The degrade/upgrade each cycle depending on the latest results. The last five cycles are factored equally into the coefficients.

So if you haven’t participated in five cycles, you will drop out of the rankings entirely.

UICA coefficients work like UEFA coefficients: the last five seasons count and they're all weighted equally. Any association which hasn't taken part in UICA in the last five seasons drops out of the rankings.

I wasn't quite sure whether to post my questions here or in the general questions thread or somewhere else, so if I'm mistaken, I apologize. Also, I'm quite new, and I have a lot of questions (and I'll likely have even more later that I'm not thinking of now), so thank you in advance if you're willing to try to help me out on some of them.

How long does a typical UICA cycle last? How long does a transfer window last? Is the time in which either one of these cycles start or stop governed by some kind of milestone or time marker? Speaking of possible milestones, even though it isn't technically domestic soccer, since I'm already asking a bunch of questions along similar lines: how long does the World Cup cycle last? I've perused the UICA headquarters, and it seems to me that there's no way to improve your clubs' performances in international competition except by already having solid performances in international competition; is that true, or am I missing something? Finally, am I correct in assuming that clubs promoted from the second tier to the first tier in their national pyramid would be eligible to be entered in the Series B Champions Cup the following year despite the fact they would technically be in the first tier & the Series B Champions Cup simultaneously (and, similarly, clubs relegated from the first tier to the second would be ineligible, despite being in the second tier at the time the SBCC takes place)?

Thank you!

Don't worry! You're in the right place.
How long does a typical UICA cycle last?

IC: Usually a year, but some users go for half a year or two years.
OOC: Roughly three months.
How long does a transfer window last?

IC: Between seasons. Unlike RL, there usually aren't midseason transfers.
OOC: Roughly a fortnight, from UICA cutoff to its final results. At all times, the free transfer list is open.
Is the time in which either one of these cycles start or stop governed by some kind of milestone or time marker?

The UICA cycle is dependent entirely on Commerce Heights. There's cutoff warnings a week before results are due, giving people plenty of time to submit.
Speaking of possible milestones, even though it isn't technically domestic soccer, since I'm already asking a bunch of questions along similar lines: how long does the World Cup cycle last?

IIRC, every 2-3 months.
I've perused the UICA headquarters, and it seems to me that there's no way to improve your clubs' performances in international competition except by already having solid performances in international competition; is that true, or am I missing something?

As with everything on NSS, RP is key. A league that always submits but doesn't RP will hit a plateau at around 30th, as well as not being particularly rewarding to write or read - but the more effort you put in, the more you'll be rewarded. Randomness and rank are factors as well, of course.

Yes.

Thanks so much, Nephara!

As I warned, I'm not quite done yet with my questions for y'all. I've one follow-up, along with a few original ones after that.

So, as I gather, the coefficients are based entirely on previous performance, but there exists (precisely) one way to improve international results outside of relying on randomness to engineer an upset, that being submitting solid RPs when domestic league results are submitted? To clarify an aspect of that question, would I be correct in assuming that it's just domestic league RPs, and not RPs related to the actual UICA competition (as those seem to happen quite rapidly [and, in the cases of some rounds, even simultaneously]), that count?

I've been asking primarily about UICA competitions, but I wonder: How do other competitions, like the Cygnus Cup, determine clubs' quality when they're put into the scorinator? I assume some part of it is RP, but are UICA coefficients or prior Cygnus Cup results also used to some degree? Now for a question completely different: In the transfer window, are there any standards for what makes a reasonable bid or asking price for fees or wages? I assume an unreasonable bid like $1 billion would be rejected by everyone, as a way the community self-regulates, but how might a club avoid making a, say, $5 million bid when the player is really worth $1 million (or vice versa)? And how long does it typically take to scorinate & RP a domestic league &/or cup, especially with a large pyramid? And, to unite the previous two topics, if you successfully bid for foreign players to enter your league, what are the standards on RP-ing those players' results? I'd assume it would be quite arduous to draft a write-up of every foreign player if there are a lot in a league, but I'd also assume the players' home nations would be keenly interested to hear how their players do overseas, especially when making decisions like selecting international rosters.

Thank you in advance for answering any questions that you can!

I don't speak for CH (or for the other hosts of club competitions - there's ones that run for the champions of the 'big three' sporting regions, as well as a Cup Winners' Cup) but I assume that anything involving your clubs is fair game. Most of the RPed leagues do cover UICA results.

I've been asking primarily about UICA competitions, but I wonder: How do other competitions, like the Cygnus Cup, determine clubs' quality when they're put into the scorinator? I assume some part of it is RP, but are UICA coefficients or prior Cygnus Cup results also used to some degree?

