Dear all,

I know it has been a long time. Hell, we don't even have a country any more. But then, when you get invaded by a lost container ship cargoing wild animals across Atlantian Oceania and lose, it only seems right.

Anyway, I have been living here in Cafundéu ever since my playing days finished. They have treated me well here. However, I have not met anyone else from Schiavonia in the fifty years since we all played together. And I thought it would be nice to meet up after all this time.

Now, I know you are all living around the world after what happened at World Cup 37. When we left at such short notice, the people here in Cafundéu were overjoyed, as they went through to the next stage at our expense. However, our homelands had become wild, and we all had to spread across the world.

But I have been saving up. I have enough to buy us a small island, and to get boats to any of you who may still be around. We can get together and, if anyone wants to, live on the island. It has space for a football pitch and a few homes. If you don't want to stay, that's fine.

Now, I know some of the people who are supposed to receive this letter are no longer around. World Cup 36 was fifty years ago! If that is the case, it would be nice to have members of the families of those that passed away to join us.

Hopefully, we'll get to see some familiar faces when we get to the island. And if anyone has a name for it, that would be great, too.

Your old friend,
Carlos Cueto.

The Get Together.

Postby Schiavonia » Fri Nov 13, 2009 9:01 am

Matthew Tilda: "It's been brilliant getting together after all this time."

James Hogan: "Amazing! I'd forgotten all the times we'd had!"

Carlos Cueto: "Well, the invitation is open. If you want to stay here, please feel free."

Matthew Tilda: "But we have families. We can't just leave them!"

Carlos Cueto: "They can come too! We can all live here too! And we can play again!"

Kenny Sanderson III: "But... let's be honest. We're well past it!"

Carlos Cueto: "Have you seen some of the teams that have entered the World Cup before? Remember the NEWI Cenf Druids World Cup 11 team?"

Kenny Sanderson III: "That was over 180 years ago!"

Hugh Brain: "Not much older than some of us, then!"

Carlos Cueto: "Look, the 50th World Cup is coming up, and I thought that we could enter a classic World Cup nation. You know, just as a one off."

Kenny Sanderson III: "Well... if it's only a one off."

Hugh Brain: "OK, I'm in."

James Hogan: "As long as we can get fit first."

Carlos Cueto: "Right then. I'll book us a friendly match!"

David Jones: "So who are these, then?"

Carlos Cueto: "They are the national team of NASCAR Start and Parks."

David Jones: "Racing drivers?"

Carlos Cueto: "Well, yes. So, it goes that they should be fit. And, for political reasons, they weren't allowed into the world cup. So they wanted someone to test themselves against. And what better than a team who reached the finals the last four times they entered, including a third place?"

Matthew Tilda: "And did you tell them that was fifty years ago?"

Carlos Cueto: "I... um... don't remember now. Anyway, it's only a friendly kick about to test our fitness. What could go wrong? Let's get out there and show then we've still got it!"

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Five minutes later...

James Hogan: "Need... air... can't... bre... W-w-where th-they go...?"

Isla Blige: "It looks... like they... they're off!"

James Hogan: "But... we've on... only played f... five minutes."

Isla Blige: "Well... let's see what... David says."

They see David Jones speaking to the captain of the NASCAR Streets and Parks team. When they have finished, the NASCAR team disappear on a fleet of speedboats, while Jones staggers over to Blige and Hogan. Slowly.

Very slowly.

In fact, he still hasn't made it. I... I think he's collapsed!

Oh, wait, no, he's up again.

Nearly there now.

David Jones: "I've been speaking... to their... captain; says... that the team... don't like... to play... for too long... Says they... they like to... save their boots for the road. Or something."

James Hogan: "Well, it's a... a good job! We'd have all gone... to the football pitch... in the sky... if that had gone on... any longer!"

Carlos Cueto came over.

Slowly.

Oh, you get the picture...

Carlos Cueto: "Right then. We're... going to have to... to get the fitness up before... the qualifiers start. Which means... entering... a tournament."

