For Liverpool, the expectation this year is to keep growing as a team and work to push further up the table.

Club Overview: Liverpool is a rugby-mad town located on the South Shore between Halafacs and Yarmouth. A coastal town, it had a long history of privateering in the past, which became an identity for the town and its rugby club. The team means everything to the town, and even though they haven’t had success in recent years, it’s a religious-like devotion. A mural outside the Rugby Park depicts the 337 national championship-winning squad, who are heroes to this day in the town. It’s been quite a while since there was any glory for the Privateers, however, and the first squad to bring them back to the top will surely be immortal. The club’s biggest rivals are Yarmouth RFC, who are located further down the South Shore, and have an equal passion for their club.

Puffins

Location: Badaig, Cheap Breatainn
Colours: Black and orange
Coach: James Cowan
Ground: St. Michael’s Park (30,000)
Major Rivals: Druids, Cobh
Nicknames: Puffins

National Titles: 10 (267, 297, 301, 326, 328, 329, 330, 335, 341, 344)

Starting XV: FB - Isaac Darcy (25), RW - Jesse O’Farrelly (23), OC - Brandon O’Henry (27), IC - David O’Brallaghan (26), LW - Phillip MacBreen (29), FH - Zack Queally (31), SH - Max O’Duggan (24), N8 - Odhran O’Glissane (27), OC - Reece Mongan (24), BF - Phillip O’Galvin (26), RL - Victor MacClancey (29), LL - Seb Jennings (31), TP - Cam Crowe (30), HK - Shane O’Lowry (25), LP - Gerard MacKenna (27)

Season Preview: This might actually be Puffins’ year, after so many years of coming so close but remaining yet so far from that elusive 11th title. Puffins have perhaps the strongest group of backs in the league, led by Jesse O’Farrelly, who might just be the second best right wing in the league today after Bobby Donoghue. Don’t underestimate the role Reece Mongan has in this team, either, a superb tackler. Puffins are a tricky team, and they will provide a challenge for anyone who goes against them. The question with the club is, as always, can they get it done when it matters most.

Club Overview: Death, taxes and Puffins fans claiming this is their year. Those are the three certainties of life in Alba-Nuadh, and to the great disdain of their fanbase, they’ve been wrong for 43 straight years. Puffins, based in the city of Badaig located on Loch Bhra d’Or, are one of the league’s most historic clubs. They were the first true dynasty in the league in the late 320s, capturing 4 titles in 5 years and being considered almost unbeatable at the time. Since the last title in 344, however, they’ve been bridesmaids far too often. The hope in Badaig, and central Cheap Breatainn along the lakes where much of their support is based, is that finally the club will put it all together and get back on what they consider their rightful place at the top. The club’s biggest rivals are Druids, as they are undoubtedly the two most historically successful clubs from the island of Cheap Breatainn and represent its two sides - Druids the urban Baile Shidni, Puffins the rural heartland. Another rival is Cobh, who are the closest team geographically to the club but have not enjoyed much success in their history.

Rangers RFC

Location: New Glasgow, Northumberland
Colours: Blue, red, white
Coach: Carter Grant
Ground: Rangers Park (35,000)
Main Rivals: Citadel RFC, Antigonish Celtic, Truru RFC, Druids
Nicknames: Rangers, Blue and Red

National Titles: 21 (266, 277, 282, 283, 298, 310, 313, 317, 323, 332, 350, 352, 358, 359, 360, 365, 373, 375, 379, 382, 390)

Starting XV: FB - Charlie Douglas (28), RW - Harris Hill (23), OC - Oscar Rodgers (28), IC - Ewan Harper (24), LW - Lennon Ramsey (24), FH - Jon Houston (27), SH - Hamish O’Neil (25), N8 - Scott Wilson (24), OF - Dylan Cunningham (27), BF - Declan Mitchell (22), RL - Vincent Law (22), LL - Joey Quinn (27), TP - Lyle Anderson (23), HK - Duncan Robb (29), LP - Joseph MacGuire (26)

Season Preview: The defending champions, Rangers will surely be looking to take home the title for a second straight year and give themselves a bit of bragging rights over hated rivals Citadel, with whom they are currently level on 21 titles each with. For Rangers, the way is led by the wingers Harris Hill and Lennon Ramsey. Ramsey in particular is a player whom many consider to be the best in the league - indeed, there’s a fierce debate in Alba-Nuadh rugby circles over who is the better player between Ramsey and Druids’ Bobby Donoghue. At least in recent years, Ramsey has gotten the better of Donoghue in the league, and we look forward to them renewing the rivalry this year. Overall, though, Rangers have an excellent side and should once again be competing for the league title.