Probably can't answer this myself, but isolating it so that someone else better-informed can.

Now for a question completely different: In the transfer window, are there any standards for what makes a reasonable bid or asking price for fees or wages? This is a hard one. The NSS market is... significantly more even than the RL market, as are its leagues and national teams. IRL, you get superstars moving for over a hundred million, while weaker leagues trade in the hundreds of thousands at most. It's assumed to be a more even playing field on NSS, and this is reflected in UICA - it's still not common for an unranked side to beat a top side, but it's practically impossible IRL.

The guy selling the player puts a value of what they reckon the player's worth, and will almost always reject offers beneath that. As a new league, a good benchmark might be to try not to go over two million for any individual player, three million for a club overall, selling your best couple of international players at 1-2 million and weaker ones at 0-1. Gradually raise these limits as the league gets better, of course. As the current top national league, Nepharim clubs will pay 40-50m for a genuine world-class player, 10m-25m for someone who'll start for a really big team, while smaller Nepharim teams will fork out 5m for a real star and 2-3m for average starters. Some new leagues are intentionally more cash-rich/prestige-poor (take the CSL or most big West Asian leagues), however, and pump in a lot more money early on, so if that's what you're going for, there's precedent.

And how long does it typically take to scorinate & RP a domestic league &/or cup, especially with a large pyramid?

It's hard to say, but for a smallish preview and match-by-match season it's probably roughly the work of a couple of hours a day for about a week. As time goes on, you'll find out what works for you, cut the parts that aren't rewarding and add stuff that you want to write about.

As just a recommendation, I advise making starting XIs for each top-flight team in your first season, and then filling out their reserves in the second. A preview is definitely worth doing to provide background on each club, and give readers a team to support.

I personally don't give foreign players any special treatment, apart from not usually signing international (specifically as in capped, not just foreign) players if they aren't going to be regular starters for their clubs. Some leagues (Bonesea, Apox and Vilita, just off the top of my head) do add special sections at the end of the season about how every foreign player did, though. There's precedent either way, so it's up to you.

I delayed my response because I hoped that someone else might swoop in to answer that non-UICA question, but I'm afraid it may have been lost amongst all the other questions that were so kindly answered by Nephara - and, while I'm on that subject, thank you so much for that, Nephara. Unfortunately, those aren't the last of my questions.

I'll repeat my earlier question, since I still don't really have a response yet & I'm asking questions anyways: How do [non-UICA] competitions, like the Cygnus Cup, determine clubs' quality when they're put into the scorinator? I assume some part of it is RP, but are UICA coefficients or prior Cygnus Cup results also used to some degree?

In addition, the big three sporting regions were mentioned, and I've heard that phrase before elsewhere. Are those big three Rushmore, Esportiva, & Atlantian Oceania? And what differentiates those three from each other? What benefit might be derived from being in those regions? Do those regional competitions factor into UICA or other non-UICA (again, I'm thinking of the Cygnus Cup, but I'm not really aware of any non-UICA competitions that aren't restricted to specific regions) competitions?

Finally, a few friends & I got pretty far with creating a pretty NS-style football pyramid a while back, but we weren't actually thinking about NS at the time, so the clubs are based on RL cities - to be fair, we changed the format of the league (pretty dramatically) and our clubs aren't based on any specific clubs IRL; rather, we basically just named clubs after RL cities & coloured those clubs' kits to match with what we thought they might be if such a league were created IRL. It's more a simulation of a sporting alt history than a league designed for an NS nation. What are the standards on that? Would it be better to simulate that outside of NS &, if I were to participate in NS Sports, do so with a different league?

Thank you!

I'll let someone else field the first question, but;
Alta Italia wrote:In addition, the big three sporting regions were mentioned, and I've heard that phrase before elsewhere. Are those big three Rushmore, Esportiva, & Atlantian Oceania?

Yes.
And what differentiates those three from each other?

It's a cultural thing, I guess. In broad strokes; AO is the region of prestige. It's the oldest, I'm pretty positive it's won the most silverware, but it's still accessible to new users - there's no gatekeeping. Rushmore tends to have the most focus on IC politics and verisimilitude, trying to make a big picture, something that can really be interacted with not just as a bunch of NSS users but as a geopolitical entity. That, too, is optional. Esportiva is the newest region, though it's still a few years old. Its reputation is focused on being friendly, accessible and just sort of giving everyone a chance and a leg up into the community.
What benefit might be derived from being in those regions?

