I can confirm that reading (good) foreign domestic leagues is one of my favorite things to do on NS Sport. Especially when my own players are involved, as it gives me rooting interests and a stake in the proceedings.

I would hope that a few people enjoy reading mine too.

Depends. Are we talking about normal in general, or normal from the perspective of a weirdo who spends time on NS? ;)

UEFA is making all sorts of exciting changes to the Champions League for the 2018–21 cycle, like putting all four teams from the top four associations straight into the group stage, bumping the champions of associations 11 and 12 out, and leaving just 6 spots available for teams coming through the qualifying rounds.

We’re sure as hell not doing any of that, but there are some more sensible changes I’m going to make starting in season 72.

  • Association 4 will be entitled to enter four teams (instead of three) in the Champions’ Cup. Associations 7–8 will be entitled to enter three teams (instead of two) in the Champions’ Cup.
  • Eighteen teams (instead of sixteen) will enter the Champions’ Cup at the group stage: the champions of associations 1–12, the runners-up of associations 1–4, and the titleholders of the Champions’ Cup and Globe Cup. Any vacancy will be filled by the champions of associations 13 and below.
  • Consequently, the number of teams entering the group stage from the non-champions’ path will be reduced to six (from eight). The champions’ path will continue to have eight teams advance to the group stage.
  • In the revised non-champions’ path, no teams will enter at the play-off round. The third-placed teams of associations 1–4 and runners-up of associations 5–8 will enter at the third preliminary round. The remaining thirty-two teams (fourth-placed teams of associations 1–4, third-placed teams of associations 5–8, and runners-up of associations 9–32) will enter at the second preliminary round. Any vacancies will be filled by promoting runners-up of associations 9 and below to the third preliminary round.
  • In the champions’ path, the champions of associations 13–32 will enter at the third preliminary round.

UEFA is also changing the Europa League to include all league champions eliminated from the Champions League—like UICA has been doing since before it was UICA—and creating a protected path for twelve league champions to enter the Europa League group stage (eight winners of the Europa League play-off round and four losers of the Champions League play-off round). I like the idea, but it turns out it’s mathematically infeasible, given an arbitrary number of entries, to set up such a protected path so that 8 league champions advance to the Champions’ Cup group stage and the number that advance to the Globe Cup group stage is also an integer (even if you don’t care what that integer is). What I’ll do instead is:

  • The eight losing teams from the Champions’ Cup play-off round, champions’ path will skip the Globe Cup qualifying round and enter the group stage.
  • No teams will enter the Globe Cup at the play-off round. Instead, thirty-two places in the third preliminary round will be reserved for the seventh-placed teams of associations 1–4, fifth-placed teams of associations 5–8, fourth-placed teams of associations 9–12, and third-placed teams of associations 13–32. Eight places in the second preliminary round will be reserved for the sixth-placed teams of associations 5–8 and fifth-placed teams of associations 9–12.
  • The sixteen teams entering the Globe Cup at the group stage will be the fifth- and sixth-placed teams of associations 1–4, the fourth-placed teams of associations 5–8, and the third-placed teams of associations 9–12.
  • In the event that the fourth-placed team of one of the associations ranked 1–4 is placed in the Globe Cup because both the Champions’ Cup and Globe Cup titleholders are from the same association and neither qualified for the Champions’ Cup through its domestic league, it will enter the group stage in addition to the usual sixteen direct entrants (instead of always reserving a place for this scenario, which has never actually happened and has always resulted in the third-placed team from association 13 being promoted to the group stage).

Here’s how these rules would have looked if applied to last season’s entries:

Procedural notes
  • As Eura is allowed a fourth entry to the Champions’ Cup, Ulsa is promoted to the Champions’ Cup and Holdenberg enters the Globe Cup.
  • As Pasarga and Valanora are allowed a third entry to the Champions’ Cup, Tanrısal and FC Capri are promoted to the Champions’ Cup and Lunas FC and Samarga United enter the Globe Cup.