Club Overview: One of the oldest and most successful clubs in the country, Rangers are also one of the most popular in the land. Probably the third biggest in the country after Druids and Citadel in terms of support, the club have seemingly always been good - their 21 championships good to be second-best all time, and they are usually in the running each year. The club’s identity is within the broader English community of Alba-Nuadh, with a focus on New Glasgow of course. Rangers supporters, thus, can be found in most parts of the province. The club’s fiercest rivals are Citadel RFC, the other big club on the mainland with whom they have often competed with for titles over the years. Antigonish Celtic are the local rivals who also provide a bit of a cultural focus for the rivalry, but Antigonish have not been nearly as successful as the New Glasgow club. Truru RFC are another local rival, although they face a similar challenge as Antigonish in terms of historic success. Finally, there’s a rivalry with Druids, born out of great competition in the history of the league. Between the years 358 and 365, for example, the two clubs were the only ones who reached the playoff final, splitting 4 championships between them. With the rise to prominence of Rangers’ Lennon Ramsey and Druids’ Bobby Donoghue in recent years, there’s every reason to believe this storied rivalry is about to gain another excellent chapter.

Teampall

Location: Baile Shidni, Cheap Breatainn
Colours: Blue and black
Coach: Leo Dolan
Ground: Falmouth Docks (35,000)
Major Rivals: Druids
Nicknames: Tempest, the Storm

National Titles: 4 (287, 346, 371, 381)

Starting XV: FB - Lughaidh Mac Grudaire (32), RW - Rumann Ó Rathaille (27), OC - Senan Mac Reachtain (24), IC - Acobhrán Ó Conradh (30), LW - Stíofán Ó Dulchaointigh (26), FH - Bréanainn Mac Géidigh (29), SH - Alexander Millea (27), N8 - Aodh Ó Maoilmhiadhaigh (30), OF - Meallán Ó hArrachtáin (24), BF - Íomhar Ó Gibealáin (27), RL - Mochuma Mac Fhiachra (23), LL - Risteard MacCarmaig (29), TP - Fearchar Caoidheach (30), HK - Fionn MacGhearailt (24), LP - Sachairi Blàr (26)

Season Preview: Teampall, or Tempest, have had a difficult few seasons since winning the title in 381, and a club that once seemed destined to be at the very top of the league for a long time is now struggling to stay midtable in the league. Lughaidh Mac Grudaire is the only player remaining from the title-winning squad, and you could make a case that Rumannn O Rathaille and Sachairi Blar are the only players in the squad who have lived up to their past expectations. Tempest lack identity, really, which has always historically been the club’s biggest problem. Expect them to be in the midtable this year as they try to work out the road ahead.

Club Overview: Very much the second team in Baile Shidni - a fact Druids fans will never let them forget - Teampall have carved out a niche for themselves as a blue-collar club in the capital city, best represented by their stadium in the heart of the city’s main port area. In addition, the club have a heavy focus on their Gaelic roots, and as a result have strong local ties and work hard at developing their youth system. Historically, Teampall were never quite successful, a lone title in 287 being the lone bright point for many years. In recent years, however, they’ve become more stable, and have done a much better job at building competitive squads. The club’s biggest, and really only true rivals, are Druids, the cross-town enemies. Druids, of course, mainly set their sights elsewhere, but the Shidni rivalry matches are always heated regardless.