The opportunity to place yourself somewhere in the world, the sense of community and the chance to join regional tournaments. I strongly recommend it.
Do those regional competitions factor into UICA or other non-UICA (again, I'm thinking of the Cygnus Cup, but I'm not really aware of any non-UICA competitions that aren't restricted to specific regions) competitions?

There's a national tournament and a club tournament for each of the regions. To my knowledge the rankings for all of them are all based on WCC/UICA rankings, but weighted slightly differently to account for performances in the tournaments themselves over time.

Would it be better to simulate that outside of NS &, if I were to participate in NS Sports, do so with a different league?

I can't speak for CH - though I have a vague memory of a guy being rejected for literally submitting West Bromwich Albion to UICA - but I would strongly recommend basing your league around unique concepts. Sure, there's only a limited number of elements, and you can never really be wholly original - Royal Hispanic teams can be called 'Real', other teams will be FCs or Cities or whatever, and nobody's going to examine your kit colours to make sure they've never been used IRL (because pretty much no matter what it is, it will have been) - but it's jarring to see real-world elements being dropped into an NSS universe that exists entirely apart from RL. So yeah, it's not a hard-and-fast rule, but definitely make a system based around your own nation's geography and culture, and keep inspiration from certain RL sides subtle, if existing at all.

Thank you!

A small point of order Italia might be wondering about: UICA rankings are only determined by UICA competitions. A team's performance in the Cup Winner's Cup, or the regional competitions, does not affect their UICA rankings. Although as mentioned, the regional competitions may keep a side ranking of how well teams do in their tournament and mesh that with their UICA ranking.

A little bit ago I asked about how heavily RP is weighted in the various non-UICA tourney and the answer I got was basically "it varies."

As the person who runs two out of the three regional club competitions, I can answer how I handle them. I base the ranks off those in the UICA post the last cycle completed, with an addition of a moderate RP bonus. For non UICA associations that enter, I generally build up their ranking over multiple cycles if they continue to submit and weight that RP higher, to provide a more even playing field for them despite not having a rank in the UICA. I use the club coefficients for pots only, while using the association coefficient for the scorination process, as it is done in the UICA.

The ranks used for Cygnus Cup scorination are based off the UICA coëfficients at the end of each cycle (both association and club ones) plus some RP bonus. Past performance in the competition is also considered in the calculation given that UICA coëfficients only cover performance in the Champions' Cup and Globe Cup (not the SBCC or any non-UICA competition).

Do those regional competitions factor into UICA or other non-UICA (again, I'm thinking of the Cygnus Cup, but I'm not really aware of any non-UICA competitions that aren't restricted to specific regions) competitions?

The answer to this question, speaking only for the Cygnus Cup, is: no.

With the cutoff announced, the 21st Transfer Window is now open in a preliminary stage! With a lot of leagues in flux, opening up or just generally aiming to make a splash, I'd like to see this be the biggest and best window yet.

In this spirit, I'd like to address what recent players might be wondering; what is the transfer window? The transfer system is how players move from one club to another, and this transfer spreadsheet is how transfers across the multiverse are conducted. North Americans might be more familiar with the term 'trades'. In football, player-for-player exchanges are rare (though not unknown) and players are generally bought for money.

Where to start? Put players you would like to see sold in the Official UICA Transfer List tab. Put players who are going to be released by their clubs in the Free Transfers tab. You will have to manually approve transfers for people in the Transfer List - Free Transfers are just bought on a first-come, first-served basis.

So someone bid on my player. What now? Look at the bid in the Bids tab. You'll notice there's two different columns - Club and Player accepting the bid. Generally speaking, the Club only cares about the transfer fee and if it meets its valuation. It doesn't matter how good the buying club is - the money's the same to the selling club. The player doesn't care about the money that the selling club gets, they only care about if the selling club is good, and if they meet their expectations. Selling clubs want more money, sold players are looking for clubs with more prestige.

How do I determine what leagues are good? The UICA league rankings determine objective measures of strength. You will also want to consider the strength of the club in its given league - the Nepharim Premiership is a stronger league than the Brenecian A-League, but your player may well prefer to go to regular A-League winners Kingsgrove than Premiership strugglers Morningstar. Most players also weigh RP quality of a given league into consideration, though only well-RPed leagues will get to the high ranks anyway.

Can I put just anyone up? A good rule of thumb is to write a description for every player in the far right of the spreadsheet. If the player isn't relevant enough for you to want to write a description for them, they aren't worth putting on the sheet. A placeholder description will do for now, but definitely have a real description up by the time the window actually starts in roughly a week and a half.