David Jones: "Baptism of... of Fire?"

Carlos Cueto: "Worth a... a try."

"Gather round everyone!"

Carlos Cueto had a message for the island that everyone needed to hear. And when Carlos puts the call out, everyone comes out to gather.

"Everyone, I want you all to know how proud I am of you. Now, I know we didn't last very long in that match against the racing drivers, but since then, look at what we have achieved. We have homes built to withstand the most viscious storms, running water and electricity; and, thanks to the work of the Jones family, we now have a connection to the internet. So well done to everyone for making that happen!"

Applause rang around the island.

"Next on our list of things to do will be to build will be the clubhouse, a stand to seat up to five thousand people, changing rooms and a grand hall. By the time we have finished the project, we should have the fittest bunch of over-65s in the world!"

More applause.

"But, there is one slight problem. Our bid to get some competitive games under our belts by entering the Baptism of Fire, has been turned down. This is because Schiavonia have entered before, and are not new to the game.

"So, in order to get some competition, we are going to go to another tournament, this one in Australiazia. See you all at the jetty on Tuesday morning, and we shall set sail for the 20/20 World tournament!"

And so the 20/20 Cricket World Cup begins hotting up. Lithatrius are preparing to compete against 11 of the best cricket teams in the world. The Stallions have been put forward to compete in this tournament to bring glory to Lithatrius, for the first time since the embarassing knock out in the group stage of the Rugby League World Cup. We will be bring up-to-the-minute coverage of the tournament, with the Stallions representing our proud and noble nation.

The Stallion's first match is against the Blouman Empire, followed by Hamilton Island, and then Australiaza twice, finished with a match against Hamilton Island again.

This was Samuel Parker for the Lithatrius Broadcasting Corporation.

"Carlos."

"Yes?"

"Have you seen the schedule for this tournament?"

"Yes. A group of four teams. Three matches and we're off."

"Ah. You do know they've changed it to one group of 10 teams?"

"Ah."

"And you do know that this tournament lasts longer than the beginning of the qualifiers."

"Ah. Anyone got a phone?"

The Aquinovan Captain walked onto the stage with the rest of the team following him, with most of the Lindenhain press watching. In a heavy Norwegian accent, he said:

"Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to the Aquinovan capital, Saimerstadt. My name is Urban and I will be the captain of the Aquinovan Vikings Cricket Team, representing most of Lindenhain in the tournament. The rest of the team and I have high ambitions of winning. We will be playing, amongst other teams, Lithatrius, Las Guardianas, Hamilton Island and Australiaza, and we have high ambitions of winning. Thank you very much."

They filed out of the room.

OOC: You made an error in your standings - you listed Rajesthan twice but not Lithatrius at all.

Carlos Cueto seemed excited to see his captain tonight.

"David, we're sorted."

"Sorted? What for?"

"Well, you know how we can't play these ten games?"

"Yes..."

"Well, now we can!"

"What... how?"

"Let me introduce you to the Schiavone Football Squad Mark II!"

Carlos and Dave walk into the lobby of their hotel.

"But... who are they? They look nothing like us!"

"They're locals from old people's homes that I've rounded up. I think they're called Melbourne Old Timers FC."

"And how can they represent Schiavonia?"

"Because they are Schiavone!"

"But how?"

"Well, who runs the country?"

"I guess... you do?"

"Exactly. So I'm letting them be Schiavone for the duration of the tournament! They've even got passports and everything!"

"And, you do realise that this was a cricket tournament we were entered for?"

"Ah. Really?"

"Yes. Have you never heard of 20/20 cricket?"

"It... it does ring a bell..."

"I'd better tell them."

"David... Actually... Maybe you should just leave it..."

"Really?"

"Well, we wouldn't want to put them off, would we?"

"I guess not..."

"Right, let's get everyone packed. We're got football to play!"

"Carlos... we can't let this get out, though."

"Why does it matter? They are Schiavone nationals, they have all taken a name of a member of the team - what could go wrong?"