Truru RFC

Location: Truru, Cobequid
Colours: Black and red
Coach: Rory Adams
Ground: Salmon Park (30,000)
Major Rivals: Rangers RFC, Amherst RFC
Nicknames: The Bearcats

National Titles: 2 (281, 387)

Starting XV: FB - Leighton Miller (27), RW - Alan Moss (26), OC - Arthur Hamilton (33), IC - Jack Kane (24), LW - Miles Byrne (27), FH - Albert Doyle (24), SH - Richard Collins (28), N8 - Chester Burke (22), OF - Louis Parker (27), BF - Reece Martin (25), RL - Archer Harrison (29), LL - Scott Holland (27), TP - Jude Keating (31), HK - Austin O’Dea (28), LP - William Wright (26)

Season Preview: It’s been 3 seasons since Truru’s famous once-in-a-lifetime title win, and while much of the squad remains the same since then - particularly hero Arthur Hamilton - they haven’t been able to recapture the same magic. Realistically, they probably won’t this season either, and this mostly average squad will likely be midtable again. Chester Burke looks like a good one, though, and young winger Lochlan Stevens will be on the bench this season but is a tipped by many to be on the road to greatness. The title win a few seasons ago allowed Truru’s fans to dream permanently, and while they aren’t at all favourites, perhaps lightning can strike twice.

Club Overview: The connection between the town of Truru and the rugby club is a rare, deeply strong bond that survived over 100 years without a championship following the golden year of 281. The club became used to mediocrity over that time span. Then, in the 387 season, everything seemed to go right - the club snuck into the playoffs on the last day of the season, and two upset victories later were national champions for the first time in 106 years. The outpouring of joy, the pure euphoria of seeing your club win the title after that long a gap, of finally fulfilling a generational dream, hasn’t quite left the Salmon Park stands just yet. Truru itself is a town considered the ‘hub’ of Alba-Nuadh due to its transportation links to most parts of the country, and it’s a very blue-collar town. The club’s biggest rivalries are all local - Rangers RFC are the biggest, as the Truru-New Glasgow rivalry continues here. Rangers are, however, far more successful than Truru, although Truru did get a famous derby win by defeating Rangers in the semifinal en route to their championship in 387. The other rivalry, which has been arguably more heated especially in recent years, is with Amherst RFC. The clubs have proximity in geographic terms as well as in competition to create that contempt, and if Amherst manage to return to the top tier soon the clubs can renew their hostilities.

The next season of the Alba-Nuadh National Rugby Championship starts soon - be sure to stay tuned in for updates as we look to crown another champion.

An excellent season so far for Druids, as they claim top spot in the NRC league table. As a result, they will receive the National Shield as regular season champions. The club were led, of course, by the excellent performance of their star man Bobby Donoghue, who led the league in tries for the first time in his career. A huge set of wins in back-to-back rivalry matches against Citadel (23-13) and Rangers (30-10) in the second half of the season sent them well on their way to the top. Now they will enter the playoffs and seek to claim title number 30.

Following closely behind are Citadel RFC, who put up the best defensive performance in the league this year. The key for Citadel was the play of Bruno Pearson as the number 8, who had a brilliant break-out year for the club. In addition, the criticism of the wingers Kelly and Tait seemed to disappear throughout the season as they performed quite well. Citadel will feel, however, poorly about their loss to Rangers on matchweek 20 - a win over their hated rivals would have given them the number one position.

Coming in third are Puffins and for their fans, the playoffs ahead are going to be eagerly anticipated. Jesse O’Farrelly was everything the club was hoping he would be, and he had a particularly key role in several of Puffins’ very close late-season wins, including a 7-0 win over Halafacs St. Andrews on the penultimate matchday that enabled them to qualify for the playoffs with a win over Diogbaidh on the final day. A playoff date with Citadel awaits, and with the sides splitting their regular season matches it should be a good one.

Rounding out the playoff positions are Halafacs St. Andrews, who despite a rough stretch mid-season that included an embarrassing loss to north Halafacs neighbours Leomhainn, pulled it together later in the season to win 3 of their last 4 matches, including a final day destruction of the rival Lions, to earn their spot in the playoffs. It’s a difficult road ahead for them, however, as Bobby Donoghue and Druids await in the first round.