Changes will also be made to the coëfficient ranking:

  • Club coëfficients will no longer include a bonus of 20% of the association’s coëfficient. Instead, if a club’s coëfficient would be less than 20% of its association’s coëfficient, it will receive 20% of its association’s coëfficient in place of any points it earned itself. If two or more clubs have an equal coëfficient, they will be ranked by points earned by the clubs themselves (disregarding the association coëfficient), then by points earned by the clubs themselves in each most recent season, then by their respective associations’ rankings.
  • The points awarded to clubs eliminated from the Globe Cup prior to the group stage will be increased to 0.5 for the first preliminary round, 1.0 for the second preliminary round, 1.5 for the third preliminary round, 2.0 for the play-off round, and 2.5 for the qualifying round. These points will no longer be included in the association coëfficient; associations will only receive the halved points for matches won and drawn in these rounds. (Consequently, an association whose clubs lose every single match in a season will earn 0.000 points, unless they receive bonus points for participation in the Champions’ Cup group stage. For the purpose of the ranking, a participant’s “0.000” will be treated as greater than a non-participant’s “—”, so, e.g., an association that earned 0.000 points in season 71 would be ranked ahead of an association that earned 0.000 points in season 69.)
  • No bonus points will be awarded for participation in the Globe Cup group stage, but clubs that earn fewer than 3 points from matches won and drawn in the group stage will be awarded 3.0 points instead of the actual number of points earned. Their association will be credited with the actual number of points earned.

The coëfficient ranking issued at the end of season 71 will reflect these changes. Since some people might like to predict what their ranking will be at the end of the season, I have prepared a preliminary version of that ranking that (obviously) omits the values for season 71.

The 64th ranked association doesn't get 8 entries? An abomination!

Great work Commerce on the changes! I am a big fan :D

With the cutoff announced, the 22nd Transfer Window is now open in a preliminary stage! Last time was immense, and everyone really pitched in to try and make an impact. I'm sure we'd all like to see more of the same this time around.

This success in mind, I'm going to repost what I posted last time for any new players out there, or ones who just haven't approached international transfers for whatever reason.

TRANSFER WINDOW FAQ
So, what is the transfer window? The transfer system is how players move from one club to another, and this transfer spreadsheet is how transfers across the multiverse are conducted. North Americans might be more familiar with the term 'trades'. In football, player-for-player exchanges are rare (though not unknown) and players are generally bought for money.

Where to start? Put players you would like to see sold in the Official UICA Transfer List tab. Put players who are going to be released by their clubs in the Free Transfers tab. You will have to manually approve transfers for people in the Transfer List - Free Transfers are just bought on a first-come, first-served basis.

So someone bid on my player. What now? Look at the bid in the Bids tab. You'll notice there's two different columns - Club and Player accepting the bid. Generally speaking, the Club only cares about the transfer fee and if it meets its valuation. It doesn't matter how good the buying club is - the money's the same to the selling club. The player doesn't care about the money that the selling club gets, they only care about if the selling club is good, and if they meet their expectations. Selling clubs want more money, sold players are looking for clubs with more prestige.

How do I determine what leagues are good? The UICA league rankings determine objective measures of strength. You will also want to consider the strength of the club in its given league - the Nepharim Premiership is a stronger league than the Brenecian A-League, but your player may well prefer to go to regular A-League winners Kingsgrove than Premiership strugglers Morningstar. Most players also weigh RP quality of a given league into consideration, though only well-RPed leagues will get to the high ranks anyway.

Can I put just anyone up? A good rule of thumb is to write a description for every player in the far right of the spreadsheet. If the player isn't relevant enough for you to want to write a description for them, they aren't worth putting on the sheet. A placeholder description will do for now, but definitely have a real description up by the time the window actually starts in roughly a week and a half.

How can I buy players? It's the same in reverse. What players do you want to see in your leagues? If they're on the Transfer List, put a Bid for them in the Bids tab. At minimum, this will probably be their cited Valuation. If the club and the player both agree by putting a Y in the relevant tab, then it's a done deal! The player is yours.

What about players who aren't on the Transfer List? You can bid for them, too! The worst that can happen is that the other person says no.