How can I buy players? It's the same in reverse. What players do you want to see in your leagues? If they're on the Transfer List, put a Bid for them in the Bids tab. At minimum, this will probably be their cited Valuation. If the club and the player both agree by putting a Y in the relevant tab, then it's a done deal! The player is yours.

What about players who aren't on the Transfer List? You can bid for them, too! The worst that can happen is that the other person says no.

What about Free Transfers? Just put your club and trigramme in the red New Club columns. It's automatically a done deal.

How should I value my players? And how much can I reasonably bid? Fortunately, the NSS economy is far less stratified than the real-world football economy. Instead of big players changing hands for hundreds of Euro, while most leagues outside Europe will never see a transfer of even one million, there's more parity across UICA and this is reflected in more even results. If it's your first season, your top-half teams might have a full million to spend on a transfer fee, with most of the purchased foreigners being free transfers. Your best player, if they're in the prime of their career (roughly 25-29, but youth adds value, so 24-25 is probably peak value for a player), might fetch one or two million. Other starters on your national team might go for about a million, and ambitious guys in your league hoping to break into your national team will probably fetch like half a million.

Is that a hard and fast rule? No, and there are exceptions. Maybe your league is like the real-life Chinese Super League, a low-prestige league with a lot of money. It's entirely fair to throw a lot of cash around without much prestige, just as long as you're aware of that status. More generally, nobody is going to police you for Doing Things Wrong.

What should my expectations be like for my first season? Modest. Out of a few bids for less prominent players, often in their early- to mid-30s, a few will probably be accepted - and, of course, look through Free Transfers for players who appeal to you. Be realistic, of course - a guy who is like 31 and is still an active international for a strong team is probably not going to join your lower leagues just because he's in the Free Transfers tab - but beyond those obvious cases, you don't need to second-guess yourself.

If I have a free agent player, but I care about their destination, can I put them on the Transfer List anyway? Yes. Any bid for them will be for 0 - there's no club with their contract to take the money - and you are free to accept whatever destination you'd like.

Can I start yet? So far, the window is only open in a preliminary stage. People can put their players and managers up, write rumours, and start declaring interest in players, but the actual Sales and Bids tabs, and the New Club columns of the Free Transfers sheet, are locked for the time being.

Have other questions, or just want to hang out and chat? Then feel free to join the #nstransfers channel on Esper.net IRC! (It might not be that active before the window starts itself, so don't be disheartened if it's inactive when you join.)

Apologies for not getting a proper series up for the deadline. With that knowledge in mind, I'll refrain from transferring internationally this season and will think out a more low-word-count concept for the upcoming edition. If you'ld prefer your player not to be part of that (or really insist of having one of yours over), do contact me through TG.

Euraleague player stats and awards for my previous season now available above. New season will go up tonight.

...and now the Season 35 stats for the UICA deadline just gone are up too: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3108&p=33386207#p33386207

Please note the Gold League rosters - if you're interested in anyone on there, make a bid for them on the current transfer window sheet, only remember that all players will be a year older on the sheet.

On the transfer window sheet, if a player and club are from the same country, and the club approves the trade, does that mean the player is sold?

From a point of experience - I would say it's not yet. Often it is used as an extra RP angle, claiming by example...

"Whilst the club agrees on a transfer to either FC, City or Town - the player is still hesitant to make his definitive choice."

Basically, both boxes have to be marked yes, before you can copy it across.

Hey everybody! Friendly reminder that, since the UICA results have concluded, the transfer window will be closing imminently. Now is the time to hop on the sheet and make any last-minute decisions on bids.

Hey all, just a quick housekeeping note regarding a couple transfers.

The user behind Sulsuland (Mushcap is his main) has given me permission to officially administer the dealings of Sulsu on the transfer sheet. I realize that the bids for Sulsus on the sheet were made in jest, but Sulsu in itself is in jest so I've officialized the transfers.

You may ask, wait a minute, how can you approve multiple bids for one player? Well the fact is that there are millions of Sulsus milling about in Sulsuland, merely clones of the True Sulsu with more diluted traits and abilities. These are the Sulsus who have made up the Sulsuland national team for the last few cycles. The real Sulsu has never actually played in any World Cup matches, or else the opponent would likely lose 11-0, because the real Sulsu is probably god himself.

Anyhow, these "normal" Sulsus act as you'd expect a normal Sulsu to act: their only goal is to obtain fish. Playing soccer or really doing anything other than a straight pursuit of fish is merely an accidental event likely caused by a very scenic route to obtain fish. If you've been approved for a Sulsu transfer, you have one of these normal Sulsus in your possession.

Don't let them get hungry.