Antigonish Celtic will be very disappointed to have missed out on the playoffs this season after an excellent campaign from their team, especially after they had managed some special results this season including doing the double over Druids for the first time in many years. The club were actually at the top of the table after 16 matches, so will be disappointed to have allowed that lead to slip away. While they managed to get the upper hand on that rival, things were not as good for the club in their matches against hated rivals Rangers. The final-day home loss to Rangers saw Antigonish Celtic knocked out of the playoff positions. There’s definitely something to build off of here, however, and Ruisín Ó Maoilbhríde was as good as Celtic fans claimed he’d be.

It was a challenging year, meanwhile, for defending champions Rangers RFC. The club had an excellent start to the year, leading the league at the halfway point with a 7-2-2 record. After a 13-13 draw against Druids in the year which saw Lennon Ramsey go head to head with Bobby Donoghue, hopes were high across the league that the return fixture would be as good. Unfortunately for Rangers, Ramsey suffered a torn ACL the week prior against Diogbaidh in the final stages of their 12-3 win. Without Ramsey, Rangers were crushed 30-10 by Druids and their season fell apart thereafter as the club went 3-5 to close out the season and miss the playoffs. It’s not the end of the world, and the club can point to their early season success as a bright spot for next year, but it is certainly not how they wanted this season to go. Knocking Antigonish Celtic out of the playoffs on the last day will provide some consolation, but that will be erased if Citadel are able to go on and win the league.

Truru RFC supporters can be proud of their team’s effort this season, as they performed well in several key matches, and earned a win and a draw with hated rival Rangers. What’s better for their supporters is that Lochlan Stevens made quite an impression in his limited appearances this year, and it seems he’ll be in the first team quite soon. Of course, there's some disappointment at missing out on the playoffs after being in the race all season, and in a playoff spot with just 2 games left. Inbhir Nis had pretty much the season everyone expected of them, they can be particularly happy with Connor Matthews’ performance this year as the young player continued to develop well. Inbhir Nis supporters were particularly proud of their club’s 10-3 win over Druids this season, and see it as a sign of good things to come in the future.

Teampall, meanwhile, had a season that won’t live up to their expectations. Rumann Ó Rathaille was by far the squad’s best performer, but the club had hoped to be a bit higher than 9th place, even if they accept that playoffs are unlikely. What was worse was how the team completely rolled over in rivalry matches against Druids this year, losing them by a combined score of 35-13. It was a learning season for Liverpool RFC, meanwhile, and there’s new faith in right wing Reece Duncan who had an excellent breakthrough year for the Privateers. They can learn from this campaign, and take pride in results like their matchday 11 36-20 win over Druids. That win saw them kick off a strong second half of the season after a poor first half had many tipping them for relegation.

At the bottom, Diogbaidh RFC will be relieved to have escaped relegation this year but know that they must be better in the future. Aonghus Ó hAinle was the player the club needed him to be, but there are question marks around a few other players in the squad, and it might just be time that the old guard are phased out. Relegated are Leomhainn, who were, quite simply, horrid for much of the season. A final day drubbing by their biggest rivals Halafacs St. Andrews 31-3 summed up the campaign, although Leomhainn fans will have a few memories to take with them down to the second division, including wins over Rangers and St. Andrews earlier in the season. It’ll be a fight for them to come back up in the tricky Tier 2, however, and fans will have to prepare for a difficult go next season.

Cobh were the favourites going into this season, and they delivered on that promise with an excellent campaign that saw them lose only 3 matches in the league campaign. Chanso, their local rivals, were on their heels for most of the season, and just managed to beat out Amherst RFC for the second place position and a trip to the playoffs. The one-off playoff final will take place at Halafacs Central Stadium (60,000) and see the winner of the match replace Leomhainn in the top division next season.

Tier 2 Playoff Final

Cobh 26-16 Chanso, at Halafacs Central Stadium, Halafacs

And Cobh confirmed what seemed to be inevitable: they’re going back up. They were in control of this one all the way, taking a 15-3 lead into the half before finishing things up early in the second half. Chanso would apply some pressure late, but it was not enough, and they lose out to their local rivals in the final and will have to wait at least another year before their return to Tier 1.