What about Free Transfers? Just put your club and trigramme in the red New Club columns. It's automatically a done deal.

How should I value my players? And how much can I reasonably bid? Fortunately, the NSS economy is far less stratified than the real-world football economy. Instead of big players changing hands for hundreds of Euro, while most leagues outside Europe will never see a transfer of even one million, there's more parity across UICA and this is reflected in more even results. If it's your first season, your top-half teams might have a full million to spend on a transfer fee, with most of the purchased foreigners being free transfers. Your best player, if they're in the prime of their career (roughly 25-29, but youth adds value, so 24-25 is probably peak value for a player), might fetch one or two million. Other starters on your national team might go for about a million, and ambitious guys in your league hoping to break into your national team will probably fetch like half a million.

Is that a hard and fast rule? No, and there are exceptions. Maybe your league is like the real-life Chinese Super League, a low-prestige league with a lot of money. It's entirely fair to throw a lot of cash around without much prestige, just as long as you're aware of that status. More generally, nobody is going to police you for Doing Things Wrong.

What should my expectations be like for my first season? Modest. Out of a few bids for less prominent players, often in their early- to mid-30s, a few will probably be accepted - and, of course, look through Free Transfers for players who appeal to you. Be realistic, of course - a guy who is like 31 and is still an active international for a strong team is probably not going to join your lower leagues just because he's in the Free Transfers tab - but beyond those obvious cases, you don't need to second-guess yourself.

If I have a free agent player, but I care about their destination, can I put them on the Transfer List anyway? Yes. Any bid for them will be for 0 - there's no club with their contract to take the money - and you are free to accept whatever destination you'd like.

Can I start yet? So far, the window is only open in a preliminary stage. People can put their players and managers up, write rumours, and start declaring interest in players, but the actual Sales and Bids tabs, and the New Club columns of the Free Transfers sheet, are locked for the time being. There's no rush, either - you can still add new characters onto the spreadsheet after the transfer window officially opens, when the first UICA round is posted.

Have other questions, or just want to hang out and chat? Then feel free to join the #nstransfers channel on Esper.net IRC! (It might not be that active before the window starts itself, so don't be disheartened if it's inactive when you join.)

Hey everyone,

So unfortunately I think I'm likely to be plunged into another period of relative inactivity for the indefinite future fairly soon, and therefore cannot guarantee that the ANL will be carrying on in any regular form after the next season. Therefore, in a similar sort of deal to Osarius last window, if you have players in my league and would like to move them elsewhere in the window, I will most certainly not be offended.

To clarify though, I will get some sort of league post done (even if not to the usual standard) for UICA 72, so any players currently in my league will have representation for this season.

Apologies for any difficulties caused.

Sorry to hear, hopefully it's nothing too serious on your end and you can work things out alright. But of course take your time to sort out what you need to!

I'm bad at phrasing these things at 7am.

Possibly stupid question, but where do domestic RP's go in order to be noticed for transfers/UICA? My newswire or the domestic newswire thread? Is it okay to make multiple RP posts in the latter throughout a season?

I'd say link all Rp's related to the season to your final post that includes your entries in any given season. Easier to get to them, and easier for others to follow. Especially ones in a separate thread.

Seconded. I recommend copy/pasting links to each new related post in the top of your first post in your domestic thread to keep track.

And with the cutoff in place, the 22nd Transfer Window is now officially open in its full capacity! Join us in #nstransfers on Esper.net for further discussion.

A reminder as well that while the filters are for your free use, please be considerate and undo them when you're done. While it might well be reasonable to search temporarily only for 25-year old inverted left wingers born when the moon was waxing gibbous, it is highly unlikely this will be relevant to anyone else. Also, if you accidentally drag a tab out of place (which is very easy to do, and I wish there was a way to lock them in place), please put it back in its correct place in the order. A tidy window is a happy window.

Hi! -
Can someone explain how the UICA games work? I noticed that even though all games were scorinated people are rping the games during their domestic seas9ns? Is UICA more of the UEFA Chamipons League more than a Club World Cup?