With the regular season completed, it is time to determine a national champion! The top 4 teams from the league have qualified for the playoffs. In the first round, the higher-ranked team from the regular season will have home advantage. The final match will take place at Halafacs Central Stadium (60,000) in Halafacs.

NRC Playoffs First Round

Druids 20-14 Halafacs St. Andrews, at Druids Park, Baile Shidni

Citadel RFC 20-34 Puffins, at Citadel Hill, Halafacs

An all-Cheap Breatainn national championship game! Halafacs St. Andrews gave Druids fans a bit of a scare early when they took the lead early in their semifinal match, but a second half surge from the home side sent Druids to the championship game yet again. In the other semifinal, Citadel RFC took an early lead and seemed to be holding onto it, but Puffins came out for the second half with renewed energy and led by Jesse O’Farrelly got the win and advanced to the championship game.

So, meeting at the Halafacs Central Stadium will be Druids and Puffins. Two excellent teams who have had great years and will believe that this is their year. On one side, Bobby Donoghue looking to cap off an excellent individual season with his first national title with Druids, and the underdog Puffins on the other, led by Jesse O’Farrelly. Regional bragging rights as well as the right to call yourself national champion are on the line.

National Championship Final

Druids 30-20 Puffins, at Halafacs Central Stadium, Halafacs

Druids are national champions! Fittingly, they score 30 points in the game in which they capture their 30th title, and the celebrations are underway in Baile Shidni. Puffins took the lead with an early try in the first half, but the skill of Druids and their leader Bobby Donoghue proved too much for the side from Badaig. While Puffins would rally back late, it wasn’t enough to break their championship drought, and Druids are champions again!

Going forward, the National Rugby Championship and the Alba-Nuadh Rugby Board (ANRB) will be sending club teams to compete in the Rugby Union Champions Trophy, beginning with edition 34 of that tournament. The ANRB has elected to send the national champions as well as the runner-up in the final to the tournament. Therefore, representing Alba-Nuadh in the first competition will be Druids and Puffins.

The Alba-Nuadh Rugby Board looks forward to the next season of club competition in the country, and wishes Druids and Puffins the best of luck at RUCT 34.

According to Background, Preview and Results, the possible United 10 qualifiers are:

Alice Bay (ALB):
Osea (Champions)
Southland (Runners-up)
Cape Orion (Semifinalist)

Heemstra (HEE):
Stellen Province (Semifinalist)

Yet, providing this is a new and multi-associational league and it's not like only Heemstraner teams aren't joining the Unions Cup, I'll leave this decision up to Darmen.

Just FYI,Lisander should come next.

Procedural Notes
  • The newly installed Darmeni leadership of the RUCT organizing committee would like to offer their thanks to their Apoxian predecessors for assistance in the organization of this edition of the competition.
  • 52 teams from 17 leagues (and 18 associations) were submitted for entry into RUCT 34. These include the late entries from Lisander, whose association is gently reminded to not take so long next time.
  • Burgunden Brawlers (NEG) as reigning RUCT champions, will have automatic entrance into the group stage. The 16 other league champions entered into the RUCT will join them in having automatic entrance to the group stage.
  • This leaves 15 places in the group stage for the remaining 35 teams. A first and second preliminary round will be held. The six teams who were their league's 4th seeds, plus four additional 3rd seeds will participate in the first preliminary round, with the remaining 25 teams beginning their campaign in the second preliminary round.
  • As the association code of ALB is already held by Alice Bay, Alba-Nuadh was temporarily given the code of ABN. If it so desires, the association may propose a different code to be used beginning with the next edition of the RUCT.
  • The organizers of the RUCT were surprised that they received no host bids for the RUCT final. They were even more surprised when they realized they had never asked for hosts bids in the first place! For this edition, the final will be held at the 50,000 seat National Rugby Stadium in Scott City, Darmen. Associations may bid to host the RUCT final in future editions, but if no bids are received then the National Rugby Stadium will serve as the host site.
  • If you notice any mistakes, please feel free to smack the nearest Darmeni member of the RUCT organizing committee with a rotten trout. You should probably also point out what they got wrong too.
